Word Diary

Chapter one: Whelve

Summary: Tom comes back from a hectic year to find his ex from his teens in his parents’ house. She’s got big plans for herself and all of Tom’s brothers know, he’s a risk for her.

Series warnings: Smut, exes to lovers, pining, additional warnings per chapter

Tom came home for the holidays on December twentieth of 2020 but was not expecting to see what he saw in his childhood home on that day. His mother sits there indulging in conversation with a friend she’s had since Tom was born.

“Tom! Honey! Look who’s here!” She points to her friend who’s been playing with a puppy.

“Hello Holly. It’s good to see you.” But it’s still really awkward given the history… but then again, Holly doesn’t know the history.

“Tom honey, come see Rosalind’s new puppy! His name is Cerberus.” Tom’s brows raise a little more when he hears the name.

Instead of kneeling and playing with the puppy immediately, he stands there for a second wondering if this is real or not.

He hears laughing from the kitchen, and then his younger brother Sam walks out with Holly’s daughter, Rosalind and a few dishes for dinner.

Once he sees Rosalind, everything stops for him. She’s wearing that smile she used to wear around him when they were alone and no one knew. The one he hasn’t seen in years. The one he’s dreamt of. The one Harrison has made fun of him for fantasizing over. The one he’s had no luck finding in any other girl. The one he fell in love with right before he left for carpentry school. It still hasn’t changed.

She looks up for a moment at him and her smile fades so she quickly leaves with Sam as he tells another story.

Harry of course notices and texts the brothers group chat calling an emergency meeting.

BROTHERS GROUPCHAT

Harry:Meeting in Paddy’s room. ASAP

Sam:why?

Paddy:Yeah and why my room?

Harry:All will be explained. Just get there

Tom:I just got home. Can it wait?

NON FAMOUS HOLLANDS

Harry: Tom’s still in love with Roz. He’s either gonna be a dick or a loser if we don’t talk to him about it. That’s why we need a meeting.

Sam: Seriously? Still? He was such a dick last time they saw each other.

Paddy: Agreed

Sam: If he starts acting like that again she might not just leave for Paris for school, she could leave forever

Harry: Thus why something. Needs. To. Be. Done.

Paddy: Meeting in my room

All of the brothers get to Paddy’s room in a short few minutes. And Tom is told to sit on his bed while the twins get ready to interrogate him and paddy guards the door.

“I saw the way you looked at her Tom,” Harry starts.

Tom tries (and fails) to bullshit through this conversation, “what are you talking about?”

“We’re talking about you being awkward about Roz being here,” Sam chimes.

“Roz is like a sister to us, and we’ve seen you fuck it up with her to the point where she left the fucking country,” Harry says, “so whatever your thinking about her, stop. She’s too good for you and everyone knows it but you apparently.”

Tom gets angry at his younger brothers for trying to tell him what to do. He has since they were all little… well, little-er. “I don’t know what you’re talking about. Rosalind left so she go to ballet school in Paris. That had nothing to do with me.”

Now it’s Paddy’s turn to speak up, “Oh yeah? When was the last time you talked to her?”

5 years almost. Right before he went to carpentry school.

“Exactly.” “We lost a sister because you were a fucking asshole.” Sam crosses his arms. “And she probably wouldn’t have come back if it wasn’t for that other dick.” His twin copies his gesture.

‘Does Roz have an ex?’ He wonders. She does not. The dick that Tom’s brothers are referring to is Rosalind’s father, who just got his mistress pregnant. Rosalind moved back to England to support her mother during the divorce.

“Look, mates,” Tom starts, “do you even know what happened between me and Roz?” It’s silent for a moment. “Exactly. So don’t assume that just because I used to like her, I’ll automatically still be in love with her. I’m not. Nor have I ever been!”

What Tom didn’t know was that Rosalind heard everything that just happened.

Instead of busting in on them, she just goes back downstairs and decides to text Sam that his dish was ready.

“Shit, my foods done,” he states, “let’s call this a wrap for now and follow up later.”

The lot of them sit at the table eating the food Sam made.

Most if the conversation is made up by Tom’s parents and Rosalind’s mother. She compliments Sam on the food.

“Thank you so much, Holly. Roz made desert too, and it looks absolutely delicious. What’d you say it was?” Sam asks the girl.

“Lavender vanilla bean beignets.” She informs.

“My mouth is already watering with anticipation! That sounds lovely.” Tom’s father comments.

Roz has always been bashful when someone compliments her. Tom has always found it adorable… which is why he would compliment her any chance he had when they were teenagers.

“My friend’s mother taught me the recipe. She said it was a family recipe and I’m not allowed to tell anyone… so please don’t ask.” She jokes.

“Damn. That sucks. I was gonna ask for it.” Sam says.

Rosalind smiles lightly.

“So, Rosalind,” Nikki calls for the girl’s attention, “do you have any plans for tomorrow?”

“Moving into my new flat, meeting up with some old friends, and then I have a date.”

Holly’s mother peeps up, “be careful, darling. Unless you’re lucky enough to marry a Holland, men tend to disappoint.”

Holly doesn’t know about Roz and Tom. That they used to see each other after the sun went down, sneaking out of each other’s windows to mess around.

Holly was a nurse who usually worked nights and Rosalind’s father was just an idiot who didn’t notice Tom taking the condoms.

“Trust me Mum. I know.” Rosalind’s eyes shift up to Tom for less than a second but it’s enough for the other boys to notice. Harry kicks his shin.

“Actually, I should probably get going now. There’s a lot of stuff I need to unpack. And Cerberus is getting sleepy. But I do hope you all enjoy desert.” She politely gets up from the table.

Nikki clicks her tongue, “Oh, darling! I was so hoping you could stay so we could discuss our plans for Christmas! And Tom just got back from filming. It’d be so lovely if you’d stay.”

“Love, if it’s just unpacking I’m sure one of the boys could help you tomorrow.” Dom says.

It’s true. All four boys would be more than willing. But it would be far too soon for Roz to be ok with it.

“No no. It’s ok. I also have to figure out some choreo for some clients.”

“Well let me help you with your stuff.” Sam offers.

“So what exactly is your new job?” He asks once they’re alone.

Rosalind clips Cerberus’s collar and leash, “I’m a new ballerina for the royal ballet company. And when there’s time, I choreograph for musicians.”

He nods and grabs an umbrella. “You might want this.”

She smiles at the nostalgia, “I can’t believe you’ve had this in your umbrella bin all this time! Thank you Sammy.”

“You know you’re still the only person who gets to call me that.” He laughs

“What? Not even your girlfriend?”

“That’s still pretty new.” He explains, “you would have met her tonight, but she had her own family thing.”

“Well I’d love to meet her.” Rosalind pulls the strap of her bag onto her shoulder before opening the door. “And thanks for setting me up on that date.” She calls out before patting her thigh for Cerberus to follow her. She waved one last time to the boy before leaving on her way.

Little did either of them know that Tom heard the entire conversation between them.

“What the hell, Sam!” He claps his brother on the back once Rosalind is out of eyesight and earshot.

Sam shrugs, “You know, for a guy who said he was never in love with her, you seem to care an awful lot. Maybe I should set you up with someone too.” With that, Sam walks back inside.

BUT like tom may be servile loser and a social climber but he's never walking away from shiv that's his ticket. lestats the opposite like he turned nicki and then set him aside like a defective doll when he went crazy (bertha mason hello!) knocked him about when he got mouthy and left him in the care of known defective baby vamp killer. toms too savvy to do that. les is too into himself to ever commit suicide like the most he'll do is take a powernap and get a younger hotter bouncier wife who'll punish him for eternity by witholding affection

I want to point something out. one I agree with you on many of these thoughts. but I want to point something out.... "bouncier wife"? YOU young man. are going to horny prison. I maintain the shivnicki connection, but its true that lestat is too stupid and violent to be tom. 🚨THOUGH I ALSO MAINTAIN THAT WITH THE RIGHT COMBINATION OF EVENTS, NICKI COULD EFFECTIVELY CAUSE LESTAT TO KILL HIMSELF.🚨 the big thing here which you are sosososo right about is that tom's anger comes from being emasculated/shiv's wife/"tom ofshiv" whereas lestats anger flourishes because no one has ever emasculated him sufficiently and also no one ever could, sorry, now who's going to horny prison, me. but I maintain an aura of tomshiv in that shivnicki (thinks he) is playing 4d chess (moving to paris with the purposeful long con of failing) while lestat (in this one single way rather like tom) is asking pour quoi you do not cook me dinner :(. on an atomic level tomshiv are Like That because of misogyny but lesnicki are Like That because queer theorists had a rare victory (two equal partners who switch) which then promptly became a defeat (lestat immediately reinvented the patriarchy). Miraculous Descendent Chapter 34: Sore Loser

Previous Chapter

The next day after school, the students of Miss Bustier's class, among others, are standing in the courtyard with their derby hats on display atop different pedestals. Everyone is on edge as they prepare for the arrival of Gabriel Agreste to judge their friends' and classmates' designs. However, the most nervous were obviously the ones who entered the contest.

Marinette is pacing near her hat while Nate, Nino, Adrien, Alix, and Sabrina watch.

"Marinette, you need to calm down. You're going to do fine." Nate tells her, trying to get her to calm down.

"He's right, dudette. All you'll do is leave a hole in the ground if you keep pacing like that. " Nino tells her.

Marinette looks toward them before remembering Tom's words.

"An important thing to remember when it comes to being judged is to remain confident."

Taking a deep breath, Marinette looks toward her friend and the people she's uncertain if they're friends.

"You're right, you're right. I need to calm down. I need to be confident. The worst he can do is say no or that he doesn't like it. It's not like he can ruin my whole career before it even starts just because he didn't like this specific design." Marinette tells herself before the words fully register with her.

When her words register with her brain, the pacing restarts at an entirely new speed.

"Wait, what if he does do that? He's the biggest name in the Paris fashion industry. He could totally do that to me. Oh no, what do I do if he does that?" Marinette begins to panic again as her breathing starts to get heavier.

Nate and Alix cringe slightly when they see her redoubled pacing while Adrien and Sabrina walk towards Marinette to try and help calm her down.

"You don't have to worry, Marinette. My father isn't that petty. If he doesn't like your design, all he'll do is give you harsh criticism meant to make you improve. He's known to be tough but fair to new designers in the fashion world." Adrien assures his sort-of friend, who is more of a friend of a friend in his fencing class.

"Adrien is right, Marinette. You shouldn't worry so much about this. As you said earlier, the worst he can do is say no or give you criticism." Sabrina agrees while putting her hands on Marinette's shoulders to try and get her to stop pacing.

Taking a deep breath, Marinette tries calming down by figuring out something else to think about. She then remembers the confrontation between Roger and Mr. Xavier and decides to talk to Sabrina about it to get her mind off things.

"By the way, I saw your dad chasing off someone feeding the pigeons yesterday while I was working on my design," Marinette tells Sabrina.

When Sabrina hears this, she lets out a small groan.

"Mr. Xavier again?" Sabrina asks Marinette in a tired and knowing tone.

"Yeah, I take it this is a regular thing?" Marinette asks Sabrina.

"Yeah, he's a bit eccentric. He keeps feeding the pigeons despite the rules saying you shouldn't and has been banned from places because of it. Whenever my dad has to stop him, he keeps arguing that he needs to feed 'his' pigeons or no one else will. Dad always comes back annoyed after having to deal with him. So, that explains why he seemed a bit more annoyed coming home yesterday." Sabrina explains.

"Your dad gets annoyed when someone feeds the pigeons when they're not supposed to?" Alix questions Sabrina, not seeing why someone would get annoyed with someone else for feeding some animals.

"Yes, because the pigeons have pooped on him a few times after they were fed. After that kept happening, he started to double down on no one being allowed to feed the pigeons." Sabrina explains.

A few in their group winch when that's explained, able to understand why the man was so annoyed with people feeding the pigeons now. Marinette even shivers slightly in disgust at the thought of any of the clothes she made getting bird poop on them.

As the group's conversation continues, Chloe glares at them in annoyance because her podium is next to Marinette's. However, she doesn't say anything as she doesn't want to risk getting disqualified before Gabriel Agreste sees her design and announces her as the winner.

"This is my best chance to make a name for myself in the fashion world early. Then she'll have to recognize us." Chloe thinks to herself as she impatiently taps her foot on the ground. There is some nervousness to her tapping as well, though.

The chatter seems to die when the people in the courtyard see a limo start to pull up at the front gate. Upon seeing the limo, everyone waits with bated breath for Gabriel Agreste to come out of the limo due to this being the first time anyone has seen him outside since he became a recluse. The anticipation is killing the ones whose designs are on trial to be judged.

However, that anticipation changes to confusion when only Nathalie gets out with a tablet under her arm. Mr. Damocles quickly walks up to Nathalie in confusion.

"I'm sorry, Ms. Sancoeur, but where is Mr. Agreste? I was told he would be showing up to judge our contest." Mr. Damocles respectfully asks Nathalie, who has a professional look on her face.

"He will be. However, Gabriel Agreste still refuses to leave his house and meet anyone unless necessary. So, he will be conducting the contest judging via a video call on my tablet when the contest begins." Nathalie quickly explains to the principal in a tone that doesn't give away a lot of emotion.

To emphasize her words, though. Nathalie pulls the tablet out from under her arm and holds it in both arms, with the screen facing Mr. Damocles.

"O-oh, I-I see. I understand he is a busy man, but I'm sure it's disappointing to my students not to have the man in person judge their hard work." Mr. Damocles tells her, and Nathalie nods her head apologetically.

"I'm sorry, but this will be how Mr. Agreste handles the contest." Nathalie apologizes.

This news seems to disappoint plenty of people who came to the event.

"Dang, dude. Your old man sure doesn't like to leave his house. I heard he doesn't even leave for events but didn't think it was true." Nino tells his friend.

Adrien sighs at Nino's words and sadly nods his head.

"Yeah, father wasn't the most social person even before mom died. Since she left, though, he's been a long more closed off." Adrien tells his friend.

Nino winches a lightly pats his friend on the back awkwardly as a sign of comfort.

After a few more minutes, the contest finally starts, with Nathalie's tablet receiving a video call request. Nathalie quickly pulls it out from under her arm and accepts it. She then holds the tablet in her arms with the screen facing forward to reveal Gabriel's stern face. Mr. Damocles quickly moves toward the tablet to meet with the man.

"Welcome, Mr. Agreste. I want to thank you for offering my students a chance to achieve their fashion dreams with this contest." Mr. Damocles quickly thanks the man on the tablet.

Gabriel looks towards Mr. Damocles with a calm expression and says.

"It's no problem. I like seeing how talented young designers are. Now, let's get the contest started. I'm a very busy man." Gabriel states before Nathalie turns towards the various podiums and looks at them.

The first derby hat he inspects is Rose and Juleka's. The design causes Gabriel to raise an eyebrow. Rose and Juleka become nervous at Gabriel's words as he stares at their hat.

"I see you went with; what is it called again? A steampunk look, I believe." Gabriel states as he stares at the hat with mild disinterest.

That's the best way to describe their hat's theme. The derby hat is a regular black one with small goggles and various cogs attached.

"Yes, we were originally planning to make cog stitches but decided it would be a nice spin to set actual cogs on the hat instead," Rose tells Gabriel in her best attempt at brightly while under the man's judgemental stare. On the other hand, Juleka seems to clam up under his gaze.

Gabriel stares at the two for a few more seconds before giving a slight nod of acceptance.

"A good attempt, I suppose. However, I recommend looking into coloring and sashes more next time. You'd be surprised at how much they can help, even if the changes are only slight." Gabriel explains to the girls before Nathalie walks away from them.

When Gabriel is facing away from them, they let out sighs of relief. Rose then grabs Juleka's hands with an excited look on her face.

"Did you hear that, Juleka? He liked our design. He liked it." Juleka excitedly shakes her friend's hands, and Juleka stares at her with a slight blush at the contact.

"Y-yeah." Juleka quietly nods.

Nathalie walks toward the podium to see Aurore standing near it while nervously spinning her parasol. When Gabriel sees her design, he raises an eyebrow.

"I see you went with a very... tropical design." Gabriel finally finds the words to describe her design.

Aurore's hat is blue with cloud stitching and an umbrella attached to the white sash wrapped around it.

Hearing his reaction, Aurore coughs into her hand awkwardly.

"I tried to turn my dream into a design." She states in slight embarrassment.

"Quite." Gabriel nods as he stares at the hat for a few more seconds.

"It is a unique design. However, I can't see anyone wanting to wear it, which is the most important part of clothing. I recommend you try and keep that in mind if you ever pursue a career in fashion." Gabriel states before Nathalie moves on to the next hat.

Aurore sags slightly when she hears that from the man but is thankful they didn't say anything too harsh to her.

The next designer is Theo, who's standing next to his podium with a calm expression and hands behind his back despite who'll be judging his design. Gabriel looks at his work with a face that betrays no emotion. After a minute, he finally speaks.

"A fine design," Gabriel tells Theo.

The derby hat has a simple white body with a black sash wrapping around it. The most notable thing about it is a paper rose on the sash.

Theo rubs his head at the praise.

"Thank you, sir. I've read that subtlety can be best sometimes when designing." Theo tells him happily.

Gabriel doesn't say anything else and nods his head. Nathalie then moves on to the next contestant, Chloe.

Gabriel looks at Chloe as if her appearance made him remember something or someone. However, he shakes it off and focuses on her design. As he does, Chloe has a confident grin as she proudly crosses her arms.

"It is quite a design. Tell me, did you take inspiration from Audrey Lee?" Gabriel Agreste asks Chloe with a raised eyebrow.

Upon hearing Gabriel say that person's last name, Chloe clenches her teeth slightly before replacing that with a confident smirk.

Her completed derby hat is a large yellow and black hat with various decorative flowers and images of bees.

"Yep, you're looking at the next Audrey... Lee." Chloe says, still seething slightly at the person's last name.

Gabriel doesn't say anything at that declaration, having heard things like that from up-and-coming designers before.

"I will give you credit. So far, I have to say it's the best design here." Gabriel calmly informs the girl. He then has Nathalie take him to the next contestant.

When she's out of Gabriel's sight, Chloe pumps her fist triumphantly while muttering.

"Ha. In your faces, losers. I'm so going to win this contest. All that's left is that spoiled brat's design. I doubt she could come up with anything impressive." Chloe mutters before looking towards Marinette's group with a victorious smirk, completely believing in her victory.

Unlike everyone else's hats, Marinette's hat is hidden in a rounded pink box. This causes Gabriel to raise an eyebrow at her, and Marinette quickly goes to take the package off in a panic while saying.

"Sorry, I thought everyone else was supposed to keep theirs in a box until you judged them." Marinette quickly apologizes.

After Marinette removes the box, Gabriel has a clear view of her hat, as does everyone else in the courtyard.

On the surface, it looks like a regular black derby hat with a golden trim near its right tip and a feather attached to the right side of it. However, upon closer inspection, Gabriel sees feather-like frills protruding from the hat with grey ends like pigeon feathers.

"Hmm, a fascinating design, Ms..."

"Marinette Cheng-Dupain, sir. I love fashion and have dreams of becoming a fashion designer in the future." Marinette quickly explains to him.

Gabriel nods and continues to look at the hat.

"It's a lovely design. It's as though the hat has its own feathers to go with the one attached." Gabriel tells her, and Marinette smiles.

"Yes, I got the idea from seeing a bunch of pigeons yesterday. I thought it could make for an interesting design." Marinette explains with a smile, and Gabriel nods.

"It's a creative design. I don't think I've seen anything like it on a hat before." Gabriel tells her.

"Thank you." Marinette bows slightly.

"Nathalie, please take me to the front of the courtyard so I can look at all the hats at once." Gabriel requests and Nathalie does as she's asked.

Gabriel looks toward all the hats with a calculating look for what feels like hours when it is only a couple of minutes. The audience watches as he tells Nathalie something, and she walks back toward the contestants. Everyone seems on edge, waiting for Gabriel to announce the winner.

Finally, Nathalie stops in front of Marinette, passing the other contestants.

"Congratulations on your demonstration, Miss Marinette. You're the winner." Gabriel informs her.

Marinette's eyes light up in happiness, and she exclaims.

"Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!" Marinette repeatedly thanked him for choosing her with a beaming smile and slight tears in her eyes.

Gabriel silently nods toward her, but someone isn't happy with Gabriel's choice.

"Are you kidding me?! You chose her over me! She probably didn't even design that hat and had someone else do it for her." Chloe exclaims in anger.

Nathalie turns toward Chloe so that Chloe can face her.

"Do you have any proof of this accusation?" Gabriel asks with a quirked eyebrow.

That question shocks Chloe slightly, and she fumbles.

"W-well, n-no, but-" Chloe starts before she gets cut off by Gabriel.

"Then I see no reason to retract my earlier statement. If you don't like it, you simply have to try harder next time. You do not get to the top of the fashion industry by complaining, goodbye." Gabriel coldly tells the girl with narrowed eyes before ending the video call.

Chloe looks at the tablet in shock at Gabriel's words before they fully register, and she gets even angrier. Giving a scathing glare toward Marinette, Chloe marches toward her until she is intercepted by Sabrina and Alix.

"Chloe, you need to calm down. You're going to attract Hawkmoth if you don't." Sabrina tells the girl while Alix glares at her.

"You lost. Get over it. Everyone loses at some point." Alix bluntly tells her.

Chloe grits her teeth at them before saying.

"No, I won't get over it! I'm not supposed to lose this. My dad and I need this more than she does! She doesn't deserve to win!" Chloe snaps at them in anger.

"Well, guess what. You didn't win. She won fair and square, end of story." Alix tells Chloe with a glare.

Chloe looks even angrier at Alix's words, but before anyone can do anything, a little purple butterfly starts to fly into the courtyard.

"Akuma!" Someone shouts in a panic before the teachers start ushering the teens into classrooms to hide.

"Chloe, you need to calm down before Hawkmoth takes control of you." Sabrina desperately tells the girl, but Chloe doesn't listen.

"Don't you dare tell me to calm down! I needed to win this contest, and I won't accept that I lost to her, of all people!" Chloe shouts at Sabrina before the butterfly lands on Chloe's design, and her vision goes dark.

i love how star trek always has a “hot playboy type” and how that type is never seen that way, but no one has it worse than tom paris. the way he was introduced made him out to be this heartbreaker who was here to have fun and die, but then he just turned into a loser who likes cars and can’t decide if he likes his wife. and at least these types were usually overshadowed in other series, like spock being more popular than kirk, data over riker, etc., but tom’s only “competitors” either had a criminal amount of screen time or was the doctor.

I think Darnell reluctantly goes because Tom and Zendaya don't wanna be alone together! 𝑬NTRY : 𝟎𝟎𝟏

February 1st, 2024.

Amaya grabbed the handle of her Hermés Kelly bag, the brown leather gripped tightly in palm, an arm full of papers tucked underneath her opposite one. Huffing lowly as she tossed the papers onto the counter, she began to sort them repeatedly until the corners all matched one another, the edges perfectly pointed, or her brain insisted she started again. Her assistant Grace knocked on the entryway to alert her boss of her presence, "Showtime, plan for Paris leaves soon."

Her focus was drawn away from the task at hand, leaving her annoyed and slightly uneasy—but that was all in her head. Something she would think about for the rest of the day, why she couldn't get the papers perfectly, why she couldn't do it right the first time. In the back of her head she would hear her trainer, "Is this horse in control or are you, Amaya? Because I'm starting to think you're just sitting up there to look pretty. Again." Clearing her throat to snap out of her own thoughts, she pulled the sunglasses down her face and sauntered towards her partner in crime, "Let's do this."

Amaya's schedule:

6:00am : hot sculpt pilates.

7:00am : walk with willow.

9:00am : meetings at the atelier, fittings, treatments.

12:00pm : music video or photoshoot.

12:00-6pm : set.

6:00pm : early dinner with willow. (bring her to set, have a personal dinner with her, do learning activities.)

8:00pm : bedtime routine.

10:00pm : catch up on emails & read.

ADDITIONS.

fly to paris to meet with beyoncé about superbowl look and cowboy carter rollout.

google meetings with: oliver rousteing, tom ford, rolling stone.

meet with mugler's team to discuss archive.

Amaya's fingers continued to tap at the open Macbook's keys while her assistant read her schedule out to her, nodding her head periodically to show some signs of life as opposed to the mindless staring she was doing. "I hear you, I can repeat everything back. Can you get Rya and Luca in here, B will be here any minute and I know she's going to want to go through every single option we have."

As they stood in the middle of the hotel room that was now turned into a full blown dressing room, Amaya knelt down in front of the Mogul, pinching at the fabric and adding safety pins in where she felt adjustments needed to be made. A weak smile overcame her features as she admired her work. I'm perfect.. It's perfect.. She thought to herself, they're gonna love me, they're gonna love this outfit.

February 10th, 2024.

As she held her daughter to her chest, the sleeping child calming her nerves. The stylist' mother stood with her head tilted to the side and hip jutted out, "When was the last time you ate, or slept through the night, or—or just did nothing. You work nearly seven days a week, all day, and you're a mom to a nine-month old. You can't do it all." Her harshly spoken whispers were rhetorical, she knew the answer, Amaya knew this song and dance, we would promise to be better; She would eat to pacify her, sleep to dream about what her next moves were, take on more projects. But, she would never stop. "I'm fine, I feel better than I ever have, don't you see, ma? I'm gonna be perfect. One day history books will call me the best stylist, the youngest one too. Willow will be proud of me, I can do it all." Soft bounces in tandem with her words as she rocked her child, cradling the full head of curls. "You always told me that second place was for losers, they'll never rate me second best again. I can't stop until I'm first."

Amaya's mother knew all too well that her tough love would one day crack the young woman, but she didn't envision that all the shattered pieces would decorate her with a hunger for more, wanting to be better at the expense of herself. Then again, she was just overcompensating for the fact she could possibly never carry her own children. How can they focus on her flaws when she's outwardly.. perfect.
