Royal Tiaras Highlights: Danish Emerald Parure Tiara

The tiara dates from 1840, when King Christian VIII commissioned an anniversary present for his wife, Queen Caroline Amalie. C.M. Weisshaupt created the parure, including the tiara, using emeralds that had already been in the family for a century. Many of the emeralds were originally given by King Christian VI to his wife, Queen Sophie Magdalene, in 1723; others were previously owned by Princess Charlotte.

The tiara is today a part of the Danish crown jewels. Every Danish queen since Caroline Amalie has worn the piece.

Random idea = random concept

• Celestia — "sick" version: Albinism. She has almost white colors, very sensitive skin to sunlight and weak health. Yes, she is princess of Sun but she cannot being under sunbeans a long time. Also her hair half dragging on the ground. Because her magic is weak due to albinism, which makes her very vulnerable to sun and her own solar magic. — "healthy" version: Symbolic albinism or Leucism. She has normal health and magic power, not vulnerable to sun. She is just kinda dazzlingly light like sunlight and her colors are pale like they have faded under Sun. Her exterior is symbolic and reference to belonging to the day luminary. Hair spreads on the ground just like aesthetics.

• Luna — "sick" version: Conditional melanism. Not melanism in original meaining, more likely as coloring of nocturnal animal. She is very dark and therefore is perfect to hiding at midnight and shadows. She is "wild" both figuratively and literally. Doesn't communicate with ordinary creatures, understands language of nocturnal animals, hunts (unknown how and for what exactly) and partly has habits of an animal. Does not tolerate daylight, sleeps in a dark place during day (possibly in cave) — "healthy" version: Melanism. She is normally in habits, communication and other things. She is just more dark than her original version. She is dark, but not completely black, like night. And she is tolerant to daylight, just late riser and love night hours. Her exterior is symbolic and reference to belonging to the night. Yes, her lunar c.m. isn't bright like moon but her silver eyes - yes.

Not official redesign, headcanon, AU or somthing else. Just random concept and nothing more. Maybe someday I'll draw them like this or maybe not.

It turned out to be too contrasting but in general this is such idea - Celestia is clearly visible in daylight and at night [in the dark] she can dazzle because of light colors. On contrary Luna is better visible at night, when it is already dark around and your screen is more contrasting but in daylight she can be invisible on dark background.

THEME: Witch Hat Atelier

I’ve noticed a pattern with witch games - they’re really popular in the GM-less gaming community. I think perhaps the idea of a Coven sharing magical power democratically is a really good match with GM-less games! Some of these games are directly inspired by Witch Hat Atelier, while others might need some intentional tweaking to make them fit.

Cellphone Grimoire, by Sketchmouse.

You are a witch in the 21st century. Times have changed, but magic is flexible. The city, however, can be unforgiving. But where there are witches, there will be a coven; a place to find support and be yourself.

This game is inspired by the Belonging Outside Belonging system, and written for WitchJam. It’s just 13 pages of text and not yet out of the playtest stage, but it’s free! Cellphone Grimoire focuses on the struggles of keeping up with your day-to-day problems and using magic to refresh you and keep your character’s spirits up.

If you want a game that won’t burn a hole in your pocket and combines the worries of a busy city with the creativity and release of a personal art or hobby, this might be worth checking out!

The Magical Year of a Teenage Witch, by Sky Latshaw.

There is a time in every witch’s teenage years when their magic is amplified and the foundations of their powers are set. This time is known as their Magical Year. Supernatural entities are drawn to them, spells manifest from the experiences they have, and skills are acquired quickly and easily.

Often witches are encouraged to live in a new place during this year of their life in order to amplify its effects. This is also the time the witch starts putting entries into their Spellbook, a cherished and important possession that will remind the witch of who they are and where their power comes from for decades on.

What life-changing experiences, friendships and powers will you discover in your Magical Year?

The Magical Year uses the Thousand Year Old Vampire system by Tim Hutchings. By answering prompts ordered in sets of three, you will string together vignettes that relate to each other and call back to your previous experiences.

However, if you want to delve into the personal conflicts and insecurities of a teenager with magical powers, this is a wonderfully introspective game. You can play it as a GM-less multiplayer game, but you can also play it solo!

This Night on the Rooftops, by C.M. Ruebsaat.

This is a game about gazing out over the smokestacks after dark, with the wind in your hair and a friend at your side and a thousand lights of progress on the streets below.

This Night on the Rooftops is a collaborative storytelling game for 2-5 players about friendship, growing up, and revolution. You will play members of a gang of children in The City, a fantastic world of industry and dying magic, where witches labour alongside factory-workers to make ends meet.

You will take on the role of one of 6 playbooks in a diceless and GMless experience: the Gutter Witch, the Soot Scrambler, the Tinkertoc, the Runaway Princess, the Disciple of the Tired God, or the Axekid in a story mixing slice-of-life with childhood adventure.

If you want conflict, this game has so much of it going on in the background. The city is primed for labour disputes, financial pressures, street-level magic and more. This game is also GM-less and diceless, using Growth, Chill and Desperate moves to help your group prepare for the worst, and rest after a job well done. As you play, expect the city to change; and your characters will have to change in order to keep up.

Cantrip, by Hipólita.

Cantrip is a roleplaying game about witches who are coming of age while studying at a magical Academy. They will grapple with their place in the world at large, their emotions, their budding relationships, the expectations placed on them by everyone in their lives, the secrets held by the Academy, the weird and wonderful creatures that reside within it, and the constant scheming of their fellow witches.

This game takes inspiration from a lot of media involving the magical and supernatural coexisting and clashing with a mundane world. The most direct inspiration is Studio Trigger’s Little Witch Academia and you’ll find that the playbooks closely resemble many of the characters in that anime. Other sources of inspiration include Witch Hat Atelier, The Owl House, and Kiki’s Delivery Service. More tangentially, slice-of-life anime like Yuru-Camp and Non Non Biyori provide a lot of the tonal inspiration.

Pick one of six witch archetypes and play to find out what the magical world has in store for you in Cantrip. This is a GM-less, iceless game that uses the Belonging Outside Belonging system, so you’ll collaboratively have power over the kind of magical academy all of your witches are attending. Each player will embody their character, but you’ll also split up elements of the world - other students, the school grounds, magical creatures and more!

The art for this game really drew me in, especially the image of a young witch crouching on her broomstick, using a spray can to paint some graffiti on a wall. If you want to build a vibrant, magical world together for your witches to explore, I recommend this game!

to "I beg you, don't go", their exchanged last words.

For Sapphire Fairy was married and pregnant,

She couldn't depart from her promised Elf King,

And Swan Princess who, for her, turned against her family

was not prepared to face what heartbreak could bring.

She couldn't get herself to stay any longer,

when she ran away, into the forest was lured;

and as all dark tales tell, the danger was lurking

a hunter was there, took the chance, killed the bird.

Yes, absolutely.

Paranormal:

My favorite paranormal romance series (possibly my favorite romance series in general), which has been very difficult for anyone to top, is Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole. Very hot, very funny, very high stakes, and very paranormal. A few of my all time books are in here. Definitely has an edge to it, so check your triggers (or feel free to ask me about individual books). It's so divinely insane.

Bride by Ali Hazelwood is a lighter paranormal, obviously, that I actually liked a lot. For people who've only read contemporary and aren't sure if they'd like PNR, this is a good taste test imo. It is a true paranormal romance, but Ali's style still comes through.

Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series is good; I've only read the first two so far, but I definitely enjoyed them. It's like... Vulcans meet shapeshifters? Great for people who enjoy an uptight meets wild moment (like me).

Thea Harrison's Dragonbound is SO good. It's a dragon shifter paranormal romance--I wasn't in love with the next two books in the series, but they are very interesting and I'm going to read more in the series. Dragonbound though... excellent.

Kristen Callihan's Darkest London series is historical paranormal, and another all time favorite series of mine. The one-two punch of Moonglow and Winterblaze just blew my mind. And Evernight? Please. Picture a Victorian romance, but there's an underground of paranormal creatures and societies. Great concept.

Bec McMasters has a series of steampunk-ish paranormal historicals. Her London Steampunk books--they include vampires and werewolves and such, and are really fun. I wasn't as hot on book 3 so I haven't read past that, but I plan on it. And a part of me wonders if my mood just wasn't right for book 3? Happens sometimes.

Sarah Hawley writes some really fun, lighthearted paranormal romances--A Witch's Guide to Fake Dating a Demon and A Demon's Guide to Wooing a Witch.

My favorite C.M. Nascosta by far is Run, Run Rabbit, which is a book about WEREWOLF LAWYERS! It's so hot. I love it.

If you want something on the dark gothic spooky side, Sierra Simone's Thornchapel is one of my all-time favorite series--and it's legit pretty creepy.

Fantasy:

Kerri Maniscalco's Kingdom of the Wicked -> Princes of Envy. Legitimately my favorite fantasy series at the moment. Typical disclaimer: you'll see Kingdom of the Wicked marketed as YA. It is not. Dark fantasy, super romantic, super entertaining, love it.

C.L. Wilson's Weathermages of Mystral is great--more traditional high fantasy romance.

A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen is a recent release I love--think viking fantasy romance. And the heroine is initially married to her hero's dad. GASP!

Consort of Fire by Kit Rocha. First in an ongoing series about a princess forced to marry a dragon shifter god she's secretly planning to kill... And her handmaiden, who's also an assassin/her lover. FFM.

Ruby Dixon's Aspects and Anchors series. Pulpy, fun, and adventurous fantasy romance series in which women from our world are hurtled into a fantasy world in this inter-dimensional situation. Super enjoyable and campy.

Milla Vane's A Gathering of Dragons. High stakes high fantasy romance, think battles, royal politics, TRUE enemies to lovers shenanigans.

India's Holton's Dangerous Damsels is like... historical fantasy romance, very whimsical and fun and light, set in an alternate Victorian era with witches and sky pirates and the such. GREAT.

Read recently (Feb 2023)

The Unbroken by C. L. Clark. Set in a fantasy world that is definitely meant to echo the way France colonized much of North Africa, this book follows a young soldier who had been stolen from her homeland and family by the colonizing Balladaire empire and raised (brainwashed basically) to be the perfect soldier, even as she's ordered to quell the rebellions of her own people. Meanwhile the princess of Balladaire wants change, but is both blocked from taking her throne and unsure of how exactly she wants to lead. A very intriguing world, interesting conflicts, and a romance that I kind of wish got more attention. My main issue was just how many times the main character flip-flopped her loyalty, sometimes more than once in a chapter, I honestly lost count. It got to the point where that choice started losing any importance, which is unfortunate since it's kind of meant to be the driving force of the book. It ended the only way it possibly could, and I'm interested on how exactly the sequel will build from that.

The Ruthless Lady's Guide to Wizardry by C.M. Waggoner. A rollicking ride set in a Victoria era where magic exists. A petty con artist and perpetually down-on-her-luck fire witch takes a job as a bodyguard to a rich lady. In the process, she accidentally gets caught up in a larger conspiracy with murder, drugs, money, and scandal. This one was a lot of fun and I really liked the main character and her narrative voice. Includes some queer romance as well.

City of Lies by Sam Hawke. Set in a city-state that sees itself as the pinnacle of freedom and art and equality, we follow siblings Jovan and Kalina as they try to navigate politics and war after their uncle is murdered, along with the ruling chancellor of the nation. In that power vacuum, they realize the religious oppression, long-standing inequity, corruption, and treason that has been festering at the core of the country they love and serve. I really liked this one, it's a slow start but I was so invested in both their POVs by the end. Lots of mystery, intrigue, and twists that I didn't see coming but made sense when I thought back on them.

The Luminous Dead by Caitlin Starling. This is sci-fi horror, which is not usually my genre, but it came highly recommended. We follow Gyre as she enters a cave on an expedition into its unknown depths. Usually, she'd have a team of support back on the surface, but all she gets is Em, cold and calculated and definitely holding something back about the nature of the mission. Very creepy, very visceral, I found myself jumping at shadows while reading, wanting to skip ahead a few pages to reassure myself it would be alright. If you like the genre, this is a great read.

Hollow Empire by Sam Hawke. Sequel to City of Lies, picks up about 2 years later. Jovan and Kalina and the city as a whole are struggling to pick up the pieces after the events of the previous novel. Some are trying to make things right, some are turning a blind eye, and some are actively resisting any change for the better. At the largest religious celebration of the year, all hell starts to break loose with new enemies and old, trying to untangle conspiracies, determine loyalties, making and breaking friendships and romances, and trying to reckon in the legacy their ancestors left them. Even better than the first book, I read this in like 2 days. Has a queer romance which I quite liked, as it's both gentle but steeped in the politics of its world. Really hoping for a third book in the series because I'm definitely not tired of these characters yet.
