When do girls fall behind in maths? Gigantic study pinpoints the moment
Around the world, teenage boys outperform girls on mathematics tests, and men are more likely to pursue related careers — despite baby boys showing no superior sense of numbers or grasp of logic. Now, a gigantic study of schoolchildren in France pinpoints that this ‘mathematical gender gap’ appears during the first year of school. The finding could help to focus efforts to stop girls from falling…

It's so funny to me that people think of Math/Mathematicians as being hyper-logical and rational. Like, have you seen some of the wild things hiding in the Math?
Did you know there are non-computable numbers?? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaitin%27s_constant)
Did you know that there are things that are true, but we can't prove them??? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G%C3%B6del%27s_incompleteness_theorems)
Did you know that we can prove that something exists, and yet never actually figure out what that thing is?? (https://mathworld.wolfram.com/NonconstructiveProof.html)
Math is crazy. Math is wild. Math hardly makes sense, and when you think you understand the weirdest parts of it, everyone who hears you explain it to thinks you're a gibbering lunatic.
"In mathematics you don’t understand things. You just get used to them." - von Neumann
(please share more unhinged math with me, i want to see more scary math)

decided to take the layton sona thing a little seriously lol
lots of fun trying to see how id be in this time period while also trying to add character. favorite part of making "sonas" isjust seeing how well of a plot you cuold make while still keeping yourself visible.
vv is an alt of like the antagonist thing idk
ouuugh i love being cringe but free...i have a steampunk rabbit hat and phantom of the opera esc mask n i thought it'd look cool in a villain design
idk ,,maybe something something to be an antagonist this character would've fallen into their own creation in an attempt to reach some goal n is now just evil and mean and angry.havent fleshed it out but its fun to draw. kinda wanna make a friend make a sona/find someone else's to draw them as homies lol
#as corny as this was it was very fun#didnt know what time period this game takes place in#so i swapped computer science with mathematics#afraid of being found cringe hopefully irls never see this#professor layton#professor layton oc#sona

(Semi-regularly updated) list of resources for (not only) young mathematicians interested in logic and all things related:
Igor Oliveira's survey article on the main results from complexity theory and bounded arithmetic is a good starting point if you're interested in these topics.
The Complexity Zoo for information on complexity classes.
The Proof Complexity Zoo for information on proof systems and relationships between them.
Computational Complexity blog for opinions and interesting blog posts about computational complexity and bunch of other stuff.
Student logic seminar's home page for worksheets on proof complexity, bounded arithmetic and forcing with random variables (great introduction for beginners).
Eitetsu Ken's list for resources on proof complexity, computational complexity, logic, graph theory, finite model theory, combinatorial game theory and type theory.
Jan Krajíček's page is full of old teaching materials and resources for students (click past teaching) concernig logic, model theory and bounded arithmetic. I also recommend checking out his books. They are basically the equivalent of a bible for this stuff, although they are a bit difficult to read.
I also recommend the page of Sam Buss, there are downloadable versions of most of his articles and books and archive of old courses including resources on logic, set theory and some misc computer science. I especially recommend his chapters in Hnadbook of Proof Theory.
Amir Akbar Tabatabai's page for materials on topos theory and categories including lecture notes and recordings of lectures.
Andrej Bauer's article "Five stages of accepting constructive mathematics" for a funny and well-written introduction into constructive mathematics.
Lean Game Server for learning the proof assistant Lean by playing fun games.

Going to go on a little rant but my god I'm sick of how undervalued maths is. I hate that for the past 10 years, including primary school, whenever I tell people I like maths I get asked if I'm insane. I hate that in a country that has made major contributions to maths, there's barely any effort to keep up that history and support new mathematicians.
I hate that I can't criticise people who also do stem that go on and on about how everything relating to maths is stupid and useless because "that's just how they feel"...Even when they're doing computer science. And said computer scientists complain every. Single. Time. When a maths equation appears.
I hate that I can't point out how it's weird how people demonize mathematics itself instead of how it's taught, which is where the problem usually lies. I hate that I'm expected to drop mathematics entirely to go into a "proper" job like programming instead of research into population models and simulations. I hate how maths is being co-opted by people making points about "how simple the world is" when maths is nothing like they portray it to be. I hate that maths is seen as a field only of white, cishet men when there's been so many women, poc and queer people that have done groundbreaking work.
I hate that we're in a world where mathematics is so important to everyday life, and yet the idea of actually studying maths and continuing research into it is frowned upon.
#feeling things today don't mind me#I'm not saying people can't like maths#we're just no where near “done” with mathematics research and pretending we are and limiting people's access is going to bite us#stem#mathematics#maths#mathblr#half the arguments I see just come down to the way schools teach maths across the world which is fair except for the fact it goes with ever#subject and not just maths#anyway I wrote this instead of computing a FS lmao#also I'm a applied maths/cs major that's why i including the bit about cs students because oh my god they hate me for not hating maths#daimian.txt

AAAAAAHHHH I HAVE A MATH TEST TMRW
Normally, I’m not so stressed, but I missed class this week (I was skipping shame on me 😭) and I have no clue what’s going on… Me and the math teacher are besties because he’s the coach of the golf team, so I’m scared of disappointing him with my bad test scores.
I also had a long lab in chem this week. It’s really sad because we got bad results even though we ran our trial for over and hour lol. I think it’s my lab partner’s fault because he keeps on putting his crusty fingers all over the cuvettes which is messing up the spectrophotometer. Hopefully he actually writes his part so it’s not another repeat of last year.
- Practice midterms for matrices
- Grade practice midterms
- Write lab report
- Debug binary system simulation
- Work on astro research paper
- Work on program applications
- Finish new deal research
- Finish college assessment
- Email people back 😬
Don’t ask me why we have a midterm in January… I have no clue.

i need more mutuals who are into coding and engineering!! more info under the cut!!
I planned to become an electrical engineer like my stepdad but then I decided to change my path to programming. I'm currently studying at technikum (<- wikipedia link so I don't have to explain the whole polish learning system), programmer major.
this year I have exams from web development (10th Jan - theory, 16th Jan - practical exams) and next year I have exams from App development (both mobile and desktop).
I know C family languages, Java, Python and those ones I am currently using. I also know a bit of Kotlin and I think I will continue learning it.
For web dev I know HTML and CSS ofc but also PHP and JS.
Planning on learning more languages I can use for App and operating system development as well as just to know them cause I want to after this year's exams!
my learning list:
Lua (I heard it's easy but I can't really get myself to read anything about this atm idk why)
Ruby
Assembly
Rust
As for electrical engineering I don't know much tbh but I would like to learn! I just used CAD programs for technical drawings (dad taught me some basic things when I was still thinking about going his path) helped my dad fix things on his Solar farm, houses of our neighbors and I made a few very simple circuits for fun a few years ago. Now I'm mostly focused on programming but since I learned most of the things I need for exams I have more time to do whatever I want now!
I'd like to get to know more people so I can share and mostly learn new things since even though I'm coding for years I consider myself a beginner and I am a total beginner when it comes to electrical engineering.
I'm willing to be friends or at least mutuals with anyone who codes or makes websites or is in STEM! no matter what your specialty/interest is exactly and no matter if you are a total beginner or a professional ^__^
I'd also like to have some mutuals who are into old web development and retro computing!!!!!!!!
edit: I forgot but I'm also interested in physics and quantum physics

huge study prompts urgent call to action
You have full access to this article via your institution. Teachers have a crucial role in closing the gender gap in maths.Credit: Sergey Maximishin/Panos Pictures ‘Boys are better at maths’. It’s a stereotype that’s still pervasive among many children, teachers and parents. But is there any truth to it? A study of millions of schoolchildren in France reveals that boys pull ahead of girls in…

Is it possible to deduce the shape of a drum from the sounds it makes? This is the kind of question that Iosif Polterovich, a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Université de Montréal, likes to ask. Polterovich uses spectral geometry, a branch of mathematics, to understand physical phenomena involving wave propagation. Last summer, Polterovich and his international collaborators—Nikolay Filonov, Michael Levitin and David Sher—proved a special case of a famous conjecture in spectral geometry formulated in 1954 by the eminent Hungarian-American mathematician George Pólya. The conjecture bears on the estimation of the frequencies of a round drum or, in mathematical terms, the eigenvalues of a disk.
