Book Review
Title: The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic Author: Linsey Hall
Series: Charming Cove, book #1
No. of Pages: 356
ISBN: 9781648820311
Synopsis:
So here’s the deal—I’m a magical disaster. A witch from a family of witches, and the only one whose magic blows up in her face. Which is why I came up with my rules…
1. Never get involved with magic
2. If you must get involved, do not enter a competition to win the biggest magical fortune in England
3. And definitely don't fall for Callan Hawthorne, the sexy billionaire mage who you've hated for years
So how the heck do I end up in a situation that promises to break all those rules? It's the only way to save Seaside Spells, my family’s magical potion shop.
But it’s cool. When I go back home to Charming Cove—a village of ancient pubs and foul-mouthed familiars—I will totally ignore Witch Weekly’s Sexiest Man of the Year. I’ll win the competition, and if I’m lucky, I won’t turn myself into a toad in the process.
This'll be fine. It’ll all be fine.
Riiiight. The Modern Girl’s Guide to Magic is a fun, frothy romantic comedy full of laughter, love, and magical hijinks. It’s the first in a series of stand alone romances set in the seaside village of Charming Cove.

What did I think of the book?
The Modern Girl's Guide to Magic by Linsey Hall My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4 of 5 stars Romance Rules for Werewolves left me in a mood to read some more witchy stories, so I decided to pick up the first book of the Charming Cove standalone series. This is a very chill, cozy, and wholesome book with a neat concept. The beginning was funny and seemed like a stronger start than the werewolf story in the series, it just made more sense and didn’t feel as rushed. I enjoyed all the stuff about the plants in the book, the way the MC came into her own as the story went on was great, and I immediately fell in love with Boris the badger familiar just as much as I did with Poa from the third book. These familiars are so wonderful! Though I enjoyed this book a bit more than the third one, and the pacing was a lot better, the climax of the story sort of fizzled and didn't hold enough impact for me. But in saying that, there are enough twists and turns to keep things fun, so this would still be a great book to pick up to have a leisurely read on the weekend and relax with. Favorite character/s: Boris, the badger familiar. The little guy was a treat, along with Catrina. That girl's scenes were always fun to read, and her confidence in her own magic was inspiring. Callan and Aria, for how sweet they were when they worked together to accomplish things. What drew me to this book? The beautiful cover and the witchy concept. Stars: 4/5 stars because the dialogue was a bit rough, and sometimes the perspectives didn't seem optimal for the part of the story at times (as in, some scenes could have been better from Aria's perspective but were instead told from Callan's and vice versa, not always but sometimes), but other than that, it was a pretty nice read. Aemond took a deep breath as he stood in front of your bakery. ‘The Faun Cottage’ was the name of your store. The display window was decorated with beautiful green leaves and antique books which served to hold cakes and baskets of bread.
He was dressed in a light white shirt with a leather jacket, black jeans, and super comfortable Doctor Martens, which he wears almost every day. His long hair was tied in a low ponytail.
Looking down at the watch on his wrists, he saw it was 2 pm already. “Here goes nothing,” he murmurs as he walks into the bakery. “You better be right, Aegon.”
The scent of fresh bread and coffee along with a sweet herbal smell hit his nose like a train. Inside the shop, it was warm and cozy. Green vines are climbing the walls into the ceiling and some ancient runes are painted on the stone walls which looks like a mix of cottage core with Celtic/Viking vibe. A faint medieval music played in the background. It looks like something from an ancient era.
There are some people seated eating their food, others reading or working while drinking their tea or coffee.
“Mommy! Mommy! My Prince is here!” Emily’s voice echoed through the shop, grabbing his attention. This time she was dressed in a simple brown dress with some hand-painted runes on it. Her black hair was braided, and two small antlers rested on her head.
Aemond smiles down at her and kneels to shake her tiny hand. “Hello, Emily.” He greets her gently. “And what do you suppose to be today?”
She gives him a little twirl and grins. “I’m a druid! I talk to animals and cure people's booboos with my magic!” The girl grabs his hand and pulls him towards the door behind the counter, saying a quick hello to the guy who was attending to a client.
Aemond chuckles and lets the girl guide him. “Hmm, I see.”
Emily opens the door and leads him inside. It was an office by the looks and by the desk full of papers and a laptop, stood a very stressed woman.
“Mommy! Look who’s here!” Emily chirps happily.
You looked up from your papers and gave him a tired smile. “Aemond... I’m happy to see you. Please take a seat.” You try to make your office table more presentable, putting all the paperwork in cases. “Sorry for the mess. It’s been a busy day. Maria needed the day off so I took over her work and... it didn’t go well.”
Aemond sat on the wooden chair in front of you while Emily went to the corner to play with her plush animals. “It’s no problem... Here’s my papers, all the training I did.” He gives you the case. “By the way, you have a lovely bakery. Very creative.”
The grin you gave him made Aemond’s heart almost burst out of his chest. Your eyes brightened at his compliment and how the dimples on your cheeks made you look so cute and innocent.
“Thank you! It was a lot of work to make it the way I imagined but it was worth it.” You say taking a seat on your chair. “So, shall we start with the interview?”
Aemond nods.
“Okay! So, your brother said you had experience with children. Your nephews, right?” Aemond nods again.
“Yes, my sister's children. Twins, a girl, Jaehaera, and a boy, Jaehaerys, of 8 years old, and toddler of 2 years old, Maelor.” Aemond smiled gently at the thought of his nephews.
You took notice of his gentleness as he talked about his nephews, which made you feel more relaxed with the idea of him taking care of Emily.
“They all have beautiful names.” You speak. “I’m not going to lie but it seems you are perfect for Emily. You have basic first aid training and CPR certifications.” You look down and read his papers. “Also, it seems Emily is already attached to you.”
You nod towards your daughter, who has her gaze fixed on Aemond while she plays. Aemond grinned at her which made the girl giggle and run towards him, showing him her favorite plush animal.
You pull up the documents for him to sign and put them in front of him. “It seems you got the job! You can read the agreement and then sign down here.” You smile. “I drive her to her school every morning. So, 3 pm you can go pick her up and she is all yours until 7 pm when I get home.”
Aemond nods and signs the paper. Opening the drawer beside you, you take a small notebook along with a key.
“Here.” You give him the book and key. “In here you will find all her allergies, her school, and our apartment address. That’s the key to our home.”
Aemond takes the book and the key from you, his pale fingers brushing gently against yours. “Thank you, Y/n.”
The way your name rolled through his tongue made your loins curl in a familiar feeling. You cough and look down to your laptop, a faint blush adorns your cheeks. Get a grip, Y/n!
There’s a small pregnant silence between you too. Aemond admires the way your face flushes so easily. Even tired, you look beautiful.
“Huh... Well! Ready for your first day?” You stand up and smile, trying to end the awkward silence.
Aemond also stood up, looking down at a very excited Emily. “Ready as I can be.” He gently grabs the girl's hand while putting her backpack on his shoulder and walks out of the office with you following close behind.
You kneel and give a big kiss on your daughter's cheek, making her giggle excitedly. “Have fun and behave.”
“Yes, mommy.” She grins and kisses your nose.
As you stand up, Aemond quickly pulls his wallet out and takes his business card. “I completely forgot to you give my card.” He says with an apologetic gaze. “My phone number is there in case you need something.”
You nod and take his business card. Emily pulls Aemond’s hand and jumps up and down. “Can I have an ice cream on our way home? Pretty please?”
Aemond looks in panic at you to which you laugh. “Yes, but only this time. Alright?”
“Yippe!” Your daughter squeals happily and pulls Aemond’s hand again. “C’mon! C’mon! Let’s go!” Aemond chuckles and lets the girl guide him while waving a small goodbye at you.
You waved back and watched them turn around the block, disappearing out of sight. You feel tears stinging in the corner of your eyes, the feeling of your daughter's absence drives you to panic.
“Deep breath, Y/n.” You whisper to yourself. “She’s going to be okay.”
Taking a deep breath, you look down at the business card in your hand. Your eyes widen as you see a familiar red logo. A three-headed dragon.
“Wait! He’s THE Aemond Targaryen??!!”
I hope you guys like this chapter!! Feel free to like, comment or reblog!

Media Recommendations for Harry Potter Fans
Alright. So you’re a Harry Potter fan. You’re a Harry Potter fan because you love Harry Potter and you love the community you’ve built with your fellow fans, but J. K. Rowling is using her vast fortune to harm people and she says asinine shit about how anyone who likes Harry Potter agrees with her transphobia, and you know that’s not true, but maybe you’re wondering if there’s a different fandom you and your friends could go to, where if nothing else the creator isn’t using a massive platform and massive amounts of money to harm transgender people. This is a guide for you.
You really wish you could have a Harry Potter that’s just not Harry Potter. You want a magical school and aerial sports games and fighting a tyrant and the equivalent of Hogwarts Houses.
Check out The Owl House. It’s about a girl named Luz who wanders into another world and attends a magic school.
You can watch it on YouTube: Link.
You like the idea of a modern-ish fantasy book series (British, pre-Smart Phone technology age) with a big, rambling world to play around in.
Check out The Chronicles of Chestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones. It’s set across a multiverse and follows the lives and trials of young magicians.
Start with Charmed Life, which can be purchased on Amazon: Link.
You want a fantasy series with chosen ones, suffering, and sacrifice where anyone can die. Also, you like magical animal companions.
Check out The Last Herald Mage Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey, which is part of the broader Valdemar series. It’s about the life of Valdemar’s greatest – and last – Herald-mage.
You can find it on Amazon: Link.
You love Harry Potter for the mysteries. You’d be fine with something for a bit of an older demographic, and you love supernatural horror and angst. You want to see the protagonist go through it. But you’d also love it if there was something akin to the Hogwarts Houses that you could define yourself by.
Check out The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir or The Magnus Archives. The Locked Tomb series is science-fantasy set in the far-flung future and has necromancy. The Magnus Archives is a podcast about an institute in London that takes down statements from people who have had encounters with the paranormal.
The Locked Tomb series begins with Gideon the Ninth: Link.
The Magnus Archives can be listened to on YouTube: Link.
Your favorite part of the Harry Potter series is the wizarding war, and your favorite house is Slytherin.
Check out The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. It’s about a necromancer who’s been resurrected. The necromancer in question is like 95% brat-turned-cool-uncle and 5% evil-necromancer.
The volumes are numbered and can be found on Amazon: Link.
There is also an adaptation entitled The Untamed that I have not watched yet, but it can be found on Netflix.
You really enjoy the social satire aspect of Harry Potter and think Hermione was right about House Elf liberation. Also, you’re okay with science fiction instead of fantasy.
Check out The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. It’s about an enslaved cyborg finding freedom, making friends, and healing from trauma.
The first book is All Systems Red: Link.
You like Harry Potter because it’s comfort media. Life is rough, and you want a piece of media that’s engaging but gentle.
Check out the podcast Welcome to Night Vale. It’s presented as the community radio broadcast out of a small, deeply weird town in the American southwest.
You can listen to it on YouTube: Link.
If you want something in print form, there’s The Lord of the Rings: Link.
If you like movies, there’s Jupiter Ascending: Link.
Don’t hesitate to ask if you want more information (such as content warnings) for any of the above.

Happy birthday, book! Sherlock is a Girl's Name is now available from Improbable Press
The anthology
What would the Great Detective be like if Sherlock Holmes was a woman? That’s the question answered in Sherlock is a Girls’ Name, an anthology imagining Sherlock Holmes as female, in tall tales that follow the great detective across time and even space.
The stories in this collection, selected by long-time Sherlockian editors Narrelle M. Harris @221b-hound and @atlinmerrick, imagine Holmes in deep space, 1990s Russia, Victorian London, contemporary USA, worlds of magic and more.
Holmes’ many Watsons include ghosts, robots, a young boy who doesn’t speak, a teenage tuba player, a stranger on a plane – and that’s just to start. In each story Holmes and her Watson do what they do best: solve crimes and have adventures!
Amazing cover art by Andrea L. Farley.
My story
I am thrilled to be a part of this wonderful anthology! My story is “The Case of the Man Who Wasn’t Dead”: Modern-era medium Sherlock Holmes solves the murders of the dead who contact her via her spirit guide, Jane Watson, a nurse who died in 1944.
“You don’t have to be so rude,” Jane said. The light from the kitchen window didn’t affect her, didn’t set her red curls aglow or brighten her pale skin. But she was unfailingly lovely all the same, in that white sundress, with her hair swept back from her face and her lips bright red. If Jane were alive today, Sherlock thought, she’d probably be a fan of glitter lipstick, going around looking like she’d kissed one of Dorothy’s ruby slippers.
Sherlock did attempt not to make a habit of thinking about Jane Watson kissing things.
(Sherlock has a Crush.) And that’s her on the top left of the back cover!

Here is a fact about humanity that humanity as a whole often tries to reject: originality is not the holy grail.  There is no special award for being the first one to have an idea, no magical “you got there first, good show” prize for being the person to pioneer a new shape of story.  Humans are magpies, one and all.  They see, they steal, they polish and rearrange, building bowerbird palaces of bits and pieces, and the most enduring stories have always been made from the gutted remains of a thousand things that came before.
That isn’t to say that theft is an acceptable means of creative expression.  The best are patchwork artisans, not highwaymen: they do not steal, but they allow themselves to be inspired by the stories already all around them, the fairy tales and the folklore, the local legends and the family rumors and the lies and the lies and the lies.  It doesn’t matter, to a storyteller, whether the seed they plant is false or true; the story that sprouts from it will be both things at once, patently untrue, and yet filled with a core of absolute honesty.  Neal is not a thief of dreams.
He is, however, a guide to all the many roads that you might potentially walk to find your own store of seeds.
He will walk with you through fairy tale forests and down dark folkloric lanes, guide you through the tangled briars of poetry and escort you into the gated halls of history.  The seeds you plant may, in their first sprouting, resemble his own, but with proper care and nurturing, they will bloom into something altogether beautiful and different, and there will be none more eager to applaud you when you appear at your first Fiction and Floral Show than the scaly king of seams, who sees all the places you have stitched old stories together to come up with something entirely your own.
Don’t worry so much about being the first.
Worry about being the best.

Nobody asked but these are some of my favorite podcasts!
I’ve gotten really into podcasts the past couple of years because of social isolation, my knitting addiction, and because they really help me get through tedious chores like folding laundry and washing dishes (this is honestly my favorite adhd hack, besides turning on instrumental fantasy music so I can focus when reading). So I’ve definitely cultivated a little mind garden of spooky, magical, and informative podcasts that I wanted to share with you. Some are more mainstream, some are a little more obscure, but all of them are dear to me and have comforted and nourished me during dark days.
National park after dark~ my current favorite podcast is hosted by two new englanders with backgrounds in conservation, animal care, and park exploration who share stories about dark happenings, mysterious sightings, perilous treks, and deadly experiences at national parks across the globe
Your magic~ an inclusive and open-minded modern magic podcast hosted by popular author, tarot fanatic, and lifelong witch Michelle Tea that features an amazing lineup of diverse guests including scientists, musicians, actors, social justice advocates, fledgling magic practitioners, and people who were practicing magic without even realizing it
Pleasing Terrors~ hosted by a former tour guide of haunted locations, this podcast explores morbid histories, creepy folktales, and unexplained circumstances from the perspective of a person who has devoted their life to researching and sharing ghost stories for over 20 years
Out There~ this queer host with a voice like melted butta tells dramatic tales about the encounters with, descriptions of, and theories about the cryptids that haunt our imaginations (the podcast used to include a weird club segment at the end where they would invite their hilarious friends to discuss the believability of the featured cryptid, but it’s been missing for a few months and I hope it comes back 🥺)
Lore~ most people are probably aware of this delightfully spooky podcast about frightening folklore, but I had to include it because this is one of my go-to podcasts for when I’m taking a nighttime bath by candlelight and need a good spooky story to soak to, because I’m a little weirdo like that
The Strange and unusual podcast~ intoxicating and beautifully-told macabre stories that range from dark fairytales, mysterious murders, tainted histories, and hand-woven tales crafted by the host herself (it’s accompanied by melancholic music and the occasional low budget sound effects of people grunting/dying lol)
Morbid~ my emotional support murder podcast 😭😹. I was never really one to follow true crime, but I discovered this popular podcast when researching the haunted past of lake Lanier and I fell in love with these girls and their wonderful storytelling, hilarious banter, and thoughtful perspectives. Plus, getting extra insight from Alaina’s autopsy background is fascinating to me. And who doesn’t love the delightful nonsense and off-the-cuff witticisms that spout from Ash.
Cults~ this is the podcast that got me into daily listening! I was a big fan of welcome to night vale since the beginning, but Cults is the podcast that truly got me hooked on podcast listening and I even fall asleep to it (I guess listening to horrifying stories about mass manipulation is… soothing? Am I okay?). The podcast has unfortunately been on a year long hiatus but it has an ton of archived episodes that will thrill and chill you. Now I guess I need to start a new cult so they can have more content 🤔🤫
Coffee & Cauldrons~ this podcast is hosted by two professional tarot readers with mentoring personalities who want to make the world of magic accessible to everyone. Their show includes book recommendations for beginners, insights on how to practice during different lunar phases, tips on creating your own altar, and stories about their personal practice.
Spooked~ the latest podcast I’ve added to my very long list is hosted by a black creator who shares ghost stories from the first-person perspective. I really like this podcast because it’s produced by a team of people who are very diverse in race, age, gender, location, and background, and the guests they feature on the podcast to tell their own stories are just as varied.
If you made it to the end, thank ya and love ya! Happy spooking! 💜🌸👻

New Releases
We've got four new YA books on our radar this week! Check out what's on deck for launch this Tuesday:
The Lotus Flower Champion by Pintip Dunn and Love Dunn
It looks like paradise…only it’s not. This was supposed to be a once-in-a-lifetime family trip to Thailand. One last wish for my dying mama. Instead, we’re stranded on a lush, stunning island with ten strangers—held captive as Thai mythology unfolds around us…and within us.
Now we’re being tested. We’re expected to face our greatest fears—and possible deaths—in hopes of awakening some kind of dormant gift…or curse. One by one, we’re transforming, echoing the strange and sometimes wondrous abilities found in Thai folktales. But my mama has only days to live, my papa is missing, and I’m forced to trust a group of strangers…including our evasive, dark-eyed tour guide, who resembles a minor god. Toss me in the ocean and feed me to the naga now.
Only I’m no hero. My days are managed by numbers and the compulsions that used to keep me safe. I have to prove how far I can go. To survive. To protect my family. And to find a way off this perilous island where everything is a lie…including reality.
Carry My Secret to Your Grave (Murder, She Wrote #2) by Stephanie Kuehn
Small town murders. Big time thrills. The second installment in the suspenseful, modern update of the classic mystery TV series. Perfect for fans of One of Us Is Lying, Sadie, and Gossip Girl.
“Someone knows where you live. And whoever they are, they want you to know… you’re next.” Bea Fletcher never met a cold case she didn’t want to solve. So when she finds herself staying with family near Lake Paloma, she’s torn. Sure, she’s not thrilled to be bunking with her moody, taciturn uncle and his wife while her father’s out of town. Being away from Cabot Cove means less time for Bea to work on her true crime blog, visit her great-aunt Jessica, and spend time with new friends Leisl, Leif, and Carlos and the mysterious underground treasure hunting game they’ve been playing.
But Lake Paloma has mysteries of its own, including the unsolved drowning of teenaged Eden Vicente the year before. And when Bea starts to ask questions about Eden’s death, the answers lead her closer to home than she ever imagined. If Bea isn’t careful, she could be the next girl to end up at the bottom of the lake.
What the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez
Bolivian-Argentinian Inez Olivera belongs to the glittering upper society of nineteenth century Buenos Aires, and like the rest of the world, the town is steeped in old world magic that’s been largely left behind or forgotten. Inez has everything a girl might want, except for the one thing she yearns the most: her globetrotting parents—who frequently leave her behind.
When she receives word of their tragic deaths, Inez inherits their massive fortune and a mysterious guardian, an archeologist in partnership with his Egyptian brother-in-law. Yearning for answers, Inez sails to Cairo, bringing her sketch pads and an ancient golden ring her father sent to her for safekeeping before he died. But upon her arrival, the old world magic tethered to the ring pulls her down a path where she soon discovers there’s more to her parent’s disappearance than what her guardian led her to believe.
With her guardian’s infuriatingly handsome assistant thwarting her at every turn, Inez must rely on ancient magic to uncover the truth about her parent’s disappearance—or risk becoming a pawn in a larger game that will kill her.
The Space Between Here and Now by Sarah Suk
Seventeen-year-old Aimee Roh has Sensory Time Warp Syndrome, a rare condition that causes her to time travel to a moment in her life when she smells something linked to that memory. Her dad is convinced she’ll simply grow out of it if she tries hard enough, but Aimee’s fear of vanishing at random has kept her from living a normal life.
When Aimee disappears for nine hours into a memory of her estranged mom–a moment Aimee has never remembered before–she becomes distraught. Not only was this her longest disappearance yet, but the memory doesn’t match up with the story of how her mom left–at least, not the version she’s always heard from her dad.
Desperate for answers, Aimee travels to Korea, where she unravels the mystery of her memories, the truth about her mother, and the reason she keeps returning to certain moments in her life. Along the way, she realizes she’ll need to reconcile her past in order to save her present.

I wonder why Till picked eels as his tattoo. I mean, it’s a big one! I guess we’ll never know.
Now I understand what they meant when they said “everything he does is extreme”. Most people get a tattoo, then maybe another one, and he goes in and -bam!- covers his entire back.
The eel nest... That's a good question ! It's true that it's a big tattoo, and according to the tattoo artist, Till didn't move an inch during the days he worked on it, I really don't know how he did it but as he has a great resistance to pain, that must help.
Only Till, and maybe the artist who tattooed it, know the true meaning of this tattoo, so I can only offer you interpretations (this is going to be a long answer) (and before anyone asks, yes I had researched the meaning of eels before, I know it's weird).
There are two mentions of eels in Till's works : the first explicit in Knebel's video ; and the second in the lyrics of the song 'Mutter' ("In ihren Lungen wohnt ein Aal" / "An eel lives in her lungs").
Knebel's version is interesting because according to Éloïse Mozzani : "Ingesting the hot heart gives the talent of prophecy and [...] it "will bring back to life everything that will be presented, and will restore it to life as before". (I don't remember any other mentions either in the lyrics or in the poems...)
It is Knebel's video that is chosen by artist Randy Engelhardt in his presentation of Till's tattoo.
Tumblr media
The eel is a snake-like fish with a slimy body, reduced fins, able to breathe out of the water and which lives in rivers, ponds and meadows but goes to the middle of the oceans to lay there. It is sometimes confused with the snake, and therefore its symbolism too, just as it resembles the serpent and the dragon of the Middle Ages.
In French, there is an expression which says : "il y a anguille sous roche" (literally "there are eels under the rock") which amounts to expressing one's perplexity vis-à-vis a situation that one considers questionable. A second expression says : "filer comme une anguille" ("flee like an eel") which is said of something that escapes without being able to hold it, on which nothing can be founded.
The eel is intimately linked to water as an element and to the moon as a guide because eels find their way thanks to the moon. And indeed, a study conducted at the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research has just confirmed that the moon influences the migration of these fish.
For Jean Chevalier and Alain Gheerbrant in their 'Dictionary of symbols' : "The eel - for us elusive and a symbol of dissimulation - is linked both to the snake by its morphology and to aquatic symbols by its habitat. It was, in the Ancient Egypt, the emblem of the Harsomtous of Dendera, rising sun, symbol of the primordial manifestation emerging from the waters. A familiar animal in Japan, it is considered there as a divine messenger : iconography associates it with the turtle. [...] At a lower level, the eel unites the symbolisms of the snake and water. It has kept a sexual connotation in modern slang which sometimes uses the image "eel in the underwear" to designate the penis."
In my native region, Brittany (West of France), the eel is sacred, as Éloïse Mozzani confirms in her book 'The Book of Superstitions, Myths, Beliefs and Legends' : "According to a belief in the Middle Ages, eating eel was harmful to the voice and made young girls sassy with men. However, these few pernicious effects were nothing compared to the magical and medicinal properties attributed to a fish whose divine character the ancient Egyptians recognized - only priests were authorized to consume it - just like the Bretons of the last century and the Japanese who still consider it a divine messenger."
For Didier Colin author of the 'Dictionary of symbols, myths and legends' : "[...] the eel is a symbol of secrecy, mystery, concealment, but also of something which escapes us, which slips between the fingers, which one cannot retain, grasp, understand. However, because it lives in clear waters, it has a much less bad reputation than the snake. [...] The appearance of an eel in a dream can therefore announce to you that "there is an eel under the rock", that is to say that you are being told something that you will not take long to learn, or that you are hiding a a fact of which you will soon have the revelation ; Similarly, in the tradition of omens, seeing a living eel swimming at the surface of the water is the announcement of a secret that will be revealed to us or of a confidence that will be made to us. to find an eel under a rock is to learn a surprising fact that we did not know, but which nevertheless existed without our knowledge. To see a dead eel is to discover a fact relating to a past circumstance or an event which is no longer relevant, but which was concealed from us in its time, or of which we were fooled."
For Melissa Alvarez, author of 'Meet Your Energy Animal', the eel is defined by the following characteristics : "The eel symbolizes transformation, mystery, disguise and hiding. The eel is excellent at using camouflage to protect itself from predators. It is fast and swims by moving her body in a sinusoidal fashion. The eel's electric shock can produce a six hundred volt shock that paralyzes its prey. The eel tends to have poor vision, and it relies on its radar-like sense of perception to search for food. During the day, she buries herself in the mud and rests there until she is ready to go back to hunting. It talents are : Attractiveness ; Ability to relate ; Flexible ; Privacy ; Night ; Sens of observation ; Sensuality ; Vitality. And it challenges : Evasive ; Reserve ; Too cautious ; Lonely ; Fleeing."
John Matthews makes it a powerful totem in his book 'Celtic Animal Totems, A Shamanic Journey to Meet Your Allied Animal' : "A great source of wisdom and inspiration like the salmon (on which it feeds), the he eel also has a reputation for protection. Irish mythology suggests that certain eels could transform into destructive weapons when wielded by a warrior. This is how the name of the famous spear Gae-Bolg belonging to Cuchulainn, comes from the Eel Morrigan herself assumes the form of an eel in magical combat with Cuchulainn. Given its ability to insinuate itself into the least accessible places, the eel is an ally of choice when seeking the answer to a difficult question, requiring subtlety and flexibility in its approach. Totem precepts :
Pathfinder : Anything can go like water flows.
Protector : Beware of treacherous currents.
Challenger : Actions always have consequences.
Hint : The deep waters contain treasures."
There must surely be other meanings to this animal, and an intimate meaning specific to Till of which only he can speak. But I think it might give you some directions...

From Ritual to Realms Beyond | Kinktober Day 2
Tumblr media
Pairing: Solomon x F! Reader
Prompt: Role-Play (nsfw, mdni)
Summary: Solomon and the reader find a mysterious page in one of his books. Taking inspiration, they decided to reenact it in a play of trust and intimacy.
Credit: @cafekitsune (divider), The Piano Lesson by Louis Tribout (art cover)
Warnings/Tags: missionary sex, blowjob (swallowing), emphasizing consent, Elizabethan dialogue (this is a warning lol)

Solomon’s room was a deep royal blue, the incandescence of the various candles providing a soothing atmosphere to the mysterious dorm. The time seemed to meld as one from ancient books, miscellaneous experiments, and modern technology strewn about in organized chaos. Lights seemed to flicker across the walls like tiny constellations. Chandeliers lined the ceiling, currently off to set a calm dimness—an ample, hardwood desk rest in the corner. Quills, beakers, and open tomes lay haphazardly on its elegant surface. The most important feature was the books that lined the wall, a plethora of genres that could occupy a person for a lifetime. A simple bed lay in the corner, sheets neatly tucked in and the light from the window illuminating the plush surface. In the center of the room was an opulent Chesterfield couch, two individuals entranced on a particular book on the coffee table before them.
“This chapter discusses river naiads. One, in particular, was the potamides that reside in rivers,” Solomon explained, flipping through the page and pointing to a particular excerpt. I gazed fondly at the text, relishing every word. “Some of these nymphs coveted young girls. It is said that these girls would have their freckles carefully removed by the nymphs themselves.”
“That’s cute,” I said with a giggle, watching as Solomon flipped the pages. “But I think freckles are lovely.”
Solomon hummed in response, a faint smile adorning his features. He paused on a page with an extensive image carefully stamped in pristine detail. I reached out, carefully feeling the aging page beneath my touch. I focused on Solomon, curious to hear more from him.
“Nymphs often would help—” Solomon began but paused as he flipped the page again. He turned it over a few times, his thoughts indecipherable.
“What is it?” I asked before he turned towards me, the corners of his lips curling. A mischievous twinkle shown in his eye. I knew something interesting was about to happen.
“Feel this page here, (Y/n),” Solomon said, guiding my hand to the page. I copied his actions from earlier but didn’t notice anything unusual. His expectant gaze told me it was apparent, but I was none the wiser. “Here, allow me to show you.”
Solomon’s hand drifted over the book as I felt the faint shimmer of magic permeate through the air. Lines crisscrossed over the page, revealing something between them.
“I noticed the page felt heavier than the others. There’s also a faint trail of magic,” Solomon explained, ever certain with his judgment. “There, voilà.”
The page peeled with no resistance, showing the clandestine text underneath. From an outsider's perspective, the magic concealed it perfectly. Another drawing was revealed, along with related text. I could feel my face grow hot.
“Well, that’s interesting,” I said, peering down at the nymph engaging intimately with a man. I peeked at Solomon, enjoying his taken-aback expression. Of all the things to hide, it’s medieval pornography.
“Interesting, indeed,” Solomon said, skimming through the text. “It’s a story about a ritual. A sorcerer meets a river nymph who is cursed never to leave the water. As the river dries up, she convinces a sorcerer to free her. The two of them perform a ritual to restore her depleting magical energy. The ritual strengthens her, helping her break free. I suppose the illustration shows the ritual itself.”
“The river nymph must’ve been so beautiful that the man risked himself to save her,” I murmured, imagining the tale in my head. River nymphs were known to be either a blessing or a curse. Often, it was best to avoid them altogether, no matter their desperation.
“Even the fairest of naiads could never compare to your ethereal beauty,” Solomon added. Heat rose to my face as I tried to muster up with a witty comeback. However, nothing came to mind.
“You embarrass me,” I grumbled, earning a chuckle from him, much to my chagrin.
“Well, I can only imagine what you would look like as a naiad,” Solomon said. “You would vex every man who laid eyes on you.” “Including you?” I retorted, a flirtatious cadence to my voice.
“Including me,” Solomon affirmed, his eyes gazing tenderly into mine. “Though, I might have to fight anyone who tries.”
This time, it was my turn to laugh as I reached down to squeeze his hand. The image of Solomon fighting an onslaught of men in my honor made my heart flutter. He truly was my protector.
“I have an idea,” I gasped, a realization coming to my mind.
“You want me to fight for you?” Solomon asked, his eyebrow quirked in amusement. I shook my head vigorously.
“No. Well, not now,” I said. “Anyways, how about we… you know? Role play?”
Solomon’s face lit up devilishly. He gazed down at the image in the tome before looking up slyly at me. I held my ground, firm on my intentions.
“You want to be the nymph?” Solomon asked, and I nodded in return. “And I’ll be the sorcerer, I presume. Well, wouldn’t that be entertaining?”
“It reminded me of that transformation spell you showed me a couple of weeks ago, remember?”
Solomon nodded, remembering when we were studying for one of the exams. One of the chapters focused on deception. It was for demons to trick humans, but there have been instances of humans using cosmetical mirages. Solomon showed me how he can distort the spectrum of light around him, causing his hair to turn from white to different colors. Its use was very versatile.
“That’s certainly in the realm of possibility,” Solomon agreed with his finger on his chin in thought. “But it would be dangerous.”
My head tilted as I racked my brain for an explanation. Solomon’s eyes drifted away from me, a smile tugging at his lips. I was curious to know what things he would do. Solomon’s intentions were an enigma.
“Let’s do it.”
Not long after, we were starting the act. After a brief touch-up of what was to occur and what was off-limits, we reconvened to set the scene. Solomon recited an incantation from one of his books, dabbing my skin with liquid. I felt my body lighter upon finishing, realizing Solomon replaced my clothes with shimmering garments. The clothes were as light as a feather yet flowy and embellished to rival royalty. I felt like a princess, admiring my appearance through the mirror. The magic styled my hair to frame my face perfectly, adding the mystique and allure of a naiad. My skin almost seemed to sparkle like light flickering off the sea.
“Wow,” Solomon praised, kissing my cheek. “You look enchanting.”
I laughed, pecking his cheek back a little more forcefully. “I wish looking like this was this easy every day.”
“I will confess, I’m enamored by your everyday look. It feels comfortable… like home.”
I smiled sweetly, feeling the same when I was with him. I wished we could live together in the same room so I could see him in his natural habitat. It was nice to wake up and experience the mundane together. Sneaking in or staying the night just didn’t feel the same. I wanted to make a life together.
“Are you ready? We should begin,” Solomon asked, his hand reaching towards me. I took it gently as he led me to the center of the room. We took our positions. “Follow after me, okay?”
I nodded, watching as he changed his appearance to fit the scene. Instead of simply changing his outfit, his appearance was almost unrecognizable. His hair lengthened, shimmering with a faint golden hue. He wore a long mage robe embellished with dark green velvet, almost like moss. The robe's hem robe lay an intricate golden pattern, contrasting well with the robe—a vine wrapped around his waist which hung various pouches and a flask. Solomon still had his signature cape, this time a lighter shade of green. It shifted in the light, almost like the swaying of leaves. On his fingers were various rings of different styles. Solomon’s eyes were now a shade of green but still held that playfulness I could so dearly recognize.
“Hail, fair nymph of the waters,” Solomon began with a theatrical bow. “I am a sorcerer hailing from the northlands. Mine ears did catch thine cries of distress from yonder. Art thou unharmed?”
I tried to keep my composure to keep the moment flowing, but the language change was almost comical. Solomon seemed like an entirely different person. His new identity was both charming and frightening. I had no idea Solomon could act, but it would make sense, all things considered. Though my speech wasn’t perfect, I easily replicated his language.
“Thou art quite the actor, Solomon.”
Solomon looked taken aback, his palm on his chest in mock disbelief. He was enjoying the acting a bit too much. Although, when I mentioned roleplaying, I anticipated something a bit more sexy…
“Who be this Solomon? Such a name hath ne’er graced mine ears,” Solomon said. My brow quirked up.
“My apologies. I converse with thee,” I correct with a courtesy bow. “Thy speech is…different. I half expected thee to pull out a quill and parchment.”
“Perchance, fair nymph, ‘tis thou who art not immersed enough in our role,” Solomon chided. I knew he wasn’t serious, but his tone seemed genuine.
“Nay, sorcerer. I am but…unaccustomed to thy speech. Thy tongue is as silvered as thy magic.”
“Then, let us continue our tale. Mayhaps, by its end, thou will find thyself enamored not just by mine words but by the tale we weave together.”
From there, we enacted the roleplay, adding great charm to our characters. Solomon acted like a gentleman, showing his concern. I explained to him my predicament.
“Long ago, an envious fiend saw my realm flourish and sought to rob me of my dominion. She cursed me, chaining me to these fading waters. As they wane, so does my life force. I am tethered here, unable to seek other realms, fated to fade until naught remains.”
“I may assist thee. I am versed in a spell that hath the power to break such a curse, but thou must place thy trust in me. What sayeth thou, nymph?”
“Whatsoe’er it requireth. Do as thou seest fit,” I said, my face contorting as I tried to find the words. Speaking was a bit more tiring than I expected. When do we get to the good part?
Solomon discussed a spell with me. Although he was straightforward in his intentions, he left out a few details that confused me. When I asked him to clarify, he would find a way to distract me from my curiosity.
“Lie thee down upon the earth,” Solomon instructed, gesturing towards the floor of his dorm. I looked reluctantly, staying in character. Regardless, I did as he told me. “Calm thine spirit and empty thine thoughts. I shall take the fore. Follow mine lead.”
My body lies supine on the ground, my arms at my side. My skin shuddered as I felt Solomon’s cold touch. He caressed my body, paying particular attention to my most intimate areas. I could hear him mumble something under his breath. It didn’t sound like a language I recognized.
“Stay where thou art,” Solomon muttered as I wiggled underneath him. I couldn’t help it. How could anyone stay still?
“Easier for thee to utter,” I said indignantly. Solomon leaned above me, placing a finger over my lips. His face was furrowed in concentration as he continued the ritual, paying my disbelief no mind.
“Thou shalt feel aught peculiar. Heed it not,” Solomon muttered, but it was too late. I squeaked as I felt my body move on its own accord. I felt the ground leave from below me as my body hovered. It was a simple spell but enough to make my senses overreact. With no stability, I felt incredibly unbalanced and flailed my arms.
“Solomon, I’m going to fall!” I exclaimed, panic setting it. Solomon seemed to have no intentions of letting me go, however. Instead, he simply grasped my waist and pulled my body into his. To say I was a bit flustered to have his pelvis between my thighs was an understatement.
“What are you doing?” I said, breaking character yet again. Solomon flashed me a mock disapproving look.
“I didst bid thee to follow mine lead. Thou hast turned a deaf ear. This is an act of trust and circumspection. If thou continuest to wriggle, thou’lt mar the ritual,” Solomon said, his hands slowly running down the length of my body. His touch resonated through my skin. For a moment, I forgot my predicament. His eyes shined. Solomon knew he had the upper hand.
As Solomon supported me with his lower body, he started speaking in the strange language again. His voice was soft and sultry. Every word vibrated the air around us, and I could feel it against me. His voice was powerful. It made me feel vulnerable underneath him. Even though this ritual was an act of trust, it dived even deeper into our relationship. I wanted to say something but feared interrupting it. I also relished the power dynamic.
I noticed my skin starting to glow by the end of the incantation. It was simply mesmerizing. Slowly, I could feel my body begin to descend. Solomon’s touch didn’t dare leave me as he guided me. His actions soothed me.
“The hour is nigh, dear nymph, for thy salvation to be realized,” Solomon said as my body settled on the ground. I could only stare at him doe-eyed. Every movement and touch seemed to spark fireworks inside my head. Solomon leaned forward, and I realized how much I loved to see the outline of his chest through his clothes. I felt, in that instant, an intense desire to see more. More. More.
Solomon procured an item from his bag. It appeared to be a paintbrush with a pointed tip. I felt the brush tickle me as he traced symbols on my body. He used no ink or medium, yet images materialized on my body. I’ve never seen such shapes before. Each character carried an intense weight with each one he drew. Each stroke was meticulous and delicate as if painting on thin paper. I moaned as he lifted my shirt tantalizingly slow. Solomon paused.
“Doth the touch of a sorcerer stir thy senses?”
Solomon's eyes didn’t leave my face as I looked away shamefully. His hand carefully dragged each finger across my abdomen and belly. I arched my back, desperate to rid myself of the growing heat within me.
“I trow a mere whisper might send thee to the heavens,” Solomon said as he refrained to show the full extent of his amusement. “Yet we must proceed.”
He continued to draw more symbols across my flesh. All body parts must be covered, much to my embarrassment. He removed my clothes until I lay bare before him. Even though he had seen me naked a hundred times before, I felt like a virgin. The black text decorated my entire body. He seemed to study his work, but I realized his gaze was more focused on what lay beneath the symbols. My skin prickled with goosebumps as I tried to keep still.
“Dost thou fancy what thine eyes behold, sorcerer?” I said, a coy smile gracing my lips. Solomon looked taken aback but smiled wickedly. The distance closed as he crawled on top of me. He took a moment to gaze at my face as I lay entirely beneath him. Solomon’s blue eyes spoke more words than could be said at that moment.
“To touch thee, ‘tis to dance with the very flames of desire,” Solomon replied, leaning into a sweet kiss. I melted into his lips as I matched his movements. It was a respite from the aching within me. If Solomon continued to tease me, I wouldn’t be able to act anymore. His lips seemed even more appealing than the thousands of times I tasted them before.
I reached towards his waist, gripping at the fabric. My half-lidded eyes stayed transfixed on him as he parted. I needed him. I couldn’t keep this charade any longer.
“Thy lips speak innocence, yet thine body doth beckon me closer,” Solomon said. My face contorted as I rolled my eyes.
“Just fuck me, Sol,” I said, moaning as I pulled him into another kiss. I greedily moved my lips with him. My tongue swiped at his bottom lip, ready for entrance. Solomon hummed, using my lowered defense to slip his tongue into my mouth. Every time I tried to get the upper hand, Solomon was one step ahead.
Solomon’s arms wrapped around my body, keeping me steady against him. His tongue parted from my mouth, searching for new realms. Kisses lined my collarbone, my sternum, all the way to my hips. Each kiss tickled my skin, causing me to giggle. Seeing him so fixated on me brought warmth to my chest. I felt comfortable.
Solomon flashed me a smile, which was my cue to reassure him I was enjoying myself. He always kept an eye on me, even when preoccupied with his own pleasure. Seeing him eager to please made me feel secure. Even now, as Solomon suckled on my breasts, he made sure to monitor my reactions.
I gripped the back of his head, urging him for more. I cooed encouraging words as he licked and prodded. His right hand played with the other breast, his other hand cupped around my thigh.
“Mm, your taste is delectable,” Solomon said, nuzzling the flesh with his cheek. He seemed to forget his previous identity, as he seemed distracted with lust. “I would be content like this for eternity.”
I caressed his cheek, his eyes gazing upwards. Solomon’s beautiful eyes were glazed, a look of admiration and love smitten across every feature. Solomon hypnotized me. It reassured every uncertainty in my mind. Solomon was mine, and I was his. I committed each detail to memory as he returned to my body.
Solomon’s hand trailed down, rubbing the inner part of my thigh. Instinctively, I closed my leg. His touch was precise, like he understood every nerve within my body. I whimpered as I felt him rub his fingers along my exposed slit. Simply caressing me caused wetness to pool from within me. He used this benefit to rub my clit, my body twitching in response. I squeaked, clutching at his clothes. Solomon was quick to kiss my lips, causing my body to relax.
“Be careful,” I warned, rubbing his back gently. “I’m sensitive.”
“Isn’t that part of the fun?” Solomon chuckled, earning a wary glare from me. “I’m teasing. I will tread carefully, but I expect you to keep up.”
I held my breath as Solomon descended on my most intimate area. Various thoughts ran through my mind at that moment. Even though we have had sex in every conceivable position, this felt different. There was a strange feeling in my gut. I couldn’t explain it. Solomon was enjoying himself, as am I. Yet, I felt something new. Different.
I groaned as his tongue met the tender flesh of my clit. I could feel my legs twitch as he set the pace. Waves of pleasure reached my head. The worries became hazier and hazier. All I could think about was how much I loved Solomon. I would do anything for his love.
Solomon squeezed my thigh, digging in deeper. My breathing became heavier as the tension inside me built up. Each time he sucked my clit, it felt like a zap to my brain. I flexed my legs to resist the urge to close my thighs against him. Despite the looming threat, Solomon seemed content as he slipped a finger into my vagina.
“Ah, Solomon!” I gasped, placing both my palms by my side. My hands stretched and closed, finding a distraction against the new sensation. His finger rubbed the roof. It was slow at first before he eased more into it. Solomon let out an airy chuckle as I tensed underneath him.
The aching within me was building to unreasonable levels. I tried desperately to suppress it, but it was too much. I cried out, my body giving in to the onslaught of euphoria and pleasure. The high lasted a few moments before Solomon paused, allowing me to gather my bearings.
I gently rubbed my knee against him, my brain too overwhelmed to utter a single word. Instead, I reached out to him with my hands. He quickly understood, embracing me in a tender hug. Love, lust, and admiration all came to a head. At that moment, I wanted it all.
“Are you ready for more?” Solomon asked, pecking my lips. I hummed in agreement. He whispered something unintelligible, but I was too busy focusing on his figure on top of me. Solomon’s hips rutted against me, his breathing becoming more rugged. I could feel his rigid dick through his pants. Knowing that I turned him on was pleasure enough.
Before I could register his actions, I felt the hot flesh of his dick rubbing the outline of my pussy. My hips moved with him, taking every ounce of pleasure I could get. He whispered more dirty words, but still, all I could think about was what was yet to come. The anticipation was killing me.
Solomon’s dick prodded at my entrance, coating the head in the slickness of my essence. It only took one push before he slid inside. Feeling my pussy expand against him made me gasp. The air seemed to leave my lungs the further he pushed. Solomon is powerful in many ways. His body was a force to reckon with.
“Are you doing well, my dear?” Solomon asked, his eyes lighting up in delight at my squirming form. I let out a muffled reply, slowly absorbing the many sensations. When his full length wrapped around me, Solomon thrust slowly. It was gentle initially, but I knew he was simply resisting the temptations. I squeezed his bicep, encouraging him with a smitten glance.
That was all Solomon needed. His pace became more vigorous and sloppy. The sounds of his cock against my wet pussy was enough to arouse me more and more. Each thrust was a shockwave. I couldn’t keep in the moans the more he delved into me.
“Solomon,” I gasped, the first response I could fathom to say. He leaned forward, gingerly sucking on my nipple while he fucked me senseless. My hips rotated in unison, the tip of his member rubbing the bundle of nerves inside. The tension came back in full force, as well as an overwhelming desire to reach its peak.
“Every gasp, every shiver—my entire life has led up to this moment. Take it all, my dear,” Solomon whispered, saliva trailing between his mouth and my breast. I cried out as he lifted my hips, angling deeper and deeper. I was a mess as I mumbled incoherently, letting the pleasure rush over me. Before I knew it, the tension snapped, and I was riding yet another orgasm to its finish. By now, Solomon had wiped every sane thought from me.
Solomon’s thrusts lessened as he watched me. I grunted with each movement, my senses heightened and out of control. What was a mere moment felt like an eternity. Oxytocin and dopamine incited a primal need to love him—to be with him. I never wanted to part from this intimate moment.
Before I could protest, Solomon retracted his dick from my aching hole. I whined, an emptiness left in his wake. Nothing could prepare me for his departure.
I knew he was still in need of an orgasm. I crawled towards him, taking his wet cock between my hands. It smelled like sex, our scent heavy in the air. With an experimental taste, I pushed it into the damp recesses of my mouth. As I bobbed my head up and down, I adjusted to his girth. Pride welled up inside my chest as my nose touched the base of his dick. My tongue synchronized with my movement, earning a distinctive moan from the sorcerer.
“Ugh, if you keep that up, I’m going to—” Solomon gasped, but it was too late. He thrust inside my mouth. I gargled in protest, my eyes widening as I felt his seed release inside me. My thoughts screamed to retract, but I wanted to appreciate the moment. I wanted Solomon to fill up my throat with everything he had.
I could see his chest heave up and down. His hand caressed my hair as he watched me swallow his cum. It was thick and salty. I loved it, but it wasn’t an easy task. I grasped Solomon’s dick, licking up the rest. His brows furrowed with each touch.
When I was done and satisfied with my efforts, I returned to eye level with him. My smug expression said everything that was on my mind. I felt victorious, another win over the conniving man.
“Why must you look at me like that,” Solomon chuckled, slowly pulling his clothes back on. The illusion from our play had faded, revealing our usual attire. I somehow felt more at ease seeing him like this.
“Maybe I just like looking at you,” I teased, licking my lips. Solomon’s taste wouldn’t leave my lips. It was simply perfection.
“Well, aren’t we fortunate? I happen to enjoy being the object of your gaze,” Solomon said, earning a giggle from me. He reached out a hand towards me. “Let’s get you cleaned up. Do you need some water?”
No matter how many times we spent together, I knew my satisfaction was Solomon’s priority. I felt pampered and loved by the end of the day. That’s all I desired, and I wanted the same for him. We forgot our roleplay long ago, but it will remain in my heart forever. Even though we never reached the story’s denouement, we shattered the true curse. Through trust and our unwavering bond, I finally felt free.

I had an impulsive July! Some of these books are continuations that I more or less expected to read, but I sure did just grab some random books this month. Most of which pleasantly surprised me! A couple of which just simply surprised me...
Tumblr media
A Marvellous Light
A Marvellous Light was probably my favourite book this month and it was one of my random impulses! I saw some fanart that intrigued me so I grabbed it from the library on a whim -- by now I have bought my own copy because it was just that well done. I am always a sucker for a well executed period adventure, especially when it can work in magical elements (I’m looking at you Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue) and this did everything I could possibly want from this sort of novel. It’s set in the Edwardian period and was such a perfect blend between action, tension and mystery, comedy, and romance; I was completely invested in both of the main characters the whole way through. Oh, and it felt like it fit in the time period, that the dialogue, narration, manners, stage dressing were all appropriate. There's nothing worse than a historical novel where the writing feels painfully modern.
The story starts out with baronet Robin Blythe who is having a no-good very bad day at work. He holds a civil servant position in the government and was just demoted to a shoddy little nothing position that he’s never even heard of by someone with a grudge against his parents. He quickly realizes how in over his head he is though when he finds out that the “special” part of “Special Liaison” actually means “magic”. Something that definitely doesn’t exist, except apparently it does, and now he has to navigate this strange new world with a very exasperated magical coworker, Edwin Courcey. His day only gets worse from there...

A Rover’s Story
A charming little novel told from the point of view of a fictionalized Mars rover. I admit I’m not a very science minded person, but from my inexpert opinion it seems quite well researched, with their Rover being heavily modelled after the previous rovers that were sent to Mars. I appreciated the author's note at the back that discussed some of the research that went into the novel, what was and wasn't accurate, and what was changed for the sake of narration.
It is a very neat journey that starts with Resilience still in pieces in a lab, as it gets to know the scientists around itself and what its eventual mission will be, and how its life goes from there. Though it can't communicate with the humans, it is able to communicate with all sorts of other electronics in the lab! The story is counterbalanced by the daughter of one of the scientists who writes to the rover as a sort of journal to deal with her mother so rarely being home. It was a quick read but very sweet.

American Girl: Meet Addy // Addy Learns A Lesson // Danger at the Zoo
I have continued to read the American Girl books after being pleasantly surprised by the Kit book I read last month (Kit Saves The Day). Their strongest point is definitely what strong historical fiction stories they are! At least from the ones I’ve read so far, the time period is never just a backdrop, the authors do take the time to ensure that the novel’s plot and problems are directly tied into what makes that point in time unique, and even as an adult I found myself learning interesting tidbits of information. The little “looking back” nonfiction section at the end of the books is especially neat!
I really enjoyed both of the Addy books I read. These stories take place in 1864 during the Civil War. Addy’s family are slaves on a southern plantation, and the first book is about Addy’s escape from captivity with her mother, while the second book looks at the continued hardships and inequality that even free black people in the North suffered. They did a good job balancing the intended age bracket with the seriousness of the subject matter, and it didn’t feel like it shied away from making its point.
The Kit Mystery book, Danger at the Zoo I was less impressed with, which disappointed me because I really enjoyed Kit Saves The Day. It wasn’t bad, per se, just rather middling. A fine read, but not dazzling. Maybe I had overinflated my expectations; given that it was a bigger book, I had hoped that it would up its game a bit, but it felt rather the opposite. It was a fine story, it dealt with historical details well, but it did a poor job creating the sort of tension I would want from a proper “mystery” novel. It often felt like we were treading water, where a quicker pace would have helped.

Doctor Who: Deep Time // Silhouette // Mission to Venus
My Doctor Who kick is still going strong. Relentless. Silhouette and Deep Time were both fine, basic examples of a decently written Doctor Who novel. Deep Time was rather forgettable... the side characters never really succeeded in interesting me, and it often felt like it suffered from pacing issues. It was about the Doctor and Clara on a doomed space mission that gets stranded in deep space, but I enjoyed listening to it in the background while I was doing other stuff.
Silhouette was actually pretty great, probably because I’m a total sucker for the Paternoster Gang. It was a fun mystery set in a ~mysterious carnival~ during a frost fair on the Thames. It had the characters splitting up and exploring different avenues to solve a set of murders. Lots of good Vastra and Jenny stuff, and Strax was absolutely hilarious, he stole the show every time he was featured. Love him. The whole thing was a pretty solid plot, pretty funny, and I thought both The Doctor and Clara got pretty decent characterization throughout. Would recommend this one if you want a solid Doctor Who read.
The last one, Mission to Venus, was hands down the funniest though, albeit unintentionally. Did you know there were really trashy Doctor Who Choose Your Own Adventure books written in the 80s? I didn’t, but I do now and obviously I had to get my hands on one. It is Exceptionally Bad but in the funniest possible way. I had a blast reading through this and I really don’t know what to say about it besides look at the cover. Look at it. Amazing. The Doctor, Peri (and You!) wind up on a spaceship that is trying to transfer dangerous by highly nutritional plants to a stricken colony, but is very soon imperiled.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation v4
I creep every closer to finishing the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation series! Not much I can say about it that I haven’t said about the others that wouldn’t enter outright spoiler territory, so I’ll just say that this was another great volume. Some of them have felt overly bogged down by some of their flashbacks (like the entire back half of volume 2 and the endless Yi City arc. I'm not saying it wasn't interesting but my god this was a Victor Hugo level diversion) but this one went at a great pace and it’s nice to feel like we’re actually making progress in the main plot even if, romantically speaking, WWX and LWJ continue to be two of the dumbest human beings alive. Bless this slow burn, I’m gonna kill them both. Also enjoyed the side characters we got in this book — I loved how great the Juniors were, loved my dear, cranky, miserable Jiang Cheng, loved Wen Ning Doing His Best. Great book. I’m dragging my feet about reading the fifth book because I don’t want this to end.

Love Beyond Body Space & Time: An Indigenous LGBT Sci-Fi Anthology
A really neat anthology of short stories written by Canadian Indigenous authors that are all focused on queer sci-fi stories. It’s way too easy to box Indigenous stories into the singular genres of “historical” or “contemporary” so it was great having an entire book devoted to various Indigenous perspectives on science fiction. Like any anthology there were some weak stories and some phenomenally good stories. I picked this one up specifically because Cherie Dimaline (author of The Marrow Thieves) wrote for it, and she did not disappoint, but all the stories were so different and so interesting that I can’t recommend it enough.
Short story collections like this are especially good for people without a lot of time or who are trying to revitalize their reading attention span imo because it gives you fully formed, bite-sized stories that put a lot of care and detail into their telling.
Tumblr media
Nimona
Obviously I had to finally read Nimona. It’s been on my TBR for ages, and, like absolutely everyone else I think, I figured I had better read it now that the movie is out. I enjoyed both the comic and the film very much! It was interesting to see two slightly different takes on the same narrative, and I think both expressed the point they were trying to make very well. I honestly couldn't say which version I enjoyed more. I doubt I have anything to say that someone else hasn’t said much, much better, so I'll leave it with that.
Tumblr media
Torchwood: Skypoint
One of the better Torchwood books I’ve read so far, I think! It had some pretty solid characterization tbh. The story wasn’t anything mind blowing, but a survival adventure in a high tech apartment was a fun setting, and I am literally never going to say not to a fake marriage plot line 👀 so a story about Owen and Tosh going undercover as a newly-wed couple in a sinister apartment building that might be eating its residents was just plain old fun.  It also delivered me some truly delicious Tosh/Owen angst. Mwah. It was all around a pretty darn good Owen book, which he deserved after being slandered so badly in Something in the Water. Though I was a little disappointed by how Tosh was handled — I kept expecting her to have a bigger role than she really got by the end.

 Yuri Bear Storm v1
…I have no words. I bought this one on a whim because the description on the back made me laugh:
Every night, 16-year-old Kureha has a strange dream involving lilies, storms, and... her classmate Ginko as a bear?! At school, Kureha's unassuming personality and looks render her practically invisible. Sometimes, it feels like no one notices her at all... until cute and energetic Ginko asks Kureha to talk privately one day during lunch. Maybe she really is a bear... or maybe she's just got a crush on Kureha!
but frankly there were too few bears. I thought I was getting a bear-themed magical girl book with lesbians. I have no idea what I actually got. You can tell there’s some sort of metaphor at work here — and I’ve got an Honours Degree in English Literature, dragging bullshit metaphors out of the text kicking and screaming is like my whole thing — but I’ll be damned if I could actually tell you what it is. It’s either wildly inconsistent and deranged, or genius. Or maybe there's no metaphor at all and the authors just really wanted to draw bear ears and panty-shots *shrug* I cannot emphasize enough how little sense this book made. Every time I thought I maybe had a handle on things it got progressively more inscrutable, it was actually rather impressive.

May get the second book, we’ll see how weak my resolve is not to waste my money.

-Writeblr Introduction-
Welcome to my little corner of the world, I’m happy you’ve made it here 🫧
My name is Tory (she/her), I’m 19 years old and I make many different kinds of art including;
-poems
-songs
-stories
All my art revolves around the central themes of what it’s like to be a (teenage) girl in this world, how I experience life, platonic and romantic relationships and if not that then something utterly and completely outlandish like being a dog or or accidentally killing your lover at a bar
If that’s something you’re interested in then feel free to stick around 🐚
I mainly made this account so I can have a place where I can put all my art without having to make too much of a fuss about it
I currently have two WIP’s both of which don’t necessarily fall into the dark academia genre but do very much feel like they should
1. Stars burn up (working title)
A story about two academic rivals, who are quietly alienated at their elite boarding school, being forced to work on a project together. They find a secret passageway to a treacherous and magical alley along the way that could put both of them in great danger 🪐
2. Whispers of the bastards
A story about a girl being recruited into a group of spies in a city full of thieves and criminals figuring out that the machinations of said town are much more deliberate than she could have ever imagined and having to decide if she wants to profit from it or tear it all down ⚔️
I make it a point to write about flawed and interesting people that are barely anything like your usual fantasy heroes and I write stories that reflect and comment on modern societal issues. At the same time I’m a huge sucker for romance and I don’t think I will ever write anything without it.
I also have an AO3 account called theetherealnemesis where I write fanfiction, if you care to read a sample of my writing. Right now I only have an unfinished fanfic about house of the dragon on there but I do really like what I’ve written so far and plan to continue it.
This really is an account for people who like art, writing specifically, and everyone is welcome here
My other interests include:
-politics
-history
-concerts
-greek mythology
Movies/shows📽️:
Promising young woman, Saltburn, Ballad of Songbirds and snakes, Bottoms, the statistical probability of love at first sight, Howls moving castle, candy jar/ Percy Jackson, The Rookie, Brooklyn 99, Modern family, one piece live action, heart break high, fleabag
Singer/Songwriters🎶:
Taylor Swift, Chappell Roan, Ethel Cain, Sabrina Carpenter, Sufjan Stevens, Mitski, Phoebe Bridgers, Quinnie
Books📚:
Percy Jackson, Six of crows, a good girls guide to murder, Cruel Prince, All the bad apples, Enchanté, Aphrodite made me do it, Legendborn, Dearly, poetry by Sappho and Emily Dickinson
I also have a TikTok account under the same @ as here where I post all kinds of stuff
Hope you have fun here
