How to Make Friends
A more-or-less clear guide on social interactions
Growing up with heavy ADHD and generalized anxiety, it was always a bit hard for me to make friends and socialize. Despite my yearning for friendship, I was always "the quiet one" and "a loner", simply because I didn't know how to approach certain social situations, and it made any friendship I had extremely unstable (except for my sister @vive-le-quebec-flouffi, who was so extroverted and friendly it was literally impossible to escape her clutches of socialization)
As I grew older, I learned through a lot of trial and error what makes a good friendship.
Or, rather... what's the best way for someone to WANT to be your friend (without being superficial or hypocritical.)
Now, obviously, this doesn't work for everyone. But this is what I found helped me the most in social circles (especially online) and I hope it can help others too
LET'S BEGIN!
1 - Be yourself
Now that sounds very cliche and cringe, I know, but hear me out, because my opinion on this is not the same as all those feelgood inspirational movies and ads.
"Being yourself" isn't as simple as it seems. Because after all, what does "self" imply? If someone is, say, a criminal, would "be yourself" mean that they should embrace their sinful side?
No, obviously not.
"Be yourself" is a bit more nuanced, but I'll try to boil it down for you.
It just means "be unashamed of your qualities which you think are flaws". For example, "be yourself" would apply to someone who sees themselves as ugly, or maybe someone with an odd yet unharmful hobby, or a weird sense of fashion, or someone with say a handicap, a speech impediment. "Be yourself" is a sentence for the specific people who have genuine good in them, but are afraid to show it to others because they have been persecuted in the past, or are scared to be. It does NOT mean to accept genuine flaws. "Be yourself" does not include say violent anger issues, an addiction, a recent crime committed, or a generally unpleasant personality. Those are obviously not things to encourage. You can understand they may be a thing that happen to you, and accept it in your life, but that's different from being proud of it or encouraging it.
Speaking of personalities... let's talk about that
2 - Be kind
Now when some people hear that, they think it means "always smile no matter what, always look happy and positive, always agree with everyone just so you don't hurt their feelings, and never cause any drama", like you're Deku in My Hero Academia or Steven Universe in his titular show.
But that's... not quite that.
Obviously, kindness is something you use to help people feel better, to cheer up, and feel happy, and obviously to be kind, you need to have compassion, heart, empathy, and always put yourself in other people's shoes regardless of who they are. But it is not necessarily all-encompassing.
There's a rule that I think anyone learning kindness must learn. It's that sometimes, kindness means to be firm.
Not mean, of course. Not judgmental, not insensitive. Don't insult anyone, don't belittle or patronize anyone or make them feel inferior to you. That's still very rude and that's not what you want.
But what I mean is that sometimes, if you know that a person's actions towards something are wrong, especially if it's towards someone else, you must be able to point it out, and act accordingly. Don't just stand there and agree with them just because you don't want to hurt their feelings. You must still be able to know right from wrong. Kindness just means you won't be an ass about it, it doesn't mean to stay silent.
Hey, that brings me to point three!
3 - Show your own opinions
If there's one thing people hate just as much as meanness, it's those who stand by and do nothing about it.
Regardless of if you agree with them or not, if you say absolutely nothing when genuinely bad behaviour is happening, out of fear of "starting a fight", you are actively making the person who is being attacked feel alone.
I remember myself, when I was bullied in the first two grades of secondary school (11-13 years old for those who don't know) for "being ugly", I was told by my mother (who was friends with other kid's parents) that some of the kids "didn't hate me" and "didn't agree with the bullying". And I asked her "if they don't hate me, why won't they talk to me?" She never managed to answer that one. And it broke my heart, because outside of my sister, I had no one else.
Don't be like that. You may be scared of acting, but you know who would be grateful if you did act? The victims. And isn't their opinion of you much more important than the opinion of someone who acts with hatred and bigotry?
If you see someone suffering injustice, or even just hear someone who has a rather harmful opinion, don't be scared to tell them that you disagree. Obviously don't be an asshole about it, stay civil, but if you voice out your opinion, you will be seen as someone who stays true to their beliefs and is brave enough to stand up for them if the opportunity comes.
There's obviously much more that comes with social life (nonverbal cues, sense of humor, timing and mood), and I don't know everything (I'm just some random québécois girl on the internet). But I hope this was a bit more helpful. I did have fun writing this, at least. So I guess that's better than nothing!

The tfp kids were some of the first things I created in GL2, and it's been a few months since then and I have gotten much better. So here's my updated version of their designs/story.
Also fyi before I forget this is not what I would actually have them be in the show if I had written it. This just self indulgent takes on the characters. Let me know if you want to see how I would have written the show.
Miko
Age: 17
Pronouns: Uses any.
Likes: Skateboarding, drawing, slash monkey, kemonomimi, horror movies, fighting, her friends, and monster trucks.
Dislikes: School, conformation, bullies, and authority.
Description: Miko is a full blooded Japanese exchange student that came for America’s music, art, and to free themselves from his overly strict parents. She's quite energetic and finds it hard to sit still. So to help rid herself of her extra energy he'll practice kickboxing or parkour around town. While she may not act it she is actually intelligent. Miko is also quite the music and language prodigy, easily being able to learn them. He just hates the rigid school system and doesn't care for homework. Miko doesn't have many friends as most are put off by their strange personality and or scared of her. If you do become their friend though Miko is very loyal and will be your ride or die to the end.
Miko is a force to be reckoned with so watch out Decepticons, they're coming for you!
Raf
Age: 12.5;
Pronouns: He/Him
Likes: Coding, his friends, studying, snakes, robots, math, science, cats, school, chocolate, and nature.
Dislikes: Yelling, pity, scary movies, being alone, hospitals, and dogs.
Description: Raf is a young techno genius that was born with quite a few health problems. He is the second youngest out of his many siblings, five to be exact. Since his parents are always busy with work and Raf’s other siblings, he tends to be forgotten a lot. He doesn't let that get him down though (most of the time) and is quite a cheery kid. He puts his smarts to good use and has skipped four grades already while also taking some college classes. While he likes science and math his real passion is coding along with robotics. He dreams of one day opening his own tech company.
He might be a sweet kid but don't underestimate him. Raf could hack circles around even among some of Cybertronian’s elite.
Jack
Age: 16
Pronouns: He/Him
Likes: Motorcycles, girls, family, social media, and his friends.
Dislikes: Risks, seeing his friends hurt, and bullying.
Description: Jack is quite an average guy all things considered; he's not overly smart or a great fighter but he is quite the strategist and knows how to deal with people. Jack helps bring out the strengths in Miko and Raf and how to make them use it the most effectively. If he is trained properly he could become quite the leader. He lives with only his Mom, Jack’s dad having passed away a long time ago. He does every he can to help support his mom. While yes he feels she can be too overprotective or a bit embarrassing at times he loves his mom and wants to lessen her burden as much as he can. The reason he even got a job in the first place was to help her out with the bills.
Watch out for our very own human prime! He won't hesitate to sick his friends on those deserving.
Explanation undercut
Miko is still my favorite out of the trio and I will continue to show blatant favoritism. I learned much much more into the punk aesthetic because I think it's perfect for her personality. While I did like how colourful her old design was from a character design perspective it wasn't really unified or fit there enough.
Anyways she has some big ol stomping boots now that are definitely steel tipped. (Ouch man) They give them around 4-5 inches and make her the same height as Jack when wearing them. She also has knee pads and a shoulder pad. Well because skating and I wanted her to have armor without it being armor. If that makes sense? Miko also has horns partly since she likes kemonomimi but mostly because he's a “daredevil.” Miko's skateboard is Bulkhead themed, of course no explanation needed there. I tried to do some messy makeup since they give off that vibe.
I'm a sucker for the black people with white hair design. Plus I thought Raf kinda being (fictional) albino would play into Raf being ill. When something is wrong with you you're more likely to have more problems. For him I kept it generally similar to the last design just made more cohesive. He still has that nerdy school boy vibe and stuff. He also has a wrist brace now since someone told me how bad canes are for it so I wanted him to have some extra support to help.
If you look closely, his bag has a bumblebee on it.
Jack's design also didn't change that much; the main thing is his eyes are now blue. I thought it would be a nice nod to how since he's a human prime that his eyes should be autobot blue. Plus it fits the color scheme better. His gloves are leather and arcree themed. Yeah nothing to say much, as he also didn't change a lot. 🤷
Edit: Forgot to include the updated irl me design.

Laundry is a big deal in the world of slow fashion. Why? Because slow fashion is all about buying less new stuff and making our stuff last as long as possible via care and repair. In 4th grade, I took on the responsibility of laundry, grocery shopping, and cooking in our family. My grandma bought me a bunch of cookbooks. I clipped coupons and filed them away in a little plastic index card box. I learned how to write checks so I could pay at the grocery store. Somehow no one batted an eyelash at a 10-year old with a checkbook?! I love cooking to this day and l am constantly learning new recipes. I cook a full dinner almost every night and I am really good at grocery shopping on a tight budget! Laundry is different. As a kid, it was hard, boring work. We did not have a dryer, so as long as it wasn’t actively raining, I had to hang our laundry outside to dry. I had a boombox that I took outside to keep me company. One of my favorite things to do was record (using a cassette tape) the audio from television shows and listen to them while I did housework. It was a pre-podcast world, okay?! Figuring out how to remove stains was important because we couldn’t afford to replace clothing. And if I couldn’t get a spaghetti sauce stain out of my favorite sweatshirt, I would have to keep wearing it (stained or not) until I outgrew it. I read about laundry tips at the library. I clipped the “Hints from Heloise” column from the newspaper when there was laundry advice. I’ve been doing laundry for a really long time. But just as I haven’t cooked every recipe in the world, I haven’t solved every laundry problem. I’m learning as I go, too. I get better every year. There is no podcast or social media post that will teach you every laundry trick. There are just too many! But they can get you started on your own journey to solving your laundry quandaries and inspire you to learn more on your own along the way. Finding yourself with a laundry quandary? Here’s my life hack: google your stain issue and add “the spruce” at the end. I haven’t been able to stump The Spruce yet!

how to exit your lazy era — level up, stay motivated and make 2024 your best year🕯️
Firstly why do we even get stuck in our lazy era?
no motivation
you just faced a major failure
not seeing the results you want after working for so long
a way of procrastinating
an easy way to put away all your important task aside
“It’s easy to not do anything in life. It doesn’t even require any effort whatsoever.”
How to overcome this?
Plan your days earlier
Honestly we often hear people giving all sort of tips and tricks to be productive, but the thing is nothing works unless you have a vision for how your day is going to look like. Didn’t they say this?
“Visualization is the key to manifestation.”
2. Start your day with a boost of motivation
This is coming from a personal experience of mine. The only way I overcome my morning sickness was actually by quickly hitting the play button of my favorite motivational podcast as soon as I switch off my alarm. Now it feels like an autopilot mode. For real, try it out.
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” — Jim Ryun
3. Do what you love first thing first
Game-changer. It is one of the prime reason why I LOVE (not like) but LOVE getting up early after discovering the main hack of morning routine which is to do something that truly excites you to your very core.
It could be painting, reading, dancing, journaling, writing, singing, working out, walking, sitting outside sipping your favorite coffee, walking your dog, or literally not even doing anything. Whatever that soothes you, calms your soul and rejuvenates your being. BOOM! That’s exactly what you need to do as soon as you’re up.
For me personally, I love meditating, reading while sipping my coffee and just spending time with nature. The serenity and tranquility can’t be put into words to be honest!
“Slow morning is the recipe to my productivity for real.”
4. Sweating it out
Have you ever been in a situation (I'm sure we all have been in this one) where your body feels sluggish after lunch probably in the late noon? YES! It feels so horrible like you can’t keep your eyes open without consuming doses of caffeine.
Plus working from home is becoming a norm after the pandemic, therefore being stagnant is becoming more of a common trait that binds all of us together. Sitting still in front of your PC, sending emails through your handphone, recording content and et cetera.
This constant stagnation is actually preventing the daily movement our body needs to rejuvenate. Therefore, when we don’t get it that’s when the laziness kicks in. We do know the root problem right now and the root solution would be to move your body as often as you can.
Working out doesn’t need to fit into this standard practice social media has eluded us all by the frame of being in the gym. Honestly there’s more than that.
Hike
Run
Jog
Stroll
Swim
Sauna
As long as you are sweating, you’re good my friend.
5. Vision board
Vision board is one of the easiest, accessible and FUN thing you can do to get yourself out of the rut. I don’t think so we need to go all around again to get the gist of vision board but it would be incomplete if I don’t share this secret with you.
Make a physical and a digital board. The physical one plays a role to be sitting in a space where you spend most of your time at. For instance, your office, work-studio, hostel and et cetera.
And the digital one is as important as the physical one because most of the time we are indulged or I would say obliged to our gadjets these days. Therefore, by setting your vision board as your lock screen wallpaper is definitely going to give you the sense of awakening your mind needs whenever you feel you’re slacking off.
PS: Pinterest is a great tool you can start off with.
6. Use your bank balance as a source of motivation
This is such a good way to actually get you moving. It’s a source of trigger that makes you question yourself like:
How am I supposed to achieve all of my goals on the vision board if I am not taking any sort of action from my side?
That million-dollar home, vacation and experience is not going to come alive if you’re just sitting and wishing for it.
7. Read self help books
I am sure everybody who’s legit on
Medium
platform is an avid-reader. I am not going to speak about the power of books because you know it all. The key is just to pick the right books according to your current life’s situation.
The main gist today is to help you exit your lazy era. So here are some book recommendations from my side.
Atomic Habit by James Clear
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
Man’s Search for Meaning Viktor E. Frankl
The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
The Miracle Equation by Hal Elrod
Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz
The Concise 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene
The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins
Think Like A Monk by Jay Shetty
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Stillness is the key by Ryan Holiday
PS: What’s your favorite self-help book? Reply to this.
Stick till the very end because I am sharing with you the main HACK that nobody talks about.
8. Design your environment in a way that motivates you
We all have heard the phrase how your environment influences you. The least you could do is be conscious of how powerful your social circle is, the people whom you hangout with, the people whom you work with, the people you choose to have relationships with and the place you choose to live in.
It’s these little things that makes the most difference in your life at the end of the day.
9. Step out if that’s what you need
Honestly, a change of environment is what you need sometimes. Our body, out entire being recognizes when we are stuck in the same space for quite some time and this could be the #1 reason why you’ve been procrastinating. Probably you could do this:
Go to your favorite restaurant/café
Work from the library
Honestly choose a spot where you feel you could really maximize your potential and somewhere that actually motivates you to step up. Do better!
10. Allow yourself to be lazy at times
AHHHH! This is the magic pill I was speaking about. I realized nobody seems to tell you this but let’s be real. The only way to exit your lazy era is by giving yourself room to actually be lazy. You can’t expect yourself to transform overnight. You can’t expect to be productive 24/7. You can’t expect yourself to meet all the high standards you’ve set yourself up to.
And I want you to know this. It’s okay to be lazy sometimes. It’s okay to catch yourself not doing anything sometimes. But always remember this.
You shall only reward yourself to be lazy when you’ve absolutely fulfilled the promise you’ve made. The tasks you need to complete. The assignments you need to submit. The thesis you need to work on. The presentation you need to deliver.
Trust me if you implement all of the above habits, you would realize this:
“It’s the small changes in your daily life that you needed all along for your long-term success.”

Anna Kai believes in self-gaslighting. On TikTok, as @itsmaybeboth, she markets beauty products for Garnier, Nivea, and Nexxus Hair Care while dispensing relationship advice to her 1.3 million followers. “If you can gaslight yourself into believing the man that doesn’t love you actually loves you, then why can’t you gaslight yourself into believing you will find a man who actually does?”
For Blaine Anderson, finding the right partner is all about savvy marketing, which “great guys often SUCK at,” a note on her website exclaims. She has hacks for every possible scenario that can, and will, arise during the dating process: how to text like a “high-value man,” what first-date mistakes to avoid, how to make women obsessed, and the best ways to attract them without talking. In case you were curious, it starts with good posture and grooming. “If you haven’t been shopping since the Obama administration, it’s time,” she says in a video uploaded to TikTok in May.
“As a relationship therapist, I’ve literally spent my career studying the art of attraction and human psychology, so I know that these things work,” Kimberly Moffit, a Toronto-based psychotherapist, said in a TikTok video from 2022. Maybe your crush is shy and you want to know if he is “micro-flirting” with you? One tell-tale sign: dirty jokes. “An aggressive guy is just gonna hit on you,” she said, “but a shy guy is really gonna test the waters first.”
If you haven’t heard, it’s boom times for dating influencers. According to a new survey of single adults aged 18 to 62 conducted by the app Flirtini, one in four people rely on TikTok as their primary source of relationship information, and almost 50 percent of people surveyed turn to social media for dating advice.
This phenomenon has created an ecosystem of thoughtful, overzealous, trend-chasing dating influencers who think they know what’s best for you. The marketplace is now overrun with gurus offering up romantic hacks and how-tos to anyone who will listen. Everyone from credentialed therapists and life coaches to that annoying friend who just discovered bell hooks’ All About Love and wants to share everything they learned brands themselves a dating influencer these days. The effect has been seismic. On TikTok, the hashtags #datingadvice and #relationshipadvice have upwards of 16 billion views.
And it’s not all bad advice per se. Kai’s self-gaslighting tip is actually quite clever. (Kai and the other influencers mentioned in this story did not respond to messages seeking comment.) There’s just one problem: Relationship misinformation is spreading fast.
A growing number of young adults now get their news from TikTok, according to a 2023 Pew Research Center study, “so it makes sense that they’d turn to the app for relationship advice too,” says Liesel Sharabi, a professor at Arizona State University who specializes in the effect technology has on interpersonal relationships. The increased reliance on the platform as a go-to source for romantic guidance has led many users to form parasocial relationships with advice-giving influencers. Unlike face-to-face, IRL relationships, these tend to be one-way. But emotionally, they feel like the real thing.
“Someone might feel like they’re getting dating advice from a trusted friend because they’ve developed such a strong sense of familiarity and connection with that person,” Sharabi says. “The problem is that when it comes to dating, there are plenty of people who call themselves experts on TikTok without any sort of training or qualifications, which can make it difficult to separate fact from opinion.”
Not all advice is created equal. As dating influencers gain more traction across social media, the proliferation of relationship misinformation becomes harder to contain. This, Sharabi describes, is “false or misleading information about relationships that can’t be evaluated using scientific data and which may perpetuate harmful stereotypes.”
The increased spread of questionable dating advice is having real-world consequences. According to the Flirtini study, 46 percent of people faced relationship struggles after following TikTok advice, with 23 percent saying it led to a break up. It begs the question: Has our need to be plugged in all the time—let's face it, many of us are hooked on the booze of social media—outweighed our rationale as humans, leading people to look for advice from the wrong people?
“Relationship advice that is attention-grabbing may not always be the most sound or accurate to people’s actual relationship needs,” says Aparajita Bhandari, an academic at the University of Waterloo who’s conducted research on TikTok. “The way our current online attention economy works breeds content that is outrageous or tends toward misinformation because it is what goes viral and gets views. Unhealthy ideas or advice can spread so quickly on a platform like TikTok that it can be difficult to even trace back to one specific source.”
For some dating influencers, love is not actually the endgame—status and comfort are. There is a dedicated core of influencers who can teach you how to marry rich, live comfortably, and never work again. For them, it is all about “high-value” dating. Love is simply the icing on the cake to a life of worry-free, jet-setting luxury.
Shera Seven is a household name among this contingent of dating influencers, beloved for her matter-of-fact approach to modern partnership. In her eyes, love is nothing more than a business transaction. “Make sure the second date is a money date. The faster you get him to spend money, the faster he attaches to you,” Seven recommended in a recent video. “You’re seeing him as a provider, a baller—and he might not even see himself that way—but now that you are perceiving him that way, he’s going to start acting that way. Drag him into your delusion.”
Influencers with large followings like Seven, Cam Donnez, and Niko of The Daddy Academy carry an impression of social authority, and therefore credibility, says Makana Chock, a communications professor at Syracuse University. But something else is also at work. More and more, TikTok is being used as a search engine in the same way many of us use Google.
“Relationships are areas where people often feel the greatest insecurities and need advice. We are sometimes, however, reluctant to turn to personal contacts for help,” Chock adds. “We may be reluctant to reveal weaknesses, concerned about close others’ conflicting motivations, or skeptical about their relationship skills.”
But relying too heavily on TikTok’s algorithm has repercussions, especially in matters of the heart. “The algorithm isn’t necessarily incentivized to recommend the most scientifically sound advice,” Sharabi says. “It’s going to prioritize content that leads to engagement in terms of likes, followers, and views. What makes something go viral on TikTok isn’t necessarily that it’s good advice—in some cases, it might even be the opposite.”

AITA for arresting a teen because of a false tip?
I (45-55F) am an... extremely high-ranking employee for my Police Department in a large city. For the past 34 years now, our city has had a major cybersecurity and cyberattack problem. And I don't mean just a few people getting hacked every now and again, but entire city corporations and facilities shutting down because they've been hacked almost weekly. The only thing we know about these cyberattacks is that a hacker organization known as "Seven Stars" is behind many of the cyberattacks in the past 10 years. (Also, I must clarify that this is all public info. Look it up if you believe otherwise.)
Due to reasons that I cannot legally disclose, the only thing I am able to do for the city at the moment is get warrants for and arrest any people that are suspected of being affiliated or part of Seven Star's group. And a few days ago, me and my co-workers were tipped off that a prominent Seven Stars member was living in an apartment not far from here. So, we all packed up into our police cars and drove to the location.
Well, the tip turned out to be a hoax. We only found a teen there, and although he was uncooperative and resisted arrest, we couldn't ignore the obvious VPN on his laptop and pages upon pages of notes of other people's social media account info. We brought him back to the station and tried to talk to him, but he's been silent for hours now. We've decided to keep him here in custody for the night until we can proceed with the legal process or until he talks to us.
His arrest has caused quite a stir in the area, though. A lot of people are up in arms about this, and I can't blame them. However, it's pretty much impossible to just let him free now since we've started the legal process, and I can't just ignore all the evidence that was in his apartment room. Although the tip was false, we can't just ignore the mountain of evidence the kid had in his room and his unwillingness to talk to us. This would be so much easier if he just talked to us...
I'm curious to see what the general population thinks of this case. Perhaps if the backlash is so great that people from other countries and continents know about this case, I could speak to my higher-ups about possibly releasing the kid...

The French abaya situation simply explained by someone who doesn't give a fuck about all that (2)
[But not giving a fuck doesn't mean you can't educate and inform yourself about the situation]
Let's continue:
So, social media. One of the reasons abaya became such a big thing in France is because they became a new trend, a true fashion, on social media. You have lots of influencers promoting the abaya, the same way in French youth there is a true passion and fashion of all things coming from the Muslim countries, and it has been a phenomenon not unique to France or these recent years (already in 2016, Dolce and Gabbana had created a luxury line of abayas and hijabs). The problem however lies within the fusion the social medias created between pure fashion and religious influencing. A lot of the same young influencers and socila-media-teenage stars that promote the abaya will do so invoking wrong arguments such as "This is what a true Muslim woman shall wear" or "This is a piece of clothing that is part of Islam". Many social media accounts and so-called "teenage experts" will claim that the abaya is a perfect replacement of actual "religious clothing" for Muslim people, and this fueled an entire warped view by French youth of the abaya as a symbol of their faith.
This is actually the result of a vague coupling with the rise of extreme Muslim beliefs and practices in France - it is no news that ever since the terrorist attacks of the 2010s in France, Muslim extremists, terrorists and fanatical groups have been gaining power and influence on French territory. Everybody heard about the case of a small town which got so controlled by Muslim religious figures that they managed to forbid toy shops from sellng dolls with faces, and enforced a "no-face dolls" policy. It was a religious ban, not a government one, and yet everybody acted as if it was the actual law. And the influence of this more extreme and sterner, more forceful form of Islam is very open on social media, especially when it comes to young teens. There is a lot of TikTik videos and Instagram accounts and Snapchat circles centered for around around "hacks" and "tips" designed for Muslim kids and teens to practice their religion inside a public school. This ranges from videos and tutorials telling you how to perform your prayers and rites hidden from view in remote corners of schools, to "hacks" and "tips" about hiding burkas inside your bags so you can put them on when inside the school's ground. Somehow, the idea of wearing your religion upon you is treated as a fashion, and a new trend for kids is to do what looks like here as a religious resistance or religious offensive against laicity and secularism. And that is the very sad thing with social-media fed youths. They do not understand laicity and secularism - they do not understand how it works or why it is here. They do not see that as a way to keep the government neutral and to prevent a religion from taking control and crushing all of the others, the way Catholicism massacred all Protestants back in Renaissance, or the way the collaborationist government of WW2 used "Catholic" religious arguments to help the Nazis kill Jews. No, they see laicity as a personal attack on their faith, and as a way to crush their religion and to ban Islam as a whole (and only Islam, because of course, those same influencers insist that only Islam is discriminated by laicity, and that Christians and Jews are in league with the oppressors). For them, to be able to show and practice their religion in their home, in their mosques, in the street is not enough - they need to have it everywhere, including school, hospital and government. A very revealing census made people discover recently that more than half of the underage Muslims today believed that the law of the Coran was above any law of the Republic, and that they had the right to do illegal things if it was within their "religious right". This is very worrying because France works on the very reverse system, where the law of the Republic is supposed to come above and before the law of any religious text. If the law says for example that gay marriage is legal or that abortion is legal, no Biblical, Talmudic or Coranic argument should be stronger than this. That's how France is supposed to work, but a lot of kids do not understand that anymore, and cannot get in their heads that you can have religious freedom assured by a government that refuses all religion.
Edit: I checked back the census, and it was 57 percent of the young Muslims of France.
As a side note before going forward: know that all I talk about applies to PUBLIC schools. There are private schools that are religious in nature, oh yes. You have Christian schools, and Jewish schools, and Muslim schools all around France. But they are PRIVATE schools, who do not receive money from the government, and are not provided with teachers by the state. If you want to become a religious institution you can, but you have to cut tie with all public oganizations and all government-affiliated bodies. Once more, this is the essence of laicity: you can have private schools belonging to any kind of friggin religion (including the Star Wars religion if you want), as long as you stay within the law and do not do any illegal thing.
Ultimately, I believe that the opinion and reaction of the French Council of the Muslim Cult, and the words of the great imams of the largest French cities ill speak for themselves enough. In a first time, they objected to the interdiction of the abaya on a very simple ground: the abaya is a cultural outfit, not a religious one. In fact, they were very keen on reminding people that, by the canonical Muslim law, there is no actual true religious sign or religious clothing. You do not need to wear anything to be a Muslim, and they insisted on presenting the abaya as a fashion and a trend that came from Africa, and more precisely from the Maghreb. They also pointed out that maybe some women wore it out of a misguided religious sense, but that most of the time it was because of their body complex and because of dysmorphic reasons - they saw a lot of young women who preferred large, covering clothes such as those worn in Muslim countries because they wanted to hide their bodies or their perceived "flaws". And these people are of course right on all that, and you cannot deny what they say. However, in a second time they added a concession that is a very needed and important nuance: some of the great imams publicly added on television that, indeed, a part of the problem of the abaya is those that wear them. They explained that the young people who wore and promoted the abaya as a symbol of Muslim faith or as an emblem of Islam were clearly people who had a very lacking knowledge or misguided appreciation of Islam, and that a lot of non-expert, non-practicing Muslims actually said a lot of nonsense when involving themselves within the abaya debate. Of course, for religious experts such as themselves, banning the abaya is idiotic because the abaya is not religious. But, in a second time, they had to admit that there was also a lot of ignorant Muslims who treated the abaya as religious, and thus added fuel to the fire, or more exactly were the symptom of a deeper and bigger problem which is the misunderstanding and misteaching of the Muslim religion.
(Again, I have a few final points to highlight, so there will be a third and final post to this series)

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Sales

While there’s no shortage of social media platforms available today, choosing the right ones can be challenging. To help, we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 social media apps every student should be using in 2025 — not just for entertainment, but for education, growth, and staying connected.
1. LinkedIn: Your Professional Launchpad
Why It Matters to Students:
LinkedIn may not be the first app that comes to mind when thinking about social media, but it’s an absolute game-changer for students preparing for life after graduation. It’s a professional networking platform where students can build a digital resume, connect with industry professionals, and explore internships and job opportunities.
Key Features for Students:

Student Tip:
Start building your LinkedIn profile in your first year of college. Share your accomplishments and engage in meaningful content to grow your network over time.
2. Instagram: Visual Inspiration Meets Creativity
Why It Matters to Students:
Instagram is still one of the most influential platforms among students in 2025. While it’s popular for sharing photos and reels, it’s also a hub for student communities, educational creators, influencers, and even university pages that keep you updated on events and opportunities.
Key Features for Students:
Instagram Reels & Stories: Great for micro-learning, quick tips, and following student influencers who share useful hacks and content.

Group Chats: Use Instagram DMs to create study groups or collaborate on college events.
Live Sessions: Many educators and mentors host Q&A sessions, tutorials, and discussions on trending topics.
Student Tip:
Curate your feed to follow creators that motivate and educate you — don’t let it become just a scrolling trap.
3. Discord: The Ultimate Study + Hangout App
Why It Matters to Students:
Discord started as a platform for gamers, but today it’s become one of the most versatile apps for students. Whether you want to set up a study server, hang out with classmates, or participate in niche academic communities, Discord makes it seamless.

4. YouTube: Your On-Demand University

5. Reddit: Your Anonymous Learning Ally
Why It Matters to Students:
Reddit may not have the glitz of Instagram or the professionalism of LinkedIn, but it’s an underrated gem for students who want honest advice, community support, and in-depth discussions. It’s where students go when they want unfiltered opinions, answers, and academic camaraderie.
Key Features for Students:
Subreddits: Join communities like r/college, r/AskAcademia, r/engineeringstudents, or r/gradadmissions.

While the above five are our top picks, here are a few others that can still be extremely useful depending on your goals:
X (formerly Twitter): Great for following academic professionals and university accounts.
Telegram: Offers large group chats and channels for notes, books, and exam updates.
TikTok: Educational creators are growing fast here, though it requires self-discipline to avoid endless scrolling.
Final Thoughts: Making Social Media Work for You
Social media can be both a distraction and a superpower — the difference lies in how you use it. The platforms listed above are transforming the student experience in ways we couldn’t have imagined a decade ago. From getting career guidance on LinkedIn to learning physics on YouTube or joining a coding community on Discord, there’s something out there for every learner.
Pro Tips for Healthy Social Media Use:
Set time limits for scrolling apps to stay productive.
Use notifications wisely — turn off non-essential alerts.
Follow accounts that add value to your academic and personal goals.
Take regular digital detox breaks to refresh your mind.
In 2025, being digitally smart is just as important as being book smart. So, take control of your social media, align it with your student goals, and let these platforms help you grow, learn, and connect.

My friend’s room was pink, with dolls and flowers and a grand window overlooking Central Park. She had a poster that said “Chanel” above her bed, and a card above her desk that said, “Happy 13th!” We were lying on her bed on our stomachs, pink-painted toenails kicking in the air, wearing Brandy Melville tank tops and boy shorts. We’d watched the movie Thirteen the night before, and were scrolling through Pinterest photos of all the great ’90s models — Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Shalom Harlow — when she rolled over and put her phone down. “Ugh, I wish I looked like them!” she exclaimed. “If only I had a thigh gap.” To which I naively responded, “What’s that?” Related story This Lunar New Year, I'm Breaking a Damaging Cycle For My Kids' Sake She took me to the mirror and carefully compared our legs, pointing out how hers touched and mine didn’t — and since that day, I’ve kept careful tabs on the growing and shrinking of the negative space between my thighs. Four years later, it’s only gotten worse. Ever since I’ve found myself swept up in “SkinnyTok,” the stakes have become even higher: God forbid my thigh gap ever disappears. “SkinnyTok” and its other social media counterparts are the new faces of an age-old tradition when it comes to women and their weight. Society has had an obsession with our bodies for at least as long as there’s been media. In ancient times, women were sculpted; in medieval times, they were painted; in industrial times, they were stuffed into corsets; and in modern times, they are plastered on billboards and posted on our phone feeds. Recently, social media trends like SkinnyTok and Oatzempic have been gaining immense popularity. SkinnyTok includes a wide variety of content, ranging from truly well-meaning diet and exercise tips to harmful content that preys on teen girls like me (and all the women whose bodies have been scrutinized their entire lives). On this platform, people share weight loss “tips” and their own journeys. Meanwhile, “Oatzempic” is a dietary hack; it means having oat-based diets, particularly blending oats with water and lime juice to promote weight loss. My FYP and algorithm know me well; I am a teen girl, and I see more than one of these videos a day. And it’s impossible for them not to infiltrate the culture around my eating and my friends. Prom is coming up, and just a few weeks ago, my friend told me that she was “prepping.” When I asked her to explain, she said that she was going on a run every day, and having only a protein bar and small dinner. I asked her how she got this idea, and she showed me a video on SkinnyTok. After watching the video that inspired my friend, I was hooked on this account. I scrolled through for an hour, looking at all this woman’s tips and tricks. And when I got up to look in the mirror afterwards, I was about twenty pounds heavier than I was twenty minutes earlier — or at least, that’s how it felt. Most videos have pretty much the same message: Stories and hacks, often dangerous, on how to lose weight fast. Some videos are meant to serve as motivation. Just today, I watched a woman showing off her body on the treadmill, and the text over the video said, “Do it for the compliments. Do it for the jealous stares. Do it for the concerned looks.” Another video gives insight into how “skinny girls” live. “They view food as optional,” the woman explains, and then goes on to promote a type of jelly that has five calories and is as filling as a full meal — a jelly I tried for a few days before feeling like I was gonna puke. Those sorts of videos make me feel gluttonous: The woman talking to me has no problem turning down food, and yet I feel as if I’m always stuffing it in my face. Even without an eating disorder, it’s difficult to look away from this content. I get up feeling the need to go to the gym or walk 20,000 steps or maybe skip dinner, and when I don’t do these things, I’m left feeling like a failure. My friends and I share these videos with each other, spreading the content and falling victim to the perils. Thanks to SkinnyTok, my friends and I got the idea to count our calories in a shared notes app. Obsessively, I searched for the magic number attached to everything I ate during the course of any given day, and if my total got too high, it was time to call it quits. And yet no matter what I do, the message from the other side of the phone screen is clear: The “skinny lifestyle” is never going to be the one I’m leading, and my body is never going to look as good as theirs. Even without social media, the idea that girls can never be skinny enough would continue to infiltrate the teenage mind. But social media is particularly adept at spreading a message, and feeding into dark rabbit holes. Social media makes it all the easier to access this message and content; you no longer need to go looking for it, it finds you. It’s constantly in your face, telling you what you’re doing wrong and all the imperfections those wrong actions cause. To be sure, there are some truly helpful videos floating around the internet. I learned that, when I get a sweet tooth after dinner, it’s better to eat whipped cream and strawberries instead of ice cream; and I learned that portion control is always healthy, when done right. But most of what festers within trends around dieting never leads to anything good, because the line between healthy and dangerous is almost invisible — and the mind of a teenage girl is delicate, bordering on fragile, bordering on wired-like-a-booby-trap. Social media is addictive enough, but content about food and weight is even more so. It’s hard to look away, and it turns into an obsession with just the slightest indulgence. What’s worse, too, is that we seek it out. Once one video on the subject pops up, we’re hungry for more. We want to be skinny, and we want to know exactly how to do it. Everything talked about on SkinnyTok is like a carnival game designed to make us lose; if we girls don’t keep up with the diets and exercise, we surrender all of our progress. I wish I could go around eating whatever I want, whenever I want. And I know my friends do too, but society doesn’t allow for it, and social media keeps us in line. As if our own twisted consciences were not enough, we now have monitors in our pockets at every moment of every day, looking over our shoulders, inspecting our plates and our thigh gaps, and reprimanding us of our lapses. We are kids; we should be allowed the sweet indulgences of childhood. But instead, we’ve been tortured in our relationship with candy for almost as long as we’ve known just how good candy tastes. Eating has always been a perilous equation for girls, but now — thanks to our phones — the equation has gotten even more lopsided against us. There is no way for us to go anywhere near the kitchen, or the refrigerator, without having to answer to our social media feeds. And as a result, our minds are as full of bad ideas as our stomachs are empty of meaningful calories. Source link

Forty-one state attorneys general penned a letter to Meta’s top attorney on Wednesday saying complaints are skyrocketing across the United States about Facebook and Instagram user accounts being stolen, and declaring “immediate action” necessary to mitigate the rolling threat.
The coalition of top law enforcement officials, spearheaded by New York attorney general Letitia James, says the “dramatic and persistent spike” in complaints concerning account takeovers amounts to a “substantial drain” on governmental resources, as many stolen accounts are also tied to financial crimes—some of which allegedly profits Meta directly.
“We have received a number of complaints of threat actors fraudulently charging thousands of dollars to stored credit cards,” says the letter addressed to Meta’s chief legal officer, Jennifer Newstead. “Furthermore, we have received reports of threat actors buying advertisements to run on Meta.”
“We refuse to operate as the customer service representatives of your company,” the officials add. “Proper investment in response and mitigation is mandatory.”
In addition to New York, the letter is signed by attorneys general from Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the District of Columbia.
“Scammers use every platform available to them and constantly adapt to evade enforcement. We invest heavily in our trained enforcement and review teams and have specialized detection tools to identify compromised accounts and other fraudulent activity,” Meta says in a statement provided by spokesperson Erin McPike. “We regularly share tips and tools people can use to protect themselves, provide a means to report potential violations, work with law enforcement and take legal action.”
Account takeovers can occur as a result of phishing as well as other more sophisticated and targeted techniques. Once an attacker gains access to an account, the owner can be easily locked out by changing passwords and contact information. Private messages and personal information are left up for grabs for a variety of nefarious purposes, from impersonation and fraud to pushing misinformation.
“It's basically a case of identity theft and Facebook is doing nothing about it,” said one user whose complaint was cited in the letter to Meta's Newstead.
The state officials said the accounts that were stolen to run ads on Facebook often run afoul of its rules while doing so, leading them to be permanently suspended, punishing the victims—often small business owners—twice over.
“Having your social media account taken over by a scammer can feel like having someone sneak into your home and change all of the locks,” New York's James said in a statement. “Social media is how millions of Americans connect with family, friends, and people throughout their communities and the world. To have Meta fail to properly protect users from scammers trying to hijack accounts and lock rightful owners out is unacceptable.”
Other complaints forwarded to Newstead show hacking victims expressing frustration over Meta’s lack of response. In many cases, users report no action being taken by the company. Some say the company encourages users to report such problems but never responds, leaving them unable to salvage their accounts or the businesses they built around them.
After being hacked and defrauded of $500, one user complained that their ability to communicate with their own customer base had been “completely disrupted,” and that Meta had never responded to the report they filed, though the user had followed the instructions the company provided them to obtain help.
“I can't get any help from Meta. There is no one to talk to and meanwhile all my personal pictures are being used. My contacts are receiving false information from the hacker,” one user wrote.
Wrote another: “This is my business account, which is important to me and my life. I have invested my life, time, money and soul in this account. All attempts to contact and get a response from the Meta company, including Instagram and Facebook, were crowned with complete failure, since the company categorically does not respond to letters.”
Figures provided by James’ office in New York show a tenfold increase in complaints between 2019 and 2023—from 73 complaints to more than 780 last year. In January alone, more than 128 complaints were received, James’ office says. Other states saw similar spikes in complaints during that period, according to the letter, with Pennsylvania recording a 270 percent increase, a 330 percent jump in North Carolina, and a 740 percent surge in Vermont.
The letter notes that, while the officials cannot be “certain of any connection,” the drastic increase in complaints occurred “around the same time” as layoffs at Meta affecting roughly 11,000 employees in November 2022, around 13 percent of its staff at the time.
