James takes a deep breath, trying to focus on the way that his chest rises and falls instead of on the noise that’s infiltrating his brain. Bad idea. Because now James is hyper aware of the way that his uniform fits him in all the wrong ways. His clothes are two tight where the vest presses against his body and he can feel the itchy material through the button up he’s wearing -- of which the cuffs are too tight against his wrists -- and his robe is pulling on his shoulders and-

Fuck.

James tries to pay attention to what his friends are saying but their voices have gone muffled and his ears are ringing and-

James stands up, so abruptly that his fork falls off his plate with a horrid clatter that makes him cringe. He runs out of the Great Hall, ignoring the shouts of what is likely his friends -- he can’t tell, all of the noise around him isn’t processing right. He rushes to one of the hidden rooms behind a portrait that James and his friends tend to hide behind and once he’s inside of it, he allows his body to fall to the floor.

By the time that he’s sprawled out on the floor after what felt like hours of readjustment, the portrait is swinging open and James faintly registers that Regulus is the person that walks in.

His boyfriend walks over to him and crouches down by his head, a look of concern on his face, “Jamie? Are you okay?”

James shakes his head, unable to bring words from his throat, “Mm.”

“Can’t speak?” Once again, James shakes his head and Regulus nods, “Alright, can I touch you?” James shrugs, “Do you want me to try? I’ll just touch your cheek and if it’s too much, shake your head? Is that okay?” After a couple seconds, James determines that that’s alright. He knows Regulus. He knows that Regulus will immediately cut all contact if James wants him to… 

He nods, and seconds later, a cold hand is touching his cheek lightly. Regulus watches James’ face the entire time and they sit like that for a minute or two before James starts to lean into Regulus’ touch, “Is this alright?” Once again, James nods and he feels tears well up in his eyes because of his inability to actually talk. Instead of trying again and again to no avail, he reaches up as though asking for a hug. Regulus gently helps James sit up properly and pulls him into a hug. 

“You hesitated earlier.” Regulus observes, “Is everything touching you wrong?” At James nod, he nods back, “Do you want to go back to your dorm and change into some better clothes? And put in your earplugs?” James nods once again and Regulus allows James to lean on him as they slowly make their way up to the Gryffindor Tower. 

When they’re back up in the tower, Regulus is quick to help James out of his school clothes and into some more comfortable clothes. James lays down and takes the time to find a position that is comfortable for him while Regulus finds his earplugs. Eventually, Regulus is laying down with James and James can finally relax. He can finally breathe properly.

He’s finally safe.

And finally feeling the safety that his boyfriend and his bed provides him, James allows himself to fall asleep.

What he doesn’t know is that Remus came into the room only a couple minutes after he finally fell asleep, walking over to James’ bed and asking Regulus what had happened.

“Overstimulation is my best guess.” Regulus whispers, running his hand through James’ messy locks, “I have it taken care of. He’s alright now.”

I was pretty sad when i learned that both Zelda and Gorgug and Tracker and Kristen broke up, but i'm really glad Fig and Ayda are still together, i love their relationship so much

I think the main reason is because it felt so natural? Like, Tracker and Zelda were clearly introduced as love interests, and they're great, but Ayda wasn't supposed to be anyone's love interest- or even a major NPC. Her and Fig organically bonded and became friends, and then realized they liked each other, and their scenes together were so cute! They're both people that have felt like outcasts for different reasons (Fig being a tiefling, Ayda being autistic), and they understood each other and aaaaahhhh i love them

It really matters not, but one of the first things that strikes the king-to-be is the fact that despite you being a daughter of men you share in his stature. He is not used to looking men of any kind in the eye, rather being looked down on, and this is part of his distrust beyond his own people: the sheer air of condescension that arises. With you, though, you fit in, or blend in at least. He is unsure if Gandalf's recommendation carries weight solely by how shy and unsure you seem upon first meeting him. Struggling at first to actually look him in the eye, largely because you could barely pull your nose from your books! The wizard is insistent your knowledge is great and valuable, and you certainly show more promise than the burglar. The others take to you fairly quickly, especially the brothers Ri. The company’s youngest loves your books, too, it seems.

It stirs something in Thorin how protective the others are of you, the way you’re defended from every match of playful insults and pulled out of danger again and again. He wants to be annoyed, frustrated at the addition of two inexperienced adventurers, but when you share your enthusiasm to see his beautiful kingdom, all the legends you have heard, it simply fizzles out. Soon, the only annoyance he finds himself feeling is at the sight of the others’ hands about your waist even if they are saving you.

He notices the way you don’t tend to express things outwardly and frankly he understands. It only further fuels the shock crossing his face and mind when you snap one day, releasing anger he hadn’t even realized you held beneath your calm exterior. The others had been teasing you too hard and had even taken something of yours, and Thorin instantly barks at them to stop and give it back when he sees. You apologize for causing so much trouble and Thorin just gives a deep chuckle, shaking his head. “How is that your fault? They thought antagonizing someone they found soft was funny? It is no joke at all. That lot could learn a thing or two about order- something I think you and I understand well.” Sentimental or not, even if the object is simply a beloved fidget, the king surprises you with his understanding. Reaching into the large folds of his coat, Thorin pulls out a key. You have seen this key once before back in Bilbo’s home, but now he lets you see it up close. “I find myself toying with this in idleness. The feel of it beneath my fingers… something of it is reassuring. I understand you.” Something about those words break down your smile, bringing you to wrap your arms around the king, who breaks into an uncharacteristically shy smile. “Understanding is not something we often come by, is it? And yet here I think our hearts can rest.” He feels your nod of agreement once your head rests upon his shoulder.

At high levels, Jikko makes you a master of dramatics, capable of telling when others are lying with ease. High levels also make you an insufferable drama queen, making a mess out of anyone and everything just to keep the spotlight on you for that much longer, deny it all you want, but fame feels good. At low levels you'll have trouble picking out the most obvious lies apart, you cry when people tell particularly nasty yo mama jokes.

"Dungeon Meshi is a manga about autism that just so happens to also have monsters and cooking.

On a surface level, Marcille seems like the most 'normal' one in the main group, she's often playing the straight man role in jokes and objects to their crazier plans. But its all just masking yall. She is a very introspective and anxious person, she spends a lot of time silently worrying about things like mortality and social rules. So whenever she's freaking out about people cooking monsters, she doesn't actually have any personal objections to it, she's just watching people break the rules she has fixated on and is unsure what to do about it. Likewise, she fell in love with her girlfriend after watching her openly being a weirdo who scampers around in the wilderness to look for cool bugs.

And yet, for all of her worrying about fitting in, she never quite manages it. At the wizard school she was seen as a weirdo half-elf who does unusual experiments and gets too excited. Over the course of the manga, she travels in an adventuring party with a few other openly autistic people (and a chronically divorced hobbit), and she slowly opens up to them over time and becomes more okay with the idea of coming across as weird.

A Practical Guide to Evil

So I've sat with it for most of the day, and while I think I'll be ruminating on it for much longer than that, here are my thoughts.

Obviously, spoilers.

First, Akua Sahelian. Even going in knowing that she was going to get a redemption arc, I was thinking that maybe I misremembered the name, that it was another character that was going to be redeemed. Especially after the demon at Marchford and of course the Doom of Liesse. I will admit to literally squealing when Catherine broke her fucking bones after 1st Liesse. As the story went on, I began to forgive and forget, and to be honest by the middle of Vol. 7 I was like get over it and kiss her, Cat. I guess I just never felt that bad about the Doom after the Everdark, despite the narrative's insistence on reminding me of it. Maybe that's good writing, that I liked Akua so much, maybe not, idk I'm just a little guy.

Hakram was a great character, with a perfect pivot from in Cat's shadow to becoming a man of his own. He was the button that EE could press to ignore all of the logistical issues when the army got big, so that was kind of annoying, but whatever.

Indrani. Around the time that she and Cat finally fucked I was screaming in my head for them to fuck, so that feels right. Really liked her characterization towards the end with the other Refuge refugees, especially the line where Concocter tells her it didn't have to always be a fight. Good shit.

Vivienne was hit or miss for me, she was her own character, but never really felt that important to me, despite obvious narrative importance. Never the same level of emotional connection to me.

Masego, my darling beloved. My sweet perfect boy. My autistic wizard son. I love him. There may be flaws in his character, maybe, but I will never see them. He is the platonic ideal of a wizard to me.

And then Catherine. She went though so many forms of anime magic. Guide truly cemented itself as a shonen to me, just by virtue of never quite knowing what she could actually do. Her characterizations were relatively constant, enough to ground her as a character anyway, but the way that she always had a hidden plan did get a little annoying. It wasn't quite Sherlock Holmes level unrevealed scheming, but there were definitely moments where I groaned out of annoyance, namely when she was take prisoner in Wolof. I'm probably overstating how much wasn't foreshadowed, and I'd guess that for a lot of people the excitement of guessing "how would Cat get out of this one" was fun, but by the end I was rolling my eyes half the time.

Overall I loved it, and I'm definitely going to reread it at some point. It will provide inspiration for my dnd campaign for years to come, and I will be shamelessly stealing characters forever. Kairos Theodosian was incredible, and probably my second favorite character.

My single biggest critique was that there were stretches of like 5 or 6 interludes in a row, which inevitably lead to me saying "Cordelia FUCKING Hasenbach" under my breath

Um. Blinks at you. Points at you. Ssdbghsbfkbsbhbs at first I didn't ship it at all bc I was so very into Oakworthy and whatever Scary/Erica/Margarita have going on in my brain, respectively, but your insistence paid off and also multishipping is beautiful forever <333 And then this all happened to coincide with certain events in canon and I was like. Okay yeah. Yeah I get it now.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Speaking of canon events! I really, really, really like how these two have grown to foil and parallel each other in SO many interesting ways. Which personally adds more fuel to the shipping fire for me! Very two-sides-of-the-same-coin meets opposites-attract imo. Like I said with Cheerkicks, they both have a lot more in common than I think they're really aware of, if that makes sense!

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I don't think so! I just think they should kiss. I also really enjoy them as being part of a polywagon situation or as Marloakworthy <333

This feels like too easy of an answer, but Sophomore Year! I remember scrolling through Fantasy High fics on ao3 after finishing Freshman Year and being like ??? Oh there's someone related to Aguefort??? And they're popularly shipped with Fig, of all people??? Huh. Guess it must be a SY thing. Smash cut to me giggling and kicking my feet upon getting introduced to Ayda and being absolutely overjoyed bc the only thing I could think about was "oh this ship is going to be so cute isn't it I'm going to be feeling like this abt them constantly???" And I was right!!!

What are your favorite things about the ship?

Truly just the. Unlikeliness of it all. Cloistered wizard pirate harpy lady falling hard for the rock n roll wild child tiefling bard with a heart of gold,,, and then said bard being such a bisexual mess about her own feelings in response. The panicked "I kiss her and then I skateboard away!!!" lives Rent Fucking Free in my brain at all times. Also Emily and Brennan portray their relationship so beautifully??? Like truly they had me tearing up at multiple points. I think Fig and Ayda both work very hard to understand each other and communicate properly and that earnest aspect of it combined with all the giddy fluffy high school romance stuff is like kryptonite to me. Congrats you two that's almost the best anyone has ever done it!!!

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Honestly??? I don't think I've poked around in the d20/Fantasy High fandoms enough to know what is and isn't a popular opinion about them. So I'm gonna echo what I said for Normscary: I just want them to kiss!!! And cuddle. And be cute. Forever <333

AAAAAH okay i'm gonna go slightly out of order to introduce whoever is reading this to my personal brain blorbos. Fair warning all of these are TTRPG characters, mostly my NPCs save for the first two!

A. Why are you excited about this character?

Fanny Paine - ohhhh my beloved Trigun cowgirl OC. I'm so excited to see how her backstory kicks her in the ass (and by backstory, I DO mean her childhood best friend-turned-EOM member Nova).

Sylvie - my tiefling phantom rogue!! She was a joy to play and an absolute bullet in combat. Lethal and impossible to hit. She also was part of the conflict, being a double agent for the big bad's Vecna cult. I spent so much time texting the DM in secret during our sessions as if the BBEG and Sylvie were sending letters back and forth, telling him our whereabouts, before he'd drop in some cult mooks and we'd knock 'em dead. So fun.

Brie - Shadow Sorcerer and Secret goddess of fire! She's from my first campaign but still relevant because I have two groups playing in that world. In one group we have a ranger who denounced his cult to the fire god, so it'll be really fun to reveal that his god is actually the half-elf barmaid they keep seeing in every tavern, and she's way more chill than he thought.

Iris and Humboldt - ah yes. My older (late 50s) human wizard/leader of the largest adventuring guild in my dnd world and her autistic gnome husband who.... looks like Jack Black in Jumanji and accidentally brought on the apocalypse in our first campaign. They're my light academia escapism blorbos now and all they do is sit around and study magic in the coolest city in my world.

Ron - New NPC the party adopted, and he's an amnesiac, kinda undead paladin with spore druid flavoring. The party recently discovered he's.... well, he's Oberon. Not sure how he got here, but the Warlock's patron is Titania. Of the summer court. Yeah, that one. One of the party's quests right now is to retrieve Ron's memories and return him to Titania, and maybe the warlock will get *her* husband back from the Feywild. However, some mysterious figures want Ron dead....

Oh fuck I could also talk about Keats, Tarovir, Vaemyx... AAH too many. But I'm gonna stick to these big ones, plus Tarovir and Vaemyx have massive spoilers for my players D:

H. What trait do you admire most?

Fanny - girl's got gut. She really is "shoot first, ask questions later."

Sylvie - Resilience? She almost died, admitted she had been a spy, and almost got killed by the party all in one day. And then her best friend, the only one who trusted her, died. Thank god she ended up happy.

Brie - she loves her friends and loves to have fun. She's chaotic good in the funniest ways. When I play her I just get to be stupid.

Iris and Humboldt - THEY LOVE EACH OTHER. SO MUCH. SAVED EACH OTHER BACK TO BACK WHEN THE ALMOST DOOMED THE WORLD. Seriously, I rolled Iris' portent rolls and got an 18 and a 20 the day they summoned the BBEG. If it wasn't for that, Humboldt would have failed his death saves.

Ron - man look, he's just taking it day by day. He's very tired. But at least he has a lot of patience.

13. What color do they think they look best in? Do they actually look best in that color?

Fanny - she wears mostly browns but has a blue undershirt. She looks best in blue!

Sylvie - blue and silver coded. Looks best in black and dark blues.

Brie - wears cream and blues, would look great in green!

Iris and Humboldt - blues/silvers and browns respectively

Ron - this man is covered in dirt. Like he deserves.

28. Would they prefer a lie over an unpleasant truth?

No - Fanny, Brie, Humboldt, Ron (he can't lie, doesn't like lies - he's Fey after all)

31. Who are they the most glad to have met?

Fanny - Charlie, her new friend who is an EOM reject. Fanny is a very protective momma bird.

Sylvie - her best friend, the elven druid Eldrid.... who died. It was really fucking sad, I miss that PC. They were in so many cahoots together.
