3 out of 5 stars
Meesh is a young demon living at Mount Magma who is "bad" at being a demon. She is bullied for liking fairies and talking to flowers. She even gets pushed down a hill by the school bullies and gets hurt. Then, the story takes a turn where she sees someone playing with the lava pool and then they get turned into stone. Soon enough, the whole town seems to be turned into stone!
Meesh decides that the place to go is the fairy city, where her favorite TV hero lives, to plead for help. Of course, she has to hide that she's a demon because the fairies have decided that demons aren't good. Can Meesh change their mind and help save her town?
The pacing of the graphic novel at certain points was very weird. I honestly thought I'd missed a few pages because the pacing was so off.
Overall, I can see that it's a cute graphic novel about tossing aside stereotypes and blossoming friendships.

Ayo, someone by the name of Curly-B-Blog is redlining art of yours from 2020 (while pretending that it's actually Sai Scribble's work), and kind of being a dick about it. just thought you should know.
You know, originally I was just gonna brush it off, but then I went back to look at my old SU art from 2020 and did so much self reflection from then till now.
I think this was around the time I was just learning how to do perspective and tried to use the perspective tool on Procreate for the first time? :0 and I remember telling Sai “Sai I have this STUPID idea, I CANT believe it this stupid joke it’s so DUMBBBB, it’s living rent free in my BRAIN I SWEAR THIS IS GONNA BE SO STUPID DCIUWHEFIUWHIRFUIW4F” and being super excited to show her the finished product. People still think Sai created the Cursed Skin Gloves comic and I think it’s hilarious wjhwnuhwijwuiw
Tumblr media
The comic was received very well and it made LOTS of people laugh and I’m still proud of this comic to this very day! :D and tbh if it wasn’t for my obsession for Sai’s Switcheroo AU I never would have found my passion in comic work! (love you you stinky hoe @saiscribbles 🩷)
Tumblr media
HOWEVER…. I definitely still had lots to learn! I wasn’t very good at perspective at the time I’ll admit, but I was definitely having lots of fun learning :3
And throughout the past 4 years, ALOT has happened.
I graduated from college with TWO fancy pieces of expensive papers in Visual Development in Animation and Illustration learning from Will Kim and Jeff Soto, and as a I was working with the funny voice man Cougar MacDowall as a comic/story artist and reached in total around 7 million views for my fan series FNAF Security Malware Breached (it was even #21 on the trending list around the time of my birthday 🩷 what a lovely gift), had an insane opportunity to work with Mike Geno and with the voice cast from The Amazing Digital Circus for a fan song as a background and character asset artist, Vivienne Medrano liking and sharing my silly Overlord Husk AU comics, currently on my route to getting my certificate from Aaron Blaise’s Character design program and graduating from Marc Brunet Art School, and now I am completing my first year as professional colorist and art assistant for my storyboard and comic mentor Michelle Lam, aka Mewtripled! (Also I’ll be heading out to Lightbox Expo 2024 on October 26 with Michelle and the team so if y’all ever wanna meetup hahahajaj wink wink wink wink wink)
So you can say I learned ALOT and I enjoyed every minute of what I do :D I try to be humble about my accomplishments because blah blah being humble good yes yes but this time I wanna be selfish and say HELL YEAH I DID ALL THIS!!! AND IM SO EXTREMELY PROUD OF MYSELF FIUGEIURGERGGRS
Now here’s my most recent comic page that I posted like 2 days ago without the text.
Tumblr media
That’s pretty freakin wild to me, I can’t believe I used to draw Steven Universe art like that back in 2020 LOL LIKE GUYS I DREW THIS!! WITH!!! MY HANDS!!! IS THAT NOT INSANE!!!???
Anyways moral of the story:
Learn from everyone and everything! Yes, even then mean ones too! If you can learn to work with anyone, I promise you’ll get to where you want to be faster. People can be a little mean on the internet, but that shouldn’t stop you from being where you want to be in the future. I’m so EXTREMELY grateful for all the opportunities and to all the kind professionals who were willing to give me a chance. Seriously, I’m so graciously thankful for everything, and I hope everyone here will support me and my silly little comics I will do now and in the future!
And one more thing:
Don’t be a jerk. Be to be nice to everyone :D nothing good comes out when you’re bad to everyone.

Oh, huh! I hadn't seen Michelle's interview quote at all; 'til you posted it now, I'd assumed she'd hinted at the *overall* ending being bittersweet (as I'd only seen social media talk about it). Looking at her statement... I recall a lot of the speculation during s1/s2 honing in on the possibility of Omega ending up in one of Star Wars' live action shows, later down the line. Quite a few of us assumed TBB was doing double duty (acting as a Batch-focused cartoon *and* as setup for some nebulous future project) -- but it's very possible that plans along those lines changed, or never came to fruition. And now, as we're halfway through s3 and the plot seems geared up to barrel toward the finale, I'm inclined to agree with your speculation/analysis -- that interview quote sounds much less ominous, in context! (And the Batch may very well end up on the lam again; potentially deeply so, if there's no way to deal with Hemlock/Tantiss by the end of the series. Like Ventress said, they're not very well-hidden at the moment. Keeping Omega away from the Empire seems to necessitate either running/hiding or training/separation... and I know which option I'm rooting for, ahaha.)
It really doesn't help that some of the interviews chopped up her response and just said that she described the new ending as "Bittersweet" without actually putting it into the full quote. They kind of had what they wanted to say and picked out parts of the response in order to make it work.
I think that we'll likely resolve the central TBB narrative of the family reunification thing (because I doubt we'll go all this time just to NOT resolve that) and rescue the other clones from Tantiss, but a lot of the smaller things people want tied up like 'where's Cody' and 'what made Rex end up where he is in Rebels' will probably not get all tied up. I think there was some kind of assumption that TBB had to tie up EVERYTHING EVER but... there's lots of room in between TBB and Rebels, we have no need to stuff TBB full of extra things. It's going to focus on the batch and bring them at least to an emotional conclusion.

Meesh the Bad Demon by Michelle Lam. Alfred A. Knopf, 2023. 9780593372869. https://www.powells.com/book/-9780593372869?partnerid=34778&p_bt
Meesh lives with her grandmother in Mount Lava, and she loves watching the adventures of the fairy Princess Nouna on TV. At school she's frequently picked on and unsuccessful at the demon skills she's supposed to master, which include fire breathing, acid-puking, and lava-molding. It's so bad she doesn't want to be a demon at all. But when something goes wrong with the lava, and everyone turns to stone, it's up to Meesh to find help. She heads to Plumeria City to find Princess Nouna and her magic ruby but instead finds a city full of fairies who vilify demons and react poorly to Meesh having snuck in uninvited.
Meesh and Nouna end up on an adventure together, though, one that eventually involves the bully who picks on Meesh, a very charming young wolf, and a heist of sorts. Friendships are forged! Problems are solved. New magical powers are discovered. And a sequel is set up.
The book is beautiful, and elementary students in particular will love it.

Mr. Vampire (1985)
Okay, the little vampire in the 5th gif isn't from Mr. Vampire, but instead from one of the many sequels. The interaction between him and Lam Ching-ying's Master Kau (aka One-Eyebrow Priest) is just too cute. Plus, the little guy doesn't speak; he squeaks.
Mr. Vampire didn't invent the jianshi (Chinese hopping vampires) film genre, but it sure as heck popularized it. The series, and its many imitators (most of which starred Lam as well), was hugely successful. Lam was even acting in a television series based on Mr. Vampire when, tragically, he passed away from liver cancer.
Golden Harvest, the Chinese studio behind the Mr. Vampire series, attempted to remake the film for the American market under the title Demon Hunters, but ceased filming not long after production started.
Since then Michelle Yeoh's production company has teased that it wants to make its own American market remake. However, it's been over 20 years since they made that announcement, and now that Madame Yeoh is an Oscar ™ winner she's probably too busy to do it. However, a remake with her in Lam's role as the Taoist exorcist would be fantastic! Especially if she could leverage a reunion of her old Hong Kong buddies - Jackie Chan, Sammy Hung, Yuen Wan, Donnie Yen, et. al. - to appear in it as well.
A guy can dream, can't he?
In the meantime, if you've never seen Mr. Vampire or any of its sequels, you need to remedy that RIGHT NOW! They are loads of fun, and I think you'll really enjoy them.

Afro-Surrealism & Afrofuturism: Mood Board
Afro-Surrealism
Behold the invisible! You shall see unknown wonders!
1. We have seen these unknown worlds emerging in the works of Wifredo Lam, whose Afro-Cuban origins inspire works that speak of old gods with new faces, and in the works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, who gives us new gods with old faces. We have heard this world in the ebo-horn of Roscoe Mitchell and the lyrics of DOOM. We've read it through the words of Henry Dumas, Victor Lavalle, and Darius James. This emerging mosaic of radical influence ranges from Frantz Fanon to Jean Genet. Supernatural undertones of Reed and Zora Neale Hurston mix with the hardscrabble stylings of Chester Himes and William S. Burroughs.
2. Afro-Surreal presupposes that beyond this visible world, there is an invisible world striving to manifest, and it is our job to uncover it. Like the African Surrealists, Afro-Surrealists recognize that nature (including human nature) generates more surreal experiences than any other process could hope to produce.
3. Afro-Surrealists restore the cult of the past. We revisit old ways with new eyes. We appropriate 19th century slavery symbols like Kara Walker, and 18th century colonial ones like Yinka Shonibare. We re-introduce "madness" as visitations from the gods, and acknowledge the possibility of magic. We take up the obsessions of the ancients and kindle the dis-ease, clearing the murk of the collective unconsciousness as it manifests in these dreams called culture.
4. Afro-Surrealists use excess as the only legitimate means of subversion, and hybridization as a form of disobedience. The collages of Romare Bearden and Wangechi Mutu, the prose of Reed, and the music of the Art Ensemble of Chicago and Antipop Consortium express this overflow.
Afro-Surrealists distort reality for emotional impact. 50 Cent and his cold monotone and Walter Benjamin and his chilly shock tactics can kiss our ass. Enough! We want to feel something! We want to weep on record.
5. Afro-Surrealists strive for rococo: the beautiful, the sensuous, and the whimsical. We turn to Sun Ra, Toni Morrison, and Ghostface Killa. We look to Kehinde Wiley, whose observation about the black male body applies to all art and culture: "There is no objective image. And there is no way to objectively view the image itself."
6. The Afro-Surrealist life is fluid, filled with aliases and census- defying classifications. It has no address or phone number, no single discipline or calling. Afro-Surrealists are highly-paid short-term commodities (as opposed to poorly-paid long term ones, a.k.a. slaves).
Afro-Surrealists are ambiguous. "Am I black or white? Am I straight, or gay? Controversy!"
Afro-Surrealism rejects the quiet servitude that characterizes existing roles for African Americans, Asian Americans, Latinos, women and queer folk. Only through the mixing, melding, and cross-conversion of these supposed classifications can there be hope for liberation. Afro-Surrealism is intersexed, Afro-Asiatic, Afro-Cuban, mystic, silly, and profound.
7. The Afro-Surrealist wears a mask while reading Leopold Senghor.
8. Ambiguous as Prince, black as Fanon, literary as Reed, dandy as André Leon Tally, the Afro-Surrealist seeks definition in the absurdity of a "post-racial" world.
9. In fashion (John Galliano; Yohji Yamamoto) and the theater (Suzan Lori-Parks), Afro-Surreal excavates the remnants of this post-apocalypse with dandified flair, a smooth tongue and a heartless heart.
10. Afro-Surrealists create sensuous gods to hunt down beautiful collapsed icons.
