Creators I love you but it's time to wake up
Among rumors about our tumblr user data being sold off to Midjourney/Generative AI, recent Extremely transphobic events (that have been ongoing) coming to a head, another extremely concerning internet censorship bill being pushed in upper levels of government, and a general air of frustration over how the site belongs to and is operated by perhaps the second stupidest CEO (second only to twitters own) of our age, I'm very done with the last few vestiges of what the old internet held for artists.
And if you're reading this, you probably are too.
I know we're tired. We are all tired. It is not always viable to pack up shop and move, again and again and again.
From tumblr to twitter to anywhere else we've ever grown up posting, things no longer work. Our audiences are kneecapped by aggressive and hostile algorithms, our reach is abysmal - if we aren't shadow-banned or silenced for one (transphobic) reason or another, we're thrust into an ever growing pit of hostility where the only thing that drives clicks is fighting and contention.
We're tired. We're so fucking tired. We aren't businesses, we aren't content mills, we cannot keep this pace that modern social media has set for us, to wring every ounce of creativity out of us to profit from and leave us rotting.
The key to staying afloat here, and I cannot stress this enough, is to stay connected to your peers.
Pack up and move as units if you must. Exodus from the sites that are killing us. Push your entire friend group of artists to move from one site to the next that promises you a kinder experience.
Art drives movements, it drives change, it is all that encompasses being human. If you take that away from the shitty places, they will be left with nothing but a cesspit of inhumanity and the people who follow you will be more incentivized than ever to move with you.
Yes, this is terrifying. There are no guarantees. There never was, and never are, and never will be.
But stay connected. Stay human.
Support each other and be willing to hold hands and jump when we all - as a group - need to jump from the flames we're all trying to convince ourselves wont kill us before rescue comes.
Rescue isn't coming, rescue will be found hand in hand with each other. I'm offering you my hand, please take it. There's always a new start, there are always helping hands reaching for you. You have to look up from the doom-scroll long enough to see and take them.

Maaan I love the optimistic advice "keep practicing and you'll get better at art" as much as the next artist, but it always rubs me the wrong way when that evolves into "just keep practicing and you WILL 100% succeed and CAN get into the industry."
It changes from good general advice to implying you're just doing something wrong if still haven't "made it" yet. Not in the industry? Well, you just haven't worked hard enough, obviously, as if there aren't plenty of other factors that play into "succeeding” in a highly competitive industry like art.
Don’t let advice that’s supposed to be encouraging turn into something discouraging 😭
#there’s a lot more to worming your way into the art industry than just. studying art real hard and working your bones off#hard work only gets you so far.#a lot of ‘success’ also starts at childhood and that goes for any industry#having supportive family and even better if they’re financially supportive#good early education. good physical and mental health. the ability to focus and do the same task over and over for hours#good social skills- because networking gets you a lot further than pure talent alone.#growing up in a convienaint location to even network at all. or the power to travel to such a location.#natural talent puts you ahead. brains work differently so it’s ignorant to pretend natural talent isn’t a thing#some take to a skill faster than others because their brain comes out more wired for it. so their skills develop easier and faster#music never came to me. I can’t hear the tone of my own voice most of the time. I DID study music and take mystic classes as a teen#it’s insulting to be banged over the head with ‘if you study music you’ll start to get it.’ I’m 28#I know myself and have tried during an age which music is easier to learn and yet I did not. I don’t have talent for it- my brain doesn’t-#-grasp it. the same with any art. some will struggle more to learn visual art ‘good enough’ for the industry#and implying that they just don’t get it yet becasue they haven’t tried hard enough is insulting#you can always get better. always always!! but sometimes grinding is just… grinding. fruitless and painful#I failed algebra twice as a teen. I couldn’t understand punnet squares till my 20s.#saying work harder and you’ll become a math professor would be insulting. implying I never tried to learn at all.#implying that even tho I took tutoring multiple times that maybe. if I just took one more. poor id suddenly be more able.#people work hard and it just clicks and 10 years later you’re in a great art industry job… you’re not the rule. you’re the exception#ugggh sorry :p just frustrated. sometimes people just don’t realize the kind of luck they’ve had in life and it irritates me

people are scared. they don’t feel safe, they don’t trust their neighbors, they don’t trust their friends and family, and they certainly do not trust us. so it is downright absurd the way so many leftists will either shame/blame Americans for not spontaneously rising up against our oppressors or irresponsibly call for general strikes, rent strikes, tax strikes - without any regard for the very real consequences associated with such actions.
people are afraid. they do not want to end up homeless. they do not want their kids to starve. we are living under a brutal neoliberal competitive individualist society - “everyone for themselves” is the rule, not the exception. we are taught - and we see and experience day after day - that the only person we can ever trust to look out for us is ourselves.
and so - is it not absurd to expect people to just stop paying their rent or taxes or showing up at work because some arrogant out-of-touch asshole on the internet said it would solve all our problems?
sorry, but we cannot skip all the preparations that must come before these collective actions can succeed - the most important of which is to build trust among our community members. and that is not something we can just tell people to do. we have to show them. we have to learn to trust and be trusted, we have to learn how to care for and about one another.
people will be much more open to the risks associated with collective action when they feel confident that their community has got their backs. the reality is that our liberation will not quick, easy, and painless. it’s going be difficult. there will be hardships. if we cannot learn to look out for one another, we will be crushed, brutally and mercilessly, and we may not get another chance.

Hi femme! I was wondering if you could do something about not talking shit and staying out of drama? Tysmmm I love what you do and you're so amazing <33
Hi love! Thank you so much! This comment made me smile from ear to ear <333
I would say there are a few easy motivators to opt out of gossiping/stay out of drama:
Staying silent in the realm of gossip/drama/people talking shit saves your reputation by default. Opting out of drama is one of the best PR campaigns you can implement for yourself. This strength allows you to pursue/strengthen opportunities, connections, and relationships with those who succumb to this low-brow energy and no longer have access due to their desire for instant gratification
Remember that any energy and time spent investing in drama/gossip correlates to less energy/time you can spend working on yourself, your goals, and the things you enjoy. With this in mind, involving yourself in gossip sounds like a lose-lose situation to me
Staying out of negativity will almost certainly lead you to be a more positive person by default. Like attracts like at the end of the day. Don't let other people's drama, hangups, or issues get you down. You deserve better than that
Hope this helps xx

How To Improve Your Social Skills 💬🥂📱✨
Pay close attention when others are speaking. Show that you're engaged in what they are saying, maintain eye contact, and providing verbal cues like "I see" or "interesting." Ask questions.
Good eye contact shows interest in the conversation. But avoid staring excessively in a frozen state, as it can make others uncomfortable.
A warm smile and open body language can make others feel more comfortable around you.
Work on your conversational skills, including starting and ending conversations, asking open ended questions, and finding common topics of interest.
Try to understand and empathize with the feelings and perspectives of others. This helps create trust.
Small talk is essential for building rapport. Practice starting conversations with light, non controversial topics and gradually steer them toward more meaningful subjects.
Confidence is key to effective social interaction. Work on building your self esteem and self confidence through self affirmations and positive self talk.
If you experience social anxiety, try deep breathing exercises or, visualization. Try to focus your attention on something. I used to have a lot of social anxiety so I would hold a drink in my hand to keep me centered and focused.
Familiarize yourself with cultural and social norms to ensure you're behaving appropriately in different situations so you don't look out of place or rude.
Social skills are like any other skills; they improve with practice. Start with friends or in less intimidating social settings to build your confidence.
Pay attention to nonverbal cues such as body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. These signals often convey more than words.
Avoid dominating conversations. Give others the chance to speak and actively listen when it's their turn.
Show respect for others by using polite language, saying "please" and "thank you," and being considerate of their feelings and opinions.
Having a broad range of interests and knowledge can give you more to talk about and connect with others over. Learn, learn, learn.
Ask friends for feedback on your social skills. They can help pin point areas you can improve upon.
Join clubs, groups, or activities that relate to your interests. This helps you meet new people and practice social skills in a comfortable setting.
Observe individuals with strong social skills and learn from their interactions. Note how they engage with others and start to incorporate some of their techniques.

It took me a really long time, almost 2 years, to finally get up and actually go to my local game dev drink up. It was just something that was so intimidating to me, and I couldn’t fathom going to them alone. I was experiencing a lot of imposter syndrome as someone who’s actually still a student and hasn’t worked in the industry yet.
But then I went for the first time last January and I’ve missed 2 or 3 since. The second Thursday of every month has become one of my most anticipated days because I get to go to a bar and talk to a bunch of nerds who like the things I like. I’ve become friends with people because of this event. I’ve made connections with people that I don’t want to lose, not because they feel valuable to me as an opportunity for work but because I will genuinely miss getting to talk to everyone.
So moral of the story for anyone nervous about attending events like this. You’re walking into a room full of nerds so nerdy they decided to make a career out of it. You can walk into a group of people and be like “so what games has everyone been playing recently?” And boom you will be locked into and hour long conversation with people telling you about the things they love. Most times I end up standing on the street for an hour and a half after the bar closes because we don’t want to stop talking!
