Marauders Fandom > "There is no canon !!" and other rhetorics

Guess who's back in their marauders phase after 2-3 years of being dormant lmao?? ((spoiler its me lol)). Anyways, a lot has changed since 2021 in this fandom so I just wanted to talk about the direction i think it's going.

I remember in 2020-21 the fandom started to boom in popularity on tiktok --> esp with the rise wolfstar + atyd. I remember people were so suprised with remus' characterization as 'rougher around the edges' instead of the 'soft boi' thing, and how that influenced the new wolfstar dynamic. [Just want to add that the atyd characterisation is much more complex than this and its one of my fave fics --> I'm more talking about the fandom at large's reaction to this)

And since fandom is incapable of having two nuanced and characters who are not stark opposites,, their roles were basically reversed and now Remus is the toxic dom alpha male and sirius is the cute girlyboy twink --- which um,,, the oc-ification is so real its embarrassing but whatever (omg don't even get me started on jegulus 💀)). I just assumed these would stay as headcanons. But now we have people saying, that 'we barely know anything abt the marauders in canon' or 'isn't the whole point of fandom to make shit up?' which i have sO many issues with so let me just try and compile my thoughts into dot points for the sake of coherency.

'we barely know anything abt the marauders in canon' ---> First of all, Remus, Sirius and Severus are fully fleshed out characters in the og series -- why do you think people would care enough to create an entire fandom based on their backstories if they were 2d flat characters in canon?? Like bffr. I saw a post on here (forgot who it was by, let me know if u know!) that said, 'I didn't cry over sirius' death in OotP just for ppl to say that we know nothing abt him in canon'. Like, its just mind-boggling to me lol.

'isn't the whole point of fandom to make shit up?' --> Ok y'all. For a fandom to work, there have to be some guidelines, some kind of source material, some point of reference so people can build upon it and make content. I think we can all agree on that. One reason why HP is such a popular place for fandom is the world-building and potential plots/storylines. I see some people argue that jk rowling was a shit writer anyways so might as well contradict everything she says. Now, I don't disagree with that point in particular, Jo is a pretty mediocre writer and a terrible person. HOWEVERrr, I'd argue that it is a lot more fascinating when people expand or work on the concepts in HP. JK Rowling has a lot of great ideas but executes them terribly -- I love when fic writes do this, which prolly explain why I love atyd as it is still very much canon compliant but executes themes on class, disability and queerness that jkr could barely do in subtext. This doesn''t mean I only think canon compliant fics are valid. That's not the case! I think as long as the charcterization is consistent to the character and the particular circumstances/world they're in, its fine! In fact, I love seeing how the same character would function if in a different place! I also love seeing explorations of the magic and magic systems in aus or fix it fics (or even canon compliant ones) that still fit in with the canonnical system that we know.

I guess what I'm trying to say I wish the marauders fandom explored the world and charcterizations more deeply instead of creating shallow oc-fied version of the characters that fit into whatever's trending -- like just write your own book or smth lol -- booktok will eat it up i promise.

Also, kinda related kinda not but um,,, why are we romanticising fascists -- like babe no evan rosier is not your babygirl he canonnoically tortured multiple ppl and became a death eater soo... not saying that I wouldn't want an exploration of his character or even a relationship with barty -- (who's not some cool dairk-haired edgelord but a actually a cowardly fascist murderer with blond hair -- yes the blond hair is important) -- I'd just want them to be portrayed as the not morally good people they are. Like,, if u want to oc-ify a character like pick someone whos not a death eater or has little info on them like dirk cresswell or frank longbottom,,, or ya know,, one of the MANY female characters in the fandom ((This fandom also has a problem with women and sapphic ships in general but that's a whole other issue lol).

I know this 'babygirlification' of death eaters doesn't mean to do this, but it also ends up watering down the themes of oppression, bigotry, etc and leaves us with not nearly as complex characters. Also one of the issues I had with the og HP world is that JK will introduce concepts like wizard racism and slavery and then just like,, not really do anything about it or just have half-arsed redemption arcs whilst not ever actually exploring the root of the issue. And now i feel like the fandom is following in those footsteps unfortunately.

Anyways, i've been rambling for too long so I'll just leave it here. Sorry if this came off as mean spirited in anyway,, I just have a lot of thoughts™ and my family is sick of hearing them lol. These opinions are not set in stone however so I'd love to hear your thoughts on this subject! And while I'm talking about fatphobia in Fandoms, please tell me you noticed how obsessed the marauders Fandom is with characters being overly thin. Like, they'll hold up how they made Lilly fat occasionally, and sometimes even say they don't like thin Peter fan casts, then it's off to the races to make all the boys we love as thin as possible and say that it's just part of their character. Of course all of these teenage boys are as thin as humanly possible. Of course Sirius is thin as hell. Of course Remus is too. And so is regulus. And Barty. I even saw James being described as skinny. He's a teenage athlete, and you're describing him as skinny? How does he sustain all that mascle mass exactly? He should have Nick Nelson's build. And the rationalizations of it doesn't make it any better. Oh, it's just because Remus is sick so often. It's just because Regulus / Sirius have an eating disorder, or because they were starved by their mom. That's why all the fan art has them in so little clothes that show specifically their tiny waist and their thin bodies in general. I've only rarely seen the same in fan art of Lilly, and basically never with Peter. Because he's not who people are attracted to, they say. Well, first of all, why do you think that is? And Secondly, we don't have that much information about the rest of them being as skinny as they're depicted, aspacially not as teens, so that still doesn't explain why we're making them look basically heroine chic. As if half the Fandom isn't trans masc people who want to be like these characters, who are some of the only positive depictions of masculinity and masculine friendship out there. And as if the trans community isn't dealing with so much internelised fatphobia and Straightforward phatphobia towards others, too. As if the skinny white trans masc isn't a huge problem in diversifying our social idea of what a transmasculine body looks like. Maybe if we see these characters that people headcanon as trans so often not be fetishized for being super skinny it'll be a little easier to feel like we don't have to be that in order to be valid and loved. Nobody does. So, start making Sirius chubby. And Remus. And Regulus. And not just for the sake of giving them body issues. Also because they're people. I want a Remus that has a stomach. I want James with chubby arms. I want Regulus and Sirius that isn't the most extreme version of a twink you can think of. Or just have them look like they're in a healthy waight. We don't have to romanticize being skinny. We can romanticize being a human that grows and changes and struggles and thrives. That's what we're good at, as a Fandom. That and angst.

Hi yall. So I have finally calmed down from my sobbing crying. Yes I’m a dramatic person. No I’m not being dramatic when I say I sobbed. Art heist baby was an experience and I will never be the same. I found a character poll on twitter few weeks ago and I can't believe so many marauder fans were shocked that Severus is more popular than Barty and Rosier.

YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH I LAUGHED AT THIS, I CHOKED ON NOTHING 😭😭😭 i'm sure you're aware of people shipping regulus and james? before i stumbled again upon this abomination of a fandom, i was rather open minded to the idea of shipping anything as long as it's age appropriate, but i just don't have the patience for ships involved fabricated personalities where one of the parties involved's ENTIRE personality was snatched from My favorite character.

but its as you depict it! there IS a prejudiced and shallow component in the way people choose their faves, for the lack of personality and depth to not matter when the character is supposed to be "attractive". the whole "making snape to be ugly" always rubbed me the wrong way, for the poor and neglected kid to be bullied and antagonized, and everyone justifying it TO THIS DAY, favoring their rich, "supposedly conventionally attractive" main characters? from r*wling it shouldn't be surprising, but from everyone else to run away with it, justifying every ugly action from james or sirius, even lily? then they act as if they're any better than r*wling herself 🤡

i've been reluctantly into hp again for at least two or three months and every experience outside of the snape fanbase has been so exhausting. loving remus and find content of him that doesn't involve sirius or james or that doesn't misinterpret his character is also hard, i really can only trust snupin stans and absolutely nobody else 😔

I too found a twt poll that put remus/severus remus/regulus against each other and remus/regulus won by SO MANY votes!

Lol Idk if they did this out of spite but I found a huge ship poll with thousands of votes few months ago and remus/regulus was in bottom five. I guess they were upset that Snupin at least managed to be in top 20, while Snily and Snegulus were in top 10 lmao. Here's the link if you wanna check it out.

Ngl jegulus is just Wallmart jeverus with Walmart James. Idk how they got so popular in a short period of time. They have no interacting whatsoever in the canon lol.

Because they're shallow-minded and there's just no way to change their opinions. They are too deep in the fanfiction rabid hole they started treating it like canon. According to them, ugly people aren't allowed to make any mistakes. This is the type of discrimination we see in real life as well. I expect them to be better considering how they always turn their favs into gay feminist icons but well... I guess when they mention feminist, they mean ugly people exclusivity radical feminist.

Loving Remus and finding content of him that doesn't involve Sirius or James or that doesn't misinterpret his character is also hard

I barely follow any Remus' blogs/content creator anymore because whenever i search for them, at least 60% of them contain Wolfstar, while the other 40% MIGHT contain Severus' bashing. I'd rather stick and wait for Snupin shippers to drop more Remus Lupin contents. Well.. I guess some Remadora fans are fine but there's just too many Snaters out there. I'd rather take care of my mental health and not get involved with these people.

I changed my Andromeda and my Lily, using different face models. Specifically by looking at my old school photos and picking different classmates for them as well as the new drawings for Ted, Barty, Avery, Wilkes, and Mulciber. Only one actual friend sneaked in there, so hopefully none of those people will ever stumble across this and recognise themselves. 

i really just wanted to give Rodolphus a big beard so that’s all there was to that. 

I put Rodolphus in Lucius’ year and Rabastan in Regulus’ because I can.

I thought that when Snape was like 14 or something he grew his hair out long like Lucius’ which didn’t necessarily suit him. And that he came a cropper of the ‘if you live in my house, you follow my rules so cut your fucking hair’ argument with his dad, which in Severus’ case probably ended violently? 

Also while drawing him I always felt I could never make him ugly enough, or if i did then it didn’t match what was in my head, and then I came to think he probably wasn’t that ugly. He was just poor and not very good at taking care of himself. And kids are cruel. Don’t worry, Severus, you’ll grow up to look like Alan Rickman and it’ll all be fine :\ 

During the casting process my brain gave me little taglines for them:

Snape - Emo Edgelord

Regulus - Goth Twink

Rabastan - a Brain May Haircut with anxiety

Rosier - thinks he’s good-looking and is a dick about it

Avery - mediocre and blames everyone else for it

Wilkes - likes to get in fights and isn’t handsome or charming enough for anyone to want to stop him

Mulciber - whatever the wizarding equivalent of a gamerbro is

Barty - forgettable dweeb, because I forgot him until last. 

Lucius - thinks he has big dick energy but it’s just rich dick energy

Narcissa - finishing school bitch

because i have a headcanon that she did go to wizard finishing school. Because Bellatrix is a sociopath and Andromeda runs away with Ted, her parents freak out and send her off to learn how to be a Lady. Lucius perfects the art of shimmying up and down drainpipes that year.
