The SCREEN Act

Sen. Mike Lee has introduced the SCREEN ACT, a bill that applies the "harmful to minors" standard used to ban LGBTQ+ books and resources in schools and libraries and apply it nationally to the internet.

Any site that has any amount of material "harmful to minors" would be forced to employ surveillance tech (biometric scans, ID uploads, background checks) to prevent minors from accessing "pornography."

You will not be surprised to learn that this is backed by the Heritage Foundation.

Unlike some of the state age-verification laws, many of which are being challenged in court, SC will be enforced by the FTC, which has the ability to levy fines, raid business and freeze bank accounts. Yes, meaning that even non-for-profits like Ao3 will suffer.

This is something for all US users to keep on their radar. Call your reps, call your senators, and spread the word to protect our archive!

If you're in a fandom that had a lot of activity before like 2012 there's a chance its on ffnet

But there's also a chance it WAS on ffnet but it was purged and no one cared enough to save it....

There is nothing that makes me feel dirtier than going, "well, this is a bit of a weird pairing, but I can't be the only freak, I'm sure it exists on AO3!"

And then it doesn't fucking exist on AO3.

Normalize leaving unhinged comments on ao3 fics you like. I'm tired of being the only one brave enough to write "I am chewing on this fic" in the comment section. Be weird. Authors will love you for it

An Important Warning:

On November 1, 2024, I received the below comment on one of my fics. I had replied to it, believing it to be in good faith. This person, Leaona Colin, as seen by the Ao3 comment chain and discord profile below, directly messaged me under the guise of discussing my fic, and the conversation was normal for the most part

The conversation started to change into an attempt to strong arm me into commissioning them directly (something that unfortunately does happen through a desperate measure) for an animation project. I had believed, in my naivety, that this was just two artists workshopping ideas until they had mentioned this being a "paid collaboration". Please note that I at NO POINT made any indication of wanting to make a commission or anything of the like. For the full context, I will link our discord conversation in its entirety

At this point, the conversation started to change to the commission, and in my own personal awkwardness/fear of being perceived as rude, I played along because I honestly did not know what to do next. The way that this person has approached me feels like a MUCH bigger red flag than the insane price they came up with. It would be one thing to come into my direct messages and say "hey, I'm an animator and I'm wondering if you'd be interested in commissioning me to draw [scene] as a paid commission", however what I went through was a bait and switch. I had gone into this thinking I would be entering a casual conversation about my fic, about the story, and about my writing process, but that pretense was very quickly dropped after the above polite small talk

Mind you, THIS is the animation that they seem to be requesting between 1800-2200 USD for:

I had debated whether or not I should include the video, but I feel that it is important to bring up due to the insane price and the information that @baratrongirl helped provide me with due to her husband's own experience in this industry (thank you SO much Richard!!)

I have reported the comment to Ao3 and I have reported the profile to Discord itself. This is a warning to fic authors and other fan creators to please, please, PLEASE, be on the lookout and to stay safe. I have also learned of a recent scam in Ao3/FFN comment sections where a wave of commission scammers use stolen or ai art to promote themselves and either make of with the money or send some sort of ai art. The FFnet Art Scam Spread to A03

By now we're all probably familiar with the FFnet art scam. I got multiple messages from these scammers today alone!

Now they're on AO3 too!?!? I just got my first one. Within a few minutes of posting a new chapter, I got this in my inbox:

Their account was made only three days ago, and they're using one of the pretty standard form letters making the rounds on FFnet.

I immediately froze the comment thread so I could link to it in a report of the user profile, but someone beat me to the punch:

This art scam has gotten wildly out of hand on FFnet, and so far I haven't been able to find any info about FFnet actually trying to fix the problem. Hoping AO3 is quick to find a way to curb this scam invasion (EDIT: just got a comment saying they're good about catching them fast, thankfully). I really don't want my inbox on AO3 to start looking like my FFnet inbox:

Each and every one of those is a scammer. That's all the activity I get on the site now.

Keep your head on a swivel and don't fall for this obvious scam, friends.

The incredible @elkleggs (https://twitter.com/elkleggs) created a gorgeous piece of artwork of Barnes reading which was originally meant to connect with Chapter 79: Tattered Pages, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that this felt like a different, more private moment where the contents of the journals weren’t so fresh, and where they had some added context he could grasp.

While the contents of the journals are often grim, I’d like to imagine that between Nomble’s book and the notes he’s jotted down by hand, that Barnes occasionally finds entries that spark moments of levity. Perhaps it’s an update about whatever hijinks Sam got up to way back, an observation about Steve, or some fluff concerning one of those many stray cats he tended to. Whatever it is: I love the idea that it reminds him that he’s not as truly alone as he sometimes feels.

I deeply appreciate this gorgeous painting Elkleggs created to accompany this chapter. I love all of the careful thought and intention she put into it. She completed this piece over a year and a half ago, and it feels cathartic to not only finally work our way to this scene, but to be able to share the associated art with you. Once again: A *huge* to her for bringing this impactful story moment to life, and for all of you wonderful readers for keeping the story alive.
