"An international research team has found almost a million potential sources of antibiotics in the natural world.

Research published in the journal Cell by a team including Queensland University of Technology (QUT) computational biologist Associate Professor Luis Pedro Coelho has used machine learning to identify 863,498 promising antimicrobial peptides -- small molecules that can kill or inhibit the growth of infectious microbes.

The findings of the study come with a renewed global focus on combatting antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as humanity contends with the growing number of superbugs resistant to current drugs.

"There is an urgent need for new methods for antibiotic discovery," Professor Coelho, a researcher at the QUT Centre for Microbiome Research, said. The centre studies the structure and function of microbial communities from around the globe.

"It is one of the top public health threats, killing 1.27 million people each year." ...

"Using artificial intelligence to understand and harness the power of the global microbiome will hopefully drive innovative research for better public health outcomes," he said.

The team verified the machine predictions by testing 100 laboratory-made peptides against clinically significant pathogens. They found 79 disrupted bacterial membranes and 63 specifically targeted antibiotic-resistant bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

"Moreover, some peptides helped to eliminate infections in mice; two in particular reduced bacteria by up to four orders of magnitude," Professor Coelho said.

In a preclinical model, tested on infected mice, treatment with these peptides produced results similar to the effects of polymyxin B -- a commercially available antibiotic which is used to treat meningitis, pneumonia, sepsis and urinary tract infections.

More than 60,000 metagenomes (a collection of genomes within a specific environment), which together contained the genetic makeup of over one million organisms, were analysed to get these results. They came from sources across the globe including marine and soil environments, and human and animal guts.

The resulting AMPSphere -- a comprehensive database comprising these novel peptides -- has been published as a publicly available, open-access resource for new antibiotic discovery.

In a groundbreaking advancement, researchers from Stanford University have developed a speech brain-computer interface (BCI) that holds significant promise for individuals with paralysis. By capturing neural signals generated during attempted speech through intracortical microelectrode arrays, this novel BCI achieved remarkable results. A participant afflicted with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), rendering them unable to speak coherently, achieved an impressive 9.1% word error rate with a 50-word vocabulary and a 23.8% error rate with a vast 125,000-word vocabulary. This marks the first successful demonstration of decoding speech from a large vocabulary using such technology. Notably, the BCI enabled speech decoding at a rapid pace of 62 words per minute, surpassing prior records by 3.4 times. Encouragingly, the study revealed neural patterns that facilitate accurate decoding from a small cortical region and retained detailed speech representations even after years of paralysis. These findings illuminate a promising path toward restoring efficient communication for paralyzed individuals who have lost the ability to speak.

The organization of orofacial movement and speech production within the motor cortex at a single-neuron resolution is not very well-known. To explore this, neural activity was recorded through four microelectrode arrays, two in the ventral premotor cortex (area 6v) and two in area 44, a component of Broca’s area. The participant, who had bulbar-onset ALS, exhibited restricted orofacial movement and vocalization capabilities but lacked intelligible speech. The findings revealed distinct patterns in area 6v, where strong tuning was observed across all tested movement categories.

This encompassed the successful decoding of various orofacial movements, phonemes, and words with high accuracy. In contrast, area 44, previously linked to higher-order speech aspects, exhibited negligible information related to these categories. Interestingly, speech decoding proved more precise in the ventral array, particularly during the instructed delay phase, aligning with language-associated networks identified through fMRI data.

Researchers experimenting with artificial intelligence have found that these tools seem to reliably detect breast cancer, while also reducing a demanding workload for radiologists.  Breast cancer is the most common cancer among adults, with more than 2.3 million cases diagnosed each year, according to the World Health Organization. In most countries, the illness is one of the top two leading causes of cancer deaths in women.  But research shows that early detection and treatment can save lives.  To increase screening capacity and better identify high and low risk breast cancer, two recent studies show that specific applications of artificial intelligence (AI) performed similarly to highly trained radiologists.   "I think that breast imaging, especially mammography, [is] one of the front runners when it comes to the maturity of these AI tools," said Kristina Lång, lead author on one of the studies. Lång's research, which was published in the Lancet Oncology journal last month, is the first of its kind to use AI to detect breast cancer from mammograms in a randomized control trial.  Preliminary results of the Swedish trial show that AI detected more cancer, while keeping false positives to a minimum.

I lack any artistic talent, which frustrates me deeply. Despite managing a few rudimentary creations over time, the vast, beautiful ideas in my mind elude proper expression on paper or in Photoshop, intensifying my discontent.

This inability triggers profound feelings of anxiety, depression, and anger, as sometimes words alone fail to convey my thoughts. Consequently, when crafting a blog post, I turn to AI to generate relevant and unique images, aligning with my vision. Although I lack artistic prowess, AI art enables me to articulate the creative concepts swirling in my mind, easing the weight of negative emotions stemming from traditional creative limitations.

For me it is a tool that soothes my brain, and it has an important position in my life as a result.

Someone pointed out that they haven't heard many complaints from artists regarding individuals creating AI art for personal use. Instead, the primary concern seems to be about those who falsely claim ownership or attempt to profit from AI-generated creations.

While I'm uncertain if my personal experience aligns with this observation (as it seems many are quick to criticize anyone dabbling in AI), I do agree with the sentiment. Disputing ownership or seeking financial gain from AI art, which I would never do, goes against my principles.

I wouldn't classify myself as either "pro-AI" or "anti-AI," considering my use of it. I suppose I'm more AI-neutral, although dissenters often categorize anyone not adhering to their specific viewpoint.

I'm not endorsing the questionable origins of AI art source material, as there are significant ethical concerns that must be addressed. Unfortunately, I don't have the solutions readily available.

Similar to my approach to shopping and dining, where I often prioritize my mental health challenges and disabilities over socio-political considerations due to the prevalent flaws in most companies at the end of the day, I utilize tools like AI to cope with those disabilities and improve my daily life.

I don't feel guilty about this.

II- The Hypothesis Explanation In Details Let's remember the paper first hypothesis The solar system is one energy moves in space and reflects 3 times - the points of the reflection are the planets- as a result- the planets are created depending on each other by this energy reflection.

A recent study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology reveals a groundbreaking artificial intelligence ( AI) tool, ‘DeepHRD, ‘that can predict how vulnerable a cancer is to platinum-based chemotherapy using routine histopathology slides. This development, led by scientists at the University of California, San Diego, could drastically improve cancer treatment and bring faster, more accurate care to patients.

There has been growing interest in precision medicine for cancer care. This approach tailors treatments to individual patients using their genetic makeup. To make treatment decisions based on tumor biology, specific somatic molecular alterations need to be identified. One such alteration is Homologous Recombination Deficiency (HRD), which exposes cancer cells to platinum-based chemotherapy and PARP inhibitors. Nonetheless, current means of detecting HRD involve complex genomic testing that is often time-consuming, costly, and not readily available to many patients.

To tackle this issue, the team developed DeepHRD, a deep learning algorithm that can interpret traditional hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained slides – the standard diagnostic tool for pathologists. By looking at visual patterns on these slides, DeepHRD makes remarkably accurate predictions of HRD.

So I May Indeed Talk A Bit Of Programming On My Tumblr

So, I decided that I will still probably post about programming some on my Tumblr seeing as a lot of you originally knew me from when I was analyzing data on the disease that I have. I have done quite a bit more lately on Machine Learning and I will be posting some write ups here soon for you all to show you what I've been up to!

Also, I am feeling absolutely awful so I haven't been doing anything but coding tbh because video games give me a headache at the moment. I have to go to the dentist tomorrow to get my teeth ripped out (I have 9 abscesses from a disease that my grandma and her mom had of their jaw bones that I somehow got). Don't know much more than that but I will keep you all updated.

The new virus detection and identification methodology is described in a paper published in ACS Nano, authored by Department of Physics DPhil student Nicolas Shiaelis along with corresponding authors Professor Achillefs Kapanidis from the Department of Physics and Dr. Nicole Robb from the University of Warwick and Visiting Lecturer at Oxford's Department of Physics.

The paper demonstrates how machine learning can significantly improve the efficiency, accuracy and time taken to not only identify different types of viruses, but also differentiate between strains.
