you put down your phone with a sigh. your mother had just given you a call to let you know that one of your cousins was getting married in a month, and your mother wanted to let you know the plan for their wedding early on so you could get started on planning your trip back to your hometown. she gave you dates and dressing codes, and other wedding things that blended together into one blur in your head as you mindlessly responded to your mothers queries and requests.
one of the things she brushed over was the fact that you had to bring a date for the entire wedding. the ceremony, the dinner, the dance, you always had to have someone on your arm. it was a rule that your cousin was apparently very adamant about. in the blur of questions from your mother, you had accidently answered a question that you should have saved for a later time, when you hadn’t been just getting home from a 2 hour long exam.
“so, y/n, you do have a date right?”
“yes, i do.”
your mother gasped, bringing herself to a conclusion that you had not written. “my baby has a boyfriend? oh, how sweet!” her coos were quickly pushed aside when you heard a door creak open on her end of the line, followed by your fathers voice asking her if she was ready for dinner. your mother quickly said goodbye as you pressed the red ‘end call’ button, and the reality of the belief your mother was under finally pieced together in your head.
your family are expecting you to show up at a family gathering with a boyfriend you do not have.
you leaned forward, elbows digging into your knees as you tangled your hands in your hair. every thought of how you could fix this raced through your head at once, but every solution made less sense than the last. in the end, you came to the conclusion that you would have to find someone willing to be your boyfriend for a weekend, which is a statement that is easier said than done.
laughter echoed around the room as you sat on the sofa of hoshi’s apartment with your head in your hands. while you thought the entire situation was simply traumatic, everyone else thought it was hilarious. some of them had pity, but even the sympathetic ones were stifling their laughter as they comforted you.
you couldnt help but laugh along at the absurdity of the entire thing. it was really something that could only happen to you.
“guys, i seriously have no idea what to do! its not like i can just rent a boyfriend for a couple days!” dokyeom was holding onto mingyus arm as he laughed so hard he was out of breath. joshua faked a serious face as he looked towards you. “thats not true, im sure you could rent hoshi for the right price.”
you sighed a dramatic, exasperated sigh as you flopped back onto hoshis sofa, staring at the ceiling as you laughed. the laughter fizzled out and everyone realized it was getting late.
“i should probably get going and try to find a desperate guy who would free up a weekend to go to my cousins wedding with me.” you laughed as you stood up, brushing your hair back behind you. wonwoo stood up with you. “y/n, i could give you a ride home, since its the same building anyways.” you smiled and nodded towards him as you said goodbye to everyone and followed wonwoo to his car.
the ride back to your apartment building was quiet, with the low radio being the only sound filling the car. car rides with wonwoo always had a peaceful silence, never awkward. it was comfortable.
you thought over the sentence a thousand and one times in your head before you finally broke the silence. “uh, wonwoo.. can i ask you, um, a big favour?” you looked down at your hands before looking over at the man next to you, a grin now plastered across his face as he glanced in your direction. “i wonder what this could be?” he said, followed by a chuckle. your ears turned pink as you fiddled with your fingers in your lap, a smile wide on your face to match his.
you took a deep breath before finally asking, “wonwoo, could you be my date to my cousins wedding?” you smiled over at him from the passenger seat, trying your best to look convincing enough for him to say yes. all things considered, something must have worked. “of course i will, it’d be an honour to be your boyfriend for a couple days.” the pink flush on your ears travelled all across your face as you smiled ear to ear. he parked at your apartment complex as you leaned over and wrapped your arms around his neck. “thank you so so so much wonwoo!” he laughed, wrapping his arms around your waist and lightly squeezing as you pulled away and opened the car door. “ill send you all the details when i know all the details,” you told wonwoo as you walked into your apartment building together. he nodded as he pressed the button for the elevator. “hopefully ill be able to impress your family.” you and wonwoo smiled at each other as the elevator door beeped open and you stepped inside.
-
you sat at your dinner table, a notepad and pen sitting in front of you. your mother had just called and informed you of all the details of the wedding, and you decided that it would make your life easier if you wrote down everything she said this time. she gave you details on where everyone would stay, the timeline of events, and every little thing in between. the phone call had lasted for at least 20 minutes. you had always said, your mother was nothing if not thorough. after overlooking the list in front of you, you picked up your phone and typed a text.
y/n : hey, are u busy rn?
wonu 🐱 : I’m at practice, is everything ok?
y/n : oh yeah its fine, its just stuff about the wedding. call me when you get home :)
wonu 🐱 : Will do. :)
while you waited for wonwoo to finish practice, you absentmindedly scrolled on your phone. as you did, you saw countless pictures of people from your hometown posting pictures with their significant others. you liked their pictures and kept scrolling, but the photos made you feel.. off. since you had moved away from your hometown, you hadnt had any relationships. you had met people, but nothing ever amounted to anything more than a coffee date or a study session at your campus library. you were just always so busy with school and spending time with the boys that you had simply never sought out a relationship in your years of living away from your family. while you were content with your independence, seeing photos of couples happy and in love made you feel left out. not envy, just a feeling of ‘i would be happy with what they have’.
since starting university, romance has been on your back burner to say the least. you had barely considered your own feelings between exams and essays. maybe this was why every time your friends caught someone checking you out, or blatantly flirting with you, your response was always “really? i didnt notice.” your group of friends from university had always been suspicious of your relationship with the 13 men you spend most of your freetime with. they were convinced that if you did end up having a secret relationship, it would be with one of them. you shut down the accusations every time, insistent that they were just friends. and thats all they were. just friends.
breaking you out of your mindless scrolling, your phone rang. you shook out of your daze as you accepted the call. “hey! how was practice?” wonwoo groaned dramatically. “you dont even understaaaand!” you laughed and shook your head at his complaining. “but im sure ill make it. alright, whats the deal with the wedding?” he said, leaving his dramatics behind. “yes! okay, so there is one major difference than what i was told.. it will be a whole week, not just the weekend. if you cant make it its fine i understa-” wonwoo cut you off. “oh thats okay! i dont mind.” you paused in shock. “you dont mind? like you dont mind being a fake couple for a week?” you had expected him to back out, not because he was unreliable, but because it was a big thing to agree to. but, wonwoo insisted. “im serious! id be happy to, itd be nice to get out of this place for a bit and spend time with your family.” lots of people saw wonwoo as being a cold person, but anyone who knows him knows hes a huge softie. you were overjoyed at wonwoos willingness to do this for you.
you went on to explain everything to wonwoo, as he listened attentively and was eager to help you and your family in any way he was able to. the wedding was on a thursday afternoon in the middle of june. your mother wanted you to come home a couple days before the wedding, so you decided that you would get there on the sunday before the wedding, and leave the day after the wedding. wonwoo agreed and said he could even drive (as long as you gave him directions). you had thought you had everything all in order, but wonwoo piped up with something you havent even considered up until this point.
“wait, so what about our fake relationship? we need details to make it believable.” wonwoo really was an actor at heart. until now, you had entirely forgotten that you would actually need to seem like a couple in order to be perceived as a couple. “yeah youre right, what kind of things would we have to detail though?” you both thought about the bare minimum for a second, before deciding the things you would decide on beforehand and the things you could just make up on the spot if necessary. “alright, i think we should figure out how we met and how long we’ve been together. those are the stereotypical new couple questions.” wonwoo sounded like he knew what he was talking about, so you just went along with it. “how about, we met when i was working at that convenience store on the corner, and we’ve been together… 6 months?” you were completely pulling this out of thin air, but wonwoo hummed in agreeance on the other end of the phone call. “convenience store, 6 months. sounds believable to me.”
with everything clarified about your cousins wedding, all there was left to do was wait. well, besides finding something to wear, and packing, and tying any lose ends in your schoolwork. but other than that it was a breeze. the month did seem to fly by. in no time, you were fitting your suitcase into the trunk of wonwoo’s car and leaving to make the drive to your hometown. along the way, wonwoo made sure to ask lots of questions about your family and childhood friends, and you told him lots of stories as well. as you pulled into the driveway of your family home, you were hit with a wave of nostalgia. the house hadnt changed a bit in the years you were away.
as you and wonwoo got out of the car and began taking your luggage out, the front door of the house swung open and your mother rushed out, eager to see you after so long. she ran down the driveway in order to engulf you in a bear hug. you laughed as she squeezed you so hard you thought youd explode. your father stood in the doorway, arms crossed and a toothy grin across his face as he leaned against the doorframe. wonwoo shut the trunk of his car, and your mothers attention immediately switched to him. you laughed as he squeezed his cheeks and gave him an equally tight bear hug.
“oh its so nice to meet you dear! what did you say your name was?” your mother had her hands firmly planted on wonwoos shoulders as she smiled up at him. wonwoos eyes were bright and happy. “im wonwoo, its lovely to meet you mrs l/n.” your mother cooed at wonwoo as she pulled him in for another hug. she admired you and wonwoo together, until the fire alarm started blaring from the kitchen, prompting her to run past your father and back into the house. wonwoo picked up the bags as the two of you followed your mother into the house, albeit less rushed than she was.
your father automatically took a liking to wonwoo, talking to him at the table as you helped your mother finish dinner. the sight of them laughing together and your father lightly hitting wonwoos shoulder with a smile was such a warm moment. the domesticity of it all made your heart swell. with the ding of a timer, you and your mother brought the dishes over to the table and laid them in front of wonwoo and your father. wonwoo looked at the table in awe. you made sure to tell him that your mother wasnt the best at making the right portions, which was evident by the mountains of food sitting in front of you.
your mother took her seat next to your father, and you took the one across from her, on wonwoos right. he smiled at you as you sat down, and you smiled back, trying to ignore the pink flush you could feel hazing across your face. all the time you had known wonwoo, why was being around him making you feel this way now? you quickly pushed the thought aside as your mother began asking questions between bites.
“so, how long have you two lovebirds been together?” she had a smirk on her face as she glanced between you and wonwoo. wonwoo spoke before you got the chance. “we’ve known each other for longer, but i officially asked her to be my girlfriend 6 months ago.” the fond look on his face as he said this would make anyone melt. if you hadn’t been a part of the ruse, you wouldve never questioned the love in his eyes. damn, hes a good actor. he gazed over at you as he finished his sentence. you smiled back at him before turning to your mother. “our 6 month anniversary was actually last week.” your mother held her hands to her chest as she congratulated you both. wonwoo held your hand on the table as your mother began telling a story about how your father had originally asked her to be his girlfriend. you didnt hear much of the story over your own heartbeat ringing in your ears. wonwoos hand was warm, and much bigger than yours. you had decided that wonwoo was simply too good at acting the boyfriend role. did he have some secret girlfriend none of you knew about? was he taking classes? you tried to act casual as he rubbed his thumb along the back of your hand. you knew you couldnt overthink anything that would happen over the next week. it was all just for the act, right? right.
dinner went by in a blur, and soon you were being led to the spare room your mother had cleaned out for you and wonwoo to share. you shivered as you walked in. it was cooler in this room than the rest of the house. it wasnt major, though, so you didnt say anything to your mother about it. she smiled as she disappeared down the hallway, leaving you and wonwoo in the bedroom, alone. as soon as your mother left, wonwoo flopped down onto the bed in the middle of the room. you looked at him and laughed. he closed his eyes and pretended to be asleep, even though the growing smile on his face as you stood over him with your hands on your hips gave him away. you shook your head as you walked to the other side of the room where wonwoo put your bags. you rumaged through your bag for a sweater. you dug through the bag, but you couldnt find the one hoodie you swear you packed. defeated, you sat on the floor next to your bag and pulled out every item of clothing and put it in your lap. no sweater. with a frustrated sigh, you scooped everything back into your bag and stood up. at this point, wonwoo had sat up, his arms supporting his weight as he watched you get up.
“whats wrong?” he quirked an eyebrow. you gestured to your bag. “i forgot to pack a hoodie, i swear i did, but i mustve left it on my sofa.” wonwoo thought for a second before sitting up entirely. “here, take this.” he began taking off the hoodie he was wearing, and for a second, you couldnt take your eyes off of him. as he pulled the sweater over his head, the shirt he wore underneath rose with it, revealing his bare abs. you stood watching, mouth agape. everyone had said that wonwoo worked out a lot, but you had never seen the proof for yourself. you snapped out of it as he fixed his shirt and ran one hand through his hair, passing the sweater to you in the other. “oh wonwoo, its fine, i was just gonna ask my mom for one.” but, he wouldnt take no for an answer. he tilted his head to the side as he tossed the sweater in your direction. you caught it, and he smiled that gorgeous smile youve been seeing all day.
you pulled wonwoos hoodie over your head, and you were engulfed by the smell of his cologne. the scent overtook your senses as you situated yourself into the sweater. the warmth of the material mixed with wonwoos leftover body heat warmed you up instantly. so much that when you caught wonwoo staring at you wearing his hoodie, you didnt even feel the way your face instantly heated up as you sat on the bed next to him. he moved over to give you room to move further onto the bed, and suddenly the thought of being closer to wonwoo made your heart race.
wonwoo sat on the bed, typing away on his phone as you slid onto the mattress next to him. you watched him, focused on the message he was sending. the black tshirt he had been wearing under his hoodie was tight enough that it hugged all the parts of his body in the right ways. the way the fabric draped across his chest, and was rolled up at the sleeves. as wonwoo put his phone down and looked in your direction, you were quick to look away and take your own phone out of your pocket. luckily, he didnt seem to notice your staring. wonwoo looked past you, towards the clock above your head. “is it really that late already?” you glanced up at the time on your phone screen. “11:30? yeah, i guess.” wonwoo raised his eyebrows in surprise and stood up, leaving you by yourself on the bed. he began rummaging through his bag before pulling out a pair of sweatpants and another tshirt. he left the room without a word, presumably to go to the bathroom to change and get ready for bed. you did the same, shutting the door and quickly getting changed before he came back into the bedroom.
after getting changed, you lightly knocked on the bathroom door so you could brush your teeth. as you did, the door swung open and you were greeted by wonwoo with a toothbrush already hanging out of his mouth. you laughed to yourself as you walked past him in order to get to the sink. as you started brushing your teeth, you straightened your back and stood next to wonwoo in the mirror. not able to easily smile, you both did your best to smile at each other with your eyes through the vanity mirror. the two of you stood there in the mirror together, before wonwoo finished up and you followed behind him not long after.
when you walked into the bedroom, you were greeted with wonwoo creating a sort of barrier in the middle of the bed made of decorative throw pillows that your mother had laid out on the bed for when you got there. you stood in the doorway, letting him finish whatever he was doing before you began to question him. hearing the door shut, he turned around, and gestured to the bed. “i thought itd make you feel more comfortable.” you smiled at the sentiment, but you hadnt really thought to this point yet. you completely forgot about the fact that you and wonwoo would be sharing a bed for the next week. while you or wonwoo could have just slept on the sofa, the facade that you were busy putting on was more important. so, pillow barrier it was. you shivered as you snuggled under the duvet that was on the bed, still feeling that same chill that you did when you first walked into the room earlier that day. “goodnight, y/n.” wonwoos voice came from behind you. “goodnight, wonwoo.” you smiled as you said it, and wonwoo clicked the switch for the lamp, enveloping you both in the darkness of the night.
warmth. when you woke up the next morning, the first thing you noticed was the sudden warmth that you felt, compared to the chill from the night before. at first, you equated it to the shine of the sun that was streaming in through the cracks of the blinds. but it was a different warmth. you opened your eyes, curious to find the answers to your questions. somehow, as soon as your eyes fluttered open, all of your questions were answered in one glance. on the floor next to the bed laid one of your mothers decorative pillows, the ones that should have been in the middle of the bed, and not on the floor next to the (obviously broken) space heater. as you started to fully wake up, you felt slow, light breaths on the back of your neck. you also felt the arms snaked around your waist, and the hands that lightly rested on the mattress in front of you. your mind went blank. what were you supposed to do? move and wake him up? leave it and pretend it didnt happen? in the moment, you decided to go with the latter. carefully stretching towards the nightstand on your side of the bed, you grabbed your phone and pulled your arm back to your body. wonwoo stirred slightly, but stayed asleep. the clock on your phone read 6:00am, so you felt no reason to wake him up already.
you had no idea at what point in the night this had happened, but some part of you wasnt mad it happened. wonwoos body heat was enough to keep you warm, and youd be lying if you didnt like the feeling of his arms wrapping around you as you slept. the almost silent snores coming from behind you had somehow lulled you back to sleep, as you woke up 20 minutes later with your phone on the bed next to your pillow. you also noticed how your back was suddenly no longer covered, sending a shiver down your spine. when you heard the footsteps approaching the bedroom, you decided to just pretend you were still asleep instead of facing the events of the night. the door creaked and shut, as you felt the bed dip back down behind you. you didnt say anything, but soon after you felt the same arm creep back around your waist and settle back onto its previous place on the mattress. wonwoo settled into place, as did you.
the questions in your head did make some points. if wonwoo had accidentally started cuddling you at night, why would he return to the same position while awake? how would you address this? you just decided not to. the comfort of having him flush against your back overpowered the thoughts of wanting to stop it. you never wanted the morning to end, although you knew you obviously couldn’t stay in bed all day. it was still pretty early, so you just didn’t bother to worry about getting up just yet. your strategy of pretending to be asleep had been successful before. you closed your eyes as sun began to shine more brightly through the small opening in the curtains. maybe it was just your own, but as you felt yourself drift asleep again for the second time that morning, it was as if you could feel wonwoo’s own heartbeat against your back.
you weren’t sure how long you had slept, but you felt a light push on your shoulder as you began to feel yourself wake up again. “hey, wake up. it’s 8:00.” your eyes slowly opened as you looked over at wonwoo sitting on the edge of the bed. his hair was messy, and flat on one side. you smiled at the sight in front of you, as he scrunched his nose and ruffled his hair. god, he really was beautiful. you had always known that wonwoo was conventionally handsome. but seeing him in this context, just waking up as the sun shone on him, he was breathtaking. you quickly realized that you had been staring at him for longer than what seemed normal, so you began to sit up and try to wake up fully. you yawned and stretched as wonwoo walked in front of you to open the blinds all the way. you groaned and covered your eyes dramatically. wonwoo laughed, smiling down at you as you opened one eye and glared up at him. he picked up his clothes and made his way out of the bedroom. you watched as he left and shut the door behind him, and you sighed. this week just started, and the outcomes are already looking questionable for keeping your relationship the same as it was before.
as you left the bathroom after brushing your teeth, the smell of breakfast filled the hallways. your mother had always been the best chef, and her cooking was one of your favourite things about coming home. you walked back to the bedroom and peeked through the door, only to notice that wonwoo was nowhere to be seen. thats when you heard your parents laughter travel up the staircase. you briefly smiled to yourself as you grabbed your phone from the bed and shoved it in your pocket. you headed downstairs and saw your parents and wonwoo sitting in the same seats as they had been the evening before. they all smiled brightly as you walked through the kitchen. “good morning sweetheart!” your mother beamed as she gestured for you to come eat. you sat down with wonwoo on your left again, and smiled at him as you reached past him for a pitcher of water to pour some into your glass. your mother gushed at this small interaction, making a comment to your father about how much the two of you remind her of them as young adults. “how did you both sleep? well rested for the festivities?” you both smiled and nodded as wonwoo spoke. “we slept well! i cant wait to meet more of your family, if they’re all like you three im in for a great week.” he grinned as your parents erupted with laughter and joy. wonwoo was always one for buttering up people, and god was he good at it. a small smile crept onto your face as your parents started telling wonwoo all about your family. you ate quietly as he sat listening intently to everything your mother was telling him.
the wedding wasnt for another two days, but your family had planned a small get-together prior just for everyone to warm up and see each other before the wedding. yourself and wonwoo had decided to just tag along with your parents rather than drive two separate cars. this party was more casual than the wedding, so you didn’t have to dress up that much. the two of you sat in silence in the backseat as your parents spoke amongst themselves. without warning, wonwoos hand made its way to your thigh, just above your knee. you looked down as his hand made contact with your skin through the rip in your jeans. he didnt bat an eye. he continued looking out the window, or looking at his phone. meanwhile, you tried to act like his touch didnt send electricity coursing through your body. without any second thought, you rested your hand on his and looked straight ahead as you tried to ignore your heartbeat pounding in your ears.
as you arrived at your aunts house, you noticed the amount of cars parked outside. you know your family is large, but visualizing it like this makes it seem crazy. your eyes widened at the sight, and you could even hear some of your families laughter before you even got inside. wonwoo walked by your side into the house. the same hum of talking remained for moments before everyone realized that more family had joined them. the house erupted, with aunts and uncles and cousins and grandparents all rushing over to greet the four of you. you hugged all of them, muttering quick ‘hello’s and giving smiles to relatives you hadnt seen in years. after some time everyone began returning to their prior seats, and you all followed suit. in the commotion, you hadn’t even noticed wonwoos hand had come to rest on your lower back.
as you sat down, it felt as though all eyes in the room gravitated to yourself and wonwoo. you looked around before clearing your throat. “everyone, this is my boyfriend wonwoo!” wonwoo smiled and gave a small wave. your family all smiled and started introducing themselves at once. you both laughed at the acts, but he made sure to speak to every person who was there. they all immediately adored him. you spent the evening catching up with family and exchanging old childhood memories. wonwoo chatted with your family as well, telling them about his life and family, as well as your ‘relationship’. throughout the night, his arm stayed wrapped around your shoulders the entire time. every so often when conversation died down you would look up at him to notice he had already been looking at you. you both giggled and turned away, somewhat flustered by the other.
your parents checked the time, noticing that it had been way later than they thought it was. you all stood up and began saying your goodbyes. as you spoke to your cousin who was getting married, you stifled a yawn. wonwoo noticed and smiled to himself as his arm found its way around your waist. he congratulated your cousin, and talked to her for a bit as you found yourself slowly sinking into wonwoos side. “i think someones tired, we should get going.” he and your cousin laughed as you nodded your head. you gave her one last hug as you followed your parents out of the house and back into the car. on the way back to the house, you had rested your head on wonwoos shoulder. as you fell in and out of consciousness, wonwoos hand lightly patted your head as you yawned.
you felt the car come to a stop as you pulled back into your parents driveway. you lifted your head and looked around, catching wonwoos eye as he gave you a fond look. you both got out of the car and went straight to your room after saying goodnight to your parents. rooting through your suitcase, you grabbed some pajamas and headed for the bathroom to change and get ready for bed. you drowsily brush your teeth, as theres a quiet knock at the door. opening the door, youre met with wonwoo, toothbrush in hand. you try to give him a smile as you move over to give him some room. since coming to your parents house, brushing your teeth together had become a common occurrence. it was peaceful, and the silence was never awkward. although, it was rare for you and wonwoo to encounter awkward silence at any moment. silence with him was always calm, never awkward. you both just enjoyed each others company, and you both knew that. after a couple minutes of standing together at the sink, you both finished getting ready and went back to the bedroom. too tired to worry about wonwoos pillow ‘solution’ from the night before, you both just crawled into bed facing away from each other. you muttered goodnights as he flicked off the lamp.
you found yourself waking up at some point in the middle of the night shivering. the room had cooled off more than it was before, and the one blanket you had wasnt doing the best job. the air conditioning had to be on the lowest setting possible. you could still hear wonwoos soft snores as you moved gingerly and stood up, so you assumed he was still fast asleep. as you walked past the end of the bed, you heard him speak in a low whisper. “where are you going?” he was groggy, his eyes barely opening to look at you in the dark. “oh, im cold so im just going to grab another blanket. you can go back to sleep.” he nodded gently as his head layed back down on the pillow. you made your way to your mothers linen closet and grabbed a fluffy blanket from the top of the pile. as you got back in bed and snuggled back in with the other blanket, you heard wonwoos voice again. “wanna come over here?” you turned over in confusion to look at him, but them you saw what he meant. his arm was lifted, inviting you to snuggle into him. as you shivered again, you thought, ‘whats the worst that could happen?’ so, you shifted towards wonwoo until you met his chest and his arms wrapped the blankets around the two of you. with one of his arms under your head and the other around your waist, you pressed your head to his chest and drifted away to the sound of his heartbeat.
waking up in wonwoos arms again was a shocking experience for half asleep you. as you slowly felt yourself waking up, the warmth surrounding you yet again confused you for a moment. you blinked yourself awake before remembering the events of the middle of the night. the air in the room remained slightly cool as you began to slip out from underneath the blankets. wonwoo had always been a heavy sleeper, as he didnt budge when you snuck out from his hold. you made your way out of the room, the air in the rest of the house feeling the same as it did in your bedroom. you noticed the early morning sun that had been shining through the blinds. suddenly, you realized it may have been earlier than you thought. you shut the bedroom door as quietly as you could behind you when you returned, even though you knew wonwoo was sound asleep anyways. sitting on the side of the bed, you picked up your phone from the table where it sat. 5:47am. so it was way earlier than you thought. you settled back into the blankets, glancing over to see wonwoo in the same way he was when you left. lips slightly parted, long eyelashes resting on his cheeks. he looks so content. as carefully as you can, you lift his arm up and nestle back into his body. although he seemed as though he was in deep sleep when you got back, you couldnt help but notice the arm around your waist lightly squeeze as you nuzzle your face into the crook between his neck and his shoulder.
the next couple of days went by generally the same as the past two did. visiting family, spending time with your parents, just taking time to relax and be at home. acting as a couple actually wasn’t as difficult as you expected it to be. the most you would have to do is recite the backstory you had both made up, or hold hands every now and then to look believable. it felt like no time before it the day of the wedding, and you were all getting ready to head to the wedding hall. you fought to curl your hair in the mirror, but couldnt quite reach one part in the back. this caught wonwoo’s attention, as he made it was over to you behind the mirror. you sighed, making eye contact with him in the mirror. “do you want some help? i can finish it for you.” he reached for the curling iron as you nodded. “i just cant get that one piece, does the rest look okay?” you watched as he tilted his head in concentration while he curled the last few pieces of hair on the back of your head. “turn around.” you turned to face him as he inspected your hair. he fluffed up some pieces, then moved his hands to rest on either side of your face. “it looks great.” for a second, you couldve sworn the love in his eyes was genuine. well, you knew he had love for you, but in a platonic way. but this look felt like a different type of love. before you could process anything that had happened, your mother appeared in the doorway. “oh, arent you two just beautiful?” she crossed her arms and leaned on the doorway. you both stood to face her so she could admire your dress and wonwoos suit. wonwoo had made an effort to get a tie that matched your dress. it didnt take long for your mother to notice the small sentiment as she raved about how cute it is and left to go tell your father. after close to an hour of getting ready in preparation for a wedding that wasnt even your own, you all made your way into your parents’ car and were officially enroute to the wedding.
the wedding venue was absolutely beautiful. decorated from floor to ceiling with white and gold decorations, you walked in and your jaw dropped. you admired everything as wonwoo stood by your side, also taking in all the glamour of the space. after taking the time to appreciate the decor, wonwoo lightly takes your hand and pulls you into the wedding hall, trailing behind your parents. your parents picked a seat close to the front in order to get a good view of the ceremony. with different members of your extended family surrounding you, you felt right at home. wonwoos hand never left yours from the moment you both stepped into the venue. everyone quietly spoke amongst each other as they all waited for the wedding to begin. you told wonwoo about all the family members you could see, telling him small anecdotes and childhood stories. wonwoo always seemed to be so attentive. you loved that part of him. it didnt feel like long before the music queued and the wedding party began entering the room. you watched as your aunts, uncles, cousins, and their partners all walked into the room in pairs. you began tearing up at the sight of your family all looking so proud of your cousin. wonwoo noticed, squeezing your hand and lightly running his thumb along your knuckles. you wrapped your arm around his as your cousin turned the corner. she was absolutely stunning. you looked towards the front of the room to see her soon-to-be husband in tears at the sight of her. the display of love made you cry as well. all you had wanted since you were a young child was a love like they have now. as your cousin made her way down the aisle, wonwoo silently wiped your tears and squeezed your hand yet again. you gave him a thankful smile as he put his free hand on top of your intertwined fingers.
the rest of the wedding was just as heartwarming as the beginning. more tears were shed, smiles were had, it was a beautiful experience. as the wedding party all exited the room, you sat in wonwoos presence as the guests around you broke out into a chatter about how beautiful the wedding was. in the hum of the crowd, wonwoo watched you in a silent effort to make sure you were feeling okay. you had told him in a drunken rant in the weeks preceding the wedding how much you didnt want to go home because everyone was in love and happy together, and all you had was school and friends. you reassured wonwoo that you appreciate what you have, but as he practically carried you through your apartment, he could hear the sadness and disappointment in your voice through the intoxication. he never brought this up after, but this did make him want to go to this wedding and take care of you even more. as everyone in the wedding hall began standing up and getting ready to leave, wonwoo patted your thigh gently as you both joined everyone else. your parents waited by the door for the two of you to exit through the flood of people. on the drive back, your parents had plenty to say about the newlyweds and the wedding as a whole. you chimed in occasionally, but you were perfectly content with listening to your mothers rambling uninterrupted.
when you get home, you decide to stay in the same dress you had worn for the wedding ceremony, as the wedding dance and reception were only hours later. you relax in the family room with wonwoo, watching whatever your parents had been watching on tv before you left. you sit in the same comfortable silence that you two always manage to seek out. you drape your legs across his lap as he mindlessly draws invisible patterns along your legs with his fingers. interrupting the tv show, your phone rings. hoshi? you answer the phone and put it on speaker.
“y/n!! hows it going, loverboy giving you any trouble?” wonwoo rolls his eyes at hoshis obnoxious tone, but cant help the laugh escaping his body. you flash him a teasing smile.
“no hosh, im keeping him in line, dont worry.”
“you better be, im not there to do it so i was getting worried.”
wonwoo began playfully arguing with hoshi through the phone as you hold the phone and giggle at their antics. they go on and on for a couple minutes, before wonwoo inevitably gives up. hoshis persistence is truly something to be reckoned with. hoshi has some last final parting words before abruptly ending the phone call.
“have fun lovebirds, see you soon! i dont want to be a godfather yet though!”
you both laugh at him again, letting the silence fall back into the room. before long, its time to go back to the wedding hall for the reception. you find your seats next to your parents as the food begins to be served. wonwoo spots the open bar across the room, and asks if youd like a drink. you give him a nod and hes off to grab refreshments. you dont bother with specifics, as you trust wonwoos knowledge about your taste. he comes back with two glasses, and places one on the table in front of you. smiling in acknowledgement, he gives you a nod. you listen to speeches and songs, before the meal is over and the crowd is brought to the dance floor. being a couple drinks deep so far, you try to convince wonwoo to get up and dance with you. youve always been sort of a lightweight, but you also know your limits. sometimes. wonwoo, however, doesnt have the same taste for alcohol that you do. so he has one or two, and switches to soda before he even feels the slightest bit tipsy. still trying to drag him to the dance floor, you ask wonwoo to come with you in the nicest most stable voice you could muster. he gives in, following you out and joining the many people already enjoying the dj’s music.
you both get a taxi home, as your parents arent the party animals they used to be. wonwoo tries to bring you in quietly, but youre as stable and discrete as a baby giraffe in a china shop. after managing to successfully sneak you into the bedroom without angering your parents, he closes the door as you stumble to the bed and flop back into the blankets. wonwoo hangs his suit jacket on the back of the door and begins gathering his clothes to go get changed in the bathroom. as his hand touches the doorknob, he hears distinct babbling coming from the bed behind him. he turns around to see you staring at the ceiling, and he’s unsure if youre talking to yourself or him.
“what was that?”
you turn your head towards him and smile. “youre sooo handsome woo. im just so happy that youre my fake boyfriend.”
he laughs at this sudden proclamation. he sits on the bed next to you and leans back onto his arms, gazing down at you. “you're pretty sweet too, y/n. i couldnt ask for a better fake girlfriend.”
“but you knowww…” you attempt to whisper to him, as if it was a secret to him and yourself. “i couldddd be your real girlfriend toooooooo..” you give him a gleeful smile, your eyes closed. he brushes a loose strand of hair behind your ear. “is that so?” you nod profusely as he says this. he chuckles and stands up, tapping your leg.
“youve got to get ready for bed, you cant sleep in your dress and makeup.” you sit up in a slouch, giving wonwoo a disapproving look. he puts his hand out to help you up, and you gladly take it. he brings you to the bathroom and hoists you onto the counter, shutting the door to create a barrier between your elevated drunken volume and your parents’ bedroom. he takes a makeup wipe out of its packaging as he places his hand along your neck with his thumb on your jaw, holding your face in its place. you close your eyes as the cold cloth comes into contact with your face. you shiver a little as wonwoo readjusts his grip on your face. when hes done, he pats your thigh as a signal to slide off the countertop. you jump down and try to follow him back into the bedroom, but before you leave he passes you your pajamas to get changed into. you reluctantly return back to the bathroom and try to change as carefully as you can. once you get back into the bedroom, wonwoo is in his pajamas, climbing into bed. you jaunt across the room onto your side, and as soon as wonwoo is settled in, you slowly snuggle into his side. he wraps both arms around you, wrapping you in a warm cocoon of blankets and his body. before you drift off, you mumble “love you woo” into his chest. he knows it was the drunk you speaking, but he makes sure to whisper “love you too y/n” into the quiet night.
the last morning waking up in wonwoos arms was no different from any of the other days. you try to savour this time a little bit longer, but he soon starts to stir and slowly gets out of bed. you can tell that he thought you were asleep by how carefully he was moving. when he comes back, youre sitting up in the bed on your phone. he’s taken aback, and begins to apologize for waking you up. you reassure him that you were already awake which calms his nerves. while wonwoo is in the bathroom, you begin packing your stuff back into the suitcase you brought with you. when hes ready, you switch places, now with you in the bathroom and wonwoo packing his stuff. you both decide to hit the road early, so youre not getting home tired late at night.
after saying many goodbyes to your family you're hitting the road again. after some time, wonwoo suddenly chimes in. “um, do you remember anything you said last night when we got back from the reception?” youre taken aback by the question, trying to replay every moment of the night. you shake your head. “but im definitely sorry for whatever it may have been.” you both chuckle, as wonwoo turns it over in his head, trying to decide whether or not to continue on this train of thought. “its just…” hes made his decision. “i was thinking about how people say drunk words are sober thoughts, and your drunk words said some things that i actually agree with.” at this point youve turned fully towards him in your seat, trying to figure out what he was about to say next. he takes a deep breath before continuing. “when we were getting ready for bed you said.. you said you wished that this-” he gestures between the two of you, “-wasnt fake. and ive been turning that over and over in my head because… i feel that way too.” the tips of his ears are bright red, and his grip on the steering wheel has tightened slightly. you watch as he tries to calm himself down enough to continue. you decide to let him finish before speaking. “the last few days has made me feel so happy. being around you makes my days better. you don't have to feel the same, you dont even have to say anything if you don't want to. i just.. i had to say something.” you smile at him as you place your hand lightly on his arm. now, its your turn to speak. “wonwoo, you don't understand how difficult it has been to try not to fall for you in the last week. everything you do makes my heart flutter. ive been dreading the day this whole scheme was over. i do wish this wasnt fake. i want this to be our everyday life wonwoo. i want this to be us.” his hand finds yours as a smile overtakes his face. you hold his hand in yours, not wanting to ever let go. wonwoo glances over at you. “i cant believe that the girl i met at the convenience store is finally my girlfriend after us dating for 6 months.” you laugh, letting your head rest against the car headrest as you let the quiet music from the radio fill the silence.
you should've known this fake relationship would last longer than the week you signed up for.

Beside You
Rockstar!Eddie x Reader
When your lover invites you to a wedding you didn’t know was his until you got there. Leading you to rethink your life and meeting a rockstar.
Tumblr media
She could never understand how a simple question could change a person’s world. But hearing the words “I do,” did just that and not for a good reason.
She remembers the wedding standing there as he said the words. The same words that ruined her inside and out. It happened so fast the kiss, the cheering, the dancing.
She wanted it to stop, it didn’t feel right to see him marry someone else. When she stood she had thought it over but it never came. How she would object to the wedding, how she would admit her love for him, and how he would choose her time and time again.
Yet none of that happened and none of it ever will she was simply too late. The moment she stood up she froze in place unsure of what to say or do. People stared momentarily as her internal battle raged on.
But the moment was lost as soon as it started when the kiss happened and they had something else to focus on.
It had only been a few weeks since that day and she still felt helpless. Her heart ached in anticipation that one day he would come to her and change his mind. But reality and delusion seemed to switch places in her mind. He never told her why he invited her when he was the groom and it seemed she would never know.
She wanted to disregard the wedding thinking she was made for him. That idea left her restless and unsure about what to do with her life. With an unsteady sigh she lights the cigarette in her hand as she stands on her balcony.
Her vision wavering as tears spill over skewing her vision. The sound of someone clearing their throat caused her to look over at the balcony beside her.
He was handsome big doe eyes, cherub features, and long curly brown hair. The look on his face was one of understanding rather than sympathy. She was grateful.
“What’s put you in such a foul mood, Birdy.”
Opening her mouth to speak she shook her head, “my own stupidity. Not being able to take a hint when a guy tells me he loves me yet invites me to his wedding.”
“Yikes,” he said putting his hands up in defense. “And I thought I had it bad because the cafe doesn’t have those fancy little fruit tarts. You win this round, Birdy.”
She didn’t intend to but how could she not crack a smile at his words. It was clear his attempt was to cheer her up and he did. Looking down at her cigarette she puts it out on the iron railing in front of her.
“Y/N.”
“Pretty name, looking for a last one?”
“Funny and handsome,” she said giving him a pointed look.
He winked at her before leaning over the iron railing towards her balcony, “what can I say I’m a real charmer. Though most people just call me Eddie.”
“And what do other people call you?” She asked leaning towards him.
The way the moonlight seemed to illuminate his eyes left her staring. Handsome was an understatement, he was something not yet defined by words.
“You call me lover,” he whispers to her.
Blinking she looked away to hide just how impressed she was. “I ask other people not me,” she let out in a rushed tone.
Shrugging he crosses his arms, “most people is everyone else but you.”
“That’s not how that works you’re making things up as you go, aren’t you?”
“Always, it’s how I work best.”
So lover what are you doing out here?”
Eddie was amused as he sighed dramatically, “well I was talking with this psychic. She read my palm earlier and told me I had to be on this balcony to meet this beautiful woman that needed someone to talk to. Have you seen her?”
“The beautiful woman?”
“Who?”
She rolled her eyes, “you’re lame.”
“Hey that’s no way to talk to your lover, where are your manners.”
“Oh my dearest apologies, maybe your psychic should have warned you about terrible jokes,” she replied.
Placing a hand on his chest he looked at her offended, “excuse you my jokes are amazing. Is this the thanks I get trying to cheer up a beautiful woman?”
“Who?”
“You’re so original,” he tells her with a teasing smile.
Smiling back at him she nods, “I know my jokes are amazing.”
“Our jokes, you can’t monopolize my jokes,” pointing at her Eddie gave her a warning look.
“I don’t think you used that word right.”
“Oh what you can use it better?” He asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes I can, because I have a monopoly over your jokes.”
His eyes narrowed as he looked at her, “you just said what I said.”
“No, I said it better.”
“You think you’re funny,” his smile wider as he noticed she was holding back her laughter.
“I’m very original,” she laughed out.
“I bet,” he whispered watching her laugh without hesitation. In his eyes it was beautiful to watch someone let go and enjoy themselves. She was beautiful in a way he just couldn’t put his finger on. It was unexplainable.
A yawn ripped him from his thoughts as he noticed her covering her mouth. “I think someone’s ready for bed.”
“Maybe I’m a little tired.”
Shaking his head he looked her over, “I think a little is an understatement.”
Yawning once more she nods, “maybe I should sleep then.”
“Maybe you should.”
“Well goodnight lover,” she said slowly.
“Goodnight Birdy,” he responded just as slow.
Smiling at the nickname she turned to walk back into her hotel room. “Wait!”
Stopping she looks back over at him noticing how he held some of his hair to his lips. His eyes darting around before they focus on her. “I’m having a concert this weekend and if you want, you can come.”
“I’d love to,” she smiled this time went inside of her hotel room. The second she disappeared Eddie pumped his fists in the air, “fuck yeah.” He whispered to himself before going inside of his own hotel room.

Maybe a part two or no? Idk yet I just have this want to write about the other woman trope and weddings. If I make more parts it will be slowish burn because I like to drag things out and make the reader sad, happy, frustrated, horny, delighted, angry, then in love.

A Fallout 4 Soulmate AU Hancock x Female Sole Survivor (Nora) Summary:
Hancock never thought he would find his soulmate. Once a common occurrence, soulmates turned into a bit of a rarity after the bombs dropped. It was to be expected when there was an influx of people getting shot in the face on a daily basis. So when Hancock discovered that he had a soulmate he was ecstatic; all of the people in the Commonwealth, and he was one of the lucky few.
Too bad his soulmate didn't want anything to do with him.

\\
Hancock took a steady pull of his cigarette. Perched on the rotting sill of his open office window located in Boston’s State House, he relaxed into the gentle chill of an early spring evening. Goodneighbor had gone quiet some hours ago. He would be concerned if the town’s uncharacteristic early evening if it wasn’t so pleasant. Goodneighbor going to sleep was a rarity, and he chose to enjoy the downtime with several cigarettes and a couple canisters of jet as he attempted to master the art of blowing smoke rings. He would ultimately discover, after smoking through nearly entire pack of cigarettes, that it was a feat that required an embouchure that he didn’t have the lips for — or he was too fucking stoned to do it right.
Flicking the still smoldering butt out into the night, Hancock returned to one of the two limp couches in his designated office space, and flopped down. He reached for the mentats tin on the rubbish-covered coffee table. Why not end the night on a high note?
Hancock snickered to himself, amused at his own drug addled thoughts, “On’a high note.” Because he was high. Ha-ha.
He fumbled with the old tin, eventually managing to lodge the blunt end of his thumbnail into the lip of the lid. The little tin box opened with a satisfying pop. He placed one of the white tablets on his tongue. It immediately began to dissolve, coating his tongue in chalky grit. When he eventually swallowed he was already feeling pleasantly fuzzy. The tingling was in his toes, his fingers. It danced along his teeth and the grooves of his brain. The ghoul sank further into the couch, glossy black eyes staring up at the ceiling, his mouth ajar as his thoughts stumbled from one to the next. He thought about starting a community garden; it would be tucked away from the main thoroughfare but still sizable. He remembered and clung to an old poem from an old book he had stashed away in his desk. He pondered the essence of the whole fucking cosmos. Or perhaps not, actually. He was blitzed and keeping his thoughts in line was becoming more, and more difficult.
When he started to hear whispers he thought nothing of it. On a livelier night he would have assumed that it was regular ol’ street noise. In the uncharacteristic silence of the night he figured it was a hallucination. This wasn’t his first rodeo. He’d experienced visual and auditory hallucinations before. They weren’t typically triggered by mere mentats, mind you, but it had been a long and drug-fueled day and he was content with riding the wave until he crashed.
The whispers belonged to one person. It started as a weak, warbling, like he was hearing someone talk from behind a closed door. Then the voice abruptly grew in volume; suddenly shrill, like he was standing next to a woman as she screamed for all she was worth.
“Nate! No, Nate, please! Honey, please wake up!”
The ghoul’s brows furrowed. The voice was frantic, desperate as she cried for help.  Phantom hands — smooth, delicate, small — swam in and out of his vision. They moved in front of him as if they were his. The vision ebbed when he tried to divert his attention; it went beyond superimposition when he focused on it. Hancock could feel the sensation of the blood stained Vault-tec jumpsuit chafe under his palms as smooth hands gripped and pulled at the material. He was peering up at the face of a dead man, his body heavy and limp, slumped in some sort of pod that reminded him of Goodneighor’s Memory Den.
“Nate! Please — please don’t do this! NATHAN!”
He’s dead. He’s gone. Fuck, if his heart wasn’t breaking. It was shattering into millions of pieces, leaving him more numb and empty than he had ever felt. And goddamn, it felt fucking real. As real as the jumpsuit under his palms, as real as the chill that had sank into his bones, as real as the couch he still lounged in.
A sudden hand on his arm made his body jolt. The vision of the dead man was abruptly ripped from him and in its place was Fahrenheit’s stern face. She was blurry, swimming in a lake of wavering tears. He was crying. Fuck, he was sobbing. His shoulders heaved, his lungs hungrily taking in air in short, frantic gulps. For all of a moment, Fahrenheit looked on the brink of amusement. Her right eyebrow was curled upward and the corner of her mouth was lifting into a smirk as she readied to deliver some snide remark, but then her expression changed. The almost-smirk vanished, the haughty brow lowered, and then a look of awe lit her features. Hancock sniffled, the tears that had been cascading down his ruined cheeks came to an abrupt stop as if the well had run dry. The ache in his chest was gone. So was the dead man in the pod. So was the frantic, begging, voice. He blinked. He took one more big gasp for air to steady himself but it was shaky. He was shaking.
“S-sorry,” he rasped. His voice was weak and frail at the edges. He cleared his throat. “Sorry. That was, uh— that—”
Though he wanted to blame it all on the chems, he knew that that wasn’t the case. That was something else. Something he never thought he would experience in all of his lifetime. For some goddamn reason, the Powers That Be decided to gift Hancock with a soulmate. He was shocked. He was elated.
Fahrenheit’s voice was barely audible when she said, “You found them.”
“It’s a woman.”
“What does she look like? What’s her name? Where is she?”
Soulmates were a rarity these days, because that’s what happened when nuclear bombs fell and annihilated the majority of the world's population. Fahrenheit was still missing her signature scowl. It made him uncomfortable. Hancock shook his head, reaching for his smokes that were in the breast pocket of his coat — anything to stop the shaking of his hands.
“I dunno. It’s exactly how they say. Y'see through their eyes. All I saw was her hands. And I heard her voice.”
“Whose Nate?” When Hancock glanced at Fahrenheit she added, “You were saying his name.”
There was no way for Hancock to know who Nate was, and yet he did. Hancock knew exactly who Nate was. Nate was his soulmate’s dead husband. Hancock swore, chucking the pack of cigarettes to the floor in a fit of irritation. So much for that high he had been riding. Coming out of the vision, he felt debilitatingly sober. Leave it to the universe to give him one of the best gifts anyone could ever receive, and then somehow make it completely awful.
Fuck you, too, universe. Fuck. You. Too.

Cricket. Polo. The real football.
There were many popular sports in England, but the downfall of all of those was the fact that they were all at the mercy of the weather. That was why, in your humble opinion, the best sport in the world was bowling.
You were fully aware that the rest of the world definitely didn’t consider it a real sport, and that was fine. But to you, it was the best. No other sport could be enjoyed by 4 year olds and 94 year olds at the same time, all while having full access to a pitcher of beer and never being rained out. Nor did any other sport create friendships so instantly while in good natured competition. It certainly had for you.
You, the army brat, who had moved every year and always ended up being the new kid with the accent different from everyone else’s, had always found common ground in whatever bowling alley had been closest to base. Bowling was its own language, its own gateway into other people’s lives. When you’d finally stayed somewhere for more than two years when you were in high school, you’d made yourself a fixture at the lanes. You stayed in England for college – no, university – and worked your way through every beer league and youth camp you could. The bowling alley was your home, and you ended up staying even after your father retired from the army and returned to his hometown with your mother. Your place was here, behind the counter and coaching leagues.
It was a shallowly connected life. You had a few friends from your own league, as well as your coworkers, and some regulars that you absolutely loved, but mainly, you saw people for five minutes while they paid and figured out which size their rental shoes needed to be before they went to the lanes and you watched from a distance, telling yourself that it was fine.
One day, and especially lonely one, you were scheduled to work a children’s party. You were slightly hung over from the pitcher you’d shared at your league the night prior, and weren’t looking forward to all of the noise that children would inevitably cause. Taking a preemptive Excedrin, you pulled up your hair and braced for the worst.
The birthday child was a blonde girl who was all smiles, leading seven little friends and their adults behind them. You plastered on your best customer service smile and got through the chaos of check in, shoes, snack bar follow up, and lane assignments, then collapsed in your chair to stare into space for a while, until someone needed you.
The respite was brutally short.
You didn’t notice at first, but eventually you realized that you had somebody standing at the side of the counter. It was because of his shirt. Anywhere else, it would have stood out obnoxiously, but the red, orange, and yellow tie dye blended into the colorful walls. You turned quickly once you realized he was there.
“Sorry, I zoned out,” you blurted. “How can I help you, sir?”
The man – you recognized him from somewhere, you realized, but you couldn’t place where – startled at how quickly you acknowledged him. He had very expressive eyebrows, which shot up his forehead in surprise. He pointed at the lanes where the blonde girl’s group was bowling and grunted, “One of the little shits that my niece is friends with threw a ball right after another kid and hit the thing that pushes the pins out of the way, and now it won’t go back up. Can you fix it so their days won’t be ruined?”
You couldn’t tell if her was mad at the lane or at you; it seemed like he was angry in general, judging by the deep creases between his eyebrows. Best to take a cautious approach with him.
“I can’t fix it, but I can call the tech. Just a second.” You grabbed the intercom, but didn’t click it on. “It’s the gate on 15, yeah?”
“The what?”
“The black sweepy thing, on Lane 15?”
“Oh. Yeah.”
Quickly, you called out, “Pete, I need a gate reset on Lane 15, please” over the speakers. Then you turned back to the tie dye man.
“Cheers,” he said. “Phoebe will be happy now.”
“That’s your niece? The blonde girl?”
He nodded. “Yep, that idiot.” He smiled and waved toward Phoebe, who was trying to get his attention. “She made me this shirt. I wouldn’t have picked it, but she made it, so I wear it to all her things.”
“It’s a good look. Matches the décor here,” you teased. “I almost didn’t see you, and you were right in front of me.”
A grunt was the only response you got. Fearing you’d been rude, you cleared your throat and continued. “Well. I’ll be here for the rest of the day, if you guys need anything else. You know where to find me.”
Another grunt, and eyebrow guy was gone, leaving you to put your head on the counter in embarrassment. That was so awkward!
You stewed in your awkwardness for another half an hour; nobody else came in to distract you. Distraction didn’t come until you got a call from the snack bar, signaling that they needed you to run the pizza to Phoebe’s group. Inwardly groaning, you picked up the tray and a stack of plates, and expertly balanced them as you walked to Lane 15. Phoebe and her friends were excited to see you, and their enthusiasm evaporated some of your self-pity. These seemed to be good kids.
“Okay,” you said, putting your hands on your hips and leaning down conspiratorially, “I only have two rules for you. Rule Number One: No pizza or drinks on the approach. Rule Number Two: I don’t want to see any pizza fingers in those balls, because someone will have to clean them.” You pointed at yourself as you said “someone,” which made all the kids laugh. “And Rule Number Three-”
“You said there were only two!” interrupted a young boy. Tie dye guy glared at him.
“Well, I lied,” you shrugged. That got a laugh from everybody. “Rule Number Three: Help Phoebe have a happy birthday!”
All of the kids cheered. Satisfied, you walked over to their grown-ups. “If you guys need anything, I’m Splits.” You tapped your nametag, bearing the kitschy bowling nickname that the manager had made you pick. “I’ll be at the counter.”
Your nickname drew a few chuckles and sympathetic smiles. One of the younger adults, who you also recognized in addition Phoebe's uncle, fixed you with a flirty look.
“Do they call yah that because you can do the splits, or…?”
“No, because I leave plenty on the lanes.”
He looked like he was trying to come up with another quip, but Phoebe’s uncle elbowed him in the ribs. “Shut up, Jamie. Not everyone loves you.”
Jamie, unperturbed, elbowed him back. “Whatever, Coach. It was worth trying. Sorry, Splits.”
You realized where you had seen him before. AFC Richmond was the local football club, and the young man was none other than Jamie Tartt. And now that you had figured out who he was, you had to ask, no matter how much it pained you…
“Can I get a quick photo? The owner likes us to whenever we have a celebrity guest.”
Jamie’s chest puffed out before he looked at tie dye man; you got the feeling his coach had lectured him before about showboating. “Sure, yeah, if that’s how it’s done here.” He checked his hair and grabbed a bowling ball. “Where do you want meh?”
“Uncle Roy should be in the picture, too!” piped Phoebe, shooting her uncle a pout. “He’s more famous that Jamie!”
The man you’d talked to at the counter, who you recognized but didn’t know where from, was named Roy? And Jamie had called him “coach?” Was he Roy Kent? How had you not realized?
It had to be the tie dye. Had to be.
“Fuck no, I’m not getting in a picture with that prick.”
“Please, Uncle Roy?” pleaded Phoebe. “It is my birthday.”
A grunt. You were beginning to think that they were his primary language, in combination with swearing. Roy Kent stood up, rolled his eyes, and got next to Jamie Tartt, glowering.
You reached into your back pocket and took out your phone to check how things looked. Bowling alley lighting was never great, but it was especially bad today. Jamie popped, because of course he did, but Roy melted into the wall, his obnoxious shirt effectively camouflaging him.
Thinking quickly, you went to the racks, grabbed a bright blue bowling ball, and brought it to Roy. He just stared at it.
“And what am I supposed to do with this? Throw a fucking strike on camera?”
“No, I just need you to hold it,” you huffed. “The camera can’t see you; your shirt blends in too much. Just take this, please, and this can be over.”
Without giving him a choice, you pushed the bowling ball against his arm. He took it awkwardly, his fingers brushing yours. You thought he shrank into his shoulders after that, but it could have just been him settling the weight of the ball, so you couldn’t be sure.
You took the picture and sent it to your manager, who started freaking out and texting a sentence at a time, but you retreated back to your counter after that. The rest of the afternoon went quietly. Phoebe’s party ended, and you watched as Roy and Jamie gathered all of the kids’ rental shoes and brought them up to you to return.
Sorry for flirting with yah earlier,” said Jamie, dumping an armful of footwear. “Old habits and all that.”
“It’s no problem,” you replied.
He gave you a wink and sauntered off. Then Roy deposited all of the shoes he was carrying.
“Thanks for being cool. Phoebe enjoyed it.”
“My pleasure. Sorry for the picture.”
“It happens. People are weird about fame.”
“Sorry all the same. Hopefully it wasn’t too awkward.”
Roy Kent wouldn’t look at you, and instead focused on a spot on the counter. Then he gave a last grunt and walked away, sticking out a hand to hold Phoebe’s. You watched them leave before grabbing a bottle of disinfectant to spray down the shoes. As you did, you mused that, for being a football manager and a player before that, Roy Kent was really awkward when it came to being recognized.
The sound of running feet tore your attention away from your thoughts. You looked up, ready to shout at some kids for horseplay, but it was Phoebe, running back to the lanes and grabbing a jumper that she had left. Then she jogged back to the desk, stopping on the way out.
“I had a really fun time,” she said.
“I’m glad,” you replied warmly. “I hope to see you come back.”
Phoebe smiled. “I think I will. I overheard Uncle Roy telling Jamie that he shouldn’t call strangers ‘fit,’ even if they are, and I think they were talking about you. Bye!”
She pranced off to rejoin her uncle where he was waiting for her at the exit, taking his hand once more. You could see them talking, and something she said made him look up abashedly at you. He held your gaze for just a moment, then threw Phoebe over his shoulder and stomped away. You had the rest of the night to ponder the fact that Jamie Tartt and maybe Roy Kent had considered you attractive. It made up for the awkwardness of the photo. Almost.

“Why are you so loud?” You asked from the entryway to the living room. Hands on your hips and a scowl on your face as you glared at one of the two super soldiers that didn’t know what whispering meant.
“We are talking names.”
“Talking or yelling?”
“I made coffee.” Bucky says as he stands in front of you, trying to change the subject. “Do you want some?”
You were about to respond when giggles interrupted you. The sweet little giggles of none other than Angel. Leaning to the side to look behind Bucky you find Steve sitting on the floor, holding her hands as she stands in front of him. She was trying to find her balance but anytime Steve let go of her hands she’d fall down. She laughed again when her bottom hit the soft area rug in your living room.
“Well now you’re just being silly.” Steve told her as he picked the giggling toddler up and had her stand looking in your direction. “Who’s that sweetheart?”
Her eyes lit up when she saw you and she immediately stretched her arms out so that you would pick her up.
“Good morning cutie, how are you doing today?”
“I’m great, how are you?” Steve responded as you picked Angel up. You rolled your eyes before kissing her temple. Angel lays her head on your shoulder.
“I’m not dealing with you until I’ve had my coffee, Rogers.”
“Wow, you really are a grump in the mornings. Anyways, let me make breakfast now that you’re up.”
You narrow your eyes at him and Bucky does the same from behind you. Steve gives you an awkward smile as he walks past. Both you and Bucky follow him to the kitchen.
“You rarely make me any food. What’s going on?”
“Yeah punk, What’s up with you?”
“I tried to keep you out as long as I could but I need you for a mission Y/N. Two days tops.” He says after turning to look at you.
You frown slightly before looking between Bucky and Angel, your hold tightening slightly on the latter.
“I’ll go.” Bucky offers.
“Sorry Buck but we need her abilities.”
“It’s ok, It’s my job.” You say as you turn to him and smile. “Who else is going?”
“Nat, Sam and Clint.”
“Good, you can both watch this sweet girl.” You say you pull back and look at her. Your voice gets higher when you talk to her. “Are you going to have so much fun with Steve and daddy?”
Bucky stiffened slightly at being called dad.  You look up at him slightly embarrassed.
“I’m sorry I didn’t mean-“
“No it’s ok, I’ll get used to it.” He says in a small voice.
“She can call you something else.”
“No it’s ok really. She can call me dad if she wants to.”
“And what do we call her? You said you were talking about names.”
Steve turns back around and starts pulling ingredients out of the fridge and cabinets.
“Well let’s see,” Bucky says as he pulls a small notebook out of his sweatpants pocket. “I have Beatrice, Eleanor, Josephine, Lydia, Frances and Vivian. What do you think?”
“You know you only have to pick one, maybe two.”
“You don’t like any of them?”
You gave him an awkward smile as you moved to set Angel down in her booster seat.
“Well, she is your daughter so you get to choose. They’re lovely names, she just doesn’t look like those names.”
“What is that supposed to mean?” Steve asked from the stove.
“It means you look like a Steve, Bucky looks like a Bucky and I look like a Y/N. The name has to fit her.”
Bucky hummed and then frowned slightly. He never thought a name could be so complicated.
“Is there a name you like?”
“Not any of those.” You mutter under your breath.
“I heard that.”
“Oops.” You said with a smile.
“Agent Y/LN, your presence is being requested in conference room 302.” Friday announced.
“Is it urgent Friday?”
“Yes, your mission has been moved up, you’re needed in order to start the briefing.”
“Please let them know I’ll be down in 10 minutes.”
“Yes ma’am.”
You kiss Angel’s forehead and head to your room to change out of your pajamas.
“Ok , hopefully I’ll see you before I leave. Sorry I can’t have breakfast Steve.”
“I’ll make you some when you get back from the mission.” He smiles at you.
“I’ll hold you to it.” You head toward the living room with Bucky following close behind.
“If you have to leave right after please be careful.”
“I will,” you kiss his cheek. “If you need help with Angel, Jenna and Ivy in the medical wing can help.” You say before you head out.

The jet was ready to go. The team of four had packed up everything they would need for the two day trip and set it by the ramp of said jet. While Clint and Sam did some preflight checks Nat stood by you as you said goodbye to sweet Baby Barnes as she clung to you unaware that she wouldn’t see you for at least two days. Her little fingers played with the straps of your Kevlar vest and she pursed her lips as she concentrated with the task at hand. Bucky and Steve walked your way as you and Nat discussed something about the mission.
“Did you pick a name yet?” Is the first question you asked once Bucky stood in front of you.
“No,” he shook his head slightly as he looked at the small notebook in his hand. “This is a big deal, I can’t name her something stupid.”
“Samantha is a good name.” Sam calls out as he picks up your bags.
“Again, I said nothing stupid.”
“Wow, you talk like that in front of your daughter? You’re lucky she’ll learn her manners from Y/N.”
Nat and you chuckled at the banter but Steve pinched the bridge of his nose already exasperated with the back and forth.
“Come on You’re not even close to picking a name yet? What if I leave and never come back?” You meant it as a joke but the mood shifted quickly.
Steve took Angel from you after you placed a quick kiss on her forehead. Nat said her own quick goodbye before getting on the jet leaving you alone with Bucky. His expression was unreadable as he looked toward his daughter.
“Don’t say things like that.”
“It was just a joke, Buck.”
“Well it wasn’t funny.” He finally looked at you, finding you looking away. “I’m sorry I just- the thought of losing you is unbearable. Besides, I need you.”
Your eyes snapped up meeting his.
“And so does Joann.” You grimace at the name. “Yeah, I didn't think so either.” He scratches the name off the list with a pen. “I’ll have a name by the time you get back ok?”
“Ok, take care of yourself while I’m gone.” You say as you wrap your arms around his waist.
“What about Angel?”
“If you take care of her the way you take care of me I know she’ll be fine. Just don’t forget her-“
“Pink bear, I know. And I already spoke with Jenna and Ivy although I’m gonna do as much as I can on my own.” Bucky finishes your sentence as he wraps an arm around your shoulder. He places a kiss in your hair. “Please be careful.”
“I will. See you in two days.”
You walk up the ramp with a final wave to the three of them. Clint hits the button to close the jet as you begin to hear Angel cry. Clint stands besides you as you look through one of the windows at Steve trying to calm her down.
“Trust me kid, it doesn’t get easier.” He pats your back before turning to the cockpit.
Tumblr media
“It’s ok sweetheart, mama will be back soon.” Steve cooed softly as if his words were meant for her ears only. It didn’t work though and Angel held her arms out and made grabby hands in hopes that you would appear before her and take her into your arms, where she was safe. When that didn’t work she turned to Bucky.
”Don’t cry,” Bucky tells her as he takes her from Steve. “I’m scared too. But you know what? We’re going to be just fine.”
He heads back into the living section of the compound and up to your apartment where you left everything set up for him. Steve followed closely behind making silly faces at the crying child in hopes of calming her down. The only thing that worked was actually being back in your apartment. It was familiar to her and she was safe. It didn’t take long for her to start yawning and rubbing her eyes, a clear sign it was time for her nap. Steve was gone and it was up to Bucky to get the tired toddler down for said nap. He walked to the room you’d chosen for her and pulled out his phone to play some music in hope it would help Angel fall asleep.
A slow song from the 40s fills the room and Bucky hums along as he sways from side to side. Angel slowly but surely rested her head against his shoulder.
“What about Loretta?” He peaks down at the child in his arms but she’s still fighting sleep. “No, not that one. Hhmm, Norma? Nah, I don’t like that one.” Bucky continued to list names and sway around the room until Angel finally fell asleep. He laid her down in the crib and covered her with the pink blanket before heading back out into the living room.
He plopped down on your couch and as he looked around the room, Bucky couldn’t help but think of what it would be like if you and him were in a relationship. He practically lived in your apartment anyway and now so did his daughter. Up until this point you had stepped up to help care for her. It’s something you didn’t need to do and yet all the conversations he’d had with Steve about you having feelings for him came back. Bucky didn’t doubt that you would offer help to anyone, especially a child that needed it but he couldn’t deny that the way you took care of his daughter was different. It was as if she was your own and that warmed his heart, because Angel trusted you more than anyone.
So with thoughts of you and his daughter Bucky relaxed into the couch and soon enough he fell asleep too.
Tumblr media
Bucky sat up panting and disoriented. He hadn’t had a nightmare yet he could hear crying. It was the most bloodcurdling scream he’d ever heard. He looked around to realize he was in your apartment and at the sight of a doll on your couch he remembered he had put his daughter down for a nap. It was her cries that woke him up and he ran toward her room thinking someone was hurting her. He was somewhat correct. She was being hurt but only by her nightmares. She laid in the crib tossing and turning and crying bloody murder. Bucky panicked, unsure of what to do. He kept muttering to himself what would you do in this situation, if it were you here instead of him. Then he thought back to all the times he’d shown up to your place after a nightmare. He was always comforted by your touch, maybe he could provide the same for her.
Bucky bent over the railing of the crib and as gently as he could he grabbed Angel and laid her against his chest. His heart stopped when he watched her flinch at his touch but he knew it was just because of the nightmare.
“You’re ok, doll. I’m right here. I’ll keep you safe.” He cooed softly as he walked out to the living room again.
Her eyes didn’t open but her cries died down a bit. Still a small whimper here and there, a little tremble of her chin and lower lip kept him on edge.
“C’mon doll you gotta wake up for me.” He used his left hand to wipe away the tears, hoping the cool metal would maybe soothe the crying toddler. Bucky kept his eyes on her face the entire time. He studied every movement and twitch until Angel’s eyes started to flutter and finally she looked at him. She hides her face in his chest and Bucky can feel the fresh tears being soaked up by his shirt. As long as she’s awake Bucky doesn’t mind one bit. He just holds her close while he rubs soothing circles on her back and finally allows himself to calm his own heart, it’s a miracle it didn’t pop out of his chest.
When Bucky finally moves her away from his chest to get a good look at her his heart drops. She’s almost frozen in place. Angel’s gaze is unfocused and it’s as if she’s reliving something traumatic. His little girl starts to cry again and it would be several hours before he gets her to calm down.
Tumblr media
Fresh air and sunshine. Bucky had decided that his daughter hadn’t had enough of it. So once he managed to feed her and change her diaper, with the help of Jenna, he decided to go on a walk. It was supposed to be simple. Take the stroller and sit Angel down. Except he couldn’t get the stupid stroller opened, he didn’t even know that was a thing. So he stood by Steve’s office with a closed stroller, a toddler and a bag with some extras in it, in hopes that his best friend could help him out.
Steve couldn’t.
It wasn’t until another agent walked by with some documents meant for Steve that they learned how to unfold the damned thing. He quickly showed them how to open and close the stroller before walking back the way he came.
With Angel strapped in, Bucky moved through the halls of the compound until he was finally outside. Bucky could see Angel’s head move from side to side as she took in everything around her. It was nothing special but he was sure she had never been outside in her short life. So trees and flowers and grass seemed like the most amazing things in the eyes of the three year old. Bucky pushed the stroller around for a while until he found a nice shady tree to sit under. He pulled out a blanket he had brought with him and laid it out before unbuckling his daughter and setting her down.
“Ok doll, C’mere.” After he settled down he opened the backpack he had packed and pulled out a book. He sat her down in his lap and flipped the book open and he began to read out loud.
Tumblr media
You had left little post-it notes here and there to help Bucky. A list of favorite snacks on the fridge, her nap times and favorite toys in her room. In the bathroom mirror there was a post-it of what temperature the water should be and what products he should use when it was bath time. Anytime he found one he reminded himself to do something special as a thank you when you got back.
After giving his daughter a bath Bucky had grabbed her towel and wrapped her up before heading to her room. He opened the drawer you had mentioned that was full of pajamas and grabbed the first onesie and pajama pants he found.
“Ok doll, let’s get you nice and dry and ready for bed.” Bucky said as he laid his sweet Angel down, dried her properly and put on a diaper.
He reached over and grabbed the onesie and unfolded it, laughing once he realized what it said. A big you can do it dad sat in the middle in bold black letters while arrows labeled arms, head, legs and snap  surrounded it. Once he was done dressing her he took his phone out and managed to get a picture of her smiling to show you later. He had done that a lot during the day, taking pictures of her. Bucky justified it by saying they were for your benefit. Surely you’d miss her and would want to know what she was up to for two days.
This routine would happen for not two days but four. And everyday Bucky got more anxious at the fact that you weren’t back yet.
Tumblr media
Everyone had been on high alert at the end of the second day of your mission. There should have been communication that the mission had been completed and you were on your way back. Instead they were met with radio silence. Tony tried to locate all four phones but nothing. The jet couldn’t be located either.
It wasn’t until the early morning of the fifth day when a commotion at the gated entrance of the compound that the rest of the team knew something went horribly wrong. Tony, Bruce, Wanda, Vision, Steve and Bucky, along with medical staff were all waiting once the ambulance was allowed in. Clint hopped out of the driver's side and rushed to the back to open the doors. It wasn’t a surprise to see him battered and bruised. The medical team rushed after him and took over whatever was happening. Bucky’s heart all but stopped once he saw Clint, Sam and Nat walk around the ambulance and towards the rest of the group. They all looked bad but they could walk.
“Nat?” Bucky called out her name but she refused to look up at him. She felt guilty, he was sure of that. “Nat, what’s going-“ the words died on his tongue as the stretcher was finally pulled out.
You were unconscious as they wheeled you by. There was blood not only on your uniform but on the stretcher, it was too much blood. Bucky could see the gunshot wounds and the cuts and scrapes before noticing the piece of shrapnel sticking out from your side. He didn’t realize he had started following you until he stopped in his tracks and turned to look at the other three. He was furious, why were you the only one on the verge of death while the three of them seemed completely fine by comparison. Steve stepped between Bucky and the rest of the team that had gone on the mission. It was clear to see that Bucky was ready to rip their heads off.
“Walk it off, and go get your daughter.”
“But-“
“No buts, we don’t know what happened and they need to be checked out too. Once I talk to them I’ll let you know, now go.” Steve was stern and unmoving even Bucky tried to look around him. With a huff Bucky turned back in the direction of the building and disappeared inside.
“Steve, it all happened so fast.” Sam offered but Steve put his hand up.
“Go get checked out and cleaned up, we'll talk later.”
Sam’s shoulders sag as he started walking away. It was obvious that whatever happened was difficult for everyone and the last thing they needed was to get yelled at. Steve and the others knew it would be a long day and they decided to keep them company or wait to hear news about you.
Tumblr media
Bucky sat in the waiting room with Angel in his lap for hours. He wouldn’t move until he knew you were at least ok. That you would live to see another day but the doctors were taking forever. The rest of the team had been in and out waiting to hear anything but Bucky’s mood kept them at bay. After a while Steve finally showed up and silently took the toddler from Bucky.
“So what happened?”
“It was a setup from the beginning. The minute they got into enemy airspace the jet was under attack.”
“Why didn’t they call for backup or turn around and come back?”
“They were being attacked from all sides, signals were jammed. The jet was lost, the only reason any of them are still alive was because Y/N managed to slow down the descent of the plane.” Steve said as he bounced Angel on his leg.
Bucky stood and began pacing. All he wanted was for you to be ok and then to find the assholes that did this.
“There’s more,” Steve said, causing Bucky to stop and turn to him, he waited silently for the rest. “It seems like hydra planned this hoping to capture whoever had been sent on the mission with the intention of trading them.”
“Trading them? For what?”
Steve didn’t say anything, instead his hold tightened a little around the toddler on his lap and his eyes shifted from Bucky to Angel. The sound of whirling plates could be heard in the otherwise quiet room as Bucky clenched his fist.
“Over my dead body.” Bucky said through gritted teeth.
“Apparently over Y/N’s too.” Steve sighed. “Listen, from what Sam, Nat and Clint said there was nothing they could do. They fought as hard as they could and they even had to steal a plane to get back. It was Y/N that saved them and in the process she got hurt. But she’s here now and in the cradle, I’m sure she’ll be fine.”
“I hope so.”
A few minutes later Dr. Cho appears in the waiting room with news that you’re out of the cradle. Dr. Cho had said that you would be fine, after being in the cradle for that long you were sure to recover in no time but she wasn’t going to clear you for missions for a while.
She leads Bucky and Steve to your room and gives them some privacy. Bucky holds his daughter in one hand and opens the door slowly with the other. He was surprised to see you alert although it seemed you were moving slowly. Most likely due to the pain medication they had given you. Before anyone was able to say anything, Angel’s gaze fell on you. Bucky could tell something was wrong immediately due to how her body tensed and shortly after she began to cry. It was an intense, deafening type of cry that left them rooted in place. Steve quickly grabbed her and muttered that he’d stay outside to calm her down. You frowned, concerned at what could have happened.
“What’s wrong?”
“She’ll be ok.” Bucky said as he moved to sit next to you. “It’s the second time I’ve heard her cry like that though.”
“You should go check on her, I’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course.”
“Ok.” He got up and kissed your forehead before walking back out. Even in the state you were in whatever was going on with Angel had you worried. You tried to fight off the need to sleep but whatever you had been given was stronger.
It must have been very late when you did finally wake up but you weren’t surprised to find Bucky sitting in the chair beside you. A book in his hand as he patiently waited for you.
“Buck.” You called out with a slightly gravelly voice.
“Hey, how are you feeling?”
“Like shit.” You huffed out as you tried to sit up. Bucky moved to help you get more comfortable in the bed. “How’s Angel?”
“She’s better now. I’m not sure what’s going on but Bruce said he’d run some tests.”
“Ok, good.” You frown slightly at the thought of her being hurt in some way or her being afraid of you.
“I have pictures of what we did these last few days. Wanna see them?” He asked in the hopes of distracting you for a while.
You nodded as Bucky pulled out his phone. The frown disappears from your face instantly as you scroll through the pictures. Bucky had taken pictures of her outside sitting on a blanket, multiple pictures of her sleeping soundly or with food all over her face. There were videos of her just giggling as she stood on her own and videos of her with Steve while he danced and sang along with Disney movies. It warmed your heart to see her so content and safe in the arms of her father.
“Told you you’d do a good job.”
“I know, but she missed you too. She kept pointing at your room almost silently asking for me to go get you.”
“Sweet baby, I hope she’ll let me hold her once I’m out.”
“I’m sure she will.” He smiles at you.
“So…”
“So what?” He gave you a confused look.
“What is her name? Please tell me you picked something.”
He smiles again and nods. “I did.”
“Ok and what is it?” You ask excitedly and he smiles.
“Charlotte Elise Barnes.”

The Red Right Hand [Rugan & OC]
Chapter 4: Catharsis
So, we have an introduction to my version of the Gate's Zhents in this chapter. Little nervous about so many NPC's but I'm game if you guys are! :D
When Trip excitedly bounded over with the dog in tow, Yvie couldn’t help but back herself up against the wagon. Dogs were not allowed within the city gates unless they were caged, and though there were some who tried to circumvent the rule, Yvie had never really been around one before, and it really was a big dog. Danny nudged her in the ribs, apparently amused enough to be grinning his ass off at her reaction.
“Seriously? All the shit I’ve seen you do so far and you’re scared of a puppy?”
As much as she would have loved to kick the half elf in the shins right then, she sort of saw his point, and she forced herself to bend at the knees as Trip made introductions. Remaining perfectly still while still being a little nervous, she allowed the dog to sniff her all over, squirming a little when it licked her ear. When its broad muzzle butted under her hands she gave in and risked scratching it behind the ear, watching the wild pendulum of its tail. Trip seemed particularly pleased with the results when she scrambled back onto the wagon, giving the dog a signal that had him leaping up to join her.
“All right you lot, we’re aiming to hit the Field of Bones before it gets dark so let's get moving. Danny you’re up front with me, Marnae, Omari, You’ll take the middle wagon. Yvie you’re with Trip and Roman in the supply wagon.”

The Grocery Store
The grocery store is… noisy even though it’s empty. The chattering of the managers two aisles over, the sound of Seth racing like an eight year old up and down the aisles. Seth practically blurs past him and when he’s back he’s dumping a six pack of Bang Energy into his basket, crushing the bread.
Seth, the fucking speedster, is just about to race off again, but Jacob is faster, yanking him from his hoodie.
“Put this back.” Jacob says sharply, pulling out the six pack.
“C’mon!” Seth’s voice has a whining edge to it, “I was planning on playing Fortnite with my friends tonight! It’s a Friday!”
Jacob sighs, usually he wouldn’t acquiesce, but the overhead light is buzzing and the sound is drilling into his skull like it was the United States and his brain was oil.
“Seth. Work with me here, it’s a no.”
“I even have money!”
Jacob blinks, furrows his brow, “What money?”
“It’s the, uh, 20 dollars you said you owed me when you forgot it was my birthday!”
He did not forget. He very much did not forget.
Seth must have taken Jacob’s dazed silence as a resolute no.
“Okay then well uh– Dad owes me money!”
Jacob sighs through his nose, when he inhales the air is cloying and sticky–too much. He pinches his brow. He hates that Seth can see his technique working.
“Will it get you to shut up?” Jacob grumbles.
Seth is giving him the biggest sparkling puppy-dog eyes, like he didn’t just crush Jacob’s bread.
There’s a beat of silence, “Fine. But go get a cart first.”
Seth hisses his cheer like Jacob didn’t hear him– and usually Jacob wouldn’t, but he seems to hear everything. He replaces the crushed bread with a better looking loaf, scans the rest of the aisle for jam and peanut butter.
Jacob feels someone practically glide next to him, glide close, cold like they stepped out of a cryo chamber. They smell familiar– they smell nice, they’re too close. Jacob backs up, every sense in him honing on the figure.
“Here, you wanted jam.” His voice cuts through the dissonant symphony of his senses, and Jacob is blinking blankly at him.
“Huh?”
“Jam.” It’s a young man. He looks shockingly familiar, “Peanut butter too, right?”
“Right…” Jacob says, “was I… was I speaking aloud?”
His eyes are golden, last time Jacob checked his eyes were jet black.
“Hm…” The young man says thoughtfully, “Not currently, no.”
Right, because this one could read minds. His voice hooks on a memory, far far off in his mind.
“Edward Cullen.” Jacob says aloud, and Edward nods his head like he’s doing a curtsy, his mouth making a little smirk.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Jacob says, recoiling, he’s tempted to slap the jar out of Edward’s hand.
“Grocery shopping, like you.”
“Bloodsuckers don’t eat.” Jacob says. Edward’s sudden presence ticked the switch of ire in him. Last time Jacob saw him, Edward was covered in blood, wiping his mouth, licking his lips.
Edward makes a face, rolls his eyes, “Common misconception. We don’t need to. Doesn’t make eating less pleasurable.”
Bull-shit!
“I assure you, Mr. Black– it is not.”
“Don’t fucking do that.” Jacob says. When Jacob gets a proper look at Edward, he’s taller, all marble cut with those familiar golden eyes and the copper quiff of hair. He looks the same as when Jacob saw him last, but different– worldly. Or at least better dressed.
He smells nice. He looks nice. Fuck. That can’t be normal.
“I can assure you.” Edward says, voice languid, almost teasing, “That it is. It’s called attraction.”
“Fuck off.” Jacob says. It would be a bad idea to start a fight here, especially since he can’t take on Vampires alone and Seth is with him–
“Relax.” Edward smells like vanilla perfume and musk, it rolls off him in waves. “You and your brother are safe.”
“How many?” Jacob demands through grit teeth.
“None– well, one.” Edward says, and he has the audacity to act sheepish, “Me.”
“Stop. Stop doing that.” Jacob says again, he shakes his head, swallowing, “You reek.”
“No good to lie to anybody.” Edward says, “Least of all to yourself.”
“Oh.” Jacob scoffs, “Like how you convince this whole town that you’re human?”
“Now Mr. Black. There’s that statement about stones… and glass houses…”
“Oh fuck. Off!” Jacob takes a step back, Edward takes a step forward. Fuck no, safe his ass!
“You’re too keyed up Mr. Black.” Edward says, “I already said you and your brother are safe.”
Jacob takes a deep breath, his head is spinning and the store is too fucking loud and Edward smells so good; a maw of feral hunger opens in his stomach.
Edward is taking two more steps forward, tilting his head to look at Jacob more intensely. He’s close, way too close and he’s cool enough for the temperature change to release the pressure gauge in his head. Jacob realizes that he’s breathing shallowly, biting the inside of his cheek to keep himself from leaping at Edward– to fight? Nope. The feeling is too incongruent.
“It’s inconvenient.” Edward’s so close and his voice is low and soft, “I assure you, it’s inconvenient for me too.”
What? He can smell that? Is it like catnip for girls? Catnip for gays?
“Hm.” Edward says shortly, he steps back turning his head, when Jacob looks in the same direction, he sees Seth, two Bang Energy six packs, a family sized bag of Doritos Cool Ranch, and– much to Jake’s unexplained relief–two ribeye steaks. Seth’s eyes go huge and round at the sight of them when he takes a deep breath.
Say nothing, Seth, he begs internally, please say nothing. Luckily, it’s as if Seth follows his directions because Seth nods when their eyes meet.
“Pleased to make your acquaintance.” Edward says and he nods at Seth, who looks like he’s trying not to rear back and growl like a dog. Edward places the jar he was holding into the shopping cart and soon he’s out of sight.
Seth stares at Jacob, turns to look back in the direction Edward went, looks back at his brother.
“Is he your boyfriend?”
“Huh?!” Jacob’s eyes go wide, then his face grows hot, “What–? No!”
Seth looks unconvinced, “Are you sure?”
“Seth!” Jacob hisses, “How would I not be sure if I had a boyfriend?!”
Seth gives him a level look, with a glint in his eye that makes Jacob apprehensive.
“You didn’t kill him on the spot.” Seth says, suspiciously, “And he’s a bloodsucker, like you said. You know him.”
“We’re in a grocery store!”
“Practically empty!” Seth counters,  “no one would really see, are you going after him?”
Not a bad idea!
“No…” Jacob says.
“Then I’m telling.” Seth says. Jacob tries to give him a hard stare, but Seth makes a face like he’s already won.
“How much?” Jacob asks, and he’s reaching into his pocket.
“Fifty.” Seth says smugly.
“No.”
“Make that 100.”
“That’s not how this works!” Jacob protests.
“100 and a PS4.” Seth says.
“PS4.” Jacob says without thinking, and his head snaps up to take it back but Seth is already interrupting him before he can speak.
“And you buy me Bang Energy!” Seth says gleefully. Jacob gives him a withering glare.
“You take one bang energy and that’s fuc-dging it.” Jacob yanks the second six pack out of the cart and places it haphazardly in the aisle where it didn’t belong.

Making It Work (Chapter 3)
Two hours, it turned out, was really not enough time to talk to his best friends and to pack all of the things he needed to be able to live somewhere that wasn’t Grimmauld Place. After an hour and thirty-five minutes of Ron railing about the injustice of Harry having to be partners with Malfoy and Hermione telling him that there had to be a way out of it in the Aurors handbook, Harry finally managed to get out of their flat and back to his home.
He shrunk his dresser and packed it into an overnight bag, then shrunk his wardrobe, hoping it would have enough work clothes in it to get him through the rest of the week. He picked up the Theory of Occlumency book he’d been struggling through off his nightstand along with the murder mystery he’d actually been enjoying.
The bathroom was next, Harry tossed in his toothpaste and toothbrush followed by shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and a couple of towels. He cast a tempus charm and saw that he only had 2 minutes until he was supposed to be at the ministry house. “Godric,” he muttered. He sprinted down the stairs toward the living room so he could go through the floo. “Kreacher!” he called.
With a sharp crack of apparation, Kreacher appeared in front of him and Harry had to draw up short so he didn’t bowl the elf over.
“Master Harry?” he asked.
“Sorry, I know this is short notice, but I will only be in and out for the next month. I don’t have time to explain, but I have to live with Malfoy for the next month as part of my duties as an Auror.”
“Should Kreacher come to serve Master Harry and Mister Lucius in their new house?”
“Err,” Harry started when a faint buzzing in his ears started up, “It’s not Lucius, it’s Draco, actually. And no, I think we’ll be okay, but I’ll let you know.”
Kreacher nodded, "A fortunate day indeed,” he muttered. “Kreacher would be most pleased to serve you and the young master Black.”
He didn't really have time to respond to that, so he just shrugged, “Thanks,” Harry sighed as he shifted his bag higher on his shoulder, the buzzing in his ears intensifying. “Sorry, but I’ve got to go.”
Kreacher shooed him and he glanced at the slip of paper with the address he was traveling to before he stepped into the floo to travel there. He all but tripped out of the floo when he arrived, he’d never really managed to get the hang of traveling that way.
“You’re late,” a voice called.
Harry rolled his eyes and followed the sound of that voice into the kitchen, “Sorry, honey,” he replied to Malfoy whose back was facing him, hair tied back in a half bun, as he worked at something on the stovetop.
Malfoy turned to glower at him and Harry couldn’t help but take in the long, lean lines of the other man’s body. Who wore trousers and a dress shirt while they were cooking in the kitchen? The effect was ruined when Malfoy opened his mouth, “Look, Potter, when you are late I have to hear that infernal buzzing noise as well. Do try to follow the instructions we’ve been given.”
Malfoy turned back and flicked his hand at the spoon that was stirring something on the stove and it stopped.
“Sorry,” Harry said, too distracted by Malfoy’s display of wandless magic to think about what he was saying.
Malfoy twisted to look wryly over his shoulder, one elegant eyebrow arched at him.
“Shut up,” Harry said.
Malfoy smirked and turned back to the stovetop. “You can pick your room and put your bag down, if you’d like. Dinner will be ready in about five minutes so don’t dawdle.”
“Dinner?”
Malfoy waved a hand carelessly toward the island between them and a knife started to cut through a loaf of fresh bread. Harry’s stomach growled. “Yes, Potter. Judging by the way you scarfed down food in the great hall at school, you’re familiar with the concept.”
“But,” Harry started, not even sure where to start, “Why?”
Malfoy turned and made his way to a wine rack, “White or red, Potter?”
“What are we having?” Harry asked before he could think better of it and the fact that Malfoy hadn’t answered his original question.
“Why, Potter,” Malfoy said, turning to look at him, “I’m surprised. Have you learned about pairing wines with food?”
Harry sniffed, there was no way he was telling Malfoy about Alex. No. way. Instead, he said, “Yes, well, like you said earlier, I’ve changed since school.”
Malfoy nodded slowly and his eyes raked down Harry’s body, then back up before he said, “Roast chicken with herb jus, mashed potatoes, a simple french bread, and salad with an apple vinaigrette.”
“You made all of that?”
A delicate blush spread along Malfoy’s cheeks, Harry found it strangely charming. “I-” Malfoy started. “Much of the preparation-” he cleared his throat. “I’d done much of the preparation last night. It seemed foolish for it to go to waste.”
“No, sorry-” Harry started, waving his hands like an idiot. “That wasn’t a complaint. I was just surprised.”
Before Malfoy could reply a charm he’d set began to ding and he turned around to the oven. “Pick a wine, Potter,” he said, but not unkindly so, as he opened the door and levitated the chicken out of the oven.
Harry dropped his bag on the floor, mouth watering at the smell, and went over to the wine rack and pulled out a Sauvignon Blanc.
Malfoy had a knife carving the chicken as he flicked a hand at the potatoes on the stove so they began emptying themselves into a bowl.
“You’re pretty good at wandless magic,” Harry commented, it wasn’t something that he’d really mastered until he’d been in training for the Aurors, and he was in the extreme minority. He supposed he shouldn’t be surprised based on what he’d learned about their magical cores today.
Malfoy raised an eyebrow, “Well, I have you to thank for that, really,” he said as he levitated the dishes he’d prepared for dinner and sent them into the dining room ahead of them.
“Me?” Harry asked incredulously. They weren’t even in the same training year, Malfoy had spent 4 months in Azkaban when Harry had started training, then done mandatory community service for 6 months and started training the year after Harry.
Malfoy nodded and gestured at the chair across from his at the modest four-person dining room table. “Please help yourself,” he said as he started to put food on his own plate. Then he actually continued to answer Harry’s question, “You stole my wand once.”
Harry winced but his mouth immediately opened to argue.
Malfoy, the annoying git, talked over him, “I know it was for a good reason and I’m not saying you shouldn’t have done it.” Harry’s jaw snapped shut at his words. Malfoy smirked at him and Harry rolled his eyes even as he scooped out a large portion of mashed potatoes.
“I learned,” Malfoy continued, “because I didn’t ever want to feel powerless again. Obviously, my wand is better for precision work and for dueling but if the knife doesn’t cut the bread in perfectly straight even pieces, or if I need to throw up a hasty shield in dueling, it serves just fine.”
While he was talking, Harry nodded along and poured the wine. He was tempted to do it wandlessly because he wanted to show off, but he knew Malfoy wouldn’t be impressed and would probably just mock him. “So, are you planning to cook every night for us?” he asked as he took a bite of mashed potatoes. He couldn’t help but groan as the creamy, buttery taste burst over his tongue.
“Definitely not, Potter. Why should I cook for you every night?”
Harry swallowed and said, “Because this is probably the best meal I’ve had since I lived at Hogwarts.”
Malfoy blushed again and something in the pit of Harry’s stomach shifted disconcertingly. Malfoy sighed, “Perhaps you could learn.”
Harry shrugged and took another bite of chicken, “Are you offering to teach me?”
“Would you accept if I were?” he parried.
Harry leaned back in his chair and stared across at Malfoy as he thought for a minute. “You aren’t like I remember you.”
Malfoy rolled his eyes, “Someone alert the press, the Chosen One is learning that people change as they age,” he drawled.
“You’re a twat,” Harry huffed irritably. “I didn’t mean it like that. I know people change. It’s just-” Harry stopped and looked down at his plate.
“Just what, Potter?” Malfoy asked, his voice has gone low and dangerous; this is more the Malfoy that Harry remembered.
“Just that you’re...” he trailed off again and Malfoy cleared his throat. Harry could feel a light crackling of Malfoy’s magic around him and somehow that warning of his temper pushed Harry over the edge. “You weren’t into saving people. You weren’t invested in the wellbeing of others. And you certainly wouldn’t have been offering to teach someone to cook.”
“You have no idea who I was in school,” Malfoy snapped.
“I know you were a bully!” Harry returned, fire crackling in his veins. “You ratted people out to make yourself feel powerful; joined the inquisitorial squad,” Malfoy spluttered at that but Harry continued. “Tried to kill Dumbledore. Got a fucking dark mark and joined Voldemort at sixteen. You spent your entire school career going on and on about your father. ‘Wait until my father hears about this,’” Harry parroted. “You idolized a man who bullied people and believed in a megalomaniac. You wanted to be just like him and it seems like you did a pretty good job becoming him during the war.”
“So it’s that you couldn’t have imagined that a death eater could change and become an Auror? That you didn’t imagine that a Malfoy could work day in and day out on the same side as you do? That someone who had been in Azkaban could want to make something good out of their life?”
“No,” Harry said, even though Malfoy wasn’t far off the mark. “That’s not-”
“Fuck you, Potter,” Malfoy snapped. “Because I have worked damn hard to be where I am and I have fought bigger monsters than you to get there.” Malfoy slid his chair back from the table and threw down his napkin on his plate as he stood up. “You had no choice,” he growled. “No choice but to be good. No choice but to be the hero. Other people did not have it as easy as you.” He turned from the table, his shoulder-length blond hair flipping as he spun, “And I am taking the blue room. You can have the sodding cream one.”
He stood up, too, not ready to be done arguing. The heat of self righteous anger raced through his veins, making his heart hammer and blood sing. “It wasn’t easy-” Harry started but Malfoy made it to his room and slammed the door. Harry could hear a shouted “Circumvestio” and knew that there was no way Malfoy would be able to hear him now.
“It wasn’t bloody easy,” he muttered to himself as he plopped back down and shoved another spoonful of potatoes into his mouth. “Was really fucking hard.”
He stewed while he finished his dinner, the food somehow didn’t taste as good as it had before they’d started bickering but it was still better than what Harry would have made.
When he’d finished his meal, he cleared the plates (wandlessly; take that Malfoy) and sent them to wash themselves, then he packaged up the leftover food and put it under a stasis charm so Malfoy could eat it tomorrow. He drained a second glass of wine before re-corking the remainder. Bloody Malfoy.
It wasn’t until he’d gotten into his room that Harry started to think about what Malfoy had said. Harry hated the excruciating process of becoming self-aware. While Malfoy hadn’t been right about everything, he hadn’t been entirely wrong either. Of course people changed, Malfoy had probably proven he had over and over to people; he probably had to do it all of the time, Harry reflected.
He flopped back onto his bed and crossed his arms over his stomach. He was going to have to apologize.

Sigils and Willows: Part 8
Nomira could not express how happy she was to have her clothes. They had not given her her bag, nor her nightgown books or candies. They had given her her clothes. She could have wept as she felt the familiar fabric hug her skin. Wedding dresses were not meant to be slept in. Indeed hers was meant to be taken off as fast as possible.
There was a pit in her stomach as she sat in her room, waiting to move down to the breakfast area. A worry. Her parents would send people after her right? They would try to rescue her from this place. From Untine.
From a place who’s king claimed that he did not know why she was brought here. Could that really be the case? If so, why was she here. Who had brought her here and for what purpose. She stood from the bed, thin but not uncomfortable simply not lavish, and started to pace around the small room.
If this was not a politically motivated strike why had it happened? The Princess seemed to be less of a scholar here, more of a warrior. Perhaps Princess Orsa was as Nomira considered Halnoa, a scholar of the blade and body.
Granted Nomira’s own “scholarship” was less that and more just her notating her favorite types of sigils, favorite theorycrafting about sigils. Even the possibilities of new sigils. It did not matter to her if her ideas were possible or not. Even here in the once home of the dragons she could not access the power she had always dreamed of.
She stopped pacing as she saw herself in the mirror. Tan skin, teal hair, silver eyes. She looked tired. Haunted. Sad. What could she do here? What if the king and princess were lying? Could she do anything about it?
The answer was obvious. No, she could not. Politically, she was as useless as a dull blade here.
Dull blades could still rip fabric, you just needed to apply more pressure. She looked away from herself in the mirror. The image of the tired sad girl staring back at her draining her confidence. She was not made for this type of thing. For political intruge. She was barely made for contracts and treaties. One look at the contract she had made with the Silver Forest and you would be able to see that she could not be trusted to do anything political. Why they agreed still baffled her.
She almost did not notice the knock at her door. Her mind was so in thought in the dull room around her that she barely gave it any thought, simply thinking it another product of her mental state.
When it came again more insistant she finally moved to the door, and put on a smile. It was the prim proper smile of a princess. The servant who greeted her smiled back.
“Can I help you?” Nomira asked gently.
“You’ve been summoned to breakfast.” He replied with a small bow. “I am to lead you there Princess Nomira.
Nomira nodded, wonderful she had a chaperone, and gestured for him to lead the way.
The grand hall was beyond Nomira’s wildest imaginings. The king used this for breakfast? Carved into what felt like the very heart of the mountain, with doors that seemed to lead into every other part of the castle and two large entrance doors made of stone, fifty feet high that lay open to a long staircase that descended to the city of New Untine, the grand hall was a sight to behold.
The walls were smooth as if sanded to the finest of grits. Colors that were a true part of the stone swirled and mixed in the stone. Reds, whites, yellows, greens, and browns swirled, dotted, and captured a natural beauty that also eemed truely ethereal.
The area itself could hold thousands of people. Perhaps tens of thousands if they were shoulder to shoulder. Or maybe just ten thousand. It was hard to say. The room was very large.
Nomira had not noticed that she had just been standing and gawking. It seemed strange. That now, in this place she would loose her composure.
She was in the day dress, a pale blue garment that dropped down to her ankles and had short sleeves and a modest neckline. Not to high not to low. The skirt flowed around her, yet she felt nearly informal as she walked into the dining area.
It was not that everyone in the room was dressed more formally than her, it was that everyone in the room was dressed differently than her. The noble ladies come to dine in the castle wore elegant tops that exposed their midriffs. Often the edges covered in sparkling gemstones or scales of metal.
The women also wore skirts that cut of at the knees, made of fine leather died to match. Were they died to match their eyes? Yes. Dyed brown, green, blue, or red in order to match eye color. It was a beautiful fashion.
The men in turn wore vests. No shirts adorned them, simply open vests with the same stylings of gemstones or metal scales. Shining in the light of the day. Wearing skirts the same color as their own eyes.
There were two people in the noble class who were not dressed in this style. Nomira watched the king and Princess of Untine as they sat at the high table. Both dressed in fine suits of a fashion that she herself did not know. They were elegant. Powerful. Two figures that loomed over the hall, though everyone inside of it was at least six feet tall apart from Nomira. She was the odd one out here.
She glanced around, she had been invited to dine here. To engage in breakfast with the court. There were empty seats at the high table, but perhaps. No, she had been invited by the king himself.
As she stepped towards the high table the king stood, gesturing to a seat, and nodding. He then sat down, and continued to eat his breakfast.
With a nod, Nomira walked to the seat and took it primly. She noted the looks of the other nobles. Curious, yet not indignant or enraged that she got this seat of honor near to the king. After Nomira had seated herself she spoke.
“Thank you your majesty, for this seat,” Her voice was cool, calm. She took a breath to calm her nerves. She nodded as the servants brought her a plate full of food. Toast, butter, eggs, bacon, and some varying greens. She blinked looking at it.
Her stomach rumbled. She was so hungry, more hungry than she was sure she had the right to be. That did not stop her from digging into the food. Prim and proper as always. She ate quickly and with a hunger that while not as potent, reminded her of worse days. She had gotten soft. That was obvious to her.
Her eyes trailed the room, and noticed that many other eyes were on her. The strange princess from a foreign land who happened to appear in this place. She cared not for the nobles eyes, but then…
The chair next to her moved. Nomira jumped turning to see the beautiful princess of Untine. Orsa. Hearts that woman was so tall. She blinked as the Princess sat beside her. Nomira paused fork halfway to her mouth as she just, took a moment. Stunned into silence by the strangeness of what was happening.
“Princess?” She inquired, or well tried to. That was the only word that came out of her mouth before her brain flooded her tongue with so many questions that she could not ask a single one. At least the many questions was part of the reason she was tongue tied.
The other reason was Princess Orsa herself. Tall, with light skin and dark brown hair. She was beautiful in a fearsome way. As she took a seat next to Nomira, Nomira could not help but gaze over physique of the woman. Muscles that shown even in that suit. A grace that could only be achieved by a true warrior, powerful yet gentle. And those ruby red eyes, not as stern as Orsa’s fathers but certainly beautiful in their own right.
It was not like when Orsa was running. Yes certainly Nomira had seen more of Orsa while she was running but somehow that was less than she saw now. Of the political side of the princess. Something she had, evendentlly mistakenly, wondered if Orsa even possessed.
Nomira shook herself slightly. Now was certainly not the the time to get distracted. She paused as she felt the ring on her right hand ring finger. Closing her eyes she closed her fist. Feeling that pressure. She had a duty, she would make sure to achieve that duty.
“Princess Nomira?” Orsa’s voice, a deep feminine tenor brought her out of her own mind. Nomira blushed deeply.
“Apologies Princess,” She said incining her head in a gentle sign of respect. She needed to focus. To play whatever political game would allow here to get out of here, to get home. “I got distracted and missed if you said anything.”
Orsa laughed, a beautiful series of tones straight from her chest. The sound of someone who enjoyed laughing and did so a lot. Nomira smiled back gently.
“I rarely say important things Princess Nomira.” Orsa responded waving a hand, a small smile touching her lips. “More often than not I only say important things at parties.”
“Oh?” Nomira intoned, taking another bite of her food. She was almost done with the plate. This breakfast had been amazing. Yet something stuck out to her. After the cold conversation they had had on the walls of the palace, Orsa was being rather friendly.
“Yes, most often its when I’m tired and the dancing is done. I make a statement that my father simply must refute the following day.” She waved a hand. “There was a time where I made a proclamation that every child in the city needed a flower crown. Still don’t think that one needed refuted.”
Nomira paused, regarding Orsa. “Every child needed… flower crowns? You have the power to make procloations like that?”
Orsa paused. “Yes,” She paused. “Father and I share duties in the regards. He holds court today instead of myself. Starting soon.” She paused. “How does Galdraz do it?”
Nomira blinked, and for a moment was stunned. Orsa was allowed to make policy desisions? Perhaps it was underneath the kings supervision. Yet holding court. Dealing with the woes of the people. That was something usually only reserved for the ruler of a kingdom.
“I worked as a diplomat and ambassador, Princess.” Nomira replied after a moment. “I was not necessarily in charge of anything. I’ve never made any policy desisions. Or helped in court. Though I have attended many sessions.”
And offered advice. Advice that was never heeded until she worked so hard. She fought so hard. Until her father finally gave her the responseability to create a union with the Silver Forest. And she did.
She almost missed Orsa’s next reply, but thankfully snapped out of her own thoughts as the Princess started to speak.
“You were not allowed…” She frowned. “Were you going to rule after your parents death or abdication?”
Nomira nodded. “Yes, it would either be me or my brother. Most likely myself,” She paused. “Depended on who was married, on who had heirs.” Nomira looked at Orsa. “Why do you ask?”
“It simply seems odd that a queen or king would be expected to rule when they themselves have not made policy desisions.” Orsa shrugged. “If it works for Galdraz then I see no reason for it to not continue, I simply find the idea odd.”
Nomira nodded. “I’ve used that argument, believe me,” She tried to keep the tired effect out of her voice. The one that came in whenever a subject like this was discussed, one she had argued on for so many years. “It has not worked like I wanted it to. Granted, it did get me a wedding eventually. Sadly…”
Nomira sighed looking at Orsa. She knew she looked pathetic here. With everyone so tall, so mighty. The Untinians were who killed the dragons, and each and every one of them looked like they could do so without issue. It was an intimidating sight. She paused and finished off the final few bites of her plate.
“Sadly?” Orsa prompted gently.
Nomira shook her head. “With luck I can convince your father to help me get back, then the wedding will go through.” She paused. “Does anyone really know why I’m here?” She asked gently. “Do you know why I would be here?”
At that Orsa seemed to shrink a little bit. Ruby eyes glancing out at the room. “No. I don’t think any of us know why you are here.”
An interesting choice of emphasis for words. Nomira noted that but for the moment dismissed the ida that it would mean anything. After all, she had a king to speak to. She stood, and walked around the table, so she could stand opposite him. She would look this man in the eyes.

Scarcely any time had passed since that first kiss, the one where Hermione sealed their fate with her lips in the Room of Requirement. A mere week, marked by stolen moments in hidden alcoves and empty classrooms, where their heated encounters were frequently interrupted by passing strangers and life's tedious obligations.
As mad as Hermione was before, now she was besotted. One taste was all it took for Harry to become her sole craving, turning everything else into a chore.
Yet, in the Room of Requirement, where they found themselves again, there were no interruptions or barriers that couldn’t simply be removed. It was in those four walls that Hermione had been siphoned down to her senses, left only with the desperate urge to keep going, and chase the frenzied heat that had been growing in their bodies constrained by clothing.
Breathes heavy, tongue circling, hands kneading, pleasure building, until he uttered her name like a warning.
Her plea came heartfelt and frantic. Embarrassing.
And Harry looked up at her with wide green eyes, so eager to please.

Gale has been enjoying life post-Absolute, mostly. Oh certainly he felt a bit lonely no longer having the tadpole crew around, and teaching certainly wasn't as thrilling as adventuring (far easier on the knees, however), but he liked it well enough. He hadn't managed to make many friends, however, despite his best efforts. But that was just the way of things, really.
Or it had been, until the day he nearly ran into a short tiefling sorcerer in the academy library.

Dirty Windows | 11 | Nora x Hancock
A Fallout 4 Soulmate AU
\\
Fic Summary:
Hancock never thought he would find his soulmate. Once a common occurrence, soulmates turned into a bit of a rarity after the bombs dropped. It was to be expected when there was an influx of people getting shot in the face on a daily basis. So when Hancock discovered that he had a soulmate he was ecstatic; all of the people in the Commonwealth, and he was one of the lucky few.
Too bad his soulmate didn't want anything to do with him.
When Nora thought for sure she was going to die too, the pain stopped – and then there was nothing. Nothing but the emptiness. Nothing but the grief. Half of her soul was suddenly gone forever. She was dropped in the middle of the ocean, drifting among the waves with no land in sight. Then just as suddenly she had been cast adrift, she found land. The hole was filled the moment it had been created. As she gripped Nate’s vault suit and begged him to open his eyes, Nora found herself battling with the horrifying realization that she had another soulmate; that some stranger had taken Nate's place.

“You’re lying. In what world would bottle caps be a viable currency?”
Hancock snorted into his water, grinning like a fool as he watched the woman stare at a handful of blood-spattered bottle caps. This was all he had wanted from the very beginning – conversation. He didn’t need deep and meaningful interaction. He just wanted to get to know his soulmate, so he delighted in their small talk.
“In this world,” he replied. “Why else would every one of these bastards have bottle caps on ‘em?”
“I don’t know – maybe it’s a hobby. Like collecting stamps.”
“Stamps? People collect those things?”
She deposited the bottle caps into her bag without a whole lot of care as she grumbled, “Not anymore, apparently.”
Once the situation had been resolved, Hancock found that he rather enjoyed walking his soulmate through her first firefight. The woman was a good listener; whenever he told her to adjust her grip or her footing, she did it. When he told her to make a run for better cover, she bolted. At the end of the altercation, Hancock had told her to take a moment to breathe. It was then, and only then, when she had finally crumbled. It was as if she had came out of some sort of fugue state, and was coping with everything she had done. The woman had dropped to the ground, coming to rest on her knees. It was there, in a folded heap, where she started to take deliberate, slow breaths. The anger that had been crackling between them finally dissolved.
“Y’did good,” he had said. “Yer a helluva shot.” There hadn't been a response, only more deep breathing. He frowned slowly; so it was back to the cold shoulder. Regardless, he would consider the day a win. His soulmate had finally spoken to him. He reached to her, and she reached to him. He’d never felt the feeling of home like he had in that moment. The feeling of completion. He didn’t want to let that go. Hancock proved he could help. But the day was a win, he insisted to himself. It was a start.
“Just… give me a second, please,” She had whispered between breaths.
Hancock had made an attempt to redirect her attention. He would let her take a moment to catch up, but he didn’t want her to dwell in some dark pit of guilt.
“Hey,” he had said in a near whisper. “Let’s check the bodies.”
She did. Remaining calm, and sticking to her slow breaths, the woman methodically searched the bodies of the fallen raiders. Ammo, guns, drugs and caps littered the floor around her within seconds. Hancock told her which ammo was compatible with the gun she was toting, and walked her through the steps of reloading an old sawed off shotgun.
“What’s up with these guys and bottle caps?” she had said, mostly to herself than to him.
Before he knew it, he was explaining the currency of the post-apocalyptic world. He silently marveled over the fact that this wasn’t common knowledge before reminding himself that this woman crawled out of a vault just recently. Maybe they still used that paper currency in there.
As his woman stowed everything into her pack he took a seat at the chair that was still perched near the window. “Ya know,” he drawled. “Yer handling all this a lot better than I expected. Y’haven’t got sick yet, anyway.”
“That’s, uh… That’s all you, actually,” she said as she double-checked the magazine. She had a spare mag now, a shotgun.
Hancock scrunched his brows as he shook out a cigarette from the pack. “It’s comin’ from you, though.”
“It is, but it isn’t. You don’t know how to block out my emotions, and I’m currently channeling yours, so. That’s all you.”
Hancock put his feet up in the sill, taking a deep pull from the cigarette. “So when I started feelin’ super pissy…”
“That was you, too. You were angry, and that was better than being scared out of my mind. I used your anger, and you picked up on it coming from me…”
So the only reason why she was talking with him was because she was leeching off of his emotions. The realization stung a bit. He reminded himself that progress was progress. A win was a win. Hancock decided he would keep being useful. If that was the only way he could get his foot in the door, so be it.
“My inexperience paid off. That’s a first,” he said with a wry smile. She didn’t laugh. So much for jokes. “Hey, so whaddarya doin’ in this place anyway? You obviously ain’t makin’ friends.”
There was a long, heavy exhale and then she started making her way further into the building, up a rickety flight of stairs. “Guy on the balcony said that there were settlers inside.”
Hancock scoffed, “Sounds like a fuckin’ trap t’me, sister.”
The woman didn’t reply. She kept making her way deeper and deeper into the building. She didn't need help taking out her attackers; she knew how to grip the gun, how to stand and aim. Now that she knew her shit, she just needed his help to keep a level head. He stayed with her until Fahrenheit came barging into his office.
Fahrenheit looked murderous. He quietly slipped away from his soulmate. Despite severing his part of the connection, he could still feel his soulmate’s presence lingering with his; it was as if she was standing beside him. She would probably stick around until she was finished using his emotions. In the meantime, he would endeavor to remain calm and collected.
“Well, heya stranger,” he said to Fahrenheit. He was eager to tell her of his progress but Fahrenheit didn’t look at all amused. Fahr suffered from resting bitch-face anyway, but after a brief once-over, Hancock was able to tell that she was pissed. More pissed than usual, anyway. Pissed-pissed, one could say. “You kids have fun killin’ muteys?”
“Finn is gonna be a real fuckin’ problem for you.”
Hancock blinked his surprise, then took another drag of his cigarette. Fahrenheit was reaching for her own pack of cigarettes. When Hancock flipped open his lighter she leaned in close and lit up. “Aw, Fahr, ya didn't like yer playdate?”
“I’m serious, Hancock!” A heavy plume of smoke rolled past her lips with each word.
There went his good mood. Hancock dropped his lighter back in his pocket, and gestured for the angry woman to take a seat. She did, and then she launched into the events that took place that day. It didn't take long for Fahrenheit to supply him with all of the juicy details. She wasn’t one to embellish. It would seem that one of his better fighters didn’t really favor how Goodneighbor was being ran – and he wasn’t really keeping those opinions secret. He wanted Fahrenheit’s help taking over, he thought he would be able to win her over – but Hancock and Fahrenheit went way back. He paid her, sure, but he paid all of his employees. Fahrenheit’s loyalty was deeper than her pockets, but Finn didn’t have to know that.
“Asshole was so fucking cocky,” Fahrenheit seethed. “’ You and me can run this place’ – fuckin’ dickhead.”
“Yeah, but what didja say to him?”
“Nothing,” she growled, pinching off the end of her third cigarette with her index finger and thumb.
“Nothing?”
“I don’t talk to idiots.”
He chuckled, rising to his feet. There was a filing cabinet tucked against his work desk. He pulled a bottle of ancient whiskey from one of the drawers and unscrewed the cap. There was some potential for a damn good plan here. He could let Finn keep running his mouth and turn a blind eye. If Finn accumulated any followers, he could get them all taken care of in one fell swoop. After taking a swig from the bottle, he passed it to Fahrenheit, who guzzled down a couple fingers worth of the alcohol. She held the bottle out towards him.
They settled on the couch and shared the bottle, basking in contemplative silence for what seemed like a handful of minutes before Hancock finally came up with an idea worth sharing.
“So what if we—“
“-ELP! HELP! SIR!”
As Hancock’s entire body jolted in surprise, he fumbled the bottle and it clattered to the ground. Alcohol spilled all over the floor. He gasped like he had been stabbed.
“Hancock?” Fahrenheit stood suddenly, her hand dropping to her pistol as she took a step back out of caution. Her reaction pained him (did she think he was going feral?), but he paid it no mind as he reached out towards his soulmate. Images overlapped until he focused on what his soulmate was seeing – and he damn near shit himself.
While sitting in his office, Hancock got a first person point of view of a deathclaw barreling towards his soulmate. He was completely and totally unable to hold back his yell of shock. His body lurched back again, swinging over the arm of the couch. He flopped onto the ground like a sack of tatos. His soulmate’s body was encased in power armor. He could see plating dancing in his periphery, could also feel the padding of the helmet encasing her head. The weapon in his woman’s hands was heavy — fuck, it was a whole-ass minigun. The end of the weapon was spinning, red and angry, but there were no bullets.
“Holy shit,” he heaved. The deathclaw lunged, teeth and claws bared. “HOLY SHIT!” The minigun dropped to the ground with a deafening thud, and a heavily armored fist shot out, ramming into the deathclaw’s open maw. The fist opened, and then clenched down around the bottom half of the creature’s jaw. “Where the fuck is your gun!? Why the fuck are yoU HOLDING ON TO IT LET GO! ” He was yelling at the top of his lungs. He had never felt more horrified in his entire life.
The door to his office slammed open, he could see people dancing in his periphery, and several voices yelled out to him. Fahrenheit yelled back, telling them to lower their weapons and stand down.
With one fist holding the deathclaw hostage, the other raised high and slammed into its head. The first hit slammed into its skull. The second caught on the creature’s giant curved horn. There was an awful pain that blossomed in his wrist, as if his soulmate’s sprained.
“STOP PUNCHING THE THING — WHERE IS YOUR GUN!?”
Another solid punch to its head, and then his woman tucked tail and ran. Or tried to. The armor was cumbersome. Too heavy, too bulky, to run fast and yet she put her all into creating distance between her and the creature. She tore around the corner of a dilapidated building, the deathclaw hot on her heels.
“How do I kill it?!”
“WITH MORE AMMO!”
There was a mess of bodies strewn about the front of the old building, all freshly killed. She continued to charge forward, only to skid to a complete stop. She dropped to her knees and started sifting through the bodies. There was gun fire, not from her, but from another source. And then there was yelling, someone shouting at her. A shotgun was pulled from the blood and gore – a measly, ancient pump action. She pivoted on her armored knee, the plating grinding into something soft and slick. It helped her pivot with ease. She raised the weapon and took aim.
Hancock, still sprawled on the floor in his office, watched helplessly as the deathclaw leapt towards his soulmate once more.
