just skyped with my best friend (yes we're the only people on this planet that still use Skype) and she stumbled upon the subtitles function and turned it on for shits and giggles and coz I swear like a sailor we found out that the subtitles automatically censored swear words or the like and so for the next few minutes we just hurled insults at each other through the screen and doubled over clutching our stomachs and cried tears of laughter when another censored swearwords appeared on the screen or even better when something that should be censored DIDN'T get censored.

Warning, this post talks about racism and is also rather long
Honestly I always was aware of the fact that I was going to be treated as different from other kids my age, but I don’t think I’ve ever truly thought everything out.
My friend, she wears a hijab when she goes outside. When she’s in public spaces like shopping malls and such, strangers give her dirty looks. You know how old she was when she told me that? She was twelve fucking years old. She was twelve and desensitised to this, to the point where she said it with a smile on her face, not an ounce of hatred or anger in her voice.
My little sister, she has gorgeous, black curly hair. Other than that, she is just the same as her friends. She loves to draw, and she loves to play, and watch cartoons. But she is convinced that her stunning, curly, natural hair is not beautiful unless she goes at it with a flat iron. She hates the noise and feeling or hair straightening tools, but if she goes to a salon, and leaves without straight hair, she’s going to cry, and she still believes in the tooth fairy. She’s that young. And when I was that young, I held that very same belief, that I was ugly because of the texture of my hair.
I should be able to go to my high school, without expecting to be called a slur. This expectation simply being common sense. I shouldn’t be able to laugh along, and go “haha yeah I did 9/11! That’s so funny!” I shouldn’t have been raised knowing that I would have less opportunity, less love, less of everything than someone exactly the same as I am, except with pale skin.
I realise that in responding to things people say, that they shouldn’t say, that I am enabling that sort of behaviour. So I can stop doing that, I can make posts on the internet, but other than that, I don’t really have any power. I eventually reported the kid who called me “Osama Bin Laden” to my head of year. Nothing came of it. “Telling a trusted adult” means nothing.
(Also something is going on with the tags, so idk just ignore the repetition its not letting me delete)

the men and boys are innocent too.
we cry "the innocent women and children" to appeal to the masses, to try and force their sympathy, but the men and boys are innocent too.
I have seen sons crying out for their mothers, their fathers, their siblings. I have seen them break down at the loss of their families. I have seen them cling to their dead and grieve.
I have seen fathers cradle their dead children, seen them kiss their faces and hold their little hands. I have seen them faint with grief when asked to identify the dead. I have seen them carry their sons and daughters. I have seen them fasting to provide what little they can for their families.
I have seen men and boys digging through the rubble with just their bare hands, I have seen them comforting strangers, playing with children, rocking them, hushing them, even if the face of such imminent danger. I have seen them cry, seen them grieve, seen them break down into each other's arms, seen them be selfless, beyond selfless, becoming something I don't have a word for.
I have seen the men who are doctors refuse to leave their patients, even when they have no medicine or supplies to give them, even when they're threatened with bombings. I have seen fathers who have lost all their children pick orphans up into their arms and proclaim them their child so they are not alone. I have seen men and boys digging pets out of the rubble.
the men are innocent too. the men and boys are being hurt and killed too. the men and boys are grieving too. the men and boys are scared too. the men and boys are fighting to save their people too. the men and boys deserve to be fought for too.

for anyone too young to know this: watching The Truman Show is a vastly different experience now, compared to how it was before youtube and social media influencers became normal
before it was like, "what a horrifying thing to do to a human being! to take away their autonomy and privacy, all for the sake of profits! to create fake scenarios for them to react to, just to retain viewership! to ruin their happiness just so some corporate entity could harvest money from their very humanity! how could anyone do something so evil?"
and now it's like, "ah, yeah. this is still deeply fucked up, but it's pretty much what every influencer has been doing to their kids for a decade now. probably bad that we've normalized this experience"

A daily reminder
Those Palestinian people were not killed, they were murdered
Its not a war on Hamas, its a genocide on Palestine
Its the beautiful land Palestine, not isreal
Its Genocide, not war
Its a murdered toddler/child/baby/teen, not a dead young lady/man
Its “isreal should have not..” not “Hamas should have not…”
Its Palestines last defense, not a terrorist organization
Its hostages, not prisoners
Neutrality is still just Zionism
It was a sniper shot, not a stray bullet
Boycott Starbucks, Mcdonalds, etc
Protest
Revolt
Call your lawmakers
Keep ALL EYES on Rafah
And remember, from the river to the sea Palestine will be free
Free Palestine 🇵🇸
(remember to reblog and help get the bottom tags trending again, we must not forget palestine)

This child in gaza is screaming:
"I wish it was a dream. Oh, mom and dad. I wish it was a dream and my mom and dad are still alive" after being rescued from underneath the rubble to find his parents killed by Israel.
Share this, we are not numbers. Let our voices be heard in hopes that this stops.

Nex Benedict's death wasn't just for being transgender, it was for being native too. 2 Spirits are revered in many native cultures and it is a native-specific identity. This wasn't just a hate crime against trans & NB individuals, this was also a hate crime against Natives of Turtle Island.
You cannot separate Nex's trans identity from their native identity - this is a case of MMIWG2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2 Spirits).
Native children being killed at school is nothing new, so it's equally important to talk about Nex's native identity and being intersectional, this is a devastating tragedy for indigenous people, the queer community & especially those of us who are both indigenous and queer.
May Nex rest in peace 🪶

When you call "influencers" what they are, freelance marketers, it makes the phrase "mommy/family influencer" sound just as dark as it is in reality.
They are using their children to sell you things. Some of these people intentionally have children solely in order to use them as marketing devices.
They aren't harmless or wholesome. They are expanding and normalizing new and different forms of familial abuse to a worldwide audience

Nico referring to his mom as "Mama" implies he most likely at least used to refer to Hades as "Papa" and i 100% headcanon he still does but mostly in the manner of him having the entire Underworld wrapped around his finger for being the baby of the family
#pjo#riordanverse#nico di angelo#headcanon#my art#nico flexing youngest child privilages by pulling out the most pitiful expression he can manage#anyways i find it fun to explore character word choices#cause yknow no two characters are going to select their words the same way#or even necessarily think about it to the same degree#i like to think Nico thinks about his word choice a lot#so of course every time he uses ''papa'' he fully knows he's pulling the Baby Of The Family card#Hades definitely knows this too but falls for it every time anyways#cause Nico hasnt called him ''papa'' regularly since getting his memory wiped - just detached ''father'' or at best ''dad''#so it just reminds Hades of How Much He Just Wants His Children To Be Happy Like The Old Days#and how much poor Nico has been through and he's just the baby of the family and-#cue Nico smugly staring at the camera cause he knows how much power he holds#also i say Nico is Hades' only son cause mythologically even when Zagreus *is* Hades' son (rarely) he's. dead.#a major part of Zagreus' mythology is that he died#and im p sure every other deity said to be Hades' children are all goddesses and also are like 50% of the time not his#theres also only like 3 of them. and as far as we know in riordanverse canon one of them is implied to not be his daughter#so Nico is Hades' only son and also youngest in the family (cause Hazel is older by a month chronologically or 1 year biologically)#(and everybody else is a deity if children of hades at all)

it’s very easy to tell the good satires and pastiches from the bad ones because the bad ones are too afraid to live within the form. like if you are doing work with fairy tales and you are refusing to look closer at the underlying logic and unspoken rules of what can seem at first to be a senseless form, you are not going to create meaningful work. to borrow a turn of phrase originally used by maria tatar, if you refuse to enter “the house of fairy tale” as anything more than a gawking tourist, you will miss the particular order to the way the table is set, the rooms that are locked vs the rooms that are simply difficult to enter, the set of the floorboards and the position of the furniture. whatever you build will then be a gilded imitation of how you believe the house of fairy tale ought to look, the table set according to your educated specifications and every door open. there can be no interrogation of themes from a writer who views the form as beneath them!
