Canary's thrill, the first to kill - chapter 8 (fragment)

Last chapter before session 7 comes out! Much more chill one, not a lot of action, but just what I like the most I think - writing conversations and interactions between characters :3

"Tangoooo!" Jimmy landed softly right in front of the wooden shack that his friend inhabited. Well, at least he would've, if it wasn't for a huge gaping crater, which all of a sudden emerged on his front yard. "Woah! What happened here?"

"Hi Jim!" the blazeborn peeked from his window, his tail flicking behind him in a mischievous way. "Yeah, Skizz tried blowing up my house! Good thing his aim sucks..."

"But your doesn't, as I've heard?" the phoenix looked up at him with a smirk.

"Hell yeah! Wait, I'll come down to you!"

Tango closed the door and after just a few moments, he opened the front door to greet his friend. He let out a soft meep as he narrowly avoided the huge hole right outside of his doorstep. Jimmy chuckled and reached out his hand to assist him. The blazeborn hasped with excitement.

"You've got talons! Wow!"

"Pretty cool, huh?" Jim smirked and the moment Tango grabbed his hand, he pulled him closer. The shorter man let out another squeak as he almost pushed the phoenix, landing right next to him. "Careful! You don't wanna be eliminated next, huh?"

"Naaah, there's no way, man! I'm still on green! You, on the other hand..." Tango smirked, leaning against his friends and put his hands on Jimmy's chest. "I'd give you a life right now, if I could..."

"I'll be fine... I'm winning this time, no matter what. and you better be there to see it!"

"Oh yeah? Well, that would be interesting, for sure..." Tango teased him, reaching out and stroking his finger through one of his lesser wings. Jimmy let out a happy chirp as he squished the man against himself. "And how are you going to achieve that?"

"Well, I have a few ideas" the phoenix smirked, his cheek rubbing against Tango's. "And I actually came here to ask you something..."

"Ask me? About what?"

Raising The White Flag

My friends... I surrender.

I've been trying for months to balance two writing projects simultaneously. I'd done it before - cranking out chapters on the fly with ease. But, over the last few months - especially since the Fascistpocalypse in November, my physical and - to a far greater extent, mental - health has been in absolute tatters. I am trying to navigate the health issues while working two full-time jobs and juggling two writing projects, and it's breaking me.

Beyond that, the three-chapter-a-week schedule of Reignited has prevented me from ever getting far enough ahead - due to all of the other things crippling my writing speed of late - to give me any time to work on book XIII. I've been prioritizing Reignited because it has the higher readership count, and because the drumbeat for new chapters is so much louder, but that means I never get to tell new story, and it's starting to feel like a chore to sit down and write at all. That way leads to a much more permanent form of author burnout that none of us want, and that could eventually call the completion of Phoenix itself into question. This action is being taken preventatively, in large part to cut that burnout and frustration off at the root before it can become a much more serious problem.

As much as it breaks my heart to admit defeat, something has to give.

In the next 24 hours, I intend to release the final chapter of Book II of Phoenix: Reignited Edition, as well as the long-overdue chapter 8 of Phoenix Odyssey Book XIII. Once that is done, I'm going to be tweaking the schedule as follows, such that I only have to manage writing one project at a time. I'll usually still be releasing two, but... more on that in a moment.

This is my current backlog situation. It's... pretty grim.

Of the six Book XIII chapters I have in the can, they're not sequential. I have today's, but I'll need to write more after that to close the gaps in Act 1 of book XIII.

My intent is to pause releases of Reignited - not for long, just a week or two - between books two and three. This will give me a few days (during which time I am going to try to take a vacation day or two from work for a mini-writing retreat) to crank out the remainder of Book XIII's Act 1. Releasing one chapter a week on Mondays, that would give me almost three months' worth of content in the can.

While those chapters release on Mondays, I can then flip back to Reignited, and hammer out book three. Note that book three is by far the weakest of the original series; it simply needs the most work. I will pause Book XIII writing while working on book III of Reignited, which may mean a gap of a week or two between book XIII's Acts 1 and 2 depending on how well the schedule holds.

I'll continue the back-and-forth until books IV (Reignited) and XIII (Odyssey) are done, and then we'll talk about what happens for books XIV and beyond, and the Reignited version of Phoenix Ascendant (books V - IX.) I know this is confusing. Here's the TL;DR:

I'm going to stop trying to write both ends of the timeline at the same time because it's driving me crazy

If the back-and-forth schedule holds, there shouldn't have to be gaps of more than a week or two in any project until both are across the finish line

This "limp along" strategy is intended to get me to the end of Reignited book 4 and Odyssey book XIII and we'll re-evaluate after that

I'm so sorry I haven't been able to keep up with everything. I bet on myself to do the impossible, and I did not count on the absolute nuclear warhead the last few months have been on my life on top of it. Could I have maintained it otherwise? Maybe. Probably. But second-guessing now is only going to drive me crazy. I promise I will do my best to get this content out to you as quickly - and in as high of a quality - as I can possibly manage while still keeping myself out of both the hospital and the loony bin. I will see this project done - all sixteen books, and Reignited too - if it kills me. It's just that I'd prefer it didn't kill me, and so I'm going to do it a bit slower than I originally planned.

I'm truly sorry.

random thoughts: i am terrified of finishing florescence. it's the thing i've spent the longest writing and it still is my love-letter to this community. for those of you who have enjoyed it so far, i hope that the ending satisfies you.

i'm also hoping to move to posting cicatrix every 2.5-3 weeks starting in may, and i will probably end up updating the other future projects list soon, as i have recently had a whole plethora of ideas. it's really just a matter of what i have time for and what i can prioritize. schematics for happiness may take a bit longer to debut because it will be longform, while the other things i'm considering vary from only one to eight parts. but trust i am working on it for you.

Johann doesn’t black out when he’s supposed to. For both of them, this has ramifications.

The next time Johann feels a warmth like the pyre, it comes in the spring, with summer hot on his heels. And it brings with it a gnawing, gods-awful feeling of dread.

At the onset of spring, Magnus, Merle, and Taako reduce three remaining Relics to two. To everyone’s shock, just as much as their relief, there are no casualties that the Temporal Chalice itself doesn’t reverse. And… just between Johann and his conscience, he much prefers the Chalice’s way to ‘erase’ a death. Even from well outside the thrall’s range, he can see the Relic’s appeal. One of the many, many reasons why he’s not a Reclaimer.

The Phoenix Fire Gauntlet had been one thing — with every, every single inoculated soul knowing just how innately destructive it was. But the Chalice?

The Red Robe had sworn to Johann, under a goddamn Zone of Truth, that the Relics were meant to stop something much, much worse. Johann can’t envision the Gauntlet, while standing at the moon’s edge and looking down at Phandalin, and imagine what the fuck the Red Robe might’ve meant. But he can almost, almost wrap his mind around it when he remembers the Chalice instead.

And… that’s where the dread comes from. Because… where the hell does that leave Johann, with the summer solstice fast approaching?

Plans for Aiding A Pal: Project Phoenix

I know it's been a while (and I'm thinking of creating a sideblog for my PPT Fanfics) and the poll has not ended yet, but I kind of figured out a few things lore/story-wise during the past week for my fanfic "Aiding A Pal". I'm still going to do the top three choices, just in a different way.

First off, the Giant Doey Dream Sequence would be its own one-shot and perhaps more of a story that Aiden tells to the children. In doing so, I created at least 8 Safe Haven Toys to use for my fics in general plus a Nightmare Critter!

As for the other two chapters, I decided that Chapter 4 and 6 will be reversed. Chapter 4 will be a story-plot chapter focusing on Matthew and Kevin while Chapter 6 will be a silly chapter with all three boys. I did this for a few reasons:

Chapter 4/5 would be the mid-way point of the story

Chapter 6 will be placed to ease tension (calm before the storm) because Chapter 7 (Kevin's chapter) would be the climax/heavy angst.

Timeline-wise, it would make sense to put it there as a nice segueway for Jack's character arc (since his chapter/my other fic "Mother Mine" take place before Yarnaby's chase)

I mentioned Yarnaby a lot in the fic, and at first, his scene would have been a flashback sequence, but since he was the reason the characters were in a strange position, I decided to give Yarnaby a more significant role.

It just works plot-wise and it does set up for the fics that come afterward/in general.

Anyway, the chapters will be reversed. I am taking ideas for silly safe nom prompts in chapter 6, so if any of you have ideas, feel free to share.

Now the big breakthrough you've all been waiting for... why I'm making Chapter 4 an important chapter and I finally gave a name to the AU besides "Aidenverse". This AU of stories is called "Project: Phoenix". Note I'm still developing it and the full understanding of how it plays out will be realized when Chapter 5 hits, but I have more info under the cut:

Project: Phoenix is essentially an experiment where the scientists wanted to resurrect someone without turning them into a Toy. Because it's frustrating to have staff killed and replaced constantly. Basically Sci-FI mad science/Frankenstein stuff. So they tested flowers and chemicals on people to see what happens. Most die within hours/days/weeks. The few who did survive long enough to get results also passed away but by different circumstances.

The study is called "Phoenix" named after the mythical creature that is reborn. The simple idea is that a human with the Phoenix gene would come back to life if any of the Experiments/Toys would kill them, making the human immortal (at least to the toys). However, besides the obvious side-effects of paranoia, hallucinations, effects due to Red Smoke, etc., there are other side effects that are unknown. However, there are notes that Phoenix humans who get exposed to a particular Monster Toy for a long period of time, especially with unique DNA, not only would it create a bond between human and monster, but slowly, the human's behavior would adapt to the toy they bond over and the monster would crave the human. (HINT HINT HINT).

The Project was proposed to Dr. Sawyer who did try, but then decided it was unrealistic and dropped the project. Dr. White picked up on it and did experiments.

You will find out more in the next chapter but to give you a rundown:

For this AU, someone/something (perhaps the same being who gave the Player the tape and letter) laced the package with pollen from the Phoenix toxin that affected Aiden. Because of this, Aiden is cursed with side-effects and cannot die. He gets resurrected every time he gets killed. By the time "Aiding A Pal" begins, that's when the unknown territory/potential of the project kicks in.

Needless to say, Doey and Aiden will be in for a wild ride!

Summary: Trucy Wright sees that her Daddy's friend, Miles Edgeworth, makes him happy in a way she can't. She knows he's sad and lonely, despite trying his best to hide it from her. She makes a promise to herself that she would try to have Miles around as often as she could, for his happiness.

Or, an evolution of Wrightworth's relationship through Trucy's eyes. Trucy and co. sees Phoenix and Miles feel that special way that adults feel for each other and tries to matchmake them. It's mostly Trucy doing that, though.

Summary:

Brock is one of the rare few to have a physical inner spirit. Every person in the world had a spirit they could connect with, but only a confirmed 10% could manifest that spirit into a true animal.

Unfortunately for that 10%, 8 out of 10 of those people went missing soon after manifesting their first ability. Brock was one of that 8, and he learned it was a secret facility that were performing experiments on these people to see the extent of their spirits powers and if they can help the other 90% of the world manifest their own.

Brock was taken from his family when his fire ability appeared at 8 years old, and 18 years later was one of the oldest manifested in the facility.

When the experiments get too much, he only has two people to turn to, a shark manifested next door named Jon and his mysterious guard he's known for 7 years.
