Killing Stalking and How Media Has Affected The Manhwa (SPOILERS FOR KILLING STALKING!!)

If you are going in on this without knowing what Killing Stalking is, then let me explain. Killing Stalking is a psychological horror and thriller manhwa from South Korea written by author Koogi, it ran from March 3rd, 2016 to March 22nd, 2019. The Manhwa is about two men, Yoon Bum, is described as a frail, feminine gay young man with a round or baby face, with dark circles under his eyes, implied to be eyebags, when reading the story, even if it’s simply the first chapter, you will find out that Yoon Bum is the “stalking” in Killing Stalking. Then Oh Sangwoo, is described as a handsome, charismatic, straight young man, he resembles the “killing” in Killing Stalking. The manhwa has been quite popular since it came out, but it became popular on social media, such as TikTok, in 2019-2021. Unfortunately, this manhwa wasn’t getting popular for being a well-written psychological horror but instead was being watered down to a Yaoi. If I were to go over the entire Manhwa, we’d be here all day, so if you do want to look into it, go ahead.

The two main characters of Killing Stalking have mental illness representation, which plays a key part in the series. Yoon Bum struggles with hypersexuality, Stockholm syndrome, Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and derealization. Sangwoo is a sociopath/has Anti-Social Personality Disorder (ASPD) and a narcissist.

Both Yoon Bum and Sangwoo had very traumatic lives as kids, Yoon Bum’s parents died when he was young so his grandma and uncle took care of him. His uncle would beat him with a belt, starve him and even eventually rape him. 

Sangwoo’s dad was neglectful, and meanwhile, his mother took care of him, what was seemingly an innocent and wholesome mother-son relationship, would take a dark turn for the worst. His mother killed his dad when Sangwoo was a teenager and helped her hide the body, she ended up gaslighting him into believing that Sangwoo killed his own father, not her. He and his mother got closer, she would call him “babe” which she would call her husband, Sangwoo was obviously uncomfortable with it but never directly told her, yet he did confront her, asking “You’re doing that on purpose, aren’t you?”. His mother tried to kill him just like she did to her husband. He ended up passed out, waking up tied up in a basement. This basement led to his SA by his mother when he woke up. Sangwoo ended up breaking free in which his mother would sob and say she was sorry, it is implied that she killed herself, stabbing a knife into her neck. Sangwoo’s trauma played a huge part not only in the Manhwa but also in the fandom. 

Moving onto the romanticization and glorification of the relationship between Sangwoo and Yoon Bum, and how the reasoning behind their relationship is foreshadowed. Sangwoo says in one of the last chapters that he should’ve killed Yoon Bum from the start and he regrets not doing so. The reason Sangwoo kept Yoon Bum alive is for sexual pleasure and the fact that Yoon Bum resembled Sangwoo’s mother, Eunseo. This is foreshadowed multiple times within the series, as shown below.

If you don’t believe it because of the foreshadowing, then maybe the final Q&A of Killing Stalking will give you an answer, screenshots shown below.

Honestly, I feel like someone will tell me that no one has ever shipped Yoon Bum and Sangwoo, nor has anyone liked Sangwoo or labeled the Manhwa as a Yaoi/Bl, but I do in fact have evidence:

Killing Stalking, in my opinion, is genuinely well-written for a psychological horror. I hate to see it be watered down to a Yaoi, even when the author said it wasn’t. Not to mention that Killing Stalking claims to have a live adaptation someday. To be honest, as a “fan” of Killing Stalking, I really don’t want it to have a drama made about it. It will just make the fandom rise again and I personally feel that any time a K-drama, anime, Donghua, etc. gets popular, especially among Western countries like America, it gets overly popular in a bad way. Take Squid Games, My Hero Academia, Jujutsu Kaisen, and many more shows as examples of that. Not to mention that in Korea it is extremely hard to get lgbtq+ characters on-screen let alone get r*ped, have intercourse, or touch each other in any sexual or romantic way.

I’d also like to make it clear that I am NOT upset that it’s a gay ship, I am upset that it is an abusive/toxic relationship. Popular ships in shows (specifically in Asian media) are a topic for another time, thank you if you read this far throughout my yapping. Have a good day, and do not live in delusion like Yoon Bum and Sangwoo shippers lol

Do you have any Skeptunist headcanons you'd like to share?

[kicks down the door] IT'S MY TIME TO SHINE!

So, uh, I should probably warn everyone, it's 1500 words worth of random headcanons. And that's not even all of the HCs I have, I know there are a couple I'm forgetting... So yeah, it's gonna be long. I am so sorry, dear anon, I went a little crazy-

Well, have these old doodles of them that I think forgot to share before [I genuinely can't remember if I put these on my Tumblr before], just so that this isn't just one giant block of text. These are from like February or so, but I updated them to match their new designs [I gave them mouths], yippee!

Warning: I squish and stretch these guys like playdough, especially Opportunist. And by that, I mean they are likely very, very OOC, especially as they get further from the events of the game time-wise. So if you're looking for an accurate analysis and representation of how these two would interact, you might not like this post and my headcanons.

Also for context: this is all set in my main post-canon [post-Unknown Together ending] AU, where voices and vessels start off separately, and it would take a long, long, long while for them to meet. Without voices making vessels worse, and vessels making voices worse, everyone gets to slowly address their problems. Essentially, it's "everyone gets therapy" /j

With that said, Skeptunizm:

1. I like to describe the way they start their relationship / get to know each other with the word "curiosity". Opportunist is always scheming, always playing games, always trying to gain an upper hand. His mind is one giant puzzle, and Skeptic is very much curious about it and is drawn to figure out how Oppy thinks and what's going on in that rat brain. Oppy, meanwhile, is very much a suck-up, always looking for people to cozy up to, and so Skeptic, with his intelligence and general levelheadedness, feels like a natural choice for Opportunist to try to gain the favor of. He is interested in Skeptic, curious to see if he could get his trust and get him to join his schemes. Skeptic, of course, isn't stupid and doesn't fall for Oppy's tricks, but he's doing an investigation of his own, so he plays along. And so there they go, spending a lot of time together, naturally drawn to each other and curious about each other's strengths-

Okay, I know this is less "headcanon" and more of a "hear me out" on Skeptunist, but I had to write down exactly why I got so interested in these two in the first place. This is what started this train, and now I can't get off /silly

Here are some of my actual HCs:

2. One of the first HCs I made for these two: they are both yappers and will not shut up unless you interrupt them. In Oppy's case, he likes the sound of his own voice (/j), or rather, he likes to brag and talk all about his wonderful accomplishments (they are all greatly exaggerated, and no one buys it). Skeptic, meanwhile, is bursting with weird esoteric knowledge and interests, and he will talk about it all if not stopped. And part of the reason why they get along so well is that they actually *listen* to each other's endless yap: Skeptic listens to Oppy because he likes trying to piece together which parts of his stories are exaggerated and which parts are true, and of course, he's also taking extensive notes on Oppy and his bragging tendencies (still gotta figure out the rat). As for Oppy, I think at first, he is half-listening to Skeptic out of politeness, just to get on his good side, but at some point, he genuinely gets interested in some of the topics that Skeptic talks about, especially ones he thinks could be useful for his schemes and general persuasiveness, like psychology or linguistics/pragmatics. So they both talk a lot, but they also listen to each other-

3. Skeptic likes to investigate and learn about his fellow flock's experiences with the Construct, and since he and Oppy never really met there (outside of Razor and MoC, but they haven't even talked to each other once during those), Skeptic is extra curious about what the routes he was in were like, what the Princesses looked like, how he acted during said routes, and so on, and so forth. Of course, he knows that Oppy was a notorious betrayer and backstabber, but he wants to hear about it from the man himself. Generally though, Oppy avoids the topic (until they get closer) because he doesn't really like talking about the Construct (the only exceptions are Wraith and Witch, which he talks about quite a bit as an explanation to his hurting right ankle and back, but that's more of an Oppy HC)

4. On the topic of Oppy's ankle, once they are actually in a romantic relationship, Oppy will sometimes pretend that his ankle hurts (or back, but usually ankle) just so that Skeptic can carry him places. Skeptic can very easily tell when Oppy is lying, so sometimes he goes, "You're not fooling anyone, Oppy," but sometimes, he plays along and goes, "Fine, just this once though" (it will happen again). Though, if Oppy's ankle actually genuinely hurts, and he's having trouble walking, Skeptic can usually tell that, and he will very gently carry him around even without asking. God, these birds make me so sick-

5. On the topic of the game routes, I'd like to think they would also bond over their experience with HEA (now that Skeptic is there instead of Paranoid). I feel like neither of them is particularly fond of that route (especially the "lit torch" ending), and I actually had a fic idea where Skeptic comforts Opportunist after the latter wakes up from an HEA-flashback-nightmare. Yes, I did also reference that idea in my "It was in your nature" fic. I will write that idea one day. Maybe-

6. Oppy is really good at figuring out everyone's likes/preferences without ever asking them directly, and of course, he did so for Skeptic, too. So whenever he brings Skeptic gifts, he just oh-so-happened to know that Skeptic's favorite flowers are irises, that he likes super dark chocolate, and that his favorite dessert is carrot cake. Skeptic tries to get Oppy to divulge where he learned these from, but Oppy just charmingly smiles (the answer is Smitten, and Skeptic figures that out fairly quickly, Grey brothers my beloved <3)

7. On the topic of Oppy figuring stuff out without asking, I don't remember if I ever mentioned this on my Tumblr, but I used to HC Skeptic as touch-averse aroace / demiromantic ace. If you've seen my recent Skeptunist art, you can probably tell that I've since changed my mind (and finally decided that he is a demiromantic ace), but I do still think that Skeptic is pretty particular about hugs and prefers certain gestures over others. He doesn't think it's that big of a deal, however, and wouldn't complain about that to Oppy, and if he ever mentions it, it'd be more of an "isn't it interesting" kind of statement. Oppy does his best to respect these preferences because as much as he is an annoying little rat, he doesn't want to make Skeptic uncomfortable, especially once he genuinely grows to care about him <3

8. On the topic of physical touch, I HC touch-starved Oppy (because of that one PatD line where he asks the Narrator about what Dragon's hand feels like) who desperately tries to hide that fact from everyone. Skeptic eventually figures that out (with some help from Smitten), and while Oppy is not happy about that, he does actually really appreciate physical contact: hand holding, hugs, cuddles, and more, though, of course, he will never actually admit that out loud.

9. They enjoy playing games together, specifically card games or stuff like chess. For chess specifically, a friend suggested this idea where Oppy, at first, has no idea how to play chess besides the basics, and so when they play, it's them mostly just chatting, and Skeptic barely paying attention to the game (he doesn't want Oppy to feel bad about not understanding the game)... but over time, Oppy actually learns different strategies and whatnot, and while Skeptic isn't paying attention, Oppy just puts him in checkmate. Wait, I actually have an old crappy sketch of that idea.

There you go, them! I had a few other HCs related to them playing board games with other voices (mainly that they would be scarily good at a game like Codenames together), but with the HEA update, I actually think now that they both would have trouble playing board games on a "voices game night" so they (along with Hero) don't really participate in those, at least not for a while.

10. Oppy is very embarrassed to admit that he hates and has trouble sleeping in pitch darkness. Skeptic, meanwhile, is a night owl who will stay up until 4 am reading books or writing random notes, so Oppy likes falling asleep in Skeptic's room since he always has a light/candle with a very soft/warm light. Yes, this is all set up for cuddles. No, I am not sorry /silly

11. Skeptic writes his notes almost exclusively shorthand, and none of the voices can read what the hell they say. Except for Opportunist, who learned shorthand just so that he can understand Skeptic's notes (and do just a little bit of snooping). Skeptic is fully aware of what Oppy is doing, but he doesn't mind, most of his notes are random nonsense anyway.

12. Skeptic often gets very lost in his readings/investigations/writing/whatever, and other voices often have to remind him to eat and take breaks and stuff. Of course, Oppy is one of them, and he constantly pokes fun at Skeptic for his terrible eating habits. But he also definitely brings Skeptic snacks and lunch, and also frequently takes him places just so that Skeptic actually takes a break (I certainly did not write a fic that started from that idea). In general, Oppy does a lot of small favors for Skeptic, which originally started as him trying to get on Skeptic’s good side, but as they got closer, it just became part of Oppy’s love language, if that makes sense. I imagine neither of them is good with words, so both express care in literally any way that’s not words /lh /exaggerated. 

13. They banter. A lot. It’s EG ship, and EG cannot live without banter. So of course that’s included in the ship [aggressively nods]

…Again, I am so sorry, this ended up so long, and it isn't even all of my HCs, those are just the ones I could remember off the top of my head like that. I, uh, am not okay about these birds. Please send help /lh /j

I don't usually put myself out there as it makes me nervous. But I've been a lurker for way too long, and it's about time I step out of my comfort zone. So, hello! I'm Dee (she/her), twenty-two, and have found my voice with storytelling.

Writing has always been a passion of mine, and continues to be the tool I turn to when I need an outlet to freely express myself. I have, unfortunately, hit a rough patch with consistency, and I'm here to bring all of that motivation and inspiration back. Especially since there are one too many WIPs sitting on the backburner, and they're all calling my name.

As someone who loves to dip their toes into every genre of fiction, I will read anything that peaks my interest. However, when it comes to creating, my works usually fall under romance and mystery. With practice, I intend on branching out into other genres I don't write often. There's a lot to explore in the world of writing, and I don't want to limit myself to only two categories.

Creating this blog provides me the space I need to accomplish the many goals I often dream of achieving. I acknowledge that it all starts with the ability to hold myself accountable. To show up for myself. To become comfortable with the uncomfortable. Putting myself and my projects out into the world is only the first of many steps, and it feels quite liberating.

I aim to use the voice I've found to not only contribute to the progression of POC representation, but to touch on several topics that remain heavily stigmatized in today's media. There’s a joy that runs through my veins every time I see someone like me on my screen or in a book. I feel seen, heard, and proud. I feel important. But as a creator, there’s that itch that can only be scratched when I create. When I make something that lets the next person know that they’re not invisible. That they're valued, loved, and appreciated. That's what I hope for when someone reads a project of mine. For them to feel the same rush of joy flowing through them as it does me.

Hiii it’s character comparison anon, Hyacinth reminds me a lot of Zack Addy from the show Bones (esp season 1 Zack). Especially with Hyacinth becoming a retro biologist in the future, they both have jobs that related to death on top of having similar personalities/demeanors. 

And since I’m talking about Hyacinth anyway, do you mind if people headcanon your characters as intersex? Hyacinth being amab nonbinary is 100% awesome and amab nonbinary absolutely need more representation but Hyacinth is my favorite of your OCs (of the TOH ones anyway, all the other TOH fankids + OCs are lovely too but Hyacinth speaks to me) and it would mean a lot of you were cool with intersex headcanons, and intersex people can have agabs so it wouldn’t cancel out or contradict that crucial amab nonbinary rep. Totally understandable if not though, they’re your character and what’s okay and not okay is 100% up to you.

Have you ever thought about reporter!marc having his own podcast?? Like years after his falling out with Valentino he starts one with Alex, and it actually breaks out of the niche of motogp simply because it’s so well done. It becomes a staple in riders yearly marketing duties, with Marc asking insightful questions, maybe getting some acclaim outside the pieces he would write on Valentino. Like ppl who don’t even watch races will tune in to listen because it hits that sweet spot of expert explaining what they love with passion. The end game of all of this is of course the divorce episode, where by some power of god Valentino does an interview on the podcast. And, as has happened in real life, he is much more open and vulnerable on the podcast even though it’s marcs (especially because it’s marcs??)… it either starts them toward reconciliation or next level fame trauma or both :)

the thing about this au is that SHOULD initially be more resentful of each other— marc is a reporter prying at vale’s careful facade and vale is a representation of everything that marc wanted but never got. they each catch on the other’s most tender of issues and it SHOULDDDDD prevent them from falling in love crazystyle but unfortunately for them it does not. truly they are friendly they are yappers they are personable and marc has that same razor sharp but occasionally goofy gleam in his eye that vale does and an insane little face to boot. reallyyruly deeply they just have an instant and natural affinity for each other… UNFORTUNATELY for them, this also means that when the breakup happens it is just a bad if not WORSE than irl. just like it happens here, apply some pressure career-wise, and all of the reasons they SHOULD hate each other start to look a lot more viable… they do NOT forgive people fucking with their ability to succeed…

so. anyways your beautiful little scenario. it’s a few years post sepang and they have an overly professional but CLEARLY cold detente. still make each other hyena laugh occasionally in that deranged way that they do but after that it’s like. ignoring each other in presscons while marc asks increasingly insane questions about vale’s age with every new article…. marc (along with every other journo) has a podcast (i think he videos it so he has an excuse to throw on one of his slut turtlenecks) and its pretty successful because marc has this inherent ability to understand/create narrative in sport (usually he uses this power on himself but i for one would LOVE to see his hot takes on the others lol) which i DO think is literally the mark of a good sports journalist. they are paid to do rpf, in a way. BUT the most notable thing is the WAYYYYYY he talks about vale… incisive. oddly almost worshipful. frank. strange note of tension coloring his voice. funny. occasionally mean. sometimes he starts a story off about the two of them from when he was just starting his career with abject delight in every line of his posture before cutting himself off and changing the subject… and the thing is i DONT think he gets vale on the pod until post reconciliation and then he drops like. a two hour intimate interview of them cackling like LUNATICS out of genuinely fucking NOWHERE and every single listener in the world is like i thought they HATED EACH OTHER ?? an absolute BOMB in the motogp journo podcasting world

I loveeeee questions like this omg it’s not a dumb question at all it means so much to me that u have a question about a little detail like this!!!!! there are like details I put in there bc I was like. hmm I need details to make this feel authentic. but this one specifically was put there because I wanted like. upon first read it just seems like he’s a dick. like he could get reader something they really want decently easily, and it would be a kind thing to do as a friend. but then on a reread (which like I’m not sure I hit the mark here lmao) I wanted it to show that like. he’s had these feelings for them obviously for a WHILE like a long time and he’s a massive overthinker. and so he’s faced with the choice to do something really nice for them (even though he can use his influence to get these sneakers, they’re still like extremely rare and valuable) and he has to ask: is that TOO nice? will they be suspicious of me if I do something really nice and then will they look into the way I act around them and figure out that I have feelings for them? so he doesn’t, because it’s easier to just be a dick than throw everything into disarray.

bc like. god sorry I am a YAPPER but like I think even as the whole time before the fic starts reader doesn’t want to mess up the friend group dynamic by admitting their feelings to kirishima, bakugou also is TERRIFIED of messing up the friend group dynamic too. he is under the impression that you really do NOT like him (bc to be fair, at the start you really don’t), so like if you found out he had feelings for you it would mess everything up beyond repair. and he has that moment like years earlier where he kind of tries to gauge how you feel about him with the get well soon card, and that doesn’t go well at all (another moment where like… I do think I’m a stronger writer now than I was four years ago and I think I could have made my intentions for those details/scenes a little less confusing if I knew how to shape the space between the lines better), so he’s like. they Do Not like me. and under no circumstances can I allow them to find out that I do. and then obviously in a moment of weakness… etc, etc, etc.

Do you believe in soul mates? Yeah. I think that it’s rare to find them but I think that in a way there’s someone out there for everyone. I also believe that they take many forms and don’t exclusively come as lovers. I think that they can come in the form of friendships and family members too.

What is your morning routine? I wake up, cook and eat my breakfast, check my email and other notifications that might be important, fix my bed, get dressed or take a shower (Depends on if I took shower the night before. I recently got a class that ends at 10pm and by the time I get home I’m too tired to really do anything and I have a whole routine for showering along with me hating going to bed with wet/damp hair.), and then open up my bedroom curtains. After that I actually start my day and do whatever I need to like attend classes, school work, chores, errands, etc etc.

Which fictional character (book, show, or movie) do you relate to most?

Steven Grant - Specifically his show version. I just love him in general and relate to him in other ways but my main thing is that he’s implied/confirmed to be on the autism spectrum, and he’s actually good representation among the sea of absolutely shitty ones. I see a lot of autistic traits that I have in him and it makes me actually feel seen. I also see other things in his personality that I also have in mine like being over all polite to others but will get sassy occasionally and other things. All in all, I really like Steven.

Sock from Welcome to Hell - I don’t know if my Moon Knight demographic has seen this animation but it’s been a part of my life and soul since I was in middle school. Anyways, Sock is what I call “a nonbinary/gender nonspecific icon and annoying friend representation”. This character had the entire fandom debating on if they were a male or a female for YEARS because they have an androgynous appearance and voice along with wearing clothes that didn’t particularly specify which either. And that helped me realize that I was nonbinary/gender nonspecific and could wear whatever I wanted. Also, if you’ve seen the animation, Sock is kind of annoying, but not in the negative way, in the “friend that doesn’t know how to shut the fuck up” way. They’re a certified yapper and so am I.

If there was ever a more perfect representation of "girlfriend who yaps and boyfriend who listens", it would be you and Toge. Admittedly, Toge's inability to speak is what inclines him to listen more, but he's more than happy to play the role for you.

With both of you being introverts, the two of you initially hit it off by talking over text; it gives Toge more of an even playing field for conversation too. You find out that Toge is in fact hilarious, his responses dry and quippy (he knows too many memes for his own good). When he realises that you like playing Fortnite, he immediately asks you to join a game with him. Your first date is spent playing round after round of the game, rising the ranks and finally coming out on top. He also finds it endearing that you post songs to your Instagram stories. When first starting to flirt with you, he would make sure to reply to them, telling you his thoughts on the song after he finishes listening to it.

Since he's not able to communicate much verbally when you're in person, he often defers to songs to convey his feelings, a way of sharing in your love for music. He's surprised when you suggest a new way of communicating between the two of you—by humming certain notes and patterns, he should be able to convey more in comparison to his rice ball ingredient vocabulary. He's touched that you went out of your way to think this up, your act of service dear to his heart.

Dates with Toge are pretty much what you expect out of a typical high school romance, but his favourite type is when he can listen to you sing and play your instruments, while chilling in the background. It's one of the few times he can truly join with his voice, humming along with you as a duet.

The Matchmaker's Gift

If you're up for it, I'd be interested to hear your perspective on the Angel Dust from early concept art compared to the Angel Dust we have now.

Very early on, Angel was going to be genderfluid, but now he's a cis man.

Angel and Vaggie were originally a couple when they were being developed for Zoophobia, but now Angel is gay.

Angel nearly had a daughter as well! Her character would later morph into Cherri Bomb.

I bring this up because I've recently seen discussions about Angel's identities, including one person arguing that Angel should be bi rather than gay because "as it stands he falls into way too many stereotypes of monosexual gay men."

I personally would argue that Angel bucks a few stereotypes by being a femme gay man who's also very capable of using guns to defend himself.

On the other hand, I do understand the desire for more genderfluid rep. There's not a lot of it out there at the moment, so I can see how there might have been disappointment that Angel wouldn't be genderfluid after all.

I also think Angel's abuse story is powerful in part because he's a gay man, since we don't got a lot of male abuse victims in fiction, let alone gay male abuse victims, who aren't just treated as jokes. Again, though, having a genderfluid person go through such a plotline would also be pretty groundbreaking.

What do you think? Do you think Angel being genderfluid and bi/pan and a parent would have enhanced his character? Or are you happy with him the way he is?

So, first off, I think the idea of angel having a daughter would be interesting! I can see why they might have scrapped it, but I think it has the potential to be fun. I definitely prefer Cherri Bomb as the wild, bad-influence friend, though, and I hope we see more of her and Angel being besties in s2 (as well as her actually looking out for Angel's best interests!).

In terms of queer representation, I personally don't have any qualms with Angel Dust. Yes, he displays features that are stereotypical among gay men - in all honesty, I don't see this as a negative thing. As you said, he similtaneously defies stereotypes by being a tough-guy mafioso, something exclusively associated with masculinity. A character displaying traits that are a stereotype of their group is not inherently offensive. It's when the stereotypes are used as the butt of jokes, to be laughed at and not with, and when there is no depth to characters beyond the use of stereotypes (aka they are used to perpetuate ignorance). When there is sufficient knowledge, understanding and respect towards the group in question at the heart of that character's portrayal, that's the most important thing. You can feel with Angel that he is a character that was loved into existence.

Stereotypes can be harmful, but many evolve out of reality. Stereotyping all gay men as feminine and flamboyant is blatantly untrue, but many are! And those who are might relate to Angel Dust's character! I'm not a gay man, but I am an effeminate queer person and a drag queen, and I find a lot of Angel's characterisation relatable! He also reminds me of my friends in the drag and club scene - it makes me think of them with love.

That's not to say it's perfect. I don't really understand what "perfect" representation of a group would be, because it's absolutely impossible to create a character that represents every single facet of one group. It defies the point of representing minorities, which is so important within the media BECAUSE it is an opportunity to demonstrate diversity within marginalised groups. It is for this exact reason that not every single person will wholly relate to characters that they share an identity with. Trying to create a character that represents every aspect of a community would be utterly redundant.

That being said, that's why representation matters, and that's why we need more characters with the same identities and different traits. Within Hellaverse, unless I am mistaken, the only characters that are canonically gay men are also effeminate and flamboyant, which I would like to see change in later seasons. There's always room for improvement. However, as far as queer representation goes in general, I think Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss have a lot to be proud of.

Aaaaaand I'm gonna cry cuz I typed a whole paragraph and accidentally deleted it. FML.

OKAY gonna try and speedrun this from memory. It would have been cool if Angel was genderfluid! I'm non-binary myself, and would love to see Hellaverse have more trans representation. However, I still think Angel Dust's character and experiences resonate with a lot of queer people, and him being cis doesn't negate this. Seeing a male sex worker in a queer abusive relationship is not something I've seen a lot of in the media, and I know his story resonates deeply with queer people, sex workers and survivors of abuse. I think Hazbin deserve a lot of merit for portraying his situation so accurately and with such care.

I think people often don't see the woods for the trees. Often, it's a good thing! We SHOULD be pushing for more representation. It is absolutely imperative that we see more trans character in the media, we should see more under-represented queer identities such as bisexual men. But that doesn't make the representation we have somehow irrelevant or inherently flawed. Hazbin IS flawed. All media has flaws! But I personally don't find these particular criticisms to hold water, and I will always critique through the lense of "does it hurt more than it heals?".
