Casual reminder that the following things are considered traumatic to small children
- neglect (physical and/or emotional)
- living in an emotionally unstable environment (for example, having parents that fight often)
- any kind of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse (not just from parents)
- consistent bullying
- etc
Remember that what is traumatic to a child is not the same as what is traumatic to you now. So think again before saying your trauma ‘isn’t bad enough’

You know what the worst part of having a dissociative disorder is, for me personally?
The emotional amnesia.
Your entire life feels like something that you watched on TV, rather than something that you actually lived through.
You know that some of the most horrific things imaginable have happened to you, and you feel nothing about it. Sure, the memories disgust you on principle, but you don’t feel anything.
It makes you question if anything that you remember is real. If that actually happened, shouldn’t it feel significant? Shouldn’t you be sad, angry, hurt, something?
And to top it all off, nobody understands. Not even yourself.

"I'm okay with you having DID, I just don't want to talk to or meet any of your alters."
I'm an alter too, you know. Every single time you've interacted with me, I'm an alter. Even before you knew I had DID, even before I knew I had DID, we've been speaking to each other as various different alters. To ask to only interface with one singular version of me because you find the other versions of me uncomfortable to be around is hurtful.
We have little to no control over who's fronting at any particular time. We switch a lot, that's the nature of my system. Even we don't know who's fronting all the time, not least because we're discovering new parts still all these years later.
And, ultimately, they're all me. If you've only met one version of me and like that one version of me, do you truly like me? If you've only ever gotten to know me in that particular mode, how well do you actually know me? How can you say you love me when there's all these other me's that you cast aside and ignore?
You can't say you're okay with my DID but then ask to never get to know my alters. Because, ultimately, that means you never get to know me. And that means you're not okay with my DID- or with me.

DID but not as in presence of "evil murderer alter", DID as in buying two drinks instead of one because someone came to front after seeing a blue raspberry slushie and DEMANDED to have it, but the alter who walked all the way to the gas station refused to leave without getting what they wanted to get initially.

Shout out to all the kids who always picked shape-shifting as their hypothetical power growing up and assumed it was for gender affirmation but now realize it was also a plurality thing.

Hey, it’s not your fault. You were just a kid. You may still BE a kid. But I know a few things for certain:
You didn’t ask to be born into this world.
You didn’t ask to be treated the way that you were treated—whether it was by bullies, parents, or other family members.
You didn’t ask to “be a burden” to your caregivers, you deserved that space to be loved and safe
You didn’t ask for your consent to be broken.
You didn’t ask for the shame and guilt someone put you through.
You aren’t bad for something happening to you. You aren’t your trauma.
I’m sorry if you were ever made to feel that way, and I know that may never mean much coming from a stranger, but I know it’s something I wish I heard more.

A system is a collection of alters. Alters are chronically dissociated self states, with different neurological pathways that often are accompanied by a varying degree of amnesia. Dissociation is caused by stress/trauma. Alters are a byproduct of dissociating from trauma. You can’t dissociate from trauma you do not have. You cannot dissociate without trauma. You cannot have alters without trauma. You cannot have a system without alters.
You cannot be a system without trauma.
Do you have to know about the trauma ? No. Does it have to be a certain type of trauma ? No. Does it need to be a certain severity ? No. It just needs to have occurred during critical developmental period of the brain. Before the ego states have stitched together, it must be chronic, and beyond the child’s stress threshold, otherwise it will not disrupt the developmental growth. This is different for everyone. The reason trauma cannot be listed as a diagnostic criteria, is because there is no “xyz trauma that causes dissociative disorders”. It’s completely unique to each person suffering from the disorder. And in often cases, the person suffering from the disorder isn’t aware of their trauma. That’s the point of the disorder. This does not mean you don’t need trauma to suffer from a dissociative disorder. Systems are byproducts of dissociative disorders, you cannot be a byproduct of a disorder you do not have.
Endos are not systems. What do I mean by this? I mean that, by definition, that term is not suited for them, and is not meant to describe them. Just like kinning doesn’t mean you’re a system, just like roleplaying doesn’t mean you’re a system, just like religious practises such as tulpamancy isn’t a system. You are perfectly free to do whatever you please, truly. But do not compare it to being a system. You do not share our experiences. You are a different community entirely, and that’s ok.
But please, for the love of god, stop invading our community, and stop spreading misinformation about an already stigmatised and misunderstood disorder.
I understand if you didn’t know better. But please, educate yourself, and stop spreading this misinformation. Being a system isn’t an identity. It’s not a label. And please, stop comparing it to being queer. This is a mental illness. Being queer is not a mental illness.

can we shed some light on the amnesia in DID that literally doesn't matter? the amnesia that isn't about anything important or anything it's just really fucking annoying to forget! examples:
"oh that reminds me of my favorite movie! ...which now, i conveniently cannot remember the name to"
[introducing yourself to someone] "oh shit what are my hobbies? what do i like to do?? fuck i can't remember!!"
"oh my god im literally obsessed with this thing!! its always on my mind... AND I HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA WHAT IT'S CALLED RN!!!!"
like it's the type of amnesia that doesn't necessarily negatively impact every daily life but you know it's really fucking bothersome to not be able to remember! i literally forgot that i liked movies, or the fact that i liked movies so much i went to film school I FORGOT I WENT TO FILM SCHOOL???

guys this might be a dumb and obvious question but like…do some of your alters/parts want to be perceived as separate people and some of them really don’t…? like some of them don’t even want names or pronouns and others like to be completely individual and separate.
on sysblr the normalization of alters being separate people is everywhere but i never see people talk about some of their alters not wanting to be separate from the body. idk if any of that makes sense

something i wanna clear up in the sys community
some of the people on this site need to realize that not all alters/parts/headmates in a system split only due to trauma. "traumaendo" isnt a thing.
we have a collection of splits that arent due to trauma. usually these splits are from general stress, anxiety, etc. there are even times where we arent going through a noticeably stressful event, but we split a new headmate because our identity issues are constantly affecting us even when we arent going through anything traumatic or stressful.
even though we have headmates that split from things other than trauma, we are still a traumagenic system because the system itself formed from trauma. one alters reason for splitting does not (and will never) change that. while an alter can split from things outside of trauma, systems can only exist because of trauma. there is a fine line between the two.

I have a hot take and opinion. I find it so strange when other systems say they support all systems (those with DID/OSDD), but the moment they have differences within their system, suddenly some of you become cold.
A common one is how people feel when a person talks about their inner world as a real place. Why does that bother you so much? I’m genuinely wondering. And don’t hit me with the “it’s weird, it’s not okay, that’s not how systems work” or something else that is absolutely ridiculous. I want to know a full-depth answer on why someone with DID or OSDD (a fellow system) talking about their inner headspace causes such distress for you?
In my opinion, who really cares lol? Why are we policing how people interact with their system if they are a legitimate traumagenic system that is not spreading misinformation about systems? It’s like when people say they have a front room, cool! If someone talks about how it’s like an empty void, also cool! A person mapping out their inner world or drawing it? Lovely! But then god forbid someone talks about the inner world like a real place (which usually they know it’s not real as far as IRL goes).
It’s always systems support systems until they’re a little different from you (and no I do NOT include endo’s/nontraumagenic people, they are NOT systems). A professional wouldn’t put down someone for talking about their inner world so why should you?

Someone drowning in 6 feet of water is as equally dead as a person drowning in 20 feet of water.
Please stop comparing trauma and making it a challenge. It’s trauma. Not a competition or medal.
