as a mexican i can’t help but laugh at how wrong some americans writing mexican characters get the way our name system works so lemme explain so you can get it right!
so most mexicans (remarking MOST because i do mean 99% of us) have TWO last names that come from our parents. it's basically like this:
name / paternal last name (dad's first last name) / maternal last name (mum's first last name).
the first last name is ALWAYS the paternal last name, it always comes from the dad side of the family. there are some exceptions though. in 3 states of the country it's already legal to put the maternal last name first but it's very rare and usually only in special cases, like when the father is absent for example.
there are also cases where the person has only one last name but this is not only extremely rare but it can cause a lot of hardships with legal documentation like school, banks, etc. this can happen for some reasons:
1- they're the child of a single parent (however, to avoid the difficulties that come with having one single last name some end up being registered with the same last names as the parent, but inverted)
2- they were registered in another country where they only have one last name (for example USA, a friend of mine was registered there and for that reason they only have one last name in their documents)
it's important to mention that unlike american last names, the two last names are not separated by “-” they're only separated by a space.
the last names are not necessarily one word, some have two or three. for example last names like “de la rosa” or “del olmo”
also, there's no such thing as married name here. women don't change their last names nor mix them with their husbands last names.
as i am aware, last names tend to work like this in all latin america but many specific details may be different depending on the country and i am not that well informed.
either way, i hope this helps anyone who’s developing a mexican character!

Representation fucking matters.
Before watching the new Black Panther movie I really didn’t feel the need for it. Ofc I got why people wanted to be seen in big screens and different platforms but never really felt identified with the feeling people described. (I’m a member of the lgbt community as well but since I grew up on a very open household with a loving family that opened that part of the culture to me it was never a big thing).
Today that changed when I saw brown people on screen. I saw people who look like me and my friends and the ones I see on the streets everyday. I’m a Mexican woman, born and raised in Mexico and getting to see such a beautiful representation of my culture and people warmed my heart and made me feel exactly what minorities who were overshadowed by western media describe.
They even included Mayan legends on it, which I’ve always found absolutely beautiful. I live near some ruins (Teotihuacán, look it up) and it’s quite beautiful to see elements I saw on field trips and history classes represented on a movie. And not just any movie, a marvel movie. I grew up with them and seeing my culture developing in the same universe was just mesmerizing.
If you read this all the way, thank you. Means the world <3

miguel x mexican/black fem! reader
fluff/silly hcs
favorite thing to do together is talk shit/gossip in spanish knowing damn well that the people you’re talking about wouldn’t understand a damn thing in spanish LOL
spanish endearment words! miguel loves to refer to you as “querida, corazón, muñeca (sometimes), mi sol, mi vida, mi alma, mujercita” while you refer to him as “guapo, mi amor, cariño, hombre,”
he loves the way you say his name. it’s like a lullaby to his ears. i think he loves your accent and the way you accentuate his name with love.
he’s surprisingly good at braiding your way when you make him braid your hair before going to bed. well, you sometimes forget that he used to braid his daughter hair a lot…☹️
miguel loves it when you rant to him about anything quite literally anything. whether is about some person you don’t like or a new hyperfixation he will be all ears.
you purposely piss him off…you love when men get mad…you find it funny when miguel is annoyed with you BUT he doesn’t get extremely mad at you. you push it because you wanna see if he would actually get mad at you but surprisingly enough he doesn’t! just annoyed, “stop being annoying y/n.” he says it with a smirk but his voice is dripping with annoyance.
he learned your whole hair care routine. he payed attention when it was your hair wash day. he secretly loves to watch you wash you hair and take note of the different hair products that vest suits your type of hair whether it’s afro, curly, textured, thick you name it.
that’s why when one day you asked him if he could wash your hair, he happily obliged and you were so surprised he knew which products where which and in the specific order that you used them. HE LIKES TO GIVE UU SCALP MASSAGES 💆🏽‍♀️ sometimes you’d end up falling asleep on the sink and he’d wake you up, “okay mi vida, your nap time is over.” he’d make fun of you for falling asleep HAHA
miguel loves loves loves it so much whenever you where long acrylic nails 💅🏽 it’s just something about the way they make your hands adorned and pretty. he’s always grabbing your hands and just awestruck by the artwork done on your nails <3
suggestive: when miguel and you were making out and in the heat of the moment, he hadn’t realized that his claws came out and they were digging into your hips + his fangs were more prominent which grazed against your lips. you jolted from the sharp pain of his claws digging into your skin and he felt really bad. “i’m so sorry, i didn’t mean to.” he apologized profusely throughout the day after that because he would never hurt you. of course you told him you didn’t mind it one bit, and that you kinda liked it which left miguel was dumbstruck by it 😭
“please please please!! i wanna see your fangs oh my god, please please please.” you begging him to show you his fangs and he would be reluctant to, “what? no, not here.” obviously he gave in and you we’re literally literally so intrigued by his fangs. you were awestruck and he kind of blushed because of that.
he was invited to your family’s cookout 😭 the black side of your family definitely had fun with him, showing him the good stuff. he fell in love with the food and he could not get enough of your grandma’s cooking. not him dancing to cupid shuffle with your uncles, aunts, and cousins 😭
now of course, your mexican side of the family would invite him to go to trips to mexico with all of you. you can say it was the most chaotic experience in your life BUT SO MUCH FUN!
miguel bonded really well and was fully accepted on both sides of your family. your mom almost fainted when you brought miguel to your house because it’s the first time you bring a good man. your mom knew you had terrible taste in men but when you brought miguel, lord. she was like “¡¡estoy tan feliz de tu novio!! siempre traes hombres feos a mi casa!!” while your dad was just happy you got a good man, finally. “nice to meet you, miguel. i’m sure you’ll make my daughter happy.” miguel happily nodded, “of course, your daughter’s happiness and well-being is my first priority.”
he takes you out on dates a lot…he plans them more than you do, and he always bringing you flowers with every visit. got you a promise ring and vowed to marry you one day (he’s a man of his words) it took him time to figure out his feelings but he did it!
he always encourages to reach for your goals and dream & promises to be by your side through it all, and you promised him you’d help him overcome his past traumas which really made him soft. he always cried when you said :(
lyla loves you!! she exposes his secrets or confessions he had about you, out loud…he gets super embarrassed and red about it, and you just tease him about it. one time it was something suggestive…he literally had to disconnect lyla for A WHILE LMFAO it was awkward as fuck 😭 “miguel um—wow i didn’t know you had that in you..” he looked down at the floor than at you with an embarrassed face gawd did he want to disappear. “well yeah…” he chuckled nervously as he rubbed the back of his neck.
a/n: if this gets enough reach i’ll make a pt. 2

I want to go on a rant about Mexican representation and I am. (I did this once I cooled down, but it'll probably get heated later on)
So, here's the deal, representation, it's fine, no? It's cool, it's great, it's amazing. It's something everyone wants. To be able to see someone like him in the big screens. So why, if everyone's screaming for representation of all kinds, the representation we are given is either equal to none or really bad?
Now, I'm not saying this in a mean way (I kinda am) but, it's annoying. It really is. The Mexican characters that we have are bad. Like really bad. And hey, I should he glad there even is. Even just, latino American in general.
Look at the MCU, there's Asian main characters, there's black main characters, there's white main characters obviously, there's even European main characters I believe. And they're well represented. But I haven't seen one Mexican main character that you look at them and you tell yourself as a Mexican, they're like me. Okay, there's America Chavez and Miguel O'Hara. But have you seen them? Have you seen how they're written?
My main rant here is about Miguel. In one of the most well written movies, in one of the most representative movies, in one of the best animated movies or our generation, the one Mexican character is written like an animal. Like a deranged man that's pursuing a kid because he doesn't like him. And that's the way he is perceived.
Yet every single other character in there, is well represented and well written. Every black people in that movie has a personality that makes you see them as black. Hobie? He's got a reason to be like he is, and that has to see with him being black, and he has a bottom, a personality. Miles? I'm not even gonna say it, he's the main character. Jessica? She's written as what she is. Spider byte? She's written as a black woman, in the little time she's shown. But Miguel? He's written as an animal. As a bottomless dehumanized animal.
He's the only Mexican guy we get and part of the little Latino characters we get. And he's written like a fucking animal. He's not written like a villain with a reason to be. He's written as a persecutor that does this because he feels like it. The worst part is that he's got a reason. But it's shown for so little time and so overlooked that it just, doesn't matter. And I'm not saying he's right, far from it, there's other ways to go about what he's trying to do. But to him, this things have a meaning. Yet everyone overlooks it to go for the fact that he's attacking a child. And why? Because he's shown as an animal.
And don't come to me with the "oh but he's half spider". And? So are the other spidermans and they're not written as a beast. They're not dehumanized to the point where all that you see when you look at that character is the way he is agressive.
He's lost his daughter, twice, and to a mistake he made. He took his daughter's life because he wanted her back, yet no one, no one, is taking a look at that. No one is caring about his reason, only about what he did. Yet to every other MCU villain, that have got a good reason, (like Loki, Namor, who's very well written, red skull, etc) people look at it. People think about it. And we're being reminded of it.
But in every piece of media I see about Miguel that isn't some horny piece of fanfiction, (no offense) the only thing people keep bringing back is his hatred for miles. His aggressiveness. To Gwen too. And the worst part is that I don't blame the people that consume or create that media. I Blake the writers of the movie.
It's extremely well written. A masterpiece from the eyes of an artist and a writer. But Miguel? His writing feels so lazy, so not there. Not even Peter's feels bad, he just feels neglectful. Miguel's writing, as one of the main villains of the movie is soo... Plain. To me, every other character has depth except him. And it bothers me.
Now, moving on onto any other well consumed movie. Mexicans are either extremely stereotyped, or represented as something related to drug. And that's all. I haven't seen one "normal" Mexican character.
Not even America Chavez, she's written as a white girl, and it feels to me. She's meant to be Mexican but there's no effort put into it. There's no effort put into writing actually good Mexican characters in American media. And don't get me started on French media. And the worst part is that these people aren't like that in the comics. They're well written there, represented as what they are!
I mean, if DC can do it with blue beetle, (a very well written Mexican movie. Just in the cultural aspect, I'm not going to judge the movie in itself) then marvel can surely do it with anyone else. Like, put some effort into it, please. It's the same effort you put into written good black and Asian characters. Write good latino characters, please.
It's not that hard. It really isn't. If fanfiction authors can write better foreign characters than a professional, it means they're capable of doing it. And it means there's a problem there. And it hurts, because I'm not even asking you to write about something controversial, or about a woman. I'm asking you to put some effort into a typical male character and nor write it as a beast or a white guy. You can do it and I know it. And if you can't? Find someone that can or just, don't then. Because I'd rather not being represented than for people to think every one of us is like that. And agressive, drug related, brown man.
Another example I have is Percy Jackson. They made the effort of turning typically represented white gods, Greek gods, into a black god. And a white character into a black character. And then there's groover, that I don't remember if he was brown, but it fits. There's almost every community in there. Yet, no latino character. Not even in the background. Like, if you're gonna make a Greek god black for representation, you can do it for other minorities. Anyone. Not just Percy Jackson.
And again, I'm not even asking to write or represented queer or genderqueer people, you won't loose money from making a well written latino character.
Because then, it bleeds into society, and when I moved to my current country, I lived for seven years with the racism of being a foreign person in a country that consumes American media and doesn't know much about us, other than we're criminals and eat tacos in a basis and are some kind of witch or weird person. And for someone as young as little me, and as different as little me, it just hurts that you're discriminated for something so normal as to where you were born. Because the only thing they know about my country is the bad representation media chose to do. Like they did with black people. And now it's changed, so why can't it for us to?
So yeah, it makes me mad to not be able to see someone like me without thinking, why the others get a well written deep character and I get some kind of beast that hurts children with an overlooked reason. Because the movie chose to overlook it. Because the people chose to overlook it.
I want to clarify, my views in this are mostly oriented on the MCU and Sony's spider verse movies.

We all agree that Knuckles is black coded. We all see it, we are all aware of this fact, it's something that a big part of the community agrees on and cares about, because, you know, representation's important and all that. However, even if I completely agree with this statement, I feel like a lot of people are ignoring another important fact about this character.
I feel like a lot of the times, when this topic about Knuckles comes up, people either ignore or flat out just forget the fact that Knuckles and his culture take a lot of inspiration from Mesoamerican cultures, specifically from Central and South América.
It's not much in his appearence, but mostly in his background as a character. We all know Knuckles comes from the Echidna Tribe, and Echidna culture takes a lot from latinamerican culture.
For starters, this is the Echidna Tribe in different Sonic media.
Tumblr media
And these are Azteca and Maya representations.
Tumblr media
You see the resemblance, right? And it's not just a coincidence. The developers of Sonic Adventure visited Central and South América during the development of the game to study the culture and create the Echidna Tribe!
Second point, this is Tikal.
Tumblr media
And this is also Tikal, in Guatemala.
Tumblr media
They literally named her after a Maya temple!
The same case here. This is Pachacamac.
Tumblr media
And this is also Pachacamac, a peruvian sanctuary.
Tumblr media
Another echidna named after a latinamerican temple.
Third point, this is Mystic Ruins, from Sonic Adventure.
Tumblr media
And these are Aztec and Mayan temples.
Tumblr media
Fourth, just this:
Tumblr media
So yeah. I absolutely agree that more people should be made aware of the fact that Knuckles' black coded, but I wish more people were also aware of the importance that Mesoamerican cultures have on not only Knuckles but also his background and the environment he comes from. Being latinamerican myself, it really bums me out to see my culture and others' being erased and mocked (because you have no idea how many racist fanart I found of both Knuckles and Tikal when searching for the photos I used above).
That's all I have to say, I'm probably just rambling, but I really wish this came up more in conversation, because it's important to me and I believe it also is for other latinamerican people, and I really would love to see this part of such a popular character being recognized more often.

Sometimes I wanna draw and then I realise I can't draw
Anyway. WIP! I feel like this'll be fun if I keep going but I have a tendency to lose all motivation if I leave it so I usually do things in one shot. However, I need to go to bed.
Tumblr media
I feel like this is a lot of research that people will never see unless they themselves are Mexican but one of the reasons I make/draw things like this is so people feel seen. I looked over a couple things for this, quite fun! This is supposed to be a chiapaneca dress, but I am not used to this more "realistic" style so the dress actually needs to spread out more. It's so pretty though! Will either be very fun or very torturous to colour
This is Paloma! I haven't started on her wings and at this point I'm not sure how to add them in. She's Mexican and was a fashion designer. I'm using that as an excuse to continue putting eyeliner on Alexis, who she is friends (?) with. She's older than him.
I have seen somewhere that Spanish Spanish and Mexican Spanish are slightly different, the two should still be able to communicate. I don't know what you call a "big sister/miss" in Spanish, or if that's even something you do. I guess Senorita would be it? I'm trying to convey that Alexis is showing respect to her though, so that feels like it's not it.
I'm debating between wing styles also. I think colourful wings (Like a parrot) would be pretty, and not as common as dove wings (Which are her namesake). Also it was while I was looking those up that I found out the Mexican flag has an eagle on it! The golden eagle wings sound pretty interesting, if a little bit drab, but having her be tied to the national bird would be fun I think. And lastly, wood pigeon wings, which are also her namesake, only in Latin.

every time I hear about the oye primos trailer that came out i actually lose my mind, simply because it was so much easier just not to be stereotypical towards Latinos and latinas but they just had to put the breaking bad yellow filter on it, didn't they. they named two of the characters nacho. the place where they live is called terremoto heights. the name of the show is grammatically incorrect.
regardless of the creator's nationality, disrespecting other groups like this and then arguing that there is no better representation out there reeks of bullshit to me
(good vidya that explains the whole thing better than me: https://youtu.be/qH3wPQRwyhs)
