Chris was sitting at the kitchen table, sipping idly on a capri sun and scrolling away on his phone. He was blissfully unaware of his surroundings, he didn’t even hear the sound of your footsteps approaching.

Chris looks up when he hears your voice.

“Hey guys, can you watch my boyfriend for me, please? I’ll be back quick, I promise, I just need to go and grab something.

Chris watches you say, smiling at your phone camera, propping it up against the vase of tulips. He looks up at you confused, but you just place a kiss in his hair and smile once more at the camera before leaving the kitchen.

“Uhm,” Chris mumbles out, looking confusedly at the camera.

His confusion only lasts a moment though before he starts speaking. “So I was up late last night, and I stumbled upon this video about analog horror and liminal spaces and the backrooms and such. And then I found this one guys youtube channel and I’ve been binging his videos since like three am. Dude, the backrooms are fucking freaky. I just know they would make Nick paranoid as fuck, so I definitely have to show them to him,” he says with a laugh.

He reaches for his capri sun. “Oh! I’ve been on such a capri sun kick for the past like week. Pepsi is still my number one though,” he says, making a heart with his hands.

“Hey, how do people make the heart with their fingers? Y/N can do it, and she’s tried teaching me, but I just can’t seem to get it!” Chris huffs out, attempting to make a heart with his fingers. He stares down at them trying to bend them into the shape he’s seen you do multiple times.

He lets out a huff, looking back up at the camera, and letting his hands fall onto the table. “See, I just can’t seem to get it!”

“Oh! Oh! We went out to eat yesterday for dinner, and,” Chris cuts himself off with a little giggle, “and we witnessed this guy scrape all the toppings off his pizza and then stack the pieces up on the tray. I’ve never in my twenty years seen someone do that!”

Chris looks up when hears you approaching.

You lean over his shoulder. “Hey, I’m back, thanks for watching him guys. I hope he wasn’t too much trouble.”

Chris looks up at you offended by this statement, but you just smile down at him, and place a hand in his hair, reaching with the other to end your recording.

warnings: maybe slight hurt/comfort, but mostly fluff

a/n: Couldn't exactly go the full comforting route in Mona's path, bc let's be honest. That girl is too proud to show even a little bit of weakness or vulnerability, but this should do as well.

Furina

Even though Furina had promised herself not to hide behind a facade any longer, there were times she instinctively fell back on her old habits, the 500 year old autopilot that made it possible for her to keep her secret for so long not disappearing overnight. So when she finally closed the doors to her apartment, only to immediately turn around, lean onto them and let gravity do its job until she had slid down to a sitting position, Furina finally closed her eyes before letting out a heavy sigh she had held back for far too long.

“That was a big one. Want to talk about it?” Your voice suddenly rang out, causing her eyes to snap open and quickly land on your silhouette in the hallway as she struggled to leap back up, embarrassment flaming up in her as she tried her best to play it off as if nothing happened, only for her to end up leaning awkwardly against the door.

“Want to talk about what?” Furina shot back immediately, only to silently cringe at the way her words came out, putting on a smile as she slowly took off her shoes and coat and made her way over to the living room, being closely followed by you.

“If you don’t want to talk about it, it’s also fine. Can I take your hand for a bit?” You eventually stated with an understanding smile, grabbing her head once she gave you a nod and starting to massage it by pressing your thumbs against different spots.

It wasn’t like Furina didn’t want to tell you… actually getting her complaints off her chest probably wouldn’t feel so bad. There was nothing stopping her except old habits and the fear something bad might happen once she opened up, that she inherited from her “former life” as Fontaine’s Archon.

“ No, I want to. But I’ll warn you. It might be a long and ultimately boring tale, so are you sure you want to list–” Furina interrupted her melancholic monologue when you pressed against a particular point on her hand, causing her to suddenly yelp in pain as you briefly stopped and looked up at her once again, your face asking her if you should stop. Just like with her opening up, your hand-massage was painful, yet also felt… pleasant and before long she signaled you to continue before reopening her mouth. “–so are you sure you want to listen to it?”

Without a moment of hesitation you responded, giving her a determined nod as you continued to carefully massage the same spot until stopped being painful, showing Furina one last encouraging smile until her complaints and worries started to pour out of her mouth. The former Archon talking until she felt the corners of her mouth dry up, with you intently listening to each and every one of her words.

…Maybe being more open every once in a while didn’t feel too bad.

Mona

Being an Astrologer was what Mona had always dreamed of being, so when it came to it, she wasn’t scared of pouring every single second of her free time into her work, even when chances were her research would reach a dead-end. Because even with fate ordaining everything that ever happened or still lied in the future, there was no way of knowing how things were going to turn out without at least giving them a shot.

So having her the last couple of weeks worth of work turned out to be for nothing when it became clear it wasn’t going anywhere was nothing Mona was unfamiliar with. It was simply a part of her job after all… but even though the great Astrologer Mona Megistus would never admit to being bothered by setbacks, you knew her better than to fall for her unaffected facade.

“Do you have ingredients at home?” You suddenly asked in the middle of your walk, immediately gaining Mona’s attention as she quickly got lost in thought, trying to remember what food she had used up and what still remained, only to eventually give up and shrug her shoulders, letting out a small sigh as she straightened her hat.

“There might still be some left. I can’t say for sure though, keeping stock of my supplies wasn’t exactly something I kept in mind these last few days,” she admitted only for you to quickly whip around your head, a smile adorning your lips as you came up with a suggestion.

“Let’s go out and eat something! That’s something we didn’t do in quite a while.” Considering Mona’s thoughtful look and how she paused in her tracks for a few seconds, it was fair to say that she wasn’t completely against your proposal, even if you were sure it would still require a lot of convincing to get her to finally agree.

“I’m not sure. Going out to eat when you could just as well buy ingredients and cook something is a waste of money isn’t it?” She hesitantly responded, still pondering as her fingers continued to scratch her chin. Truth be told. You couldn’t agree with her more. You had recently spent a lot of your money on things that in hindsight didn’t exactly prove to be the wisest investments, but even so, you felt as if it was your duty to get Mona to eat something tasty today, even if it meant eating nothing but bread and butter for a few days.

You knew Mona better than to not notice how demoralized she seemed the last few days, her sudden mood change and her increase in free time coinciding too well for it to mean anything except her latest research turning out to be for naught. Of course you knew better than to confront her directly about it… something that would only lead to Mona getting defensive as she’d deny feeling down about anything, too proud and stubborn to open up. And so, the only option left was for you to do what you did best.

“I know… But you’ve been so busy these last few weeks so I couldn’t see you all that much and... I’ve missed you,” you explained while trying your best impression of a puppy, “So can we please go out today?” When you saw Mona’s face heat up slightly as she quickly glanced around the two of you, looking if there was anyone in earshot, you knew your plan turned out to be a success, having to do your best to stop your lips from curling up into a smile when she let out a yet another deep sigh. 

“Fine, but stop saying embarrassing things. We’re in public.”

do you watch anime all the time? yeah, when you have the free time. he does too. sometimes both of you even cuddle together on the couch and binge watch a new show he or you have mentioned. you take a liking to certain characters, he can see a pattern, and gush over them occasionally during a scene where they pop up. for instance, you both are watching chainsaw man. he doesn’t know how, but you fell in “love” with the character aki. are tsundere men you’re type? is he tsundere?

“kook,” you spoke out, using your upper strength to push yourself off to sit on the countertop.

he hums in response.

you sigh, “baby, i just want to see what you’d look like. come on, a bad ass, game lover, hitman.” you expressed, he doesn’t have to look at you to see that you have those hopeful, beaming eyes. because he knows. he falls for them every time.

jungkook’s ramen is done and he takes the pot off the burner with a cork pot holder in his other hand to sit at the table. “why do you want to see me dress up as him so bad? you’ve never asked me to dress up as any of the other characters you’ve liked.”

you bite your lip, nervously. “yeah, cause i know you would’ve said no and i was too shy to ask. but kook, you’ll literally cosplay this man to a T!” imagining your boyfriend dressed up as suwa rei, from buddy daddies, an anime you recently started. one that popped up on your tiktok and you had found the plot quite interesting.

you realized you’re being ignored when jungkook slurps up a mouthful of noodles and is making angry noises as he chews.

huffing and jumping down from the counter. “fine, i’m going to assume you are thinking about it right now and don’t want to make your cute girlfriend said so i’ll ask you again later.” you ruffle the top of his messy, curly head and leave the kitchen to let him eat peacefully.

you had honestly forgot about it, a couple hours have passed and you’re finishing up an assignment you completely forgot that was due tomorrow as soon as you step foot into the class. you were in your room, sitting on your bed, back resting against a pillow against the headboard as you were quickly typing half-assed answers.

you assumed jungkook was showering, hearing the water running and some noises echo out from the door. he wasn’t crying for help, so all was good and you continued your work.

“babe?” jungkook calls out from the bathroom.

still typing but responding nonetheless, “yeah?”

“can you close your eyes?” your fingers pause above the keyboard, your head turning towards your bathroom door as you spot his feet’s silhouette.

you told your head, confused. “why?”

“just do it.”

“okay,” you do as you were told. “i can no longer see.” you responded, making jungkook giggle slightly which made the corners of your lips turn upward a bit.

after a few seconds of silence you hear the door open.

you hear him huff, “ok, open them now.” he mumbled, loud enough for you to hear.

slowly opening your eyes as you are met with your boyfriend standing before you, his hair slightly damp from the shower he just took, assuming he towel dried it. he’s dressed neck down in a black blazer paired with black dress pants that hug his muscular thighs. a white collar underneath with the grey little waistcoat and a maroon tie. to top it all off, his hair is up, he even remembered to let out a strand dangle, his shaved side burns being revealed.

jungkook is tugging his lip ring with his teeth as he nervously eyes you crawl off the bed with your mouth slightly open. he’s never really been into cosplaying, not sure if he could pull it off like the people he’s seen on social media, but he wants to pull it off in front of you.

“do i look silly?” his hands are tugging at the ends of his blazer, your eyes following it as you gasp with a hand over your mouth.

he even has gloves on.

jungkook’s eyes widen, “what? i look bad? do i look–“

you shake your head, quickly cutting him off as you admire the man in front of you right now.

“no, no, god no, kook. you look fucking hot.” making sure to emphasize the last word. you extend your arm to hold onto the fabric of his clothes, all of a sudden your legs feel like jelly.

he’s quick to hold onto you, tugging you against his front. “careful baby, this suit is designer.” he tells you, smirking. oh, now he’s confident.

“ugh, fuck you. god why are you so hot!” you push yourself away from his hold, voluntarily face planting onto your bed as you kick your feet in frustration.

you hear jungkook chuckling behind you as he slides his hands into the pockets of his pants. “don’t you want to take pictures? this won’t happen again…” jungkook sings out. he’s highly amused on how him dressed up as your favorite character has you acting all frustrated. perhaps, sexually frustrated??

immediately your heard perks up as you frantically search for your phone.

“can we have sex when you’re done playing photographer?” he asks during mid-shoot, continuously posing for you, even trying to mimic rei’s hard glare he has all the time.

WL TIPS 🎀 (I’ve lost 13kg so far by doing this)

Calorie Deficit:

Burn more calories than you eat for example, i walk a lot and on my fitness app i have a target of burning 500 calories a day.

So on the days that i burn that amount i’ll eat around 300-350cals.

Low calorie, high volume food

Obviously only eating 200-400cals a day isn’t good but it works, so to make sure that you feel full even though you’re not consuming a lot of calories, you have to eat foods that are filling but low calorie. E.g fruits, yogurt, rice etc.

Half a watermelon is 150cals but so is a chocolate bar…. which one will fill you up more? WATERMELON because of the amount.

Liquid Fasts

Liquid fasting is hard at first but the more you do it the easier it gets. Personally i can’t fast without being able to have drinks because firstly i just really don’t like water and drinking too much of it makes me feel sick, it also doesn’t fill me up which is the whole point of fasting, when u feel hungry u chug water to fill u up, but that doesn’t work on me so instead of water fasting i replace water with monster. If you’re gonna do this only drink zero sugar monsters they are only 11-15cals a can, where as normal monsters are 200-300cals a can. Another alternative is diet coke it has 0 cals a can. Also aim to liquid fast once or twice a week maximum but no more than that or else it could trigger a binge.

How to prevent binging

I’m ngl when you start restricting your food intake in these ways you will binge along the way because it takes time for your stomach to get used to not eating as much. The ways that i prevent binging is to distract myself i’ll do things like go on a walk, watch a long film, look at thinspo, scroll on ed tumblr etc. but that won’t always work. If i’ve binged the first thing i do is go on a walk to try and burn as many calories as i can. If you have binged the night before don’t starve yourself the next day because you will most likely binge again, instead eat small portions of food and go on a walk and drink alot of water so you feel full and so that your stomach resets back to only needing small amounts of food to be full. Another thing to not do after a binge is weigh yourself because it will honestly make you feel like shit and it could make you give up or starve yourself and remember if u starve after a binge you’re very likely to binge again. So after a day or two after your binge do a liquid fast and weigh yourself in the morning.

How to accurately weigh yourself

If you want to weigh yourself the best time to do it is in the morning right after waking up but remember to pee first. Weigh yourself naked bcs clothes add weight.

Hair also adds weight so just tie it up with a thin hair band. Take off any bracelets, necklaces or rings you have on. Also make sure the scale is on a flat hard surface for best accuracy (don’t put it on carpets or rugs).

I’m in Chicago and hanging out with friends but also, I’m awake while the others are sleeping/busy. So maybe I’ll start watching this hmmm. Ideally I’d binge/watch each episode in one go, then go through archives and posts for that episode, then move on to next episode but the rest of the week once I get home is also going to be chaotic, so I don’t think I can watch the episodes with my full attention then either. I wanna be caught up for Friday’s episode, so here we go on my ipad. I wonder why Great had seen the 4 minutes future this episode? Usually it's a significant event, especially ones where he made a cowardly choice, but that time, his heart started hurting and he dropped his drink?

Some progress on the TymeGreat front but it feels a bit strange how shallow? it seems because they've hardly spent time with each other and know nearly nothing about each other but Great is betraying his brother for Tyme and risking his life etc. Maybe because he has the visions of the two of them together and so is trying to speed up the romance? it just feels like their relationship is unearned/lacking which is a stark contrast to how in-depth and complex they're getting with Tonkla's relationships. So is the TymeGreat thing on purpose?

I'm curious how they'll deal with the 2 timelines stuff because the butterfly effect is kind of happening but not really???? The merging of two timelines where Tonkla is in the original one and Great is in the redo one but they bleed into each other (or rather maybe the redo is bleeding into the original one?)

Also I was wondering if the cold opens are from the future but it seems not, right? So does Win know right know that Tonkla is a murder suspect as he sleeps with him after finding out he already has someone and Tonkla's cheating with him? Win grow a backbone and stand for something. hi cas! Swiftie anon btw. Sorry I haven’t messaged in a while, I got grounded for waking up too late for like a week, and I’ve been having standardized testing so I wanted to sleep a little earlier the past few nights, so I’ve been binging your posts. anyway, I’ve been feeling better recently, the day I got grounded was really, really bad for me, and I couldn’t text the hotline, so…yeah. My brother helped a lot, calming me down, but I started hyperventilating again, and started digging my nails into my skin again. The first few days of being grounded were rough, and I really just wanted everything to end. I couldn’t come up with anything to do bc I was basically cut off from the world, I couldn’t listen to music, or watch anything to comfort me.

I think not having as many things to distract me also makes me feel a lot worse and, you know, my parents calling me stupid and saying I’ll end up alone doesn’t help either.

I did end up reading 20-ish books last week, which is insane bc that’s like 3 books a day. I’ve been doing better bc escapism and I’ve actually been working on some wips which I haven’t done in months.

I’ve been texting the hotline whenever I feel too down, but there’s going to be a new Taylor album in a few days, and I’m already feeling the dopamine hit. overall, I’m doing better, I’ve been having problems with my (self-diagnosed) anxiety, and I’ve started hyperventilating a lot more, but that might be my asthma and allergies acting up.

I’ll try to message more often, bc I kinda need this, and hearing from you is nice, you can tell me if it annoys you.

I want to say first that, as a person who studies psychology, I don’t believe in “wannarexia.” Though, I understand the feeling of not feeling valid in our disorder. (Fun fact— most of us that study psychology are ill ourselves)

For me today I feel “wannarexic.” I ate around 1500 calories with the net being around 1,000. Today I opened up to my mom about some things related to other mental health problems I have, I do a lot of compulsions that don’t really bother me but worry her. I agree it can be exhausting sometimes, but mostly when the compulsions bother me it’s because I am overwhelmed with wanting to do what I’m used to but being pressed on time or having too much going around me. Today I told her about how my dad has been acting about his weight loss and how I feel like he was rubbing it in and I said I want to be skinny fast. My mom was worried that I am falling into anorexia again (news flash— I am lol) and she wants to do everything she can. I feel bad that she is worried so I’ll try to up my intake a bit around 1500 but try to keep the net around 1000, on the weekends I’m mostly with my dad so then I can restrict to 800-900. I’m high restricting so I don’t binge bc I’m just starting again in the relapse.

Today I feel “wannarexic” for telling my mom. I know that it was partly a cry for help because my mental health is declining, but at the same time idk if I ~want~ to continue being in recovery. I don’t think I’m ready to stop the relapse.

Anyways sorry for the rant ig.

Okay first I can’t believe you did a full re-read 😭 That’s so sweet omg but also I’m tempted to, reposting everything made me want to read it. As for all the events you mentioned, I feel like when it comes to the season, I want to finish all the main series that would cover that time period before tackling events that happen during that time, if that makes any sense?

For now I’m planning False Confidence to run January-April-ish and then of course playoffs are May-June so I’m not sure whether that’ll be where Mickey’s fic starts up or if I’m going to save that for either the off season or the start of next season? The Long Game takes place at the same time as SGS and YCMBWH and Don’t Wake the Dragon starts between SGS and YCMBWH and runs through at least YCMBWH if not part of False Confidence as well.

So as of right now there’s not a specific fic set to cover the playoffs? Maybe I’ll do individual oneshots so we see each couple during that period or a mini series that covers playoffs specifically?

I’m DEFINITELY writing a oneshot for Zam and Bradley going back to Virginia Beach during the summer but that’s probably also going to come after I finish at least False Confidence.

im reading through the manga for kuroko’s basketball for the first time and AAAHH if you knew the plot i would have mentioned something to you but since you don’t i won’t spoil it !!! (this was the reasoning of my ask hehe)

but as for recs hmmmm i watch a lot of different genres ngl 😭 so i’ll just spit some out

romance - i really really love fruits basket!! i will say its a bit controversial because of the relationships between some of the characters with mc but honestly its just people looking too far away from the premise of the zodiac story. i also really enjoyed my happy marriage again a lil bit weird on the relationship but this time because of the age gap. theyre both adults no worries (bc i know some animes would not respect ages) and its really really beautiful the art style. the story is great too and very interesting, kind of sad but it makes you root for mc even more.

sports - YURI ON ICE. watch it. neooowwwww. art style is BEAUTIFUL and its BL which is not very common!!!!!! i loved it so so much the story was compelling and i binge watched it so hard T^T i also recommend kuroko’s basketball naturally hehe !! it was one of the first series i ever finished. the characters are to DIE for. like you think haikyuu has a great diverse group of characters??? SO DOES KUROKOS BBALL it focuses more on a set of characters within different teams like haikyuu so you still get that one-on-one feel between mc team and the opposing team while getting the opposing team dynamic feel as well!! i would say main duo kagami + kuroko are way different than haikyuu’s kageyama + hinata. all four are really motivated and have their own weaknesses and strengths as players but the dyanmic in the duos are so so different!!! kageyama + hinata are like sunshine and grumpy while kagami + kuroko are like quiet + loud AAAHHH i can go on and on about both of these animes and how similar yet different they are >< but moving on~~

science fiction - the promised neverland i have not watched after s1 mainly because s2 is behind a paywall (for me) BUT it is so so good and so tragic and sad and ughhh i could eat up so many of these dystopian films and shows !! its my fave genre in film overall!! but this show had me BAWLING. i kid you not i swear i probably cried almost every episode toward the end of s1 because its such a good but devastating plot. darwin’s game if you can get behind some fan service and only having one season out… i really recommend this anime! its very similar to alice in borderland (which i also recommend it’s a japanese show adapted from a manga) in which mc gets trapped in a survival game and he does his best to defeat whoever made said game. its really good and some of the characterization is great too !

currently watching - jujutsu kaisen OFC I LOVE MY HUSBAND NANAMI LMAO kidding (not) but um this anime is really really good. heavy on the action and plot and really great animations. however. i will say that if you get attached to characters really easily do not watch this anime 😭 gege (author) is a hater of all his likeable characters /srs im also watching sk8 the infinity which is a sports anime revolving around street skateboarding! i havent watched much maybe a couple of episodes but its really good so far! very intruiging and definitely might interest you since you enjoy haikyuu

I also enjoyed Kakegurui although it’s a bit… darker? and a bit more idk sensual/sexual? compared to other series i’ve dabbled in haha. The premise is elite high schoolers are all into gambling and the stakes are all really high bc they get a thrill out of it haha. I thought it was pretty fascinating how they worked around the different bets they’d make. Deals with some bullying though so just putting that as a cw!!

The Kyoto Arc Analysis Post (Part 1)

In other words, “OP has been consumed by wikipedia rabbit holes for the past 3 months”

Starting writing this in September, now it's November. Also this thing is nearly 7000 words.

TLDR: This is basically a crash course on ancient Kyoto, the mythology then, and stuff that details in this arc points to. Chinese philosophies and mythology are mentioned too, when relevant.

Spoilers for chapters 82 to 94.

Warning: I’m not a historian, just some rando on tumblr, I’ll probably get some details wrong. If you have anything to add or anything to correct, please do, also don’t get too mad at me.

I’m bound to leave out stuff bc not everything is relevant (and there’s already plenty of irrelevant stuff in here sobs), people write whole books about this stuff, I’ll be here for 1000 years if I were to bring up all of it.

I Don’t Know How To Start This

I guess I’ll recommend some other manga that have to do with gods, Shinto, that stuff.

Well. Everyone knows what Noragami is. If you don’t, go read/watch it. If you do, go read/watch it again. It’s probably better than you remember it being. That’s the curse of monthly manga, it feels like there’s pacing problems when you read it once a month, but usually when you binge it you find it’s structured pretty well. Strangely I don’t find this with youkaigakkou, but maybe because I think about it 24/7.

Touge Oni, or “Primal Gods in Ancient Times”. This manga leans heavily into ancient Japan, Shinto creation myths, stuff like that. Tonally it’s kind of like Mushishi, in the way that powers beyond human comprehension just do crazy shit. Anyway, great manga, highly recommend.

Wow, The Actual Manga, Right

Just some trivia to start with. This is going to wander quite a bit, because there’s a lot about history and mythology, which means everything is connected to everything else. You know how it is.

Shinto shrines are called shrines, 神社 -jinja, meaning “place of the god(s)”

Buddhist temples are called temples, 寺 -dera or -ji.

The temple they’re staying at is called “Bonnou-ji”, or "worldly desires temple". As far as I can tell, this isn’t a real place, nor could I figure out what temple it’s based on just from the scenery we get to see. (We don’t even get a general location of what part of Kyoto it’s in.)

Heian-Kyo

You may have noticed South is oriented at the top on this page.

I have a guess, but I can’t be sure it’s right.

Why does it matter? First of all, we have to talk about the other thing Seimei mentions about Kyoto: It’s built in a grid.

(By the way, this is an insane thing to say. What does he mean?? Does he mean “ah yes city was built like this over 100 years ago so one day someone could use this specific spell involving a grid to subdue a giant booba monster”?)

Also, the word he uses for “grid” here is “碁盤目 (gobanme)”, which in the literal sense means “shaped like a Go board”, which is cute. I want to see them play Go.

Heian-kyo (the name for Kyoto back then), like Japan’s previous capital of Heijo-kyo (now Nara), was modelled after the Chinese capital of Chang’an (now Xi’an).

For the record, they probably didn’t call themselves “Heian-kyo” back in those times, and started calling themselves Kyoto around the 11th century. It’s kinda like how we call it “ancient Japan” but they didn’t call themselves that. To them it was just “now” and “the capital”. Why make a name for “the capital” when there’s just one capital that will be capital forever? Makes sense.

(Just for reference, the layout of the streets and where Heian-kyo would be compared to modern Kyoto.)

The emperor’s palace is in the northernmost part of the rectangular city, with the main street Suzaku-oji going down the center of the city to the southern gate.

The reason behind that is the idea that left (east) is more important than right (west), and that the emperor should sit with his back facing the north star (Polaris), so that the sun rises from the left (east) and sets on the right (west).

What Heian-kyo and Chang’an are both based off is the urban planning fengshui idea of “shijin-so-o”, which translates to “four gods topography”, which is the very same four gods we’re talking about this arc.

There are two very similar versions of this philosophy, the original one and the one derived from that.

The original version is based off the idea of “zofu-jusui” meaning storing wind and water. There is to be mountains in the North, hills in the East and West, and a body of water in the South, creating a sort of jug.

The expanded version is:

Seiryuu to the left, flowing water in the East Byakko to the right, thoroughfare in the West Suzaku to the front, lake in the South Genbu to the back, mountains in the North

Basically, a city is to be bounded by mountains in the North, a river in the East, a road in the West, a lake to the South. Also, again, left and right in this definition is based off the emperor’s perspective, which could explain the direction labelling on that page.

In any case, both of these definitions apply to Kyoto.

Also, Chinese maps traditionally were oriented with south at the top, I can't say for certain if Japanese maps did too, but it's likely!

However, if you look at maps today, you may find that there’s no major body of water south of Kyoto.

In the past, there used to be the Ogura-ike pond south of Kyoto, which symbolised Suzaku. (Despite being called a “pond”, it was more the size of a lake, 4km by 3km). In the 1930s, it was filled in because of land reclamation, to create more farmland.

In a sense, Kyoto had “lost Suzaku”.

Intermission

It’s also BECAUSE of this very philosophy that Kyoto nowadays gets abnormally hot in summer (above 35 degrees celsius for 15 days a year on average, compared to 5 days everywhere else).

Because it’s inland and blocked by mountains on all sides, on hot days, cool air can’t flow in from elsewhere so it just keeps getting hotter. Sounds like a stupid trade-off for stupid philosophy, but the practical reason behind the philosophy was probably that surrounded by mountains, Kyoto would be harder to invade.

Suzaku-oji

The main street, Suzaku-oji, also gets its name from the four gods. The main entrance to the palace, connected to Suzaku-oji is also called Suzakumon, or Suzaku Gate.

Speaking of Suzakumon, it shows up in the manga!

It’s where Byakko brings the gang when they go to the Seimei shrine. (Albeit a surreal version) The text on the plaque over the door is hard to read on this manga page, but it’s clear in this chapter promo art.

I believe it’s also where Shutendouji appears in ch 89. The text over the door is even harder to make out, but the building itself looks just like in that promo art.

Back to Suzaku-oji. Looking at modern Kyoto, you may notice that there's no major road down the center, instead there’s that major road to the right (in yellow). Zoom in! Enhance! What’s that road called!

Karasuma-dori street. Corresponding to Karasuma-koji of Heian-kyo, and has replaced Suzaku-oji in modern times as a main street of Kyoto. You know, like Karasuma Ranmaru. (launches myself out the nearest window)

So anyway, what gets me hung up about why south is at the top in that page, is that it just does not correspond to the map under it.

Left side is a miniature model of Heian-kyo, it’s basically a perfect match. And you can see Suzaku-oji right there on the miniature model, that big wide road, stretching from the palace gate towards the south, which would mean that south should be at the bottom of the page instead of north.

So why is it like that? idk

ALSO, IF YOU LOOK AT THIS PANEL FROM CH88, WHERE IS THE MAIN STREET???? This panel drives me insane. YOU KNOW WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE? If you took that top half, the palace, and just pasted it at the bottom. And also the sides. DID THEY THINK NOBODY WOULD NOTICE? You know what they had a point. Canada “most sane yohaji enjoyer”, OP of this blog, who spent 2 months looking for sources on ancient Japanese and Chinese urban planning in 3 different languages, is an outlier and should not be counted.

What does this have to do with Kuji-kiri?

Honestly? I don’t know! There’s not a super obvious connection.

Kuji-kiri is the grid thing Douman does, “kuji” means nine words, “kiri” means cut. It’s a version of the kuji-in (nine hand seals), where the kuji-in is nine hand signs paired with nine words or phrases, the kuji-kiri is 5 horizontal and 4 vertical lines, drawn alternating, starting with a horizontal line.

It’s said to be derived from the principle of yin-yang in Taoism, which Onmyoudou as a whole comes from. (Onmyou and yin-yang use the same kanji)

Specifically, the 5 horizontal slashes are yang and offensive, the 4 vertical slashes are yin and defensive.

Worth mentioning, Onmyoudou also incorporates the philosophy of gogyo (five elements). Will elaborate on that later.

9 is a symbolic number in Taoism, said to be the perfect number in divination for yang, or the nine planets, or the seven stars of the big dipper plus two guardian stars, believed to be the gateway to heaven. There is the most tenuous of connections here, in that 9 was an important number in Chinese philosophy, where an ancient Chinese urban planning guide states “9 li x 9 li squares” (“li” is a unit of measurement) and “9 vertical and 9 horizontal streets in the city”

To that end, I assume the connection is simply that Kyoto is grid = Kuji-kiri is grid.

Four Gods

Four gods, auspicious beasts, symbols, guardians, whatever. The idea originated from China, and didn’t change all that much when they got to Japan. They don’t have this many names in Chinese, it’s just called “si xiang”. “Si” means four. “Xiang” doesn't have a great exact translation.

Not to be confused with any other mythical figures that come in fours that China/Buddhism/whatever seem to love so much, for all that “four” is an unlucky number.

Like a lot of other Chinese mythical things, while associated with Taoism, the four gods didn’t really originate from any religion. In that sense, I think they occupy the same cultural space as Japanese youkai, in that while sorta connected to religion, they’re not the focus.

They’re not gods of any religion, so what are they?

They’re constellations.

In Chinese astronomy, much like the western zodiac, the night sky is split into parts corresponding with the Earth’s position throughout the year. (Albeit, based off the moon rather than the sun.)

The night sky is split into 4 quadrants and 1 middle section, the middle around polaris symbolizing the emperor, and each quadrant is one of the four gods.

As said before, this is relevant because it’s part of the fengshui stuff behind the layout of Chang’an, which was inherited into the layout of Heian-kyo.

What does this have to do with Abe no Seimei?

Well. Onmyoudou is just divination, which is just astrology.

The four gods are very much tied to the Gogyo (five elements), which is half of the basis of Onmyoudou (the other half is yin-yang).

We know it's specifically the Taoist Gogyo and not the Buddhist Godai (another thing with 5 elements), because Seiryuu specifically says his domain is “wood” and “wood” is not present in the Godai.

If you’ve seen other media with Abe no Seimei, you may have heard of the 12 divine guardians (or divine whatevers, you get the idea). They’re shikigami employed by him, four of which are these four gods. I’m not entirely sure if it’s these four gods themselves, or if they just share namesakes.

(Also not to be confused with whatever other figures in Buddhism/whatever that come in twelves)

These 12 divine guardians also each correspond to a direction and the Chinese year zodiac.

The idea of the four gods is oddly extremely tied to Abe no Seimei, I assume because of the astronomy and astrology connection, so much that the gate to the Seimei shrine is the “shijinmon” or “four gods gate”, and also the pillars with the four gods carvings that show up in the manga as well.

Abe no Seimei tangent! According to legends, Abe no Seimei's mom was a white fox, Kuzunoha, often considered a youkai, but also sometimes said to be the envoy of a god or is a god herself.

In other words. What I’m trying to say is. I want to see fox Haruaki. (OP's worldly desires)

Tbh, I don’t know how much of this is common knowledge. I’ve seen a pretty big variety of people reading youkaigakkou, from people who are hearing about youkai for the first time to people who know absolutely everything about onmyoudou and onmyouji. I guess in this essay so far, the Abe no Seimei stuff is more towards the “everyone knows this” end of the spectrum and the Heian era urban planning is “who the fuck knows this”.

Youkaigakkou Geoguessr

That was a lot, so here’s me messing around on google maps for a little bit.

This panel was changed slightly in the volume release, but these are the Toji pagoda, the Fushimi Inari Shrine torii gates, and Kyoto Tower.

At the start of ch83, they’re at Nijo Castle.

The parking sign, tree, and road sign line up almost exactly, and the building looks roughly right. (Seimei shrine also marked on the map for reference)

Seimei shrine is pretty cool. Sensei got to go there for photo references. It never really occurred to me how weird featuring real places in a manga would be, as cool as it always is, all the paperwork you probably have to do. (They have a link to apply for that on the website) They have a wall with Ema (wooden plaques) written by actors, authors, filmmakers and mangaka that feature the shrine in their works. I wonder if Tanamai sensei got to write one.

This page was also changed in a pretty big way in the volume release.

I mentioned this in my TL note, but this is referencing the reports of taxi drivers ferrying ghosts, especially after major natural disasters.

Yasaka shrine, roughly 3km straight line distance from Seimei shrine, 5km on the road. I’ll take the manga at its word as the closest Ebisu shrine lol. That panel in the manga specifically would be the west gate, which lines up with the road they probably took (straight south and then east).

The main deity enshrined there is Susanoo-no-Mikoto, but there’s a bunch of shrines on the grounds dedicated to different gods, one of which is to Ebisu.

Specifically, it’s the “kitamuki-ebisu-sha”, or “north facing Ebisu shrine”. Because it… uh… (checks compass) faces north… I guess…? The interesting trivia about this is that Ebisu is written like “蛭子” instead of “恵比寿” (though it’s read as “ebisu” all the same)

蛭子 is more commonly read as “Hiruko”. (Anybody watch Summer Time Rendering here?)

Ebisu is thought to originate from the first child of Shinto creation myth big names Izanagi and Izanami, Hiruko, meaning “leech child” because he was born without bones, and was cast into the sea and floated ashore somewhere. In a popular version of the story, he washed ashore in Hokkaido, to be raised by an Ainu guy called Ebisu Saburou. (Or sometimes this guy is an Ainu deity? I cannot find a reliable primary source for this. This name comes up fairly frequently but I can’t pin it down.) I’ve also seen claims that “Saburou” is a generic name meaning “third child”, and since he is definitely the first child, that the “first two” are Izanagi and Izanami.

In any case, this would make him the older brother of Susanoo-no-Mikoto, who I’m not saying has any connection to any Mii-kuns we know of, but you know.

currently watching: I guess I’m watching Ted Lasso but I haven’t watched the past 2 episodes because the start of the season was so massively bad I’m just gonna wait till it ends and binge the rest. I’m watching Doctor Cha bc one thing about me is I’ll be watching korean dramas with plucky females leads. Will watch Bo Ra! Deborah eventually too. I need to watch the last episode of Abbott Elementary as well but I’ve been watching that pretty consistently! Also I watched about 7 episodes of Law & Order yesterday bc I was so stressed. 

currently reading: uhm awks i have not picked up a new book in months... I’ve re-read a bunch of stuff this year just like. comfort reads. But nothing new! I need to uh. clear my library fines so I can go and browse again. Honestly I haven’t even read new fic in ages. I have nothing to offer you! 

current obsession: I’m really obsessed with finding all the clips of Lando dancing or performing or singing in some ways so if you have any pop them over to me. Obsessed with whatever Lewis and Miles have going on. VERY obsessed with my girlfriend she’s so cute. Sorry! Good news; I finally finished the fucking candy bars in my house and won’t be buying any more so they won’t be around for me to eat bc istg they’ve been making up 1/3 of my intake lately. Honestly though just proud of myself for not binging the whole bag in one sitting.

Neutral news; I weighed in at 169.0 AGAIN today. Kinda disappointing but I know weight loss isn’t linear and I figured after the first 10 pounds or so it would start moving a lot slower. Just hoping to hit 160.0 by the end of November.

Bad news; my partner and I have dinner planned tonight, as in a three course meal at a fancy restaurant. We’ve had these reservations for over a year and I’d be an asshole to weasel my way out because I know it’s something she’s been looking forward to. I’m going to try my best to purge it but with how long it’ll be between each course and how much food it’ll be, I doubt I’ll be able to get it all up without going to the bathroom so frequently that it’ll make her suspicious. Gonna follow the meal/purges with a couple laxatives and hope that balances it out but I’m fully anticipating some weight gain ):

Thankfully today at work should be super active given that it’s Halloween, so I’ll burn some extra cals. Will try to eat light this morning too and then not eat in the afternoon in anticipation for tonight’s dinner. Wish me luck (,:

so one day i’ve posted a random thing and then i went to look at one of the tags i added for some reason and i saw one of your posts in that tag section(?). i don’t really remember what it was but i remember you were just talking abt something. then i saw scara on your pfp and something on my mind just told me to click and check your account. and i did (one of the best decisions i’ve made) AND SURPRISE SURPRISE you’re a fanfic writer and you write for my fav fandoms. then i read ‘blue in the light’ and you were recommending ‘plane crash blues (i can’t play the piano)’ at the start and i was like “y’know what yeah sure i’ll listen to it too why not” (again, one of the best decisions i’ve made) then after reading the fic i got obsessed with your writing and like i’ve binge read most of them if not all AND i also got obsessed with the song and like at that point i was only listening to that.

so i was like “y’know what i need more songs like that.” so i listened the radio spotify made for the song and i liked it so much i made it into an actual playlist and over the time i edited and made the pl bigger (and it’s still growing) and now CSH is one of my fav bands. and i followed you and after a while i joined the discord server and like you probably know the rest

1. let’s get yellowjackets out of the way first bc y’all already know it is the most tv show of all, is altering my brain chemistry in indescribable ways, and just generally the only thing i care about rn

2. buzzfeed unsolved: i don’t know or care if i should be counting youtube series but yeah this show (and anything ryan and shane make) is hilarious and makes me happy. i binged in during april 2020 so it was a huge source of joy during that time

3. next up is what we do in the shadows bc it is just a great time and i really enjoy mockumentary style stuff

4. feel like i should mention stranger things bc i’ve had a stranger things era before on this blog and it’ll probably happen again. season 4 just really got to me, probably a lot of it was robin and knowing i had her to look forward to and then jumping on ronance

5. the xfiles! i still haven’t watched every season (i get bored when it’s not the classic scully and mulder monster of the week style) but i really like it. some good old fashioned spooky shit and one of the few m/f ships i support.

6. i’m really enjoying abbott elementary at the moment. just another great mockumentary style sitcom and i’m really excited to see where the story goes

7. some more gillian anderson with sex education. really fun vibes and soundtrack that tackles serious topics while being so funny. i do think it might start getting bad if they keep going but alas

8. haunting of bly manor, a show that never fails to make me cry. dani and jamie’s relationship is just so beautiful and i love the ghost story is a love story idea
