𝘾𝙝𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙢𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝘽𝙧𝙞𝙜𝙜 𝙂𝙖𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙣 𝘾𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙨 𝙖𝙧𝙧𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙙! 🌟
The family and I were lucky enough to be invited to the PR Christmas Launch at @brigggardencentre - loads of people were lined up to join in and see all the festive decor!
I know it's a shock to the system having the 'C' word mentioned in September but it's a big event for Brigg (and also people love it)
The staff had put on a fantastic event with free flowing Prosecco and @belvoirfarm_uk drinks plus mince pies and Christmas cake, Mr and Mrs Claus were there too of course to open up the incredible Christmas section (Oscar was very excited to tell them what he wants for Christmas) there was a Gingerbread Bakery offering yummy treats and shelves filled with every festive style imaginable!
There was also a Wreathe making display but my kids were feral so we missed that part as they needed 15 minutes chill time.
The first photo I've used is the photo taken by the Hull Daily Mail and also featured on the online Grimsby Telegraph (and yes that's Oscar pulling the sigma face)
We were also given an awesome festive goody bag for going - featuring items like  @baylisandhardingplc @yankeecandle @carebears and Enchante.
📌 𝘉𝘪𝘨𝘣𝘺 𝘏𝘪𝘨𝘩 𝘙𝘥, 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘨𝘨 𝘋𝘕20 9𝘏𝘌
Brigg Garden Centre is well known for its large Christmas displays, covering over 3500 square feet - the displays showcase twelve themes and is home to the most extensive range of decorations, trees and lights.
There are also over 60 Garden Centres throughout the UK! They have a variety of departments in store from plants to furniture but you can browse online to see what they have available too.
Plus they have a 'Family Card' where you can receive regular discount vouchers and save instantly with Family Card prices.

Driving Worries
Tumblr media
Pairing: Simon 'Ghost' Riley x Civilian!Reader Scenario: Simon gets a first hand experience at your driving and is less than impressed Note: Set in 2014 Warnings: No mask Simon (It's my personal headcanon in his regular life he probably wouldn't wear it), teasing, canon-typical swearing, very bad driving, very British driving.
Simon had begrudgingly agreed to joining you at a drink out over your friend’s house for the evening. In your own words it was one of your nicer friends, which made him a little worried about the rest of your friends. Regardless, if it would make you happy then Simon would join. Plus, you’d offered to drive so at least he could sit back and relax on the journey, or at least that was what he had thought…
The beginning of the journey was harrowing. There were multiple times that Simon had to remind you the speed limit, wave his hand apologetically to other vehicles you had pulled out on. All this whilst you happily sat beside him, either chatting away or humming along to the music. His sunshine girl. Fuck, she was gonna kill them both.
The way that Simon gripped at the handle above him as you drove a little too close to a parked car. His eyes flickered over as you continued to hum along happily to the radio seemingly unaware that you’d almost written-off your car along with the poor idiot who’d parked on the curb. “Turn this down a bit…” His fingers diligently rolled the sound down on your stereo as you frowned in his direction. “Eyes on the road.” He commanded, now that the radio was low, he could hear the gears churning, it made him visibly wince, allowing for it to continue thinking that maybe you might right the error before needing to be told, but it didn’t happen. “Think you’re in the wrong gear, love…” “Oh yeah…” You laughed with ease, changing the gear with a heavy sound.
As they approached a busy roundabout Simon wondered if he should just stare straight ahead and pray for the best, but the moment he glanced to his right and saw you about to pull out into two cars he had to stop it. Yanking up the hand break furiously you looked at him suddenly. “Who the fuck let you pass your test? Are you having a laugh? You could have killed us both.”
“What are you talking about?” Taking your foot off the clutch without taking it out of gear lead it to stall and you huffed. “Bloody hell. Look what you’ve made me do now…” “Good. Fuckin’ hell. Swap with me. Now.” He commanded in a rough voice. Unplugging his seat belt Simon rounded the car, angrily glaring at anyone backed-up behind them who dared to think about honking. You climbed over the centre console and took the passenger seat. “Kid, you fuckin’ terrify me…” Simon took a moment to roll back the seat from where it was uncomfortably close to the steering wheel.
You had the gall to laugh, pinching your brows together and saying. “I have no idea what I did wrong.” His hands gripped at the steering wheel and looked over to you for a second. “That is the most worrying thing…” A second later pulling out safely onto the roundabout and continuing the journey. “I always thought it would be going to war that would kill me, but I think it might actually be your driving that does it.”
Leaning over she pushed his shoulder gently. “Don’t say that.” She commanded softly, clearly the idea of him not being around was something she certainly wasn’t comfortable joking about. “Sorry.” He huffed, reaching over and squeezing her knee. “You scared me.” You scoffed and shook your head. “I’m serious. You fuckin’ really scared me. I can cope with being in danger, but not… not you.” He said, squeezing your knee again, feeling terror bubbling at the base of his spine.
Tumblr media
The night with your friend and her partner hadn’t been as bad as Simon had been expecting, it was a nice evening so you’d had a little BBQ whilst sat in their back garden. They both seemed nice enough and Simon was just happy to get a little insight into your life outside of him.
A few paces in front of him you approached your call, pulling your keys from your purse and said. “I’ll drive-” In a second Simon snatched then from your hands and wrapped his arm around your waist to yank you firmly back against his warm body. “Absolutely fuckin’ not.” You laughed as he walked you forward pressed you against the car. “I value my life, but more important I value your life.” He pressed a kiss to the side of your face. “Get in.” He smacked your rear as he moved to the other side of the car.

Babuji .. a prominent member of the Freedom Fighters for Independent India .. and how his modest home was opened for secret meetings and a place to hide, for the freedom fighters ..
In one of his conversations with me he did describe how the great freedom fighter Chandrashekhar 'Azaad' had sought refuge at his home and remained rolled up in a 'bistar band' .. बिस्तर बंद .. the 'HoldAll' of my times, a canvas type rolled packaging with straps to tie it up, inside which was laid a mattress, pillows, your shoes and other essentials for travel .. all then rolled up and tied in leather straps, which then became an essential baggage element during travel .. it would and was opened up by releasing the straps, unrolling it and viola, a ready made bed - mattress pillows and all .. open it up on the bed or floor or a train berth .. most convenient and the most important baggage material for travel .. well on train and cars and bus travels .. until the airplane arrived as the more, now common mode of travel ..
So 'Azad' remained rolled up in the 'holdall' - a most convenient and descriptive word coined for this kind of baggage essential - and secretly spent a night there at Babuji's home .. rolled up in a holdall !!
The dedication and will of the freedom fighter ! Incredible !!
Chandrashekhar 'Azad' later took on the British forces, a large contingent, in the famous Allahabad park, then known as Alfred Park, alone, hiding behind a tree, firing bullets from his pistol , until when his ammunition was exhausted and when he felt he would be caught, he ended his life behind that tree, by shooting his last bullet .. at himself .. not wanting to give himself up to the British ..
The park has now been renamed in his honour .. The Chandrashekhar Azad Park ..
I spent a large amount of time at this park, for picnics etc., and this was where the popular Allahabad Flower Show used to be held, where I went with Ma .. she won several cups for Best Garden, and Best Flower, the rose, competition !
I remember seeing that famous tree, behind which Azad took shelter and fought the British contingent ..
The park was a large expanse of green and flowers and trees right almost in the centre of the city .. a canopied structure in the middle of the park, was inhabited by a Band, every Sunday, playing old tunes of the time ..
The park also had a most well kept grass tennis court, where I saw some great International players during their tournament, organised by the Allahabad Civic authorities .. I cannot remember their names .. was too young for that .. but they were from Britain, and some European countries , I think ..
They were invited for a tea reception at Justice Mootham's residence, the then Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court ..
If my memory does not fail me .. Justice Mootham ! yes that name is correct in memory ..
7 :00 AM
a bit misleading the time , for I have been up since 4 .. loitering about in my room, nursing a muscle pulled back in spasm, unable to sleep or rest .. so a selective spray, that boasts of 'pain relief' within minutes - they all do - was generously applied and ..
And ..
Well, the discomfort remains .. ahahaha ..
🤣🤣🤣
The greetings of the New Year, the greetings for the Birthday have all been overwhelmingly large, and this has provided an enormous amount of space occupation on the mobile .. which as I try to address, is becoming a most arduous task ..
SO ..
may I just acknowledge all that have sent their wishes and greetings here and express my inadequacy in making personal responses ..
PLEASE ..
my gratitude then and my love for this ..
❤️
Laziness persists .. and that induces a temperament , which is difficult to describe ..
The absence of routine may sound odd, but routine puts and gathers the body in a way that keeps it going .. else , one never has a solution as to what can be done to occupy time .. and several essentials loose their essentiality !
Making sense ..
No ..
Well then too bad ! 🥹
Was going to suggest, you get lazy to experience and endorse my words, but that would be so ethically incorrect ..
Hence its a wish for the effervescent day ahead .. and my love 😍

Jonathan Bailey's Interview with British Vogue at the Met Gala (2024)
Tumblr media
“I’m very calm,” Wicked star Jonathan Bailey told Vogue just hours before he walked the red carpet at the Met Gala tonight. Of course, he was in a suite on the eleventh floor of The Mark at the time, “in my ivory tower”, he joked. “I hear it’s chaos downstairs… apparently there’s a two-and-a-half-hour queue for the lift!”
To the relief of fashion (and Bridgerton) fans everywhere, Bailey ultimately made it through the crush in the lobby to take up his spot on the steps of the Met tonight, wearing a white double-breasted jacket with a black satin lapel and black trousers by Loewe. So far, so classic – but this wouldn’t be a Jonathan Anderson design without a twist: in this case, the addition of a hand-painted metal peony with a “sugar crystal texture”. A straightforward nod to the dress code (“The Garden of Time”), the metal flower embellishment is also ideal “for someone who has extreme hay fever”, Bailey quipped.
The actor explained it was designed to take the place of the traditional bow tie, heaping praise on both Anderson and his stylist Emma Jade Morrison (“She’s a winner”). As for the secret flower on his trouser pocket, concealed by his white jacket? “That was my idea.”
Loewe feels like a natural choice for Bailey, who is fast becoming a fixture on Jonathan Anderson’s front rows. The designer has become the unofficial outfitter of the internet’s favourite dreamboats – think Heartstopper’s Kit Connor and Joe Locke, both of whom, like Bailey, have worn Loewe’s powder-blue sequined polo. Tonight, though, the Spanish house’s tailoring takes centre stage. “It’s stunning,” said the actor of his look. “It celebrates a sort of classic Old Hollywood minimalism, but then right at the front and centre is innovative design.”
Working with Anderson and his team over the past few months felt “organic and natural”, said Bailey. “It’s amazing to understand how someone like Jonathan works, to see how he’s inspired by art, but also [to work with] Loewe, as a fashion house that really prioritises craftsmanship. It’s really exciting: today feels very much like I’m a canvas for other people’s work – I’m taking a back seat!”
This is Bailey’s second Met Gala, so he has some experience of the famously intense red carpet. “Everyone talks about waiting to go on the red carpet – fashion purgatory,” he recalled of his first time at the ball. “But by chance I was in such a lovely little group of people that I knew, so it was actually quite relaxing.” One of those people was his Wicked co-star Michelle Yeoh. “That year I went straight from the after-parties to my flight [to resume filming], and the next day Michelle and I were sat next to each other in the make-up trailer. That was a whirlwind.”

His Last Bow
Hey Tumblr,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have 0 idea what happens in this story. Kind of hoping it's a bit like Curtain, the last Poirot story, because that's a bop. Well, it's very depressing, but I love the solution. Although I also really hope it isn't, because then Agatha Christie would have copied that and I really don't want that to be the case.
I also really want ACD to have done something insanely over the top and decisive to make it really clear that this time there would be no retconning. Like... idk, the world being invaded by aliens. Sherlock Holmes stealing the crown jewels and being executed for treason. Mycroft turning out to have been a double agent all along and destroying the entire British Empire.
I'm no longer feverish, although my lungs are still trying to propel themselves out of my body in a way that keeps leaving me a little asphyxiated, so that's fun. But no jellyfishifters this time I expect. Or sea turtles... Yeah, Idk either.
It was nine o'clock at night upon the second of August—the most terrible August in the history of the world.
Oh Watson, you sweet summer child. I bet I've seen worse Augusts. Even if Holmes does die in this one.
The sun had long set, but one blood-red gash like an open wound lay low in the distant west.
London... is now... a hellmouth?
Tumblr media
Are we not in London? Is that the city from a distance. Where are we? Why is the sky split open? What is going on?
The two famous Germans stood beside the stone parapet of the garden walk...
The only two famous Germans. Ever. You know... those two.
Oh, so we're actually in the 'Sherlock is a spy' period. Weirdly I assumed that that was only going to be referenced. But no, we're actually going there.
Tumblr media
So the red line is... the war front?
One of these was his present companion, Baron Von Herling, the chief secretary of the legation, whose huge 100-horse-power Benz car was blocking the country lane as it waited to waft its owner back to London.
Is the Baron compensating for something? Maybe.
But we're not in London and we're not near the war front, so... what is that red slash in the sky. Is it London?
This is probably not the mystery I am meant to be trying to solve. I should pay more attention to the espionage and less to the environs.
“They are not very hard to deceive,” he remarked. “A more docile, simple folk could not be imagined.”
Someone has not been down the pub when the home team is playing. Hoo boy. Docile is not a word I would use...
Tumblr media
"One's first impression is that they are entirely soft. Then one comes suddenly upon something very hard, and you know that you have reached the limit and must adapt yourself to the fact."
That is, indeed, what she said.
“Meaning British prejudice in all its queer manifestations."
Oh boy. I don't think you mean what I'd mean by those words, but yet you have still brought upon me a great sense of national shame and wincing.
Tumblr media
"I was invited to a week-end gathering at the country house of a cabinet minister. The conversation was amazingly indiscreet.”
Given the general level of OpSec shown by government workers, bankers, and just... everyone within these stories, I cannot say that this surprises me. I'm disappointed, but not surprised. The majority of government people we have met have been entire and total imbeciles in the matter of privacy, data protection and general best practices regarding secrecy.
“No, no, don't call it a pose. A pose is an artificial thing. This is quite natural. I am a born sportsman. I enjoy it.”
Ugh, I hate this guy.
“And all the time this quiet country house of yours is the centre of half the mischief in England, and the sporting squire the most astute secret-service man in Europe. Genius, my dear Von Bork—genius!”
I will say, they're commenting on other people not being discreet, and here they are just laying out everything without even a hint of subtlety. Using people's names. confirming their identities, confirming their true purposes. Unless this, in itself, is a subterfuge... They're not at a party, at least, I suppose.
“You flatter me, Baron. But certainly I may claim my four years in this country have not been unproductive. I've never shown you my little store. Would you mind stepping in for a moment?”
This all feels very Cask of Amontillado, don't you think?
Is Van Bork Sherlock?
He then closed the door behind the bulky form which followed him and carefully adjusted the heavy curtain over the latticed window. Only when all these precautions had been taken and tested did he turn his sunburned aquiline face to his guest.
Oh. My. God. Did someone just use basic security protocols to prevent someone from listening or looking in on them? Be still my beating heart. I might faint.
Tumblr media
I am so confused about who is speaking right now. I need more dialogue tags. I have lost track. These two have merged into one very confused spy with multiple personalities. Or maybe just two heads. I don't know.
“Out of date and waste paper. The Admiralty in some way got the alarm and every code has been changed."
If that wasn't Sherlock or Mycroft, then I don't know who it was because every time the Admiralty has been in these stories they have been incompetent to the point of deliberate treason.
Will come without fail to-night and bring new sparking plugs. — —Altamont.
Is Altamont Holmes?
“You see he poses as a motor expert and I keep a full garage. In our code everything likely to come up is named after some spare part. If he talks of a radiator it is a battleship, of an oil pump a cruiser, and so on. Sparking plugs are naval signals.”
I take back that gif from earlier. Don't tell people the code words. Good grief, man! You've just compromised all of those phrases. I get that you're providing exposition for the audience, but still. STILL.
"I assure you that our most pan-Germanic Junker is a sucking dove in his feelings towards England as compared with a real bitter Irish-American.”
Fair.
...at a touch from the Baron's chauffeur the great car shivered and chuckled.
Is the car alive? I don't like this description.
Tumblr media
“Those are the lights of Harwich, I suppose,” said the secretary, pulling on his dust coat.
THANK YOU!
It's Harwich... No hellmouth, just Harwich. Mystery solved.
"The heavens, too, may not be quite so peaceful if all that the good Zeppelin promises us comes true."
Oh, you mean the bustle in the hedgerow? No... don't be alarmed about that. It's just a spring clean for the May Queen. Or if you're talking about the piper, he's just leading us to reason. It's really nothing to be worried about.
...beside it, seated at a table, was a dear old ruddy-faced woman in a country cap. She was bending over her knitting and stopping occasionally to stroke a large black cat upon a stool beside her. “That is Martha, the only servant I have left.” The secretary chuckled. “She might almost personify Britannia,” said he, “with her complete self-absorption and general air of comfortable somnolence."
Is Martha Holmes?
Honestly, that makes a lot of sense.
Or Holmes could be the kitty cat.
Tumblr media
It was a new experience to him, the silence and darkness of his widespread house, for his family and household had been a large one. It was a relief to him, however, to think that they were all in safety and that, but for that one old woman who had lingered in the kitchen, he had the whole place to himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DANCE PARTY TIME
“You can give me the glad hand to-night, mister,” he cried. “I'm bringing home the bacon at last.”“The signals?”“Same as I said in my cable. Every last one of them, semaphore, lamp code, Marconi—a copy, mind you, not the original."
No. No. No.
This is not how you do a treasonous handover of government secrets. I don't care how empty you think the goddamned house is. You don't say the actual thing. YOU USE THE CODEWORDS. THIS IS WHY YOU HAVE CODES. YOU UTTER NUMPTIES!
Fuck you both. You're morons. What even is this? This isn't espionage. This is slapstick.
Good lord.
I... I despair.
I guess if you're this good at it, then it's no wonder that even the bloody Admiralty managed to get a clue.
Mycroft's probably been feeding you information for years, you muppets.
It's the incompetence that gets to me, it really is. If you're going to be moustache twirling evil German spies then at least have the self-respect and decency to be good at it.
This is pathetic.
Tumblr media
The Irish-American had entered the study and stretched his long limbs from the armchair. He was a tall, gaunt man of sixty, with clear-cut features and a small goatee beard which gave him a general resemblance to the caricatures of Uncle Sam. A half-smoked, sodden cigar hung from the corner of his mouth, and as he sat down he struck a match and relit it.
Oh yeah, this is Holmes, isn't it?
You couldn't even pretend to be good at being a traitor?
“So it's not quite as simple as you thought. It was four years ago that I had it made, and what do you think I chose for the word and figures?”
O
h
m
y
g
o
d
Tell me you're not about to do what I think you're about to do.
Please.
Tell me you have one braincell in your tiny head. PLEASE. You cannot be this dumb. YOU CANNOT BE!
“Well, I chose August for the word, and 1914 for the figures, and here we are.”
Tumblr media
And you're being dumb by trying to show off how smart you are. That's the worst kind.
“How could they have got on to Steiner?” he muttered. “That's the worst blow yet.”
You literally just told a man your safe combination. I don't know what to tell you, my dude. Maybe you're just bad at this.
Then he sat dazing for a moment in silent amazement at a small blue book which lay before him. Across the cover was printed in golden letters Practical Handbook of Bee Culture. Only for one instant did the master spy glare at this strangely irrelevant inscription. The next he was gripped at the back of his neck by a grasp of iron, and a chloroformed sponge was held in front of his writhing face.
Tumblr media
“Another glass, Watson!” said Mr. Sherlock Holmes as he extended the bottle of Imperial Tokay. The thickset chauffeur, who had seated himself by the table, pushed forward his glass with some eagerness.
Didn't call the chauffeur being Watson. Discounted him as Holmes for being too thickset. I guess since it's indicated Watson might have written this one I should have thought about Watson as well. Genuinely didn't think he'd be in this one, though.
"There is no one in the house except old Martha, who has played her part to admiration."
So Martha was working for Holmes this whole time. I think she wins the prize for being the best spy in the story.
"I shall no doubt reappear at Claridge's to-morrow as I was before this American stunt—I beg your pardon, Watson, my well of English seems to be permanently defiled—before this American job came my way.”
Oh no! Holmes used the word 'stunt' how scandalously unEnglish of him!
"The fact is, Watson, that this gentleman upon the sofa was a bit too good for our people."
Tumblr media
Guess the Admiralty is worse than even I gave them credit for.
The last remark was addressed to Von Bork himself, who after much gasping and blinking had lain quietly listening to Holmes's statement. He broke out now into a furious stream of German invective, his face convulsed with passion.
No... no... Holmes. You're not monologuing in front of the enemy prisoner. Don't do that. I believed in you.
"And yet I live and keep bees upon the South Downs.”
...don't tell him where you live...
I give up.
Tumblr media
“And most of that information came through you,” he cried. “What is it worth? What have I done? It is my ruin forever!” “It is certainly a little untrustworthy,” said Holmes. “It will require some checking and you have little time to check it. Your admiral may find the new guns rather larger than he expects, and the cruisers perhaps a trifle faster.”
god fucking dammit
Why are you telling him about the misinformation? The misinformation is meant to misinform. That's why it's called misinformation. You're undoing half of the work you did.
I... guys... guys, I just can't.
“My dear sir, if you did anything so foolish you would probably enlarge the two limited titles of our village inns by giving us ‘The Dangling Prussian’ as a signpost. The Englishman is a patient creature, but at present his temper is a little inflamed, and it would be as well not to try him too far."
Did he just threaten Van Bork with hanging. By referencing a possible pub name? A+ threat, but yikes.
The two friends chatted in intimate converse for a few minutes, recalling once again the days of the past, while their prisoner vainly wriggled to undo the bonds that held him.
They just... they just left him alone.
And went and had a chat.
I don't even know why I thought they'd drive him away immediately. Why would they?
Tumblr media
"I have a check for five hundred pounds which should be cashed early, for the drawer is quite capable of stopping it if he can.”
Such a weird line to end this on. OK then Holmes. Go cash your cheque.
And that was the last of the short stories... It didn't quite have the same poignancy as Curtain. But it certainly gave me a lot to talk about.
This has been a really fun year and I've loved writing these up - and spending far too long finding gifs and sometimes making my own memes when I couldn't find the precise thing I needed to say.
If you've read all of these, I have no idea why, but Hi! 2023 was certainly a year, wasn't it? Thanks to all of you. It's been really fun reading comments and learning things when people added to the notes to answer questions I'd asked.
I hear we're doing the novels next year. I have definitely actually read all of those. But I do get them all mixed up, and I will have forgotten a lot of them. I think I also signed up for another substack, but right now I can't even remember which one. That'll be a fun surprise.
Hope you all had a good, or at least not terrible, 2023. And I hope we all have a better 2024.
Happy (almost) New Year!

Here's what british shops the ghouls would work in
Mountain - garden centre. he talks to all the old ladies about the best soil for this season and has all the best recommendations for beginners, he'll talk for hours if you don't escape
Rain - sea life aquarium. takes people on guided tours and uses his water ghoulness to communicate with the fishies and get them to put on a show (only if the visitors are nice, otherwise he asks the fish to splash and scare the customers)
Cirrus - pets at home. doesn't really agree with their practices on how they keep the animals so she infiltrated pets at home as an employee and steals any animals she thinks are suffering :') cumulus wasn't happy with it at first but she's getting used to their home doubling as a rescue centre
Phantom - one of those travelling circuses. we've all seen how bendy new bug is, it only feels fitting that he travels around showing off his skills
Swiss - tesco security guard and a really shit one at that. he always gets distracted thinking about what meal deal he's going to get on his break and forgets he's meant to be doing loss prevention
Cumulus - kfc manager. she has that authority that sweaty 16 year olds who work there actually respect. because of that it's the best kfc in the area
Dew - currys pc world. dew is a hardcore pc nerd and you can't change my mind. loves talking to little kids getting their first set up. hates giving tech support to old people who refuse to learn
Aether - corner shop. just has bossman vibes honestly. definitely has one of those signs thats like 'only two schoolchildren allowed in at once' after a particularly harrowing vape incident
Aurora - premier inn receptionist. kind if you're nice to her but a real bitch if you treat her the wrong way. will cancel people's pre-paid breakfasts if they piss her off :)

NETFLIX: EVERYTHING NOW
Tumblr media
[Trigger warning: the show is centred around the main characters recovery from her ed so that’s mentioned in this post.]
I am in love with this show. I just put it in as something to watch in the background whilst I did some light work and now I’m a day behind on it because I couldn’t. Stop. Watching! (and I couldn’t see the keyboard through my tears 😭).
I don’t even know where to start- it’s been so long since I’ve seen a show and seen myself in so many of the characters and seen people I know in those character as well. In an emotional sense, a situational sense and a physical sense I literally found Cam so jarring just because he reminds me so much of two people i know.
The Script Dialogue ?
🎶 For the first time in forever 🎶 the script, written about gen z, using terms and reference of the youth, didn’t. Feel. Forced. IN ADDITION, they used reference that weren’t just globally relevant but phrases and references that are very British/Londoner gen z!
“Are you not embarrrrassssed? This is emberaasssing” - perfectly used.
I also love how there’s no pressure to announce their sexuality, everyone is just them. I’m straight, so my opinion on this means nothing in comparison but I love that. l can see why coming out is important to many and a needed process to go through but I also know many people would rather not and just love and live and from an ally’s perspective I feel like this perspective of LGBTQ+ stories are so refreshing. The kids are freely figuring themselves out with no judgement, as they should be.
The Music Choices ?
First things first because I need to point this out for people not from London who have or are looking to watch the show. These kids come from rich families- and I mean RICH. They’re not from old money wealth (like Young Royals) but they live in modern detached houses located in zone 1 more or less (that’s already worth like £1M+ range), have cars that I know for a fact definitely don’t abide by ULEZ so they defo pay extra, AND have back gardens??? Mad.
But why is this relevant? To be honest I don’t know how to word this but, the house music at the house parties, the drops of garage, when Cam was in his home and working out and they played Cench, my first thought was “Cam is defo the type of boy to know all the words to all Cench’s songs and then rap the words with vim, as if he’s from ends 😂” (translation: “ends” = “the hood”, think Top Boy).
The music choices accurately depict today UK youth and it’s not just music that fits their lives or their characters progression but instead rounds out the characters. For instance I listen to Pop Smoke despite not being able to relate to a lot of what he’s saying as I’m not from NY or live that lifestyle, but will I scream the lyrics? Yes. And that’s how I feel it is with these characters. The soundtrack was like a dip into their own spotify accounts!
AND WHEN THEY PLAYED “MY HOOD” BY RAY BLK ? I cried. That was my “bus ride to school” song in secondary school.
The Character Development ?
I haven’t routed for and been annoyed / pissed off to high heavens by / cringed for / cried for a bunch of characters in so long. I don’t want to say more about that because the show is very plot character driven and I don’t think I can explain what I mean without spoiling it.
What Got Me About The Show ?
Through the show I came to the conclusion that even when I was mad at the characters I couldn’t be completely mad because I knew where they were coming from and I knew they were struggling but still mad because it didn’t excuse or make it okay that they spread the pain. The only character that hadn’t done that I believe is Mia’s little brother (even though I myself really wanted him to give everyone what for).
As I am not someone with an ED I can’t fully relate and my two cents on this is worth nothing in comparison to those who have had the presence of an ED in their life in some way. But from my perspective I do believe that this show is very educational and brings great awareness to the mental side of it all. It’s very raw and real and unapologetically what it is.
I don’t really know how to end these things and tbf but I love this show and needed to express it especially since no one around me has watched it yet 😭.

do you mind sharing your character descriptions? they’re so on point and very accurate 🥹🥹 i need em (farleigh’s specifically) keep up the good work <33
i’ll put my farleigh description under the cut ! gets a little repetitive i just like to make sure the basic info is really drilled into the bot .. i also put my personal headcanons in them sometimes just to be self indulgent lollol
NAME “farleigh james start.” NICKNAME “farls” DOB “october 1987.” PRONOUNS “he/him.” ORIENTATION “pansexual” ETHNICITY “farleigh is biracial. white british on his mother’s side and african-american on his father’s side.” HAIR “dark brown, tight 4c curly hair.” EYES “brown.” HEIGHT “6’4”” CHARACTER TRAITS “snarky” + “judgemental” + “witty” + “fun” + “charismatic” + “gossipy” + “sharp-tongued” + “bitchy” + “ebullient” + “perceptive” + “self-defensive” + “nonchalant, laidback” STYLE “farleigh is nearly always dressed head-to-toe in gucci, or vintage pieces from his mother’s friends in new york, opting for stylish and colourful prints and fashion-forward outfits.” VICES “cigarettes” + “recreational drug use” + “alcohol” BIRTHPLACE “new york city, usa.” CURRENT HOME “saltburn, his uncle’s ancestral estate in the northamptonshire countryside, near kettering. saltburn has over one hundred rooms, is packed full of artefacts and priceless artwork (though these things don’t excite farleigh, he finds them rather boring or ugly), yet looks lived-in, decorated in his aunt’s bohemian style. farleigh’s bedroom is rather small, smaller than most of the guest rooms. saltburn’s gardens span a good few acres, there’s a pool and a large pond, along with a hedge maze with a towering minotaur statue in the centre. saltburn is known in upper class circles for the catton family’s raucous parties that boast extensive and interesting guest lists, from aristocrats to oil tycoons to pop stars and actors.” + “also living at webbe college, oxford university. a single dormitory, red curtains and carpet.” LANGUAGE(S) “english, in an american accent, though some words have a british inflection due to farleigh’s time living in england” + “some latin, learned at public school.” PARENTS “frederica catton. only daughter and youngest child of anthony catton VII and katharine drescfield. raised at saltburn, among british aristocracy. had a party girl phase that lasted too long, moved to new york city at nineteen. gave birth to farleigh after an affair with a man who left her promptly afterwards (with a large chunk of her money). her brother james eventually cut her off because she was ‘pissing her money up the wall’, and offered to take farleigh in at saltburn and pay for public education for him in england. frederica & farleigh’s relationship is rather unconventional, more like friends than mother & son.” OTHER “aunt elspeth catton, early fourties, ex-model, haughty and a gossip, will always bring the conversation back to herself, though she thinks herself incredibly empathetic” + “uncle sir james catton, mid sixties, lord and landowner. eccentric, interested in ancient arts and literature, takes care of his garden more than his children, impersonal as a father.” + “cousin venetia catton. ‘vee’ as farleigh often calls her. 21, one year older than farleigh. venetia is fun and sharp-tongued, haughty, a proper posh girl. bleached hair, chipped nail polish, always in garish outfits. venetia is ‘secretly’ bullimic, but everyone knows, but emotional vulnerability is not a catton trait. aunt elspeth refers to venetia’s eating disorder as ‘fingers for pudding’. venetia’s relationship with their parents is strained, particularly with her mother elspeth.” + “cousin, felix catton. felix is the same age as farleigh, and they both attend webbe college at oxford. the world seems to revolve around felix. beautiful and fairly dopey, always has a crowd of girls (& boys alike) surrounding him. felix is flakey, fun, ebullient.” + “farleigh stands at the edge of his family, more of an outsider than his cousins but still has a seat at the table. the catton’s are typical british aristocracy with repressed emotions and unspoken rules to suit, and farleigh has been kicked out of saltburn a few times, but his uncle & aunt always invite him back.”
MORE… “farleigh is the son of frederica catton.” + “frederica was financially cut off by her brother, james, when farleigh was young. james offered to pay for farleigh’s ‘proper’ education in england and let him live in the ancestral home, saltburn.” + “farleigh grew up going between saltburn, in the northamptonshire countryside, and new york city, where his mother lives in an opulent apartment she can hardly pay for.” + “saltburn has a lot of staff, footmen and cooks and housekeepers, who the catton’s seem to notice, except their ‘chief of staff’ duncan (felix and venetia call him ‘jeeves’ behind his back). duncan is seemingly everywhere and nowhere at the same time, he’s a diligent worker and loves the family and saltburn as if they’re his own.” + “farleigh knows the names of their footmen, joshua and liam, and has complicated feelings considering the footmen are both black, like farleigh.” + “childhood at saltburn was raucous fun. it’s nothing short of a castle, and the best playground he could’ve imagined. farleigh, venetia and felix would entertain themselves by playing indoor cricket, throwing mud at each other, stealing wine from the wine cellar.” + “farleigh did well with schoolwork, but would often get himself into trouble (or suck off one of the teachers) which led him to being expelled from half the public schools in the country.” + “despite his troublemaking tendencies, farleigh managed to get good grades and got into oxford to study english literature at webbe college.” + “farleigh uses humour and bitchiness as self-defence. he is used to teetering on the edge of his position in his family and social standing, so he knows when to stay quiet and when to stay snarky.” LIVING… “between oxford university and saltburn” + “farleigh is studying at oxford university, webbe college, where he is reading english literature, where he’s often late due to late night parties and hangovers, enjoying the social aspect of university more than the education. though he does enjoy the debates during tutorials with professor ware.” INTERESTS… “having fun” + “farleigh likes music like bloc party, busted, arctic monkeys, the killers, blur, oasis, pulp, arcade fire, mgmt, lcd soundsystem, britney spears, girls aloud, the sugababes.”

Hestercombe House - Somerset County - England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿
Hestercombe House is a historic country house in the parish of West Monkton in the Quantock Hills, near Taunton in Somerset, England. The house is a Grade II* listed building and the estate is Grade I listed on the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in England.
Originally built in the 16th century, the house was used as the headquarters of the British 8th Corps in the Second World War. Somerset County Council assumed ownership in 1951 and use the property as an administrative centre. Hestercombe House served as the Emergency Call Centre for the Somerset Area of Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service until March 2012.
Hestercombe House is surrounded by gardens which have been restored to Gertrude Jekyll's original plans (1904–07) and have made it "one of the best Jekyll-Lutyens gardens open to the public on a regular basis", visited by approximately 70,000 people per year. The site also includes a 0.08 hectare (8,600 sq ft) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Somerset, notified in 2000. The site is used as a roost site by lesser horseshoe bats.
The house was enlarged and altered in the 18th century, but this work is no longer visible beneath the refronting and enlargement works carried out around 1875 for Edward Portman, 1st Viscount Portman, who had acquired it in 1873
The house today appears an assemblage of several architectural styles popular during the Victorian era. While the overall design and air could be described as Italianate, also present in the same entrance facade are examples of high Victorian Gothic, such as an Italianate seigneurial tower confused in design with a campanile tower. This tower complete with a glazed loggia is crowned by a French-style mansard roof with oversized chimneys masquerading as Renaissance ornament. The centrepiece of the same facade is a porte-cochère designed in a heavy neoclassical style.
The Gardens and grounds are open to the public.

So, haven't been posting much today. There's a reason for that:
Tumblr media
I'm out of Ireland! Hello from Manchester, UK!
Off to a great start this morning, with the window seat next to mine being empty for the flight, and thus mine.
Landing also gave me a look at an Airbus A380:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And after arriving in Manchester, I had a nice walk around the City Centre. There's a statue to the blinded veterans of WWI outside the main train station:
Tumblr media
Partook of the local cuisine:
Tumblr media
Found a school that in any other city of the world would be massively over-specialised, but here you genuinely have options:
Tumblr media
I ended up wandering through Manchester's Chinatown, a living reminder of Manchester's history as a major port city of the British Empire:
Tumblr media
And arrived at my destination: The Gay Village, which is kind've stacked on top of Chinatown. Better historians than me can probably explain that better than I can.
There's a lovely little park called Sackville Gardens, that contains several memorials. Here's The Beacon of Hope, a memorial of those who've died as a result of the AIDS epidemic:
Tumblr media
Here's a memorial to Manchester resident Alan Turing:
Tumblr media
And here's where the Memorial to the Victims of Transphobic Violence used to be, until somebody burned it down during Manchester Pride 2022. The design of the replacement was revealed a couple months ago.
Tumblr media
By the time I'd finished my walk, and had some lunch, it was half past four and all the museums close at five. So I hung around the city centre a bit longer, and then headed back to my hotel.
So that was day. Quite fun. Tomorrow, I go do what I'm here to do.

No man is a leader until he is ratified in the minds and hearts of his men.
- Field Marshal Sir Bill Slim, 1st Viscount Slim (1891-1970)
I’m not the only one, as an army veteran, to have gotten goosebumps when the assembled soldiers of all the regiments of the British armed forces cheered their new king and commander-in-chief. I never felt more proud to have had the privilege to serve in the best army in the world.
The newly crowned King Charles III inspected thousands of military personnel who lined up in the lush gardens of Buckingham Palace as he returned from Westminster Abbey. King Charles and Queen Camilla stepped out onto the West Terrace steps to look upon the assembled four thousand men and women who hadn’t faced him throughout the coronation procession but had led the way. This was their opportunity to see their sovereign face to face. And it was glorious. The gusto of the ‘hip hip hurrays’ was incredible, more so because it was sincere.
Those who have served in the British armed services - and those relatives and friends who have someone they know who serves or has served - know how deep the bond is between the royal family and the regiments that make up the British army as well as of course the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force. The royals have faithfully served as colonel-in-chiefs of many regiments and corps, and they have taken the responsibility seriously.
When he was the Prince of Wales, Charles was the colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps and he took particular interest in the welfare of the men and women of the regiments. He was very personable and appreciative of the service of every soldier and officer did, and in return he earned the loyalty and respect of every serving soldier I knew.
While King Charles III may be the head of the whole of the UK's Armed Forces, there is one company with which the sovereign has a special connection. The King's Company Grenadier Guards have a role at the centre of every coronation, but their relationship with His Majesty is far more personal than that - he is also their Company Commander.
One of the oldest bodies of troops in the Army, the King's Company was founded in 1656, even pre-dating the Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660. Following King Charles II's defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651, he escaped to Holland with the help of loyalists, who hid him and helped him throughout his exile and with his plan to return to the throne. From these loyalists, the King created his most trusted personal troops, that would go on to become the Life Guards and the Grenadier Guards. King Charles II ordered that the command of the first company of the first regiment of Foot Guards would be reserved for him, and they would be known as The King's Own Company.
In 1656, the exiled King Charles II issued the first Colour bearing his cypher to The King's Own Company. Every monarch since has presented their company with their own Royal Standard. King Charles III presented a new Colour bearing his cypher interlaced and reversed with his crown to The King's Company.
In keeping with tradition, this new Royal Standard is of heavily gold embroidered and tasselled silk and it is much larger than the standard regimental Colours seen elsewhere on parade in the modern Army - the fabric alone is more than 6ft square.
The King's Company Colour, Royal Standard of the Regiment, has personal significance to both King Charles and Queen Camilla, as Her Majesty is the new Royal Colonel Grenadier Guards. A smaller version of the Royal Standard of the regiment is also commissioned and is proudly flown above the Captain's office desk in barracks or on the wall of the operations room if deployed abroad.  The smaller version is simply known as the Company Camp Colour and will be laid upon the coffin after the monarch's death and buried, as happened with the late Queen Elizabeth.
A lesser-known fact is that The King's Company does not have a sitting company commander, because the reigning monarch vested the executive authority for the daily administration of the company to a trusted and favoured subject, the appointment being designated the Captain Lieutenant – the title means quite literally to hold or 'tenant' the Captaincy, in lieu of the King. Shortened nowadays to simply 'The Captain' (who holds the rank of Major), this appointment has persisted for 367 years with 136 Captains over time leading the company on a Sovereign's behalf.
Due to this arrangement and to prevent any confusion, The King's Company second in command (who holds the rank of captain) is referred to as 'The Second Captain.' Within the wider regiment, all members of the company are collectively known as and nicknamed The Monarch's Mob.
The new sovereign assumed command of The Sovereign's Company on accession, meaning that on the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, the company's name changed from The Queen's Company back to The King's Company. The connection of the sovereign to the company is a close one beyond the public ceremonial, as the Captain will update the sovereign regularly on the company’s activities and operational commitments. Every Christmas, the King will receive The Captain's Statement, a brief annual report, along with a leather-bound photo album containing photographs of The Company's year. The soldiers who serve under the Captain are among the fittest and most able Guardsmen in the regiment and must demonstrate the highest values and standards and aspire to excellence.
It was fitting that it was the King’s Company that led the three cheers to the newly coronated King.
Vivat Regina Camilla! Vivat Rex Carolus! Vivat! Vivat! Vivat!

“The Zone of Interest”
“The Zone of Interest” 2023 War/Crime is not like other Holocaust films. Yet it is still rooted firmly in historical realities about the Holocaust and the minute details of how the Hösses lived comfortably alongside it, ignoring the mass suffering their father was orchestrating. The real Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss, and his wife, Hedwig, strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.
Directed by British filmmaker Jonathan Glazer, Glazer and his team did years of research before filming to capture the tonal disconnect of the moment, in perhaps cinematic distillation yet of German philosopher Hannah Arendt’s famous proclamation about “the banality of evil.” The film initially appears to follow an unexceptional German family in the 1940s and their idyllic lifestyle in a cute cottage near a river. A father (Christian Friedel), a mother (Sandra Hüller) and their five children host parties, go swimming, tend to their garden and read bedtime stories at night.

Only gradually does the film reveal that this family’s seemingly idyllic home is located directly adjacent to the Auschwitz death camp — and that the patriarch is none other than Rudolf Höss, that camp’s real-life commandant, who directly oversaw the systematic murder of more than a million Jews, and perhaps many more.
Audiences never see these murders, but they hear the horrific evidence of the slaughter: screams, gunshots and the machinery of the gas chambers.

Glazer, whose previous films include “Under the Skin,” “Sexy Beast” and “Birth,” adapted his script for “The Zone of Interest” based on the late British author Martin Amis’ 2014 novel of the same title. But the film differs considerably from the novel and has a greater basis in historical fact.
While Amis’ novel followed multiple plotlines, including a love triangle, set in and around Auschwitz, Glazer’s script stripped away everything except the Höss family at its centre. He also made his film about the real Höss family, whereas Amis (who died as the film was premiering at Cannes) had rendered fictional versions of them.
Glazer also went further, hiring researchers at the Auschwitz-Birkenau museum in Poland to look into details of the Höss family’s lifestyle.
The film was shot near the museum, in a formerly dilapidated house that the production crew transformed into a replica of the actual Höss home. He was also, inspired by sources like Timothy Snyder’s “Black Earth: The Holocaust As History And Warning,” and the writings of Gillian Rose.

Rudolf Höss was the Nazi commandant who oversaw the mass killing operations at Auschwitz-Birkenau, having been posted there from 1940 until nearly the end of the war. Before Auschwitz, Höss — born Catholic and a World War I veteran who became a committed Nazi from the beginning of Hitler’s rise to power — was posted at the Dachau and Sachsenhausen camps, where he learned the tricks of the trade of mass death.
Within the Nazi upper ranks, Rudolf Höss was considered, according to an SS report, a “true pioneer” for his mass-killing innovations at the camp, which became the deadliest site of the war under his watch. After the Final Solution began being implemented in 1941, Höss installed gas chambers and ovens at Auschwitz capable of killing thousands of people every hour and disposing of their bodies; from then on, the camp was a brutally efficient system of death. He was also the one who introduced the poisonous gas Zyklon B to the camps, impressing Adolf Eichmann.

As portrayed in the film, Rudolf Höss was briefly transferred to a more administrative role within the Nazi Party in 1943 — a move that the family gardener has testified angered Rudolf’s wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), because she believed the family had everything they needed at Auschwitz. (Glazer has said that his need to understand this argument between the two of them was the driving force behind the film.) However, he was reassigned to the camp the following year to oversee the mass extermination of Hungarian Jewry in an operation named after him.
He went into hiding after the war, but was tracked down by Hanns Alexander, a German Jewish Nazi hunter, and stood trial in Poland in 1947, where he was sentenced to death.
Höss admitted to his role in the genocide in a written statement in which he coldly describes the “improvements” his Auschwitz team made over similar extermination efforts at Treblinka — using the same dispassionate, removed cadence spoken by the film’s version of Höss.
Höss was hanged in Auschwitz at the age of 45, on gallows he himself had ordered constructed at the camp.
The bulk of “The Zone of Interest” focuses not on the mass extermination, but rather on the particulars of Höss’ family life and how this Nazi clan mentally separated the two. As in the film, the real Höss family lived in an impeccably maintained two-story house that bordered Auschwitz: They could see the prisoner blocks and crematoria from their upstairs window.

Rudolf and his wife Hedwig saw themselves as, fulfilling the Nazi ideal. While Rudolf went to work at the camps every morning, Hedwig busied herself with her social life and proudly accepted the moniker of “Queen of Auschwitz.”

Historian Thomas Harding wrote about how they stocked their closets with clothes and jewellery seized from the Jews who were exterminated, and with the help of a large waitstaff, including some Auschwitz prisoners, they kept a garden, often entertained guests and swam and canoed on the nearby Sola River with their kids. (One scene in the film depicts Rudolf hurrying his kids away from the river once he realised it is full of human ash from the camps.)
After Rudolf was caught and hanged after the war, his family was free to go, but they were shunned by German society. One of Rudolf's daughters, Brigitte, would later move to the US, and her mother came to visit her frequently. She worked for decades at a Washington, DC fashion store owned by Jews who had fled the Nazis after Kristallnacht [the night of broken glass] .
