Why Your Nervous System Is Basically a Distributed System.
Ever had your hand yank away from something hot before you even realized it burned you?
Yeah. That wasnāt your brain. That was your spinal cord making a snap decision without bothering to loop in headquarters. Welcome to your nervous systemāa beautifully chaotic, ultra-efficient, slightly rebellious network that behaves a lot like a distributed system.

In other words, your body is basically running like the internet.
Let me explain.
𤯠Wait, Whatās a Distributed System? Think of Netflix. You hit play, and a bunch of servers all over the world coordinate to deliver your episode with (hopefully) zero buffering. There's no single "main" server doing all the work. It's a network of systems talking to each other.
Now imagine your body doing the same thing. You are the network.
š§ The Brain Is NOT the Boss (All the Time) We love the idea that the brain is this genius CEO issuing orders and micromanaging everything. But honestly? Itās more like upper managementāimportant, but often unaware of what's happening on the ground.
Your nervous system delegates. Heavily.
Burn your finger? Your spinal cord pulls your hand back before your brain even gets the memo.
Need to digest lunch? Your gut's nervous systemāyes, it has its ownātakes the lead.
Trying to walk and talk at the same time? Your motor circuits handle the walking while your brain gabs away.
It's like your body is a startup that figured out how to scale earlyāwith local decision-making baked in.
š Reflexes Are Basically Edge Computing In tech, we talk about edge computingāprocessing data close to where itās generated instead of sending everything back to the cloud (or main server). Itās faster and more efficient.
You do the same thing. Your spinal cord handles urgent stuff locally, without checking in with the brain. Itās your bodyās way of saying, āLook, we donāt have time for a meeting about this. Just act.ā
Honestly? Genius.
𧬠Redundancy = Survival Distributed systems are built with backup nodes in case one fails. Your bodyās got this too.
Stroke victims sometimes retrain other parts of their brain to take over lost functions.
The "second brain" in your gut can keep your digestive system moving even if your brain is knocked out.
Redundancy isnāt just a design featureāitās survival logic.
ā³ Nothing Is Synchronized (and Thatās Okay) In tech, distributed systems donāt need everything to be perfectly timed. The same goes for your body. Signals move at different speeds:
Super-fast reflexes.
Slow, simmering hormone signals.
Emotional gut feelings that hit before your conscious brain even knows what's up.
Everythingās asynchronousābut it all works. (Well, usually.)
šÆ Local Smarts, Global Magic Your brain isnāt giving you step-by-step instructions to walk. Your spinal cord and cerebellum handle the mechanics. Your eyes keep track of the path. Your brain just says, āLetās go over there.ā
All these subsystems are smart on their own. But together? They make you you.
Itās a miracle of coordination without central controlābasically the same principle behind swarming bees, flocking birds, or how Waze reroutes you mid-drive.
TL;DR: Youāre Not a MachineāYouāre a Network You're not a brain driving a meat suit. You're a self-coordinating ecosystem of intelligent agents doing their best to keep you upright, fed, balanced, focused, calm (sometimes), and alive.
The more you understand that, the more awe you feelānot just about neuroscience, but about being human.

The purchase of the mansion was a spontaneous decision on their part.
Sam suggested it, actually.
1 they had the money, 2 they needed much more space than a single apartment could offer, and 3 now she gets to create her own garten of venomous plants!
Tucker holed himself up in his own room, his tech room, because he finally can separate his workspace and his bedroom!
Danny was haunting the mansion in return.
It was during the day that Danny saw the shadow of a child running. He had no idea the mansion was already hauntedā why hadn't the ghost said anything before?
Searching for the shadow, it took them all weeks to even get a glimpse of the Ghost.
Only....
Only it wasn't a ghost. It's a whole human child. A human child left behindā
His name is Tim Drake and he has been living here his whole life, howā where were his parents?!

absolutely obsessed with izutsumi's introduction to the party. a cat randomly shows up one day and everyone just independently decides they have a cat now. they don't discuss whether or not they should help her or offer to let her join the party, they just go "i guess we have a cat now." and that's it. Then within five minutes of acquiring their new cat all of them would die for her which is 100% how getting a cat works

Cybertronians who are actually well-informed about organics, maybe theyāre even xenobiologists! But then they come to Earth and meet the chaotic little things called humans.
For the first few months the local coterie of humans have to put up with having various foods grabbed away from them by panicked mechs who KNOW organics cannot eat theobromine!! Who even allowed this in the mess hall?!?! What do you mean, vending machine? No, this wonāt do.
Your secret desk stash of whiskey? Confiscated. Your fresh snack of grapes? Nixed. They catch you putting chopped onions and jalapeƱos on a hot dog and you have to call Ratchet because they blow a circuit
Prowl has to step in to defuse a hostage situation when they try and remove the coffee bar
Eventually they do chill out. And thereās even a genuinely nice moment sometimes. Like when they pick up that those brownies youāre about to devour have a type of ingredient youāre allergic to, and save you from a reaction. Or when they speak up for you to the mechs who donāt get organics at all.
But even when they know itās safe for you to enjoy avocado (healthy, even)! Theyāre still side-eyeing your guacamole in complete disbelief. Why the frag is this one species able to eat so many things that nothing else on the planet - or in the galaxy, can eat?

Does anyone else justā¦.find animals wherever you go? I hike with a friend every Saturday, at a park thatās not particularly close to any actual houses. As I was leaving this week, I found a SUPER CUTE kitten!
My local shelter is not accepting healthy animals at this time so they sent him away, fortunately I foster for another shelter that has tentatively agreed to accept him (just waiting on the official email saying yes).
In the meantime, my kiddo has named him Moonstar, and he is NOT staying, no matter how sweet and adorable he is.
Kiddo also asked my husband āWhy did Mommy bring home a kitten from her hike?ā to which he sighed and said āItās what she doesā¦ā XD So true!!

Youāve never been this sick before. Youāve had tonsillitis as a kid, typical flus and colds, a memorable bout or three with bronchitis and, of fucking course, came down with covid a couple times. None of those illnesses were like this. Something has gotten inside your head.
You make a quiet noise of complaint as what feels like cold metal surrounds you, painful against your hot skin, even through the blanket wrapped around you. You feel so cold, but youāre sweaty and dizzy. The world isnāt right. Everythingās too big and bright and moving wrong. Your headās stuffed full of cotton and youāre not thinking right. And thereās a voice you donāt know, rich and deep, with a strange modulation to it you canāt place.
Sorry, little one, but your internal temperature is creeping past the danger zone for your species with no signs of stopping. Much higher and youāre risking processor damage. Donāt be afraid, weāre going to help you.
A machine sort of noise and rush of air, with a very quiet addition you donāt quite catch. I hope.
You are too sick to do much of anything except feel horribly confused, weak, and cold. You flinch away from the light, its brightness like ice picks into your head. Thereās another voice snapping something about photosensitivity, dim the slagging lights. The brightness fades, but even in the dim twilight you donāt really want to open your eyes. Everything hurts. You just want to go home.
Thereās a hushed argument, and then something very large moves over you. In your delirium it registers as if youāre swimming deep underwater, and a pod of whales has come to say hello.
āS illegal. Getting me in troubleā¦caught. Youāre mumbling to the whales. Youāre not ever supposed to approach wildlife. Even if you always dreamed of meeting them.
That rumbling voice sounds so tired, so sad, that you feel bad for it.
Are they conscious? Are they trying to communicate with us?
A pause. The other voice speaks. Thereās a sense of something big hovering directly over you. You can feel it somehow, even with your eyes closed, like feeling a current in the ocean.
No, I donāt think so. Their brain activity is alarming compared to baseline. But who in the Pit knows? Organic processors are a mess to begin with, let alone one infected with something this species has never encountered before.
A big blue whale-song, mournful. We never should have come here. What have we done, Ratchet?
The other, more gruff voice. Also sounding tired. We couldnāt have known that the debris brought a contagion planetside until it happened. Donāt panic just yet, Prime. So far, theyāre the only one directly exposed. We got them in quarantine as soon as Nurse Darby realized something was wrong beyond the usual illnesses. It was just bad luck they happened to come across the contamination before we could clean it all up. Thereās no reason to believe it can jump from human to human yet.
Thereās a pause, and the first voice is even quieter.
Will they live?
Thereās more motion. Beeping noises. You must be in a hospital. Yes, you remember that much. Going into the ER late one night after the Tylenol wouldnāt touch your fever, which had come on suddenly.
I canāt make promises, you know that. I donāt know much about this contagion. I didnāt even know it could behave this way in organics when itās harmless to us.
He sounds frustrated.
But I was fine, the groggy thought drifts up from the depths of your mind. Everything is slow and dark and cold, a thousand fathoms deep.
I was fine, I went out doing my volunteer work. And then I got sick.
You donāt remember meeting your doctors. There might have been an ambulanceā¦you think? Flashing lights, sirens. A womanās worried voice, low, as she adjusted the IV in your arm. Itās what is making you feel so cold, you decide, and with all your frail strength begin trying to grab and wrench it out.
An immediate shuffle around you, and the grumpy whale reaches out and stops you. You push weakly at its rubbery flipper. Itās a whale, a humpback whale you think. You have about as much chance of moving it as you do lifting an ambulance.
Eh-eh-eh! None of that, now. You pull that out and neither of us will enjoy me trying to put it back in. Optimus, hand me the - yes, thank you.
You whimper softly and cry out as you find you canāt move. Thereās things touching you - seaweed, wires, tangling you. Everythingās cold.
There. Sorry, human, but we canāt have you hurting yourself. ā¦why am I even talking to them, theyāre not going to remember any of this.
You huff and decide very hard to remember this just because you were told you wouldnāt. You forget a minute later what it was you were trying to remember, and start thrashing around against the seaweed. The beeping gets louder, more painful.
Canāt ever make anything easy, can you?
What are you doing?
Iām going to use the medication June left to sedate them.
But didnāt she say that could -
Yes, but - well, look at them!
Look at who? You wonder, as you fight off the tangling seaweed. You should find the surface. You need to breathe. Youāre starting to feel scared. You canāt breathe.
The humpback whale is distressed. Somehow you can feel it, you know it. If they were a mech I could put them in stasis, keep them from suffering like this. This is cruel, Optimus. I - I donāt know.
He sounds defeated, angry. So tired. You reach out past the seaweed to try and pet him, because if the whales are going to insist on hanging out, you might as well earn that huge fine for touching the wildlife. Your sensitive palm makes contact with cold, hard skin, almost like itās absorbed all the ice in the ocean. Thereās a feeling of surprise, and silence, and then something crashes like a wave in the distance. There are big booming sounds. Those waves slamming into rocky, echoing caverns.
Watch them a moment. Iām going to consult with June. Do not let them tear that IV out. Comm me if their breathing gets worse.
The big blue whale is back, filling in the absence of the humpback. It catches your hand in its massive flipper, then brushes your wet hair out of your face. You had always heard whales were impossibly gentle despite their enormous size. You hadnāt quite imagined they could be this dexterous, though.
Iām sorry this happened to you. You did nothing wrong. You and so many other innocents, harmed because of us.
You squeeze his flipper, you think, but things are getting very hazy.
Please live. There is so much more to the universe that you deserve to get to see. I donāt know if you can hear me, but donāt give up.
His voice, even full of pain deep as the bottom of the sea, is comforting. You donāt want him to be so sad. But thatās what whalesong always is, isnāt it?
The humpback comes back. Heās doing something with the IV. You had no idea whales knew how to do that. You didnāt know they could be white and red, either. Donāt tell Ahab.
June says to increase the dosage and keep giving fluids. The tests sheās running show this formulation should drive out the infection, butā¦
But?
ā¦but not withoutā¦impacts.
What kind of impacts? ā¦Ratchet?
We canāt be sure. This is all highly experimental, Prime, weāre working off of practically nothing. June thinks itās doing something to their central nervous system. We donāt know what, yet. Itās going to be a race to see what gives in first: the infection, or their vital systems.
A rumble, contemplative. At least they seem to have calmed. Their heart rate is down to almost normal.
For now. A pause. If they recover, we canāt keep this one. Fowler can find somewhere to stash them, Iām sure.
Silence.
Oh, for - Optimus! Weāre not running a xeno-zoo!
Let us wait and see if that is even a conversation we will need to have, old friend.
Disgruntled feelings like poprocks in your mind.
ā¦fine. Oh.
Oh?
Their fever has come down two-tenths of a point. Thatās a start in the right direction. Letās get that oxygen mask on and see if it helps. Of all the gasses to breathe, they had to pick one of the most flammable. Who even designed this fragging species? I want a word with them.
The whales are singing, and you decide itās not so scary down here, after all. It reminds you of that song. You wheeze out a few words.
Beyond thā sea, somewhereā¦waitingā¦
Hush. Rest, now. Big blue, biggest animal ever on earth. And for some reason, it cares about you.
You fall asleep under a blanket of seaweed, and eventually the ocean doesnāt feel so cold. Youāre part of a pod, swimming slowly compared to them, but swimming all the same. And at least youāre not alone down in the dark. Maybe when you wake, youāll get to see them breach the surface, leaping into the warmth of the sun. Maybe youāll get to leap with them.
