obligatory dukes childhood bedroom appreciation post, this bad boy can fit so many hyperfixatation headcanons
Tumblr media
ignore Bruce on the iv this ain't abt him..anyway childhood duke hcs for your viewing pleasure
-classic fave of mine is that dukes career as a forever dm started when he ran a campaign for a bunch of older kids when he was like 10 at the library
-and dukes favorite place was DEFINITELY the library when he was a kid. it was like baby's first mutual aid. he always returned his books on time. If there was an event, he was there, elaine and doug made sure of it. he feels like a know it all kid, the type who got in trouble for reading books about wizards under the desk instead of paying attention
- older hc but I think her wrote warrior cats fanfic basically but w dragons instead I just know he did in my heart
-in we are robin duke mentions an old childhood dream of wanting to be a paleontologist (mainly cuz he liked solving things and putting pieces together) but I dully belive the pipeline went wizards > dragons > dinosaurs (baby duke basically thought dinosaurs were like irl dragons

adventure time ttrpg
made in conversation with martin dubuque, @polychromaic, and @whinnylikeahorse
HOW TO PLAY
STEP ONE: CHARACTER CREATION to make a character, come up with a one-sentence description of a weird freak. your description must be at least one of the following: -FUNNY -WEIRD -CONTRADICTORY SLASH CONFUSING -SILLY come up with this description privately, then everyone share all at once. feel free to change your description afterwards if you'd like, but the goal here is to make a bunch of weirdos who don't make any sense together
STEP TWO: MAKE THEM MAKE SENSE TOGETHER figure out something your characters are trying to do. ideally this is a mix of short- and long-term goals (ie, we want to do X right now because we try to do Y in general). once you have an idea of what your game is gonna be about, figure out what your own approach to getting that will be, and how that approach is gonna run into problems. talk through those problems, see if someone else has a fun solution to them, and then see what consequences emerge from that solution. youre playin the game baybee
STEP THREE: BE AUTHORITIES ON THE ODDITIES OF YOUR WORLD the world around you is weird. it's weird in part because you're in it, and because it bends over backwards to facilitate the weird shenanigans you get up to. but it's also weird in a bunch of other ways, too. everyone has the authority to introduce new problems, obstacles, wrinkles, and oddities into the world as you go on your adventures, and those oddities stick around and interact with one another long after you're gone. whenever two people's ideas are in conflict, argue about which one is true in-character until you come to a fun conclusion you're both happy with.
STEP FOUR: GET SILLY WITH IT make bold, goofy choices, and then play around with the consequences. commit hard to stupid bits. bring back old jokes the moment you think your friends have forgotten about them. whenever something's not happening, pick a direction (literally or metaphorically) and run in that direction as fast as your little legs will take you. there's no such thing as a bad idea, because even a bad idea becomes entertaining when you follow through with it. hype up each other's ideas, build on them constantly, commit to the bit, and have fun.

Was thinking about wishes in different stories and their limits and rules, so I made a chart.
I'm not familiar with everything here, a few were referenced through TvTropes.
I'm curious what peoples' thoughts on this would be.

The “Adventure Time is a dnd game” is one of my favorite cartoon theories so heres some of my headcanons about it:
Finn, Jake, and Marceline are the only consistent players, PB is a dmpc, and bmo is also an npc but when Finn and Jake’s players’ little sibling wants to play they pull out his character sheet. Marceline is dating the DM which is why she was the only one to read the entire lore document and use it in her character.
Flame Princess and Huntress Wizard are also PCs played by the same person, who is also Finn’s players’ irl gf. She tried getting into it after her boyfriend convinced her that it would be fun, but didn’t really like it. But they already committed to a plot with FP and Finn being together so they made an agreement that Finn would take a moral nosedive to resolve it. Around a year she decided to try again with a new character that she liked playing much much more.
The game wrapped up when The DM and Marceline’s player had to go off to college. All the players got together for one last session fighting against an ancient evil being named GOLB that the dm pulled from her ass at the last second.
Distant Lands were continuations of the story set in the same universe. BMO was Finn’s player setting up a game for his little sister and one of his friends, Obsidian was a surprise oneshot by Finn and Jake’s players as a gift for Marceline and the DM (who played PB as a pc for this) when they came back from college for the summer. Wizard City was the DM setting up a game for her college friends. And Together Again was a game the DM tried to set up online for Finn and Jake’s players years later. Marceline’s player played the villain for this one.
Because Together Again actually worked out well, the DM decided that maybe they should pick up the game again online, even just for a few sessions, but wasn’t sure what to base it off of. Then one of the players brought up that time they drew their characters genderswapped and the Fionna and Cake campaign. Marceline’s player co-dmed. Huntress Wizard’s player decided to come back but she didn’t want to play the character she made and wanted to focus more on rping and less on combat, because thats what she really liked about the game. So the DM slid Simon’s character sheet across the table and she said “understood.” And she prepared to do the most heartwrenching roleplaying any player had ever seen.
Marceline’s player would also go on during college to start her own campaign with her friends about alien rock women and their little human brother.
Finn’s player starts a much shorter and less well remembered campaign about a team of space faring warriors with a half bug half cat as a pet.
Jake’s player starts a campaign set in the far far future where his favorite recurring npc is a morally challenged robot. (He also played a game before adventure time with the same DM with a pirate theme where he played an angry sea captain with an obsession with candy)
And BMO’s player many many years later would start a campaign about a magical robot girl and her pet alien cat dog thing.

Thinking about the beach year tonight. So much of stolen century is beautiful and intense and the stated point of the beach year is to get a break but. It’s still in the middle of the century you know? The players and the characters and the audience are ALL still feeling the weight of everything around it the whole time, and because of that it becomes so much more than a fun break. Like there’s goofiness and joy for sure but it’s still so steeped in the intensity and sadness and we end up with this stunningly realistic experience of the moment of calm in the midst of a terrible storm. At the end of it there’s going to be another year, right? And they know that and we know that.

Some Adventure Time characters in D&D, 'cause why not:
Finn: I think he would start out as a Champion fighter, but then eventually switch to a College of Valor bard---fitting his more musical side while also keeping in line with his desire to be a hero and not making it all about violence---and maybe take a few levels of a Monster Slayer ranger for good measure. That last one is mostly due to the growth he goes through in Hall of Egress and him learning from Huntress Wizard, but I think it works. Also, he's still obviously a human.
Jake: Astral Self monk, Swashbuckler rogue. His whole deal as a stretchy, half-alien dog is very difficult to translate into D&D terms, but I think it'd make sense for him to be a changeling and a werewolf, keeping the whole canine aspect while also adding in the shapeshifting and the, uh... well, the whole "we have a kid who is definitely from somewhere else but we're keeping him anyway" thing.
Bonnie: I think her whole deal speaks to her being a textbook Alchemist artificer, and her princess nature, long lifespan, and a somewhat loose grasp on the concept of morality absolutely reminds me of high elves (no shade meant to PB, I love her and her emotional growth). However, just making her a high elf isn't enough---the fact that she was literally born from a mutagenic gum formed in the wreckage of a ruined world can easily translate to her also being a Reborn. Fitting, for a mad scientist.
Marceline: She's quite clearly a bard, and I think College of Spirits suits her the best---she's got a lot of connections to ghosts and undead things in AT canon, after all, and seeing as she survived an apocalypse, I think it's fitting that her college of choice would be one that's all about singing the songs of the departed. And, well... tiefling vampires are probably a thing in D&D, so. Yep.
BMO: He's an Inquisitor rogue and a lil' autognome. 'Nuff said.
Flame Princess: Circle of Wildfire druid, for reasons that are kind of obvious. And a Fire genasi. For reasons that are... also obvious.
Huntress Wizard: Um... a Hunter ranger. Probably an Eladrin due to the forest-like appearance, though I have no idea what her season is.
The Ice King/The Ice Thing/Simon: So, the Ice King, to me, is an eeeeeeeexcellent portrayal of a Great Old One warlock---specifically, a Pact of the Talisman warlock---gone horribly wrong. While the crown might not seem very classic GOO at first, the fact that using it literally gambles away your sanity is pretty in-line with the risks of that patron.
Gunther, pre-fusing with the crown, is really just a Great Old One on his own, albeit one that's been stuffed into a safe and squishy container. After fusing with the crown, and likely losing his memories of his time as Orgalorg for good, I think he probably became a Storm Sorcerer, as what powered his ice magic was now (almost) irremovable.
And Simon... honestly, between his nerdiness and his low constitution, he's just your classic wizard, really. Probably Chronomancy, due to his penchant for bouncing through time and multiverses.
Betty/Magic Betty/Golbetty: Order of Scribes wizard, who eventually became a Wild Magic sorcerer, who eventually became the Greatest Great Old One that there ever is. And yes, that makes Magic Man a Wild Magic sorcerer, because of course he is.

Hate, lesser god of Nehwon, "manifests itself as a thick grey fog with a few red orbs resembling eyes in the density. This fog is able to control up to 6 beings (as in a mass charm spell) or manipulate up to 6 weapons in its tentacles as a set of 6th level fighters. The manifestation of the god must be generated at night by a high priest of at least the 10th level and 100 worshipers. The fog will appear from the worshipers and is able to travel a distance of 5 miles. Its only function is to do harm." (Jennell Jaquays and Jeff Dee, AD&D Deities & Demigods by Jim Ward and Rob Kuntz, TSR, 1980)
