So I’ve begun the creation of a lil story, here are the characters then I’ll tell you about the story. (No it’s not in Gacha Life I just don’t wanna draw them)
Tumblr media
The story takes place in modern-day Britain, and surrounds a 14 year old boy named Oliver. He is in possession of a strange porcelain doll with beautiful reddish brown hair and a faded Victorian-era gown, as well as a fading silver tiara with diamonds. The doll first belonged to his mother, who then passed it down to Oliver’s younger sisters, who in turn gave it to him. The doll seems to be cursed or possessed, and has been scaring Oliver and his family. The story follows Oliver discovering more about the ghost inhabiting the doll, and forming a connection, and even a relationship, with it.
For now, the story is just in my head, but I want to turn it into a proper writing. I just need to figure out how…

Author Spotlight - Rien Gray
Rien Gray, author of Her Wolf in the Wild, brings a fascinating guest post about the history of lesbian mystery novels! Her Wolf in the Wild is a paranormal romance that our members are current reading.
Tumblr media
Like a lot of F/F readers, I struggled finding books with sapphic protagonists when I was younger, and held onto every book I could find like it was worth its weight in gold. So when I found out about the history of lesbian mystery novels, I was shocked to find out that hundreds of them had been published since the 1970s, often distributed through mailing services, magazines, and independent feminist presses like Naiad.
Also known as lesbian detective fiction, these books follow, you guessed it, lesbian detectives. Despite the name, plenty of characters in these novels are also bisexual or unlabeled but clearly attracted to women, and the gamut of the queer community tends to appear as the mysteries in question progress.
The genre appears to have started with A Reason to Kill by Eve Zaremba in 1978 with her middle-aged lesbian private investigator Helen Keremos. Mary Wings joined soon after with a butch protagonist named Emma Victor, a private eye. Nikki Baker became the first Black writer of lesbian mysteries with In the Game, a series that follows financial analyst and burgeoning sleuth Virginia Kelly. And there are dozens and dozens more.
Most of these authors wrote substantial series, following the same protagonists for years, taking their detectives through new jobs, heartbreaks, and self-discovery with each case. It’s worth noting that a lot of these characters are cops, but what I found interesting about that in the novels I read was how deeply the authors engaged with what that means when a protagonist is both queer and a member of law enforcement, and how often that clashed, especially in decades-old books where gay bars being raided was in recent memory.
If you want to know more about the genre, Megan Casey wrote The Lesbian Detective Novel, which features a database of every fitting writer and title the author could find, as well as several essays on the books in question.

Hart is a marshal, tasked with patrolling the strange and magical wilds of Tanria. It’s an unforgiving job, and Hart’s got nothing but time to ponder his loneliness. Mercy never has a moment to herself. She’s been single-handedly keeping Birdsall & Son Undertakers afloat in defiance of sullen jerks like Hart, who seems to have a gift for showing up right when her patience is thinnest. After yet another exasperating run-in with Mercy, Hart finds himself penning a letter addressed simply to “A Friend”. Much to his surprise, an anonymous letter comes back in return, and a tentative friendship is born. If only Hart knew he’s been baring his soul to the person who infuriates him most – Mercy. As the dangers from Tanria grow closer, so do the unlikely correspondents. But can their blossoming romance survive the fated discovery that their pen pals are their worst nightmares – each other?

'Powerless' (The Powerless Trilogy #1) - Lauren Roberts
Tumblr media
She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting.
He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.
Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites. The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary.
And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished in order to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.
Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be overly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can in order to stay alive and out of trouble. Easier said than done.
When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is—completely Ordinary.
“I meant what I said. I can’t take my eyes off you. I can’t take my mind off you.”
I look away from his burning gaze, shaking my head as I mutter, “Kai, I—”
“Paedyn.”
I still. I shiver. He says my name like it’s sacred, like it’s an oath he’s swearing.
He tilts his head to the side, eyes roaming over my face. “Tell me,” he murmurs, “what do you want me to call you?”
My eyes slowly meet his, confused by his question. “What do you want to call me?”
“I want to call you mine.”

Where Foxes Say Goodnight
author: sam burns
series: sleeping foxes #1
Tumblr media
genre: mystery paranormal romance
synopsis: Max is living the screenwriter dream. He's not even thirty, he's just won an Oscar, and hes dating the gorgeous star of his movie. But after that one magical night, everything crumbles. The movie star dumps him, and his latest screenplay is a blank document that stubbornly refuses to write itself. So Max decides to disappear into the middle of nowhere, and maybe obscurity. He's just getting settled into his new life when suddenly someone is trying to kill him. Gorgeous Gentry Fox seems like he wants to help. but the way he keeps showing up at just the right times is suspicious. Is he the aw-shucks good ol' boy he seems, or part of the plot to kill Max? Just as importantly, is he single?
finished: jan. 4 2024
rating: 4.0
review: i thought the romance would be a subplot, i was looking forward to the mystery/thriller aspect of it but the book wasn’t tense or unsettling like i usually read. even though it is different from what i usually read, it was not bad. it was actually good, i enjoyed my time reading it. i love queer romance, even if romance isn’t my favorite genre. the characters are lovable and really grow on you. if you’re looking for a heartwarming book that has a twang of mystery and paranormal activity, i can’t recommend this book enough. ESPECIALLY if you’re mlm!

Gratitude Journal Entry (8/7/24)
Tumblr media
Today I'm Grateful For:
*The opportunity to rest. My allergies have been acting up all day (not helped by my dad mowing and stir up even more pollen) and I've spent nearly all day in bed.
*Calibre. I've used Calibre in the past but haven't really used in for over a year. I have nearly 2,000 books (eBook/physical) and I wanted a way to keep them organized so that if I wanted to read something in a specific category, I wouldn't have to look through every single book. Thankfully Calibre is able to sort them for me. It will be really helpful during October-December when I want to read a lot of cozy mysteries or paranormal stuff.
*I have a weekly book schedule for what books I want to read and when I need to finish them in order to start the other. I'm OCD that way. While I originally thought I had to have The Book of Cold Cases finished my today, I was a day off and it's actually tomorrow that I need to finish it. I'm very grateful that I have an additional day because I got less than 20% read since I've felt so off today.
Something I'm Proud Of:
Listening to my body and resting. I feel so unproductive staying in bed all day. I had plans to do stuff today that required being more active, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I could have pushed myself, but I decided to hold off and just get the rest I needed.
Tomorrow I'm Looking Forward To:
My mom and I are going to the Bean Barn for breakfast so I can get biscuits and gravy and also a frappe. I can't decide if I want the Happy Camper again or if I want to try something else, but I'm just really excited about going. I absolutely LOVE their drinks. Their coffees just sort of blend together, but I've always thought that colder drinks have more flavor. I have to be very careful about drinking coffee because of my heart, so I just stick to frappes when I go out (or I make my own coffee at home with my own flavoring so I can see EXACTLY what's going in it).
Daily Affirmation:
Despite feeling unwell, I embraced the day with positivity and am proud of myself for listening to my body and finding joy in the moments that mattered.

Why is it so difficult to find recs or goodreads lists for adult speculative fiction by authors of color that aren't full of books that are a part of a series? Please, I just started retraining my attention span. Your book series sounds amazing but I cannot commit 8 books! Where are my beloved stand-alones?
(Throw "available on Libby" on top of everything, and I'm struggling)

Book Recommendations if You Love Gravity Falls
Am I making a list of books based off of a kid’s TV show that debuted eight years ago? Yes, because I recently watched the whole series twice in the past month. Gravity Falls just does so much in 40-episodes; family dynamics, spooky small town, adventure, a terrifying demonic antagonist, and the concept of Summerween. All of these books have at least one of those themes inside their…
