Magic Resonance, Estellions and the Basics of Blot
((worldbuilding LMAO, welcome to me bullshitting my way through biochemistry and cell signaling if something seems super inaccurate uhhh that's the magic part of the alchemy I'm describing /hj/lh))
Magic is made up of particles called 'estellions'. Fun Fact: 'Estelle' comes from the Latin word 'stella', meaning star. Scholars named the particle after this due to the old belief that wishing upon a star would work like magic - and grant someone their wish
While still a relatively new area of study, scientists have confirmed that estellions exist both as a part of genetic make up, and passively in the environment; they can be thought of almost as another element in the composition of air. One area of study that is very busy right now is learning how to quantify estellions in humanoids, and studying whether they proliferate over an individual's life/what prevents a high concentration of them as someone gets older
Although the characterization of these particles is not well established, we know that in the body, estellions are regulated by a negative feedback loop. As they are used/exercised by the casting of spells/use of magic, the resonance between particles is increased. This excited state results in the production of atramentiase - more commonly known as 'blot' - to form. These enzymes are the result of estellions being mutated by the environmental estellions.
Atramentiase in low concentrations is relatively harmless, however it builds up rather quickly in the body. This is why all mages are mandated to carry a magestone - as a health and safety precaution. The magical resonance is stronger between atramentiase and a mage stone than it is between atramentiase and healthy genetic estellions. This is because the mage stone is essentially so many concentrated environmental estellions that a crystal was able to form, causing a version of "active transport" to occur, where molecules in low concentration in the body move to a higher concentration in the stone. In other words. environmental estellions are attracted to other, higher concentrations of environmental estellions, like in magestones. Genetic estellions, their quantity and concentration dictate an individual's ability to wield environmental ones to supplement their magic pool. The more genetic estellions, the easier it tends to be for the individual to utilize the environmental estellions.
When a magic user casts a spell, they are using approximately 40% - 60% of their own estellions in relation to the composition of the spell. The rest of the spell is supplemented by environmental estellions. These environmental particles have often undergone several mutations due to being used by other mages, long lifespan resulting in the degradation of their composition, and other variables - in other words, they are not very bio-chemically stable. Upon introduction to the genetic estellions, anywhere from 5-75% of the environmental estellions are absorbed into the body. These foreign particles trigger an autophagic pathway, resulting in their breakdown. The residual magic is taken up by the genetic estellions, often mutating them, and the rest of the particle is disposed of like other cellular waste in the body. We don't know what factors impact the mutation rate or the uptake of environmental estellions yet.
The exception to this is when an individual uses their UM - they use 95-99% of their own estellions. Before they cast, environmental estellions still concentrate around their magestone like a normal spell, but far more of their estellions are exposed to foreign ones. This leads to more rapid blot build up.
There is a strong correlation between the amount of genetic estellions an individual has in comparison to the time it takes to metabolize 'blot'. Typically, the more estellions in someone's genetic code, the slower their system is to process out atramentiase. In other words, the larger someone's magic pool, the more likely they are to overblot.
Prof says we'll go over
how environmental estellions work more later this year, and in depth second year. For now we just need to know that they have a passive effect on nature as a whole, including abiotic components of an ecosystem.

The cold white tiles and harsh lights of The Connections' lab stung Miranda’s eyes. As she was led to the lab by a staff member, she wasn’t really paying attention to his introduction of the organization. Her mind was solely focused on getting to the lab and conducting her research to bring back her true daughter.
The staff led Miranda to the end of the hallway, where she recorded her fingerprint on a scanner by the lab door to unlock it, as instructed. The new lab was several times larger than the basement she had in the village, equipped with dedicated rooms for chemicals, samples, and various precision instruments.
Miranda looked the lab equipment with approval. Then she turned to the staff and asked, "Is there anything else I need to know? Other than the documentation and samples you'll provide me with shortly?"
The staff member found it difficult to understand why this taciturn scientist had such an intense presence. "Yes, we’ve arranged for a researcher to assist you with your experiments."
Miranda raised an eyebrow. "Does this researcher understand what my research’s about? I consider it a very... personal matter." She bent down, carefully observing the activity of a mold sample.
"Rest assured, besides our boss, only she and Dr. Droney know the details of your project." The staff member said, glancing toward the door where a figure stood. He then addressed Miranda, "Dr. Miranda, she’s here."
Miranda straightened up and looked at the doorway. A woman stood there, her hair a similar color to Miranda's past self and the present scientist Miranda, perhaps a slightly lighter shade of black, with shoulder-length curls that fell over her chest. She was shorter and slimmer than Miranda, but with her sharp judgment, Miranda could tell that the woman wasn’t as fragile as she appeared.
The researcher walked directly into Miranda's lab and reached out her right hand. "Mia Winters, a pleasure to meet you, Dr. Miranda."
“Greetings, Mia,” said Miranda, just two words. After five seconds, the strange silence in the air finally caught her attention. She realized she should shake the new researcher's hand with her hand. Feeling uncomfortable with the gesture, Miranda quickly pulled her hand back afterward, without really thinking about what she'd done.
Mia hesitated briefly, surprised by Miranda’s odd behavior, but quickly recovered and continued her greeting, "I'll be working with you for a while. I'm not an expert in biochemistry, but I can assist you, and... handle some unnecessary trouble."
"Unnecessary trouble?" Miranda asked, puzzled.
"You know, sometimes test subjects have issues. I'm quite good at preventing those things from happening." Mia hinted.
Miranda's instinct was correct. Mia Winters did indeed have the capability to deal with failed test subjects. Though Miranda herself could easily handle such matters without breaking a sweat, she was not in her village. So, she smiled and said, "Welcome to my lab, Mia."

Miranda accepted the coffee Mia handed her. Having another assistant by her side was something she was certainly not used to. She remembered how, fifty or sixty years ago, her student Spencer left Romania because of their ideological differences. Since then, she hadn’t taken on another assistant. Few people truly understood her ultimate goal. Perhaps Alcina did, but she had her three daughters, through whom she found a connection. Miranda, however, never felt the same bond with any of her "children" as she did with Eva. Miranda convinced herself that they were merely vessels, but she couldn’t ignore the glimpses of her own life with her daughter that she saw in the Dimitrescu family. Those fragments pieced together the warmth of the days from nearly a century ago.
"Dr. Miranda? Miranda?" A gentle voice called her back from her memories.
"Hmm?"
"The sample you put in the centrifuge is ready. You can check it now."
"Alright." Miranda tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"You always seem to drift into deep thought." Mia remarked as she watched Miranda walk into the equipment room.
"It's nothing. I just like to think about things while working. It helps me focus." Miranda replied, opening the lid of the centrifuge.
"I feel the same sometimes. When you're doing something you love, your mind tends to wander, doesn’t it?" Mia said, leaning against the doorframe and watching Miranda carefully take out the centrifuge tubes.
"Maybe." Miranda replied. She wasn't sure whether she truly enjoyed these tedious experiments, but they were too meaningful to ignore, demanding a century of her time without pause.

Eleven at night, Mia handed Miranda the organized data. Watching Miranda intently review the figure, Mia quietly asked, “Miranda, don’t you need to take a break? Every morning when I arrive, you're already here, and every night when I leave, you're still here. Have you even been home?”
Miranda turned and sat at the lab stool, picking up a pen and scribbling notes on the documents, vaguely responding to Mia’s concern. "Hmm? Home? Of course, I've been home. My Lords and villagers all know I’ll be away for a while."
“Not your village, I mean your apartment here. Wow, the way you talk about your hometown makes it sound like you’re not that close to your neighbors.” Mia remarked, once again finding Miranda rather strange. Perhaps she’d been overworking.
It wasn’t until then that Miranda realized what she had just said. A thin layer of sweat formed on her forehead, but since her back was turned to Mia, she had enough time to calm her rising panic. She followed, “Yes, I’m not particularly close with them.” That much wasn’t a lie. “Mia, it’s late. You should head home. You must have noticed you're spending more and more time in the lab each day.”
“Long enough to realize you never take a proper rest.”
“That’s not what I meant.” Miranda set her pen down and swiveled on the stool to face Mia. “Even though this experiment is important to me, there’s no need for you to stay here so long on my account.”
“I know about Eva,” Mia said softly, lowering her head as she looked sadly at Miranda, whose blue eyes quickly filled with grief. “I’m so sorry, Miranda. I’ve never mentioned it before because I didn’t want to bring up painful memories, but I know you’ve never really moved on. I’ve heard you were absorbed in trying to bring Eva back even before you came to The Connections. And now that you’ve found new hope here, your dedication has only intensified. I can’t imagine how you maintain that drive, I can’t fully understand it, but I urge you to think about yourself for once. Maybe go to your apartment and get some sleep, or return to your village. Even if you’re not close to your neighbors, the mountain air would do you some good. If not, there’s actually a rest area behind the equipment room with a small bed. I guess you’ve forgotten it.”
Mia left the lab. Miranda stood from her stool and walked toward the equipment room. Sure enough, there was a door in the corner. Miranda must have opened it when she first arrived at the lab, but she’d quickly forgotten about it, as its contents hadn’t interested her at the time.
Miranda opened the door for the second time, and inside was indeed a small bed. There wasn’t any dust on it, indicating that Mia often rested there. A small porcelain pot sat on the windowsill, holding a plump lithops plant that was clearly well cared for.
On the nightstand, there were two glasses, one of them labeled “Mia”.
Miranda took off her lab coat and poured herself a cup of water with the other glass. She didn’t need sleep, so she simply lay on the bed, quietly reflecting. Her thoughts went first to Eva. There wasn’t a moment she didn’t think of her daughter. She recalled how earlier that day, she had smiled to herself, thinking of Eva, and wondered if Mia had noticed from the other end of the lab. It was a memory of five-year-old Eva mimicking the sounds of various animals, from chickens to pigs to goats and even crows, each imitation spot-on. Miranda had laughed as she scooped little Eva into her arms and set her on her lap, encouraging her to continue recounting her exciting adventures of the day.
Miranda tried to blur the memories of the Spanish flu outbreak, but it was clear she could never escape those dark days. One by one, her neighbors had died, and then misfortune had struck the only person she held dear. But the misfortune never came for her, nor did fortune, not until the day she buried Eva.
After that, she became the center of power. The faces of the villagers flashed through her mind like a carousel, along with the series of failed vessels. Then there was this white laboratory, and Mia.
Miranda told herself it was merely because Mia didn’t know about her status in the village and viewed her as an ordinary person which Miranda found novel. It wasn’t because Mia held any special significance to her.

Miranda told Mia that she planned to return to her hometown for a week of rest. Upon hearing the news, Mia could barely contain her excitement, she nearly hugged Miranda, though she stopped when Miranda stiffened in place.
Miranda changed back into her black robe. She descended to the basement and switched on the lights. The dim laboratory momentarily disoriented her. Ancient books lay scattered across the table, and the Cadou pulsed rhythmically inside its container. Everything on the shelves was arranged just as before, and the photo of her and Eva remained in its place, slowly fading with time.
Miranda pulled out a new photo and placed it on the shelf. It was a group photo with The Connections team, a symbol of her new hope. Strangely, the photo was in black and white, though Miranda didn’t pay attention to that oddity. What she did notice, however, was Mia smiling in the picture.
After filing away the data she had brought from The Connections lab, Miranda didn’t stand at her bench as she usually would. Instead, she sat on her bed and opened her diary.

Mia Winters suggested I take some time to rest at home, and I followed her advice. I rarely allow anyone this close to me, but she hasn’t made me uncomfortable. In fact, she’s been a great help with my research.
I hope we can bring Eva back.
Wait, did she just write "we"?
The villagers noticed that Mother Miranda was less strict when conveying the Black God's will in the church. When they shared the current situation in the village with her, she seemed absent-minded.
The Lords picked up on this during their meeting as well. She didn’t admonish Heisenberg when he called her "Miranda" directly without using her title, until Alcina criticized him, causing tensions to escalate between the two. It was only when Angie chimed in with a sharp "fight, fight" that Miranda snapped back to reality, reminded of her current predicament.

A week later, Miranda returned to The Connections lab. Mia handed her a cup of coffee, looking cheerful as usual. “Welcome back, Miranda. Good morning.”
“Good morning, Mia.” Miranda said with a smile as she took the cup.
“It’s clear that the week off did you good. You probably won’t accidentally drink the nutrient solution from the beaker as water again.” Mia teased, giving Miranda a playful grin, to which Miranda could only chuckle helplessly.
“Speaking of which, the mold colony report from the week you were gone is ready.” Mia led Miranda to the computer and opened the monitoring system, showing her the recent research on the E-type mold. “Out of two hundred samples, one hundred in the control group without Cadou did not produce any fully formed organisms. They remain in loose colony forms within the culture medium. Five of them exhibited some human traits, like sample 23, which developed humanoid palms, and sample 57, which produced teeth, but with sharp dentalcrowns, resembling a beast rather than a human arc.”
“In the experimental group with Cadou, all one hundred samples were more active than the control group. You can see them pulsing rhythmically, similar to human blood flowing through the colonies. Seventeen of the samples have developed mostly humanoid structures, though they are still covered in thick mold.”
Miranda pointed to one of the samples. “Sample 119 looks more active than the others, the mold is moving across it more quickly.”
“Exactly. It should be the most successful one. I examined its physical structure and found that its limbs are slenderer and its mouth is smaller, with a hyoid bone appearing in the throat.” Mia explained.
Miranda felt a surge of excitement and instinctively placed her hand on Mia’s shoulder. “Do you think sample 119 could be...”
“Are you thinking of sequencing its DNA?” Mia anticipated Miranda's thoughts.
Miranda nodded.
Mia skillfully assisted Miranda in extracting the “blood” sample, placing the processed samples into the expensive instrument.
“We just need to wait a day.” Mia said.
“Thank you, Mia.” Miranda offered Mia a warm smile.
The lab felt particularly warm that day, perhaps summer was approaching. Miranda sat on the bed in the small room, spending the hour before the results were due, contemplating every possibility.
Mia appeared in the doorway, leaning against the frame. “You don’t need to be so nervous. We all saw how successful it was, the compatibility must be high.”
“I know, I know, Mia.” Miranda lowered her hand, which had been anxiously touching her cheeks, and looked up at Mia. “I’m glad everything is progressing positively, I’m just worrying about the future.”
“Worrying about the future? You just said the experiment will go well.” Mia asked, puzzled.
“It’s not about the experiment. I’m worried about life after all this ends,” Miranda sighed. “You know my life has revolved solely around Eva. I rarely pay attention to the trivialities of my life and other matters.”
“You’re worried that after everything succeeds, you won’t be able to adjust to that kind of life?” Mia walked in and sat down beside Miranda.
“Yes, my life has changed so much compared to years ago. I’m concerned I won’t be able to return to a normal routine with Eva. I don’t know what path to choose.”
“Do you want to take her back to your village?” Mia asked gently.
“I don’t know. That would bring about significant changes. Everything in the village would be very... different.” Miranda thought about the order she had worked hard to establish nearly a century ago. Would it all crumble with Eva’s return?
Mia was unaware of Miranda’s true background, she could only assume that the villagers would view a person’s resurrection as a miracle, which would undoubtedly shock them. In fact, it just required advanced scientific technology and relentless effort. “I think they will gradually come to understand everything. Many unusual events happen in our world, but everything calms down over time.” Mia placed her hand gently on Miranda’s back. “Eva’s mother is a powerful woman. I can’t believe she has such strong willpower to face all of this.”
Miranda turned to look into Mia’s eyes and, for the first time, noticed that her eyes weren’t entirely brown, they had a ring of deep green around the edges. “And you’ve been here with me through all of this.”
“You just need someone by your side.” Mia said, sensing the warmth emanating from Miranda, subtle yet noticeable only up close.
“And that someone is you.” Miranda reached out and took her hand, her thumb lightly resting on the back of Mia’s hand.
“Miranda, are you shaking my hand?” Mia suddenly laughed.
“Hmm? No, how come?”
“When we first met, you shook my hand like this. If you hadn’t done it so forcefully and quickly, and hadn’t bent down, I might have thought you were going to kiss my hand like those gentlemen of old.” Mia teased.
A blush crept up Miranda’s pale ears, as she completely forgot those details.
“To save you from this embarrassment, we can check the results now.” Mia said, pulling Miranda to her feet.
“Match compatibility with Eva's DNA reaches 93.87%. Miranda, you did it!” Mia leaned down and hugged Miranda, who was sitting in front of the screen.
Miranda reached out and hugged Mia back. “Yes, we did it.”

Just a little update
...so, I've been gone for a hot second...
Anyone who missed the last update, last spring I decided to go back to school to get my DPT. I'm very luck that there's a new program starting not too far from me that will be mostly virtual (until clinicals) so I can continue working as a PTA while I'm going to school.
The good news? I was accepted.
The bad news was that I was short 17 credits because I had a BA instead of a BS. SO I've been working the last year pretty much around the clock with my normal full time PTA job (where things have been ROCKY but are getting better), teaching and choreographing on the side, and taking Life Span Development, Introduction to Statistics, Physics I, Physics I lab, Chemistry I, Chemistry I lab, and I'm working on finishing up Biochemistry now. While it's been really accessible since I've been able to take these courses online, they've been (imo) much harder than taking them in person because I'm basically teaching myself all these concepts.
It has been exhausting, to say the least. I've had so little time for the relaxing things in life. Fics have sat untouched. My relatively new hobby of crocheting last year has been rarely done- only a few minutes here and there at night.
As soon as I finish this up I get a few months off before the program starts, which I'm thankful for. It's a 3 year program (graduating December of 2028) so I need the break before burnout kicks in hard.
All this to say, hopefully I'll be back soon. I still plan on finishing/posting my Last of Us Joel/reader fic, I have two half done Mando/reader fics I'd love to get out there, and I miss writing Steggy. I would have loved to make time to make being on here happen more, but it just wasn't in the cards.
But- real life first, right?
That's the update. All good things. Just... busy.

In hindsight, Hari probably should have told the team his allergies to start.
There just wasn’t a convenient time for him to do it. It felt weird.
He already felt their judging eyes on him because he was human. Humans weren’t necessarily looked down upon, but it was quite the common consensus that they had more biological flaws than most other races.
This was, of course, made worse by Hari’s precarious condition.
Introducing himself as the human missing a leg with a blood circulation disorder, an inflammatory lung disease, and food allergies was not something Hari imagined would get him much in the way of respect.
So, he stayed quiet.
After all the introductions and mission briefings came and went, everyone retreated to their respective rooms to settle in. A message over the intercom told Hari that Nyla, the pilot, was going to start making dinner.
He supposed now could be a good time to mention it. He remembered how to get to the kitchen, and Nyla should be in there cooking already, but Hari had just taken off his prosthesis. He didn’t feel like going through the trouble.
Besides, what were the chances that, out of all the things in the galaxy, Nyla made something Hari couldn’t eat.
An hour came and went before Nyla’s chipper voice came over the intercom once again.
“Food’s ready, everyone! Come on down to the kitchen!”
Hari perked up. Now that he thought of it, he was hungry. He hadn’t eaten anything more than protein bars and yogurt cups since the initial launch. An actual meal sounded wonderful.
He grabbed his crutches and began making his way to the kitchen.
As he walked through the halls of The Scarab, he couldn’t help but feel a bit astonished. Just a few days ago, he was on his home planet, Earth. Then, he was shipped off to Asto’is. Now, here he was, floating in space with a group of strangers towards countless unexplored territories and potentially dangerous star systems.
What a story he was going to have to tell.
He arrived at the kitchen and quickly saw he was the last to do so.
Captain Nieven Alaric, the Asto’isian, was sitting at the head of the table, typing away on his detpad. A cigarette was held loosely in his free hand, and he brought it up to his lips with a deep inhale. His brow was furrowed, like he was trying to figure something out.
Zel, the Huelxcan, was sitting towards the middle of the table, but her entire body was tensed up. She looked terribly awkward, like she’d rather be anywhere but there. Her gaze remained trained at a spot on the table, but upon Hari’s entry, she lifted her head. Hari met her eyes on accident and flashed a small smile, and he could have sworn she snarled at him.
Vinny, the Z’edin, was sitting opposite to Zel, but they looked significantly less uncomfortable. On the contrary, their knees were pulled up to their chest with their own detpad balancing on top. A peek over their shoulder told Hari that they were reading.. a scientific article? On biochemistry? For fun? That was perhaps scarier than the Huelxcan staring daggers at him from across the table.
And finally, indicated by the soft humming from the kitchen, Hari caught a glimpse of Nyla plating the final dish with her back turned to him.
Hari hadn’t seen many Haryen in his time. The race preferred not to make too much contact with the other PAGE territories, so seeing one out in the open felt odd.
Still, Hari didn’t need to know much about the race to know their signature trait—large crimson wings on their back with a span almost longer than their full height. Hari also didn’t need to know much about the race to know that this particular Haryen’s wings were not paradigmatic of her people’s.
Nyla’s wings were small and curled tight against her body. The muscles in them looked atrophied and shriveled, and even the way they moved with her body seemed off.
Nyla didn’t offer much of an explanation. She simply stated that she was born differently and left it at that. She didn’t owe anyone an explanation anyway; Hari figured. Still, it was not something someone saw every day.
Hari finally took a seat beside Vinny and rested his crutches against the edge of the metal table. Vinny’s gaze flitted to him before coming back to their detpad.
Hari risked another glance at their screen, and saw that not only were they finished with the first article, but they had moved on to another longer one. Hari had to ask.
“What’cha reading about?”
Vinny’s ears flicked at his voice. “Botany.”
“Botany?”
“Mhm. The first planet on the course is a forest planet, so I wanted to brush up.”
“I see—”
“Do you know much about botany? You’re the medic, after all. Figured you’ve at least taken some life science classes, but I don’t know how much time the curriculum would have spent on botany specifically.”
“Well, I was in highschool when—”
“I guess if it was a general biology class, the content would be broader, so you probably spent a little bit on each subsection. Still, I think botany is underappreciated. There’s so much to learn about a planet based on what kind of flora thrives in it.”
“I agree—”
“Plus, it can tell you so much about culture! Your planet, for example, has such a diverse ecosystem with so many different biomes. The different ways your people use the plants in each area is fascinating!”
“Thank you?”
“Not to mention—”
“Dinner is ready!” Nyla chirped, padding into the room with plates precariously balanced on her arms. Hari silently sighed in relief.
Nieven set down his detpad immediately and stood up to take two of the plates from Nyla.
“Thank you very much for making dinner, Nylath... Nylathrania.”
The syllables sounded clumsy on the Captain’s lips and a slight flush creeped up his cheeks at his fumbling.
“Oh please, just call me Nyla. Nylathrania is a hard one, even back on Harye.”
Nieven cleared his throat. “Very well. Thank you, Nyla.”
“It’s my pleasure! What better way to welcome you all onto my ship than good food?” She smiled and set a plate in front of each person at the table before taking her own seat next to Zel.
Hari smiled right back at her and, he figured he could try probing about the ingredients. Subtly, of course. “Yes, thank you, Nyla. This looks good! What is it?”
“Oh! I wanted to start with something pretty universally liked. It’s noodles with a darzel nut sauce, wozoik leaves, and some poultry from Earth! It’s pretty simple. I didn’t want to try anything too wild on the first night.”
Vinny, finally, lifted their head from their detpad and faced Nyla. “You took the meat out of mine, right?”
“Mhm!”
Vinny’s tail swayed slightly and a slight smile overtook their face. “Thank you, Nyla.”
Hari suddenly felt very stupid. If the kid could let Nyla know about their dietary preferences, why couldn’t Hari?
Still, it was fine. Nothing she said was on his allergy list. He’d just let her know after this meal and everything would be fine.
Nyla picked up her fork. “Well, dig in everyone!”
And with that, they did.
Zel sniffed the food experimentally and swirled a forkful of noodles onto the prongs of the utensil before lifting it to her mouth. The usual scowl on her face lessened greatly and she turned to Nyla.
“You made this?” She said softly.
“...I did. Why? Is something wrong with it?” Nyla almost looked sheepish.
Zel said nothing. She simply turned her face back down to her plate and began scarfing down the noodles.
Vinny was following suit, tail swaying freely as they forked mouthful after mouthful into their mouth.
Nieven was a bit more polite. He ate slowly, and in small bites, but the enjoyment of the food was written all over his face in the way his eyes shone.
Alright, now, Hari needed to try it.
He scooped some of the noodles onto his fork, took a bite and—wow. If this was the kind of food he’d be eating for the next few years, he had no complaints.
The nutty flavor of the sauce was light and fresh, enhanced further by the aromatic greens. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, and the noodles were cooked to perfection. Hari’s eyes nearly rolled back into his head.
Nyla swallowed a mouthful of food and tapped her finger idly on the table. “So... How is everyone feeling about the trip so far?”
Vinny perked their head up. “So far it’s been interesting. Your ship is really cool. I can’t believe you fly it yourself.”
“I do! She’s my pride and joy.” She turned to Hari. “You’re somewhat of an aerospace engineer, right? What kind of ships have you worked on?”
Hari startled at his name and glanced up.
“Me? I’ve worked on a few. I worked mostly on airplanes, though.”
“Oh? So a bit different, then?”
Hari nodded and opened his mouth to respond, but found that his tongue didn’t move the way he intended it to. It felt tingly, like it was swollen in his mouth. He furrowed his brows.
“Sorry. I just— My throat feels weird.” He swallowed convulsively.
Nyla tilted her head and leaned forward to get a better look at him. Zel followed suit, sharing a glance with Nieven.
“Are you okay?” Nyla asked.
“I’m fine... I’m...” Hari swallowed again as an abrupt wave of nausea had him clamping his mouth shut.
Nieven suddenly turned his gaze to meet Hari. “Hari? Are you sure? You’re quite... flushed.”
Hari nodded and scratched at the side of his neck. Stars, when did it get so itchy?
And then it occurred to him. The way he was feeling—the way it felt like his throat was swelling and the way his skin felt too hot for his body—stars, he was allergic to the damn food.
Of all the foods in the galaxy! This delicious meal was one his body decided was a threat! He would have groaned if he could.
Instead, he let out a vaguely choked whine and clawed at his throat, desperately pulling at his collar to get some air. Hives were starting to break out along his arms and shoulders rapidly, and the heat was searing.
Everyone was staring at him now. Even Vinny, who had set their detpad on the table, was in a hurry to get a proper look at Hari.
“Hari?” Vinny questioned.
They stood and leaned over, scrutinizing his face. They looked like they were racking their brain for something. Hari truly hoped they were as smart as they came across, because he wasn’t sure he had the faculties to explain what he needed. With their knowledge on Earth and biology, they were probably Hari’s best bet.
They suddenly jolted with thought. “Anaphylaxis! Allergic reaction! That’s what's going on, isn’t it? Your symptoms match!”
Bingo. Hari nodded frantically, pulling in a wheezing breath. Shit, it really was getting difficult to breathe. He needed to do something—and fast.
“Allergic?! Why didn’t you say something earlier!” Nyla shrieked, practically leaping over the table to reach Hari. “What do we do?! You’re the medic!”
Hari wanted to tell her to relax and that it would probably be fine once he got his epi-pen, but he could quite literally feel his airways shrinking and he figured that might not be true for long.
Vinny tapped away on their detpad before whipping their head back up. “We have to give you epinephrine, don’t we? Where the hell are we going to get that?!”
Hari vaguely gestured to the bedrooms, hoping someone would get the hint. He had a small bright red first-aid kit in his luggage, left out in the open. Never had he ever been so grateful for his disorganized unpacking.
“On it,” Nieven muttered, racing toward the hall. Hari tugged at his collar once again, wheezing desperately. It felt like his head was going to explode now. He was sure he was quite the sorry sight with how red he felt his face getting. Not a very good first impression.
Finally, the captain came sprinting back with the little red pouch. He all but threw it onto the table and ripped it open, before realizing he had no idea what he was even looking for.
“Epi..pen..” Hari managed to rasp out, doubling over when another awful wave of nausea overtook him.
Vinny watched Nieven frantically search for a few more moments before grumbling and lunging over to snatch the pouch from him. They procured the item immediately and began to read over it.
“It’s a needle?”
Hari nodded, wondering why that mattered. He didn’t care if someone had to cut his other damn leg off to get the epinephrine in him—he just wanted to breathe.
Vinny uncapped the needle and hesitantly crouched beside Hari. They were moving at far too leisurely a pace. Hari shot a weak glare.
He would have done it himself, if he could. It’s just that his hands were numb. He could barely lift his arm, let alone have the dexterity to administer it properly. Maybe he should start having his epi-pen with him for every meal. Stars, his head was spinning.
“I can’t do it!” Vinny cried, suddenly pulling away.
“For fuck’s sake—” Zel plucked the pen from their hands, skimmed the directions, and plunged the needle directly into Hari’s right leg with no hesitation.
Hari had never been so grateful in his life.
In just a few moments, Hari felt his breath starting to come easier. He slumped back against his chair and gulped down sweet, sweet oxygen.
No one said anything for a beat. And then, Nyla smacked the back of Hari’s head.
“You idiot! If you’re allergic to something you need to tell me! What was your plan if we didn’t get the epi-pen in time?! I would have been responsible for manslaughter!”
Hari blinked. “I didn’t know I’d be allergic to it.”
Vinny stepped in and crossed their arms. “But you have existing allergies, yes? I could have done some research on how similar the food was to your allergens. Darzel nuts, for example, are remarkably chemically similar to peanuts.”
Oh. That explains it, then. Hari felt a blush creep up on his cheeks. He said nothing.
Nyla let out a soft hmph and pointed a finger at Hari. “After we clean up here and I make you something else to eat, you’re going to sit down with me and make a list of your allergies. All of them. This won’t happen again.”
Hari could tell she meant to be vaguely reassuring, but with the way she said it, it sounded like a threat. He gulped and nodded.
Vinny let out a soft laugh that doubled as a sigh of relief. “Welcome to the expedition, I suppose.”

So I’m creating a character and I’d like some varying opinions on matters. (They’re to be used in DND but also any story telling medium)
Introduction, backstory: The concept of the character is that they are “birthed” by another character of mine I currently call the Geneticist. In a standard fantasy world, the Geneticist comes from a hyper evolved civilization of elves who decided to focus on innovating their understanding of magic and the material world into sciences, instead of settling into old traditions. The Geneticist is an equivalent pre/post doc in his studies which are, obviously, genetics and biochemistry and has developed the technology which could incorporate the genetic material of other beings into his own to do wild shit. However the “elders” say the work is too risky and while theoretically possible they shouldn’t test it as no one would/should agree. Now the Geneticist is unhappy with this but does respect the free will of other’s to participate or not.
This leads to the Geneticist leaving the society to pursue his research. Adventures and development occur and frankly I love this character so much by themselves I should make another post about them….Moving on to the current topic though—
Later in life, the Geneticist works on a project to create a new sentient being. Using mushrooms (cause they’re so perfectly odd and unique), the Geneticist designs and specializes various types of fungi to act as different organs and tissues and Frankensteins this new being into existence. I really like the themes of Frankenstein and wish to parallel them, however where Victor Frankenstein abandons his Creation and is frankly unable to handle the situation at all, the Geneticist persists. Because they wanted this and they must see the experiment through to its very end.
Again, I have not worked out a name but for the sake of being coherent I’ll refer to the creature as Fung-I (cause why not).
I have details as to physical appearance and personality vaguely worked out. Those details are not the topic I’m focusing on though I’d love questions to be asked about literally anything about this concept!!! If not serious though at least make it funny.
My issue is free will and motivations. See I have a Catholic perspective of free will and have about two definitions which are (very basically) “choosing to follow God’s will, or not” and “being able to choose between two good/bad/evil options”. But here’s the thing, Fung-I’s closest thing to God as a creator is the Geneticist and the definitions of “good” and “bad” can be extremely subjective and are usually based upon what a person grew up learning. Kohlberg’s theory of moral development, to my understanding, does not elaborate on good/bad/evil and speaks more to developing thought out understandings of morality up to defining “objective moral truths”.
See, this is an issue because the purpose of the project of the Genticist was not only to make a completely new complex creature but also to see how it integrates into the ecosystems. They wanted to make the passive decomposer (fungi) to be active. In a way they created a new predator and wished to see how it handled itself. And so they designed it to be humanoid because (in most fantasy though not all) humanoids are the most sentient. They designed Fung-I to be vibrant because they hypothesized it would attract before it repelled. The Geneticist imbued a their creation with charged evolutionary abilities to always adapt and be the next step (not only to improve themselves but also cause the rest of nature to have to adapt in tandem.)
So this is the motivations the Geneticist, the creator, has and teaches to Fung-I. But now we are at free will and how that affects the personality, morality, and development of the character. More importantly, what is it the allows a rational being to have free will versus a “common animal”? Which, in the real world, we observe to be as intelligent as small children.

So it’s been a while huh - a re introduction
Hi, I’m Violette, nice to meet you.
The header of this blog states that I’m a second year med student, it was the case, in 2020/2021. I finish med school in a less than a week after six years. S I X like the musical only with less beheading and more crying.
You may or may not remember me from the blurry pictures, the hating on biochemistry and that one post where I yell about the inherent violence of studying medicine but then again that was half a decade ago.
So let me reintroduce myself.
Im 25, from France and I study medicine, that’s been my whole life these past 3 years and no it’s not a healthy lifestyle.
Im pretty sure I want to be a neurologist even though one of my friends pretends it’s not a real specialty because they don’t cure anything, but what does he know ? The guy wants to be a surgeon and cut up problems from people.
Recently my hobbies have included, true crime podcasts, doomscrolling on instagram and starting at the ceiling. And touching grass at least once a week.
Yeah this blog is not the only thing that needs a good cleaning.
What I’m hoping to achieve here is going back to the hopeful student I was and picking up parts of what made her so happy to get up and learn and filing what happened these past few years. Maybe it’ll even earn me a good grade in therapy!

Meet My OCs- Gwendolyn "Gwen" Price (TBITB)

I got a lot of really great feedback about my OC Gwen from the Boys in the Boat fandom (thank you so much everyone!) when I introduced her in my most recent story A Perfectly Good Heart, and I'm planning on writing more about her and Don soon. But as I currently barely have the time to breathe let alone write (give it up for senior year of college) here is a quick introduction to Gwen's backstory to (hopefully) tide people over.
Gwendolyn "Gwen" Price was born on February 11th, 1915, in Seattle, Washington. Her parents are both graduates of UW (her father is the class of 1908 and her mother is the class of 1910), and she grew up in a modest house across the water from the university campus. She is an only child, and is especially close to her father, who is a doctor. He not only inspired her to want to become a doctor as well, but also taught her to row as he rowed men's four when he was a student.
When Gwen meets Don in the fall of 1936, she's a senior at UW, pre-med and majoring in Biochemistry. Every morning, before her first class of the day, she rows across the Montlake Cut in her father's boat to get to campus, and this is how she first catches Don's eye and the two of them meet.
Gwen is a woman of few words, but she isn't shy. It's more that she's so busy and focused at any given moment that she doesn't want to waste time talking- she gets right to the point. Around Don, however, she does speak more than she does with anyone else. She's driven to the point that it often gets in the way of her relationships with other people, and she can even come across as rude sometimes due to her bluntness. Despite this, she's got a good heart and has a strong desire to help people in whatever way she can. Gwen and Don often balance each other out when it comes to interpersonal relationships- he's a bit more perceptive when it comes to people's feelings than she is, while she's much more self-assured than he is and so doesn't put up with nonsense from anybody.
