SpaceTime Series 28 Episode 06 Formation of Pluto-Charon Binary System A new study reveals that the formation of the Pluto-Charon dwarf planet binary system may mirror that of the Earth-Moon system. The research, published in Nature Geoscience, suggests that both systems feature a secondary body significantly large in comparison to the primary, unlike other moons in our solar system. The findings could explain Pluto's active geology and potential subsurface ocean, highlighting the significance of giant impacts in shaping planetary bodies. BepiColombo's Final Mercury Flyby The BepiColombo spacecraft has completed its final close flyby of Mercury, passing just 295 kilometres above the planet's surface. This manoeuvre marks the last gravity assist required for the joint ESA and JAXA mission before it enters Mercury's orbit in late 2026. The mission aims to study Mercury's magnetic field, surface composition, and interaction with the solar wind, enhancing our understanding of planets close to their host stars. Astronomy Highlights for 2025 2025 promises exciting astronomical events, with the Sun's solar cycle nearing its peak. Highlights include a rare edge-on view of Saturn's rings, potential brightening of comet G3 Atlas, and two lunar eclipses. The year also features significant planetary alignments, meteor showers, and opportunities to observe the Southern Cross and the centre of the Milky Way. Dr. Nick Glom provides insights into these celestial events and more. 00:00 This is space Time Series 28, Episode 6 for broadcast on 13 January 2025 00:27 A new study suggests the formation of the Pluto Charon dwarf planet binary system 04:35 BepiColombo spacecraft makes its final flyby of Mercury 09:27 This is space time. What's your take on the argument that the Earth and the Moon are a binary system, like Pluto and Charon? Based on the fact that they're quite close in size, roughly a 1:81 ratio iirc, which is nowhere near Pluto/Charon's 1:4 but still much bigger than Saturn/Titan's 1:4200. I've also seen Earth/Moon as both being in orbit around the sun rather than Moon orbiting Earth, but frankly I don't entirely get that.
I can see it, like the moon is weirdly huge, it's one of the biggest moons in the whole solar system & our relationship with it feels specialer than most planets and satellites. The barycenter isn't outside the earth's surface, which is the argument i used to say that pluto & charon are a binary dwarf planet system, but if that's the sole criteria then the sun & jupiter are a binary system too because distance is a complicating variable. I am still a staunch charon dwarf planet truther but that might lead me to some new ideas abt the earth and the moon.

I have this xenofiction idea set in an alien solar system. One of the intelligent species ideas i had are octopoid-looking but terrestrial creatures that communicate via bioluminescence, and don't vocally communicate but do have hearing.
I started thinking about how blind members of this species would communicate. Does tactile sign language work if you only have identical tentacles and no fingers or toes?
Hey!
My first idea when you mentioned identical limbs was the Lorm alphabet. It's a kind of tactile communication (not really a sign language, more of a signed letter-by-letter transcript) that is virtually unknown outside Central Europe and Georgia in my experience. It requires a single limb from each person. For the Lorm alphabet, you tap and stroke the person's hand (or foot, I've seen it adapted to a double arm amputee too) and the amount of taps and their position (also line or circular movements) signal specific letters. Here's a video to visualize it from the French DeafBlind association - TLDW: two people using Lorm at great speeds at a conference.
What that means for alien creatures who have identical limbs is that there could be Aliorm alphabet where a specific spot on the tentacle signals a specific letter/syllable/binary code/etc and thus allow them to communicate. So if the aliens have some way to codify their bioluminescence-based language into a written system, they could use that.
Another option is to do another kind of non-oral language. Humans have ones that rely on hearing, seeing, and feeling, but aliens could have ones that are based on smell or taste. Especially if they original one is bioluminescence, I don't think it's too farfetched to imagine they could produce other chemicals that perhaps could be smelled as a form of alien olfactory language.
I'd personally love to see the Lorm alphabet in any sort of media ever, but considering you're writing about aliens, you have a lot of possibilities - there's no one single correct answer unless you find a blind alien to ask.
I hope this helps,
mod Sasza

hi heres Wolftopia be nice to him !!! I thought you guys would enjoy this design and since I spent awhile on her i figured i'd post pup all by themself :3
Copy paste of their toyhouse desc below! It's not too long but it gives context as to what her design is based off of etc! To summarize though ; Wolftopia is based off an Exoplanet of the same name that I thought was cool and pretty.
(...I'm sorry in advance to anyone who searches up 'Wolftopia' at any point expecting the planet who gets this in their search results. Very sorry.)
SPINDLING WISPS OF TWO-TONED CLOUDS - 'Wolftopia' aka 'TOI 1338 b'
Any/All + Paw/Paws, Pup/Pups, Wer/Wol
Genderfluid + Novosexual
Wolftopia, or TOI 1338 b is an exoplanet orbiting a Binary Star System which means it orbits two stars that orbit each other. This may seem rare to your One-Star centered brain, but in fact Binary Star Systems (And Multiple-Star systems with more then 2) are actually far more common then just having one star! Our sun is quite lonely in this way. Another fact that might be similarly shocking to those of you who grew up in the solar system is that most planetary systems (stars that have planets) tend to have lower numbers of planets then ours does. While systems with 8 (or more) planets do exist, they just don't tend to be as common as lower numbers of planets. However, there is quite a bit of bias in the way we detect planets- so it's not out of the realm of possibility that some stars have more planets then we thought.
On to Wolftopia herself though. He considers the stars he orbits (TOI 338 B and TOI 338 A - Note the capital letters as opposed to the lowercase of TOI 1338 b) as parents of a sort as they're quite loving and protective. Yes this is a family dynamic, yes it doesn't have much plot, but thats ok because Wolftopia isn't involved in the major Solar System anyways pup gets to be happy and healthy and can frolic and have fun. Wer also has a sibling named TOI 133 a (these names might be the death of me). Wolftopia is a kind and fun planet even if he's quite quiet. She's pretty bad at clocking sarcasm and humor so they tend to be a bit sensitive and unsure of how to navigate conversations. Paws also a therian if you didn't notice! Specifically a Wolf Therian! Yippie!!!!!!! Really I just wanted to have fun designing and drawing this cool exoplanet. I do not give a shit if theres thousands of other exoplanets just like it, wolftopia is pretty to me.

The binary stars!!!
Lore ↓
most celestial bodies have avatars/incarnations, typically mobians, with the one exception of the sun, who would cycle through human avatars. the last was Maria.
Shadow was created to take the mantle and hopefully save not just Maria, but the entire solar system. Instead, upon his creation a second sun was born. Shadow's star was quickly burning up, threatening to supernova, so he was put into stasis. His star cooled, and later, Maria's star/the sun died, leaving the Earth hopeless in the cold and dark. (Although Amy [Earth] and Knuckles [moon] are doing their best to keep its inhabitants alive.)
A short while after Maria's star dies, a new sun begins to form in it's wake, with Sonic born as the new sun, although Shadow's star still exists, it is cold and not visible from Earth.
50 years later, Shadow is woken and meets Sonic.

SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 156 Superflares: A Century-Long Threat? A new study warns of the potential for our Sun to unleash superflares, with the threat estimated at once per century. These massive eruptions could engulf the Earth, challenging our understanding of solar behaviour. Evidence from other sun-like stars suggests that such violent solar events may be more common than previously thought, urging caution as we continue to study these phenomena. Binary Star Discovery Near Galactic Core Astronomers have identified the first binary star system near Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy. This discovery, made using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope, offers new insights into how stars can survive in extreme gravitational environments. The findings could pave the way for detecting planets orbiting close to this massive black hole. NASA's Lucy Mission: Onward to Jupiter NASA's Lucy spacecraft has completed its second close flyby of Earth, gaining a gravity assist to propel it towards Jupiter's Trojan asteroids. This manoeuvre is part of Lucy's 12-year mission to study these ancient celestial bodies, believed to be remnants from the early solar system. The spacecraft's journey promises to unlock new secrets about the formation of our planetary neighbourhood. 00:00 This is Spacetime Series 27, episode 156 for broadcast on 27th December 2024 00:48 New observations suggest our sun may be far more violent than previously thought 05:17 Astronomers detect binary star system near supermassive black hole 08:49 NASA's Lucy spacecraft makes second close flyby of the Earth 10:37 NASA's Lucy mission is heading to the Jupiter Trojans 12:26 Sea ice levels in the ocean surrounding Antarctica reach new record lows in 2023 13:52 A new study claims drinking moderate amounts of wine can ward off heart disease 15:05 There are headlines saying believing in Loch Ness monster makes you less stressed www.spacetimewithstuartgary.com www.bitesz.com 🌏 Get Our Exclusive NordVPN deal here ➼ www.bitesz.com/nordvpn. Was talking 2 my husband on the walk home from our friends house tonight about the moon and solar eclipses in fiction and I started ranting about the fact that in DAV the eclipse could be seen from more than just Minrathous and I was like “yeah it just isn’t possible even tho the moon is HUGE” (I’m a solar eclipse nerd I’ve seen 2 so far) and he was like “well how huge” and I demonstrated based on what we see in the game and he was like “ohhhh it’s a binary planet system” like it was OBVIOUS or something idk and I went “what” and then I told him about Satinalia and how it’s only seen once a year and we determined that it’s an ellipsoid orbit but I’m still not over binary planet Thedas system. I need to go to sleep but when I wake up. I’ll be thinking about the Moons of it all.
