Ok, Riddle fans, I am starting to understand.

As I go through more of Riddle's Vignette's and the story, seeing him actually interacting with his house and people outside of it, I get it. He's intimidating and intense, absolutely, and he doesn't always understand why things like social media and trends or parties are important to say Cater or Ace.

But he tries. He learned how Cater memorized and learned and changed his studying style in order to help him. Downloaded a whole app, made posts that would make no sense to anyone else and weird tags, just to help him, spending even more additional time and energy after creating a 300 page study guide.

He continually steps in to encourage and guide Deuce and generally doesn't seem to know or care about his past delinquency, only what he does now as an NRC student. Even the conversations with Ace which tend to go sideways or chiding, seem like they are simply almost too much alike, just different values and priorities.

Yes, the other students are intimidated by Riddle. But as I dive in more, especially after his Overblot, it's because he holds others to the same standards as himself for better or for worse. Does he recognize the privilege of receiving so much education on magic and other subjects so early? I'm not sure. But he looks at his students and asks why not. Why can't they pass, why are the struggling, how do I get them there. Like, this fixation of nobody dropping out or flunking tells me that it happens a lot, maybe the most in Heartslabyul? But Riddle is making his legacy at NRC that he's graduating at the top and every one of his house is coming with him. He genuinely believes in his people and that they will be the best, most cohesive and talented dorm because they worked together, he just has a different approach to it after his holier than thou attitude was knocked out of him after his Overblot.

hi i ride motorcycle year round and wanted to chime in. for vasco's small around-town trips he'd probably be fine with his ears free, but for longer trips at higher speeds or when its cold out he'd want them protected. probably by tucking them under his chin into the collar of a jacket and then putting a scarf or bandana on. also goggles would be helpful if a full helmet wasn't wanted. since they're in europe and around italy specifically he could have a nice ducati (fast rockety sport bikes) or a cafe racer (much more like a motorized bicycle but they can still have a lot of power) a cafe racer would offer a lot of seat space for machete to be thoroughly uncomfortable in lol

just had this thought of lily as a lit student volunteering at her local library and barty as this delinquent being assigned to do community service there. like she starts off with a bit of a ‘oh this poor criminal, i must save him’ mindset and then is constantly frustrated by barty as it’s clear that he just. doesn’t want to be saved. and he’ll deliberately mess up the book organisation systems and try to scam people by fining them when their books are nowhere near overdue so he can keep the money for himself. and lily is running around after him, huffing as she loudly puts the books back in their proper places, whacking him round the back of the head when she catches him trying to scam some old man. she’s screaming at him in the back room, leaning over him as he sits back unbothered on one of the chairs, shoving her finger in his face but he just grins and tries to bite it so she’s whacking him again and storming out bc he’s just SO infuriating. but then somehow he’s also going in depth with her about the motivations of iago in othello and whether the tragedy can be blamed entirely on him or if society itself plays a part in the plot’s development or animatedly discussing keats’ ode to a nightingale and the concept of negative capability and how it relates to the body. and she’s just completely fascinated by him, she wants to analyse him like one of the texts from her classes, she thinks she could write essay upon essay about his view of the world and the way his brain works and the tattoo she can always see just poking out of the top of his collar. and now she’s missing deadlines bc she wants to spend time w him, and laughing as he knocks over an entire bookshelf while trying to tell her about the book he’s just read, and really he doesn’t want to be saved but maybe he’s saving her instead…

I really like your art and your oc :D (well, i only know one of your ocs fhdgfhs) anyways, just wanted to ask something about Samuel because im just. very curious. why is he even making those (most often) horrible choices in terms of like, in-character explanation?? hope that this doesnt sound rude or anything, im actually asking because my own FL character (who is based on me. which ALSO makes them a bit too similar to Poor Edward both in personality AND ALSO IN THE WAY THEIR FACE LOOK?? but i digress) also tends to make those Horrible Choices but their reason is "too much curiosity, too much impulsivity and too much sensory-seeking". anyways ive just noticed that your and my characters keep making the same choices most of the time (which is really funny to me fhdgsfd) so i wanted to know what are. Sam's reasons for this

alsdjfaeslfj omg thank you, THIS IS VERY BROAD it honestly depends on the choice!! Some of it is impulsivity, some of it is that he's more comfortable confronting things physically than he is thinking things through -- so, like, he will often not cautiously analyse something before touching it/sticking it in his mouth/etc because he's not good at cautious analysis and he feels he's more likely to get information by interacting with it. And the consequences are, like, bad, and he'll think to himself "ugh what an idiot why did i do that," but deep down I think he really feels it's better to be in pain and understand than to do nothing.

Some of his poor choices are similarly intentional in that he would rather be the one doing the unwise thing -- he made the pact with the Boil of Calamaties so that Peter didn't have to. Some of his poor choices are out of fear -- he's been frightened of dream shenanigans ever since he got threatened by October, and he recently got a choice in a dream that made him AWARE he was in a dream someone else was controlling and he just freaked out and did whatever seemed like it would get him out the fastest, without much careful consideration because he was panicking. He also wants to be Part Of Something and that desire can be manipulated -- agreeing to go to war for the Bishop of Southwark and participating in the Black Ribbon were both due to someone he had feelings respect for presenting it to him as a grand and greater cause, even if he later had second thoughts. Things that speak to his own beliefs (or challenge those beliefs) are things he's more likely to NEED to poke his nose into, to figure out what he's supposed to believe down here.

And, of course, despite his (at this point somewhat debatable) status as a deacon, Samuel is very, very bad at chastity. He is extremely easy to seduce, though I usually headcanon the Scandalous Encounters he has as someone coming on to him first. Sam also has a bit of Struggling To Correctly Read Subtle Cues which leads to him accidentally tripping into affairs and then being too awkward and into it to back out (this is what happened with the Provost).

And then, this is Fallen London. Sometimes there aren't GOOD options. Sometimes you just don't have knowledge. Sam's first disastrous zee voyage went awry when he fed his crew a zee monster that made them all ravenously hungry and ended with him getting eaten by his crew. But without knowing that's how it's going to go, the idea of "oh man, this is where rubbery lumps come from, right? We could make some ourselves!" is not any more unreasonable than the decision to go to zee in the first place. He just didn't know.

It's probably a good thing (for Solas) that Lavellan didn't have any way to contact him while he was in Fade jail initially, because all it would take is a few earnest questions (that he can't help but answer because it's HER) and a couple of the abundant context clues lying around and she'd suss out his plots to both do a Fade jail switcheroo with Rook and let the Veil fall on its own when Elgar'nan dies.

Neither plan is particularly difficult to see coming if you have even the tiniest amount of understanding of how the jail or the Veil work, and Lavellan is no dummy. The Veil falling one especially. I had to headcanon that my Lavellan figured that one out after hearing about the relevant mural and just didn't mention it, assuming Rook and Co. had figured it out too because it's genuinely that obvious.

My Lavellan would absolutely find the castling thing really fucking funny though, before shutting that shit down.

One of my fave little tidbits in scarlet hollow is how the traits you have are also subject to [REDACTED]s manipulation like. When she manipulates you the traits that so far provide you reliable extra bonus information about the world are like "shes right, you should feel bad for doubting her" like. Insane writing choice that somehow maintains choice in removing player agency i love it
