A couple days later, Lucas stepped out of his cell, ready for rollcall with a more healthy shade to his complexion and a normal temperature. His fever, luckily, had only lasted a day or two and he had somehow managed to get through the dull but relentless routine of prison life. He had no idea how, though, as the days had passed in a thick fog. But now both his sinuses and his head were clear again.

“Feeling better yet, Varga?” Nero asked in passing. He didn’t stop, just kept walking, stepping past Lucas without so much a glance in his direction, showing that ultimately, he really didn’t care.

Still, Lucas answered like the good inmate he was. “Yes, sir,” he said dutifully, even nodding respectfully at Nero’s back, but he couldn’t help a, “No thanks to you.”

The harsh clanks of boots against the metal walkway stopped and the silence echoed within Lucas’ tightening chest. Shit.

Nero turned, slowly. Stopped halfway for dramatic effect, looking Lucas over, probably looking for signs of a fever delirium. Oh, if only. The only thing that might point in that direction was the bead of sweat now forming on his brow. Not enough to excuse the outburst.

Lucas, like all the other inmates, stared straight ahead, following the military stoicism of everyone else. Pretending very hard that Nero wasn’t glaring daggers at him and that while his neighbours kept their face front, he knew their side-eyes were on him and their thoughts were with him. And not in a good way. Out of the corner of his own eyes, he was very sure that he could see Nero’s lips twitch up into the most microscopic smile.

Two hands grabbed him by the lapels of his grey shirt, dragged him from his spot, fully ignoring his shocked protests, and with unnerving ease swung him full force towards the railing along the walkway. Or, more precisely, towards the floor below.

“No, no, wait, wait!”

His back crashed hard against the railing. And Nero gave him that final shove that tipped him over.

The pressure against his back let up, and his brain gave that full body jolt that he was falling.

But gravity didn’t take over.

He opened his eyes and let out a shaky breath of relief.

Nero kept him up, hands still snagged tight in the lapels of his shirt. Surprisingly, the flimsy cotton did hold his weight. And for once, once in his life, he was very thankful that Nero was so ridiculously strong. His legs still dangled over the railing and he hooked his feet behind the bars, just in case Nero did decide to let go of him.

His head tilted back and he looked up towards the floor under him. About fifteen feet down. Would this fall kill him? Crashing against the concrete below him headfirst? The distance looked brain damaging for sure. Skull cracking even.

Nero lightly shook him to get his attention and Lucas made a very unflattering squeaky sound in the back of his throat as he slid down a little further.

“I can only assume your answer means you weren’t fully awake yet...” Nero rumbled, not unsympathetically.

Lucas grabbed onto that ray of mercy like it was a dangling rope above a ravine. “Yes! Sir! I’m awake now! I’m awake!”

He sought out those cold grey eyes looking down on him, pleading without a word to just not drop him and please get him back up. Nero leered back at him, unimpressed, seemingly considering his next action. Then the fists on the lapels tightened.

With a swift movement Nero pulled him back to a vertical position.

Lucas stumbled lightly, glad to feel firm ground under his feet again. But before he could even fully exhale a breath of relief, Nero easily tilted him off balance again. And with another strong shove smashed him back against wall in front of his cell.

The force blew all air from his lungs. His back exploded in pain and the shock blasted through his entire body. His legs gave out. And Nero finally let go of him.

He crumpled to an unflattering heap, a hand to his chest. He couldn’t breathe! Like something had blocked up in that slam. Or his body just forgot how to go through the motion! He bucked his whole body, dryheaving. Wheezed, gasped, but couldn’t draw in any air. Only a sharp pain stabbed through his torso. He slapped a flat hand against his chest, hoping to jumpstart the muscles to breathe again and break the paralysis, thumped a fist against his sternum.

And finally oxygen spilled into his lungs with a heaving, stuttering gasp. He let himself fall back against the wall, desperately sucking in a next few couple of breaths.

Nero loomed over him, not helping the tension alleviate from his chest one bit.

“Get up.”

Not wanting to waste any precious air on empty words, nor wanting to waste precious seconds testing Nero’s patience, Lucas vigorously nodded. He held up a hand and shuffled to a kneeling position to push himself up. With effort. Pain crackled across his back as his spine straightened again and he knew that the lower backpain of dangling over a thin metal rod was going to follow him for the rest of the day.

He unfolded himself, carefully keeping himself steady with his palm against the wall, and pushed himself up. He tried to get his breathing back under control, taking sharp, shallow intakes of breath through his nose, interrupted every now and then by a hitch or grunt of exertion or pain. He bit it away and looked up at Nero.

“Straighten yourself up.” Nero nodded at Lucas' shirt that had come undone. “Before I have to write you up for breaking the dress code as well.”

Write up, beat up… all the same. But Lucas nodded shakily and obediently tucked his shirt back in. He glanced up at Nero for approval and the man simply nodded.

Then he turned. A ripple went through the half circle of the walkway as every inmate snapped to attention and pretended they hadn’t been watching all that, and Nero resumed the headcount like nothing had happened.

I get using no specific iteration of the TMNT in a crossover and just making yet another new version. After all, the franchise has had many, many different versions at this point, so it's easy to accept that this is simply one more to add to the pile.

But Naruto has... one. Just the one. So when all of a sudden characters are written/shown to have expertise that they shouldn't have at the age they're being depicted, it just ends up feeling weird.

I get that fitting things into the Naruto timeline can be a chore. Do it too early, and Sakura is kinda useless. Do it too late, and Sasuke's off murdering people. And if you try to set it after the series, the power levels are seriously gonna be out of whack.

But breaking the only canon that has ever existed for these characters makes them feel like... not the same characters. I might be the only one who cares about this, but it really took me out of the story, to the point where I couldn't help but focus on it. I don't want to be distracted from page one of a silly ninja crossover comic.
