i know that uhura’s role in tos was written to be like a radioman (the guy in wwii movies who carries the phone on his back sometimes) meaning that the “communications officer” role evolved from radioman to linguist in the time since tos aired. but that makes uhura in tos really interesting with a retrospective read of her character, applying things novels and later iterations of her have fleshed out, because she doesn’t do any visible linguistic work in any tos episode. she does security and navigation and piloting and engineering which sort of makes her seem like a valuably flexible sort of many-skilled officer.
it was probably both enterprise with hoshi and the 2009 movie that really cemented the idea of “communications officer means linguist or at the very least polyglot” instead of it just being an uhura-quirk. uhura in the 2009 movie does a lot of engineering/operating work of comm equipment and is implied to speak a lot of languages on top of be able to interpret subspace “noise,” so to speak (like, there’s no way it’s radio. it can’t be radio. star trek takes place across distances of lightyears—when they say “signal,” i’m assuming it’s not radio). and of course strange new worlds has run with the linguistics angle and made it even more explicit that yes she studies linguistics, linguistics is a core part of starfleet academic infrastructure, to the point where whole episode plots are written around the act of translation.
the retrospective addition of this expertise to uhura makes what she is in tos a character even more focused on leadership and, idk, becoming something like a captain, because she doesn’t seem all that specialized. she’s more of a kirk-like character, or janeway or sisko, characters that have a specialized skill but have set it aside mostly to pursue some sort of command. obviously this wasn’t the intention of her character. writers of uhura have mostly just stumbled on the idea of her as a polyglot (according to wikipedia, first introduced in the novel uhura’s song, so) and been like “neat idea! makes sense! explorers need to learn languages!” and kept doubling down on that idea until we get to an origin-story uhura in snw that (wildly) speaks 37 languages, for whatever definition of speak or language, i guess.
what all this overthinking on my part has generated is this idea of uhura very much like a futuristic-captain aubrey or a captain sisko not nailed down to one station, hanging off the shrouds of a solar-sail ship’s rigging, looking beyond, in the most romantic and idealized version of an explorer. i think a lot of people read/write female characters as being more down-to-earth than the whimsical leader-on-the-sea or more nurturing than than the hardened captain-of-a-ship, partly why janeway and burnham are so wonderful to me. but it’s fun to imagine tos uhura being the exploring-captain archetype, amongst the political structures of the 60s. like the additions to her character over the years have solidified that romantic adventurer portrait of her in tos, when the idea of her in command would be the least welcome.
and the fact that she was shown to be excited about a solar sailing ship in snw, like sisko was in ds9 for that one episode, i think emphasizes this read of her—and that her character-journey in snw is going to be how she goes from bookish linguist to “hanging-on-a-shroud-on-a-sunsail-ship” looking out to “sea”.

Something something, Raph having no one to lean on because he’s the oldest sibling and his father while physically there isn’t emotionally there
Something something, Raph being pretty good at keeping it to himself but donnie noticing how lacking their father is with them and how Raph can’t lean on anyone but especially their own father
Something something, Donnie taking on a more parentified role in regards to Splinter because he can’t help but feel how unfair it is that Raph has to take care of not only himself but three younger siblings and he doesn’t know how to show his love for his older brother but he wants to ease his pain as much as he can
Donnie and Raph being the ones who noticed Splinter’s absence the most and having to make sure the others are ok even if they hurt because if they can’t help their brothers what’s the point of them?

#— ai rambles#sorry guys i’m still stuck here but i think these additions and that thread shed so much light on the deeper meaning behind gege’s latest#sketch of satoru’s genpuku ceremony that i just had to share it here with you all#im spiraling so bad bc the distinction between genpuku and seijin no hi is so important even though gege put that ? there#like hes just a guy 😭 but like him choosing the former rly speaks volumes about the tone and weight of that moment#to me it looks like seijin no hi is like more personal and celebratory while genpuku is a public and duty bound ritual#it’s not just about becoming and adult it’s sort of a contract and stepping into service taking on responsibilities and pledging loyalty to#the clan 🥲#so for satoru this moment wasn’t symbolic it was binding#now his short hair makes so much more sense bc it wasn’t just a style choice#it was part of a rigid formal performance of identity expected from the heir of one of the big three clans#the name change thing is mind blowing to me like WHAT DO U MEAN#did satoru have another name before that? bc that’s just so sad 🥲#if satoru is the name he took on at genpuku then it’s not just a name but a role and that just makes him all the more tragic#like he’s long buried that younger self in service of the one who could carry the weight of being the strongest 🥲#also i think the clans have their own private education systems like satoru didn’t need to attend jujutsu tech but he CHOSE to#that in itself is a subtle act of rebellion and so the genpuku basically is the clans last attempt at control to symbolically tether him#back to his roots and the irony is so heartbreaking bc by accepting the genpuku satoru traded lifelong obligation for the freedom to attend#school outside of clan jurisdiction it’s literally tragedy hidden in plain sight that satoru’s autonomy always came at a cost#that part with kento shot me dead bc once again this sketch of gege isn’t just for nothing#ofc there’s something deeper in it 😭#GEGE WHEN I CATCH YEOOWWW#[ ♡ ] — satoru

Yk, I hate that adaptations keep making Peter a high schooler, and not just because it means he never evolves, but because the adaptations now also include wider Marvel, whitch usually (thanks to the MCU) is at the modern day stage with legacy characters and new age teen heroes, meaning that Peter is taking up Miles' spot and you can really tell when they put him next to someone like Kamala Khan or Sam Alexander who are Miles' pals. Tho Peter taking Miles' stuff is just a modern issue overall, just look at MCU whitch just stole and re-skinned Miles' personality, characters, story-beats, even the costume to an extent and then made it worse.
agree 👏
#sci speaks#sci. release the script doctor you did where it actually was miles in the mcu and peter parker is a grown ass man.#it was funny. peter was a really bad intern at stark industries#who stole stark tech on the sly.#and of course. tony catches wind of this because he has cameras everywhere and. those cameras happened to also catch.#him sneaking out of work as spider-man.#and tony ropes him into civil war or whatever because otherwise he could Literally press charges.#and peter's :((((((((#begrudgingly joins tony's side.#in the post credit we see that he's been gathering stark tech to build miles morales some very neato webshooters.#and voil.a. miles is the star of homecoming and. peter is the mentor figure that encourages miles to start small.#miles: but YOU teamed up with the avengers a#peter: do as i SAY not as i DO.#sighs. so little would have to change.#but no more child soldiers and no more over exposure of tony stark. fantastic. superb.#also showing a slightly sneakier peter parker who isn't exactly entirely morally upstanding.#steals from billionares while they're not looking to serve the people who need it.#robin hood figure !! sexy. would falll to my knees for a peter parker like that. would be my favourite on screen peter ever.#and it puts him more in an interesting spot with the villains in the movies too.#if we still go with the route of all the villains being affiliated with stark tech and stealing / using stark tech#then peter is like. in a more complex role in the story. he stole stark tech too. is he better than the criminals?#he uses it for good. he thinks. but that's his judgement.#just i think it would be neat. all the “you're just like me” rhetoric falls so flat in those movies.#but what if it hit different.#but that would be if marvel had the courage to make a complex spider-man movie#where peter parker is allowed to make morally complex decisions asides for “uhh. stupid kid makes stupid mistakes”#sci talks movies

That Modern(ish) Tauverse AU where we have Nightmare and his four adoptive sons now has this lil collection of Bad Reference Doodles lol!
#tauverse#Heads up the sizing for the brothers is... inaccurate?#i mean. Horror does outgrow the rest of them but like. Dust + Killer look miniscule becayse they were my warm-ups haha!#Night still gets the halo in this one but only for Aesthetic Purposes (still just a manifestation of his magic)#Killer. the eldest + official heir to Night's Company? yeahhh he's punk/grunge. his best friend is the thrift store#and he wears a bunch of leather and spikes + belts + old shirts lol#Dust meanwhile lives in his hoodie + wears headphones all the time + tries to hide himself as much as possible#Dust has the Big Backpack full of a bunch of random supplies but also both his and Killer's school stuff.#Horror adopted the 'soft boy' aesthetic with light sweaters + earth tones + the shoulder bag w/ pins pretty early on#as he got bigger and broader he just... couldn't abandon the style.#and Cross is still just a lil guy. he wears a lot of comfy clothes + carries around his favorite stuffy on his#belt loop thanks to a carabiner#Night lets the boys choose their own outfits and behaviors so long as they don't get caught committing crimes. and so long as#they dress up a little for his Work Events#these are pretty much their continued aesthetics into adulthood. except Killer sometimes ditches the jackets and Dust adopts zipper hoodies#(also Dust's headphones are painted red. a gift from his deceased brother from when they were both very very little)#side note!!!#in the future? Killer *does* take on a bigger role in Night's company. but on the side he's a really passionate#chemical engineer. it's what he went to uni for.#Dust goes into building high-tech prosthetics after Killer's accident. though he always wanted to be a mechanical engineer so it's great!#Horror I think would find his passion in physics still. but it'd be used to work in a museum or interactive lab#he's like the guy they pull out to explain things to kids on fieldtrips or give talks to the community when stuff is going on!#then Cross? well. i think he still goes into literature. he's a damn-good author and seems like Night's least-successful kid intitally...#well. private investigator is his side gig. he researches into cases others won't take due to risks!#he's good at it lol.#OKAY. i'm done. i have to get back to work. i just had to post these lol

Brennan describes the inside (for lack of a better word) of the Occulus Thalamus as "a swirling nebula of glimmering potential, cresting eternally beyond the threshold of being," before turning instead to describe, for ease of mortal imagination, a physical palace.
I am curious to know if this, like other aspects of Aeorian technology that we've seen, is some kind of dunamantic distillation; if the "infinity" that is described, this monumental repository of data, is in fact an innovation created from Aeor's technological explorations of a beacon and dunamis itself. It would certainly negate any of my idle considerations of how you'd even store that much data, given the space(s) inside the beacons are suggested to be fairly infinite.
It would also track as a method of collection, given the other uses of the beacons in Exandria as a method of holding a soul and then returning it to another vessel, as well as its use for observation and learning; the Dynasty uses consecution for gaining perspective and learning about the world, and the Aevilux apparently use their own rituals as a method of external observation of themselves for learning who they are. Both of these have their downsides, of course, but overall they seem to be employed for thoughtful introspection.
If the Occulus Thalamus was based on the same concept and arcane background, it certainly showcases the dark side of the impulse to observe and learn and record, in excess and without consent. The same drive to learn about the world, to understand those outside of oneself, to connect with the world, used instead for all-encompassing surveillance and control.

She doesn't like the civilian clothes or what's left of the CP uniforms. Her hoodie and jacket are way better. And she's probably the last person on earth to own low rise jeans like this. Not that she doesn't have other clothes this is just objectively superior

Ok why did my own AU idea suddenly go from just, "Viktor gets taken in by Benzo with canon divergence" to "Viktor gets taken in by Benzo and later becomes a member of the Firelights" now? Hey it sounds more fun there so I'm not complaining!

"The things that are not only fun right away, but stay fun and sustainable for a long time, are creating characters that are wrestling with a heroic problem that I can keep coming back to. [...] Pick someone [..] with something to lose, not only on a physical level but an emotional one as well. Pick characters who care about the world they are in, and you will find yourself swept away by adventure very quickly indeed."
