My favorite thing about Steph and Cass’s relationship, and something that’s been kind of lost in canon and fandom, is that originally they were NOT uwu wholesome.
Cass was kind of an asshole who DESPERATELY wanted to protect Steph and would undermine her to do so (sometimes violently), and Steph was DESPERATE to be taken seriously as a vigilante and would sometimes get in over her head to do so.
That being said, they formed a connection with each other anyway, and that’s what makes them so special to me. In an era that was very much into “let’s have the two girls fight,” it was so amazing to see two girls who wanted to do GOOD and FOUGHT to do so coming together and becoming friends.

I understand that literature nerd Jason Todd is kind of overblown in fanon compared to it's actual presence in canon (a few issues during his pre (and post?)crisis Robin tenure that highlight it) BUT consider that I think it's hilarious if the unhinged gun toting criminal has strong opinions on poetry
#ramblings of a lunatic#dc comics#Jason Todd#batfamily#it's just a fun quirk! it's a fun lil detail and I simply cannot slight ppl for enjoying and incorporating it into works#like obviously jason isn't the only one. I'm a big believer in the batfam having over lapping interests they refuse to bond over#i know dick canonically used the robin hood stories (which are pretty flowery in their language far as i can tell) as inspo for Robin#and i know babs was a librarian and even tho her area of nerddom is characterized as more computery she probably knows quite a lot-#-about literature as well#duke is a hobbyist writer i believe? i saw a fan mention that- which if so is great and I hope he's also a nerd#(i mean he is canonically. i remember him being a puzzle nerd in his introduction. but i mean specifically a lit nerd)#damian called Shakespeare boring but also took acting classes so i think he's more of a theatre kid.#Tim's a dropout and i don't think he's ever shown distinct interest in english lit and i can't remember for Steph?#I'm ngl my brain hyperfocused on musician Steph i forget some of her other interests I'm sorry (minus softball and gymnastics!)#and then Cass had her whole (non linear but it's whatevs) arc about literacy and learning to read#went from struggling to read in batgirl 00 to memorizing Shakespeare in 'tec and is now an avid read in batgirls!#she's shown reading edgar allen poe but we don't know if it's his short stories or his poems#point to all of the above being: i know Jason's not the only lit nerd in the batfam#but also i do need him to be writing poetry in his spare time and reading and reviewing it#jason at the next dead robins society meeting: evening folks today I'll be assigning all of us poems based on laika the space dog#damian and steph who have been kidnapped and brought to jasons warehouse to hangout: LET US GO BITCH#speaking of^ random poem i think jason would like: space dog by alan shapiro#wake up one morning in an unfamiliar more mature body with a profound sense of abandonment. the last four lines. mmm tasty

do you have any recommendations of where to start with cassandra cains comics ? i think she's a super sick character but im not sure where to start
Yes I do actually (for once) so with cass you can start in one of two places you can either read batman no man's land which is where she first gets introduced or you can skip that and go straight onto the batgirl (2000) series which is where her character really starts getting explored and we start leaning more about her

I'm really not feeling the art in most of the current comic runs I'm reading rn... it's either pretty and aesthetically pleasing but nothing that's going to cause awe and make it stick with me for long or ugly/meh but in a boring and off-putting way.

Ship game; YJ core 4?
OH HELL YES. (Uh, ahem, I mean…SHIP IT!!!)
1. What made you ship it?
Okay well originally it probably spawned from a combo of reading the comics and this particular Te fic.
(Man…Te has been responsible for so much lol)
Anyway, I have been and will always be a fan of moresome-shipping the original group of anything. I love the concept of a group being bonded deeply by shared experiences in a way that kind of alienates them from other people but then strengthens their connection with each other.
Also, they’re all (okay they were) the youngest -fam characters with varying levels of inferiority complexes about that and I love that for them.
2. What are your favourite things about the ship?
(Outside of all the things I said in the first question…) Codependency! Two “the dead ones” and two “the surviving ones” who were VERY MESSED UP about being “the surviving ones.”
The opportunity for various types of coupling-off only to be like “you know what…let’s just go all-in and polycule this feelings monstrosity.”
(And the opportunity for everyone else to go “Wait you guys weren’t already?” OR “OH THANK GOD this is healthier.”)
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on this ship?
PROBABLY THAT I WISH SECRET WERE INVOLVED MORE.
I mean, I know in-canon (or at least canon-that-was?) she moved on and had a regular life or whatever…but I don’t like that! Put her back in the game GDI!!! (Also her powers were cool as hell and she is ORIGINAL-original!YJ.)
(Grab the ship game here and feel free to ask more questions!)

Jason and Cass this and that, the real body of work we need to see is Judge Barbara precariously balancing a trial that could result in the defendant being imposed a death penalty by the jury. This would allow the actual body of law to re-enter Batman-Universe oriented stories and open up a can of worms for Barbara and Cassandra's already complicated relationship.
Media outlets go insane. The case is nationally televised. Survivors are interviewed, the internet is in shreds over the eventual ruling and while Barbara can watch that madness unfold on her screens as Oracle, the real headache is that she is actually responsible for overseeing this trial and how it proceeds will not only be a reflection of her ability to handle the judiciary system (public life) but reflect on her time and experience as Batgirl/Oracle (vigilante life).
Someone like Bruce is a stickler for those self imposed rules but someone like Cassandra? An imposed death penalty would floor her, especially in a court room where Barbara held significant importance. To her, not doing absolutely everything you can to save someone's life is a failure, as good as a crime itself. I don't see Barbara messing with an impartial ruling over someone's life if she was actually a Judge. I think in her eyes, redirecting and changing the judiciary system from within is how she would want to play it and sometimes, that's accepting that some things are out of your control.

List of Bat Family Team-Ups and Crossovers from the Batman: Reborn Era
While to me the late 90s and early 00s produced the quintessential Bat Family, 2009-11 (plus Convergence) gives us a maturing and quickly evolving Bat Family; forced to reckon with the themselves and their pasts, to sustain a future. Crossovers had a very different tone to 10 years prior; all that shared history now boils to the surface, asking if these already complicated relationships, new and old, will stand the test of time. I also added links and bolded my favourites.
For newer readers: This is the period after Bruce Wayne's "death", which caused a reshuffling of monikers and Gotham to break into chaos. The extended Bat Family at this point includes Dick Grayson (Batman III), Damian Wayne (Robin V), Stephanie Brown (Batgirl IV), Barbara Gordon (Oracle), Helena Bertinelli (The Huntress), Dinah Lance* (Black Canary II), Tim Drake-Wayne (Red Robin), Cassandra Wayne (Black Bat), Selina Kyle (Catwoman), Kate Kane (Batwoman II), Renee Montoya (The Question II), Jason Todd* (Red Hood II) and Bruce Wayne (Batman I).

One of the reasons why I hate DC being so hyper-focused on the male Robins, is that it results on DC forcing them to constantly interact and have forced deep relationships with each other when some of them can have much better and deeper (non-romantic) relationships with some of the Batgirls imo.
Like as a Damian’s fan, the only genuinely interesting and enjoyable-to-read interactions he has with his brothers in canon are with Dick (even then, we haven’t seen much of it in recent years) yet DC continues to make stories where all 4 of them interact with each other and no shade, but the 2-5 issues of interactions he had with Stephanie and Cassandra in the 00′s where FAR more entertaining and interesting than the hundreds of canon interactions he had with either Jason or Tim.

What I went into ECCC expecting to buy:
- Whatever interesting back issue bundles I could find, mostly hoping for 90s era Superboy and Impulse and 2000 era Batgirl.
- Whatever trade paperbacks caught my interest, expecting mostly 90s and early 00s era DC trades
- Any figurines I felt like adding to my collection.
What I've walked out with after 2 days on the floor:
- A dozen indie graphic novels
- A birthday present for my younger brother
- These prints, which I bought signed directly from Todd Nauck and his wife and which make me quietly happy every time I look at them.
Tumblr media
I'm going to hang them up in my bedroom. 🥰
