"I need to do a cricothyroidotomy," says Aaron, adjusting the IV line. "Eyes on my face, Phoenix, I need to start. Eyes on me, yeah?"

Phoenix looks up into Aaron's face and blinks. His eyes are very brown, eyebrows furrowed. All wavering. They can't breathe, god, they can't breathe, they try automatically and all they can do is choke on blood, oh god, they've already died multiple times they don't want to die again, but they can't–

"Eyes on me. Injection's done, I'm starting to cut, eyes on me, you'll be fine. Squeeze this, stay still, eyes on me."

Phoenix's hand feels blindly until they find... something, squeezing and squeezing and squeezing, trying to ignore the 'not breathing' part of things. But they can't breathe, they can't breathe, there's blood everywhere, it smells metallic and they're choking on it, all they get is blood, they can't breathe oh god they're dying, they're going to die again, it's over and over and it won't stop because they can't get the blood out, they can't–

"Phoenix! I need you to stay calm. I'm here for you, we're going to get you breathing, but you need to calm down. Squeeze the ball, concentrate on me, look at me, Phoenix. You'll be okay. Stay still, try and calm down, I know it's hard but you're going to be okay."

Phoenix tries. They look up at Aaron and just about see him, vision blurred and greying, squeezing less than before. They try to concentrate on staying still, not the blood, not their mouth that hurts so much, it's agonising, not– not–

There's a strange feeling in their windpipe, like something's being pushed inside. It feels weird and wrong and they don't like it.

They can't move. They can't take it out. Their windpipe doesn't hurt so much but everything else does and they can't even move. It's easier to breathe now but god, it hurts. They gasp, trying to gulp in air, that doesn't work, and then it feels weird and tastes kind of metallic but there's air, there's air, oh god there's air. It's much further down than they're used to but they can breathe again, they can do it, there's air and everything's not quite so fuzzy anymore.

Hurts, though. It's okay, they've had worse.

"You've got it Phoenix. You're doing it, you're okay, keep your eyes on me and keep breathing. It's just me here, you're doing well. Focus on me."

Phoenix tries to obey, gripping the sides of the bed for balance, the cold grounding them.

"That's good. You're doing well. The next thing we need to do is splint your broken bones, before they heal wrong and we have to rebreak them. I'll give you morphine through your IV, and another injection of lidocaine, that should help with the pain. I need to wire your jaw, it'll be scary but given your healing factor it shouldn't be for long. Okay? You're getting there, Phoenix, you're doing really well. Focus on me, try to stay calm."

Phoenix tries, they really do. They can breathe now, that's good, it's not breathing through their mouth but it's still air. But as Aaron turns to fetch the wire, Phoenix panics. The only reason they don't thrash is that some part of their brain knows that it would be a bad idea to knock the IV out. Aaron won't be pleased with them and he might punish them, or stop giving them painkillers.

Why is he giving them painkillers again? They don't need them. They don't need them to be gentle, it's weird.

"Try to calm down. It's okay, Phoenix, you're going to be okay. You don't need to look so disbelieving at the painkillers, y'know? Squeeze this as hard as you can. It won't be wired for long. You'll have to eat liquid food, but it's okay, I promise. Let's get this done before you heal wrong."

And Phoenix... they shut down. There's wire and what looks like pliers and Aaron's going to feed them and give them painkillers, and they can't cope. They're terrified and they don't understand, and they just... shut down completely.

The world is fuzzy, their heart pounding, everything seems far away. It's all... wrong.

They'll understand at some point, maybe. But not now. Not when they're not even here.

They don't know where they are. But it's not here.

DAY 26: forced to choose

Finn pressed his nose closer, too wolf to understand, but aware it made him feel better. His chest burned, and the line between wolf and human had long since blurred.

Fao stroked over his ears, soothing him. What he’d done - what they’d both done - had been undeniably stupid, but they’d needed to do it. They had to save Steve. He was everything. 

Soon things got more under control. The fire was dealt with, and the wolf response able to get to treating Finn. Steve was taken to hospital, Finn transported over there too. Fao tried to claim he was fine, but they were hearing none of it, and he was dragged in too. 

Finn wasn't doing great, and they were reasonably limited with what they could do while he was wolf. Which, of course, raised more issues. He wasn’t entirely compliant either, snapping out in pain and discomfort. They were stuck between a rock and a hard place: keep working on him as a wolf, with fewer resources and staff; or force the shift, possibly create more issues, but have a larger, more specialised team.

They’d insisted on keeping Fao in for observation, given how long he’d spent inside, though he wasn’t happy about it. He felt fine, just tired, though he knew Finn was worse. He wanted to go to his brother, to find out what was going on with him, but they wouldn’t let him. THey wouldn’t let him see Steve either, and so he was just sat in bed scowling at the nurses. 

In the end, they'd decided to force the shift, a mix of drugs they'd worked on over the years. Finn was far from impressed, going from reasonably pain free and settled to human and writhing on the bed. 

They moved quickly, knocking him out and tubing him in hopes to settle him. 

Of course, Sheila and Fred had been told what was going on, that both of their sons had been admitted, that they were likely going to have to force Finn to shift to better treat him. 

Fao had managed to speak to them on the phone, explain what had happened, the state the clinic had been in. They told him they were heading to the hospital now, that it wouldn’t take long, and he was glad of it. Despite his insistence that he was alright, he felt like crap, both physically and mentally. He just wanted to be with his brother, never mind how he was feeling. If he couldn’t have that, at least he’d be able to see his parents. 

Both Finn and Steve were kept in their ICU, while Fao was left in observation. When Sheila and Fred arrived, they hesitated, forced to pick and choose between their boys. In the end, they headed up to Finn, intending to spend ten minutes with their youngest before staying longer with Fao. They hoped that by having more adult presence, they might be able to break Fao out of observation and up to Finn, too. 

Fao sat waiting, feeling awful. The nurses had been fussing a bit, his obs apparently weren’t good and he needed more oxygen, which didn’t make him feel particularly good. They definitely wouldn’t let him see Finn, or Steve, and he was worried about the both of them in ICU. Nobody had told him much else than that, though Fred and Sheila had explained he was human now. He knew they were coming in, that it wouldn’t take too long for them to get there, and yet the time dragged by. They’d not appeared on the ward, not come to see him. He couldn’t lie that it hurt - he knew they’d probably gone to Finn, it made sense, but he wanted to see them. He texted them, just to see if they’d made it in okay, and then went back to trying to get some rest.

They spent a little while with Finn, but they both wanted to check on Fao. Besides, Finn wasn't going anywhere, and he was stable enough. They left Finn with a kiss on his forehead and a promise they'd bring Fao up to see him. They popped in to see Steve; they knew Fao would ask.

The ward was quiet, though the nurses checked on Fao frequently. He couldn’t settle, too uncomfortable. The anxiety was building as well. He knew both of the others who he’d been in the building with were in ICU, in the back of his mind he was worried he’d deteriorate to that point, too. He just wanted to go home, but he realised things were fairly serious.

Knocking quietly on Fao’s door, Fred pushed it open. "Hey, kid."

He looked up, and managed a smile. “Dad. I thought you weren’t coming.”

"Course we were." He headed in, straight for a hug. "I'm so glad you're alright. But if you do that shit again…I think I'll end up in hospital."

Fao hugged him back, reaching up to wrap his arms around him. “In my defence, I was actually trying to be the sensible one for once.”

"I know, I know." He held on a moment too long, Fao' calling him dad hitting harder than he'd expected. 

“How are Finn and Steve? They said ICU to me.”

"Yeah, they're both ICU. Steve's awake, but Finn’s…Finn’s been intubated because of the shift."

“Oh.”

"It's just a precaution with Finn, they couldn't get the assessments done they needed, so they didn't have a choice. They're gonna be okay though."

“Hopefully.”

"They will, and you will be too."

“I feel like shit.” He admitted.

"I bet. Pain? Or just everything?"

“Everything. My chest mostly.”

"Have they given you something for it?"

“Yeah. I’ve had a bit, it’s jus’ crappy.”

"Hopefully you won't need much more."

“Hopefully.” He was quiet for a moment. “I don’t want to end up in ICU.”

"It's not in the plans for you."

“I know. But it’s in the back of my mind, y’know?”

"I know."

“Glad you’re here, though.” He said softly. 

“Of course I’m here. I meant it, though. Do this again and I think me and She will actually kill you. Or you’ll kill us off.”

“I’ll try not to.” Fao said weakly. “Am I able to see Finn? Steve, too?”

“Your Mum’s just trying to charm the nurses into letting you up there. Might have to jump through a few hoops, and behave yourself, though. Just warning you now.”

“I’ll do anything.” 

“Careful, now. Don’t say anything.”

think about the possibility of whumpee being intubated.

it’s uncomfortable. it’s scary. they can’t make any vocal sounds at all, not even ones of pain. they’re probably under the influence of some pretty heavy meds so they’re woozy if not outright unconscious.

think of how horrifying it is for caretaker, too. seeing whumpee in this state — a tube coming out their mouth, and the clicking and whooshing of the ventilator.

also, having the tube taken out isn’t something quick and easy. the doctors first have to gradually turn off the ventilator to see if whumpee can even breathe on their own. this can take hours. so whumpee has to be breathing manually while there’s a tube down their throat. then the actual process of extubation is uncomfortable in and of itself, and it carries the risk of complications such as permanently damaging whumpee’s vocal cords. plus it will be painful for them to talk for a while.

i just think there are a lot of opportunities for hurt/comfort there.

It leaves me weak when the whumpee is conscious but unresponsive 👌. Like for example if the caretaker asks the whumpee if they can hear them and they just don't respond

Oh God YES! That is such a good trope!!! So many ways you can take it too. Are they poisoned? Too weak to speak or move? Are they intubated? Is someone stopping them from responding? Is it the emotional trauma paralyzing them? All good!!

what is the difference between 'under anaesthesia' and 'sedated'?

Good question!

Of course all the prompts are up to your own interpretation of them, but when I was creating them I had this in mind:

'Under anesthesia' refers to the whumpee being anaesthetised for a surgery/any situation in which the medications they're on are so potent that they require breathing aids e.g intubation. (If we wanted to get technical, the term anesthesia describes the use of medicines to prevent pain/paralyse, hence why whumpee would be unable to breathe on their own- it literally paralyses their respiratory system).

'Sedated', on the other hand, refers to the use of sedative medications to knock the whumpee out, but not reduce pain/paralyse. Instead, they just make whumpee incredibly drowsy and calm. Think the way hospitals use certain medications to sedate somebody when they're trying to relocate a dislocated shoulder, for instance. The person isn't totally anaesthetised, but they're under the effect of drugs to keep them sleepy and calm.

noncon, med whump, noncon drugging, medical restraints, whipping, relief after prolonged suffering, lab/experiment whump, dehumanization (whumper wearing gloves and talking about the whumpee like they're not right there kind of dehumanization, not so much turning whumpee into dog dehumanization), forced to watch, tube feeding/intubation/etc (loss of autonomy over basic bodily functions).

2. Do you prefer illness whump or injury whump?

It's like choosing between my children. Gun to my head, I'll say injury whump, but I fucking love both (I LOVE sickfic and caretaking sick whumpees) and if you can fenangle a world where they happen simultaneously, it is a world I want to live in.

17. When was the last time you got the whumperflies?

my head/imagination is a constant source of whumperflies, during waking hours I'd say at least 70% of the time I'm thinking about characters in generally whumpy scenarios. Doing this AFTG reread one of the guys just got absolutely wrecked and while his scene didn't give me 'whumperflies' thinking about the scenes that happened after that weren't on page did.

Truly though I think being so deep in the tumblr whump community has made it hard for me to parse apart things that I used to easily be able to identify, like what hits the spot for me for whump in media. Maybe reading the sunshine court last week, but even still, it's usually in my imagination, the scenes that I expand upon, that hit perfectly on my brand of whump.

This is a lab whump brain rot post. Have some ideas.

Whumpee only ever sees whumper when they are wearing a surgical gown, cap, gloves, and masks. When they escape, they have no idea what whumper looks like.

Blood soaked onto sterile drapes, sprayed onto the ceiling, splattered across whumper’s mask, pooled on the floor of the operating room.

Surgeon Whumper and Anesthesiologist Caretaker trying their best with limited access to painkillers and anesthetics.

Gloved hands palpating and pressing on whumpee’s bare skin, examining every inch.

Whumper complimenting whumpee innards during a surgery.

Whumpee gets sick/injured and whumper becomes obsessed with getting them better.

Whumper giving whumpee a daily questionnaire as the experiment progresses, watching as they slowly start to climb up the pain scale.

Half conscious during surgery, whumpee hears squishing and squelching until a finally, sickening, crunch.

Whumper showing whumpee each of their operating tools, and explaining what they do and how they’ll be used. Needles, scalpels, clamps, rib cutters, organized neatly on sterile trays.

Whumper paralyzes and intubates whumpee. They do not get anesthetics, and are awake the whole time.

Caretaker has to operate on whumpee again to fix the damage whumper caused. Whumpee is very surprised by the pain medication, and the anesthesia, and asking for permission before touching them.

Sickness Prompts

I’m sick at the moment, and I keep forgetting that even a mild sickness can be deeply unpleasant. So in honour of this, here are a few ways to make your whumpee miserable!

I was going to do a few grosser prompts e.g. emeto, but wasn’t able to place a cut that far down the post, so those won’t feature.

Not feeling especially feverish, but not being able to thermoregulate as well as usual either. Alternating between too cold (pulling on sweaters and blankets) and then too hot (ripping them all off again).

Loss of appetite. Throat infections especially can make the idea of eating unpleasant. Maybe their sickness diet consists entirely of ice cream and popsicles, which doesn’t help them feel better. Maybe Caretaker, insisting they need vitamins, brings them a bag of frozen berries instead.

That lack of food weakening an already weakened whumpee. Even though it’s only a mild sickness, Caretaker worries about them. If they have the technology, perhaps the whumpee gets intubated or put on an IV.

Brain fog from a headache.

Is your whumpee clingy when they’re sick, or do they curl away like a wounded prey animal and refuse to let anyone near them?

Caretaker comes down with whatever Whumpee has, and has to try and care for them regardless.

Some great whump potential in Whumpee losing their voice, especially if Whumper always kept them gagged / made them feel powerless. Could be an interesting concept to explore for certain non-humans, e.g. sirens.

Whumpee is gagged… and congested. They desperately try to warn Whumper they might be about to suffocate. Does Whumper not care, not listen, or simply not understand the muffled pleas?

Shallow, repetitive fever dreams that feel more like waking nightmares.

Fainting at the top of the stairs, or on the other side of a locked door.

Just. Sickness things.

So glad I am not the only going completely feral over the next 911 episode 🤣🤣 I love reading the tags on my latest 911 gifset. We're all dying.

It's like my perfect whump episode scenario if I'm honest. Whumpee is severely injured due to an accident/environmental situation, team stunned and nearly unable to help them, incredibly worried teammates, cpr needed, ambulance ride, hospital stay, intubation, team sitting by whumpees bedside, actually seeing the team worried and freaking out. I was so mad we didn't see worried team in the hospital after Bucks leg was crushed in 2x18. Though the rescue scene is my favorite scene in the whole show. Possibly my favorite scene ever or at least top 5.

So yeah, if there's also actual fallout in the next few episode it may just kill me. If we see Buck waking up confused and having memory issues (or even better, having memory issues for the rest of the season) or having headaches, muscle pain, hearing issues etc. Overprotective 118 fam. Bobby being a panicky dad. Any of that and I will die I will DIE.

I cannot wait til Monday. I cannot wait to see what the actual episode brings! I am very excited!
