In this week’s post, I dive into my love/hate relationship with artificial intelligence — as an artist, a sci-fi fan, and someone who’s handed their elf drawing to a robot (And, well, sort of liked the result).

It is not Gen Z alone. We cannot make an example out of the generation that was given the worst cards by their grandparents, parents, government, and society as a whole.

As a younger Millennial, I can tell you older people are using AI as much as younger people are and becoming dumber, too. Not only dumber but obtuse to fact-checking and correction.

I can't believe people are actually becoming inconvenienced by the concept of “thinking critically.” Why are you going to universities and schools if you don't want to learn? Imagine going into college with debt and also not learning anything. Recession is all-time high, people with skills have no jobs, how do you expect to find employment without learning the basics.

On top of it, humans are offloading their emotional thinking! Numbing down the brain's emotional part, cutting down on the labour that one needs to build and maintain relationships, is how you turn a blind eye to the cracks in society. This is how communities fall apart and individuals become lonely. And left inapt to deal with the turmoils that come with living a human life. Being a human means there will be suffering and problems. You cannot cheat your way out of life by not engaging your brain.

We didn't evolve as a species to stunt our progress like this. Our minds are what set us apart and make us who we are. If we wanted to be NPCS, we would've still been running naked in the jungles.

Offload your thinking minds now and be doomed for the future.

I don't even need to interact with multiple AI users to see the connection between the rise of right-wing rhetoric, anti-intellectualism, disregard for creative fields, late-stage capitalism, violent patriarchy, and growing intolerance to see how it all boils down to young and old people chucking their thinking boots out and putting cotton balls in their ears. As long as they are not inconvenienced by the concerns, they are going to keep selling their humanity bit by bit for scraps.

I could go on and on about this long trail of how we reached here, but will become another long ass rant! Which I do not wish to write here.

While it can take some context into account (like the previous messages in a conversation), it may struggle with complex or ambiguous situations, especially if they require a deep understanding of cultural, social, or personal nuances.

Humans: Humans are highly sensitive to context, using it to interpret meaning and guide their communication. They can understand subtext, read between the lines, and adjust their communication based on subtle cues like tone, body language, and shared history with the other person.

8. Ethical and Moral Considerations:

AI: AI lacks an inherent sense of ethics or morality. Its communication is governed by the data it has been trained on and the parameters set by its developers. Any ethical considerations in AI communication come from human-designed rules or guidelines, not from an intrinsic understanding of right or wrong.

Humans: Human communication is deeply influenced by ethical and moral considerations. People often weigh the potential impact of their words on others, considering issues like honesty, fairness, and respect. These considerations are shaped by individual values, cultural norms, and societal expectations.

The key differences between AI and human communication lie in the underlying mechanisms, the presence or absence of intent and understanding, and the role of emotions, creativity, and ethics. While AI can simulate certain aspects of human communication, it fundamentally operates in a different way, lacking the consciousness, experience, and meaning-making processes that characterize human interaction.

I feel like, with the uproar over Nanowrimo right now, we have an opportunity to really push back at shitty AI, but I feel like we also need to be smart about it.

Just saying "Generative AI is bad! Fuck you!" is not going to make a huge dent in shitty ai practices, because they'll just dismiss us out of hand. But if we ask the really hard hitting questions, then we might be able to start making some level of progress.

Mozilla is actually doing a ton of good work towards this very goal.

They've been working to try to shift industry goals towards more transparent, conscientious, and sustainable practices, and I think their approach has a lot of promise.

AI is not inherently bad or harmful (hells, even generative AI isn't. It's just a tool, thus neutral at its core), but harmful practices and a lack of transparency make it to where we can not fucking trust them, at least in their current iterations.

But the cat is out of the fucking bag, and its not going back in even if we do point out all the harm. Too many people like the idea of making their lives easier, and you can't deny the overwhelming potential that AI offers.

But that doesn't mean we have to tolerate the harm it currently causes.

He concentrates on the competition between these two countries in AI and the various contributions to the advancement of the technology made by each. He highlights China’s advantage, thanks in part to its larger population. 

China’s significant investment so far in AI is discussed, and its chances of becoming a global leader in AI. Lee believes that cooperation between the countries will help shape the future of global power dynamics and therefore the economic development of the world.

In thes book, Lee states AI has the ability to transform economies by creating new job opportunities with massive impact on all sectors.

Images created through the use of generative AI programs such as Stable Diffusion, Midjourney, and Dall-E.

This post explains what that means for you. We know it’s impossible to remove all images created by Generative AI on Pillowfort. The goal of this new policy, however, is to send a clear message that we are against the normalization of commercializing and distributing images created by Generative AI. Pillowfort stands in full support of all creatives who make Pillowfort their home. Disclaimer: The following policy was shaped in collaboration with Pillowfort Staff and international university researchers. We are aware that Artificial Intelligence is a rapidly evolving environment. This policy may require revisions in the future to adapt to the changing landscape of Generative AI.

Why is Generative AI Banned on Pillowfort?

Our Terms of Service already prohibits copyright violations, which includes reposting other people’s artwork to Pillowfort without the artist’s permission; and because of how Generative AI draws on a database of images and text that were taken without consent from artists or writers, all Generative AI content can be considered in violation of this rule. We also had an overwhelming response from our user base urging us to take action on prohibiting Generative AI on our platform.

How does Pillowfort define Generative AI?

As of February 9, 2024 we define Generative AI as online tools for producing material based on large data collection that is often gathered without consent or notification from the original creators.

Generative AI tools do not require skill on behalf of the user and effectively replace them in the creative process (ie - little direction or decision making taken directly from the user). Tools that assist creativity don't replace the user. This means the user can still improve their skills and refine over time. 

For example: If you ask a Generative AI tool to add a lighthouse to an image, the image of a lighthouse appears in a completed state. Whereas if you used an assistive drawing tool to add a lighthouse to an image, the user decides the tools used to contribute to the creation process and how to apply them.

How can I tell if a software I use contains Generative AI?

A general rule of thumb as a first step is you can try testing the software by turning off internet access and seeing if the tool still works. If the software says it needs to be online there’s a chance it’s using Generative AI and needs to be explored further.
