Your au were right on a few things about the kids. Kazui being a cute kid but also felt off. I think everyone felt that just didn’t know how much. A part of me figured that he got so much of his mother’s personality (her ditz-ness, and odd hobbies, well odd food tastes) I’m still questioning where he learned to open gates of hell buts that’s another time
Ichika being 20% feral is right on the mark to I just figure she puts up a brave (and hotheaded, like her dad) front but is still a kid. If anything she might have a disposition like her uncle and mother when around people….and be like her father and teacher in a fight.
We just got to wait and see but I am glad Kubo’s health is better.
Yeah see the thing is, Orihime hates war and bloodshed. She tries to be strong, but she gets very distressed by it, ( Didn't want to heal ichigo in Grimm's fight, became nervous / sick when Ichigo was losing to Grimm, witnessed Ichigo die and failed to heal him, became horrified at Ichibe's resurreccion, etc... ) (and on occasion cries for the fallen) Renji and Urahara knew she was not suited for war and wanted to be straight with her. That kind of personality with Ichigo's power level just seems contradictory.
I joke about Kazui being a demon, but my version of Kazui does it on purpose because he is sociopathic. Kubo's Kazui most likely does it because he is ignorant... (or who knows, maybe he is sociopathic in canon too. Children don't always have a moral code, some of them really need to be taught it)
If he's demonic, he's only demonic because he thinks, since he's naive, that he is doing something good. He thinks by sending that plus soul to Hell, Kazui is helping him. He thinks "everyone goes to hell" since he is surrounded by powerful people. But he doesn't know that weak plus and fullbringers like his mother cannot go to Hell because A. they are good people, B. are weak enough to be reborn and not stuck in the realm unlike his father.
Kazui either doesn't notice Hell's eyes on him, or that the portal he sent that plus soul into had teeth. Though how did he know people were in Hell if he didn't go there himself? Kazui should have seen the blood shed, he should have sensed the danger.
The only reasonable explanation for how Kazui knows how to open the Gates of Hell would be from Yhwach. That's the only thing that makes sense. Again, I think Yhwach possessed him. Especially now that Kubo said high reishi concentrated souls can't die. Yhwach might be like Old Man Zangetsu now, where he is repressed in Kazui's soul. Yhwach might be whispering things to him. Might be training him in secret. Might be telling him everyone goes to Hell, and how to get there. Might be tricking him into transfering plus souls there. In that case, Kazui is in major danger.
Because when Yhwach regains strength, he can and will possess Kazui (Just as Zangetsu did to Ichigo to kill the soul king.) I don't know what Yhwach is planning through Kazui though...?
~~~
Yeah Ichika is feral. No sense of responsibility, though I can't blame her since she is a child. Thinks her dad Renji is going to the living world "to play" without her. I was pleased to see her terrified and hiding behind her father, because it showed she wasn't one dimensional unlike Kazui (at this point, at least.) And she's actually now seeing battle for real. That war is not what she thought it was. She really gets perspective upon seeing Szayel, and how weak she is. Kinda knocks her ego down a peg.
Though again, I'm worried she's going to be Kazui's morality pet or someone who just sits there. SHe's a regular shinigami child, she's only able to handle weak hollows right now at best. I can't expect her to handle a vasto lorde arrancar, especially one even her father can't beat.
(This is why I call Kazui a demon, because he is clearly not a normal child. He would probably do something strange, I kind of believe he is OP and would kill a Vasto Lorde somehow, despite having no training or battle experience.)
So these are my predictions. I seem to be somewhat right so far, so we will see if Kubo goes with my theory.
(And I'd like to reiterate: Chad and Orihime will be nonexistent in this arc. Maybe a single cameo at best, but otherwise uninvolved. Perhaps even Uryuu too. I'm placing bets on this. Orihime willingly going to hell? ...no)
Ah yeah, I don't know about Kubo. I don't think picking bLEACH back up after everything that has happened, including COVID still being afoot... I just really don't think his health is going to stay "okay". Especially starting a new arc with a company that originally canceled you.
Watching the Rise of the Titans movie and I'll be documenting all of my thoughts/reactions here. [Spoiler Warning]
So instead of reblogging every new update, I'm just going to have this post up on my phone as I watch and type my reactions in a bullet list format.
Nari's human disguise is so cute. As someone who does have a cottagecore aesthetic, I want to cosplay her so bad
Are Skrael and/or Belroc non-binary coded? Regardless, I'm also obsessed and I want to fuck Skrael and be Belroc.
STEVE CARING ABOUT JIM BEING HURT YESSSS!!! My god his redemption has probably been one of the greatest there is because he doesn't just suddenly go from being a bully to a completely good person. You can see the gradual shift in learning better throughout the shows which is awesome.
IN NEW YOOOOOOORRRRRRRK!!!!!! CONCRETE JUNGLE WHERE DREAMS ARE MADE OFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!
The mugshot montage reminded me of season 1 of trollhunters when toby and Jim were arrested at the museum.
STRICKLER PUT A RING ON IT??? HE'S THE ONLY DILF IVE EVER ACTUALLY AGREED WAS HOT WYM I CAN'T HAVE HIM??? well I'm still really happy about his arc over the series probably one of my favorite character growths.
Eli my guy got his growth spurt!!! As an 18 year old who is still 5'0", I'm happy but envious for him
So I went into this movie without watching any trailers or promo, but I doubt anything could have prepared me for the existence of mpreg. In fact, I wasn't going to document my reactions until I saw that.
NAMURA!!!!!!!!! MY BELOVED!!!!!! I CAN STILL THIRST FOR YOU WITHOUT GUILT
The coach teacher just called the kids zoomers so I have to dock one point from my final rating just because of that. Unforgivable
Those husky animation models suck lmao
Oh fuck the titans got power ranger zords!!
God why did they include the mpreg??? This movie would have been perfect without it.... After that plot point being revisited only one time I'm already beyond done with it
Like it's bringing me back to the v*ltron days where they're was a suspiciously high amount of klance omegaverse and mpreg fics and art created and it physically hurts because Steve and Keith's voice actor is the same person meaning this is especially cursed to me since I was unfortunately in the v*ltron fandom and remember all of that
But like on another note, how old are these characters again??? I haven't checked any wikis because of spoilers but is Steve an adult??? I know aja might be technically a lot older than 18 because alien but is whatever age she is equivalent to an adult as far as emotionally and physically in Akaridion development??? IS THIS A TEEN (M)PREGNANCY IN A KIDS SHOW????
Like bruh I saw a singular post on here before going into the movie that was like "rott spoilers without context" and there was a pregnant belly but I was absolutely not expecting the actual context of it. I'll find the post after I finish and edit this post to tag the creator right here: @makoden
This entire post is just gonna be me ranting about mpreg huh
Anyway I love the whole roundtable allusion to the legends of king arthur (not the toa version but the one he's based off)
THERE'S 3 TO 5 BABIES????? I need to take a break bruh this is just too much
Alright I've taken a 30 minute break got some food and did some things i love (decompressed by tactile stimming with some owl plushies and watched some videos on my favorite owl, Garu. He lives in Japan with his owner and is a domesticated eagle owl who basically just acts like a sky cat. If anyone else needs some eye bleach, here is their YouTube channel)
Blinky and ARRRGHHH!!! saying their "if one of us doesn't make it" talk my god one of them is going to die I can see it and I will be utterly crushed. Jim can't lose another father figure and Toby can't lose his wingman again I will riot if this happens
On a similar but unrelated to the movie note, can we just talk about how toa started with Jim having 0 dads and (if strickler and blinky live to the end) will end with 2 dads? Like I just really feel happy for him that he has two dads who actually figured out how to put the past behind them to not have any infighting between them so that both of them are healthy father figures. Jim has already been through literal hell and back losing his actual humanity in the process so if he loses one of them, I'm going to be really pissed because at this point, this is just Jim torture porn. Y'all know how as SpongeBob SquarePants went on, the show just became Squidward torture porn? It's starting to feel that way for toa and I really hope they cut the shit by the ending
Jlaire is such a good ship but like I feel like it's too perfect they never disagree with each other
YESSSSSSS Someone finally doesn't treat toby like a fat waste of space who messes stuff up!!! I think out of all the characters that would have been most deserving of a rewrite, it's Toby. Sometimes I just feel he's only comic relief and any heartfelt moments he's had in the series was also born of stupidity (ie his flour baby project being unharmed was seen by him as divine intervention from his parents but was actually just Eli and Steve behind the scenes).
Ohhhhh yesssssss Archie's father!!! I was hoping I'd see him again because we got so little of him last
Ooooooooooh Asian trollmarket!!!!!
Oh never mind slavery trollmarket
Bruh titanic camelot
I feel like we're not seeing enough of the villains because I completely forgot about the power ranger zord things
NAMORA NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MY LAST CRUSHHHH
STRICKLER NO NOT YOU TOO PLEASE
WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE ONLY TWO CHARACTERS I SIMP FOR ON THIS SHOW DIED WITHIN FIVE MINUTES OF EACH OTHER
THAT WHOLE ASS RANT I WROTE IS COMING TRUE FUCK THIS MOVIE THIS SERIES IS JUST JIM TORTURE PORN
WAIT JIM'S SPERM DONOR INFO?
Oh thank God I don't want to know anything about that person
For the record, I call that man Jim's sperm donor because he has no business being called a father to him. All he did was donate some swimmers to the creation of him and give him abandonment issues
Oh another blind troll elder???? This fucker is just if vendel was a bad guy
Bruh I was grieving
PACIFIC RIM WITH GUN ROBOT VEX AND THE BELROCZORD? I've never seen that movie but I know the reference
Bruh Blinky doesn't read horoscopes? Does he realize conspiracy theories are just the manly version of horoscopes?
NO DON'T KILL VEX STOP KO-ING FOUND FAMILY MEMBERS
Oh thank God he's okay
NO NOT ARCHIE AND CHARLEMAGNE OH MY GOD
oh never mind they're just gonna coup de tat I believe in them :))
But I want to see him again
But I'm glad to see vex
Yay they're in arcadia!
But yeah I wondered why the trolls and Merlin didn't keep the whole "daylight doesn't hurt trolls" feature from the eternal night but now Guillermo del Toro I see you were playing the long con in that just to kill my girl Namora :(((
Oooooh I love the animation of the Narizord over Chihuahua!! It looks very good and realistic (if only they could have put some of that into those huskies from before smh)
Bruh the character designs of the arcane order are so good I want to be them
Nari making sure the Skraelzord doesn't crush the bus
DAMN DOUBLE HOMICIDE
Bruh I'm just glad we finally have an answer on why arcadia had everything going on as opposed to literally anywhere else!! I always found that as a weird coincidence for plot convince.
BRUH WERE BACK TO THE MPREG IM SO JEALOUS I FORGOT ABOUT THAT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS BECAUSE I WAS GRIEVING THE LOSS OF MY LOVELIES.
Oh that's real convenient that the ninth configuration meant all of them. Way to not decide which character gets more attention. Though it probably was a smart way to not have any infighting in the fandom between each character's stan group.
Bruh I just realized where is Barbera did they just ditch her on the Camelot ship???
And where are the other trolls that migrated at the end of trollhunters s3? They said something about new jersey but obviously Jim and the other main characters got on Camelot instead.... This feels like a plot hole
And we never learned the process of how changelings are made and bonded to humans and stuff. We just know it's super painful but I'm curious ffs!!!!
THE DONT THINK BECOME HERO SPEECH ALL SAID TOGETHER!!!
BRUH THEY REALLY HAD TO SHOW HIM GIVING BIRTH??????? WAS THAT AN ABSOLUTE MUST??????
Plus the main audience for this series is little children (the rating for the movie is literally TV-Y7) so even though my adult ass is not in the target audience, I STILL DONT UNDERSTAND WHY WOULD MPREG AND ANAL BIRTH WOULD BE AN IMPORTANT THING TO 7 YEAR OLDS???? THIS IS A LITERAL FETISH HIDDEN IN KIDS CONTENT ITS ELSAGATE ALL OVER AGAIN Y'ALL 😭😭😭😭😭
Though it's probably hypocritical of me to think fetishes don't belong in kids tv when I've openly admitted to thirsting for strickler and namora
HUZZAH
NEW AMULET WAZ GOOD????
STAB THAT BITCH JIM
WAIT NO I SAID STAB NOT GET STABBED
Alright good job just missed the directions at first but you fixed it
SEVEN KIDS?????????
T O B Y ????????????
W A I T NO
N O
IS HE ACTUALLY
OH MY GOD THERE'S HOPE
NO THERE ISN'T
F U C K THIS SHIT THEY REALLY JUST HAD HIM TO BE BULLIED THEN KILLED
Y'ALL IM ACTUALLY CRYING THIS NEVER HAPPENS
I NEVER ACTUALLY GET SO EMOTIONAL OVER MEDIA THAT I CRY IT ONLY HAPPENED ONCE AT THE END OF VOLTRON BUT AHHHHHHHH
W A I T
HE'S GONNA BE BROUGHT BACK?????
HOLD UP THEY'RE JUST GONNA BRING ALL THOSE DEAD PEOPLE BACK??????
WAIT IS HE
BLINKY CALLED HIM A SON
HOLD ON IS THIS GOING TO BE A CLIFFHANGER???????????
BRUH THEY REALLY JUST CAN'T END THE SERIES WITHOUT CLIFFHANGERS like there's always an open ending
TROLLHUNTER TOBY????? You know what forget the whole rants I had on how toby was written they just redeemed it all
And that's all! I'd rate it a 6.5/10 because it's definitely the weakest of all the sequels but still had amazing animation and some good plot points. It's just really hard to look over the bad stuff enough to rate it any higher.
It is time, once again, friends, for me to watch a Bleach Filler Arc and tell you about it. It is time for the Zanpakutou Rebellion.
I wasn’t really sure I wanted to do this one for a number of reasons, but we watched the second episode last night, and it featured Rukia and Renji fighting back-to-back, and sorry fam, we’re doing this, you’re getting the full force of my zanpakutou spirit headcanons whether you want them or not.
Chrome updated and stopped letting me take screenshots a while ago and I am too lazy to figure out another way, so I figured it would be easier to just illustrate these myself. Let’s see how this goes.
Okay, one thing up front. My attitude towards Bleach filler has always been that it’s just for fun, and it’s up to you, the reader/viewer, whether you want to take any of it as canon or not. I, personally, do not accept this story arc as canon, but I honestly don’t care if you do. My main problem is that I don’t think zanpakutou spirits should be humanoid as a rule, although I do headcanon that most zanpakutou can choose how to manifest themselves, and so they may have a humanoid representation, but that’s not necessarily how they usually appear, which also explains why a lot of the shinigami has trouble recognizing their zanpakutou. I also think Muramasa made Hozukimaru put on that skirt, Hozukimaru has the demeanor of a being who does not believe in pants of any variety.
Anyway, as usual, I am ahead of myself. We starts in a cave that looks exactly like the cave from the Bount arc, with some ominous stuff, but I don’t care, I want to talk about Byakuya! Fighting! Renji!
I think every filler arc has an OP with Byakuya fighting Renji that never actually happens, but right here! First episode! Byakuya fighting Renji while Squad 6 stands around and jeers! Kyouraku and Ukitake are here, too, for some reason! It’s super lit! Byakuya stops paying attention halfway through, but he wins anyway and negs Renji a little, and Renji thanks him for the fight very earnestly and Kyouraku and Ukitake tell Renji he did a good job. This is honestly all I want out of Bleach filler. This is my happy place. Thank you, Zanpakutou Arc for these beautiful Squad 6 hijinks.
As if I weren’t on a big enough high, now we cut to Squad 10, where Matsumoto is lounging on the Crash Couch. Hinamori and Isane come in to hand-deliver an invtation to a vice-captains meeting (Aren’t they just… like… on Wednesdays?) and to complain about their zanpakutou (boy, I wish we got to see Isane’s zanpakutou in this arc!! But no!!) Matsumoto, once again, claims to be training for bankai, mostly by complaining a lot. Hitsugaya grumps around, grumpily.
All of this is so, so perfect, I just need a trip with Iba to the shinigami pub, but instead, everyone gets a mysterious invitation from the Captain Commander to come to Soukyoku Hill at midnight. Really? I would not go.
Regardless, everyone goes. This scene is great because there are too many characters standing around and this is filler meaning the animators phoned it in, so whenever one character is talking, there are at least three people in the background not moving and making a facial expression that does not go with whatever else is going on. For example, Sasakibe shows up and falls over, and his body is just… there. In the middle of everything. Also, it’s mostly captains and vice-captains, but also Ikkaku and Yumichika and Rukia are there. Someone’s like, “Hey, Ikkaku and Yumichika, why are you here?” and they’re like, “Uh, Zaraki and Yachiru are on a business trip” and then someone else is like “Hey, Rukia, why are you here?” and she just does Big Shrug Arms. This is perfect Big Filler Energy. They are here because we want to see their embodied zanpakutou spirits obviously, why must you demand explanations?
Anyway, Muramasa shows up in hall his Hot Topic glory and waves his scary fingernails and cries blood and announces that all the zanpakutou have rebelled. Then follows a hilarious scene where everyone tries to do their releases and it doesn’t work.
Episode ends/next episode begins.
Ichigo is bouncing around Karakura, like he does, when Rukia falls out of a senkaimon in the sky. (They can make them next to the ground, I don’t know why they never do) Sode no Shirayuki then shows up and it takes Ichigo a phenomenally long amount of time to figure out who she is. To be honest, I would love if this arc went in the direction that Shirayuki has it out for Ichigo for taking Rukia’s powers (Zanpakutou Headcanon #2: Zanpakutou spirits have zero perspective outside of their shinigami being the most important thing in the world to them, and Shirayuki, especially brainwashed Shirayuki, would love to take a piece out of Ichigo. Obvs, they would become best friends after Ichigo defeats her, as is his way).
After being suitable ominous, Shirayuki ollies out, and Ichigo takes Rukia back to the Shoten for Orihime-heals and flashbacks.
Rukia recaps back to Soukyoku Hill, except this time, Renji’s the only one trying fruitlessly to do his release. One reading of this, is that it’s just a recap, we don’t need to see all this again, except that then they cut to Byakuya making the Mariah Carey “I don’t know her face” for like, 10 whole seconds, and it’s sublime.
Tumblr media
Anyway, everyone starts fighting, and Ikkaku tries to attack Komamura’s zanpakutou, which is such a colossally bad idea. I am always hoping that they will kill off characters during filler arcs and then have them be inexplicably alive later, like they used to do on Teen Titans GO! and I absolutely would have offed Ikkaku at this point if I were in charge. The zanpakutou spirits start absolutely trashing the Seireitei, mostly setting things on fire and causing ice avalanches, and just generally going bananas. I really wish there had been a montage of someone cutting heads off parking meters and spray painting “Fuck the Central 46” on the side of Squad 1, but no.
We then see Rukia and Renji running around, fighting together, and I ascended. This is all I ever want. Bless this arc. They get attacked by Sasakibe’s Gonryuu (I wish there was a running gag of no one knowing who he is, and maybe there is, later, I don’t remember) and Hisagi’s Kazeshini, who is the best zanpakutou in this whole arc, he is an unhinged Nightcrawler with sick abs and I love him. I don’t remember what happened next, because I was so distracted by my OTP doing Battle Couple, but Byakuya shows up, standing on a tower (dude likes standing on a tall thing almost as much as Rukia does), so of course, we have to do “Nii-sama!” “Taichou!” B L E S S.
Then Senbonzakura shows up, also standing on a tall rooftop, dunh dunh DUNH! It’s too bad that the Fullbringer arc sort of ruins this because the whole time, I was like “just nail him in the safety zone,” and honestly, Byakuya having a “safety zone” is… well, it’s kinda lame when you say it out loud. Anyway, Rukia flips out, and Renji’s like, “no, no, I’m sure he’s fine,” and then they get avalanched by Sode no Shirayuki and that’s all Rukia remembers.
As usual, no one is the least bit concerned for Renji, but honestly, if anyone can survive being repeatedly Senbonzakured and Hakurened, it’s that guy.
There’s a part where Rukia is telling this story and Ichigo puts his hand on his chest, and you can see the little wheels in his head turning, like, “where do I keep my zanpakutou? Is it here? What is the ‘heart’?”
Tumblr media
Yoruichi shows up to provide more exposition, as is her Filler Arc duty, and they establish that the rebellion seems to have only gone as far as Soul Society.
Ichigo goes home to sleep in his clothes, but the Mod Souls show up to tell him that Rukia went back to Soul Society in the middle of the night. Man, the Mod Souls are in this arc, W H Y ? ? ?
Urahara agrees to send Ichigo to Soul Society why WHY W H Y would you send the guy with the awesomest and most DNGAF zanpakutou to the place where the zanpakutou are rebelling??? At this point, if I hadn’t seen this before, I would definitely assume that Urahara was behind all of this.
Some other points: Why would you not take Chad and Ishida and Orihime (and Yoruichi, for that matter), people with powers who don’t have zanpakutou? Truly, I tell you, Chad does not mind being woken up for this, and Ishida would love the chance to smugly show up and lecture a bunch of powerless shinigami. Also, if I were in Bleach, you better bet my first reaction to everything would be to ask Orihime to try to reject it, no matter how dumb it sounded. It’s worth a try! I would not go anywhere without Orihime. Orihime is the GOAT. Did we all forget the part in the Bount Arc where she killed some friggin’ ninja? I sure didn’t.
Anyway, that’s it for this time, keep tuning for next episode, where Ichigo will surely have regrets.
Mysterylover watches Bleach Episodes 44-45
mysterylover123
1. Vengeful Uryu looks super cool. Angry “I’m gonna kill ya” Shonen heroes always look more badass and sexy than usual. And apparently he’s using a real awesome technique to move his body like a puppet. This form of fighting sounds like a really neat idea.
2. Oh wow UryuDad is a jerk, huh? Other than Ichi’s dad I’m betting all Shonen dads are contractually obligated to be assholes.
3. Super Saiyan Uryu, as I am now dubbing him, is definitely fast. I love how ridiculously speedy Shonen heroes get when they power up. Oh and now he has to wear a sexy glove all the time? Definitely lovin’ this power up.
4. Wawit wait didn’t Grandpa say that if he takes off the glove he’ll lose his powers for good? Is Ishida gonna seriously be all Togata’d on us and spend the rest of this arc without abilities?!
5. Uryu are you seriously gonna offer to let this asshole go? Like, regardless of your revenge quest and stuff, this guy is obviously bad news. Paralyzed his own assistant, threatened to experiment on Hime, then you, then laughed about killing your grandpa. And he’s a soul reaper so he’s basically already dead. He’s clearly pure evil. Please be the Scar of this show Uryu. This guy is the Shou Tucker and we need at least one anti-hero to ax him off.
6. Aw dammit it looked like Uryu had finally killed him and then he went and liquified himself. Goddammit I need someone to show up and kill this asshole yesterday.
7.  Uryu has been poisoned and clearly needs a cure. Gee, if only you hadn’t gotten rid of your healer. And instead Shinigami lieutenant heals him. And for some reason is glad that Skullface isn’t dead. WTF? Why?!
8. Ishi heads to Ruki’s prison cell thinking about how Ichigo wants to save Ruki and he’s gonna beat him to it. And then gets confronted by another gorram soul reaper guard. Dammit how many are there?
9. ...Aaaand we’re back to Ichigo and Cat Lady training. I assume Ishi’s gonna be fine but still.
10. So Ichigo’s training here is basically the Holy Grail scene from Indiana Jones 3 but with swords. “You chose...poorly.”
11. ...and now we’re all of a sudden seeing something from the POV of some random Soul Reaper guy. Um, worldbuilding I guess? (Why does this episode have schizophrenia?)
12. Hanataro’s been arrested. Dammit Ichi all your companions are screwed. You better get on it and start saving them.
13. RENJI’S BACK AND HAVING RENRUKI FLASHBACKS!!!! YAAAASSSS. C’mon Renji! Break out and help the heroes save Ruki! They bungled it big time (by benching Hime, let’s be real here) and need your whacky brand of help.
14. ORIHIME!!! HIME AGAIN!!! AND SHE’S MEETING PINK HAIR?!?!!? TINY PINK HAIR SHINIGAMI IS MEETING HIME?! WHY’D WE SPEND THE WHOLE EPISODE PUTZING AROUND WITH RANDOM PLOT FACTOIDS WHEN WE COULD’VE SPENT THE WHOLE EP ON THIS?
15. And of course Hime instantly befriends the soul reapers and they agree to follow her around. Because Soul Reaper society maybe jerks but they know greatness when they see it.
16. Uryu Ganju and Chad are all stuck in a cell together huh. OK. And Chad thinks they caught Hime cause she’s ‘not much a fighter’? Oh please. We’ve already seen that Hime is fine and winning the day. Ya’ll are just jealous.
17. “I say we wait for Ichigo” Why does that remind me of something? “Just remember your place and wait for Goku”. Damn that power creep settin in early huh?
18. And apparently the swords are a metaphor for Ichigo’s weaknesses? SO is this like that Teen Titans episode inside Raven’s head with the different emoticon Ravens? Will this arc end with a ton of swords fusing together in Ichigo’s mind to create a model new Ichigo? Who knows. Just gonna get crazy I suppose.
Anime and Animation Recommendations (Includes shows I would never recommend, please read the accompanying text)
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: I feel like this is what would happen if the album Clockwork Angels by Rush was turned into anime, but the main character was replaced by two brothers who actually have a personality and an interesting backstory. Essentially, it is a mix of a compelling take on western philosophy from an eastern perspective, good character writing, and FANTASTIC art direction. Characters undergo meaningful development, it has no filler, and it avoids the problem of power creep fairly well. Adding to that its heavy use of Sakuga an minimalist animation, and it is one of my favorite anime of all time.
Mob Psycho 100: Criminally underrated. With a plot borrowed from a japanese web-comic maker who is surprisingly good at making comedy and relatable themes meld seamlessly, and animated by Studio Bones which is basically my favorite studio, this show is absolutely fantastic, to the point at which it competes with ol’ Fullmetal for my favorite anime. Like its sister anime One Punch Man, this show uses VERY heavy use of both Sakuga and minimalist styles of animation, switching between them in a way that is hardly noticeable but also really captures the feel of the situation; it even switches art styles regularly, and the animators are not afraid to try new things, making the show an absolute blast to watch. Despite its comedy focus, the main characters undergo extensive development, sometimes in the span of a single episode, and the combat sections are mesmerizing to look at.
One Punch Man: Really good show, slightly overrated, but mostly deserving of the attention it gets. As someone who was unemployed for a long time, this show really captures the difficulties of someone in that situation. The plot, such as it is, is pretty repetitive by it’s very nature, but it’s animated by Mad House studios, and is basically composed entirely of Sakuga with short spurts of minimalist animation to remind one of the original web comic (you may notice a theme in the anime I like), making it a blast to watch. Would recommend.
Hero Academia: The Naruto of our generation, and it’s easy to see why it’s so popular. The character designs and personalities are all memorable (such that you can actually remember all their names), and basically all of the main cast gets at least some screen time; as a result, it is really easy to remember basically everyone’s names. Because of the memorable character designs, it is no surprise that the fandom is bursting at the seams with shippers, but for the most part it’s non-toxic and results in a lot of pretty good fan art. And of course, as you guessed, it has Sakuga, and makes good use of it. Finally, as an aside, it has one of the best portrayals of a paragon archetype character I have seen in a long time, in the form of All Might. Would recommend, but I really don’t have to because it’s all over the place.
Guerren Lagann: Good animation, good character designs, stupid nonsensical plot. A really fun anime if you turn your brain completely off and just watch the GIANT ROBOT FIGHTS.
Kill la Kill: Good animation, but I can’t stand the character designs and the plot is so physically painful I couldn’t watch past the fourth episode (I only watched in the first place because some idiot on youtube said it had interesting themes, which it does not). Do not recommend.
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team: Good anime, but the fanservice is too much for me. Just as I was getting invested in the plot (a treatment of the Gundam war from the perspective of the grunts on the surface), BOOM NAKED BOOBS HERE. No seriously, it came out out of nowhere so suddenly it gave me a heart attack. Mixed feelings on this anime.
Death Note: Good anime. A little melodramatic. I love L, ‘cause he’s basically me but smarter. Would recommend.
Bleach: SO MUCH POTENTIAL WASTED. Season 1 was GREAT, season 2 was ok, and then I couldn’t get past the Bount arc. Would recommend for the sake of the first two seasons.
Attack on Titan: two words: CRIMINALLY OVERRATED. It’s basically edgy trash with little depth or nuance, and a plot that seems ripped from Starship Troopers.
Assassination Classroom: Really good, actually. Well animated, decent character designs, a little weak on character development. Korosensei is my spirit animal (I’m a teacher). Goodness gracious, he embodies everything I want to be in terms of being a teacher, except perhaps his obsession with big boobs. Would recommend.
Psycho-Pass: Very cerebral, very interesting, very mesmerizing, has complex themes. Only downsides are that it’s basically a torture porn during the entire first half of the first season, which means you don’t want to eat before you watch it, and really only the main two protagonists and the main villain have good character designs. Would recommend for those who don’t mind seeing a lot of mutilated bodies and who like complex themes.
Now for shows that look like anime:
Avatar the Last Airbender: No surprise, this is a really good show. Minimal filler, and what filler there is doesn’t feel like filler. Good action, excellent handling of complex themes, good magic system. The plot starts out okay and then ramps up significantly after the season one finale. Where this show really shines, though, is it’s characters, who are almost all memorable and have great voice acting. Better yet, almost all of them get character development. Also a good exploration of eastern philosophy. Would recommend to those three people who haven’t seen it yet.
Legend of Korra: Good action, good art direction, really good animation. Not sure I like most of the characters, though. to be honest, Varrick, Zhu Li, Bumi, and Bo Lin are the only protagonists who I like in this show, besides of course the returning caste from the previous show. Season two was pretty bad, but the plot was very strong for seasons 1, 3, and 4. Some things felt very shoehorned. Almost all the villains were so incredibly compelling that they almost made up for the bland protagonists, and each one represented an individual theme, which was a very nice touch. Kinda screwed up some of the lore and the magic system, though. Mixed feelings on this one.
Dragon Prince: Season 1 was good, introduced a really cool magic system, nice complex themes, and a diverse and likable cast. The down side was that it suffered from some... questionable choices in animation style. Season 2, on the other hand, is... just really, really, really good. It has a good chance of becoming the next Avatar the Last Airbender if it keeps this up. It explores the magic system in fascinating detail, the themes are developed with a depth that rivals that of Korra, the plot has thickened, and the characters have developed significantly in likability and relatability. I highly recommend this one.
Voltron Legedary Defender: Starts out really good with Sakuga all around, kick-ass action scenes, and a decent plot. Unfortunately the shippers infested the fandom to the point where they were actually influencing the direction of the show, and the plot suffered as a result. Over the course of eight season, the show slowly decayed into a hollow shell. Mixed feelings on this one.
Ben 10: Kinda overrated, but still good. A nice watch on day you just want to relax and watch well-animated fights, but don’t expect it to make much sense.
Generator Rex: Criminally underrated. I love all the characters, all the action is great (even if it doesn’t make sense sometimes), animation is pretty good throughout, and it actually has really good technobabble. Honestly, it is my favorite show out of all of the ones on the list, despite its problems, just because of the really cool aesthetic. The main character starts as an obnoxious stereotypical Cartoon Network Protagonist, and develops into my second-favorite depiction of a paragon archetype. All the villains are memorable (even the silly ones). The first season has the best stand-alones (with some absolutely hilarious comedy episodes, dark edgy episodes, and fascinating pieces of science fiction); the second season has a season finale so good it made me cry, and the third season has by far the most interesting plot. I have a recommended watch order if you want to watch it.
Samurai Jack: Minimalist, very stylized, has some kick-ass fight sequences. Each episode has it’s own plot with not much in terms of overlap, but even the minor characters are memorable. My favorite is the Scotsman, but that is really no surprise if you watch the show. The Yin Yang dynamic between Jack and Aku is really interesting in its own right. Would highly recommend.
Teen Titans: Starts out mediocre, quickly gets good by the end of the first season, then ramps up to amazing by whichever season had the Trigon arc. Characters are almost as instantly recognizable as those in Hero Academia, and each one gets character development. It also has some standalone episodes that are almost as good as the standalones in Generator Rex. YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS SHOW.
Young Justice: Very similar to Generator Rex in many way. Memorable characters with good character development, good sci-fi, good action, and a similar season structure. It’s having a new third season right now which, despite the drop in animation quality due to limited funds, still manages to be engaging (especially the Vandal Savage origin episode and the three-episode arc devoted to Cyborg’s origin). Would recommend.
Transformers Animated: Criminally underrated, largely because of its... different animation style which is more like the animation for Teen Titans than the original G1 series, and the fact that they changed a lot of the lore. It has surprisingly complex themes, the voice acting is spot-on, and they do a good job of handling power creep. Though many of the protagonists start out kind of unlikable, they get really good development as the series goes on. By season 3, every single character has become so likable that it becomes legitimately distressing when they get hurt, and they play it to good effect. To give you an idea, when my sister saw the season finale of this show, she had an enormous melt-down at the end when her favorite character died (not telling who). It took three days to calm her down (the only way to do so was to introduce her to the idea of fan-fiction. I HIGHLY recommend this show.
Words of wisdom with Dr. Weekes
A wiseman once said to change the world we all must learn to change ourselves from that right there i gained the understanding of the 4 sides to the bigger picture and that is to love ourselves cuz if your not lucky enough to find the one you want if your not able to do what you love because of unfortunate circumstances, then change your perspective and mindset material. manifest your destiny by building your emotional intelligence , compassion and self worth with yourSELF 1rst you cannot teach something you have not yet learned and as human beings weve all been there one way or another and with that being said you cant do something that you have no knowledge of doing so before. So when you go out in the world today be like thoughts my friends (intangible until spoken off or spoken to)
Peace ✌🏾... untill we speak again "community"
- Pokémon, Sailor Moon, Naruto, Gintama, One Piece, Attack on Titan, Maid Sama!, Inuyasha, Sakamoto desu ga, The Devil is a Oart-Timer!, Hunter x Hunter, Boruto
6. Popular anime you didn’t like.
- At first I didn’t like One Piece, but I’ve grown to like it. It still isn’t my favorite, but I still watch it occasionally.
7. Anime you are currently watching.
- GINTAMAAA!! Waiting, re-watching, loving!, Boruto (very rarely), One Piece (Occasionally), Attack on Titan! Oh my god! It’s so good.
8. Anime character you are like the most.
- Kagura from Gintama, I feel like she is “one of the boys”, but from the inside she is reeally girly and cute, just like me : 3. Also I got her temper.
9. Favorite anime child
- Sarada Uchiha from Naruto/Boruto, such a sweetheart
10. Favorite anime animal sidekick.
- SADAHARU from Gintama!
11.  Anime you didn’t expect to like but did.
- Attack on Titan, I thought it would be too gory for me, but it just sucked me right in, I couldn’t fight it : D
12. Anime that should get more attention from others
- I’ll always answer Gintama
13. Funnest anime you have watched
- I’ll always answer Gintama, nothing will ever be as funny as Gintama’s shitty humour.
14. Saddest anime you have ever watched.
- Attack on Titan, Gintama
15. Anime you never get sick of watching.
- Gintama
16. 10 best animes you have watched.
- Well, I haven’t watched that many, but I can say my top 3
1. Gintama 2. Attack on Titan 3. Naruto
17. Biggest anime crush.
- Well...I like maaaany, so many. But my heart belongs to Okita Sougo from Gintama, he took Sasuke’s place like two-three years ago and I thought no one could overthrow him, but he did.
18.10 worst anime you have watched.
- Uh...I’ll have to skip this one, I’m very selective of what I watch, so I haven’t watched anything that bad xP Well, Boruto is sort of a let down, I’m not sure is it that necessary to continue the Naruto franchise.
19. Favorite anime ships.
- *rubs hands together and chuckles to herself
- OTP: Okikagu, they are made for each other, they complete each other in many aspects of life, I love them!
- Other ships: Sasusaku (my original otp but Okikagu overthrew them), Naruhina, Inosai, Shikatema, Luffyhancock, Gintsu, Kontae, Sakamutsu, Katsumatsu, Ereri, Inukago
20. Least favorite anime ships.
- I don’t want to wage shipwars, so I just say that I’m not feeling Ginkagu or Shinkagu because they feel like a family to me, just like Okikagu feels only like rivalry/friendship to others : ) I can respect that. Also incest ships aren’t my thing.
21. Anime that made you cry and when?
- Gintama (Sadaharu’s sacrifice...I fucking cried like a baby and screamed at my laptop, Shoguns death...I was shocked...utterly shocked)
22. Age you started watching anime/person who introduced you to it.
- I was 6 years old when Pokémon began airing as a children’s show, that’s my first step. Then I watched Naruto and Gintama on-off in my teens.
When I was 20 years old I dived into anime head first. I binged Naruto in like three months...I just ate it up. All the characters were familiar to me and I had always wanted to watch it from beginning to end. I also binged Inuyasha and ATLA (I know it’s not anime, I just love it so much!).
I had Naruto and my husband had One Piece. I wanted something to watch together and I Gintama popped into my mind (like hey! It was mad funny. I had only seen like three episodes but it stuck with me). Then we began to watch it binged it together from beginning to Farewell Shinsengumi Arc and now we are here...waiting for the end.
Also Attack on Titan is something we watch together. #bingewatch
23. Unpopular character you love.
- Uh...I don’t know. I’m a sucker for a pretty face and they tend to be the popular ones. So I don’t know : D
24. Popular character you hate.
- Hate is a strong word, but I’m not that hyped about Takasugi Shinsuke from Gintama, but I DO NOT HATE HIM! Just not my favorite : )
25. Anime you would recommend to someone who hates anime.
- I’ll always answer Gintama. For someone who hates anime, must have some sort of ideas of anime and why they hate it. Maybe some hate the ridiculous boobs or they just don’t get it. Well, Gintama doesn’t have gigantic boobs on every character and it’s okay if you don’t like anime, Gintama apparently hates every anime out there too.
Every parody is a sign of recogniziong : )
26. Manga you have read all the way to the end
- I don’t read manga but have read one called Cherry Juice
27. Anime you plan to watch in the future
- Oh my god! If I had the time I would definitely watch these:
- Yuri on Ice! (I know, shame on me for not watching it...I know), Free!, Black Butler, FMA (I’ve watched couple of episodes here and there, but not from beginning to end), Boku no Hero Academia (I already know I’m gonna love that red and white haired boy...Todoroki? And I already ship him with that black haired girl, Momo was it?), Persona 5 the anime when I find the binge time : ))), there are a lot of interesting ones out there, but here’s already quite a bunch for me (to fill the hole in my heart when Gintama ends)
28. Most upsetting moment in anime and why?
- Attack on Titan: So many horrible moments, but I SCREAMED when that one titan ate Erwin’s arm. The death of Squad Levi, The fucking first episode a.k.a. the death of Carla.
- Gintama: I got chills when Utsuro first appeared, everyone were so serious (even Sougo and Kagura, I remeber their eyes forever), the moments when Utsuro nearly killed Gintoki (first fight), Yamazaki (second fight) and Shinpachi (first fight), the moment when Utsuro’s mask broke, oh my god Gintoki’s face!!!, and when Sadaharu literally began to disappear (my heart hurts just by thinking about it), Shoguns assassination (I still can’t believe it)
29. Anime that deserves another season.
- Gintama xD hehe. I think Maid Sama! I would have loved to see it till the end. Sakamoto desu ga absolutely and The Devil is a Part-Timer! These short gems deserve so much more!
30. One anime conclusion you would change.
- Okay, I haven’t watched Bleach, BUT my husband has and for him, I would end Bleach with Aizen arc and make Ichigo and Rukia the canon couple.
- Also, Sorachi-sensei...Imma gonna have to change my answer on this one if you don’t make Okikagu canon...pretty please!
This was so much fun! Sorry for rambling a bit : D hope you enjoyed reading my opinions!
My problem with Super-sons.
Okay. Listen. Super-sons isn't a bad book. Don't even think I'm implying that. However....I have found myself care a lot less for it then expected.
Like it doesn't take a genius to see that I absolutely adore Damian and I also really enjoyed Jon in the serieses that proceded Super-sons.
So naturally I was excited for it and I actually really loved the first issue of it. I loved the groundwork they layed in Superman and I was very excited for it to progress but......
It kind of left me very underwhelmed for several reasons.
1 the art. At first I tried to justify it by saying 'maybe they just want to give Damian more asian features' but by now it's very apparent that this is just another case of DC's whitewashing bleach. Which is getting even worse with them portraying Talia, who is vilanized yet again because DC hates us Arab women apparently, as dark skined. This is some very bad case of colorism and should not be happening in 2018!
2. The plot was meh. I mean, yeah it's above average. The writing is really good. But after the first arc everthing just kinda lost focus. The story was told throughout a ton of diffrent titles which frankly made everything a bit confusing and spread the whole thing out a bit too thin. I think we can mostly thank DC as a bussiness for this. It's great to see how it's back to it's shady tactics which value money over narrative merit.
Only took then like half a month after the launch of rebirth.
3. The titles that are suppose to support this book are bad(with a few exceptions). Especially Teen Titans. It would have been one thing if Super-sons was a self contained thing but sadly it's not. Teen Titans is practically it's sibling comic. It's embarrassing ugly asshole of a sibling you wouldn't want to introduce to somebody you would like to take interest in you, but you got to anyways because your mom is paying your salery and hopes to somehow elevate her ugly kid with this method.
4. Robin: Son of Batman was simply the better book and Superman: Lois and Clark had the more interesting Jon characterization. Not to mention that the current Superman also is doing a better job at writing Jon and making his story interesting and commpelling. A lot of my favorite moments between Damian and Jon actually were in that book rather then in their shared title.
Both R:sob and S:L&C had extremly interesting premisses as one is Damian's personal quest for redemption and lead up to a arc that should have been about self forgivness if DC didn't fuck that up royalty, with beautiful art, panel work and atmosphere. Everything about that titel was unique and exciting. With the exception of the Robin war tie in the entire story had a sense of meloncholy, adventure and mystery. It's a deep character study with a sad but not depressing tone to it. The story isn't about Damian being broken it's about him healing and it's truly extremly underrated.
Meanwhile S:L&C also is a wonderfully atmospheric story about two refuges from another world who are trying to raise their son. It's a dense narrative which mostly focuses on Lois of all people as she and Clark addapt to their new roles while trying to protect their son. You really feel how much the issolation they put themselves into affects them as they are forced to see loved ones and family they saw die again while not being able to interact with them. It's heartfelt and has very interesting themes of isolation and feeling lost which are very much a staple of a lot of Superman stories but due to the shift in narrative focus it's subverted enough to be truly interesting.
It also establishes Jon's character very well and shows us his own struggles as he doesn't seem to fit in with his school mates that much. It also establishes his curiousity and inteligence which are reminisent of Lois rather then Clark. The more time they dedicated to Jon the more you could see that he wasn't just a carbon copy of his dad.
It's a rich story with deep compelling characters and high stakes.
Meanwhile Super-sons is just...those two being friends, not even becoming just being friends who slowly become even better friends. Like everyone is talking about Damina's character development and I just stare at these panels and think. He already had that. No seriously a lot of the things people praise in Super-sons is character development Damian already had in R:sob and quiet frankly I won't give DC flowers for reheating stuff and selling it as new.
I mean to be fair there were hints that Damian would have a arc about wanting to be more like a normal kid which would have been a interesting and compelling plot that could have employed both character's differences and similarities to craft a meaningful narrative about feeling like outcast and seaking comfort in eachother, but again, the focus was drawn away from that for way too long due to everything else going on in the other comics. Speaking of, most of Jon's interesting character development also happened outside of that book.
I mean it's still fun and for what it is it's wirten extremly well. I can easily see why so many people care so much about it, especially if they didn't read either of the predecessors of that comic, but personally I really just would rather have something more like R:sob with higher stakes, a more meaningful narrative and deeper character study.
And I am kind of glad it's ending prematurly to hopefully be picked up again with a new found focus. It just seemed like the comic had a really great story it wanted to tell us but it just never got the chance to. I think they started the comic too early and should have settled with a mini series until DC's overall climate cooled down and there would be more room for them to do what they really wanted to do.
But hey that's just my opinon.
JUSTICE LEAGUE: EASTER EGGS, TRIVIA, AND THINGS YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED
Disclaimer: I did not find all of these easter eggs myself. I watched many Youtube videos and read many articles and gathered the best easter eggs or references I could find and I compiled them into one organized post. Also, this post will definitely contain spoilers from the movie. Enjoy!
GREEN LANTERN
Green Lantern is one of the founding members of the Justice League in the comics, and it was widely speculated that he would have a cameo in the film or in the post-credits scenes (especially since there’s a planned film in the DCEU called Green Lantern Corps); even though we didn’t get that in the film, when Diana was explaining to Bruce about Steppenwolf’s origins and the Mother Boxes, we see a Green Lantern get killed in battle. The Green Lantern we see fighting Steppenwolf also wears a cape, which could be an homage to Alan Scott, the first Green lantern in the comics. This easter egg officially confirms the existence of the Green Lanterns in the DCEU films and foreshadows Green Lantern Corps (2020).
Tumblr media
STEPPENWOLF AND DARKSEID’S RELATIONSHIP
The villain of Justice League was Steppenwolf, who is minion to the villain Darkseid. In the comics, Steppenwolf is Darkseid’s uncle, wheras in the movie, it’s revealed that Steppenwolf is Darkseid’s nephew.
CLARK AND JONATHAN KENT’S GRAVES
When The Flash and Cyborg are digging up Superman's coffin you can see the tombstone next to his reads Kent, referencing that he was buried next to his father who died in the Man of Steel movie.
Tumblr media
JOHN WESLEY SHIPP
When attempting to break into the Kryptonian ship, Barry’s fake credentials show the name Wesley Shipp, which is a reference to John Wesley Shipp, who played the Flash in the tv show from the 1990s.
Tumblr media
DO YOU BLEED?
One of the many callbacks to Batman v Superman is the line “Do you bleed?”. In BvS, Batman says it to Superman during their first encounter, and now in Justice League, Superman says it back to Batman during their fight.
Tumblr media
AQUAMAN AND SUPERMAN HAVE MET BEFORE
Jason Momoa who plays Aquaman has revealed that in the DCEU, Aquaman and Superman have crossed paths before; in Man of Steel, there’s a scene where Clark almost drowns after saving people from the exploding oil rig, and apparently Aquaman pushed him back to the surface.
Tumblr media
RED SKY
In the final battle against Steppenwolf, the Mother Boxes are united and the sky turns red; in the DC Comics universe, a red sky symbolizes a time of crisis - this first happened in “Crisis on Infinite Earths” in 1985.
SCENES STRAIGHT FROM THE COMICS
The plot of the movie draws inspiration from DC’s New 52 Comics, with scenes in the movie taken right from the comics and put into the movie such as “Aquaman talking to fish” and Batman’s first fight with the parademon, which was from the comic story arc “Origin” written by Geoff Johns, who is also the co-head of DC Films.
GAME OF THRONES CONNECTIONS
3 actors from Game of Thrones are in Justice League:
Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) plays Aquaman
Ciaran Hinds (Mance Rayder) played Steppenwolf through motion capture
Michael McElhatton (Roose Bolton) plays an unnamed criminal fighting against Wonder Woman
Tumblr media
BLACK MASK
During the same fight against the parademon, there’s a rooftop with the company name “Janus” on it, which is the name of the company run by the villain Black Mask.
Tumblr media
ARES AND ZEUS
The “gods” in Wonder Woman’s storyline and backstory are seen in the flashback battle - including Ares (played by David Thewlis) and Zeus, who zapped the Mother Boxes apart.
Tumblr media
THE PENGUIN
During a conversation between Bruce and Alfred, Alfred says he misses the days when their biggest threats were “exploding, wind-up penguins”, which is a reference to the famous Batman villain, the Penguin.
Tumblr media
THE SPECTRE
At the Gotham City Police Department, Alfred talks to Crispus Allen, who in the comics goes on to become the cosmic entity “The Spectre”.
Tumblr media
ACE CHEMICALS
When Batman talks to Commissioner Gordon on the rooftop, in the background you can spot a sign for “ACE Chemicals” which is where the Joker fell into a vat of chemicals that bleached his skin (in Suicide Squad we see a clip of Harley and Joker in ACE Chemicals).
Tumblr media
DOOMSDAY CLOCK
Bruce makes a comment about the “Doomsday clock having a snooze button”, which is a reference to the Watchmen, and “Doomsday Clock” is the title to the sequel of Watchmen, written by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank.
Tumblr media
WAYNE MANOR / HALL OF JUSTICE
At the end of the movie, Bruce Wayne returns to his family home, Wayne Manor, and tells Alfred they’ll be needing a table and six chairs around it (or maybe more..) alluding to the fact that it could be the “Hall of Justice” aka the Justice League headquarters.
Tumblr media
BARRY & HENRY ALLEN
At the end of the movie, Barry gets a job as a forensic scientist, motivated by the desire to clear his father’s name (when Barry was a child, his mother Nora was murdered and his father Henry was charged with the crime). Henry Allen is held at “Iron Heights Penitentiary”, which is where most of the Flash’s enemies end up in the comics such as Captain Cold and Weather Wizard.
Bonus fact: In Justice League, Henry Allen is played by Billy Crudup, who played Dr. Manhattan in the Watchmen movie, a DC Comics film also directed by Zack Snyder (though not a part of the DCEU).
Tumblr media
BARRY’S HOME - BLACKPINK AND RICK AND MORTY
When Bruce goes to recruit Barry to join the League, the song “As If It’s Your Last” by K-POP band BlackPink can be heard, and an episode of Rick and Morty can be seen playing in the background (season 1 episode 9); the scene shows Rick & Summer defeating the Devil, which mirrors the actions of the League in this film, as Steppenwolf is considered an allegory for Lucifer.
Tumblr media
GORILLA GRODD
In the same scene, Barry says he known “gorilla sign language” which is a reference to the Flash villain “Gorilla Grodd”, who is an extremely intelligent gorilla with psychic powers.
Tumblr media
PRINCE AND DAVID BOWIE
A newspaper article can be seen remembering the deaths of Prince and David Bowie alongside Superman.
Tumblr media
THE KRYPTONIAN SHIP
The Kryptonian ship which plays a big role in the film, is the same one that General Zod arrives in in Man of Steel, Lex Luthor created Doomsday in Batman v. Superman; we also understand from the movie that the ship has been taken from LexCorp by STAR Labs.
Tumblr media
VICTOR AND GOTHAM CITY UNIVERSITY
Victor got his powers after suffering an accident while he was a student and football player at Gotham City University. A scene was cut from the movie that showed him in a GCU jacket and his days as a football player. Bonus Fact: In Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition, we see a scene of a football game between Gotham City University and Metropolis, with GCU losing 58-0, and they’re doing so badly because Victor isn’t on their team anymore due to his accident.
Tumblr media
BOOYAH
After the fight with Steppenwolf, Cyborg says “Booyah!”, which is his signature catchphrase in the Teen Titans animated series.
JOHN WILLIAMS SCORE
Danny Elfman used a bit of Superman’s classic score by John Williams but “gave it a darker twist” in the film right before Superman fights the League at his monument.
16TH ANNIVERSARY OF ANIMATED SERIES
This film was released in the US on November 17th, the same day the animated series Justice League (2001) first aired sixteen years earlier.
1978 JIMMY OLSEN CAMEO
Marc McClure, who plays Jimmy Olsen in the 1978 Superman movie has a cameo in the movie as the police guard in the jail when Barry visits his dad.
Tumblr media
SUPERMAN V. THE FLASH - 1ST POST CREDITS SCENE
The first mid-credits scene shows Superman racing against The Flash to see who is faster; this has been a subject of many comic book stories with the answer never being truly resolved and always being “up in the air”.
Tumblr media
LEGION OF DOOM - 2ND POST CREDITS SCENE
The second post credits scene shows Lex Luthor to have broken out of Arkham Asylum and aboard a yacht with Deathstoke (aka Slade Wilson), with Lex telling Slade they should form “a league of their own”. This is a reference to the “Legion of Doom” or the “Injustice League” , a group of supervillains from DC Comics including Lex Luthor, Deathstroke, Riddler, Braniac, Solomon Grundy, Sinestro, Scarecrow, and more. Bonus Fact: Lex Luthor’s look in this scene is more true to how he looks in the comics as opposed to how he looked in Batman v Superman.
Tumblr media
CLARK’S FUNERAL OUTFIT
We see that Clark was buried in a navy blue suit, white shirt, and red tie - this is one of Clark’s iconic outfits from the early comics.
Tumblr media
THE ICONIC SUPERMAN POSE
Another iconic Clark Kent outfit is the tan trenchcoat, glasses, and hat, and at the very end of the film, the first time in the DCEU, we see Clark wear this outfit and pull open his shirt to reveal his Superman outfit - an iconic Superman scene.
Best Anime Available on Netflix 2019
8. Kill La Kill (2013)
1 season, 25 episodes | IMDb: 8/10
If I had to sum up Kill la Kill in two words, they’d be “fashion battle.” Broadly speaking, its story is pretty much beat for beat what you’d expect from a series about a magical teen — developing powers, last-minute turns of the tide — but the specifics are just bonkers enough to keep that from being a weakness Which are some of the best anime on Netflix. At Honnouji Academy, clothes bestow supernatural abilities on their wearer, turning the usual high school hierarchies into a battleground. At the center of it all is transfer student Ryuko Matoi, who’s come to Honnouji in search of her father’s killer. Her sidekick, a sentient sailor outfit, puts her on the level of the school’s student council, allowing her to tussle with them in her quest for the truth. More modest viewers be warned: the series’ focus on clothing also lends itself to a significant amount of fanservice. As the series progresses, the outfits get skimpier and skimpier until there’s barely anything there at all.
7. Fate/Zero (2011)
2 seasons, 28 episodes | IMDb: 8.3/10
For those looking for darker fare, Fate/Zero should hit the spot. As may be obvious from the fact that the driving event behind the whole series is called “the Fourth Holy Grail War,” it’s heavy stuff. The war is a contest between a select group of mages and their attendant spirits. (The spirits, in one of the series’ strangest gambits, range from Alexander the Great to King Arthur.) They compete for the power of the Grail, which will grant a wish to each of the winning pair. The resulting assortment of competitors doubles as a mix of ideals and morals, and the shifting balance is one of the best aspects of the show. Though there’s a fair amount of comedy mixed in, it’s quite a bleak series, with a death count to rival Game of Thrones and eldritch horrors to contend with, to boot.
6. Castlevania (2017)
1 season, 5 episodes | IMDb: 8/10
Even those unfamiliar with anime are likely to have heard of Castlevania, as the franchise is one of the jewels in Konami’s crown. The anime series is produced by Netflix, and boasts a voice cast including Graham McTavish as Count Dracula, who vows revenge against Wallachia after the death of his wife, and Richard Armitage as Trevor Belmont, the last of a clan of monster hunters, who leads the fight against him. (Matt Frewer also features in the cast, which should be a treat for any fellow Max Headroom enthusiasts.) There’s blood a-plenty, and a nice balance between monster and man as per most gothic horror stories — as well as a somewhat romantic aspect, as Dracula is portrayed as a sympathetic villain. The series is also just gorgeously animated, and with a first season of only four episodes, well worth your time.
5. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)
1 season, 51 episodes | IMDb: 8.6/10
Fullmetal fans and newbies alike are somewhat spoiled for choice when it comes to Netflix’s offerings: Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are both available on the streaming service, alongside the recent live-action film. But we’re here for anime, so we’ll just discuss the first two. For the purposes of this list, we’re counting both series as one entity, as Fullmetal Alchemist is a seminal property, but not to fear, I’m not about to leave you in the dark. Both Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are adaptations of the original manga, which tells the story of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, as they search for the Philosopher’s Stone. In an attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy, they’ve been transformed. Edward has lost his leg, and sacrifices his arm as well in order to save Alphonse’s soul, binding it to a suit of armor. The Stone is their ticket to restoration. The more recent Brotherhood hews much more closely to the manga, whereas Fullmetal Alchemist essentially turns into an original series about halfway through. In the end, they complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses, but if you have to pick just one, I’d go for Brotherhood as the “canon” experience.
4. Rurouni Kenshin (1996)
3 seasons, 95 episodes | IMDb: 8.5/10
Like most other entries on this list, Rurouni Kenshin was adapted from a manga series (which appeared in the legendary Shōnen Jump magazine). The title refers to its protagonist, Himura Kenshin, a former killing machine who is now committed to helping others to try to atone for his sins. Of course, his love of peace is challenged when it becomes apparent that someone else has assumed his former mantle as an assassin and plans to throw the Meiji Government into chaos. The characters are all well-defined and well-developed, with the biggest hook being the contrast between Kenshin’s apparent happy-go-lucky attitude and vow never to kill again, and what we know him to be capable of due to his reputation. He’s also a walking example of the way the series focuses on period to tell a story rather than using it simply as set dressing: the show takes place during a transition period in Japanese history, and Kenshin is just as much in flux.
3. Inuyasha (2000)
2 seasons, 167 episodes | IMDb: 7.9/10
Inuyasha is the rare franchise that manages to strike a balance between cute and horrifying. To liken it to a current pop culture phenomenon, it’s similar to Outlander, in that its basic plot sounds like something out of a romance novel: a young woman, Kagome, is sent back in time, and must then contend with forces beyond her reckoning, all while getting to know a rambunctious man (well, in this case, half dog-demon), Inuyasha, to whom she seems to be mysteriously bound. There’s plenty of time-travel fluff to go around, but in Inuyasha’s case, it’s augmented by nightmare fuel in the form of a host of demons searching for the magic jewel in Kagome’s possession. The centipede monster in the first episode sets the bar for how unsettling these monsters look, as well as the show’s overall structure as a sort of monster-of-the-week affair. To that end, the show can get a little repetitive, but the cast is uniformly great (including Inuyasha’s antihero brother Sesshomaru, who I think I can confidently say is “the hot one”), and the balance between fun and horror is a rare find.
2. Attack on Titan (2013)
1 season, 51 episodes | IMDb: 8.8/10
Since the manga began in 2009, Attack on Titan has become something of a cultural sensation. At present, only the first season of the anime, which was produced in 2013, is available on Netflix, but it works on its own. (It’s also notably a series that benefits from being available to binge rather than view doled out in segments, as seeing it all in one fell swoop — or a few swoops — makes its repeated cliffhangers less obvious and thereby more tolerable.) Broadly speaking, it’s almost a mecha series, as the driving force of the plot involves fighting giant creatures (the Titans of the title), an enterprise that only starts to become truly tenable when it transpires that one of the human characters, Eren, is a Titan, himself. The difference is aesthetic: the Titans are awful to look at, as they are basically giant humans with their skin stripped away, and their muscles contorted to look as terrifying as possible. As for why it all works, it ultimately comes down to the focus on the coming-of-age stories and how each character’s arc dials into the anxieties that are part and parcel of growing up and dealing with loss. The series is also fairly brutal when it comes to reflecting the realities of living in what is effectively a war zone, as every character is fair game when it comes to Titan fodder. Equal parts steampunk romp and war story, Attack on Titan is one of the best anime series in the game.
1. Bleach (2004)
3 seasons, 366 episodes | IMDb: 8.2/10 Bleach has it all. It’s stylish as hell, it’s incredibly well-acted, it’s genre-fluid, and on top of that, it’s well-written. Though it starts out fairly simply, it builds and builds, transforming into an epic that more than earns its place in the pantheon of great anime. The story begins when Ichigo Kurasaki, a high schooler capable of seeing ghosts, takes on the duties of a Soul Reaper in order to protect his family.  It’s a transition that the show handles beautifully, and does again and again as it progresses. The world of Bleach (and the mythology involved) just keeps getting bigger, without ever falling short, or falling flat. The series is also impossible to peg as one genre or another, as there are elements of almost everything baked in. It’s an epic, and unmissable as such. Creator Tite Kubo’s style is just the cherry on top of the cake.
Aqualad Arrives As Teen Titans Starts to Feel Like, Well, Teen Titans
Aqualad’s fortunes in the DC Universe seem inexorably, and inextricably, tied to those of his animated counterpart.
Introduced in 2010 in “Brightest Day” #4, at about the same time “Young Justice” made its television premiere, Jackson Hyde was a New Mexico teenager raised by his parents to fear water in a veiled attempt to hide him from his true father — who, as on the Cartoon Network series, is revealed to be Black Manta. Informed of his parentage, Aqualad teamed with Aquaman, Mera and Aquagirl to defeat the classic villain, and was poised to join the Teen Titans — at least, until “Flashpoint” came along. When DC relaunched its superhero universe in late 2011 with the New 52, Jackson was nowhere to be found, and with the cancellation of “Young Justice” in 2013, it appeared unlikely he would crop up anytime soon.
RELATED: Who’s the Best Robin? Damian Wayne, Unsurprisingly, Has the Answer
But there he was in May 2016’s “DC Universe: Rebirth #1,” published almost three years to the day after the Season Two finale of “Young Justice,” which until relatively recently looked like the end of the fan-favorite cartoon. Sure, it was only for two, somewhat-incongruous, panels, but they nonetheless signaled a significant change to Jackson Hyde.
Jackson Hyde, in DC Universe: Rebirth #1
And then he disappeared again, until, following the announcement of the long-awaited third season of “Young Justice,” DC revealed Aqualad would at last resurface this week in “Teen Titans” #6.
RELATED: “Deathstroke” to Cross Over With “Titans,” “Teen Titans” in May Event
Written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Khoi Pham and Wade Von Grawbadger, the first part of “The Rise of Aqualad” story arc gives the character a proper introduction to Rebirth continuity, where his bleached, close-cropped hair makes him more closely resemble his animated analog. Here, like the version from DC’s pre-“Flashpoint” universe, Jackson is a teen in New Mexico eager to test his superhuman abilities even as (in this case) his mother seeks to keep them secret while fulfilling a promise — to herself, she insists, unconvincingly — to protect her son.
From Teen Titans #6, by Benjamin Percy, Khoi Pham and Wade Von Grawbadger
But unlike the previous incarnation, who had a girlfriend and a budding crush on Aquagirl, in Rebirth Aqualad is gay, and has a closeted boyfriend. Make that had a closeted boyfriend.
Referenced in his fleeting appearance in the “DC Universe: Rebirth” one-shot, Jackson’s sexual orientation and complicated romantic relationship are reinforced in “Teen Titans” #6, where he bristles at pressure from his mother and his boyfriend Kenny to hide who he really is. His longings to be open about both his powers and his sexuality are intertwined in a familiar metaphor that’s lent poignancy when a discussion with Kenny about living their own lives shifts abruptly as a TV reporter’s tour of Titans Tower goes viral, inspiring Jackson to demonstrate his water-bending hydrokinesis for his boyfriend. Make that ex-boyfriend.
From Teen Titans #6, by Benjamin Percy, Khoi Pham and Wade Von Grawbadger
Freaked out by the display, Kenny decides that rather than it’s time for them to go their separate ways. We’re left to wonder whether the abrupt breakup is actually in response to Jackson’s abilities, or if it owes more to his rapidly changing expectations for their relationship. But whatever the case, it serves its purpose in the story by spurring Jackson to head to San Francisco (he’s certainly not the first gay teen to do so), and to Titans Tower, “to escape this prison … and start something new.”
That journey of self-discovery, and Jackson’s embrace of what makes him “different,” begins, not so coincidentally, as the new incarnation of the Teen Titans grapples with a new mystery and, ultimately, a new threat: King Shark (he looms large on the cover of “Teen Titans” #8, so it isn’t really a spoiler). More importantly, however, it comes just as the team truly begins to feel like the Teen Titans.
From Teen Titans #6, by Benjamin Percy, Khoi Pham and Wade Von Grawbadger
After an opening arc (plus a “Rebirth” one-shot) devoted to bringing the team together, and establishing Damian Wayne as their leader and benefactor, Issue 6 focuses more on personalities and interpersonal relationships, those elements that “Teen Titans,” at its best, is known for. That’s no more evident than in the dynamic between the wise-cracking Beast Boy, still obsessed with fame even after all these years, and the deadly serious Robin, who have already emerged as perfect foils — a relationship only enhanced by the presence of Damian’s dragon bat Goliath.
A few weeks have elapsed since the events of the previous issues, during which time these Titans (Robin and Beast Boy, joined by Starfire, Kid Flash and Raven) have stopped the Royal Flush Gang, established a reputation for themselves in San Francisco, and settled into their roles. After a rocky beginning, they’re at ease with each other, which allows for moments of humor, and even a couple of sly nods to the animated “Teen Titans Go!” (After first testing “To me, my Titans!” in “Nightwing” #10, Damian apparently hasn’t settled on a rallying cry just yet.) That makes it an ideal time to introduce a new, unpredictable element into the mix, and Aqualad fits the bill.
Jackson Hyde is a neophyte with a mysterious — although, granted, not too mysterious to readers — past who’s unsure of himself and his abilities. He’s bound to provide a stark contrast to the highly trained Robin, the cynical Raven, the carefree Beast Boy, and so on. Although Kid Flash is a relative newcomer to superheroics, Jackson approaches the Teen Titans utter outsider with a lot to learn about their world, and about himself.
He won’t immediately discover much about the latter, though, as “The Rise of Aqualad” is a two-part story — a rarity in modern mainstream comic books — that’s followed by the “Lazarus Contract” crossover with “Deathstroke” and “Titans.” However, it’s a safe bet those answers will come fast and furious beginning with “Teen Titans” #9, the first part of the ominously titled “Blood of the Manta.” Maybe by then one of the biggest mysteries of this week’s issue, and decades’ worth of Teen Titans stories, will also be solved: What happens to Garfield Logan’s costume when he changes form.
From Teen Titans #6, by Benjamin Percy, Khoi Pham and Wade Von Grawbadger
Luckily, the Son of Batman is on the case.
“Teen Titans” #6, written by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Khoi Pham and Wade Von Grawbadger, is on sale now.
The post Aqualad Arrives As Teen Titans Starts to Feel Like, Well, Teen Titans appeared first on CBR.
