4C - Part 2/2

Season 3 Episode 13

"You hear that, Finch? That's for you. Yeah, you just stuck this bird."

It's like Reese forgot that he was supposed to be mad at Finch, lol. Adrenaline and near death experiences will do that to you.

"You track me down, Harold?"

Harold just looks so tired here, like he's just done with it all and I think it's fair to say that Reese picks up on his distressed emotional state as well since his tone is soft and nonconfrontational and he's actually being considerate for the first time in the entire episode.

"Just flew in to get Owen situated with a new identity and destination."

"Is that it?"

John is definitely fishing for something if his dialogue is any indication. I think that he wants Harold to say that he came for him, that he won't leave unless John comes back home with him. But what he gets instead is a heartfelt (if unnecessary) apology from Harold for how the machine is behaving.

"Mr. Reese, I understand your frustration with the opacity of the machine. But there's a reason I chose to make it that way. The machine only gives us numbers, because I would always rather that a human element remain in determining something so critical as someone's fate."

"We have free will. And with that comes great responsibility and sometimes great loss. I miss her dearly too."

I have no words, just vague crying. 😭

"When are you leaving?"

"Soon."

"I thought I would go see this exhibit at the Giorgio de Chirico house-museum... An artist that Grace was very fond of. You're welcome to join me."

John's little smile here! Awwww!

"I'm not sure I can, Finch."

He's so sad about his offer to spend time together being so easily rejected. ☹

But...all hope is not lost.

"While I'm in Italy, I thought I'd get fitted for a new suit."

I find it interesting that Hatold suggested going to see an artist that his ex-girlfriend liked and John instead met him with a counter-offer of going to get him fitted for a suit. Something that he probably sees as their thing. Obviously, Harold likes buying stuff for John and usually picking out/purchasing clothing for someone else to wear is pretty intimate. Way more intimate than going to a museum to look at art.

And don't even get me started on the power dynamics of their relationship.

"Oh, of course. We should call my atelier in the Via Palestro. See if Gianni could fit you in after lunch. He's the best."

people are drawing Steamboat Willie Mickey doing all this crazy shit and whatnot, but you could always do that. you can do that now, with current Mickey, just fine. it's fanart and it's legally protected. hell you could take Disney-drawn Mickey and put a caption about unions or whatever on it and it would still be protected under free speech and sometimes even parody law.

what is special about public domain is that you can SELL him. you could take a screenshot and sell it on a tshirt. you can use him to advertise your plumbing business. people have already uploaded and monetized the original film.

you could always have Mickey say what you want, but now you can profit off it.

"You computer guys, you build something you can't control and when it backfires, you won't accept responsibility."

"Have you really made anything better. Does it look like you've stopped the violence?"

And John is well aware that Harold is listening in on this conversation, he's just projecting onto Owen in this moment. So while he may be talking to Owen, his words are definitely meant for Harold.

It's a very passive-aggressive way to wound Harold, make him hurt as much as John is hurting.

And boy does it work.

He looks devastated that this is what John really thinks of him, but he's not gonna defend himself cause there's a tiny voice in his head telling him that John's right.

Even though we've been shown over and over again that Harold first got the idea to mess around with technology and try to build an AI because he'd wanted to help his father.

Like, nothing this man does is selfish or holds ill intent, Harold genuinely has good motivations, which makes John's whole rant just him being a colossal dick, regardless of his grief over Joss' death.

"Okay, are we still talking about me? 'Cause it seems like you're mad at somebody else."

And Owen was absolutely right to call John out on his admittedly shitty coping mechanism of trying to pin all his grief onto Harold, like Joss' death was somehow his fault simply 'cause he built the machine. What a crock load a bull.

I've had really close friends -who I trusted- who've blamed me for shit that was outta my control, and trust me, it does not feel nice.

This was a particularly hard episode to watch because -in general I hate watching good friends blame each other for things that were no ones fault- but more because it's Harold and John specifically. They have such a close bond so it's painful to hear them argue and see John being so distrustful of Harold. It's almost like we're back at square one, the pilot episode.

it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...
