A tired yawn left your mouth as Ethan and you walked up the steps to his and your shared apartment.
“We are nearly there, just hold on,” Ethan spoke in a tired voice.
He wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling you closer to him, as the both of you ascended the stairs.
Finally getting to the apartment.
You let out another yawn as then fished out the keys. Grabbing them and putting them into the door. He turned the keys. Hearing a click. He pulled the key out of the door. Grabbing the doorknob. He twisted it open, unwrapping his arm from around you. You quickly walked inside. Ethan followed behind you. Locking the door behind him.
When he turned around he saw you standing there looking at the living room. Mainly at the couch, where your son was wide awake watching TV. His sister Emily was fast asleep next to him.
“Hey my sweet boy, you are still awake,” You spoke. Walking over to the five-year-old.
“Mommy,” He exclaimed. Jumping off the couch and rushing over to his mom. You kneeled, opening your arms.
He quickly crashed into you. hugging you tightly. Head buried into your chest. You wrapped your arms around him. closing your eyes. Ethan stared at his son and you in awe.
“I couldn’t sleep,” He spoke. Making you smile.
“Oh no, let us help put you to sleep, how about a walk,” You spoke. Shooting Ethan a knowing look. When [son’s name] couldn’t sleep, Ethan and you would take him for a walk.
“Yes please,” He spoke, stumbling over his words. Making you laugh softly.
Ethan walked over to the couch where Emily was sleeping. He took the remote off of her. Turned the TV off, and then put it down on the coffee table. He grabbed a blanket. Unfolding it and placing it on top of her.
When he turned to face [son’s name] and you, he saw that his son was holding your hand. [Son’s name] and you staring at him already, waiting for him.
Ethan walked over to [son’s name] and you. Grabbing a hold of [son’s name] hand.
“Come on little buddy,” Ethan spoke.
All three of you walk to the front door. Ethan unlocked the door. Opening it. The three of you exit. You shut and locked the door behind you.
Ethan, [son’s name], and you walked down the stairs. [Son’s name] babbling to Ethan and you about what he did today, then moved on to what Santa was going to get him for Christmas, as Ethan, [son’s name] and you exited the apartment complex.
[Son’s name] held Ethan’s hand and your hand tighter, as the three of you walked down the street. Passing pedestrian.
In a distance, you could see an ice skating rink. You looked over at Ethan, Ethan cast a glance your way, which made you turn your head in the direction of the ice skating rink, you looked back at Ethan seeing he was looking at the ice skating rink. He then looked back at you, smiling, as he caught on to what you were hinting at.
“Come on little buddy, how about we go to the ice skating rink, and watch the ice skaters skate,” Ethan spoke. Looking down at [son’s name].
“Yes,” [Son’s name] beamed.
Before crossing Ethan, [son’s name] and you looked both ways, then crossed the road,  going over to the ice skating rink.
The three of you going up to the barrier.
Ethan picked up [son’s name], so he could see the skaters skating.
The little boy stared at them in awe. Babbling about how cool they looked. After fifteen minutes his eyes started to flutter closed. He then opened his eyes again. Rubbing his eyes. Ethan let out a gentle chuckle.
“It is okay bud, you can go to sleep, we can go to the ice rink tomorrow. Maybe even get you on the ice,” Ethan spoke in a soothing voice.
[Son’s name] nodded his head, too tired to speak.
He buried his head into the crook of his father's neck. closing his eyes as sleep took over his body.
“Let’s head home,” Ethan spoke, looking over at you. You nodded your head.
Ethan held [son’s name] as the two of you exited, heading back home. A comforting silence settled between the two of you. Putting the code into the door of the apartment complex. You held the door open; Ethan thanked you as he walked in, and you followed behind him, shutting the door.
Ethan ascended the stairs carefully, not wanting to wake [son’s name]. You follow behind him. Once Ethan and you reached the apartment Ethan and you shared, he handed you the keys. You put the keys in the lock. Twisting it, the door unlocked. Your hand grabbed the doorknob and twisted it, opening the door. Walking in first, you opened the door wider, standing to the side.
Ethan walked in, you carefully closed the door, then locked it. All the while Ethan walked to [son’s name] bedroom. You followed after him once you finished locking the door.
Pulling the covers down. Ethan placed [son’s name] down on his bed. You pulled the covers up. Then leaned down, pressing a soft kiss on his forehead.
“Goodnight, my sweet boy,” You softly spoke, then pulled away.
Ethan leaned down to press a soft kiss on [son’s name] forehead. Wishing him a goodnight. He pulled away.
The both of you stared at [son’s name] in awe, before leaving his room. Closing the door slightly.
Ethan and you checked on Emily. Making sure she was comfortable. Fixing the blanket. You put a pillow underneath her head. Once she was taken care of Ethan and you walked to the master bedroom. Going into the ensuite bathroom.
Ethan brushed his teeth, while you brushed your teeth.  Taking turns going to the toilet. While the other one was using the toilet the other one was getting changed.
Ethan and you made your way into the bed. Getting underneath the covers. Snuggling into each other. Your back was pressed into his chest, as he spooned you.
Turning your head to look at him. He pressed a soft kiss against your lips. Pulling away a second later and smiling softly at you. Eyes heavy with sleep.
“Goodnight, baby, I love you,” Ethan spoke.
“Goodnight love, I love you too,” You responded.
Letting out a yawn. You turned your head back. Resting it on the pillow. Eyes fluttering closed, as sleep took over you.
Ethan held you tighter as sleep took over him as well…..

• Pairing: Will Halstead x Female!Reader.
• Requested by @klovesreading: I was wondering if you could do a story where the reader is married to Will but is a detective with Jay and is really close with Jay. But one day a case goes bad and the reader gets shot and almost dies and just a lot of angst but the reader survives in the end!
• Warnings: mention of blood, drugs, gunshots, tiny bit of angst and swearing.
• Word count: 5018.
• A/N: this is my first Will Halstead fic and it’s ugly as fuck, I don’t like one bit how it turned out 😭 you can actually notice I didn’t want to write anything else but I know if I kept going it would’ve ended up being so much longer than this so here is this piece of shit. I hope you’ll like it anyway but please bear with me 😭 comment, like and reblog if you want. I love you all so much ❤️

You, Will and Jay had been good friends for as long as you could remember.
The three of you grew up in the same neighborhood, your families being friends for a very long time. They were like big brothers to you or, at least, only one of them was.
You never managed to hide the crush you had on the redhead since you were a teenager, no one missed this detail – not even Jay who never wasted time teasing you about your crush on his brother – only Will seemed to not to see it.
You spent years of your adolescence and youth pining for him, trying to suppress your feelings knowing he didn't feel the same. You tried to move on, you had some boyfriends but it always ended the same way: you leaving them because you could never completely get Will out of your head. And as time passed you had resigned yourself to it, accepting you’d never be anything other than best friends.
There was a time when the three of you drifted apart, Will had gone to medical school, Jay had joined the army and left to go overseas and you spent a lot of time training to get in the police academy.
But fate really seemed to work in wonderful ways.
You thought you’d never reconnect with the Halstead brothers again but this was proven wrong when one day you met Jay at the police academy. You were a patrol cop with about two years of experience and he had just joined the Chicago PD after returning from his mission overseas.
And just like that you learned that Will had recently returned to Chicago and started working at Med's. It was as if time had never passed for the three of you, returning to having the deep bond that had united you since childhood.
But just as you thought your love for Will had somehow passed, it was enough for you to spend just a day with him to understand those deep feelings had never faded and that Will would forever be in your heart.
As time passed though, Will realized he was starting to look at you differently, continually craving your company. He didn't know when it happened or how it happened but he found himself inexorably losing his mind for you, in a way that shouldn't have happened with his best friend.
So for an amount of time you found yourselves lusting for each other from afar without either of you growing any balls and confessing your feelings.
The turning point came when the morning after spending a night at the bar and drinking too many shots and cocktails, you woke up in Will's bed with only a sheet covering your body. You were both too drunk the night before to remember what had happened but that blurry sexual encounter didn’t only happen once.
In fact after this rendezvous, it was as if a magnetic force attracted both of you and no matter how much you both fought it, one way or another you ended up having sex at one or the other's house.
Jay's teasing was pure torture as he could see from miles away that something really had happened between the two of you.
It was Will who confessed his love first, in the grip of emotions and no longer able to pretend you were just friends with benefits for even a second. You told him it took him a long time and that you loved him madly too, and the rest was history.
So here you were several years later, married to the love of your life and living the fairy tale you've always dreamed about.
“Babe please…” you sighed, eyes half closed as his lips worked their magic on that particular spot on your neck. You had to go to work but that seemed to take a backseat as your mind was completely dazzled by the hurricane that was your husband.
His arms wrapped around your hips and his hands went down to your ass, which they squeezed and groped without any shame. That made you sigh as you wrapped your arms around his neck, threading your fingers through his soft hair and pulling it lightly.
“Fuck,” he hissed, making him lose the last bit of control he had in his body and you grinned knowing how much he liked it when you pulled his hair. Before you could say or do anything, his lips had captured yours in a deep, passionate kiss as you took slow steps towards the bed
You both fell onto the mattress, bouncing slightly and you both let out a laugh before kissing again, him on top of you. It didn't take long for both of you to undress and throw all your clothes on the floor, losing yourself inexorably in each other.
Needless to say, you arrived at Intelligence incredibly late, thanking all the angels in heaven when you realized Voight hadn't arrived yet by the time you entered the unit.
“Why were you late?” Jay asked as soon as you arrived, handing you a cup of coffee he had set aside for you. He only had to look at you for his question to be answered, the stupid smile on your lips clearer than sunlight. “Actually never mind, don't answer. You're disgusting.“
“Hey! First of all you asked and second, go talk to your brother, he’s always so insatiable,” you replied with the sole purpose of annoying the younger Halstead. You succeeded in your aim when an expression of pure disgust and horror appeared on his face.
“You make me sick I don't want to know about you having sex with my brother for God's sake!” He exclaimed as you continued to laugh out loud.
You and Jay were now detectives and members of the Intelligence Unit for quite some time and as luck would have it, Voight even assigned you as partners. It was great to work with a friendly face, to have someone to deal with all the shit that humanity presented, to be there for each other when the other felt like everything was too hard to handle.
You and Jay continued to have a little banter but that little idyllic moment was interrupted when Voight entered the unit with Sergeant Platt and from their expressions you immediately understood they didn’t bring any good news.
Badly cut drug was circulating through the Chicago streets, causing numerous overdose victims, and there was pressure to get this case solved immediately.
Something told you this case would take much longer than necessary, so you took advantage of every free moment to text Will and update him on the evolution of the situation.
Will was afraid he’d be committed to Dr. Charles' psych ward sooner or later due to the stress your and Jay's job brought him.
He couldn't help but feel the anxiety eating his stomach up every time you told him you had some kind of field operation to do. It was a horrible feeling, having no idea what was going on out there, not being able to protect you or his brother if something horrible happened.
Every single day was a prayer. He prayed you both would come home safely, he prayed he could hug you both again at the end of each shift.
He tried not to give too much weight to his paranoid thoughts and convince himself it was only his sense of protection speaking. You and Jay were more than capable of defending yourselves even in dangerous situations, Will knew that, but that didn't make it any easier.
Many times he had wondered why neither you nor Jay had opted for a safer career, so he wouldn't risk a heart attack every time you left the house. You could’ve been teachers, or cooks, coaches, anything, but no, you both had to choose one of the most dangerous professions in the world. And so he didn't have to worry about his wife or just his brother's, but both.
His heart could only bear it to a certain extent.
And that day was no different when you texted him you and Jay were on your way to question a suspect.
Knowing you were in the district would calm him down a little since you were safe there, but knowing you were both out there with the risk of dying just around the corner was pure torture.
“How much you wanna bet he’ll run away as soon as he sees us?” You asked Jay as you got out of the car and walked towards the driveway of the house where the suspect was supposed to be. He wasn't directly involved with the drugs but, after the team started the investigations, you discovered he knew who was indeed involved and both you and Jay were determined to find out who that person was.
“Nah I pass, I know for sure this will happen so let’s just get ready to do some running,” he replied and you laughed before knocking twice loudly on the door.
“Chicago PD! Open up!” You exclaimed and you and Jay waited a few moments in which there was nothing but silence.
Jay moved away from the door and went to the window to check if there was actually anyone inside and you knocked again with two more loud thuds. “Open the door we just want to talk!”.
What happened was so quickly you wouldn't have been able to tell it if someone had asked you.
The suspect you were supposed to question – a guy in his mid-twenties – opened the door but you had your guard down so you couldn’t react as quickly as you wished. You saw him hold the gun and point it at you, you had tried as quickly as possible to take your gun from its holster but before you could do so a shot had already been fired and a bullet had already passed through your abdomen.
As you said, everything happened quickly.
The bullet shot immediately triggered Jay who quickly pulled out his gun and only then realized with pure horror you had been shot.
Before he could attempt to shoot the suspect, the bastard had already run away at the speed of light even if at that moment Jay didn't care.
He ran towards you and picking you up he dragged you away from the porch of that house, not wanting to run the risk that someone else might shot at you, and he carried you behind your car.
“Hey, hey, hey it's okay, don’t move. Everything's going to be okay, you hear me Y/n? You’ll be fine,” He tried to reassure you, to no avail as you had a bullet in your abdomen and were bleeding profusely, before immediately calling for help as panic coursed through his veins.
You were still shocked even as you lifted your head for the asphalt and saw your wound bleeding more than it should have. You tried to cover it with your hands but Jay did it for you, after taking a jacket he had in the car and pressing it to the wound.
“Shit,” you hissed. The pain was excruciating, even if the adrenaline helped to dull the sensation a little. A flood of emotions overwhelmed you, panic, fear, confusion. Your eyes looked around frantically as if to try to convince your mind you were still alive, that everything was going to be okay.
“Help is on the way Y/n, please hold on okay? You’ll be fine I’m sure,” Jay continued to babble, more to himself than to you.
“It-it hurts…” you stuttered, closing your eyes for a few moments as you felt your heart pounding in your chest.
“Hey, hey, hey, don't you dare fall asleep, just hang on for a minute. Please… Everything will be fine...“ he kept repeating.
But his voice began to reach your ears far away. That warm, burning sensation coursing through your abdomen was starting to fade and the weakness was instead starting to take over you. You were fighting so hard to try and stay awake, even though you were in that state you knew this didn’t mean anything good.
“Y/n!” Suddenly you heard Jay's voice and your eyes widened. You didn't even realize you had closed them.
“Jay can you believe…” you winched “Can you believe for just one second I will live?” You continued trying to smile seeing the way Jay was looking at you. You saw him so scared and worried for other few times in your life, and if it hadn't been for the bullet, you would probably have made fun of him.
“Of course you’l live Y/n, of course I believe it. Who will make my life a living hell if you're gone?”.
You giggled at those words. “L-look at my little brother-in-law worrying about me,” you whispered, as you got weaker with each second that passed. Your eyelids felt heavy, you were struggling to keep your eyes open, or even just to speak.
Your mind was racing, a thousand thoughts were invading it, which was in stark contrast to your physical state as you struggled to even lift your hands.
But the first thought was your husband, your beloved Will. How would he react? What would’ve he said? You hated the thought of not being the first to tell him, to comfort him knowing how worried he would be.
“No of course I’m not,” Jay replied, letting out a sound of mock disdain, making you smile weakly again. “I'm just worried about Will, I don’t care about you. I know he’s going to fucking kill me once he’ll find out.”
You tried to let out a laugh but a cough stopped it.
You fought for Will above all, because you refused to leave like this, to give up right when you were living the life of your dreams with the love you had wanted for so long. But in that moment, as your strength slowly left your body as quickly as your blood spread across the asphalt, you needed him so much.
You wanted Will, you wanted him to hold your hand, you wanted him to whisper it was going to be okay and you’d be fine in no time, you wanted him to hug you and make you forget all the pain and fear that was paralyzing you, you wanted to run a hand through his hair and tell him to calm down when he’d freak out.
And you really tried to resist.
But you were tired, so exhausted, you just wanted to be able to rest a little.
And that was exactly how you let yourself slip into the darkness of oblivion, the last thought being Will's eyes.
“Y/n? Hey! Please don't play with me right now,” Jay shook your shoulders slightly when he realized you had closed your eyes. “I know you're joking, just wake up it’s not funny.”
But nothing, he didn't receive any response.
And after several attempts to wake you up he had to accept you had lost consciousness and you weren't joking at all.
He looked around waiting for the damn ambulance to arrive and when he finally saw it from afar, he thought it was a mirage, too good to be true.
Meanwhile Will was unaware of everything that was happening out there, that his world was collapsing on him without even realizing it.
“Your tests came back normal but we'll keep you here for observation for another couple of hours just to make sure everything is fine, and we'll keep you hydrated in the meantime, okay?”.
“Okay, thank you so much Dr. Halstead.”
Will gave the lady lying on the bed a smile before leaving her room and closing the door behind him. He sanitized his hands and walked over to the nurses' station where he took the patient's medical records, updating her tests and treatment.
He couldn't help but take his cell phone from his uniform pocket, noticing with disappointment there was no message from you. He let out a sigh, trying to stay calm and convince himself he was just overreacting even if anxiety was gripping his stomach.
He put down the patient’s chart he had just seen, playing with the ring on his ring finger while a nurse informed him of the arrival of another patient who was already waiting for him.
If only he had waited a few seconds longer, if only he hadn't immediately entered that room, he would’ve seen that the person who had just entered the emergency room, unconscious, was the very last person he would’ve ever wanted to see in those circumstances, the person whose safety he worried about night and day, one of the people he loved most in the world.
Jay couldn't reach you at the hospital right away since he was waiting for Voight's orders on what to do but nevertheless he didn't stop thinking about you for a second and hoping that you were still alive.
Will treated the patient who came to the hospital following a chainsaw accident while chopping wood. With the help of a nurse, he sutured and dressed the fairly deep cut on the patient's leg while in the next room Connor and the rest of the team worked to revive you from the cardiac arrest you had just fallen into.
It took about twenty minutes for him to finish treating the patient, who he recommended to return to check the wound and assigned medicines in case of infection or pain. When he left the room, he did again what he had done earlier: disinfect his hands and update the medical records.
“Woah, what happened in there?” Will asked one of the new nurses that had recently started working when his gaze fell on the now room.
He saw the state in which that room was, copious traces of blood stained the floor on which numerous bright red patches were scattered, soaked in the same blood of the victim he thought he didn't know. The defibrillator was nearby and positioned crookedly on its trolley indicating it had been used and Will hoped that whoever it was, had managed to survive.
“A gunshot victim, bad story. She went into cardiac arrest twice but they were able to revive her and Dr. Rhodes just took her to the OR,” explained the nurse who, being new, didn't know that said victim was his superior's wife.
Will nodded, looking away from the room for a second before handing her the patient’s medical record he had just seen and putting the pen back in his white coat’s pocket.
He took out his cell phone again, noting with equal disappointment that no message had arrived from you. He sighed again before putting it down and his gaze fell on that room again.
His gaze fell on the victim's objects which were in a transparent bag placed on one of the bedside tables next to the now absent bed. He didn't want to snoop but curiosity got the better of him and he thought maybe he could help track down the family.
His heart almost stopped when he recognized your clothes in that bag.
“What the fuck?” He whispered as his brain struggled to process what he was seeing. There was a police badge, among other items. Anxiety gripped his stomach in a vice, twisting it until he almost felt like he was going to throw up.
“No, no, no, no,” he babbled to himself as his eyes continued to scan the numbers on the badge again and again.
It was yours.
No, it couldn't be true, there had to be an explanation. There had to be a reason why your badge and clothes had to be there.
While his heart continued to beat voraciously in his chest, Will continued to look among those objects. There was also the gun and a cell phone, yours.
His hands began to shake as all of his worst nightmares seemed to come true. He couldn't believe it, he just couldn't, until the very end he hoped there had been some kind of misunderstanding, that it was definitely someone else but for some strange reason they had managed to take your gun, badge, cell phone and even your bloody clothes.
But it was when he saw the ring that he felt as if a train had hit him. There was no doubt it was your ring, a ring that was stained with your own blood.
Will felt as if the ground had slipped beneath his feet, for a moment so out of his mind everything seemed to happen in a blur.
He immediately ran out of that damned room, making space among his colleagues and passers-by and running like a madman towards the ORs. He looked crazy, but he didn't care, he didn't care to stop and apologize to the people he was clashing with, he just wanted to reach you.
This can't be true, please God.
He had to make sure, it couldn't really be happening.
He didn't even wash his hands before entering the OR, he simply took a surgical mask and placed it in front of his nose before entering where Connor was operating.
If Will had to describe how he felt, he would’ve said he felt like he was dying, that he felt the air stuck in his throat and his lungs collapsing. He felt his legs give way and had to lean on the doorframe leading to the OR to avoid falling on the floor.
It was you.
It was really you.
Unconscious and with a tube down your throat, but it was you.
“Why the fuck didn't anyone call me!” Will almost shouted, his hands shaking with fear and anger, holding back the desire to run to you and grab your hand since he wasn't sterile.
“Will, get out of here,” Connor replied, looking up from your open abdomen for just a second so he could look at his friend and the desperation he had on his face.
“How is she? Connor please tell me something,” the redhead begged as his eyes filled with tears.
“Will. Out. Now.”
“I'm not going anywhere until you tell me how you she is. She's my fucking wife, I'm her husband! I have to know!”.
“This is exactly why you can't stay here! I can't operate if you're here and I'm trying to save her fucking life so get out of my OR immediately!” Rhodes exclaimed loudly, feeling guilty for the tone he had used since Will was only worried about you, but thinking it was necessary. He looked up at one of the nurses and nodded at him at which he nodded back and walked over to Will, inviting him to come outside.
“Don't fucking touch me,” Will spat through gritted teeth, his eyes shining before walking out of the OR.
He slumped against the wall and slid down until he was sitting on the floor, legs bent and elbows resting on his knees while he had his hands on his face.
What the fuck happened?
It was unbelievable, he couldn't process it.
How did you go from making love that same morning to you having surgery a step from the death?
Where the fuck was Jay? Why wasn't he there?
Will let out a sob, praying with all his heart that at least his brother was okay. God only knew he wouldn't be able to survive if Jay got hurt too.
“Will!”.
But when he heard Jay's voice calling him out, a wave of relief washed away some of the anguish that had been plaguing him. Will stood up and saw Jay running towards him. He hugged him, in tears, holding him so tight his bones almost broke.
“What the hell happened Jay? Where the fuck were you? Why didn’t you call me? You okay?” Will peppered him with questions, taking a look at his brother and noticing with horror the blood staining his shirt.
“I'm fine… I-I'm so sorry Will, this shouldn't have happened I…” Jay blathered, also scared to death even though he knew what he was feeling was nothing compared to how Will must’ve going through at that moment. He told him what had happened. “How is she?”.
Will shook his head, as if to tell him he didn't know, and collapsed, letting himself go into tears full of terror, fear, fright. Jay wrapped an arm around his shoulders and helped him sit down, trying in vain to comfort him.
What would he have done if you hadn't survived? How could he go on with his life if you weren't there?
He didn't even want to imagine it, he didn't want to find answers to these questions because there actually weren't any answers. Will couldn't be without you.
He had known you since they were only a few years old, he had grown up with you, he had laughed, he had cried, he had fun with you, he had confided to you his deepest secrets, his deepest fears, he couldn't even think of not being able to do all this anymore. He remembered your friendship with so much warmth and joy before falling in love with you without even realizing it.
You made him happy, you understood him, you were his best friend, his lover, his wife, his confidant. Loving you felt like winning the lottery, marrying you was the most beautiful gift life could ever give him, he couldn't even think that all this was hanging by just a thread.
What would he have done without your laugh, your horrible jokes, without your smile, your eyes, the warmth of your hugs? How was he going to survive?
No, no, no, she’s going to be fine. She will be okay.
You were strong, one of the strongest people he had ever met in his life, there was no difficulty you wouldn't have solved, there was no obstacle you wouldn't have overcome. If anyone could do this it was you, Will knew you were going to be okay.
He jumped up, no longer able to sit still. Time seemed to stand still, passing so slowly that every minute was pure agony.
“Will…”
“Shut up Jay!” Will exclaimed loudly, not caring about other people. Jay remained silent as he stood up as well, letting his brother vent. “Where the fuck were you! You were supposed to protect her why weren't you there?!”
Will was not thinking clearly anymore because of the anger, not anger directed towards Jay – he knew it wasn’t his fault but only of the bastard that pulled the trigger.
He approached Jay and pushed him but Jay didn't react, his heart actually clenched as he saw the suffering Will was going through. He would probably have reacted the same way if his wife was fighting between life and death.
“If anything happens to her Jay… Fuck!”.
Jay raised a hand and shook his head when one of the doctors passing by tried to intervene, telling him he had everything under control.
“She’ll be fine brother. C'mon, this is Y/n, we know her, there’s nothing that woman can’t do.”
“How do you know huh?!” Will exploded, running his hands through his hair in frustration and desperation.
“I just know Will, she’ll make it, I'm sure of it,” Jay replied more calmly, moving closer to his brother. This time he was the one to hug him although Will resisted for a while, telling him to let him go. Jay didn't do it, he continued to hug him and hold him until he gave up and returned the hug.
Will cried on Jay's shoulders for the longest time, praying with every fiber of his being and whoever was up there to make you survive, to make you okay.
“I just want her back…” he whispered, not sure if Jay had heard him.
Jay helped him sit back down. “And you’ll get her back, just have a little faith. She is so strong man, do you really think she’ll leave us like this? C’mon, she has to be here and annoy us for the rest of our lives.”
Will chuckled through his tears, his eyes so blurry he couldn't make out the objects in front of him. He and Jay sat in that waiting room, waiting for hours to hear from you as he kept desperately praying.
Will sat with his head in his hands and his elbows on his knees while he continued to move a leg obsessively.
He had always tried to calm the patients' families, never fully understanding how they must really feel. But now that he knew, he felt guilty for not trying harder.
Please stay with me baby. Please just hang on for a little bit, please fight for us.
He had never understood what it felt like to be completely useless, what it felt like to be unable to do anything for the person you loved most in the world, to be unable to do anything to prevent that person from suffering.
He had always sworn to protect you, to not let anything hurt you and he felt like a failure for not being able to do this. He wished that damned bullet had hit him, that it had been him on the operating table having to fight for his life.
At every slightest noise he jumped, hoping it was Connor bringing good news but when he finally actually saw him appear in front of him, he feared it was just a hallucination.
Connor approached Will and Jay who jumped to their feet as soon as they saw him arrive.
“How did it go? Is she okay? Please tell me he's okay, Connor,” Will stammered, his heart beating so fast he thought he was going to have a massive heart attack.
“It was tough but she did well. The bullet had hit an artery and I managed to extract it but she lost a lot of blood and the next few hours will be delicate. But I'm pretty optimistic and she'll make a full recovery.”

Jay is begging again. He wants children. He’s brought it up in the past and you’ve always brushed it off with a hearty no, saying you both weren’t ready for that type of commitment, let alone with your types of jobs... Not right now. But this time is different. He stopped mid-kiss to look you in the eye and asked the question.
“Can we have a baby?”
Your throat runs dry. You couldn’t care for a kid, not now when your lives have just only begun to settle down into the first day of your honeymoon, which started straight after your chaotic wedding. But yet you couldn’t help feeling a tingle brew in your lower gut. The desperation in his eyes made your thighs squeeze together. The choked whimper in his words filled your need to please. And how could you possibly say no to your newly wedded husband while staring directly into his beautiful loving eyes? They swim with lust…. you were at a loss.
“Hmm, my Love,” you whispered, facing your body fully to him, having discarded your phone onto the side dresser while you were deep in thought. It wasn’t a yes per say, but the way you smiled with a subtle nod made him move into action.
His green eyes brighten like he has just heard the best news in his entire life as he was on you within seconds, kissing you deeply and caressing your sides. You moan into the kiss, grabbing either side of his head to hold him in place. His touch sends shivers down your spine and goosebumps across your body. You have never thought of it because of your precautions but just thinking about him going in raw gets you wet. You shift a hand down between your legs and start to rub your clit with two fingers. But a hand quickly stops you.
Jay pulls away and looks at you. “Let me,” he begs.
He looks and sounds more desperate than you feel. This man must have been yearning for ages. And now he’s finally getting it. He’s just a sloppy mess. You push him back onto the bed, his eyes on you the entire time. You climb on top of him and sit on top of his crotch. You grind down a little, feeling him grow in his pants a little. His hands grab your waist quickly, but you have other ideas. If he’s been wanting this, he’ll have to earn it. You grab his wrists and he lets go with loose fingers. Pinning his hands above his head, you suddenly feel the thrill of being on top. Looking down on him and seeing the desperation upon his delicate features. His mouth is parted and he’s breathing heavily already. It’s truly a sight to see that turns you on.
“Now if you want this, you’re going to have to ask nicely,” you whisper in his ear.
A moan is pushed from his lips as you grind down again at his lack of response. “Please,” he begs. “Let me.”
Satisfied, you let go of his hands but tsk, “Keep them there,” You ordered with a fake tone of dominance, at this point you sounded more cheeky and light-hearted, but neither of you cared. He keeps his arms above him but his gaze is all over you. You can feel his neediness rubbing against your clothed core. Shuffling down, you begin to undo his belt and pants. You stop every time he moves and wait for him to fall silent again. After a solid five minutes of playing this little game of tug and pull, you shuffle his pants off his ankles. His cock is fully erect and leaking. With a grin across your face, you sit on his thighs, placing your soft fingers down his waist. He flinches slightly but keeps his mouth shut.
“So you want kids?” You chuckle.
“Honestly,” he admits, “I couldn’t care less about that right now.”
“Oh, okay.” You reach over to the bedside table and open it. “I’ll just wrap you up then.”
“No!” He shouts and grabs you away from the table. “No,” he says more softly.
You laugh and pat his cheek. “You’re sweet. But I do have to grab the lube.”
He smiles widely and toothy as you reach for the bedside table again, grabbing a small bottle of lube out. You slick up your hand and finally begin rubbing his dick. His hips buck up slightly and he suppresses a moan.
“Let it out, honey,” you whisper.
He exhales harshly and his arms move slightly above him. You stop and squeeze the base of his dick. He chokes on a moan but another escape and oh my, it sounds heavenly. Why haven’t you done this before? This is another side of your husband you haven’t seen. You move up on your knees and push your nightie up your thighs with the hand that was on his dick. You reach between your thighs and move your underwear to the side, not wasting any more time with taking them off. With the lube on your fingers and the wetness coming from you, two fingers slide in easily. The pleasure zips through you and makes you hunch over Jay. You finger yourself above his dick, breathing into his neck.
“Keep your arms up there now,” you moan. You meant it to come out as an order, but opening yourself up over him is doing something to you you never thought would.
“Please, I just want to touch you,” he pleads.
“We can stop if you want.” You plant a kiss on his lips. “Or we can keep going.”
He shakes his head frantically. “Please. I just want to fuck you,” he pants.
You kiss him again with more want and bring your free hand to comb through his hair. Then you reach down and grab the base of his cock to line it up. He moans into your mouth as you slide down halfway onto him. You pull away gasping. You want more.
“You can touch me,” you say but it comes more out as a whine.
His hands whip forward and grab your hip and ass cheek, giving it a firm squeeze. He’s a mess right now and you’re loving it. You bob lightly up and down on him, feeling him rub up against you, sending prickles of pleasure up your spine. He guides you down slowly with each thrust until you’ve swallowed him to the base. He lets you sit there, taking his full length in for a moment before you decide to move on your own accord. You shift your hips upwards with your hands planted on Jay’s stomach before moving downwards. You set a rhythm for yourself but soon enough he’s thrusting up into you. You’re gasping and moaning each time he drives you down on his cock. You get lost in the moment and pick up the pace to chase your own high. You fall on top of Jay and he wraps one of his arms around your waist while the other snakes down to grip your panties.
"I'm sorry." His words were quick and so was the sound of a snap of fabric. Did he literally just rip your underwear? "I'll buy you more."
"You better." You choke out a moan as he throws the broken fabric somewhere in the room. He brings his knees up and begins thrusting up into you from another angle. It sends a thrill through you that has you moaning louder. You’re both a mess and all of the teasing and playing hard to get suddenly didn’t matter anymore.
“I’m- I’m gonna-” He pants in your ear. He holds onto you more tightly as he buries his face into your neck. With a few stuttering thrusts, you feel him release inside of you. And oh god just the hot sensation of being filled up sends you over the edge as well. You squeeze down tight around him and you can already feel some of his cum dripping down his cock, leaking out of your hole. After the high end, you slowly bring yourself up, his cock still inside you, letting his cum stay deep inside you. Collecting yourself, you glance to see Jay grinning up at you with a glowing smile. It brings a smile to your face as well even though you don’t know why he’s so ungodly happy.
“What?” You ask, stroking his chest with one hand.
“I hope it’s a girl,” Is all he says. That earned him a light slap on the shoulder.

Pairing: jay halstead x reader
Summary: Jay is y/n husband and he left her for eight months to go to Bolivia. When he came back, he couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw his wife again
Warning: none i guess, maybe a little bit of angst
English is not my first language, sorry if there’s some mistakes!
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
When your husband came home that day asking you to sit down on the couch, you didn’t think that he was going to say what he actually said. You two worked at Intelligence for four years and you didn’t think possible for him to change the way he did. When you first met him you immediately knew that he was kind, gentle and a good cop: you knew that he would have done everything to help innocents and to stop criminals, you knew that he was a good person.
And then something changed.
You didn’t know if that was because of his partner, Hailey Upton, or because of Voight; you just knew that you didn’t recognize him anymore. You even talked about it with Adam, your partner, but you weren’t able to find a way to help him get through that.
You just wanted him to be happy again, you just wanted him to be himself again.
That’s why you let him go.
When he told you that he accepted the job in Bolivia you couldn’t believe it, you just couldn’t.
Was he running away from the unit or was he running away from you?
You didn’t know what was true, but you couldn’t just deny him to be happy again: if he needed to go, you would have let him go.
And that’s exactly what you did.
“It will be for eight months maybe a little longer, okay? I will be back home soon.” He said that day, kissing your forehead with glossy eyes. “I love you… i really do but i need to do this. Please don’t be angry with me, i’ll come back to you, i promise. You’re the love of my life, y/n.”
When he left some minutes later to take his flight, you fell on the ground, crying; you needed him near you, you needed him there with you but you just couldn’t deny him to be himself again.
That’s why you didn’t tell him the truth.
That’s why you hid it from him.
When Kim knocked at your door that night after having heard about Jay, you let her in and you just walked back to the couch, where you cried all day.
“Y/n…” she whispered, walking towards you and hugging you tightly. “It’s okay. It’s temporary, right? He will come back, okay?”
You didn’t say anything, you didn’t nod or shook your head in response, you just kept crying again and again and then, after some minutes, you spoke.
“We perfectly know that he can die there.” You said, finally telling the truth, finally admitting out loud what you had in your mind all day since he talked to you.
“Oh, y/n…” she kept hugging you and she also placed her hand on your shoulder, trying to reassure you in some way. She wanted to say something, she wanted to help you go through all of that but her eyes fell on it.
It was on the table in front of the couch, exactly where you placed it after Jay left.
“What’s that?” She asked, keeping her eyes on the small object; she reached it and she looked at the result when you didn’t complain about it, then she looked up at you, shocked. “You’re pregnant?”
You wanted to cry, you wanted to scream, you wanted be alone in your thoughts, but Kim was there trying to help you and you really appreciated that, that’s why you just nodded, answering her.
“Does Jay know about it? Did He really leave you here alone knowing that you’re pregnant?”
Kim knew the answer deep down, she knew that Jay wouldn’t have left you there knowing that you were pregnant but she needed to know it for sure; when you shook your head saying “no”, she hugged you tighter.
“Oh, darling.” She whispered, caressing your back slowly and gently. “You should’ve told him, Y/n, i’m sure he wouldn’t have left knowing that.”
You sobbed, then you looked up at her and you shook your head again.
“T-That’s why i-i d-din’t tell him. He needed t-to go Kim, i c-couldn’t stop him.”
“But he had the rights to know the truth before taking such a decision!” She replied, shaking her head in disagreement.
“When he came here telling me about the job in Bolivia he already took it, he accepted it without even talking about it with me. I would have told him if he hadn’t already accepted it. He told me that he had a flight in few hours, how could i have told him? I know, after all, that he’s lost. He’s not himself anymore and, if taking that job is going to help him, then i will accept it. He said, after all, that’s only for eight months.” You said, even if he said that there was the possibility that he needed to stay a little longer. “When he will be back home, i will still be pregnant and he will be able to be here when our baby is born.”
Kim didn’t agree with you but you was still shocked, that’s why she didn’t say anything: she just hugged you, promising you that she would have help you.
And she did, as all your unit.
Kim, Adam, Hailey, Kevin, Hank and also Trudy helped how they could.
In the next months they helped you, they came to your house to keep you company and they accompanied you to the hospital every time you needed to do a visit.
You were never alone after all, but you knew, however, that the most important person for you wasn’t there. You couldn’t blame him since you didn’t tell him the truth, but still you missed him so much.
Your baby was healthy but he, or she, wasn’t ready to be born yet, even if one week passed since the due date.
In some ways you were relieved because you really wanted Jay to be there when you would’ve become a mother. Every single time someone knocked at your door or every single time your phone rang, you panicked, afraid that something happened to your husband while he was still in Bolivia. You didn’t talked to him in the last few months, mostly because you didn’t want to distract him during a mission and because you were always afraid of blowing his cover.
That’s why you hardly talked to him or contacted him on the phone, and he did the same thing for the same reasons.
Until you didn’t hear anything about him from the army, you knew that he was okay, you knew that he was still alive. And every day you kept going on, holding on this thought, holding on the fact that no one called you, so he had to be safe, he had to be alive.
You didn’t know when he would’ve returned home, but you just hoped that it was soon; you couldn’t get through labor without him by your side.
That day you was ready to go to the hospital for another visit with your gynecologist. You asked Adam to come with you and he immediately accepted; that’s why, when you heard someone knocking at your door, you thought it was him.
“C-Coming.” You said, trying to get up from the couch where you were waiting for him. Your belly was so big that it was difficult for you to get up easily. “Just give me one minute, i’m trying to get up from the couch.”
At the other side of the door there was not at all Adam, there was Jay with his bag on the shoulder, happy to be home again, happy to be able to see his wife again. But when he heard you saying that she was having difficulties getting up from the couch, he froze, thinking that you might have been hurt at work.
Before he could say anything, the door opened in front of him and he immediately looked at his wife; he was left speechless, standing in front of the door frame, looking at his wife that was definitely pregnant.
“J-Jay?” You whispered, shocked. You didn’t expect him to be there, you thought that he would have informed you before coming home, but he was there, in front of you in all his beauty. Being so far from him for almost nine months was hard for you: you went through hell alone, especially when you almost lost your baby, and having him in front of you was like a dream. You definitely thought that you were still dreaming.
“You’re pregnant.” He said, unable to look away from your belly. He let go the bag that he had on his shoulder, letting it fall to the ground. He couldn’t believe his eyes, he just couldn’t believe it. “Am i the father?”
That was the first thing that popped into his mind when he saw you and he immediately regretted saying that out loud when he saw your face.
“What do you mean? Are you really thinking that i slept with someone else just right after your departure? You’re my fucking husband, of course you’re the father.”
You were so angry.
You didn’t even realize it till that moment.
You were so angry because he left you alone with a baby in your belly, even if he didn’t know it, even if it wasn’t his fault since you decided not to tell him the truth. But you were definitely angry: he stayed away for so long and the first thing that he asked you is if you got pregnant with someone else?
“Why didn’t you tell me? I would have come back!” He said after few moments, still standing in front of the door, still shocked by the news.
“You took the job before asking me what i thought about it, what did i have to do? You didn’t even took one day to talked with me! You came here, saying that you were going to Bolivia and that you had a flight that same day!“
Jay knew that coming back home wouldn’t have been easy, he knew that you would’ve been upset and you had all the rights to be angry with him, but he definitely didn’t expect to come home and find you pregnant.
“Wait, did you know you were pregnant when i left?!”
You froze, then you stepped back and you invited him to enter the apartment, to talk about it privately.
Jay immediately came in, leaving the bag on the ground, completely focused on his wife. You closed the door behind you two and you leaned against the kitchen counter, sighing.
Jay, even if he was mad at you, immediately walked towards you and helped you; then he took a chair and he invited you to sit down, placing an hand on your shoulder and caressing you gently. You appreciated it but you perfectly knew that you two have still to talk about it.
“Yes.” You answered after that, placing an hand on your own belly, caressing it gently and feeling the baby kicking you hard. “I discovered it the same morning you accepted the job. I wanted to tell you when you came home but you talked first and I couldn’t tell you after that.”
Jay couldn’t believe his ears, he couldn’t believe that his wife hid something important like a baby from him for almost nine months. You should have told him, you should have told him the truth because he wouldn’t have left knowing that you were pregnant with his baby.
“You should have told me, Y/n!” He wasn’t able to control himself, he just yelled at you and, after that, he regretted it. You slightly jumped on the chair, with tears running down your cheeks. You knew that, you knew that he had all the rights to be angry with you but you weren’t prepared for this. You just wanted him to be home because you needed him but you never thought about how he would’ve reacted at the news. You had time to prepare yourself to become a mother and then he came home and discovered that he’s going to become a father in what, few days?
“I’m sorry.” He immediately told you, kneeling in front of you and placing his hands on your arms. “I’m sorry i yelled, it’s just that…. I wanted to know, I wanted to be here with you.”
You sobbed and cried, especially when his hands touched you after all that time. You missed him so much.
“I know.” You sobbed, looking at him. “I’m sorry, i wanted to tell you but I know that you wouldn’t left and… you said you needed it, I couldn’t stop you from that. I just wanted you to be happy again, I couldn’t see you so sad here. And… when you came here saying that you accept the job in Bolivia… i just couldn’t take it away from you. You were right saying that i had to let you go, i saw it in your eyes.”
Jay caressed your arms slowly and gently, then he leaned closer and he kissed your forehead.
“I’m sorry i left you alone.” He said, softly. And it was true. All the time, when he was in Bolivia for his new job, he thought about you and he felt guilty because he knew that you were alone, he knew that you would probably have been hurt. That’s why he asked Kim, Adam, Kevin and Hailey to be near you in case you needed them.
“Well, i wasn’t alone, was i?” You smiled softly through your tears; you took his hands and placed them on your belly the moment you felt your baby kicking. “He, or she, was with me all the time.”
Jay felt the kick against his palms and his eyes immediately filled with tears.
“Say hi to your daddy.” You whispered, apparently talking to your baby while looking at Jay in the eyes.
Jay wanted to say something, wanted to kiss your belly and whispered something to it like he was talking to your baby, but before he could say something, you moaned in pain.
“What’s wrong?” He immediately asked, concerned. “Is everything okay, babe?”
You looked down at yourself when you felt your legs wet.
“Oh no.” You whispered.
Jay looked at you, confused. “What’s happening?”
You looked at him and moaned in pain.
“ i think I’m in labor.”
“Fuck.” He said, placing an hand on his mouth after that. “I’m sorry, i swore in front of the baby!”
You giggled and shook your head but you were interrupted by the first contraction; you moaned in pain and you looked up at him.
Hospital.” You whispered and he nodded.
“Hospital.” He agreed. “Holy shit, I’m going to be a father.”
“Jay.” You said while he took the car keys and the labor bag you prepared some weeks ago; he came back to you and he helped you get to your feet.
“I’m sorry!” He said, referring to his previous words.

Part 1 | Part 2
Tumblr media
“We’ll take care of you and your daughter.” You smiled at your patient reassuringly, noticing someone moving towards you in corner of your eye. Turning your head you saw a man with tousled hair standing at the threshold, his eyes almost hazy as his gaze skipped around the room.
“Where’s Leah?!”, he barked out, his eyes only focused on your patient. Your gaze flickered towards her, taking in the fear in her eyes and the gasp that left her lips. “Jake? How did you find us here?”, she whispered, oblivion dripping from her voice.
“Did you really think you could just leave and take our daughter with you? She’s my daughter too!” He took a threatening step closer, eyes narrowed. “Now, where is she?!”
Your patient’s breathing had quickened and a look at the heart monitor told you she was about to have a panic attack. “Sir, I need you to calm down and take a step back”, you said forcefully, drawing his attention on you. His eyes jumped to you, anger brimming in them.
“Like hell I will! I’m taking my wife and my kid home now!” Your eyes flickered towards the nurse, giving her a little nod to signal her to call the security service, before you met his again. “I can see you’re upset. But your wife and your daughter are sick. They need treatment and rest-”
“Shut up!” You flinched as he yelled at you, his loud voice alarming multiple people around you. “Everything okay in here?” Will appeared at the door, his eyes scanning the room until they landed at yours, staying there as he waited for an honest answer.
The man shook his head furiously, but he took a step back. You almost exhaled in relief. “I want to see my daughter! Now!”, he demanded, but before anyone could gave him an answer, he turned and ripped open the curtain to the next room.
You heard squeals, alarmed voices mixing with the sound of another curtain being ripped open. “Sir, I need you to leave now!” Will leaned forward to grab the man’s shoulder when suddenly he yanked out a gun, twisting around and pointing it right at Will’s chest.
A gasp escaped you as you watched Will stumble back, his hands raised. “Look man, we’re just trying to help, okay?” But the man, Jake, didn’t seem to hear any of it, his eyes filled with hatred and something that scared you even more; desperation and determination. A dangerous combination.
He wouldn’t leave until he got what he wanted.
“What’s going on here?” You heard Connor’s voice, saw him step out of a patient’s room and move towards the intruder. From his angle he couldn’t see the gun, couldn’t know the severity of the situation.
“Connor, no!” Your legs moved forward at the same time as the man turned around, the gun pointed at your brother. Everything seemed to happen so fast and in slow-motion at once as your body reacted purely on instinct, the fear for your brother carrying you forward.
You didn’t know if he meant to pull the trigger or if it was out of reflex, but you had no time to think about it as a shot rang out.
You would have screamed, but no sound left your mouth as the impact hit you, sending your body tumbling backwards until it hit the wall. Only moments before your feet had carried you forward, but now they suddenly couldn’t take your weight anymore, your body sinking to the ground.
Around you screams were erupting, but they sounded drowned out, as if you were underwater. Your name was being called, but it all seemed to blend into a haze.
You tried to peek at where you felt a sudden pressure in your body, shock mixing with confusion as you saw blood staining your clothes. Just seconds ago you had been standing in a patient’s room and now you were on the ground, your own blood pooling around your feet. It didn’t make sense.
From the periphery of your eye you saw people running. Some moved towards you, but most of them the opposite way. Away. They were running away.
And they were pushing, tripping, falling over each other. “Put down the gun!” You saw one of the security men approach, his own gun drawn at the attacker. Another shot cut through the atmosphere, but to your horror it was the security man that fell, blood splattering from a wound to his front.
“Everyone just back off!”
Jake’s sharp voice snapped you out of your shock and all at once reality hit you. Pain sank in, slowly at first and then in a stream of hot sensations. Tears formed in your eyes at the burning pain and you grit your teeth, trying to will it away, because you knew you needed to be aware of what happened next.
Lifting your head slightly you found the ER had mostly cleared out, only a few people remaining. Among them were Will and Connor, both of their bodies’ turned towards you in a way that suggested they had tried to get to you, their hands raised.
“Just let me get to my sister, okay? I’m a doctor and she needs help.” You stared at Connor, seeing the panic he tried to restrain as he appealed to the man reasonably. Jake’s eyes flickered towards you, hesitance written over his face.
“You didn’t want this to happen, do you?” Connor asked, his voice strained. “So let me make this better. Let me help.” He was pleading now and another wave of panic filled you as you realized he was only mere seconds away from doing something reckless.
For a moment you thought you were going to throw up from the sickness that cursed through your body, but you feared you wouldn’t even be able to move your body in the state you were in.
Jake let out a frustrated breath, gesturing towards you with his gun. “Okay. Okay!” Connor rushed over to you immediately, his concerned eyes meeting yours. “Are you okay? How do you feel? Can you tell me where you’ve been hit?”
You tried to follow his questions, your mind spinning. Instead of an answer you let out a groan as Connor found your wound, pressing down on it. “We need to stop the bleeding.”
Now that he was here by your side a weakness took over your body and you welcomed it. Welcomed the dark, because it felt easier to lean into it than fight it. But it never swallowed you. As much as you wished you could just pass out, the pain didn’t end, keeping you caged in your body.
You didn’t need to ask him how serious your condition was. The urgency in Connor’s movement alone was enough for you to confirm it was bad, the seeping hot pain a further indicator.
You saw Jake still waving his gun around, speaking in an animated tone with Will and Maggie. To your left someone had crouched down next to the security guard and you felt a flicker of relief when you saw it was Ethan.
A cough rose up your throat and your body shook, sending an ache through you. When you wiped your mouth you noticed your skin had turned red.
“No, no, no”, your brother whispered, his eyes frantic. “Connor”, you said, your voice a little hoarse. He paused for a moment, both of you locking eyes in a quiet exchange. “I’m scared”, you whispered, feeling a few tears escape your eyes.
Connor swallowed, his eyes filled with desperation. “I know”, he leaned closer, “But you will be okay. I will fix it, okay?.”
You nodded slowly, needing to cling to his words. To hold onto the reminder that you would be okay. That your life wasn’t over when you hadn’t even started fully living yet.
It didn’t make sense. You had woken up a few minutes before your alarm clock, had been in an oddly good mood as you had gotten ready for work and even your patients had been unusually patient and grateful. Today was a good day. Not a day that could turn into such a catastrophe in the blink of an eye.
This didn’t happen. Maybe in books or on tv. But not here, not to people like you.
“Hey!” Dr. Goodwin appeared in your vision, bending down to Connor and you. “What’s the status?” You hadn’t seen her before, but knowing she was here already gave you a sparkle of hope. As the hospital’s executive director it was her job to find solutions, even in the face of the worst possible events. She would get them out of here, somehow.
“She’s been shot in the abdomen. No exit wound so the bullet is still inside. I believe she’s bleeding internally.”
You saw a shadow cloud Dr. Goodwin’s as she looked at you and it was as if you could see the wheels in her head turning as she assessed the situation.
“What’s going on?”, you asked weakly, needing to know if the others were safe. “Mr. Whitman demands to take his wife and daughter and leave. I was on the phone with the Chicago police department. They told me he’s got a history of domestic abuse and violence. The wife filed a report on him and moved states to get him out of her life.”
“And he found her now.” You gulped, slowly piecing the pieces together. Dr. Goodwin nodded, graveness written over her face. “So what’s the plan?” It was Connor, his voice urgent.
Dr. Goodwin sighed, taking off her glasses and pinching the brick of her nose. You had never seen her like this, so defeated, and it filled you with unease.
“The police is here and a squad team too. But there is no way we can let them inside or get someone outside right now without Mr. Whitman noticing. Right now they are preparing for getting just one person in. Unarmed.”
“What help is that going to be?” Connor let out a scoff and it annoyed you how quick to judge he was, and more so, that you agreed with him. What would another person talking to Jake change?
“It would be a trained officer, who has the experience and skills to deal with these kind of high pressure situations. The plan would be for him to try and talk to Mr. Whitman first and if that’s not effective either, assess the situation and make a move or get back to the team and share valuable information with them.”
You could see Connor still shaking his head, but Dr. Goodwin stood again. “It’s the only thing Mr. Whitman has agreed to. You know I would prefer to get everyone else out, but he has been clear. If one person leaves, he is going to make use of his gun again.”
“And what are we supposed to do now? Just wait?”
“Connor”, you tried to calm him, but his eyes snapped to yours. “We need an OR now! Monique!” The blonde nurse standing next to Ethan looked over. You could see the fear written all over her face. “Can you take over for a moment?”
She gave a nod, her eyes flickering to Jake who didn’t let them out of sight. Crouching down next to you the two quickly exchanged their hands applying pressure onto your wound, the sensation making you let out a groan.
But you pushed away the pain, trying to focus on Connor. “What are you doing?”, you hissed as you watched him get up, wishing you could hold him back.
“Dr. Rhodes, we should wait for the officer to arrive. Right now the situation is stable and I can’t risk-” “Stable? Is that what you call this?” Connor pushed himself fully up now, the movement catching Jake’s eye.
“Sit back down!” But Connor lifted his hands, taking a cautious step forward. “My sister likely suffers from an internal bleeding. We need an OR to-” “No! Nobody goes anywhere!”
Connor’s face fell, his shoulders sinking, but he took another step forward. The grip the fear had around your heart tightened. “Please, I need to stop the bleeding. You don’t want her to die, right?”
Jake stared at you for a moment before his attention was back on your brother. “I just want my daughter and my wife!”
“And we get that. We do. But she-”, he turned halfway towards you, his eyes not leaving Jake for a second, “has nothing to do with this. Let me save her life.”
“I said no one goes anywhere! You save her here or you don’t save her at all. It’s on you!”
You watched Connor open his mouth again, but before he could say another word Jake stepped forward, his gun pointed directly at his chest.
“Do I look like someone who’s joking?!”, he yelled, making everyone around him flinch. Connor made himself a little smaller, taking a small step backwards while shaking his head. “Yeah, so you better listen to what I’m saying! No get your ass back down there!”
You didn’t have the heart to watch Connor when he returned to you, to see the defeat and hopeless on his face. The fear.
He had barely sat down again when another turmoil broke loose, gaining everyone’s attention. It had to be the officer Jake had allowed in, though you didn’t want to know what he would get in return for the favour.
Although you didn’t feel much hope regarding the plan, you trusted the police to make the right choice. This couldn’t be their first hostage situation, so they knew what to do, right?
What you hadn’t anticipated was that the officer coming in could be someone you knew. Someone you knew very well.
Jay.
No.
You blinked a few times, but it was unmistakably him.
His voice. His physique.
A touch at your hand drew your attention away from him for a moment and you noticed Monique had reached for it. Only now you saw you had balled your hand into a fist, all the tension left in your body visible in that one grip. Slowly she loosened it, taking your hand into hers instead and squeezing it in reassurance.
You didn’t know the young nurse so well- she was a little more on the reserved and quiet side- but the gesture filled you with deep gratitude, giving you the strength to look up again and face this new reality.
Jay hadn’t noticed you yet, his whole focus on calming Jake enough to make an uneventful entrance. When he seemed confident in the situation he scanned the room, assessing the conditions they were dealing with.
He did it with a professional calmness you wished you could have right now, his face only giving away his emotion when they fell on his brother. “Hey, man. You alright?”
He stepped forward, avoiding any rapid movements and Will nodded. “I’m okay. But Mrs. Kaden is in a bad condition. The stress on top of her physical state worries me.”
He said something else, but he had lowered his voice that it was impossible for you to understand anything. Jay nodded. “What about the two victims?”
“The security guard got hit at the shoulder. He’s stable.” “And the other one?” Will shook his head, his eyes filled with sadness. “She’s over there with Connor. It doesn’t look good, Jay.”
It was strange, listening to them and knowing they were talking about you. Waiting for the moment Jay’s eyes fell upon you.
You didn’t know what kind of reaction you were anticipating, but nothing could have prepared you for the utter shock that filled Jay’s face as he looked at you.
You watched him do a double take, every trace of his confidence and expressionlessness gone, replaced by a turmoil of emotions. He almost lunged forward, stopping himself when Jake’s warning voice filled the air.
You could see Connor’s questioning gaze on you, but you were focused fully on Jay as he made his way over to you with careful movements.
When he crouched down in front of you, he was close enough for you to see a hint of fear in his eyes. “What happened?”
Your petty argument, the distance, it all seemed forgotten as you stared at him, not strong enough to hide your own fear. “I got shot.”
Although it was obvious, it was the first time you had said the words out loud, had acknowledged the fact that this was really happening to you. It felt surreal, even with the burning pain spreading through your body, making it impossible to keep your composure.
Jay’s eyes softened as he heard your husky voice, the effort it took you to form the words another sign how bad your current shape was. For a moment his eyes drifted over your body, his face twisting in pain as he stared at your blood, before he looked up again.
“He said he’s going to kill us if he doesn’t walk out of here with his wife and his kid.” Jay nodded, his lips pressed into a thin line. “I know.”
“But- you’re here now…right?”
“Yeah, I am.” Jay tried to force an encouraging smile on his face, but you knew him well enough to know it was strained.
“You’re here”, you repeated relieved, your voice almost giving up at the end and you coughed. Jay stared at you, his eyes a little widened, his pupils dilated in fear.
He was scared. For you. He was scared for you.
“Her pulse is up to 120 and she’s sweating.” It was Monique and you saw her exchange a look with Connor. “What’s her condition?” Jay was talking to Connor now, as if he had only now realized he was there.
Under different circumstances your brother wouldn’t have let go what had just happened right in front of his eyes. He would have teased you until you would have told him the truth about Jay and you. But now he did, just like that, knowing there was no time for it as yours was running out.
The thought sent another wave of fear through your body, but with the hot pain and the growing weakness you felt too overwhelmed to do anything about it. So you tried to focus on the feeling of Monique’s hand holding yours, on Jay’s closeness and your brother’s words.
“The bullet likely caused internal bleeding. She’s losing too much blood.” Connor almost ran a hand over his face like he always did when he was stressed, stopping himself when he saw your blood on his hands.
“What do you need?”
“I need an OR. I need to find the bleeding and stop it.” His voice was a mix of desperation and determination and Jay listened intensely. His mask of professionalism was back in place, the sight having something grounding to it in the midst of this chaos, but you could detect a few flaws where his emotions threatened to pour in.
“I’m here to negotiate”, he began, eyes cast towards Jake, continuing lowly, “but really I think this will take a different ending.”
You wanted to ask him what that meant, but it seemed too difficult and you were forced to watch him get up instead. As Connor tried to get up too you tried to catch his wrist. You failed, but the movement still let him pause.
“Don’t go, please”, you whispered, your body shaking. You wished you could stop it, but you had lost all control over it, and when had it become so cold?
You felt Jay’s eyes on you as Connor leaned down to you, placing his hands on the sides of your face. “You’re sweating and your pulse is way up. Your skin is ice cold and you’re pale. I don’t need to tell you what that means. We need to do something now.”
You felt tears run down your cheeks as you tried to shake your head, silently pleading him to stay. He had already risked it with Jake once. What would he do when Connor tried it again and this time he wouldn’t give up?
“I’m coming back.” Connor stroked your cheek once before pressing a kiss against your forehead. Then he was gone, his touch only a faint memory as your head sank back against the wall.
As the two walked away from you they blurred into nothing more than silhouettes. Muffled voices filled your ears, but they were too drowned out for you to understand anything. Monique was speaking to you too, the level of her tone indicating she was saying something to soothe you, but her words never reached you either.
A part of you wanted to pass out. As much as you wanted to know what happened, with Connor and Jay not by your side any longer all your fight had left you. The pain felt unbearable now, as if someone had lit your body on fire and the flames were eating at you, slowly burning you alive.
Your throat was closing and it was getting hard to breathe. Every once in a while you choked on air, raspy coughs escaping your mouth. And it was so cold. Colder than the winter in Chicago.
The last sound you heard before the darkness finally swallowed you was a gunshot.
-
The first thing you felt when you woke was the heaviness of your body, as if an invisible weight had been placed upon you.
You could hear the steady beeping of a monitor, the sound having something reassuring to it. You listened to it for a while, too tired to pull yourself out of the haze yet.
But then the events of the day came crashing back to you, the image of Jay and Connor both leaving your side to get Jake to let them save you. The sound of a gun going off.
You blinked your eyes open, your vision only slowly clearing. But eventually it sharpened, revealing the inside of a hospital room.
You weren’t surprised at the sight, but you still paused when you took in the IV you were hooked upon. “Look who’s awake.”
Turning your head you found April at the door, a smile on her lips. But you could see it wasn’t as effortless as usual and you wondered where she had been when all of it had happened.
Had she gotten out, left to wonder about Ethan’s and everyone else’s wellbeing? Or had she been hiding in one of the other patient rooms?
“How are you feeling?” She stepped into the room, beginning her check-up on you. You let her do it, squinting when she shone a bright light in your eyes. “I’ve felt better before”, you answered truthfully, growing slightly more aware or the pressure in your abdomen.
At least it didn’t hurt yet. You didn’t want to think of the moment the pain meds would wear off.
“Where’s my brother?” April had finished her tests, squeezing your hand. “He’s still in the hospital. I told him to go home and get some rest, but he insisted on staying.”
April shook her head, clearly disapproving of your brother’s choices. “But I did get him to take a shower. He should be in the on-call rooms right now. Do you want me to go and get him?”
You thought about it for a moment. “No, let him sleep. It’s been a hell of a day for him too.”
April nodded, a small smile on her lips. “What about detective Halstead? Do you want me to send him home too?”
You stared at her in surprise. “He’s still here? Wait- how much time passed?”
“5 hours. And yes, he’s here. Actually, he just got himself a coffee. I might have forgotten to mention how disgusting the one from the vending machine is.”
“You’re evil.” You narrowed your eyes at her, chuckling. April shrugged. “Can’t have anyone know our secrets. So what is it with you and the other Halstead. Is he the one you’ve been texting this whole time?”
You hesitated, ready to deny her words, because you were used to keeping it a secret. But you weren’t sure that was possible after today, and honestly it all seemed so unimportant know that you had almost lost your life.
“We were. But things are kind of- complicated between us so I’m not sure where we’re standing.”
“Well”, April walked towards the door, a smile on her lips, “whatever it is it can’t be so serious. You should have seen the way he looked at you when you came out of surgery.”
Your chest tightened as a wave of emotions flooded you. “He really stayed for me?”
April grinned. “He might have claimed there to be paperwork at first. And then that he wanted to look after his brother. But Will went home hours ago and guess who spend the whole time of your surgery pacing the waiting room.”
April winked at you. “I’m going to search for Ethan now. I wanted to wait for you to wake up before leaving.”
Warmth filled you and you had to blink away the tears, touched by everyone’s concern for you. But the mention of Ethan’s name had also reminded you that you hadn’t been the only one hurt today.
“Is everyone okay? The security guard, did he make it?”
“Oh yeah, we’re all okay.” Before she could say another word someone else appeared in the doorway and April left, a knowing smile on her lips.
“Hey.” You didn’t think you had ever heard Jay speak so softly. It made you want to pull him close and snuggle up beside him, be safe in his arms and forget everything else.
“Hey”, you said, trying to sit up a little, but realizing it was a pointless mission.
You supressed a grin when you noticed the coffee cup in his hand, but Jay had followed your gaze, lifting it up. “That’s the worst coffee I’ve ever had”, he declared, “and we’ve only got a new machine at the precinct last year.”
You chuckled lightly. “We have the good one hidden in the break room. But don’t tell anyone I’ve told you that.”
Jay grinned. “Your secret’s safe with me.” Pulling a chair to your bedside and setting his cup on the nightstand he sat next to you, his eyes flickering over your face.
“I prefer when I am the one taking the bullet.”
He smiled, but it was a sad smile, the stress from the past hours visible on his face. “What can I say? You made it seem so effortless.”
But Jay didn’t seem amused, his eyes heavy. “When I heard about the hostage situation, I hoped you weren’t on shift. I called you, but you didn’t pick up.” He blew out a breath.
“And my brother didn’t either so-” He ran a hand over his face. “It’s why I needed to be the one going in. I needed to know if you were okay.”
“And they let you?” Although you knew they had, you were surprised Jay had been chosen. You didn’t doubt his capability as a cop, but just like you weren’t allowed to be on a personal case you had believed Jay’s involvement would have been a red flag as well.
“Not at first, no. But I was very convincing. And Voight’s not too strict about the rules anyway.”
You didn’t want to imagine the length Jay might have gone to, to get what he wanted. Especially with Voight, who didn’t appreciate anyone speaking up against him or acting out of line.
You stirred a little, your body beginning to ache. “What happened after I passed out?”
Jay’s brows drew together and you could see the graveness in his eyes. “He wouldn’t let you go.” His jaw hardened. “Like I said, negotiations didn’t work with him.”
“Does that mean…-”, you trailed of, your heart heavy. Jay gritted his teeth. “Our backup plan was for me to lead him somewhere the squat team could take the shot.”
“So he’s dead now?” You didn’t know what to feel when Jay nodded his head once. Certainly not regret, not after what he had done, but there was no relief either. Instead you just felt numb, like the turmoil of emotions you had experienced in the past hours had left you completely empty.
“And the mother and her kid?” “They are okay.” Jay seemed as relieved to deliver those news as you felt and for the first you truly allowed yourself to take a big exhale. “As okay as they can be under these circumstances.”
“How could he even walk in with a gun?” You shook your head in disbelief, wishing for answers you know you would never get. “The hospital’s head launched an investigation”, Jay told you and you imagined the stress Dr. Goodwin must be facing even now that it was over.
“That’s good I guess”, you muttered. “Yeah.” But Jay seemed somewhere else with his thoughts and for a moment you feared he would go back to being distanced towards you.
But to your surprise he leaned forward, his hand almost touching yours on the bed. “What happened?”
You scrunched up your nose in confusion. “To you. What happened to you? How did you get shot?”
You took a deep breath, knowing you would have to face that question again once Connor was up. He would be upset, but as much as you regretted your action, wished things had gone differently, you couldn’t say it had been a mistake. Not if you had prevented something worse, like a bullet hitting your brother.
“It all happened so fast.” You closed your eyes, trying to recall the moment. But your memories were hazy, the images blurry, only in fragments.
“I saw Connor coming out of a patient’s room and he- he couldn’t see the gun. Jake would have shot him. He- I- I had to do something.”
When you opened your eyes again you saw Jay’s green eyes staring intensely at you, his brows furrowed deeply.
A shadow covered his face, but it vanished before you could ask about it.
“So you’d rather get yourself killed?” It sounded a little accusing and your face fell, anger filling you. “Don’t you think I know that now? But you would have done the same for Will. I know you would have.”
Jay shifted. “That’s different”, he said, but you tilted your head at him. “I’m too tired for that conversation.”
Jay looked hurt and disappointed, but you didn’t regret your words. You couldn’t take his arguments now, not now when you were still coming to terms with the reality that you had almost lost your life.
“I didn’t know you were so selfless. I mean-”, Jay rubbed the back of his head, “I knew, because of your job and how you treat your patients, but taking a bullet for someone else? I didn’t know you were a hero.”
He was smiling now, trying to loosen the atmosphere, but this words had the opposite effect on you. “I’m not”, you said quietly. “I didn’t even mean to do that. My body just- reacted. That’s not bravery or selflessness.”
This time Jay touched your hand, the unexpected gesture drawing your attention back to him. “It’s always an instinct. It happens too quickly for anyone to make a conscious decision. It can be a reflex and still be brave. Because you didn’t hesitate.”
You hadn’t thought of it like that before and you started at him, your thoughts swirling in your brain as the desire to be close to him clouded your mind once more.
“Does it ever get easier?” You blinked, a little scared to be so vulnerable in front of him. “On tv they are fine after that. They are so cool about it. But what if I’m not fine? What if that was probably the worst thing that ever happened to me and I’m so scared?”
You bit your lip, forcing back the tears. But the truth was you weren’t ready to die yet. And coming so close to death had left its marks on you. You could feel it everywhere, as you gazed around the room, took in all the sensations you could feel, looked at Jay beside you. It was all so much.
“Hey.” Jay squeezed your hand. “That’s acting. It’s fake. You almost died. You’re not supposed to be fine right now.”
A tear escaped your eye and you wiped at it, trying not to be furious at yourself for losing your composure in front of Jay. “I don’t know how you do it. Getting shot at and still running towards danger and not away.”
Jay seemed sheepish out of a sudden, no hint of his usual confidence and wit. “It’s my job. Just like I could never do what you do.” You felt yourself smile a little, his recognition making you feel a little less small in the hospital bed. “And sometimes there are- things that happen on this job that you don’t just get over. We all have things we’re dealing with. Even I.”
Now you squeezed his hand, trying to show him you were there if he ever needed to talk to someone. Jay looked at you with gratitude in his eyes. He understood, even without words.
Silence settled in, but it didn’t feel uncomfortable. There came no pressure to come up with something to say, no need to say anything at all and you could see it was the same for Jay, his thoughts drifting.
“So Connor huh?”
You hadn’t expected the question, drawing your brows together. “What?”
Jay licked his lips, inhaling. “I saw you two together. And then today-”, he trailed off, gazing to the side as he collected himself.
“I don’t know what you saw-”, you began, but Jay raised a hand. “Don’t deny it. I’m not blind. It’s obvious how much you care for each other.”
You started at him, rendered speechless as you tried to imagine what he could have seen. But it didn’t matter, because Jay was- “You’re jealous!”
He twisted in his chair, pulling his hand away. “I’m not jealous”, he said, but you shook your head, grinning. “Yes, you are.”
Annoyance flashed over his face. “I just don’t like to be played with.” Your smile faded a little, but the relief you felt only grew as your slowly began to piece it all together.
“That’s why you acted so cold towards me out of a sudden. You saw me and Connor and you thought-” You almost let out a laugh, only suppressing it as you took in Jay’s unamused expression.
“Well detective Halstead, Connor is my brother.”
You watched with delight how his face turned into confusion, surprise and then hope. “He’s your brother”, he repeated in disbelief and you nodded. “I told you I came to Chicago, because I have family here.”
Jay let out a groan, the previous tension melting from his body as your words sank in. “But Will-”, he paused, clearly rethinking something his brother had said to him, “that bastard. When I saw you together I asked him about you and he warned me not to try anything, because of Connor. He never thought to mention once that he’s your brother.”
“You asked Will about me?”
Jay narrowed his eyes playfully. “That’s what you’re concerned about?”
You let out a laugh. “Not concerned, no. I just- you asked your brother about me.”
Jay raised his brow. “Why is that so hard to believe? I mean, you asked him about me too.”
Your face flushed. “I did not!”
“Yes, you did!” Jay chuckled, clearly enjoying your embarrassment. “Will told me about it. It’s why he got so suspicious so fast when I brought you up.”
“And then he mentioned Connor and you figured-” “he said that if I tried anything with you I would have to deal with Connor Rhodes. And it’s not like you two have the same last name.”
“Different moms”, you explained and he sighed. “I should have just talked to you, but I got so mad and then I heard you two talk and I just- reacted.”
“You should have”, you agreed, “but I should have been more open with you too.”
“So, let’s try again?”
His voice sounded so soft when he said it you felt yourself melt under the covers. “If you’re ready to deal with Connor Rhodes”, you pointed out playfully and Jay shrugged, his natural confidence back.
“After I helped save your life I’m pretty sure I’m well in with him. Which reminds me, you owe me three times now.”
You rolled your eyes, feeling the tiredness return to your body. Soon enough you would be drifting off again. “It’s twice, considering you cancelled our first date.”
Jay grinned. “Fair enough. But I’m taking you out once you’re out of here.”
You smiled. “I’m counting on it.”

Jay Halstead x daughter
Heyyy this is my first time in a while writing a story and I feel like my writing isn’t as good as it used to be, that’s also why this one shot is so short <3
Words: 580
Warnings: not proof read, mentions of blood and hospitalization
Summary: Jay’s daughter has her first period and is a bit unsure of how to handle it, so he calls his brother Will for help.
Tumblr media
Raising a teenage daughter on your own wasn't always easy and Jay Halstead knew that better than anyone, cuz he had a 14 year old daughter named Emily. Despite all the ups and downs and sometimes quite heavy fights and disagreements, hear and Jay were close and Emily was also close to her uncle Will and few others from both Firehouse 51, Intelligence and Med.
It was an early morning in Chicago when Emily woke because of some stomach cramps. She rolled up on her side and curled into fetal position and just laid like that for a minutes until her dad came in to wake her up before he left for work. But concern spreader over Jay's face as he saw the distressed state his daughter was in, he gently approached her and sat down in the edge of her bed pulling some of her out of her face behind her ear as he caressed her arm lightly.
"What's wrong pumpkin?" He asked in a gentle tone as Emily could barely move due to the pain in her stomach who kept intensifying.
"It's my stomach. It really hurts. Can we call uncle Will?" Emily asked her brother curling up even more as Jay felt her forehead which was burning up a bit.
"Oh sweetie, you're burning up. Let's get you checked up" Jay said as he pulled the covers of Emily to carry her down to his truck when he saw the blood on the bed as he started panicking and took out his phone to call Will.
"Hey, what's up?"
"Will, it's Emily. She woke up with severe stomach pain and when I removed her covers there was a lot of blood on the sheets and she can barely move. She's just laying in her all curled up, I'm bringing her in"
"Okay, based on your description it sounds like experience her first period. I'll be ready for you when you get here"
"Okay thank you Will"
Jay said as he hung up the phone and went back over to his daughter as he gently he shamed her arm but she didn't react to it, he tried again a little harder this time as she slowly opened her eyes and immediately felt the pain again as Jay gently picked her up trying to not move her too much as he carried her down to his truck and got her buckled up as he wrapped her in her favorite blanket calling Hailey while driving off towards Med telling her he wouldn't be in today.
Arriving at Med Jay picked up Emily who was still wrapped in the blanket as she clung to her dad when Will came over with a gurney as Jay placed his daughter on it but she refused to let go of him.
“Come on, Ems. You gotta let go so Will can take a look at you just like you asked for earlier” Jay said in a calm tone as Emily loosened her grip on Jay and Will wheeled her into a treatment room.
“Emily” Will said calmly getting the attention of his niece as she was struggling to keep her eyes open.
“I’m gonna give you some pain relievers and April is gonna come in and give you some fluid. So now I suggest you get some rest princess and I’ll be back to check on later” Will said kissing the top of his nieces head as he went out and closed the door

~
There’s no Halstead family dinner that’s uneventful and that includes tonight. Everyone’s here at dad’s home for our weekly dinner. Will was the one who insisted on having dinners like this to spend time together after dad’s narrow escape from death in the apartment fire (and to watch dad’s diet once in a while, not that Will would admit that).
Dad’s seated at one end of the table and Will at the other end while Jay and Hailey sat at one side of the table and Alina and I sat at the other side of the table. Alina is my niece, Jay’s and Hailey’s daughter, who’s turning 8 years old in a few months.
Our plates were all loaded up with food that Will and I cooked since we’re in-charge of dinner tonight.
“The mashed potatoes are so good! I’m guessing Evie cooked it?” Jay said, in between mouthfuls of mashed potatoes. I laughed, “That’s right, big brother, and it’s mom’s recipe so can’t go wrong.”
There’s a pause of silence after I mentioned mom but that’s normal, we all miss her. Trying to cheer the moment, Hailey complimented the pasta that everybody knew Will made because it was his go-to dish to cook (and his most famous in the family). Dinner resumed and everyone made small talks with each other.
“I want to eat bread with nutella,” whined Alina and I glanced over to see that her dinner was already half-eaten. “Go and take the bread and nutella from the kitchen,” I instructed and Alina smiled cheerfully, skipping to the kitchen and back to the dining table with said items.
I helped Alina to spread the nutella on the bread and continued eating my dinner. Not even 5 minutes later, Alina called out to me, “I want more,” so I said, “You can do it yourself, Alina”. I pushed the bread and nutella to her. I was about to continue eating when dad voiced out, “Why can’t you just do it for her? She wants to eat it.”
Before I could even answer, he continued, “Sometimes, I think that you don’t like Alina. The way you treat her at times is just uncalled for.” I looked at dad, was he being serious? Was he really going to talk about this during dinner? Granted I’m not the kind of aunt who’s lovey dovey with their niece but that doesn’t mean I don’t love her. I’m rough with her because she’s like my younger sister who can tolerate and even return that treatment to me. It was like your typical sister siblings behaviour. Regardless, it was a mutual agreement that we don’t upset each other while eating and dad being dad, went straight to break it.
“Dad, Evie’s in the middle of eating, she hasn’t eaten since lunch and was busy the whole evening, besides, Alina’s old enough to spread the nutella on her own.” I heard Will saying. I felt myself shut down, which usually happens when I’m upset.
“Yeah dad, Alina can do it herself, don’t be mad,” Hailey started before turning to me and apologised, “Sorry Evie”. I shook my head and smiled (more like grimaced) at her, whispering a short “it’s okay”. Then, before Alina could reach the bread, I took it and made one for her. My eyes got teary and I knew if I talked I’d cry so I whispered to her, asking if she wanted more. Alina nodded so I made another piece for her.
I went silent the entire dinner. Having lost appetite after what happened, I ate slowly and ended up picking half of what’s left on my plate. I felt Will nudging my leg from under the table and I looked up to see the concern in his eyes. I smiled and continued picking at my food.
One by one, everybody finished their dinner and I carried my own plate together with what’s left on the dining table to the kitchen. Tonight, it was also mine and Will’s turn to clear the dishes and clean the kitchen. So while the two of us were in the kitchen, the rest were in the living room watching tv.
“I’m sorry about dad. He shouldn’t have said that, especially when we’re eating.” Will said, starting what he hoped to be a conversation that I honestly was not in the mood for. I shrugged and replied, “Whatever, not the first time and i’m sure it’s not gonna be the last. Let’s just clear all these so we can go home.” My tone giving Will no room to retort or continue the conversation. So we cleaned in silence and soon dad’s kitchen was back to its original state, clean and tidy.
‘Hey dad, I’m gonna go home first. See ya around,” I didn’t bother to wait for any replies before heading out the front door.
“Evie!” I heard Jay called out and stopped. I felt Jay approaching before he entered my line of sight. “I want to apologise for dinner, about Alina and Dad. I know you love my daughter, no doubt about that. It’s not fair for dad to say that to you, after what you’ve done for Alina ever since she was a baby. I’m not excusing him but it’s not like you don’t know him, right. Please don’t let this be our last family dinner.” Jay said.
I scoffed because yeah, I know what dad is like, but I thought he could’ve at least spared my dignity over dinner. “Don’t worry big brother, I’m not gonna disappear just because of tonight. I’ve faced worst than this, and I’m sorry too about Alina, I could’ve just prepared more than one piece of bread and no drama would occur. It's my fault too.”
Jay laughed and shook his head, “Don’t blame yourself, we’re Halstead, what’s life without drama,” he paused, then continued, “Okay, not gonna keep you here any longer than you’d want, so see ya around kiddo, and wait for Will, you live with him,” Jay ruffled my hair and went back in. Seconds after, Will was rushing out of the house.
“You’re so impatient, lil sis, left me high and dry in there to explain to dad why we’re rushing back home,” I heard Will and rolled my eyes. As Will turned the car engine on, he looked at me and said, “Dad said he’s sorry for what he said just now,”
I nodded. I looked at the house dad stayed and thought about the people inside and knew that I wouldn’t change this family for anything, even with the baggage it comes with.
“Okay.”

It doesn't follow the same timeline and characters will follow different paths.

“Hey, man, it’s Ed. Sorry for the early call, just wanted to check in. I know you had your hands full getting Bex settled back in at home last night and you couldn’t make it out to the meeting, but we haven’t had a chance to talk really since everything, well…since everything. I know it’s been rough and you’re focused on Bex—and rightfully so, I get it. I just—listen, don’t forget yourself in all of this. It’s a lot to be dealing with and me and Chuck and everybody, we’re here for you, okay, Mouse? If you need to talk or have a break or whatever…we’re here…Okay. That’s all I got. Talk to you soon, bud. Count on it.”

Mouse
“Let’s negotiate, shall we?”
Mouse could’ve almost bought Bex’s cocky offer if she wasn’t currently relying on the wall to keep herself upright. And the fact that she was turning an alarming shade of gray just from trying to walk to the elevator.
This was not going to end well.
Jay, like he’d heard Mouse’s thought and accepted it as a personal challenge, went on the offense as he shouldered past to get to Bex. “Negotiate? No, uh-uh,” he said, thrusting a hand out towards her. “Gimme your keys and we’re getting you back inside to rest.”
“Jay—”
“Quit arguing. You look like you’re about to pass out.”
“Will you please just listen to me for one second,” Bex yelled, pressing a hand to her forehead as she closed her eyes. She took a shaky breath before opening them again. “I can’t stay here knowing that Will’s having a hard time and that Emery is—that they’re waking her up soon.”
Jay sighed. “You going there won’t help—”
“Stop! I know! Okay? I know I can’t actually do anything for Will and that Connor has him covered, but Emery—” Bex’s eyes filled with tears and Mouse found himself moving before he had a chance to second guess himself.
He ducked around Jay and stepped into Bex’s space, slowly, giving her a chance to wave him off. Instead, she let out a soft noise and swayed toward him, dropping her forehead to his chest.
Mouse carefully brought his arms up around her and she mumbled something. “Say that again?” he asked quietly.
“I need to be there.” Bex turned her head so they could hear her and whatever her face was doing had Jay’s falling. “What if it was one of you? Wouldn’t you want to be there? So that when they woke up, they’d know that they’re safe?”
Jay met his eyes over Bex’s head and Mouse knew they were both thinking of the same moment.
Of Jay on a cot in a tent in the middle of nowhere and Mouse pushing through medics so he could be by his side. He would have fought through anyone to be there.
Knew in his bones Jay would have done the same.
Jay cursed softly under his breath, shoulders dropping as he dragged a hand over his face. They waited as he fought whatever internal battle he had to get through before he shook his head and shrugged. “None of us can go anywhere without shoes and actual clothes.” He made a ‘gimme’ gesture at Bex’s bag. “Keys.”
She handed it over wordlessly and he dug through until he found them, moving to open the front door. “We’re gonna get in so much shit for this,” he grumbled. “No, Kol, back up. You’re in trouble too, mister. Chris is gonna ground every single friggin’ one of us.”
Mouse and Bex followed him into the apartment as he kept muttering to himself, heading back toward the bathroom. “No one’s allowed to try and escape again while I’m in here,” he called out before closing the door.
“Bossy,” Mouse mouthed at Bex, hoping it would make her smile. She granted him a small one before it faded away into a frown.
“I’m being stupid, aren’t I?” Bex looked up at him with wide, wet eyes. “I’m sor—”
“Hey, no, don’t do that,” Mouse said as he pulled her into another gentle hug. “You’re not being stupid—you were right. I’d be doing the exact same thing if I was in your shoes. Or socks I should say.” She shook with a muffled laugh and he counted that as a win. “Yeah, maybe trying to sneak out was not one of your better plans, but I get it, Bex. I do.”
He let her go and tugged on one of the strings of his hoodie hanging over her shoulders. “This your special escapee outfit?”
“It’s cozy,” she sniffed at him, mouth twitching up at the corners. “And it matches my socks.”
“In that case, you should probably keep it.”
That got him a real, true Bex smile. “I don’t remember offering to give it back.”
“What is this?” Jay came hustling out of the bathroom, fully dressed finally. “Still no shoes? You just standing out here making heart eyes at each other?” He huffed as he hopped around pulling on his own shoes. “Kol, I thought you were supposed to be in charge?”
Kol popped up from where he’d been lounging on the couch and let out a little howl. Jay held up his hands in apology. “You’re right, I’m sorry,” he said. “It’s more than a one-dog job.”
“You’re so ridiculous,” Bex said, laughing a bit as she stepped away from Mouse. “I’m getting them—oh—” Her eyelids fluttered as she tilted dangerously to the side.
“Whoa!” Jay leapt into action beside him. They both steadied her from either side and carefully maneuvered her over to sit on the couch, Kol whining as he wiggled back to make room. “I was just joking,” Jay said softly as he crouched down in front of her. “There’s no rush. We’ve got plenty of time.”
“No, I’m good, I’m fine.” Bex listed again as she tried to get up. “We can go right now.”
“Let’s take a minute anyway,” Mouse said. At this rate, they’d be taking her to the hospital to be readmitted. “I think maybe we need to get some more food and fluids into you?”
Bex grimaced, sinking back into the couch. “I would really like to not yak today.”
Mouse sent Jay a look that he hoped said ‘I’m here to help and be supportive and do what I can, but also, I’m the boyfriend and I refuse to be bad cop so that’s all you, dude.’
And then Jay sent him a look that clearly said ‘Fuck you, dude, but fine, whatever.’
Excellent communication. Go team.
Jay got to his feet with a groan, crossing his arms as he stared Bex down. “You’re going to have something else to eat, then another rest, and then we’ll go.” He held up a finger before she could open her mouth. “I already checked in with Connor and Kira while I was getting dressed. Will’s getting patched up again, but he’s going to be absolutely fine. They said this kind of thing happens and they caught it early so no one is worried. And Kira said the doctors don’t expect Emery to start waking up properly for at least another few hours. At least.”
He lowered his hand, the stern lines in his face softening. “I’m saying we’ve got time for you to take care of yourself, Bex,” he said. “Take a few hours so you can handle a proper visit, okay?”
“…fine,” Bex sighed.
“Awesome, I’ll get some of that soup reheated,” Jay said before turning to Kol. “Keep her on the couch, bud.”
Kol barked once before snuggling into Bex’s side.
“Ha ha, you’re all hilarious.” Bex immediately started giving Kol pets, even as she rolled her eyes.
“Okay, Jay’s got soup,” Mouse said, pressing a kiss to Bex’s head before straightening up. “I’ll get drinks and maybe some more toast.” He was good at toast.
Jay punched his arm on the way to the kitchen.
“Ah, hey, what was that for?”
“You know exactly what that was for.”
Fair.
***
Bex
Bex had almost forgotten how much of a Mama Chicken Jay could be. Like, rivaling Chris levels. Once she got over being annoyed, she’d probably be impressed.
After the food and fluids and the intense efforts at not puking and then the pretending to be resting, it was late afternoon by the time they finally made it to Med. According to Connor, Will was still sleeping so they went to Emery’s floor first.
Kira came out as soon as she saw them in the hall, a wide smile on her face. “Bex,” she whispered as she wrapped her up in a hug. “You’re here!” The smile dropped as she pulled away, looking between her and Mouse and Jay. “Why are you here? You’re supposed to be resting. And healing. And not rambling around the hospital.”
She shot a pointed look at Mouse and Jay who both held their hands up.
“Listen,” Jay began and Bex stepped in.
“I made them bring me,” she said, reaching out to grab Kira’s hand. “I had to—I needed to be here.” Bex took a deep breath. “How’s she doing?”
“Really well,” Kira said, squeezing her hand back. “Her stats keep improving and she’s already opened her eyes a couple of times. Had a bit of water. She falls back asleep like, immediately, so you haven’t missed much, but…it’s good, Bex. She’s good.”
And oh—that—
That had Bex choking back a sob as she peered over Kira’s shoulder into the room. “That’s really—”
“Good?” Kira offered with an equally watery grin.
“Yeah,” Bex nodded. “Can I—is it okay if I sit with her?”
“Why are you even asking? Come on.” Kira ushered her inside and got her set up in the chair beside Emery’s bed before leaving the room. She moved to sit in the lounge with Mouse and Jay—close enough to be there if they were needed, but still giving her some privacy.
Bex shuffled forward a bit in her chair and reached out to take Emery’s hand. “Hey,” she whispered. “It’s me again. I know—I can’t get enough of this place, right?”
The monitors beeped quietly around them. Bex focused on the rise and fall of Emery’s chest and the soft hiss of air as she breathed under the mask.
There was a hint of colour coming back into her cheeks.
That was good.
All of this is good, Bex reminded herself. It means she’s still alive. She’s healing.
“I’ve been back at the apartment,” she said, watching Emery’s face for any kind of movement. “Chris wanted me to go home to their place, but, uh—I’m—I’m at our place and Jay and Mouse are staying with me. They made this really…sort of unidentifiable, but also kind of delicious soup.” Bex laughed quietly. “I should freeze some so you can try it.”
Emery’s fingers twitched in hers.
“Em?” Bex’s breath caught in her throat. “Hey, I’m here. It’s Bex. I’m right here. Open your eyes, Emery. It’s okay.”
A soft groan made its way through the mask as Emery slowly blinked her eyes to halfway open. “Be—”
“Yes, hi, it’s me. It’s Bex.” She struggled her way out of the chair, ignoring the ripples of pain in her side so she could lean over Emery and be in her line of sight. “I’m right here, Emery.”
Emery reached up, patting at Bex’s cast. “You’re…hurt,” she whispered.
“Only a little,” Bex said. The tears filling her eyes started to spill over as pure relief flowed through her. Emery was awake. She was talking. She was here.
“Bex.” Emery gripped her hand, cheeks wet with her own tears. “Bex. Sorr—”
“Don’t you dare,” Bex said fiercely, leaning in close. “Don’t you dare apologize to me, Emery Hughes or I will—I don’t know, but it’ll be drastic. This is not your fault. It’s his and we’re not giving him any space in here right now, okay? Because we are here. We made it. We’re alive and we’re going to be okay. That’s what matters. Do you hear me?”
Emery stared up at her, a whole battle clearly raging in her own head, but it wasn’t time for that. Not yet.
“We’re here,” Bex repeated, willing the words into Emery’s heart. “We’re alive. And we’re gonna be okay.”
“Okay,” Emery finally whispered.
“Exactly.” Bex smiled, moving back carefully to sit down again, but still close.
“Wait.” Emery frowned and Bex froze.
“What’s wrong? Should I get a nurse?”
“Mouse,” Emery said, somehow managing to raise an eyebrow through her still mostly out of it state. “…moved in?”
“That’s the part you heard?” Bex groaned out a laugh.
“Details.” Emery whispered.
“Yeah, yeah,” Bex said, squeezing Emery’s hand gently. “I’ll tell you the whole not-actually exciting story when you wake up.”
Because Bex would still be there.
She didn’t think she could leave until it really sunk in.
Emery was here. She was alive.
And she was going to be okay.
“Promise?” Emery mumbled, already mostly back asleep.
“Yeah, Em,” Bex said. “I promise.”

Jay
Jay sat beside Mouse in the lounge, keeping a clear view of Bex sitting with Emery in the ICU. He still wasn’t sure if bringing her here was the best idea. Bex looked like a light breeze could knock her over and Emery probably wasn’t even going to remember this visit.
But Bex would.
And if it helped her settle and let her focus more on her own recovery, then wasn’t that a good thing?
That was the argument he was going to offer Chris anyway when he inevitably found out about this and tore a strip off of him. In the very kind and yet gut-wrenching way that only Chris seemed to manage.
Mouse elbowed him suddenly and Jay looked up to see Dr. Abrams striding toward them.
Oh.
Crap.
“Gentlemen,” Dr. Abrams said, arms folded as he stared down at them in a way that almost had Jay shrinking back into his seat. “I’m only going to ask this question once. Why do I see Ms. Herrmann sitting in the ICU when she is supposed to be at home? Resting. Which was doctor’s orders, I believe.”
Jay shot a look at Mouse who was giving him that same ‘not it’ look from the living room which was even less helpful now than it was then.
“Okay, um,” Jay began. “I can explain…”
“Oh, good,” Chris said, popping up out of freaking nowhere with that very distinct look on his face that Jay had been picturing since Bex tried to make a break for it and it was exactly as awful as he thought it would be. “Because, I gotta say, Jay, I would also love to hear how this happened.”
“First of all,” Jay said, stalling, trying to figure out where to start, maybe panicking a little bit. “It’s also Mouse’s fault.”
“Dude.”

Hey, can I request a Connor Rhodesxteen!daughter!reader where she gets quite sick with the flu or something and he looks after her?
Flu
Connor Rhodes x Daughter!Reader
Summary: You’re sick with the flu but your dad is there to take care of you.
———
“Are you feeling okay, honey?” Connor asked as he took the thermometer out of your mouth, reading 39.3 Celsius. Your temperature was really quite high.
You shook your head and groaned, taking the glass filled with water and the medicine off your bedside table. “My head… and my throat, it hurts. I’m all achy Dad.”
Connor nodded and watched you take the medicine. “I know, I know. You’ve got the flu, my love, we just have to wait it out.
You groaned and hid your face in the blankets. “I don’t like this. The flu was going around at school but I didn’t think I’d actually get it!”
Your dad just sat by your bed and rubbed your back slowly, he couldn’t do much but comfort you. “I thought you wouldn’t get it either, considering how much of a germaphobe you are.”
You turned your face away from the blankets to peer up at him. “I am not a germaphobe, I just like washing my hands which I think we should all be doing.”
Connor rolled his eyes and chuckled. “Alright, whatever you say.” You were definitely a germaphobe.
———
Throughout the day Connor kept an eye on your temperature, tried to get you to eat, made sure you were sleeping properly and took medicine.
You weren’t that interested in lunch or dinner, Connor only managed to get you to eat half a piece of toast and some chicken soup. You were miserable and just wanted the sickness to be over.
You were asleep next to your dad in his bed that night, your argument being his bed was more comfortable than your own. He knew you just wanted to be next to him which he didn’t have a problem with.
Connor checked your temperature again, noticing it hadn’t broken and instead had just risen. He gently stroked your face and whispered your name. “Y/N, sweetheart, you need to wake up, my love.”
You groaned tiredly, trying to ignore him at first so you could go back to sleep, though his efforts to get you up were persistent. You lifted your head and rubbed your eyes.
Connor passed you a glass of water and some medicine. “I know it’s late, I’m sorry. You have to take these though, alright?”
You sighed and took the medicine, finishing off the glass of water. You laid back down, pulling the blankets over your shoulders and closing your eyes. You made sure to stay close to Connor as you left, not wanting to part too far from him.
For the rest of the night, Connor slept lightly, making sure to wake up and check your temperature now and again. He would always be there for you no matter what.

One Way or Another
Pairing: Ethan Choi x Reader
Summary: You work in the same ER as Ethan everyday and you flirt as often as you can but he doesn’t seem to get the picture until you enlist the help of a friend
Warnings: fluff! Sneaky plans, jealously, talks about hospital things
Notes: another anon request from my distraction sleepover! Ethan doesn’t get enough love 😩
Tumblr media
“There’s my favorite surgeon.” Ethan grins at you as you exit the elevator, files in hand.
“What do you want? You always use that line after you page me at the start of the shift.” You hum and join him at the nurses station.
“How very dare you.” He has a big smile on his face, “But I do need to to consult on this with me.”
You roll your eyes but you can’t help the smile twitching on your lips. He’s really pretty and his smile is infectious. You’ve had a big crush on Ethan for awhile now and you guys flirted constantly but nothing had come of it.
Last time you had gone out with your coworkers you had had a little too much to drink and Ethan wasn’t there so you had rambled. And rambled. And rambled about the fact that Ethan was so oblivious.
And Will had listened, Will had humored you. He humored you even when you asked him to take part in your plan.
A plan you had kind of forgotten about until you finished your consult and were talking with Ethan about his day.
“Hey y/n! You got any plans tonight?” Will slides up behind you unnecessarily close, you can feel his breath on your ear.
“Hey Will, uhhh no, I don’t believe I do.” You smile as you look over your shoulder, your noses almost brushing.
“You should come out with me tonight then, I’ve got tickets for this great band.” He grins.
“Ya, sounds amazing, I’d love to!“ You smile.
“Great! I’ll meet you outside after our shift.” Will smiles right back and the two of you just stare at each other and smile. Ethan clears his throat and Will winks at you, “See you later, y/n, Ethan.”
You and Ethan are quiet for a moment and he clears his throat again, “Soooo, you and Halstead?”
“Me and Halstead? No, just friends.” You smile softly, trying to be ambiguous as possible, “I mean, he’s a handsome guy and he’s wonderful but I don’t know.”
“Oh….ok.” Ethan nods his head, “Why don’t you know? If you don’t mind me asking.”
You start walking and Ethan follows behind you as you press the button for the elevator, “No I don’t mind at all……I’m interested in someone else.”
Ethan freezes as the elevator dings as it gets closer, “Does Halstead know that?”
You step into the elevator and smile at Ethan as the doors close, “He does.”
Ethan can’t stop thinking about that conversation all day. With every patient he sees, every gash he stitches, every easy diagnose, every impossible one, he’s thinking about that conversation.
He can’t understand why you would tell him, why you would say it like that, did it mean something or nothing at all?
He’s still thinking about it at the end of shift as he slowly packs up his things. He spaces out so far that he doesn’t notice Will walk into the room until he claps him on the back and hands him a slip of paper.
Ethan looks up startled, “What’s this?”
“The name and address of the restaurant with the band tonight, reservation is under your last name.” Will smiles and pats Ethan’s back as he starts to get changed.
“But y/n….”
Ethan can’t even finish the sentence before Will rolls his eyes, “Would prefer to be going with you then me.”
Ethan grins down at the paper and nods, “Thanks man.”
Will grins to himself as he watches Ethan race to get changed and runs out of the room. Will manages to see the two of you holding hands as you walk to Ethan’s car.
“Have fun on your date you two.” He smirks, waving at you guys.
You raise the hand that intertwined with Ethan’s with a smile on your face, “Oh we will!”

No More Night Shifts
Working retail during the Christmas time was one of the most stressful things anyone can do. From the hustle and bustle of living in the city, to getting to work early and leaving late at night, to the freezing weather of the Chicago winter. It took a lunatic to agree to pull double shifts.
That crazy person just so happened to be (Y/N).
Her boss had asked her to fill in for a colleague that had come down with a very bad cold and could not make it in for her night shift. In the spur of the moment, she had said yes. But as she walked, the cold wind nipping at her skin, her feet sliding on the icy pavement, she contemplated returning home.
(Y/N) hated working the night shift at the store she worked in. Customers were rude, management always expected her to stay overtime without pay, and for some reason, she always got into some sort of accident when she was going back home.
And just as she had thought, the shift was a nightmare. She filled up her bad customer bingo. Which went something like this:
Mister ‘It doesn’t scan so I guess it’s free.”
Miss ‘My coupon is expired, but I’m gonna try to use it.”
The ‘You don’t mind using your employee for me, right?’ person.
The family excursion troop.
The no receipts returners.
And the people that think you’re a personal shopper.
By the time three in the morning rolled around, (Y/N) wanted nothing more than to collapse on the floor. Her whole body was sore and her eyes were tired from sleep. She cursed past her for agreeing to pick up that night shift.  She thought of being on her couch, a hot mug of tea in her hands, and bundled up with her thickest blanket with her boyfriend. She would be warm and comfortable, instead of absolutely miserable and cold.
But her daydreaming took a turn for the worst.
As she neared the bus stop, she didn’t notice the big puddle of sludge that had formed on the sidewalk. She slid on the pavement and her body collided with the frozen ground. One second she was walking and the other she was in the hospital.
***
In the Emergency Department of Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, doctors and nurses were up to their necks with patients. With the weather going down, many people succumbed to the illnesses the cold temperatures brought. Cases of colds, flu, and pneumonia trickled in and out of the hospital at a fast pace. The ED was never empty.
“How’re we doing, Maggie?” Will Halstead asked the charge nurse of the department.
“Well, we keep filling beds as soon as one empties,” she sighed. “It looks like it’s gonna be a very long winter season. Although it looks like tonight might be slowing down. You going home yet?”
“I was just getting ready to do so,” he smiled tiredly. But the two were interrupted when the brick chirped. The doctor let out an exasperated sigh, knowing that his plans to finally lay down were just trampled. “Let me have it.”
“Incoming,” Maggie announced. “Trauma 1.”
“Talk to me,” Will told the paramedic as they walked in. That was before he took a good look at the patient.  “What happened?”
“Unconscious female, visible ankle fracture. Witness said she slid on ice and fell to the ground. She’s been in an out of consciousness. We have stabilized the right ankle with a splint and there is no sign of a spinal injury. The ID in her bag says her name is (Y/N) (Y/LN).”
“I know,” he breathed. “She’s my girlfriend.”
They all entered the room, other staff following suit. Tension built into the space as everyone noticed who it was. If they didn’t know (Y/N) personally, they knew of her and her involvement with the ED’s attending physician.
“Alright everyone, on my count,” he told the paramedics and nurses that would help transfer the woman from the gurney onto the hospital bed. “One, two, three.”
They all took hold of (Y/N)’s body, careful not to disrupt her ankle or any other injury she might’ve had. Behind them, Nurse Doris rolled in the X-Ray machine, handing Will and April a lead apron before she instructed the rest of the staff to exit the room, as well as the paramedics.
“So, it looks like it’s a bimalleolar fracture,” the doctor announced as the image came up on the screen. “Thankfully, the ankle is not dislocated so immobilizing it with a cast should do the trick.”
“Alright, I’ll get the kit.”
“Okay, let’s also get a full blood workup, and a head CT,” Will told April. “Now, pupillary response is good. Heartbeat is steady. She’s breathing on her own which is a good sign. Let’s start an IV drip with 2.5 mg of morphine…”
“Wait, Will, look,” she said. “She’s waking up.”
(Y/N)’s eyes started fluttering open, the bright lights worsening the headache she already had. Her whole body felt mangled and sore, and she was sure it was not from the long day at work.
“Hey, welcome back,” a voice said. “Can you tell us your name and where you are?”
“(Y/N) (Y/L/N) and I’m in a hospital because god doesn’t exist.”
When she finally opened her eyes, she suddenly did not mind that she was in the hospital. Before her, she was met with a handsome red-haired doctor. He smiled at her and she could feel butterflies forming in her stomach.
But her pleasantly surprised feelings quickly shifted to ones of embarrassment, when she noticed who it was.
“He-ey, doctor,” she stammered. “Funny running into you here.”
“Good to see your sense of humor wasn’t impaired,” he chuckled brightly. “Now, do you remember what happened?”
“I was walking to the bus stop to go back home when I slipped on a puddle of sludgy ice and now I’m here.”
“Okay. And other than your ankle and your head, does anything else hurt?”
“My pride,” she grumbled. “I told you, the night shift is cursed.”
“It sounds to me that you were distracted and you fell,” he laughed. “I don’t think there is any curse.”
“Yet you all believe people turn crazy because of the full moon.”
“Well, your memory seems to be okay. So, I’m gonna leave you with April so she can get your bloodwork to the lab,” Will told (Y/N), a kind smile on his face. His initial panic subsided when she woke up and recognized who they both were.
“Can you stay?” (Y/N) pleaded softly.
“I promise to be gentle,” April chuckled. If there was one thing she knew about her friend it was how desperately afraid of needles she was. “I’ll draw your blood really quickly and then I’ll sneak in the IV. How does that sound?”
“Like you’re gonna still gonna stick me with needles.”
“At least the pain in your ankle is gonna stop,” Will offered. But (Y/N)’s fear was still evident on her face. “Alright, just focus on me, babe. It’ll be over before you know it.”
“Just don’t let go of my hand.”
April quickly got to work as Will distracted (Y/N) with mindless chatter of what they would do during Christmas – spend the day in pjs, drink hot chocolate in front of the fire, and exchange gifts even though they told each other not to get presents. And before she knew it, the IV dripping pain medication into her system has started doing its job.
“There,” April announced, calling the couple’s attention. “We’re all done. I’ll be back soon to take you to the CT scan – for precaution -- and to bring your results. I’ll bring by the kit in a bit.”
“Thanks, April.”
The nurse smiled back at the couple in response, closing the curtains on them as she exited.
“So, what’s the verdict, doc? Am I gonna lose my leg?”
“Nah, just 9 to 12 weeks with a cast. You’ll have to come in a coupled of times to do x-rays, just to make sure the bone’s healing as it should,” Will explained. “But don’t worry, we don’t have to amputate.”
“Well, no late-night shifts for me in a while,” she joked. “Maybe that’s what I needed to break the curse, huh?”
“What?” he laughed. “Slipping on ice and spending your morning in the ED?”
“Hey, at least the doctor is cute,” she said before she placed a kiss on his lips.
“I’m just glad you’re okay, baby. It was pretty scary to see you unconscious on a stretcher like that.”
“Oh, don’t you worry, Halstead. It would take a lot more to bring me down.”
“Alright, (Y/L/N). Settle down,” he smiled at her. Will had been terrified that something worse would have happened, but if a little slip is the worst that could happen, he could live with that. “Take this as a little Christmas gift – you won’t have to work for some time.”
“NO NIGHT SHIFTS!” (Y/N) exclaimed excitedly. “It’s a Christmas miracle!”

Ava Bekker x Female!Reader
Summary: Getting ready for a long day at work
warnings: Fluff
Word count: 400 words
----
Y/n knew that she was going to regret forgetting to take her sleeping tablets, but when she realised she couldn't be bothered to get out of bed, even so, they'd mean she wouldn't be up in time for work in the morning.
So after struggling for hours to get back to sleep, she decided to get up at 5am. It would only be half an hour before she actually had to get up. She had been cuddled into her girlfriend's side, for so long she was starting to get extremely stiff. Gently easing herself out of bed and away from Ava's side, she made her way to the kitchen, grabbing her dressing gown from the back of the bedroom door and wrapping it around her waist.
Y/n rubbed the sleep from her eyes as she started to brew herself a coffee. She cringed at how stupidly loud the machine was as it started to get her coffee ready, she put a second pod in, ready for Ava when she woke up a little later. The view from her apartment was gorgeous. A balcony in the living room had an amazing view of the sunrise which was just starting now. Smiling, Y/n wrapped her dressing gown round herself tighter, shielding herself from the chill as she stepped outside. Clutching her hot coffee mug in both hands and standing at the balcony watching the pink, purple and orange hues fill the sky along with the early morning Chicago traffic.
Sighing out a breath that she felt like she had been holding for a long time Y/n smiled at the sight of it all, bringing her steaming coffee up to her lips; taking a small sip and regretting it, thanks to the heat of the mug. Soon enough the coffee mug was set on a balcony table.
Y/n shivered slightly from the cold as she felt two arms snake around her waist, pulling her back into the other body. "Good morning, baby." a deep purr came from behind her along with slow kisses along her neck which sped up her breathing. "Good morning, to you too" she looked up to meet her lover's steel blue eyes. "Isn't the sunrise just beautiful?" Y/n sighed peacefully to her lover. Ava looked up, "It is quite spectacular."
Y/n looked up at Ava, pushing herself up to meet her lips for a small, yet drawn out kiss before the two turned back to the yellow, orange, pink and purple colours that decorated the early morning sky.

Away from you
Tumblr media
Pairing: jay halstead x reader
Summary: y/n doesn’t know where Jay truly is and she got worried
Warning: angst, slightly smut, cheating,
A/N: i will probably write a part 2, stay tuned!
~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•
You and Jay had been together for three years and everything looked good, at least it was ‘till the end of the march. You didn’t know or understand why he changed his behavior when he was with you, especially since it all happened so quickly and unexpectedly that you just couldn’t understand what happened between you two. From one day, he just started to behave differently, coming home later and telling you that he was just too busy at work, doing some paperwork and getting his things ready for the next shift. He made it looked like he was just trying to impress Voight and for a moment you actually believed him.
You knew how much he wanted to become, one day, sergeant and to be on the lead of his own unit and you just wanted to support him in any ways you could; if he wanted to make a good impression in case of a new sergeant, you wouldn’t have stop him. Actually, it looked like Voight was having some issues lately, from how Jay talked about him after work anyway, and you really trusted him and believed him about his story.
Then, one evening, you decided to go talk with Kim, having some times together and trying to explain to her what you had in mind: Jay’s birthday was closer than you thought and you had to find a good gift for him.
“I need you to help me.” You said to Kim, smiling softly. “Jay’s birthday is in two weeks and i want to surprise him with a two-days holiday. I know that he spends a lot of time at the district doing his paperwork and trying to make a good impression in case of a promotion, but i really need your help. Can you please find a good reason to get him home earlier on Friday’s night?”
Kim was surprised by your statement, not because of the surprise you were preparing for him, but for what you said about him staying at the district till late.
“What do you mean that he spends a lot of time at the district to make a good impression? He always leaves before me, actually he arrives earlier to complete the paperwork he usually leaves at the end of the shift.”
You were confused, you were really confused. What did that mean? If he usually left the district early in the evening, why he came home every night after 11 pm, when you were already sleeping?
“Uhm… he usually doesn’t come home before 11 pm.” You whispered, looking at Kim while your mind raced through all the nights you waited for him to come back home, before falling asleep because of the tiredness of the day at work.
“Y/n, i swear to God that he usually leaves at 7 pm, 8 pm if we’re up to something ‘till late.” Kim said, looking sadly at you, while something you didn’t want to admit passed through her mind.
“But… it doesn’t make sense.” You replied, shaking your head slightly. “What does he do between 7 pm and 11 pm then?”
The girl just shook his head, looking ad you sadly and placing her hand on yours, trying to reassure you in some ways. “Maybe it’s not something you have to worry about, maybe it’s just some stuff he had to do or, maybe, it’s just a bad moment for him. I remember he was like this when he suffered from PTSD.”
You nodded, but it didn’t make sense anyway. You remembered when Jay suffered from PTSD because you were always by his side, you were always there for him and you followed him step after step, trying to help him find his way out of it. It couldn’t be PTSD that time, you would have noticed immediately.
He wasn’t distressed like he was when he suffered from it, he was actually really happy and he was usually calm when he came back home.
It could be PTSD, but what was it then?”
“Sorry Kim, i have to go.” You whispered, looking at your phone and finding out it was just 9:30 pm; you had still plenty of time before he could have been home and you wanted to find out what was happening with your boyfriend, actually with your future husband.
“Don’t worry darling, it’s okay.” Kim whispered, smiling at you. “We’ll see each other soon, okay? Maybe you can come at the district one day and we can talk a little? Also Adam and Kevin missed you, you know. With all the preparations of the wedding, we didn’t see you around in a while.”
“Yeah, when i’m not at work at the hospital, i’m around the city trying some white dresses.” You sighed, wearing your jacket and placing some money on the table, paying for your own drink.
“I can imagine that. Don’t worry, really. I hope to see you again soon.” She smiled softly at you.
“I hope that too. Bye Kim, goodnight.”
You left the bar just ten minutes after and you immediately called the one and only that could have tracked Jay’s phone without a word: Mouse.
When he came back from the army, for the second time, you knew that it would have been difficult for him to start a new life again, especially after the first time. Jay helped him and, after some weeks in which he tried to convince him every single day, Mouse accepted to come back at the intelligence as a tech. It wasn’t an easy decision for him and it was strange at first, but he knew he had no better option and working with his friend was something he missed a lot.
He picked up the phone after the second ring.
“Hi! Look who showed up!” He smiled and laughed. “I was actually asking myself when you would have called me to give me the official invite to your wedding, you know? I would have asked Jay, but he i’m pretty sure is not as much involved in the preparations as you are, so…”
“Mouse, i need your favor.” You told him straight away. “I can’t find Jay and I’m worried. Can you please track his phone and tell where he is? And, can you do that without anyone knowing it?”
It was a strange request, especially since it went from you, but Mouse got it immediately and he started to track Jay’s phone straight away. He was actually scared for his friend, he was scared that Jay got into real trouble, maybe with the ptsd or something liked that, but there was no time for questions. He tracked his phone and he gave her the address after only three minutes.
“Thank you, Mouse. Sorry if i interrupted your evening. I have to go now and, don’t worry, I’ll handle the invite in person, okay?” You said, getting inside the car while looking at the address Mouse gave to you. It could be true, why was he there?
“Don’t worry, no problem at all. I’ll leave you now, i guess you’re busy… just, tell me if anything happened to him, okay?” He replied, making sure that everything was okay, making sure that you would have called him in case of trouble.
“I will, thanks Mouse.”
When he hung up, you started the car and you drove to the location he sent you; why the hell was Jay at his old apartment? Didn’t he sell it?
When you arrived at the location, you parked the car and you got out as soon as you could, going up the stairs and reaching his door just few minutes after. Fortunately, you still knew where he used to hide the key and you went for it, opening the door as silently as you could. The first thing you noticed when you entered was the emptiness of the room: there was nothing there other than some furnishings and still you didn’t understand why Jay was there.
Then, you noticed it.
Then, you noticed them: heels and they weren’t yours.
Your mouth became dry and you stopped breathing properly, trying to find an explanation for what you were seeing. You took some steps forward and your eyes fell on the jeans and t-shirts that were on the floor, all the way up to what it was Jay’s bedroom before he moved out. You took the hallway, starting to hear voices, moans you didn’t want to hear, moans you just wanted to be from your neighbors, even if you knew that they were elderly and it couldn’t have been them. Just at the front of the door, you saw them: panties and Jay’s boxer.
Your brain stopped working, you stopped breathing and your heart almost stopped beating; you just couldn’t understand what was happing, you couldn’t believed it.
You zoned out, like you couldn’t have been there, like you were just in a dream, a bad dream, a really bad one, then you came back to reality when you actually saw and hear them.
“Oh, Jay.” She moaned, begging him. “Please, faster.”
Hailey.
Jay’s partner.
“God, Hails…” Your boyfriend moaned, lowering himself on her to kiss her breast while fucking her. “I… shit… you feel so good around me.”
“Oh, J-Jay!” She moaned louder, unaware of your presence on the frame of the door, where you were watching them, without breathing.
Jay took Hailey’s legs and he put it on his own shoulder, increasing the pace.
“Yes, cum around me, baby. Cum for me, i love you.”
Surprisingly. It wasn’t watching him fucking her that destroyed you: it was his last three words, the same three words he said to you every morning before going to work, the same three words he said to you on the phone when he was to busy at work to come home, even if he was actually heading to his old apartment, when he was able to fuck his partner whenever he wanted to.
You stepped back silently, to broken to face the truth, to heart broken to face him.
You stepped back and you left without saying a word, without make noise; you went back inside your car and only then, when Hailey’s and Jay’s moans were far away from you, you started breathing again.
Tears were streaming down your cheeks from minutes probably, but you couldn’t notice it before and you were to shocked to dry off your tears: you just wanted to add as many distance as you could between you and the man you thought was the love of your life.
You didn’t even went back to your apartment, you couldn’t have handle being again in the house that would have been yours, the house in which you hoped you would have started a family with Jay. You didn’t go back to your apartment to collect all your belongings, you just left.
You left a message to your boss’ office regarding your resignation and you drove away.
Away from Jay.
Away from your apartment.
Away from the life you dreamed of with him.
Away from the love.
Away from the pain.
Away from Chicago.

When we fall | Part 2
Warnings (for all parts): Fluff, angst, description of injuries, probably unaccurate policing/medicine
Summary: You moved to Chicago to start a new life. Working as a doctor alongside your brother Connor you make new friends and although you swore to yourself not to let any man in your life at least for a while, your promises fail when you lock eyes with a handsome stranger in a bar.
Words: 4.5k
Pairing: Jay Halstead x Doctor!Rhodes!reader
A/N: Here's the second part :) I hope you enjoy!
Part 1
Tumblr media
“Who got you smiling like that?”
You looked up from your phone, startled by the voice behind you. It was April, trying to glance over your shoulder to sneak a look at your phone screen. You immediately locked it, slipping it back into your pocket.
“No one”, you blurted out, biting your tongue. “I mean- just…someone.”
“No one or someone?” April wiggled her brows at you, her eyes shining with excitement. “I thought you said you didn’t want to date for a while.”
You let out a sigh. “I don’t”, you agreed, causing her to tilt her head at you in confusion. “But now there’s this guy-” You couldn’t even finish your sentence, interrupted by April’s squeal. “Oh god! Calm down!” You gazed around nervously, relieved to find neither Will nor your brother in sight.
“I don’t even really know him.” You feared if April got too excited over the news she had just gotten out of you, she would share them with Maggie. Probably the whole nursing staff too. And if there was one true thing to be said about hospitals, it was that nurses made the biggest gossips.
“But you like him.” It was a statement rather than a question, but still you thought over her words. April was right. You did like Jay. A lot.
He was funny, witty and sarcastic. Always quick with his remarks. Confident. But not in a macho kind of way, but more so that he knew who he was and what he wanted and that he didn’t fear speaking the truth.
And he was charming, if he wanted to be. A big flirt, but in a way that you could never be sure if he was just teasing you or if he meant what he said.
And he was brave. Courageous. He hadn’t given you many insight into that part of his life yet, but from the hints you had gotten you were fascinated by his drive as a detective.
Not to mention he was handsome. Unfairly so. Especially in that leather jacket you had seen him wear, although just a plain t-shirt was enough to show off his arms and- depending on the colour- bring out his eyes.
“Oh god what am I doing!” You let out a groan as the severity of your situation sank in. You were crushing on Jay Halstead, your colleague’s brother. A man you barely knew except a moment of eye-contact at a bar, a brief encounter at the hospital and a conversation outside said bar.
While the two of you had talked the whole way as he had driven you back to your apartment- your head spinning with the fact that he knew where you lived now- it had been mostly about unimportant things. What kind of sports team he liked, what the best food places in Chicago were, how cold it was supposed to turn at the end of the week.
But it had made you feel relaxed and even interested to get more hints into who this man beside you was. You had even been disappointed when you had recognized your apartment building, the exhaustion you had felt wearing off with him around.
Right before the two of you had parted ways Jay had stopped you, insisting on giving you his number. “In case you need another ride”, he had said with a wink.
That same night you had started texting, when you had thanked him for the ride home and you two had kept the conversation steady ever since. You even knew his break times by heart now, a smile stealing its way on your lips whenever you saw a new message from him.
Was it possible you were developing a crush for this man you barely knew?
“This won’t ever work out- I shouldn’t-” “Hey, take a breath.” April had stepped closer towards you, her brows drawn together in concern. “He makes you happy. It’s obvious. Don’t blow this off, because you’re scared what the future might bring.”
You swallowed, but you followed April’s words and took a deep inhale. “I just-”, you shook your head, the fear of the realization that had just dawned on you making your chest tight, “I can’t get hurt again. I just started a life here and I- I can’t.”
You blew out a breath, closing your eyes for a moment to collect yourself. “I’m not ready to get my heart broken again.”
April looked at you, empathy in her eyes. For a moment she didn’t say anything, the words hanging heavy in the air between you. Then she reached out, her hand covering yours. “No one ever is. But don’t jump to all the worst-case scenarios. What if it’s good? And it’s good now, isn’t it?”
You bit your lip, nodding hesitantly. There was no denying it; texting with Jay had become the highlight of your day.
“Then that’s all that matters now.” You nodded again, a shy smile forming on your lips. “Thank you, April.”
The dark-haired woman smiled at you in return, her eyes filled with a warmth you were sure made her patients feel reassured around her. “Always. But don’t think you can keep your secret long. I’m going to find out who that man is that makes you all lovey-dovey.”
-
“Hey!”
You almost jumped out of your skin, turning your head to see a silhouette pushing of the wall next to the hospital’s doors. You squinted your eyes, trying to determine who it was, waiting for you in the dark.
“Jesus”, you whispered, shaking your head as a relieved chuckle escaped you once the man stepped into the light. “You scared the shit out of me!”
Your heart was racing in your chest and you took a breath to calm it down, the shock slowly vanishing. Jay grinned, his dark clothes doing nothing to elevate him from the darkness.
“Sorry”, he said, stepping further into the light, “I didn’t realize you were zoned out like that.”
“Just thinking”, you muttered, straightening a little. “What are you doing here?”
“I was around here so I figured I would stop by after your shift.” You smiled, feeling warmth spread in your body that Jay had decided to come and see you.
“Are you off work too?”, you asked, your eyes drifting to the badge on his belt. You tried not to stare at the gun that was tugged beside it. Although it was covered by his shirt you could make out the outlines.
Your eyes flickered up again, feeling a little caught as you noticed Jay’s eyes on you. He looked so awake, so attentive, not how you felt after a long day in the ER.
“I’m not. Actually, Burgess is in the car waiting for me, so I should head back soon.” Your brows drew together, confused that Jay had still come to see you, even if he didn’t have much time. It was so unexpected and sweet that you felt a little overwhelmed trying to sort your thoughts.
“Kim’s waiting for you?” You were still having a hard time learning everyone’s names and faces, but you had seen her around the hospital. From what you could tell she seemed very nice. And stubborn, if necessary.
Jay followed your glance over his shoulder, where you could make out a parked black car in the distance. “Don’t worry about her.” He turned back to you. “She owes me a favour. She won’t tell.”
You didn’t know when you had decided to keep whatever was going on between Jay and you a secret, but you were glad he seemed to sense your hesitance of people knowing and respected it. Eventually you wouldn’t be able to keep it to yourselves anymore, you knew that, but for now you wanted this to be just between you and Jay.
Figure out whatever it was and what it could lead into before hearing everyone’s opinions. Especially Willy’s and Connor’s. The thought of one of them knowing was enough to send a shiver down your spine. “A favour?”
Jay shifted. “It’s a long story.”
“Well, I’ve got time, but I suppose you should get back. We don’t want to risk anything.” You almost sighed out loud, wishing for more time. But you knew Jay was as committed to his job as you were to yours and you didn’t want him to get in trouble.
“Right”, Jay muttered, but he didn’t move, his eyes on yours. You shifted, unsure what he was expecting you to do or say. “Well-”, you let out a nervous laugh, “why did you even come? I mean, if you don’t really have time.”
It wasn’t an accusation, only curiosity speaking. Jay’s lips curled up in an almost boyish way and he rubbed the base of his neck. “We haven’t talked about that date again”, he began and the words alone made your heart speed up. “I didn’t want to push you, so I thought I would ask you in person. And I just wanted to see you.”
Your heart swelled with fondness as you stared at Jay, his usual confident and casual demeanour replaced by what looked like uncertainty and maybe even nervousness as well.
“I came to Chicago to start over. And there are still some things I need to figure out.” You kept your voice calm and steady as you explained, hoping he couldn’t see how much strength it took you to open up. “It wouldn’t be fair to keep that from you.”
Jay waited, his face giving nothing away as he looked at you. Casting your gaze downwards you fiddled with your hands for a moment. “I don’t wanna screw this up.”
Slowly you lifted your head again, every fear you had thought of returning to you. What if you had scared him of? What if you were interpreting too much into this and Jay was only looking for some fun? What if you had already screwed this up?
His green eyes flickered between yours as you searched his face, trying to find hints to what he was feeling. Thinking.
“I don’t either”, he said seriously, clearing his throat. “Let’s just give it a try. Just one date, see how it goes from there.”
You looked at him, waiting for him to add something, but he didn’t, keeping the suggestion simple and undemanding.
“Okay.”
His jaw relaxed, his eyes lighting up. “Yeah?” You nodded, smiling yourself now. “Yeah. One date. Let’s do it.”
Jay broke into a grin, the sight enough to reassure you it had been the right choice. “I knew you would say yes”, he stated and you shook your head at him. “You’re persistent, Halstead.”
Tugging his hands into the pockets of his jacket Jay shrugged. “Comes with the job.”
Then he raised his phone. “I’m gonna text you.” You stared after him until the darkness had absorbed him, your heart pounding in your chest. But this time it wasn’t because you were scared or overwhelmed.
You would be going on a date with Jay Halstead.
This time, it was excitement.
-
Jay was taking you out Friday night.
You would be lying if you said you weren’t counting the days in your head, eager but also slightly nervous to meet him. Your encounters had been cut short until now, limited by either his or your work schedule.
Did he expect you to dress up or did he prefer a casual look? You wished you had someone you could ask about it, but you couldn’t tell anyone. Not yet.
In the end you decided it wouldn’t matter what choice you made. This wasn’t just about him, it was about you too and you wouldn’t make the mistake of changing who you were for someone ever again.
Still your thoughts were circling the upcoming date, so when Connor nudged you with his elbow to gain your attention, he wasn’t the first one to pull you out of your head that week.
“What are you thinking about?” You blinked yourself back to reality, closing the folder in front of you, which you had been bent over before your brother’s approach.
You didn’t see him much at the hospital, since he spend most of his time in the OR, but whenever your schedules aligned, he offered you a ride and you would spend the time in the car discussing your cases.
“Just how I barely see you these days.” Connor rose his brow. “What, you miss me?”, he asked amused and you shrugged, being serious. “What if I do?”
Living so far away from each other had meant you had barely seen Connor. Now that you had moved to Chicago the two of you had gotten to know each other much better and you had grown used to his presence, only recently moved out of his apartment and into your own.
Connor stared at you, obviously trying to determine whether you were making fun of him or being genuine. When you didn’t say anything, a sad smile appeared on his lips. “You’re right. I’m too busy these days. It’s just- everyone keeps asking me to do this and then that and-.”
“Hey,” you took a step forward, a smile on your lips as you nudged his shoulder. “I get it. You’re very popular here. No reason to get such a big head.” You were joking and Connor let out a breath, shaking his head in amusement. “You know that’s not what I was saying.”
“But it was what you were thinking”, you stated, enjoying it to mess with him. Connor’s face twisted unhappily and you almost giggled at the sight of it. A moment later his expression shifted, replaced by a mask of confidence. “Well, not everyone can be an amazing trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon.”
Now it was your turn to grimace and you scrunched up your nose. “Is that what you’re like when I’m not around? Because people kept telling me how strict and focused you always are that I almost ruined your rep.”
Connor smirked, before his expression turned serious again. “You are right though. You came to Chicago and I haven’t been around the past weeks. It’s not fair.”
You shook your head, your own amusement gone now too. “You don’t owe me anything. You already did so much for me and you know how grateful I am.”
“Dr. (Y/l/n)?” You looked up to where you saw Maggie calling your name. “Coming!” Turning back to Connor you sighed. “That’s my turn. How about you text me when you’re free and I cook for us? Because let’s be real your nutrition probably comes from the vending machine and the hospital’s menu these days and we both know neither is real food.”
Connor let out a laugh. “Doesn’t taste much different from what you cook”, he muttered, which earned him a jab to his shoulder from you. “I’m going to pretend you didn’t just say that”, you whispered as you took off, pretending to be offended by his joke. “You’re going to have to make up for it with a lot of ice-cream.”
“And you talk to me about real food”, you heard his voice before you reached Maggie.
-
It was only Thursday afternoon when you saw Jay again, his casual stance something you immediately recognized as you rounded the corner. He wasn’t alone, a brown haired woman, which you figured could only be Kim Burgess next to him as well as an older man with hair almost cut down to the scalp.
He looked grim, his arms crossed over his chest as he talked to Ethan, who seemed just as tense and unamused.
It would be better not to interfere you thought as you watched them, but then you caught Ethan’s eyes for a moment and you knew it was only right to join him to try and solve the obvious tension.
Straightening yourself you marched up to them, forcing a neutral smile on your lips. “Hey, I’m doctor (y/l/n). Is there something I can help with?” You glanced between the older man and Ethan, waiting for one of them to acknowledge you.
From the side you could feel Jay’s eyes boring into you, but you tried to avoid his gaze, fearing you would give away how well you knew him, if you allowed yourself a look.
For a moment none of them said anything, until slowly the man’s eyes shifted towards you. It felt like you shrank under his gaze. It was cold and unapologetic, his icy blue eyes mustering you appraisingly. You didn’t know who this man was, but if you had to take a guess you would assume him to be Jay’s boss. The famous Voight.
Jay hadn’t talked much about him, always keeping his words vague, but it was clear the man in front of you wasn’t someone to mess with.
“We’re here to talk to one of your patients, Mr. Diaz. He’s a suspect and he might have valuable information for us.”
His voice was as cold as his gaze, sounding raspy as if he was hoarse from yelling too much. You didn’t want to imagine this man ever screaming at you.
Your gaze flickered to Ethan, silently asking him for his position on the matter. “And I already told you that’s not happening. The man’s straight out of surgery. We wake him now we risk a number of conditions such as brain damage and stroke. You’re going to need to wait.”
“I think you’re forgetting who you’re talking to.” Voight- it definitely had to be him- took a step closer, his voice threatening. A shocked breath escaped you as you watched the tension thicken, Ethan’s eyes narrowing.
“I know exactly who I’m talking to. But this is my case, my patient and my responsibility. We’re at the hospital, not the police station so it’s my call.”
Finally your eyes travelled to Kim and Jay, their faces both masks of conflict. Having felt your gaze Jay’s eyes shifted to yours, his expression softening when he saw the hint of fear on yours.
“How about we all calm down for a moment”, he said sternly, stepping between Voight and Ethan. You held your breath, admiring him for his courage but at the same time fearing the consequences it might meant for him. You didn’t want to imagine what Voight’s anger might look like.
“We all want the same thing.” Turning to Ethan he asked, “How long is it going to be until you can wake him up?”
Ethan stayed silent for a moment before he broke his stare with Voight and looked at Jay. “3 to 4 hours, depending on his labs. It was an invasive surgery.” Jay nodded. “Then we wait 3. If he’s not awake then, you will wake him.”
You could see Ethan’s jaw twitch, but he nodded slowly, accepting the peace offering before walking off. You felt your whole body relax, meeting Kim’s eyes who sent you a soft smile.
“Burgess, get back to the station! Halstead, a word!” Voight’s voice was as sharp as a knife and your gaze flickered to Jay’s, your nerves back. To your surprise Jay didn’t seem fazed in the slightest. He was tense, you could see it in his shoulders, but there was not a hint of fear or regret in his eyes as he followed Voight to the side of the hall.
“Don’t worry. Voight will get over it.” You turned your head to find Kim looking at you with sympathy in her eyes. “He looked like he’s about to kill him”, you almost whispered, scared to attract the man’s attention.
Kim followed your line of sight. “We’ve all been at the receiving end of Voight’s temper at least once. It’s no fun, but when working with him it’s inevitable. Jay can handle it.”
You didn’t doubt that. But he shouldn’t have to. It wasn’t fair. Sure, he had undermined his bosses authority in a way, but he had only done it to defuse a conflict. Something that could have ended a lot worse for everyone involved.
“I should get back now before Voight sees me chatting. But it was nice to finally meet you” Kim offered you a smile and you forced one on your lips as well. “You too.”
When she was gone you turned back towards the corner Voight and Jay had rounded, waiting for a sign of them returning. Although it didn’t take long for them to re-appear it was more than enough for your worry to make you a nervous wreck.
Both of them looked equally stoic as they walked through the hall, the tension between them evident enough for everyone to keep their distance. You looked at them from your spot at the nurses desk, trying to catch Jay’s eyes to silently ask him if he was okay. But he didn’t look at you, his eyes trained straight ahead.
At first you thought he did it because of his boss right next to him, but when the two of them parted ways, Jay still didn’t acknowledge you at all. “Hey!” Your hand shot out as he marched past you, grabbing onto his arm.
Jay stopped, turning to you with the same cold look he had worn before. The one that told everyone to get out of his way and not mess with him right now. You could imagine he was pissed, getting told off by his boss for trying to do the right thing, but you would have thought his expression would soften when he looked at you.
It turned out you had been wrong. For a second your eyes flickered over his face as you tried to get a read on him, but he looked so different from the last time you had been together that it was impossible. “Are you in trouble?”
Jay shifted, shaking his head once in an abrupt motion. “Don’t worry about Voight. He’s almost always pissed at someone.”
“But today that someone is you. It’s not fair. You were just trying to de-escalate the situation.” Jay let out a sigh that sounded impatient and you took a step back, taken aback by his reaction. “Anyway, thank you for that. I don’t know what would have happened if you didn’t step up. Ethan can be so stubborn too.”
Jay raised his brow, but it wasn’t in an amused or teasing way. he almost looked…annoyed. “Don’t thank me yet. As long as we get the information we need.”
You swallowed, your eyes flickering to your surroundings. “Are you mad at me or something?”, you whispered, unease filling you.
You couldn’t imagine a reason why Jay would act that way towards you. Even if he did it to avoid raising suspicions, it was very much over the top. No, you decided, there had to be more. Because you couldn’t imagine him speaking to Maggie or April that way.
“Why would I be mad? You told me there are things you’re figuring out. I just didn’t think you meant it so literally.”
You drew in a surprised breath, confused by his words as much as his passive-aggressive tone. “What?”
Jay let out a huff. “You know it all makes sense now. How you were so hesitant about a date, that you’re trying to keep this a secret.” Jay shook his head, his frustration turning into annoyance.
“I’m not blaming you”, he clarified, “weighing your options before you make a decision. We never defined what this is between us, so it’s on me if I expected something you clearly aren’t interested in. But I would prefer not be one of your games.”
“Excuse me?” You stared at him with wide eyes, your mouth hanging open in shock as your chest tightened. Something had gone very wrong, only you couldn’t figure out when it had happened and why.
Jay leaned forward, your whole body going stiff as he spoke close to your ear. “I’m out.”
Involuntarily a shiver ran down your spine and you flinched a little, hurt by his words that you couldn’t make sense of. Opening your mouth to say something you weren’t quick enough as Jay took a step back again, looking you straight in the eye. “Have fun.”
Then he turned, leaving you standing there staring after him in shock. None of it made sense, but his attitude had hit you so unprepared you hadn’t been able to defend yourself nor ask the right questions to figure this out. And you doubted Jay would answer your texts.
To hold back the tears that threatened to make their way down your cheeks you forced your teeth into your bottom lip, willing yourself to pull it together.
Maybe it was better this way.
Because you hadn’t even gone on one date with Jay and he had already crushed your heart, leaving you empty and hollow as the hurt spread slowly in your body.
You didn’t want to imagine the pain, if you had fully opened yourself up to him and he had rejected you. The heartbreak seemed unbearable.
But then why did it hurt so much already?
-
Needless to say you had been in a bad mood since your encounter with Jay at the hospital. He hadn’t texted or called you after that and you hadn’t done so either, not ready to hear his distanced voice again, his usually sparkling green eyes now hard when he looked at you.
Maybe he had heard what had brought you to Chicago and decided he wasn’t interested in dealing with someone like you, but you couldn’t imagine who he should have known from. And it didn’t seem like Jay to judge you.
It all seemed so out of nowhere, like something had changed between you from one day to the next. Maybe the signs had always been there and you had been too naive and overlooked them.
A part of you wanted to ask Will about his brother, if anything had happened he knew about, but whenever you decided to do it, you changed your mind again. Because Will had never mentioned Jay to you after you had brought him up that one time so he probably didn’t know anything about you and him at all.
But you missed him.
Missed his witty messages, updates from his day and questions about yours. They had given you something to look forward to in your day. Something that brought you joy and made you feel special. Now that it was over you were still checking your phone, your heart longing for a text from him.
Anything that showed you he still cared.
