What's most interesting to me about Daggerheart from a non-mechanical perspective is where it is positioned in the market and what that could mean for the industry as a whole if it does well.

As a game, it sits in the space between the crunchier and/or more traditional games like Pathfinder or DnD and the more story-forward indie sphere. It feels to me like it is designed as an on-ramp game; if you pick up Daggerheart as your first game and decide you want to try something more traditional, you have some basic familiarity with that structure that would make it easier, and likewise, if you come out of it wanting a tighter focus on story or less of a combat focus, you've got a foundation of understanding for the ethos of a FiTD or PbtA game. It also would work well I think as a game to ease a DnD diehard into those other types of games (or vice versa though I think that's a bit less necessary lol).

I am not saying that is necessarily unique to Daggerheart, of course, nor is this a comment on how well it does it any of the things it is attempting (I've personally enjoyed playing and DMing it quite a bit but YMMV), but what makes it particularly interesting and makes me want it to succeed is that Darrington Press has a distribution deal with Macmillan. That puts it in non-hobby stores, brick and mortars and libraries, since you can get it through say, Ingram, which is not true of most games outside of dnd and pathfinder (you have no idea how many times I've tried to get a game for our library only to get told none of our suppliers carry it. I weep). Reading through the book, it takes on a very introductory tone at first, spending a decent chunk of time on how to approach playing and good table etiquette before getting into mechanics. They also splurged on less text-dense pages, something a lot of games can't afford to do, which makes actually reading the damn thing less intimidating. The physical cards and the character sheet sidecars are also very newbie-friendly. Plus, the upcoming card creator will introduce players to homebrewing in a way that's very easy to pick up. It's absolutely nerd-middle-schooler bait.

They also learned their lesson from Candela Obscura and front loaded the Touchstones page and made it part of the early narrative flow of the text, and called out some of the specific mechanics influenced by specific games, which means a newbie to the space could read that and see, for instance, "oh the map making part was something I wanted to see more of, maybe I'll play The Quiet Year!"

If it does well, specifically if it does well in Target and Barnes and Noble and the like, where parents and grandparents can pick it up for their kids, I think it is positioned to help the TTRPG space grab new players and introduce them to other games in a way that DnD decidedly does not. It's putting that Critical Role corporate structure and money to work in a way that could be helpful to other games as well. And that is a very, VERY exciting prospect to me.

shark! reader would honestly start off quite scared of konig tbh … they’re well aware of what cthulu hybrids and have seen their affects firsthand, the delirious, rabid glint in a victims eyes and the macabre foam that would bubble up past their lips. and not only was konig a hybrid of that species, but the operator of kortac, one who had seen hundred of battles and could snap a man’s neck as naturally as he blinked an eye.

however , being the only two marine hybrids in kortac means they’re both drawn to each other by nature, and furthermore shoved by missions that required time underwater that only you and konig could wrangle.

it’s a slow process. the flick of a tentacle or small swish of a fin that would signal direction or start ambushes had progressed into little inside jokes. konig sometimes acting in place of a remora, using his suckers to help clean off grime or stray corals off your tail. and maybe he isn’t as bad as the eldritch killer you’d made him out to be.

now there’s a heavy tentacle wrapped around your shoulder, and now your fin brushing against the plated guards on his shin feels even more like home than warm tides that held you as a child.

the relationship you eventually get into is a change for the both of you, so civilian compared to the violence and hardness that you were both raised in. learning to use tentacles to hold instead of strangle. sitting on the ocean floor and watching as fish dart around, your tail pulling him a little closer as he leans his head onto your shoulder. tentacles pulling you against konigs chest and strong arms around your waist when your nocturnal instincts go too far out of whack for his preference.

everybody join me in my beautiful imagination space in a sort of eldritch au where gale was a respected academic working with mystra until he started researching increasingly unhinged conspiracy theories so she publicly broke off their involvement in a way that ruined his reputation and now he's a shut-in mad scientist collecting occult texts and trying to solve a strange string of murders and astarion is still a vampire that just escaped cazador and in the course of trying to lie low has just moved in to this rotting seaside town on the outskirts of waterdeep and in order to ingratiate himself to establish his new identity he becomes gale's unofficial assistant and eventually idk something happens where a hunt goes wrong and astarion is in gale's lab dripping blood eyes glowing, eerily lit by the fireplace behind him, fangs glinting in the light and drained corpse under his feet and gale realizes he's been the monster he's been researching all along and gets horny about it. do you see my vision.
