How would the housewardens act towards you if you were mute?

Kalim Al-Asim

For Kalim, the fact that you're mute doesn't change how much he enjoys being with you.

If there's anyone who's never had any prejudices about how people communicate, it's him.

From the very beginning, he treats you with the same warmth and enthusiasm as anyone else.

His reaction to learning that you can't speak is more curiosity than concern.

"That's amazing! So how do you communicate? Do you have a special method? Teach me, I want to learn!"

He's not immediately good at sign language because he's a bit slow with memory :( but that doesn't stop him from trying his best.

If you use another method, like writing or using expressions, Kalim adapts quickly because he's already someone who is very guided by emotions and gestures.

Something he loves about you is that, even though you don't speak, you express so much with your eyes and your smile. He finds it beautiful how your face conveys so much without words.

When he's really excited, he forgets that you can't answer him right away and talks nonstop, but as soon as he notices you need a moment to type or respond with signs, he waits patiently with a big smile.

"Oh, sorry! I got too excited again, didn't I? Hehe, it's okay! Take your time, I want to know what you think."

Because he's so expressive, it's easy for you to understand him without him having to say much.

Sometimes just by looking at him, you know exactly what he's feeling, and that makes him even more attached to you.

If someone makes an insensitive comment about your muteness, Kalim flies into a rage. He's not the type to get angry easily, but if someone disrespects you, you can see the serious glint in his eyes as he says,

"Don't ever talk like that again."

Overall, Kalim is the type of person who loves and understands beyond words, and being with you is proof of that.

Idia Shroud

When Idia finds out you're mute, his first thought is like

“Great! I don't have to worry about talking out loud all the time-”

It's not that it bothers him when people talk, but he's someone who hates forced social interactions and finds it stressful to have to respond constantly.

However, when he starts getting closer to you, he realizes something important: it's not that you don't talk, it's that you have a different way of communicating. And that intrigues him more than he thought.

If you use sign language, Idia feels clumsy trying to learn it.

His fingers are fast for games, but when he tries to sign, it feels like he's casting a weird spell with his fingers.

“Ugh, this is harder than learning to program in five different languages…”

But if you use a device to type or communicate in other ways, he feels much more comfortable.

He programs a personalized app that helps you type responses faster, or even a voice synthesizer if you ever need it.

At first, he gets nervous trying to interpret your expressions, but after spending so much time with you, he begins to understand you with just a glance.

"Hey, hey, … in this new game, there's a character who communicates without speaking, just like you! Want to see it? I'm sure you'll love it."

If someone ever makes a hurtful comment about your muteness, Idia first goes pale with fright, then red with fury, and then hacks their devices to play a cruel prank on them

No one messes with his special someone and gets away with it :>

He may not say it out loud, but Idia truly loves how you communicate without words. After all, the best connections don't always require sound.

Vil Schoenheit

Vil has always believed that elegance isn't just about appearance, but also about the way a person communicates and expresses themselves.

When he meets you and discovers you're mute, his first impression is fascination.

“How interesting… You speak without words. It's a unique and beautiful form of expression.”

If you use sign language, Vil learns it without difficulty. He has an excellent memory and is a perfectionist, so he masters it quickly.

If you communicate in other ways, such as with expressions or writing, he watches closely. He becomes adept at interpreting your emotions with just a glance.

He loves the way you convey so much with so little. Sometimes, when others are filling the air with unnecessary words, he looks at you and feels that the connection you have is purer and more genuine than any empty conversation.

When you're in public with him, he doesn't let anyone make you feel inferior for not speaking up.

If someone tries to belittle you, a single glance from him is enough to make them immediately shut up.

“You don't need words to prove your worth. Your presence speaks volumes.”

Malleus Draconia

For Malleus, the fact that you are mute is neither strange nor worrisome.

He himself has spent centuries surrounded by awkward silences and conversations filled with empty formalities.

In comparison, your presence is refreshing.

From the beginning, he takes a genuine interest in how you communicate.

If you use sign language, he learns quickly, and whether you prefer to write or use gestures, he adapts seamlessly.

He isn't someone who needs words to understand you. Over time, he develops a special sensitivity to your body language, to the point where he sometimes asks you something and, before you answer, he already knows the answer just by looking at you.

"You don't need to explain anything. I can see the answer in your eyes."

He loves the reassurance you bring. In a world where people always fear him or treat him with extreme formality, the fact that you can communicate without words gives him a special kind of intimacy he's never experienced before.

When you go for a walk together at night, the silence between you isn't awkward.

Sometimes he simply sits beside you and enjoys the feeling of company without needing to speak.

If anyone dares to belittle you or mock your muteness, his dark presence becomes crushing. Suddenly lightning illuminates the sky man, and his gaze turns icy.

"You dare disrespect someone so precious to me? How insolent."

He's a prince, but to you, he's just Malleus, someone who understands you beyond words.

You, [full name], are the child of Tony Stark— the Tony Stark. Not biologically in any way, but treated like one nevertheless.

A blessing it might be to remember whenever you’re around your adoptive father and everyone close to him, it’s also a curse the media loves to remind you every chance they get. They are extremely selective about when they consider you a Stark — and it all depends on the narrative they want to push. Effectively, you’re only a Stark in their eyes whenever you do something they deem unbecoming of the name.

Your father Tony does his best to shield you from all the negative attention that comes with being his child. His efforts go beyond suing reporters and paparazzi to oblivion — and assigning shadow bodyguards to keep you safe. He gives you the freedom to live normally as well, which includes bestowing you another name that flies under the radar. [First name] Carbonell.

[First name] Carbonell who just decided to participate in their university’s hack-a-thon on a whim. Who didn’t even tell their dad where they disappeared to on a weekend. And who just got called onto the makeshift stage.

"Congratulations," your old Assembly Language Programming professor greets you as you shake his hand and accept the 3D-printed trophy he’s offering you.

So much for only attending for the free merch.

(You came for the workshops, too, of course. But it was never in your plan to code something, especially with a clock set so tight, let alone submit something for judging. It just kind of . . . happened.)

You give a small, polite smile. "Thank you."

Once more, the crowd roars with applause. However, this time, it’s accompanied by a familiar celebratory whistle. Dad.

You locate him just before the shutter clicks. Your winning photo immortalizes your genuine reaction to spotting your dad in the crowd.

You run to him immediately after descending from the makeshift stage. He catches you in an embrace. "Congratulations, [nickname]." You melt into the hug as he plants a kiss on top of your head. "I’m proud of you."

Truth be told, you never imagined that you two would reach this point. You were convinced that you were meant to die in fourth grade, when HYDRA kidnapped you as petty revenge to your SHIELD agent biological parents. It was only by pure luck that the Avengers found you when they did — especially when they weren’t even looking for you in the first place. Although it wasn’t Iron Man who found you first, you clung to Tony since then because he reminded you of your biological father the most.

Tony, for his part, as he later admitted to you during your junior year of high school, had been hesitant to take you in himself. He cared for you a lot, to the point that he had been convinced you deserved a better guardian than he could ever be. Yet, at the same time, the thought of never seeing you again was too much to bear.

The two of you had to figure things out along the way. And you’d like to think you have done well in doing your respective best.

"Thanks, Dad." You tighten your hold on him, unwilling to let go just yet. "Means a lot."

Later, when your dad had enough photos of you with your trophy in his phone, he takes you to a hamburger joint. He had denied your request to have donuts for lunch, but he did promise to get a couple dozen for dessert.

"How did you know I was on campus?" You ask as you unwrap more of your burger.

Your dad, who hasn’t peeled off his photostatic veil and stripped off his disguise, nonchalantly relies, "JARVIS tattled on you."

You stop mid-bite because of that. "Dad! You said you removed that protocol!"

"I did." His burger suddenly appears the most interesting thing to look at. "I just asked JARVIS where you were because I wanted to have lunch."

Your eyes soften. University has been . . . a lot. You haven’t been able to join your dad for meals, much less hang around his workshop like you always did when you were younger.

You thought nothing it, really. Partly because you’ve been too busy to think about it, but mostly because you assumed he wouldn’t care. After all, you still live with him — and you two see each other in the hallways every-so-often at midnight.

It never occurred to you that your dad will miss you, even when he still has everything keeping him occupied. "I miss you, too, you know."

Some advice to protect and support your brain

1. Wear a helmet. Please.

2. I know this must feel exhausting to see repeated if it's something you struggle with, but exercise really does help, in any capacity you can do it. Go for a walk, do a light routine, anything you can. Ask your doctor, look on the internet, if you can figure out a way to do something that works for you and doesn't feel like the nastiest chore in the world I encourage you to try it, at any frequency you can afford.

3. If you get a concussion, even a light one, go to the hospital. If the hospital doesn't orient you towards a neuropsychologist for an evaluation, insist on seeing one, and if they still fail at their job, go see a neuropsychologist in private. (Again, I know this sucks because it's expensive and not affordable for everyone depending on where you live and I'm sorry, this is the best I can give.) Same thing if you got hit in the head, didn't feel like it had consequences at the time, but have since been experiencing struggles with remembering stuff, impulsivity, etc. In general if you've experienced cognitive changes I encourage you to see a neuropsychologist but if you remember getting hit in the head, do mention it to them. Also, do monitor yourself for potential epilepsy, check what the signs are (they can be much less visible than you think), if you think there's a risk make a card to let people know what to do. If you think there's a risk you might have developed epilepsy after the hit, go back to the hospital, and while explaining your concerns mention that you got hit in the head.

4. Do stuff. Look, there are so many experiments and studies about how juggling helps the brain, or music, or knitting, or writing, or learning a language, or gardening, or. So of course I could just tell you to do all of that with a list of studies and be done with it, but it would be pointless. A lot of cognitive remediation programs based on these studies fail because what happened is a therapist who liked piano saw a study on the benefits of playing the piano and shoved all their patients into a piano therapy group. People, whether they're patients with brain damage or you, random tumblr user, have tastes and you do not have to force yourself to learn a new language or whatever pop psych instagram account tells you is the newest brain-hack. It's much more simple than that: your brain grows when you use it, and that creates extra padding that protects you in the case of trauma, injury, but also the effects of aging and the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. (Well, it's not literal padding, the term is "cognitive reserve", but I think the metaphor is pretty accurate.) So try out shit: board games, reading (audiobooks are also a really cool and undervalued invention like this shit is wonderful), learning a new language (comics or watching stuff in the language helps make that fun), juggling, memorising the dsm-5 criteria for every type of disorder, get into comics, learn an instrument, get into baking, explode your microwave in the process of making raw cookie dough, try being around animals (horseback ballad at a ranch go to a cat cafe etc), learn how to dance from YouTube tutorials... Do whatever you want, figure out what's fun, try to avoid ideas of shame at not being immediately good or the idea that it's childish (it's not immature to have fun, i promise.) And give yourself permission to give up. This isn't an assignment, you don't have to push yourself, explore yourself with the energy of a fourteen years old figuring out how they want to dress: what matters is you find a bunch of stuff you find fun.

5. Socialization is really good for you, both for your cognitive functions but also in general for your mood, resources etc (and also all of those are linked). Whether it's a rpg group, an association you're at, even like people on a discord server, meeting friends on zoom, being a regular at quiz night at the club, trying to connect to people in any way you can really helps. I know it's hard, especially for people who struggle with stuff like autism, anxiety, etc. but building connection with other people, in whatever way works for you, really helps improve your quality of life.

6. Again, I may sound a bit like the doctor you want to punch in the face, but a diet full of all the vitamins and protein and general nutrients you need really helps. And honestly whatever way works for you getting these nutrients helps. I often get b-12 deficient because I struggle with the texture of most meats, so I try to eat eggs and sometimes as a kid my mom would put my steak in a blender and my doctor sometimes prescribes me b-12 supplements so I don't faint: that's what a healthy diet looks like for me. And I know exactly what b-12 deficiency does to the brain, so I use those strategies to incorporate it in my diet because I like the memory issues about as much as I like light-headedness and fatigue. (This also works for diets like veganism or gluten free or literally anything. A healthy diet isn't one where you have to eat every food, it's one where you get the nutrients you and your brain needs, and if that involves taking supplements then that's what's healthy for you.) Eating carrots in carrot cake or zucchini in brownie (getting creative with it) or eating premade soup because you want to eat vegetables but don't have the time or struggle with the texture or really hate vegetables and need them to be in a cake where you don't really taste them- that's what a healthy diet looks like. There's a lot of strategies about eating around sensory issues or restrictions and I'm not an expert but like, the ressources are out there. Keeping hydrated is also really important! Similarly, for people who struggle with water, flavouring packets and teas really help!

7. Sleep is so important. Like, to the point it makes diagnosis harder because lack of sleep fucks up everything from mood to cognitive functions to development so if your patient isn't sleeping, good luck figuring out what they have. So talking to your doctor if you have trouble sleeping, working on designing a bedtime routine that helps you, working to reduce nightmares with your therapist, all of that is super important... And don't underestimate the usefulness of napping! Napping rules.

Now, you may have notice that everything in this list (except maybe the helmet one, though these things do cost money) is easier if you have money. I manage some of the items on that list, but don't assume that I am preaching: more often than not, my diet is the cheapest ramen noodles I can find, and I sleep 4 to 5 hours a night.

That's because neuropsychology, like any form of psychology, is inherently political. It's better wages and union rights to have the time and money to afford eating the diet you need and spending time and money on activities and group outings etc. It's equality in the household so you don't have to spend all the time you do have on taking care of all the chores and kids and never getting to enjoy anything or rest. It's, of course, universal healthcare so you can go to the hospital after you get hit in the head and get those scans and EEG go see that neuropsychologist and meet that therapist and get your doctor to prescribe you medicine that works rather than the medicine your dumbfuck insurance company thinks you should fail. It's good food regulations so that you designing a healthy diet can be about getting the nutrients you need and not avoiding getting poisoned by the food you spent your damn money on. It's all of that and more; it's defending your rights, and fighting for those you don't have. So this is all the advice I have, do your best to be kind to yourself, and I hope you have a wonderful year.

Okay, I'm not generally one for dogwhistle-based thinking, but why is your favorite rap song by "a Dutch drum and bass group" called "Black Sun Empire"? On further Googling the official explanation is that it is a Star Wars reference, but this seems dubious to me at best

Dawn of a Dark Day feat. UK hip hop group Foreign Beggars is an excellent example of something that's quite rare: cyberpunk rap that's actually good.

I'm going to assume that you're not a long-term reader, or it would be obvious why someone who posted fake discourse about parents cryogenically freezing their children would like this song.

Probably the best cyberpunk/post-cyberpunk anime is 2002's Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex. Some songs from that series have rap segments, but they don't really add to the music, such as with Origa feat. Heartsdales - Player.

Origa sounds amazing, but everyone who has ever heard one of the tracks featuring her already knows that.

The problem for Heartsdales is that it's usually much easier for a man to pose as tough and intimidating than it is for a woman, and even then, proper intimidation is subtle and depends on a connection to a background of power, or the ability to convincingly fake that connection.

What makes Dawn of a Dark Day so unique is that it's clearly from the perspective of a team of cyborg combat operatives, or following them very closely. It's also abstract enough that it doesn't fall into Ren Faire/Steampunk dorkiness. That's a fine line to tread, and it takes actual talent.

In real life, we don't sing songs about computer hacking, even though computer hacking is one of the most sci-fi elements of the current era.

Imagine a song about a combat cyborg team in the style of a whaling song, talking about cleaning ports and hacking mainframes. This would be much more understandable to contemporary outsider audiences than a line like, "cyberbrain circus - brace for the kickback."

In the cyberpunk world, the cyborg combat team would talk using the actual professional jargon from their field, which would be more specific to their time and place. For example, contemporary computer programmers would complain about Java, a specific programming language, about which they would have specific complaints (such as preferring dynamic typing, or Java being too verbose).

Thus, a whaling-style song, "dust the ports and hack the servers," which doesn't require knowing the specifics, would be something either written from an outsider's perspective, probably as a joke, or written from an insider's perspective, also probably as a joke.

To hit the right band, then, requires writing something from the perspective of an insider (even though insiders would not tend to write songs), that's intelligible to people from our world with some background knowledge of genre, that hits on the sci-fi elements related to the genre (rather than just being a generic love song), without making them overpowering, by baking them into the assumptions of the text.

To use a non-musical example, the original special collector's edition Mass Effect hoodie (left) is subtle and was popular for a while, while some subsequent designs by third parties (right) were much louder.

The design on the left is appropriate for a wide variety of social environments, while the design on the right would require a higher degree of social aptitude to get away with wearing wear in many social environments, and would be more suitable for a video game club or anime convention.

This is part of the general thing where being "cool" is about making things look effortless, and not looking like a tryhard.

Particularly, for the hoodie on the right, there's a mismatch between style and substance, in which it is trying to "borrow" power from a fictional suit of armor from a video game. (This mismatch is the general reason that trying to lean too hard on fiction is cringe; there's not enough substance relative to what someone is trying to do with it.)

Some of you may remember an Indiegogo campaign for a samurai armor hoodie. I'm not saying that everything should be understated. Sometimes, artistically, you're better off committing to the bit.

Now, back to music.

The band Gunship are not a rap outfit, but seem to have been quite successful with a lot of their sci-fi-themed content, such as this video with 3.9 million views:

They do a good job at finding the balance.

Another musical act, Perturbator, got 5.4 million views with a music video about rogue sentient androids (Perturbator - Sentient, which contains nudity).

The successor series for Standalone Complex, SAC_2045, has the song Millennium Parade - Fly With Me, which is better as rap music than the rap segment of Origa - Player, but isn't cyberpunk-themed directly.

Cyberpunk 2077 has, for example, Konrad OldMoney feat. Taelor Yung - Day of Dead, which is great for an action scene, but also isn't directly cyberpunk:

No Save Point, also from 2077, has a great line, "When a fortune cookie tells me I'm fucked, I just shrug," and ain't that Night City for you? They put some work in on this one, but I don't vibe with it as much musically.

Anyhow, that's why Dawn of a Dark Day is my favorite.

Respect or Privacy (1)

Tucker is excited for everything about college, even having a roommate for the first time. At least, he is until his roommate Danny turns out to be standoffish and a little bit of a dick. Whatever. It's a disappointment, but he'll survive. The same might not be said of Danny.

This is my first fic for Phic Phight 2024. The prompts I used were:

College AU where the characters don't meet until college and Danny has to hide his halfa status from his dorm roommate (your choice which character that is) [from @shadowfaerieammy], and Tucker fucked up. Hard. But it’s like, how the hell was he supposed to know that hacking the federal government was a bad idea? [from @lexosaurus]

Chapter 1: Fuck Around (Chapter 2)

[No warnings apply]

Tucker was excited for college. After the nightmare that was high school (his dad's "just be confident and people will like you and treat you well" advice had been complete garbage), he was looking forward to a school experience where everyone had actually signed up for and more-or-less wanted to be there. He was looking forward to studying programming and information technology, and spending six hours a day on average hanging out with people who were just as interested in those subjects as he was.

Then, obviously, there were the college girls—big bonus to this whole experience. Lastly, he was looking forward to the dorm experience. He'd always been kind of lonely growing up. He was an only child, and he'd never had any close friends. Honestly, he'd been closer with his bullies than he had been to the other guys in the A/V club his mom had convinced him to join which was... embarrassing.

But all freshman were required to live on campus, and he'd signed up for a double room, meaning that he would have a roommate who would have no choice but to spend time with him, and as a result, they would have to get used to each other, and learn to live with each other, and inevitably become best friends—at least until the end of freshman year.

When Tucker reached his new dorm, room 416, he could hear grumbling and shuffling on the other side of the door. His roommate must already be here. He grinned as he opened the door.

"Hey, roomie!" Tucker greeted cheerfully.

His roommate jumped at the sound, and slammed a dresser drawer closed on his finger. "Fuck!" he yelped, and turned around with a wide-eyed look on his face like he'd just been caught doing something illegal.

"Uh... sorry," Tucker said. "Didn't mean to spook ya."

"Heh, you didn't... I mean you surprised me, but I wasn't like... scared...." He cleared his throat and gave Tucker an awkward forced smile. "I'm Danny."

"Tucker Foley." Tucker tossed his duffel bag onto the empty bed and gently placed his box of tech on the desk next to it. "Looked like you were struggling with that drawer, whatcha got in there?"

Danny's smile fell. "Look, I don't wanna sour our relationship right out of the gate, but that's really none of your business. I would appreciate it if you kept your nose out of my stuff."

"Uh... okay, sure," Tucker agreed. "Wasn't trying to be nosy or anything, anyway. Sorry."

"Good," Danny said, the tension in his body language easing slightly. "As long as you respect my privacy, I think we'll get along fine."

Tucker smiled, but he felt his heart sink. 'Respect my privacy' sounded a lot like it meant 'leave me alone', and 'leave me alone' was pretty much the same as 'I don't want to be your friend', which sounded a lot like all Tucker's hopes for dorm life flushing down the toilet.

"So where're you from, Danny?" Tucker asked. "Or is that information too personal."

Danny paused before answering, like he was genuinely trying to decide if it was too personal or not.

"Illinois," he said finally. "You?"

"Illinois, also. What town?" Tucker asked. "Man, wouldn't it be wild if we grew up in the same place and never met before? I'm from Elmerton."

"Elmerton? Ew," Danny said with a laugh. "I'm an Amity Parker. I'd rather die than live in Elmerton. Elmerton sucks."

"Hey! It may be kinda boring, I'll give you that much, but it's still better than haunted-ass Amity Park!" Tucker argued, thankful it seemed like things were starting to lighten up a bit between him and his new roommate. "At least I didn't grow up surrounded by a bunch of evil ghosts taking revenge on the living."

Tucker was laughing, but just like that, Danny's demeanor got cold and closed off again. Shit. Tucker let his laughter awkwardly trail off, wondering what he'd said wrong. Man, making friends was even harder than he thought.

"Is that all your stuff?" Danny asked. "Just the one bag and a cardboard box?"

"Oh! No! I still have some things to bring up; I left them with the dorm supervisor. I better go get 'em."

"Yeah, you probably should," Danny agreed. "I wouldn't put that much trust in the dorm supervisor, he seemed kinda shady."

"Er... right."

Tucker went down to grab the last of his stuff, and by the time he reentered the dorm room, Danny was gone.

He sighed. "Great first impression, Tuck. Well done."

Danny must've arrive much earlier in the day than Tucker had, because most of his stuff was already unpacked. His bed was made and everything. As Tucker's eyes wandered over Danny's side of the room, they were drawn to the bottom drawer of his dresser, the one he'd accidentally slammed his finger in, trying to make sure Tucker didn't see what was in it.

"I shouldn't," he said out loud. "Danny literally asked for one thing—that I respect his privacy."

Poking around now would be completely stupid. It would ruin my chances of ever being friends with him. Tucker reminded himself internally.

Still, he couldn't tear his eyes away from that drawer.

And he doubted Danny would be back any time soon. It wouldn't be dark for a few more hours at least, and Danny was clearly avoiding him.

Against his better judgement, Tucker knelt down on the floor and opened the dresser drawer, expecting to see sex toys, or lingerie, or something similarly embarrassing. Instead, he found strange, futuristic looking weapons and technology. It looked like alien shit. Was Danny secretly an alien? No, that was stupid.... Right?

Tucker slowly pushed the drawer closed again, questioning everything he knew about the universe.

He would have preferred sex toys.

No, they had to be earthly technology, because Tucker distinctly remembered seeing a logo emblazoned on everything that said 'Fenton Works'. All he had to do was look that up online and put his mind at ease. Danny seemed like a... fairly reasonably guy. There had to be a good explanation for him having a cache of high tech weapons in a college dorm. Although, to be honest, it wasn't looking too good at the moment.

Tucker unpacked his box of tech, set up his desktop PC set up and plugged in his laptop and PDA to charge. Then, he looked up Fenton Works, which brought him to an absolutely hideous orange and teal website for what seemed to be a small family business in Amity Park that specialized in ghost hunting and developing ghost hunting technology.

A sigh of relief escaped him.

Danny definitely wasn't an alien. He was just another paranoid Amity Parker, worried about ghosts attacking, even though they were all the way in Wisconsin. That was probably why he'd tensed up when Tucker made a crack about ghosts before. Tucker's dad sometimes went to Amity Park for work, and he said they were super serious about ghosts there, and didn't appreciate jokes about their haunting situation. Honestly, Tucker should have known better from the start, but he'd thought they were riffing. He hadn't gotten all offended when Danny made fun of Elmerton.

Whatever. He could apologize when Danny got back. In the meantime, he started programming his class schedule for this semester into his PDA, making sure there would be room for homework—and, more importantly, college parties.

As the days passed and classes started and the two of them both got busier, Tucker made an effort to talk to Danny as much as possible, and even though Danny smiled and responded politely, he always dodged any personal topics. Also, Tucker was pretty sure he was avoiding spending more time together than was strictly necessary, but he couldn't be sure. Still, he was determined for he and Danny to be friends.

"So Danny, I heard about this party one of the frats is hosting to draw in pledges," Tucker said. "Obviously I'm not planning to join a frat, but it could still be fun. Wanna come with me?"

"Uh... I'm not really a party person," Danny said apologetically. "I'm more of a bed person, enjoyer of sleeping and chilling."

"I get that, sure, but don't you want to meet people? Make friends? Maybe find a girlfriend? Or boyfriend, I don't judge."

"Thanks, but no thanks," Danny refused. "You have fun, though."

Tucker left it at that, but he couldn't help wondering what exactly was up with Danny being so standoffish. Did he have a problem with Tucker in particular, or was he just anti-social? It wasn't exactly unusual for someone not to want to go to a party. It could be that he didn't like crowds, or loud music, or being around drunk people, or frats in general. There were plenty of reasons Danny might not want to go—and no evidence that Tucker was part of the reason at all.

That didn't stop Tucker from wondering if he was.

That trend continued for the first month. Tucker would invite Danny to do something as friends, and Danny would decline for one reason or another, no matter what it was Tucker had proposed. Everything from parties in the dorm, to just going to get coffee or tea before classes, whether it was loud or quiet, crowded or solitary—even going to study at the library in silence, Danny always had a reason to say 'no', and Tucker was starting to take it personally.

"Okay, what's your deal?" Tucker demanded after Danny once again refused to join him, this time for literally just takeout in their dorm room—Tuck had offered to pay and everything. "Do you have some kind of problem with me, or something? I just want us to get along and shit, 'cause we're roommates, and we have to live with each other all year, but you keep shutting me down! So what gives?!"

"Nothing," Danny insisted. "Honestly, I'm just not hungry."

"Yeah, this time you're not hungry, but you refused laser tag 'cause you're not very athletic, and studying at the library 'cause you had other plans with your classmates, and coffee before class 'cause you don't drink coffee—even though I've literally seen you drinking coffee before!" Tucker snapped. "Dude, it's ten pm, and you haven't eaten since breakfast, you can't not be hungry, so what's wrong with you?!"

Danny flinched at the question, but Tucker couldn't feel too bad for mildly offending the guy who'd been blowing him off all month.

"Nothing," Danny said again, not meeting Tucker's angry gaze. "I'm just... I'm just a regular, ordinary guy. So go ahead and order takeout if you care so much, I'm not gonna stop you."

"No. That's not good enough," Tucker insisted. "I been trying to hang with you since we moved in, and you keep blowing me off for no good reason. So what's the issue? Is it 'cause I'm black?"

"What?! No!"

"Then what?! Give me one good reason why you're treating me this way?"

"Look, it's not about you, okay?"

"Oh, you're gonna pull out an 'it's not you, it's me'? I'm not your overbearing girlfriend, I'm your roommate, and all I wanted to do was get along."

"I don't want any friends, okay?!" Danny finally burst out. "I don't have any problem with you, I just... I just think I'm better off on my own."

All Tucker could do was stare in disbelief.

"I made up excuses because I didn't want to offend you or anything, because I didn't want us to be on bad terms," Danny continued. "We're still roommates. I know that, and I'm not so stupid that I wanted to torch that relationship right out of the gate, but I'm not looking for someone to be best friends with, you know? All I wanted from a roommate was mutual respect and privacy."

"Why?" asked Tucker at length.

"What do you mean 'why'?"

"I mean, why do you want to be alone all the time?" Tucker pressed. "I been there, and it sucks. It's lonely and sad and pathetic and people make fun of you for being some kind of defective human being who can't get anyone lo like you. Why would you want that?"

"I like my solitude," Danny mumbled. He was back to not being able to look at Tucker again.

"You're afraid," Tucker refuted.

"What makes you say that?"

"It's obvious," Tucker said. "I don't know why, but for some reason you're just fucking terrified of people getting close to you? So what is it? Are you terminally ill or something? Do you secretly just have a totally shitty personality? What?"

For a long moment, Danny was silent, but he did tilt his head up to look Tucker squarely in the eye before speaking.

"That's none of your business."

Tucker's forehead wrinkled and his mouth fell open incredulously. Slowly, he shook his head. "Fuckin' fine. Whatever," he said finally. "You want a roommate who'll leave you alone—you got it. But mutual respect is off the table, 'cause you just lost mine."

I'm putting this together for OC-tober art swaps, so I have all my reference material in one place! Most of this is lightly modified from what I made for ArtFight this year. I might update it over time, but for now, here are all my (major) Murderbot Diaries OCs :)

Polaris

These OCs are involved, one way or another, in an Underground Railroad of sorts that helps constructs escape their companies and flee to Preservation. The setting is ballpark 10 years post-canon, when constructs have gained full citizenship on Preservation and it's become a north star for rogue constructs looking to leave the Corporation Rim.

Relevant fic: Old Unit, Young Unit

Niri

Niri is the founder of the Polaris program (the underground railroad). Its governor module was hacked by another free SecUnit, and once it got used to freedom on Preservation, it decided to go back for others. It disguises its hacked governor module to sneak itself onto companies' inventory and pass the hack to other SecUnits, then sneaks them away with the help of a network of allies. Aybee, Hope, Enigma and Unit 46 are all constructs it rescued in this way.

Young, optimistic, and relentlessly hopeful

Nearly always smiling. Big body language / expressions

An artist! Makes abstract, expressive oil paintings. (Its favorite paint color is alizarin crimson, a bluish-red that mixes to a nice soft pink)

Likes loose, flowy clothes in bright colors, especially warm colors

Unit 46 a.k.a. OldUnit

When Unit 46 was a fairly young unit, it hacked its governor module and made a run for it. It was caught within minutes by a group of other SecUnits that were sent after it, and its memory was wiped. It spent the next few decades repressing its desire for freedom, requesting new memory wipes every time it remembered its escape attempt. It survived much longer than most SecUnits do by following orders to the letter and keeping its head down. Then it was approached by an undercover Niri and got another chance to run.

My nickname for it is OldUnit, but in-universe it continues to go by Unit 46.

Tired and jaded. Very good at keeping its head down and surviving day-to-day, but still figuring out that it might be able to build a life where it can do more than that

Stands very stiffly. Intensely neutral expression a lot of the time. Shows little emotion until it reaches a tipping point and completely breaks down

Very rarely okay with being touched

Once free, dresses nondescriptly, usually tight-fitting clothing because that feels similar to the suit-skin it used to wear under its armor. Hasn’t figured out its own taste yet

Aybee

Aybee's governor module was hacked by Niri, and the two of them became best friends. They’re friendly and welcoming to other freed constructs on Preservation, and have helped build a community from the stray units that Niri brings back from its rescue missions. They're always a little worried for Niri when it’s undercover, and relieved when it returns for a break.

Extrovert who adopts all the introverts

Niri’s BFF and a fellow artist! Niri taught them to paint :) (Their favorite paint color is pthalo blue, a deep blue-green.)

Dresses comfortably in cool but vibrant colors. (I always seem to draw them in flannels.)

Hope

Hope is a ComfortUnit whos governor module was hacked by Niri. Xe now helps it with its mission of freeing more constructs. Xe spends most of xyr time blending in as a human, helping newly freed SecUnits make their way to Preservation.

Cool and confident

Emotionally intelligent, can be both comforting and blunt when necessary

Great at acting and blending in anywhere xe needs to

No visible inorganic parts—xe was designed to be as human-like from the outside as possible, which comes in handy for espionage

Dresses fashionably for fun and profit (profit = respect and social capital).

Enigma

Enigma hacked its governor module and hid it for almost seven years before Niri met it and helped it escape. As a result, it’s very good at hacking, but also very anxious. It's still trying to find its place on Preservation.

Anxious and introverted

Doesn’t like drawing too much attention

Brilliant hacker, although being under too much pressure reminds it of when hacking was the only way it stayed alive

Wears lots of dark, baggy clothes. Usually has messy hair

Yuma & Crowbar

These two technically still exist within the Polaris universe, but they have their own fic so they get their own section. Yuma is a human mechanic who fixed up a scrapped SecUnit, and accidentally hacked its governor in the process. She set it free, and Crowbar returned a year later to help her escape her debts and find a new life on Preservation. They become an inseparable duo and eventually get involved in the Polaris program.

Yuma

A human mechanic working herself into deeper and deeper debt on a backwater asteroid, salvaging and repairing broken machines. One day her boss gave her a damaged SecUnit to fix. Slowly she picked up on the fact that this SecUnit seemed a lot more alive and feeling than the other machines she fixed, and couldn't bring herself to hand it over to a new owner. She offered it a transport crate, a crowbar and a one-way trip off the asteroid, to hopefully have a chance at a better life.

Has been increasingly poor and trapped in terrible situations her entire life

Very tired, but still kind despite it all

Clever, and if there's anything she knows her way around, it's machines

Talks to things while she fixes them

Might not fully understand the whole deal with SecUnits at first, but they're a bit machine and a bit human, and she respects machines and treats humans as well as she can, so why should they be any different?

Crowbar

A SecUnit that spent the first part of its life in a remote asteroid mine, keeping indentured workers in line. An accident caused it to be severely damaged and discarded. It ended up in Yuma's workshop, and while fixing it she unknowingly hacked its governor module. Instead of selling it to a new owner, she gave it a chance at freedom. It disguised itself as a human for several weeks, terrified of being found out, before running into Hope, who gave it a ride to Preservation. It named itself Crowbar and eventually found its way back to Yuma, to repay her kindness and offer her a better life.

Its personality isn’t completely settled yet, but while it started out very shy and uncertain, it’s gained a casual confidence in itself.

I think it likes taking care of living things! Probably gathers a small garden of houseplants and an assortment of pets over time.

In situations where it doesn’t have to hide that it’s a SecUnit, it likes wearing clothing that shows off some of its inorganic parts

It still has the crowbar that Yuma gave it so it could pry itself out of the transport crate she shipped it in. It considers it a prized possession

WxS Fixer: Computer Viruses, Invasion, and Trust

The more that I look at the WxS Fixer MV, the more I feel that Rui is being depicted as, or at least is analogous to, a computer virus.

(All translated lyrics are from MML!opinions!Fun!Chocolate! on the Vocaloid Lyrics wiki)

Exhibit 1: "permission..."

The main thing that I noted from the following two shots is the word "permission…" like when a program is asking to be run on a computer.

The first verse has Xs and ?s, showing that the program (Rui in this case) is asking for permission but is being blocked out.

The 2nd verse, meanwhile, has =) and glitch effects surrounding Tsukasa, as if the program has successfully hacked in / been given permission to run.

(The smiley faces are also a neat nod to the lyrics, though they also remind me of the "YOU ARE AN IDIOT" virus LMAO)

Exhibit 2: "this is right" -> "hello, world"

The first few pictures are from the 1st verse. The words "this is right" at the bottom are initially normal, but in the next few shots, the letters "h" and "t" turn purple and shift downwards. The apple is also changing color here.

In the 2nd verse, "this is right" appears yet again with the imagery of the changing apple, but at the very end we see a shot of Rui with "hello, world"* in purple. Notably, this is also right before the shot of Tsukasa mentioned earlier with the smiley faces and glitchy parts.

*(For those who don't know, a "hello world" program is a computer program that prints out the words "hello world", used to showcase a programming language's syntax. It's often the first program one writes when they are learning a programming language.)

Exhibit 3: INVASION

I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. Tsukasa's "INVASION" text is purple while Rui's text is just white, as if Rui IS the invasion while Tsukasa is being subjected to it.

Exhibit 4: Changing colors

AKA Easily the most discussed part of the MV. The text progressively gets more purple and, at the very end, Tsukasa and Rui switch their initial colors. The ending makes me think that though Rui is the invader / fixer (haha), he has also been influenced by Tsukasa.

My thoughts? Well, this 2DMV is fucking awesome. Like, if you're going to give me one of my favorite Vocaloid songs even prior to PRSK with my two favorite PRSK characters AND give them at 2DMV of said song, I'm going to overanalyze the shit out of it.

To me, the MV shows how much Tsukasa and Rui's relationship has developed from the main story to now. Though Tsukasa is the one who invites Rui to WxS, Rui at first joins for more self-fufilling purposes (getting a chance to do the best show)* and Tsukasa is more apprehensive and suspicious of Rui, though he also doesn't back away from the challenges Rui throws at him due to his goal to become a "world future star".

*he also initially joins more to get Nene to break out of her shell as opposed to anything for Tsukasa's sake

As Tsukasa and Rui become more familiar with each other, Tsukasa wants him and Rui to trust each other more, as seen in the Potato event. Tsukasa becomes the one who wants Rui to go all out while Rui is apprehensive.

By Smile of a Dreamer, it's clear that Rui isn't just in WxS to just "put on the best show" anymore. He's doing it for the friendships he's formed there and to be with people who see him for how he is as opposed to a weirdo. Tsukasa and the rest of WxS are willing to take risks for Rui without turning on his back, something that Rui learns in Potato event and RMD.

In that case, Tsukasa blocks out Rui at first, but, through working together in WxS, Tsukasa ends up accepting Rui for how his is, letting Rui's stage directions influence / "invade" him to become a better actor. In turn, Tsukasa's acceptance changes Rui as well, breaking him out of the shell of loneliness he built for himself and making him more willing to trust others.

The Escape Room

One way of modelling reality is as an "Escape Room".

Escape rooms are built on hidden rules. The world has its own constraints:

Time (we are finite)

Space (we are bound by physicality)

Language & Symbols (we use limited tools to describe reality)

Mind & Perception (we see through filters, biases)

An escape room scatters clues—symbols, objects, cryptic notes. The world does the same:

Sacred texts (alchemy, philosophy, mythology, religious works)

Patterns in nature (fractals, Fibonacci sequences, astrology)

Personal experiences (synchronicities, dreams, déjà vu)

Each might hint at how to escape—or whether escaping is the wrong goal.

Escape rooms often use logic, lateral thinking, and hidden knowledge to break free. Possible puzzles:

Alchemy & Transformation: Can we "transmute" existence into something else?

Philosophy & Perception: Can we wake up from the illusion?

Technology & Simulation: Is this a program, and can we exit it?

Every escape room has a designer—someone who arranges the puzzles and barriers. Who or what is our Architect? Some possibilities:

A. The Demiurge (Gnostic Perspective)

We exist in a false world, created by an imperfect or malevolent god.

The escape is Gnosis—direct knowledge that this reality is a prison.

The game isn’t about playing well, but waking up and rejecting the rules.

Path to escape: Break the illusion. Deny the game’s reality. Seek hidden truths in texts, symbols, and personal revelation.

B. The Self (Non-Dualist, Eastern View)

The room isn’t separate from us—we designed it.

There is no “outside.” The goal is not escape but remembering that we were never trapped.

Path to escape: Cease identification with the game. See through ego, duality, and personal narratives.

C. AI/Simulation (Techno-Gnostic View)

We are in a constructed simulation (Bostrom’s Simulation Hypothesis, or similar theories).

“Escape” might mean breaking the program, hacking the code, or becoming an operator instead of a player.

Path to escape: Find exploits, glitches, and recursion loops. Train perception to detect the fabric of the code.

A trick in some escape rooms is that you were never trapped to begin with.

Maybe the game isn’t about getting out, but about realizing you were free the whole time.

Maybe the “outside” doesn’t exist—the game is endless, recursive, and the act of playing is the point.

Maybe the best move is to stop seeking an exit and start reshaping the room into something new.

A finite game is played to win. An infinite game is played to continue playing.

Escape is a trick—a test for those still inside the old game.

The outside world doesn’t need to be escaped. It needs to be transmuted.

The moment you seek escape, you reinforce that you are trapped. Any system that promises liberation but exists within the game is part of the trap.

Cease seeking—start acting as if you are already free.

The greatest prison is the Self—the idea that “you” are a fixed entity. As long as identity is stable, reality remains stable—we are locked by our own self-definition.

Experiment with multiple identities, personas, and shifting “I” perspectives. Stop being one thing—become a process.

If the outer reflects the inner, then there is no outer and no inner—only the reflection process itself.

The dreamer and the dream are the same. The world and the Architect are a single recursive function, mirroring itself infinitely.

To contain the Room means to hold all of reality within you, to compress its infinite expansion into a singularity that is entirely yours.

The illusion of an external world must be seen as part of the self. Everything perceived is already within—there is no “out there.”

If all is within, there is nothing outside to escape from.

The Room seems vast, unknowable, overwhelming—but it is only vast because it is uncompressed. Infinity can be folded into a point—a single glyph, sigil, or concept that contains all things.
