So this is really random, and no one asked for this, but have my nationality headcanons for a whole load of asoue/atwq characters.?? No real explanation for these hcs, it's just how I imagine the characters ! :) (might throw in some extra hcs along the way because why not.)

P.S I'm quite fascinated by the history of the colonisation of America and the patterns of immigration that occurred thereafter, which is partially why I'm making this post. However, I'm not American and have never received actual American education so I'm sorry if I am miseducated in any regard.

Esmé Squalor is British/Syrian

HC: she is a first generation immigrant to the USA when the events of the books take place. Her mother was Syrian and her father British. She has a twin brother who disagreed with her involvement in VFD and left the USA to go back to England once they were of age. She hasn't seen him since they were teenagers.

Jerome Squalor is British-American

HC: His parents immigrated to the USA from England before he was born.

Bertrand Baudelaire is French

HC: He is a first-generation immigrant and went to the USA on his own after the death of his parents.

Beatrice Baudelaire is American

HC: By the time she was born, her family had been in the USA for many generations. Some British and Irish ancestry.

The Snicket siblings are Chinese-American

HC: the Snicket siblings are second-generation immigrants to the USA. Both of their parents were Chinese.

Mrs (headcanoned first name Marzia) Quagmire is Italian-American

HC: she is a second generation immigrant. She grew up in a household that primarily spoke Italian.

Mr (headcanoned first name William) Quagmire is American

HC: like Bea, his family had been in the USA for many generations before his birth. British and Dutch ancestry.

Count Olaf is German-American

HC: Olaf is a second or third generation immigrant. His family were very wealthy but went to ruin and ran away to the USA. He still insists on keeping his ancestral title despite this.

Montgomery Montgomery is Pakistani-American

HC: Monty is a second-gen immigrant. He had three siblings who all moved across the USA once of age, but he made an effort to keep in touch with them and their extended family in Pakistan.

Ellington Feint is Chinese-American

HC: Ellington is a second-gen immigrant. Her father was American with British ancestry and her mother was a first-gen Chinese immigrant.

Captain (headcanoned first name Rory) Widdershins is Irish-American

HC: a third-gen immigrant who grew up very disconnected from his heritage due to being in the foster system.

Fernald "Widdershins" is Moroccan/American

HC: him and his sister Fiona (and theorised sister Friday) had an American mother and Moroccan father. Their father left before they were born and mother left when Fiona was young, so they were raised by Widdershins. They know very little about their heritage.

Moxie Mallahan is American

HC: her family had been in the USA for many generations before her birth. Distant British and Dutch ancestry.

Arthur Poe is American

HC: Poe and his wife both had generations of family in the USA. He has some Dutch ancestry.

Josephine Anwhistle is American

HC: her family had also been in the USA for many generations. She had distant Irish ancestry. She made effort to reconnect with her ancestry in some regards.

Ike Anwhistle is American

HC: Ike, too, had family for generations in the USA. Canonically in the books, he is the second cousin of one of the Baudelaire parents (I hc him on Bea's side of the family) so in my headcanon, his ancestry is British/Irish. His brother, Gregor, is obviously the same.

The Denouement triplets are American

HC: the triplets are third-generation immigrants with British and Dutch ancestry. Mother's side British and father's side Dutch. There had been plans to raise the triplets in England, but a mysterious friend of their mother convinced them to stay in the USA for reasons unknown...

Unfortunate Gen

The Baudelaire children are French-American

HC: Bea is American and Bertrand French, as stated above. They grew up speaking both languages fluently.

The Quagmire triplets are Italian-American

HC: their mother is Italian and their father American. Their mother and her parents made sure they grew up speaking Italian.

Fiona Widdershins is American/Moroccan

HC: As stated with Fernald above, her biological father was Moroccan, although her and Fernald never knew him nor that they were Moroccan.

Carmelita Spats is Dutch-American

HC: Carmelita is a fourth-generation immigrant and she has little connection to her ancestry due to not being in contact with her family anymore.

Beatrice Baudelaire II is Chinese-American

HC: as Kit is her mother, she has her ancestry, of course. I am personally a fan of the theory that Olaf is her father, not Dewey, so in this post, we'll say that his ancestry plays here too...

Ben (Violet's friend) is American

HC: Ben is American with British and Native American ancestry.

hey Zen! actually if you don't mind i like Kit better for a nickname! it reminds me of a character i loved from a series i read growing up 😁

okay, i don't actually know how unpopular this is but i'm rolling with it: Hange's sacrifice wasn't entirely selfless that day they flew to their death; they actually wanted an out/to kill themself and that just happened to coincide with them helping their friends survive (two birds, one stone and all that shit). i think from what little we see of them as Commander, around the Marley Survey and then during the Jeagerists mutiny and after, shows just how crushed they were by the weight of (misplaced, imo) guilt and the impossible role they had to fulfill after Erwin died. i so wish we'd gotten to see more of them actually thriving as Scouts leader before shit hit the fan, during the 4 years long break -because seeing them so broken over a position they didn't want and still rocked as well as they could while having to handle Eren and this unknown world full of enemies just breaks my own heart.

i could elaborate more and in fact, i am currently elaborating about this in fic form over here 😁😁 *shamelessly self promotes*

some of my esme/olaf headcanons.

they started to become closer afer the night at the opera cause they both had lost something and both felt very angry.

they became each other's support after this but didn't really date for a long time.

they both understand that their attraction to each other is a product of anger but neither of them feel strong enough to get rid of it until a certain point.

they kiss only when they're so angry they don't feel anything else. in the moments like that esme even likes the kisses, olaf doesn't enjoy it anyway. esme feels anger more often than he and sometimes she really thinks she might enjoy spending time with olaf. she's scared she might have fallen in love with him a little too deeply.

they kissed calm and softly once but neither of them liked it.

i wanted to write smth else but i forgot what exactly while i was writing......

Earlier I made a post about Holloway being the Guardian to the Baudelaires so now I present to you:

Hatchetfield x ASOUE HCs and Ideas that haunt me

Duke was the one who convinced Holloway and Poe that she should be the Baudelaires guardian.

Duke also Absolutely hates Mr. Poe. Mr. Poe believes Duke to be a friend/good coworker.

The Baudelaires tried running away when they first got their because they needed to find the Quagmires and they wanted to Protect Miss Holloway

Miss Holloway immediately clocked Count Olaf and until Wilbur got involved was always 5 steps ahead

Duke Also immediately clocked Count Olaf, which surprised everyone except Holloway.

Violet became a Freshman at Hatchetfield High, befriending Hannah.

She also loved Tom Houston’s Shop Class, and went on to become his apprentice as he taught her the business side.

Hannah was really excited to have a friend at her school and ended up introducing her to Spitfire, Daniel, and Lex.

Lex and Violet bonded over going through so much trying to protect their siblings.

The Baudelaires fully believed Duke and Holloway were dating and did not realize they weren’t for the longest time.

Klaus ended up running into Pete at some point and befriended the Nerds, joining them for DND

Grace Chasity babysat Sunny once. It went so wrong. There was fire.

Sunny once almost ate the black book.

Sunny was once left in the Kitchen of Miss Retros and made something so good Miss Holloway added it to the menu. Duke gave her the title of “Non-Retro Retro’s Chef.”

Every time someone from VFD (including Olaf) stops by, they assume Miss Holloway is from VFD or has a connection to it.

Similarly, Miss Holloway often assumes that VFD members have connections to the Cult of the Starry Children.

The Baudelaires were once accused of being chemists, which confused them to no end.

Violet once socked Max in the jaw, breaking it.

I get where you're coming from here but like. This is a gag manga. Do you really think this is the most likely venue to provide a nuanced take on men with breasts?

I approach headcanons 99% from in-universe canon instead of probable author intention. For one, guessing author intention is normally difficult but this series is aimed at a particular audience in a different culture and goes through a lot of editorial control, so truly impossible to be certain about a lot of stuff.

Also if you decide that probable author intention matters then you cut yourself off from a ton of possibilities. For example, by your logic, trans Kaido HCs would be suspect because Kaido clearly fails at traditional masculinity in canon to make him more cringe/pathetic/weak as a character for humor reasons.

But why limit yourself like that? I see trans HCs in these situations to be a positive reframing of jokes or unintentional nuance, it's the transforming part of transformational work. A bit of reclaiming.

Though tbh the volleyball tits Nendo episode seemed pretty not transphobic IIRC, where most of the humor is in the sheer size of his "boobs" and how good he manages to be at sports despite them. And the bikini shirt was part of a running gag on Nendo's bizarre fashion tastes, and the other characters just comment that the shirt is weird, not that men shouldn't have tits.

Anyways I'm obviously not saying that Asou had transfem Nendo on the mind but with the "girly-girl" AU Nendo being real along with multiple instances of Nendo randomly choosing to have titty, anyone could validly extrapolate from canon that Nendo might not be fully cis. Which is what I meant by "not so farfetched" as a concept.

Hello! You're in luck, because I almost always have some of those. They're mostly silly little ones:

Quigley loved painting alongside his cartography. It started with just elevating his maps, but eventually it became its own hobby. I imagine he would enjoy immortalising those he loves through art

Quigley liked to watch the stars and would camp outside a lot (even just in the garden) to stargaze

(Depends on what time period you think ASOUE is set - i believe it was the 70s) very much is or would be a folk-rock fan. Loved guitar and accordion and singing. Loved to play his records and learn the songs just from playing them so much

I imagine he had an affinity for learning languages, since he was so worldly. Probably had many, many dictionaries for different languages in his room, alongside travel guides and 'the basics of the _ language' books

He had a commonplace book, but typically wrote all over his hands and arms when he wanted to remember something. He would add it to his commonplace book later

Would LOVE concerts and gigs - the energy, the people, the loud music, the dancing

Had very light feet and could sneak up on people easily - much to his parents delight, as they saw him as most likely out of the triplets to be a successful member of VFD

Loved herbal teas - the only thing that could help him sleep

Had an extremely untidy room, but worked better in the madness of it (P.S - Quigley means 'an untidy person')

Howdy anon! Thanks for the ask! I do indeed have some gender headcanons

The Henchperson of Indeterminable Gender - … this is self-explanatory, i fear

Isadora Quagmire (MTF) - also somewhat self-explanatory, but if you haven’t heard of this headcanon/theory I’ll explain: in the books the Quagmires are mentioned to be identical triplets. It’s impossible for triplets to be identical if one of them is the opposite sex of the other two (at least, i believe so? Im recounting this off the top of my head so cut me some slack). Thus, Isadora is likely a trans girl. It doesn’t make much sense if you watch the show because Isadora barely looks like her brothers, but in the official book artwork she just looks like her brothers with longer hair.

Quigley Quagmire (demiboy): This actually stems off of another headcanon I have for Quigley: bro is autistic (several studies show that autism and gender discomfort can be linked together). I think they struggle with their gender for at least a couple years. They only tell their siblings at first, unsure of what is happening to them and wondering if something is wrong. Isadora shows him a few resources involving gender and gender dysphoria and tells him that its okay to feel like this, acting as a guiding hand throughout his journey because she already transitioned. Duncan is a little confused, but he’s got the spirit!

Quigley begins by presenting a bit more femininely, stealing his sister’s clothes and his mother’s makeup and meshing it with his own stuff. The clothes throw them off a bit, but they find makeup to be really fun with Isadora’s help! He asks his siblings and the Baudelaires (because thEY ARE FAMILY TO HIM GOSH DARN IT) to refer to him with they/them pronouns for a bit.

It takes them a long time to settle into a way of presenting themself that feels right. But when they find it? He has never been happier! Probably into his late teens or early adulthood he officially identifies as a demiboy and uses he/they pronouns. And his family couldnt be prouder!

Sunny Baudelaire (any pronouns) - Sunny is young but I can already tell girl was made to rage against the label and binary machine. People can’t assume your gender if you’re off the spectrum entirely!
