Okay, so, while I was thinking about love and love

and the big black hole that can't be filled with food or drink or even with sex (the black hole = being unworthy of LOVE).

I started thinking about the Cupid in My Bloody Valentine and specifically how Dean relates to love, and love.

It's a normal psychological thing, especially when we're very young people, that when we start to fantasize about "love," for it to look like familiar things in our lives, or even movies that we've seen.

Like most people, Dean's fantasy "Love" comes as a montage of all familiar things in his life: for the djinn, it's the specter of Carmen, a cookie-cutter recipe of a dream-woman he saw in a magazine. The male siren is a reflection of ALL of his familiar, more stable relationships: Dean himself, Bobby's quips, John's love language in the form of Led Zeppelin, Sam's non-threatening safety and stability.

It's normal for a young person to imagine an immature love as a constellation of all these things, especially for Dean at this moment, coming off the heels of intense, long-lasting sexual assault where he may not want intimacy per se (s3-4, in See Alistair and his time in Hell; also I can’t help but think of s7’s self-pep-talk with regards to Dean's bluster versus his actual behavior: "Come on, Dean. This is what you do.")

And the funny thing is that real love sometimes pulverizes all our former expectations and fantastical illusions. Dean won't be falling for someone exactly like himself in terms of personality, or someone who mimes all the lyrics of Led Zeppelin, or someone who looks like a white picket fence ideal from a magazine, or someone "safe" where Dean gets to control the relationship terms so that it can never let him down.

But we do see Dean cling to the Led Zeppelin story as a symbol of "Love,” especially with regard to Mary and John, because it's something he believes in. Throughout his life, Dean'll use Led Zeppelin to say things he can't easily shape with words.

So, what's my point?

My Bloody Valentine is an episode specifically about Dean craving love.

And love is not something you can go out and get.

Love is a nebulous thing, not as simple as food or drink or sex. And it's a horrendous emptiness to not only lack love, but to feel you're unworthy of it. (Of course, the black hole is ALSO grief.)

That's the deep, dark nothing, isn't it? It is afraid of being seen and rejected.

And THAT'S why the Cupid enters the scene to cast doubt. The Cupid storyline exists to make Dean doubt that REAL love even exists. This makes the emptiness seem even more hopeless, because if LOVE isn't even real, how can the longing inside of him ever be filled?

The Cupid says Mary and John were the "perfect" couple, which was a lie, even based on what we've seen. (Personally, I think it's a metaphor for the "limerance" phase of all relationships.) No couple is perfect, and John and Mary certainly weren't. No love is perfect, and it's riddled with mistakes.

As Dean grows wiser, he chafes against these concepts of perfection and emptiness. It's as he tells Jack in Optimism 14x06 in DIRECT contrast to Harper's "It'll be perfect":

DEAN - Eh, Actually love can get crazier than that. And it might get crazier with Harper still out there. But, uh, you did good, kid....okay, alright. It's not about being right. Kay? You're gonna make mistakes, hell, I make them all the time. But it's how you handle yourself once you've made those mistakes and you've learned from them.

That's a cheat code for Dean's older, wiser feelings about mature, lasting love, and it's a direct mate to both Harper's "no-baggage, never-let-me-down perfectionism"... and AU Michael's nihilism, which will occur just 4 episodes after this in 14x10:

MICHAEL!DEAN: (Castiel) "gripped you tight and raised you from Perdition." Or whatever. But since then, what has he done? Only made mistakes, one after the other.

Love isn’t about always-and-never statements. Those are the warning signs of figments. Love isn’t about being right, or never making mistakes, or never having baggage, or never letting another person down. It’s about resilience. About picking yourself up and trying again.

Paraphrasing Metatron and Gabriel, about humans:

“They don’t give up, but you do!”

Indeed, Chuck appeals to Amara to “give up” with the concept of starting fresh, of “no baggage.”

Chuck destroys his works in a fit of lethal perfectionism.

so because i've been replaying origins on the xbox (easy baby supervision from there) and i've been playing my amell, genevieve, I think I'm going to go with her for the canon warden (sorry gwen and revassan...) so it's genevieve / allison / daewen

15. preferred weapon of choice?

genevieve is a mage, so you'd expect her to list a particularly cool staff, but she's also an arcane warrior and, accordingly, her preferred weapon is a sword: spellweaver. she keeps a smaller staff (a wand???) on her to switch to for more complex spells (and the blood magic...), but she's gotten comfortable now with the sword in her hands.

allison prefers big ass greatswords (or axes), but she's also comfortable using a sword and shield if it's what's available (this is me justifying her sword/board loadout in inquisition).

daewen is adept with her staff but actually prefers just using her hands to cast spells (and with her magic, she's primarily a fire and electricity mage, eventually learning rift magic). ironically, losing her arm in trespasser meant that this became required (and she started to miss the staff), and she had an arm made that worked as a kind of staff prosthetic.

16. do they get sentimental about their weapons or armour?

genevieve is attached to spellweaver mainly because it's baby's first sword. she's since gotten better weapons, but she's kept spellweaver regardless. she's particularly attached to jewellery that she was gifted or obtained prior to or during the blight, like her ring of study from the circle, her joining amulet, and lifedrinker (her blood mage-restricted amulet). they remind her of how far she's come.

allison thinks sentimentality about weapons and armour is useless. there's also not a lot that she wants to be reminded about, anyway. she has kept the little trinkets that isabela has randomly given her over the years, though. she's got all kinds of little sapphire rings that are "the colour of your pretty eyes", for instance.

daewen lost the staff her keeper had made for her at the temple of sacred ashes, but her clan has another one made after corypheus is defeated and she still has that. she also kept the armour she wore throughout inquisition, mainly to remind herself of her own influence after it starts to wane. she would never let anyone know that, however.

18. do they have any irrational fears?

genevieve hates spiders! absolutely loathes them! why are there so many giant ones around???? with their horrible many legs and way too many eyes. even after she becomes a tanky arcane warrior, she hides behind alistair when spiders appear.

it's perhaps not an irrational fear, but allison became a little bit claustrophobic after being trapped/lost in the deep roads. she can hide it well enough, but being underground freaks her out.

daewen has come to really fear her own irrelevance, which is very strange considering how much she initially sought to get away from the prominent herald role. but ever since meeting ameridan and discovering how his story was forgotten and rewritten, she fears that all of her accomplishments - for elves, for mages, for anyone who's not an andrastian or noble - will be lost and that she herself will be lost to the whitewashing tide of history. after how hard she fought? how much she grew and made others grow? she fears it.

The Miys, Ch. 212

Whew. Last week was insane.... I’ll create a separate post for that, probably tomorrow. Too many people to thank this week!

@baelpenrose, obviously, not just for beta reading, but for helping me through the overwhelming amounts of stress I’ve been dealing with recently - up to and including being willing to submit my own chapter to my blog so I can try to post it from mobile while I was driving for 13 hours last Tuesday.

Guess what? You can’t post submissions from mobile. -_-  But that mfer certainly tried.

Alistair started drafting the brief to the Ark population while everyone else started debating on who would be our primary voice when speaking with Odvub.  I had immediately bowed out when it was decided we would ask them to petition on our behalf - not only for the sake of Conor’s ongoing sanity, but also because I was admittedly enamoured with Odvub’s overwhelming presence.  Names were thrown out and argued over for nearly half an hour before I cleared my throat.

“My vote is for Grey.” I was proud of how firm and unmoving my tone was.

Xiomara was more curious than skeptical when she responded. “Why Grey, specifically?”

Completely ignoring the fact that most people in the meeting couldn’t see me, I started counting off on my fingers. “When Odvub was shown to the Council for the first time, Grey was curious.  Everyone else was awestruck, afraid, anxious, or some combination of the three. Grey wasn’t. They showed the exact same amount of curiosity that they show toward a new plant hybrid or an interesting problem.”

“Both of which we trust their judgment on, without question,” Huynh agreed with me. “It makes sense. I second the idea.”

“I am concerned about their legal knowledge,” Xio sighed. “I’m not advocating for myself, believe me. But Eino might be a better choice.”

Pranav scoffed. “No offense intended, Eino, but you are rather known for your passive neutrality. We need someone who will argue if we are initially told no.”

“No offense taken,” Eino’s voice assured. “I selected my preferred successor for that exact reason. Listening and patience are all well and good with a decade to make decisions, but urgency is not my strong suit.”

“Are you suggesting Professor Farro negotiate?” Grey asked, confused.

Several voices - including Arthur’s - barked in disagreement. “Not happening,” Arthur stated flatly. “We want to make a good impression, and despite what you all think, I’m more likely to piss off the Galactic AI by making a Lysol joke.”

Laughter broke the tension briefly before I picked up the reins again. “So, Eino declines, two votes for Grey so far.  I suggest we make this a unanimous decision - we’re talking about the literal future of our species here.  None of us wants to be the one who said nay, no matter which way this goes.”

Murmurs agreed with me. “What about Administrator Costa?” Pranav suggested. “Miss Harper and Professor Farro handled negotiations with the S’crirs, so there is precedent on having one of our mentees take the reins here.”

Almost as though it was rehearsed, Antoine bowed out. “I am disinclined to argue.”

Tyche snorted before mouthing at me. “Liar.”

After a few more minutes of suggestions and people bowing out, Grey called the vote themselves. “I think we have narrowed our pool of candidates adequately, and I am amenable to the appointment if that is what the Council determines. Are there any direct objections?”

Very succinct, I thought approvingly. Quit waiting for agreement and straight out ask for the nays.

After a very precise forty-five second pause, Xiomara spoke. “No objections spoken. Grey, you’re our voice and may gods above and below be with you.”

“Should they exist, they have much more to answer for than my success or failure in this endeavor,” Grey replied wryly. “We should adjourn while Pranav sets up the connection.  Xiomara, if you could send me the legal precedents that you have on hand regarding our rights and the case law that Her Majesty sent over, it would be appreciated.”

I left the audio open during the recess, but muted the end in my office so that we could speak freely. “How do we feel about that?” I asked, glancing around.

Hannah tilted her head side to side. “I think Grey is a good choice, but I’m surprised that Evania wasn’t suggested as well.”

Parvati almost stifled a grin successfully, but Tyche had no such compunctions. “Evan has phenomenal judgement of safety and an exhaustive comprehension of rules and laws.  She is also incredibly bound by the chain of command, so the risk that she would see Odvub as in a position of authority is too high.”

I nodded, along with Parvati. Alistair added “She does return books in a very timely manner, which I believe speaks highly of her respect for others - however, I also think it affirms her adherence to regulation.”

Quietly, I moved to assist Alistair in the short-term release to the Ark. After some careful debate, we reworded a few things to make sure the population was informed but not in a state of panic and added a disclaimer to reach out to your mental health partner or partners during this time.

We were very careful to not even remotely word that as a suggestion.

By the time the release was approved and being sent, Pranav alerted us that the connection with Odvub was on standby. “I would like to advise that the connection cannot be limited to audio only, as a significant portion of their language is via gesture.  My team will, however, be running translation to audio only as close to parallel as we can get it for those who believe they will be overwhelmed.”

Voice still muted from my office, I gave everyone a stern look. “If you wish to view the full communication, please feel free to do so from your personal datapad. I will have the local connection set to translation audio only.”

Tyche and Alistair nodded but didn’t move. Hannah and Parvati, however, transitioned closer to my desk so they would not be in our line of sight - understandable, seeing as they had not seen Odvub the first time.  It did not go amiss that Tyche flicked open her own datapad before glancing at them both, a pretty obvious sign that she was monitoring vitals.

“Ready,” Grey confirmed after everyone else had given their status. Antoine had moved to another location for audio only and medical monitoring on his mentor.

Even through the translation channel, the chiming symphony could be heard.  It made me glad that I had outright refused to handle this interaction, along with validating my decision to record the translation for later review.

“Greetings, Terran Council.” Thankfully, the translation software had given Odvub a neutral alto with flat affectation. “How may we assist you?”

My databand vibrated, and I twitched it open to find a message from Arthur. “They were not kidding about the hive minds, huh?”

Grey responded, sparing me from my need to respond to the clearly rhetorical question. “Greetings, Odvub. We have been advised that the Eko-mari fleet has petitioned to provide quarantine for our new colony world, and have reason to believe the request will be granted. However, we also believe it will be detrimental to our species in both short and long term.  As such, we request that you file petition on our behalf with the Galactic Council.”

Another message from Arthur. “Not a punch pulled. I approve.”

“This is a legitimate concern,” Odvub immediately replied, the artificial voice taking on a choral quality as it split momentarily. “Please advise your logic, so that we can make a sound decision.”

That was interesting… Odvub literally was the Galactic Database. In theory, they already had all this information.

Grey, however, was nonplussed. “We have already experienced the Eko-mari view of non-hive species: they view us as primitive, and more so for those species who have biological or psychological gender.  They grudgingly admit our sentience, but on a scale of ‘just barely’.  Additionally, while the information quarantine is a standard part of species relocation, we have a substantial amount of evidence of overreach on their part.”

We did?

Odvub hesitated when Grey stopped speaking. “Please elaborate on your evidence of overreach.”

“Ordinarily, I would provide files,” Grey admitted. “And if you would like, I still can after I explain. Regardless, not only myself, but my peer Pranav Raganathan and Miys has experienced multiple instances in which data that we earned through rigorous research and testing has gone missing.  None of our computer experts can locate the data in the Ark computers. Most importantly, Miys cannot locate it either.”

Tyche slammed the voice mute from our side as I surged to my feet. “They WHAT???!”

“We have had to reconstruct our research twice, once from zero, and once from memory and passive storage, just in the time since we joined with their fleet,” Grey continued, clearly unable to hear my roaring objection. “Since the second incident, we keep any new data on passive storage only.”

I stomped, hands fisted, growling at this new information. My databand vibrated, and I shook my wrist ferociously to open it, fully intending to dismiss. Rather than being from Arthur, it was from Pranav. “We only recently determined with the support of Miys that this was due to Eko-mari influence, which is why it has not been brought to the attention of the Council. Prior to Gamma shift yesterday, it was believed to be system error or human error.”

The feeling of being out of the loop subsided, but the anger at the overstep from the Eko-mari remained.

“Yes, we are aware. We have been attempting to interfere with the direct loss of earned data to the best of our abilities,” Odvub confirmed. “Miys alerted us and have been instrumental in ensuring we are able to facilitate your research to the best of our functions.”

“Oh.” Grey paused, clear that this was new information.  Good to know I wasn’t the only one who was entirely out of the loop. “That greatly lowers the need for explanation.” I could see in my mind how they would straighten their spine when they regained steady ground. “We have come to the determination that, in addition to loss of hard earned knowledge, we would be prevented from any gains regarding stellar observations from Von if the Eko-mari fleet were entrenched as quarantine patrol.”

“This would contravene the Terran taboo against censorship,” Odvub stated unequivocally. “There is an established right among refugee species to maintain social taboos. This is a valid concern.”

“On those grounds - violation of taboo on multiple levels - will you agree to be our petitioner to the Galactic Council?”

I didn’t need to see my peers to know that we all held a collective breath.

I went into Twisted Hate expecting to not like it; 1.) because from the first two books I was not a fan of Jules and 2.) someone told me I was going to HATE Josh Chen.

After reading it, I LOVED IT!

I kind of figured Jules’ persona was a front, but learning of her past made me feel for her. And then Josh dealing with his past betrayals, it just hurt all the more when his trust was broken yet again. Jules and Josh’s love story is a chaotic one, but so far it’s been the most beautiful as they overcome their pasts together.

For most of the book, I didn’t understand why I was told I was going to hate Josh.. but when THAT scene came up I freakin’ bawled. I’ve never felt so bad for a character like I did with this book. But no worries, as the two previous books were, this one is a HEA.

So who in totals travelled with the doctor? I know we saw donna, but what other companions are there?

This is gonna be a big one, so *Takes a deep breath* In his first incarnation, the First Doctor started his travels with his granddaughter Susan, accidentally taking her school teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright. Along his travels, people would come and go, including Vicki Pallister, Steven Taylor, Katarina, Sara Kingdom, Oliver Harper, Dodo Chaplet, Ben Jackson and Polly Wright.

In his second incarnation, the Second Doctor would continue his travels with Ben and Polly, taking on Jamie McCrimmon, who would stick with him through his life. Along the way, The Doctor would also travel with Victoria Waterfield and Zoe Heriot. It was during this time that The Doctor would also meet Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, who would become an important figure during his most of his lives.

In exile is his third incarnation, the Third Doctor was forced to work with the Brigadier as UNIT's scientific advisor. Working initially with Liz Shaw, Mike Yates and John Benton, he would finally be able to travel again, first with Jo Grant, and later Sarah-Jane Smith.

In his fourth incarnation, continuing to travel with Sarah-Jane Smith and joined by Harry Sullivan, the Fourth Doctor would go on to travel with Naomi Cross, Leela of the Sevateem, Margaret Hopwood, two models of the robot dog K9, "Anne Kelso", Romana in two of her incarnations and Adric.

In his fifth incarnation, The Doctor continued travelling with Adric and took on Nyssa of Trakken and Tegan Jovanka, who he had met towards the end of his previous incarnation. Along the way, he would also travel with Marc, Thomas Brewster, Hannah Bartholomew, Vislor Turlough, Peri Brown and Erimem.

Still travelling with Peri in his sixth incarnation, The Doctor would travel with others including Frobisher, Evelyn Smythe, Charlotte Pollard (retroactively under the guise of Mila due to already travelling with his Eighth Incarnation), Flip Jackson, Constance Clarke, Melanie Bush and Hebe Harrison.

Continuing to travel with Mel in his seventh Incarnation, the Doctor would go on to be joined by Ace McShane, Bernice Summerfield, Hex Schofield, Sally Morgan, Lysandra Aristedes, Mags, Raine Creevy, Elizabeth Klein, Will Arrowsmith, Chris Cwej and Roz Forrester, though ultimately ended up travelling on his home.

The Eighth Doctor would find himself starting afresh, briefly meeting Grace Holloway and Chang Lee, before going on to travel with Izzy Sinclair, Fitz Kreiner, Charlotte Pollard, C'rizz, Mary Shelley, Lucie Miller, Tamsin Drew, Molly O'Sullivan, Liv Chenka, Helen Sinclair, Tania Bell, Andy Davidson and Bliss.

The War Doctor would go on to make a point of travelling alone, never taking on a travelling companion during his life.

Though he would continue travelling alone for much of his life, the Ninth Doctor would finally yield and take on Rose Tyler as a companion, and later Adam Mitchell, Captain Jack Harkness and Tara Mishra

In his tenth incarnation, The Doctor would continue travelling with Rose, though would later go on to travel with Mickey Smith, Martha Jones, a returning Captain Jack, Donna Noble, Gabby Gonzalez, Cindy Wu, Anya Kingdom and Mark Seven.

The Eleventh Doctor would start his travels with Amy Pond, going on to take on Rory Williams, Alice Obiefune, John Jones, ARC, The Squire, Abslom Daak, The Sapling, Valerie Lockwood and Clara Oswald.

Clara Oswald would continue to travel with the Twelfth Doctor, who would go on to travel with Hattie Munroe, Nardole and Bill Potts.

In her Thirteenth Incarnation, the Doctor would spend her entire incarnation travelling Yasmin Khan, being joined by Ryan Sinclair, Graham O'Brien and Dan Lewis.

Throughout many of their lives, The Doctor would constantly meet River Song, though on many occasions would be forced to forget their encounters to preserve the web of time.
