Qilin are benevolent creatures, but do not mistake that kindness for weakness. They are powerful creatures that will fight fiercely to protect the innocent and punish the wicked. Solidarity with Palestine 🇵🇸

Something a bit different than what I normally do, but I hope you all still like it.
I was inspired by the ornate tapestries of the Medieval period, one of favorites being “The caged unicorn” So this is my very subtle homage to it.

Happy New Year!
Pencil sketch of a kirin character I'm working on. He'll be a companion/mentor figure to my fawn character and has a more humanoid form. Kirin's in this setting are related to equines but not quite the same. Took inspiration from rhinos and alligators for tough leathery skin and armor. They are rare, intelligent and long lived, some have natural magical abilities. Still roughing them out.

Creatures from Chinese mythology (Moon Rabbit, Sun Crow, Pixiu, Qilin) (1/3)
Moon Rabbit: The Moon Rabbit is the companion of the moon goddess, Chang’e. If you look at the full moon, you can see the Moon Rabbit working hard mixing up an elixir of immortality in its mortar.
Sun Crow: The Sun crow, also known as the Sanzuwu, is a three-legged crow that carries the sun. In ancient times, there were ten sun crows that carried ten separate suns. The ten Sun Crows each took turns ushering in the day, until one day where they all decided to rise at once, causing a great calamity!
Pixiu: The Pixiu are auspicious creatures that draw in good fortune (both of the luck variety and the gold variety) and ward off evil spirits. Their diet is made up of gold and precious gemstones.
Qilin:
Qilin are benevolent, mystical beasts wreathed in flame and smoke. They are said to walk on clouds to avoid harming even a single blade of grass. Its name is often translated as “unicorn” in English, and it is known as the Kirin in Japanese.
Fun fact! The image of the Qilin was at one point associated with that of the giraffe due to their similarities (giraffes have hooves and long legs like the Qilin, giraffes’ ossicones look like horns, and giraffe spots resemble a Qilin’s scales).

The stormchaser kirin (Kirinus nimbus), also known as the river warden, is a medium-sized, herbivorous chimera native to the great savannas of the Sunken Continent. Individuals stake claims to stretches of river banks and local watering holes and become increasingly territorial until the beginning of the rainy season. Its double set of fleshy whiskers are highly sensitive to changes in humidity and barometric pressure and are thus thought to enable it to predict the weather. Individuals are often observed running in the wake of thunderstorms. Kirin will briefly gather in herds of up to a few hundred individuals to mate and graze together during the peak of the rainy season before dispersing once again.

(Extended species description under readmore.)
The stormchaser kirin (Kirinus nimbus), also known as the river warden, is a medium-sized, herbivorous chimera native to the great savannas of the Sunken Continent
A double set of flexible fleshy whiskers grow from the kirin's snout and lower jaw. These neuron-dense appendages are highly sensitive to changes in humidity and barometric pressure. It is theorized that these whiskers enable kirin to predict incoming weather up to one hundred miles away, and it has been observed to run in the wake of thunderstorms.
Like other kirin species, its head and nose horns are characterized by a two-part structure. Bony cone-shaped protrusions grow from its skull and are covered in a keratinous sheath. The outer layer is typically shed shortly after the beginning of the rainy season and regrown by the peak of the dry season. The size of each of its horns as well as the number of tines in the head horns increase with an individual's age.
This species is characterized by its lion-like mane and tail as well as the feathering on its legs. This thick fur starts as a dark gray on foals and lightens with age. Kirin have been observed to puff up their mane and tail in both territorial and mating displays.
Adult stormchaser kirin are solitary for much of the year. Individuals stake claims to grazing territory along stretches of river banks and local watering holes. They become increasingly territorial until the beginning of the rainy season and will actively drive away any animal they perceive as a competitor (or a danger to their foals in the case of brooding individuals).
Kirin will briefly gather in herds of up to a few hundred individuals (also known as tempests) to mate and graze together during the peak of the rainy season. A grown female (also known as a rin) will gather and defend a harem of two to eight males (also known as a ki). While this species does not exhibit a high degree of sexual dimorphism, stormchaser rins are slightly larger on average than kis.
Rins lay soft, leathery-shelled eggs in small clutches in the dry season. Nests are typically made in dense, thorny thickets. Superfecundation is common in kirin, and each kirin foal may have a different sire. Foals mature quickly and either wander away or are driven out by their mother by the following dry season. Adolescent foals from the same clutch have been observed to briefly travel together in a group known as a scud.
Mortality rate is high amongst young stormchaser kirin, with only an estimated one in four surviving to adulthood. Sand sharks and phoenixes are common predators, and older kirin will often kill younger individuals in territorial skirmishes.

A friend of mine gave me some beautiful cloud-patterned yarn for a holiday/b-day present, and I’m so excited to finally use it! I had a lot of fun figuring out leg/body proportions on this guy. He’s going to be the centerpiece for an event I’m going to in a few weeks and I’m so stoked with how he turned out!

Yinglong - Winged Dragon, God of Rain in Chinese mythology
Yinglong (lit. 'responsive dragon') is a dragon that belonged directly to the Yellow Emperor (reign dates: 2697–2597 or 2698–2598 BCE), with four legs, bat- or falcon-like wings and three claws on each foot. It is allowed to access between heaven and earth. It also has the ability to store water and make it rain.
Yinglong is the chief of of the four dragons are the Azure, Red, White and Black dragons, and is said to give birth to the Heavenly Horse (Qilin), and become Yellow Dragon in old age. The Yellow Dragon is located in the middle of the Five Dragon King (Ref), is a part of Wuxing & the Four Symbols (Ref2) as the embodiment of the element of earth.
The (2nd century BCE) Huainanzi uses Yinglong in three chapters. "Forms of Earth" (Chapter 4) explains how animal evolution originated through dragons, with Yinglong as the progenitor of quadrupeds.
“All creatures, winged, hairy, scaly and mailed, find their origin in the dragon. The yu-kia (founder of birds) produced the flying dragon, the flying dragon gave birth to the phoenixes, and after them the luan-niao and all birds, in general the winged beings, were born successively. The mao-tuh ("hairy calf") produced the ying-lung the ying-lung (yinglong) gave birth to the kien-ma (heavenly horse), and afterwards the qilin and all quadrupeds, in general the hairy beings, were born successively. …”
Qilin are a type of legendary animal in Chinese mythology. They resemble deer in appearance, are large, standing 5 m ( approx. 16 ft) tall, and are unicorns with a face resembling a dragon, a bull's tail and horse's hooves, and qilin horns. Its back is five-coloured, its fur is yellow and it has scales on its body.

Finally Binghe is here! I know he’s often depicted as a Changeling, but I feel as if a Kirin (or would Qilin be more appropriate?) would better suit him, because they’re supposed to be heralds for great rulers and are “heavenly” beasts and are full of benevolence- which is kind of ironic and hilarious to me considering, well, the entire novel.
In this universe Binghe would have been disguised as a unicorn and raised as one, his horn would be written off as odd but nothing that would indicate his heritage. He also gets a cute blanket when he arrives at the mountain because I say so and it looks cute.
I swear I will write my notes down eventually
