You don't hear it first.

Tired, right in your apartment, taking a nap while Ghost works over some documents that you were supposed to work over with him—he's kind enough not to wake you since he knows how much you have to hold.

Maybe that's why he picks up the baby the moment she cries, cooing. Such a large, violent man, with war in his head, haunted by ghosts of the past, has your baby in his arms, being the softest he can. Whispering soothing words on her anxious little mind, overwhelmed by the storm that's happening outside.

It's the lightning that wakes you. Not the angry baby, nor the Simon that does his best to put the baby back to sleep.

For a moment, you're scared. Unable to find a baby, anxious, when you leave your bedroom in a hurry, just to see the idyllic picture of your baby girl and Simon.

"I've got it, mama," he murmurs. Low, not to wake up the baby that's already closing her eyes. You know it's the span of seconds and she’s gonna be in her happy place again. 

“You can give her to me. It’s not your duty—”

“—but somethin’ I want to do,” he cuts you off, shaking his head. “She woke up, and I was near, so… not a big deal.”

It is a big deal. At least, a big deal for you—you can’t really remember when your husband decided to do this for his own baby. It was always a problem; he’s tired, exhausted, he’s done it before. Excuses, nothing else, but excuses.

Despite your thoughts, you smile a little. “Right. Got those fatherly instincts?” You raise your eyebrow, teasingly. He huffs, but before he says something, you place a kiss on his cheek. “Thank you.”

The minute he frowns, you think you overcrossed a boundary. You're quick to open your mouth to blabber something about being sorry, but you don't get to say it.

Because his lips are on yours the second after.

It's not a heated kiss, like you would expect it. It's a slow one, full of emotions, just like he is. Longing, deep one, can be felt through his movements, as he'd want to remember the shape of your lips.

what is your current ranking of the hunger games books? loved your sotr vlog 🫶

i think my ranking might be controversial?? but as of now it’s:

1. mockingjay

2. catching fire

3. the hunger games

4. ballad of songbirds and snakes

5. sunrise on the reaping

some explanations loll:

the original trilogy is hard for me to rank because it really depends on which one i’m reading, and i always binge read them so they kinda blend into one lol. catching fire used to be my favorite (and sometimes it still is) but i do think each book is better than the last, and mockingjay is the perfect conclusion to the story. also the last chapter and epilogue alone automatically make that one my favorite.

between ballad and sunrise, although i much prefer reading from haymitch’s perspective and i LOVE how much character development it provides and how many dots it connects, i think ballad is an overall better book. the themes ballad explores were entirely new to the series and it provided the necessary context for us to better understand the history and politics of panem and the hunger games. that book does so much world building that it feels essential to the original series in a way that sotr doesn’t. that’s not to say i’m not glad we have sotr because now that we know haymitch’s story, i can’t imagine not having it. but we didn’t NEED it to understand how the hunger games work, or that the reapings are rigged, or how vindictive and cruel snow is, or anything else about the world because all of that was information we’d already gotten (or could at least infer) from previous books. everything new that we learn is about how haymitch’s story in particular is manipulated. which is great for character developments sake but not entirely necessary for world building or expanding the political themes of the narrative.

i said this in my video too, but i think the themes explored in sotr get a little heavy handed at times and occasionally don’t feel fully fleshed out. it’s a very straightforward book (thematically speaking) which isn’t inherently a problem, but i prefer how complex, uncomfortable, and intricate ballad feels in comparison. sotr is mostly a book about character while tbosas, i think, blends character, plot, and politics perfectly.

so while sotr is definitely the more emotional and heartbreaking of the two, i truly believe ballad is some of her best (but also her most misunderstood) work all around.

AKATSUKI: DREAM VACATIONS EDITION

Tobi

Obito goes back to Konoha and blends in, passing among the people who live in the village like he still belongs there. This absolutely enrages him. He likes to watch people do all the things Rin won't. It's at least 75% self harm. The remaining 25% is just getting the opportunity to play cruel pranks on random strangers who happen to live in the village. Please get some goddamn help, Obito.

Pein

With regard to the context of how tired and pained he seems in canon, Nagato would benefit most from a staycation in which he decouples himself from the black receivers for a while. Just let him lie down and rest for a while. Get him a snack. Maybe a Fujikaze Yukie marathon? Her movies are very idealistic, that's pretty appealing.

Konan

Don't tell Hidan, but she's going to the Land of Hot Water. For the hot springs! She's going to go to an extremely advanced hot springs/spa type place and plant herself there for at least a week. The Land of Hot Water is perfect because, although it's not the closest beautification/wellness/relaxation retreat featuring hot springs, it has the benefit of now being utterly without a regular shinobi presence — so there's no reason for any wayward spymasters to be taking a work trip out that way. Listen, she lived with Jiraiya for three years. She's kind of got bathhouse trauma.

Zetsu

He rarely gets sent to locations frequented by civilians. His vacation is people-watching at the daimyo's court! It's a little like a butterfly house and a little like a performance. He spends the whole week murmuring quietly to himself (the only company he needs) about the intrigues and intense social politics he's observing.

Sasori

Museums and ancient sites. He has very strong feelings about the decay of these sites and objects over time and their methods of preservation and restoration. Sometimes he's genuinely fascinated to see what people are doing to preserve objects that are, like, 3000 years old and made of wood? There's always more to learn. But sometimes he steps into a municipal museum and he feels bitter and vastly superior. What are they even trying to do here?

Deidara

Okay, Deidara's DREAM vacation is just following Sasori around on HIS vacation and blowing up every site he visits to make a point about the inevitability of entropy. But since he's not actively trying to pick a fight, you'll probably find him squatting in some derelict and abandoned place, planning an enormous performance. It's not always about the size of the explosion — bigger is great, sure, but there are considerations of other qualities. Deidara truly is never happier than when he's plotting something that will go off with a REALLY big bang.

Itachi

He lives a life of excitement, noise and frequent disappointments. For his dream vacation he will have the time and the leisure to take a quiet and sedate little tour of the world-famous teahouses in Tea country. He will sample all of the seasonal wagashi, drink all of the tea, and enjoy the peace, quiet and rest. He will slowly hike between his planned inns during the day. The sun is shining. The birds are singing. It's a nice bit of countryside...

Kisame

He may want to STAY on a boat and have all the privacy of his own little home on the water and get to take it wherever he likes, but Kisame is not a quiet fishing trip guy. He's an Adventure Activities Holiday kind of guy. He will be grudgingly paying the absurd dock fees to leave his little boat somewhere for a few days just so he can trek over a mountain and go white water rafting or some shit.

Kakuzu

Kakuzu... doesn't take vacations. They're expensive and he doesn't really see the point. If he wants to go somewhere, he'll find work there. However, arguably, his life is just one long vacation at this point, since 90% of what he does is travel to exciting new locations to kill people. That aside, he will always make time to visit a rare book fair if one's in town. An easy, lucrative contract, an interesting old book, cheap accommodation and good weather to travel in: that's what he wants.

Hidan

Hidan's idea of a vacation is going to large, crowded cities and gifting them himself as their brand new urban legend/local cryptid/serial killer. His best holiday to date has been one in which his latest string of murders started a riot: 15 dead, 47 wounded, janitor very unhappy. Praise Jashin, he's been trying to top that high ever since.

Orochimaru

Orochimaru will spend the week lying on a pristine, private beach, sunbathing. He will bring one of his beloved little minions as a personal attendant to bring him cocktails on a schedule and to present an easy target for his amusement (it's important that it be someone he knows and likes — he enjoys provoking people he likes, not strangers to whom he's indifferent). He will definitely get bored of tormenting his attendant and lazing about within about three days, pack up and leave, sure. But the R&R portion of the trip is actually very rewarding. Sometimes you just need to sun yourself on a rock for a few days.

ok i drew this back in September 2022 when i was doing a passive rewatch of every Porky and Daffy short in chronological order while i was working--drawn because i RRRRREEEALLY love how accepting and often enabling the early Porky is with the early Daffy’s hysteria. there's something genuinely sweet and funny about Porky just sort of chalking him up to his esoteric, silly little friend (esoteric, silly little friend is causing horrific atrocities). especially refreshing in an age where modern material seems to completely reduce Porky's tolerance for Daffy's screwiness (but a bit understandably so)

As one friend put it, “he never needs to do it because someone’s always crawling up his leg.” Well, yes, but during those rare dry spells the man does have to tend to business now and again in order to maintain that… sunshine-y personality. He’s an every-other-day practitioner, every third day at most. By the fourth day he is considerably irritable. No unnecessary props or entertainment or all that. It’s purely perfunctory, mainly manual, and it's typically a nighttime affair. His only indulgence is lube. Perhaps afterward he can get some decent rest.

Twillight

This boy makes self-care a part of his daily routine, every day. Why the hell did you think he was so nice?? He’s one to sneak away for an afternoon nap, or at least some quiet time alone in his room, and that door is locked. He likes videos, the short free ones you find on any generic site, but he watches them muted for fear of discovery. He likes to be mostly-clothed, just unzipping his jeans and holding the hem of his shirt in his teeth. He likes having something in his mouth to bite on during. A lotion guy. If it’s a special night that he has some alone time, he might try to indulge in a bit of back door experimentation.

Wild

Our bby Wild is a twice-daily buddy, once as a little wake up treat and again as a wind-down activity before bed. Any encounters with partners or roommates are just a happy lil bonus in his day. He has vibes but can never remember to keep them charged, and he is very fond of insertables for solo play. He keeps it to his room and he’s generally quiet but the guys know, if not for the panting than for the blissed-out look on his face and mussed hair when he emerges. He does like pictures and seeks them out often for some solo inspo.

Champion

The definition of utilitarian, his needs are sporadic and taken care of with an efficient shower moment. It’s just another part of the routine for him. Wash the hair, scrub his arms, feel between his legs—Interested? No?—start rinsing. He does have a guilty pleasure for all things media, though, especially amateur. It’s just more realistic. Those episodes are spent in his room with the door locked and a chair in front of it. He passes it off as a post-workout nap.

Warriors

He is also a once-a-day-er because Warriors never denies himself anything pleasurable, ever. It’s a morning routine thing for him (unless the preceding night was particularly taxing), that way he can just hop in the shower right after to clean up and get on with his day. No media, no toys, just some silky lube and a rousing arm workout to start the day.

Sky

It is a rare event for him to indulge. And by that I mean once, twice a week. There is no shortage of interest, and he will give the little guy a friendly hand now and then, but he likes to wait most of the time. It’s better when he waits. I have two prevailing theories for this: one, Sunny might have a say in when he gets to, if that kind of play excites them both; two, you KNOW that boy is passing the FUCK out as soon as he’s finished. The risk of being discovered in a compromising position is therefore very, very high.

Wind

As a hot-blooded young man, he too is a once-a-day fiend, with the occasional second or even third round if the mood strikes him. There is no rhyme or reason to his timing. He likes videos best and will set up in bed with something playing on his monitor(s) and his headphones on. Likes bossy women. Also a lotion guy.

Four

Frequency varies between twice weekly to every day. Four shies away from any visual media, although he'll read stories now and then. He doesn't do things while he's reading, but he'll remember scenes sometimes and let them play out in his mind. It's a casual affair, something more about relieving tension than any surges of lust. It just feels good. And taking care of it himself is way better than involving other people (ew). Although he enjoys squishy silicone toys, it's more so that he can squish them than it is about using them. (You know how some dick designers offer little mini pours of silly things like little dragons or cats? That's what he likes.)

Legend

He's not an every-day guy, but when Legend goes for it he goes for it. We're talking toys, maybe rope, maybe wearing something special that he feels good in. We're talking multiple o's. Something something growing up homeless meant that moments of secure privacy were rare, so he had to make the most of them. It's a habit that dies hard.

Hyrule

During school, he'd sort of... forget about his needs until they roared to the surface, demanding immediate attention or else he was not going to study. Now that he's more secure in his fellowship years, Rulie tends to save those times of self-love for off days, which he only gets 2-3 a week. He's more apt to spend time with a partner than solo, anyway. It's just his preference.

Dark

No one's surprised that he's once a day, right? Sometimes it's a wake up thing, sometimes he waits until he gets in the shower. He'll just spit in his hand and go for it. There are occasions when he busts out a box of insertables from beneath his bed and has a grand ol' time to himself on a boring afternoon. He'll watch videos, he'll just fantasize, above all he's not picky. On those days when he knows he's seeing his boo that night, he might abstain, but that makes him VERY hungry later on in the day.

Shadow

He's incredibly secretive about his habits and preferences. He has a wide variety of implements including vibes, phallic objects, silicone eggs, you name it. He has only a moderate drive and will make use of them a couple times a month at most, although sessions are typically long-ish. What's that saying about 'doing what you love'? Yeah, well, when you make something fun into a job you kind of don't view it the same anymore.

Why do you think did Curly let Jimmy go before the crash? I've seen the theory Curly briefly thought about crashing too but didn't expect Jimmy to go through with it

I generally believe it was shock and a bit of denial.

It’s the sort of thing where Curly knew Jimmy enough to know he blows up at things but he never would’ve expected him to go through with something so crazy. He gives Jimmy way too much benefit. It’s just his nature and the dynamics he has with Jimmy. They have a stable relationship as friends but it’s stabilized by the unhealthy toxic aspects that keep him in it. He’s like this with Anya, taking the gun is something he really shouldn’t have kept off the record, so is Swansea’s feigned hostility toward Daisuke. He doesn’t want to get people in trouble and doesn’t want to believe anyone would cause trouble other than to themselves. He’s a very lenient man.

I think the words were hollow in his head. Said but not really meant like all the times Jimmy lashes out and says something cruel to him or others. He never means it, if he did why would he still be Curly’s friend? Curly’s head wasn’t in the right space in that moment, he just got through panicking with Anya and if the sound design is anything to go by, was panicked and preoccupied going to confront Jimmy. I mean, the flash of the warning signs before he runs back are identical to the dissociative episode of sort he has when going to talk to Jimmy to do his Psyc eval.

There is this sort of assumption in fanon that Curly was the idealic person for the job and simply failed. None of them were the idealic people to be there, it’s Curly’s entire concern with the ladder he chose. I see more interpretations of him being purposefully ignorant where I see him as just always looking the wrong way or not in a place where he can see it. There’s something different about seeing something than being told about it in the human mind. It may just be the psych student in me but Curly def has some sort of cognitive dissonance just like Jimmy but when it comes to his role as a Captain vs who he is.

They blur in his head to where if you ask him if he was acting as a Captain or a friend or himself to his crew he couldn’t answer. Not with confidence even if he did. There are many times we see that Curly himself is not in the right headspace to lead the Tulpar and that’s outside of anything with Jimmy. He’s spacey, he’s not sleeping, he’s deeply unhappy with himself and life. It’s why there’s believability he crashed the ship. Maybe the others saw it, or maybe Jimmy heard enough of it to spin it in a way that made Curly seem suicidally depressed.

So the tdlr is I think it wasn’t so much letting Jimmy go, more so not seeing the severity of what he was allowing to transpire. In his mind it’s just another one of Jimmy’s bluffs, cruel words, off words but just words. Jimmy rarely ever acts, why would he now? Maybe he’s never seen it because Jimmy hides those actions? Either way, he just never thought he’d really do it.

I know that many ppl think that lwj's main conflict is that he put the rules of his clan above actual, real righteousness and bc of that I think too many ppl try to put him down and say that before wwx he didn't know what is morally correct and what's not and attribute his moral standing entirely to wwx

but, imo, his conflict is more external, not rules vs self but more his own righteousness vs what others, especially his elders and family, claim to be correct. he didn't help wwx more not bc he was unsure whether wwx was right or wrong in helping the wens, but more about his own filial duty and the attitudes of his elders and ppl whose opinion he valued and trusted towards the situation. and yes, he was in a better position to help wwx than, for example, jiang yanli, but his situation was still not ideal — and despite it he still tried his best and, if I remember correctly, spoke for wwx even before the yiling date

Disagree. Lan Wangji has never valued or trusted others' opinions over his own morality and actions. The "Lan Wangji is a stickler for rules and wants to be the Lan's golden child" idea in the book is just as false as "Wei Wuxian was a natural troublemaker who caused issues for everyone, and that's why he ended up evil hated" idea is. It was an image of Lan Wangji meant to be deconstructed by actually seeing his character in real time. Lan Wangji at 6 unflinchingly faced punishment for refusing to budge from his mother's doorstep because no one would give him an explanation for why he couldn't see his mother despite having fulfilled the proper requirements. Lan Wangji at 16 kept pets, which was against the rules, because Wei Wuxian gifted him rabbits. Lan Wangji during the war risked resentment from his fellow cultivators by persistently attempting to convince Wei Wuxian to give up the ghost path mid-war. Lan Wangi in his 20s was debating how to convince Wei Wuxian to follow him back to Gusu despite his uncle's dislike of the other man, spoke up for Wei Wuxian publicly multiple times including during the emergency conference, helped him bring Wen Ning back to consciousness in the Burial Mounds despite this being clear manipulation of resentful energy that his uncle raged against, and spoke up for the Wen siblings during their sham trial. He never struggled about what his clan believed was correct because he has always had his own strong sense of righteousness that he followed.

There was no "helping" Wei Wuxian because, while fandom likes to focus on food and money as a problem, the actual problem was that the rest of the cultivation world were genocidal bigots dedicated to destroying a whole people as petty revenge against a man that had already been killed and a clan that had already been soundly defeated. No matter how many times Lan Wangji spoke up for them, the Wen remnants still died. No matter how Lan Wangji spoke or physically fought for him, Wei Wuxian still died. And when Lan Wangji stood by Wei Wuxian's side in his second life, speaking up for him and physically defending him, instead of the cultivation world to take his words built on a 20-year humanitarian reputation into account, they turn on him, too, during the second siege. So what else, exactly, was Lan Wangji supposed to do for Wei Wuxian in his first life that would have prevented the tragedy that befell everyone?
