Hey, does anyone know how to clean a super old plushie made of black fabric? Specifically an old Build-a-Bear Toothless, if that helps.
My boy has sat on top of my bookshelf for about a year now and unfortunately he's getting a little bit mouldy. I don't sleep with him and it's only really on his eyes and fins so he isn't a hazard or anything.
Using only water and detergent isn't gonna do the job but I'm worried that adding weak bleach or vinegar is gonna lighten the fabric. He's supposed to be a night fury, not a light fury.

Things I figured out recently that work better for me for cleaning as someone with ADHD that might work for you
Wearing Gloves while cleaning so I don't think about the texture of what I pick up/touch
Seeing what I can get done in 15/25 minutes at a time with breaks included (shorter times seem to be more manageable)
Put the radio on or a CD as background music instead of playing music on my phone as it can be distracting
or you could install a blocking app on your phone if you still want to use Spotify, YouTube music ect.
I recommend the app "stay focused" which is available on Google play (Android) and the App store (Apple)

im pretty sure u already answered smth like this before but i didnt really get it 😭 but how do u guys turn the screentone (dots) into grey (smooth) like in reo mikages panels for example. i have a really hard time cleaning those up cause of the lines in the hair and was wondering if there was an easier way to do it. thank u for all these clean panels by the way!!!
hi anon, the long story short is that i draw over the half-tone to create a layer of solid colour! a lot of it comes from practice as half-tones are normally used for shading, so as long as you use a darker colour for the half-tones it'll look okay!
i'll use one of the reo mikage panels for an example. i start with removing the background by erasing it, so i have this to work with:
Tumblr media
zooming in on the hair, this is what it looks like:
Tumblr media
as you can see, the half-tones and the thin black lines make this awkward to clean. so my solution: ignore them! i pick a colour roughly the same shade (you can use a blend tool if you want to get it as close as possible) and use the bottom layer with the panel as a guideline of where to draw the new region. i always do this on a new layer to make all the other sections easier later on.
Tumblr media
then, repeat this for the other half-tones. if you keep each shade of grey on its own layer, you only need to be neat around the edges by hiding parts underneath what you've already cleaned. i most use this just to save time:
Tumblr media
as for the black lines on top of the half-tones, you can either continue using a previous shade of grey, or make it a little darker for more shadows, but again i recommend just drawing over these. if you were to try and keep these lines in the panel would look messy in my opinion.
i also picked a darker grey for the shading on the face rather than cleaning around the black lines:
Tumblr media
finally, i replace the original panel at the bottom with a solid layer of black:
Tumblr media
the final panel then looks like this:
Tumblr media
this is just much simpler than cleaning around half-tones and the more cleaning you do the easier it will become for you to grasp where to cover black lines for shading, and where to leave some in. i will sometimes leave a few as a lead-up into a shaded area. for example, leaving a few darker lines in on jason's neck here makes it look closer to the manga's original art style:
Tumblr media
the most crucial part of using this method to remember to keep every new shade of grey on separate layers!
hope this helps!
also for future reference, all posts of this kind are tagged with "cleaning help" and are linked on our "about" page!

Cleaning resources master post;
I grew up with the kind of mom who kept everything either PERFECT or a hoarder mess, so I'm making this to help you out if you also struggle to do normal clean.
First things first- don't mix bleach with anything at all other than water. Technically it's "don't mix bleach with acids" but acidity isn't always listed on packaging, and if this goes wrong you'll warcrime yourself, so just do not. Mixing any commercial cleaning products is a bad idea- you'll occasionally be told to mix soap and vinegar and water, this is fine.
Also on that point, do open your windows if you can. Even if that's all you do, it'll help get clean air in.
The first thing you should do in all situations is get your employees working- what this means is that if you have the washing machine going and the dishwasher going *something is happening* and if that's all that happens today then that's okay.
Laundry: get colour catchers. They're not super expensive and they save a lot of trouble.
You don't have to separate individual colours, you can do light and dark. Warm colours and cool colours are also a valid division.
White clothes need to be washed separately. Not white with a pattern, not very pale blue, just white. Plain white cotton or polycotton (like bedsheets) can all go in together if you don't have enough white shirts to make up a load.
Dishes:
Wood doesn't go in the dishwasher. Anything antique or special also shouldn't, and anything with that nice shiny gold paint (like your grandma's teacups or something) shouldn't go in either.
Big pots should be mostly cleaned by hand, small pots and other "tough" washes go on the bottom rack, delicate things with no major gunk (like coffee cups and glasses) go on the top.
Dusting:
Vaccum if you can.
Get a cheap air purifier (IKEA has one for £30)
Damp dusting doesn't need a specialist sponge (although they can be helpful) just use a cloth thats a little damp. It'll catch the dust and stop you kicking it all up.
Furniture polish does actually have a purpose in that it repels dust- use the spray kind of you're not a masochist and your furniture isn't antique.
Emergency care:
Sink full of dishes and you're worried about flies but literally can't do them now (dishwasher is already full or you are disabled and don't have the energy)?
Open put a bin bag and tape it over around the edges. Critters won't get in, and that's what matters here.
Can't leave your room right now?
Assuming you have enough drinks to last and you're getting food somehow, big Ziplocs are your friend. Dirty dishes in the Ziploc, put them all together. They might go gross but they won't make you sick.
Not sure where to start in a depression mess?
get bin bags. Fill one, indescriminately, with whatever you can see that needs to go out.
Put all the dirty laundry in one place. That place can be the bathtub. We're just getting it away. You can also do this with all your bedding. You don't have to even take the cover off the duvet, just get it out of the space.
Put all the dirty dishes together. This can be in the kitchen, or in a huddle in the hallway if it needs to be. This can also be in a bin bag if you're worried about contamination. You can take them out later.
Look again. Is that better? Can you see more things to go in the bin? Can you see more laundry? Can you see more dishes?
If you can move around again, crack out the surface wipes. Get the gunk off anything that has gunk.
At this stage, try to go put the dishes in the dishwasher and get a load of washing in the machine. You don't even have to start the machines if the idea of hanging out the washing makes you feel ill.
Get a sheet on your bed. You don't need to do the duvet or pillows (you can use a blanket) but the mattress will be uncomfortable and harder to clean.
Go have a shower. If you can't, just do an English bath (flannel to the bits and pits, deodorant, mouthwash)
Sleep, in your now much more useable room.
Resources:
Cleanipedia.com
this is a wiki of cleaning advice- it's made by Unilever so it's occasionally trying to sell you things, but the advice is solid.
Ann Russell (on YouTube or tiktok)
https://youtube.com/@annrussell5531?si=K6SUjvOxF6_q7qwh
She used to be a cleaning lady and she's lovely- lots of videos on how to fix specific things, but searching is hard, because tiktok. YouTube is a little better.
Sweepy
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.sweepy.sweepy
This is an app that tracks how often things have been done and gives recommended frequency- I've added each room in my flat, and also myself as a room, since you can add custom tasks and it lets me know that it's been three days since I've washed my hair etc.
If you have any tips to add please let me know and I'll add them!

supporting communities & people impacted by the Southport attack and the far-right riots in the UK
here is a list of community fundraisers I found, starting with those aiming to support the Southport community after the appalling attack at a children dance party, to the fundraisers helping those affected by the subsequent racist and Islamophobic far-right/nazi riots
Edited on 5 August to include Middlesbrough fundraisers. Edited on 6 August to correct the link on the Books for Spellow Lane fundraiser, to adjust the name change for the Belfast fundraiser, and to adjust the wording in the second last paragraph.
Southport:
Southport Strong Together Appeal - organised by the community foundation for Merseyside, for those affected by the Southport knife attack
United for Southport families - the funds will be distributed among the nine families of the children who were at the party
Swifties for Southport - a fundraiser for the Alder Hey Children's charity, which supports the victims and the affected families, as well as first responders and clinicians. Extra funds will also support the wider Southport community
Fundraiser for the Southport Mosque - a fundraiser to aid rebuilding or possibly re-locating the Southport Mosque after the damages it suffered during the riots
Rebuilding Windsor Mini Mart - fundraiser to rebuild the locally-owned grocery store that was targeted during the attacks, broken into, and looted
Liverpool:
Fundraiser for the Spellow Hub - the Spellow Hub was broken into, looted and set on fire at night during the riots. The Spellow Hub is a newly created one-of-a-kind (in the UK) institution, which consists of a library as well as a community centre with a mission to help people get education and pathways to work
Books for Spellow Lane - another fundraiser for the library in the Spellow Hub, to replace the books and rebuild the library there edit: included the correct link
Hartlepool:
Fundraiser for the Nasir Mosque - the Nasir Mosque was attacked following Southport riots; this fundraiser is organised by Hartlepool citizens to help the mosque deal with the damages as well as to show appreciation for the role of the mosque in the community. edit: the funds will be also distributed to the local community!
Rebuilding the Farm Shop - the shop was targeted during the riots, and when the owner and his son tried to protect it, they were also violently attacked. The fundraiser is to help fix the damages to the store.
Sunderland:
help rebuild Citizens Advice Sunderland offices after arson - two of the Citizens Advice Sunderland offices were set on fire during the riots, and one of them is completely destroyed.
Hull:
Hull Help for Refugees - a local fundraiser to support the Hull Help for Refugees charity, the donated money will be re-distributed to community members affected by the riots
Fundraiser for Hull Help for Refugees and Welcome House in Hull - collected money will be donated to the two charities
Belfast:
help fix racially motivated damages - originally the fundraiser for the Sahara Shisha Cafe which was targeted by the far right in Belfast during the riots, now a fundraiser for all affected businesses in the area. edited to reflect the change of the name of the fundraiser to avoid any confusion
Middlesbrough:
Supporting residents after the riots - Middlesbrough has suffered so much during the riots, lots of businesses as well as just regular family homes were vandalised, had their windows smashed or even were broken into. This fundraiser wants to distribute the funds between affected people to help them fix the damages, and to generally support the local community. the newest fundraiser, imo potentially the most urgent one
Fundraiser for a Care worker's car which was set on fire - a car belonging to an employee of a care agency was set on fire during the riots while he was on shift at a care home.
If you want to donate locally but there is no fundraiser to support where you live, consider donating to your local charities oriented towards Muslim or PoC communities, or towards anti-racist and refugee organizations! And go support your local Muslim/Arab/Black/Asian/Refugee owned businesses!
If you have any information about other local fundraisers, feel free to add to the post or don't hesitate to let me know and I will add them here! We have seen so much hate in the past few days, we have to stay strong and keep supporting each other!
Stay safe everyone 💛

im sorry if you've been asked this before but, how do you remove the background from the manga cap? whenever i save as transparent png (on ibis paint), the skin of the character also becomes transparent. thank you, and thank you for all your hard work!!
hi anon! when i save my caps after cleaning i have to make sure that there is no background, so it looks like this:
Tumblr media
you can see that the "background" looks checkered, this automatically exports the file for me in the way i want it to in clip studio paint.
i had a read of exporting files from ibis paint, there seems to be two ways of exporting: exporting a layer as png and exporting a canvas as png
it seems that if you export a layer you will only get the outline, like this, which sounds like the issue you're having? link
Tumblr media
i think what you may be looking for is "save as transparent png" instead: link
Tumblr media
sorry i don't have any experience in ibis paint myself so this would be my best guess!

The Creator's Guide to Comics Devices is OPEN!!! comicsdevices.com
An online library of visual-narrative devices that are used in the medium of comics and other sequential art.
Happy Halloween! I'm really excited to be finally launching* what is maybe one of my most ambitious, largest work yet. This online library is the next phase of a research project that began in May 2020, when I first mused on how comics as a field doesn't have a resource that catalogues devices used in the medium. Like, theatre has devices, so does literature, and film! So why shouldn't comics? I always had an interest in comics studies and analysis. I love reading, making and thinking comics. However most of my knowledge was intuitive - I learned comics from osmosis and experience. This is true for many of my peers. Speaking about comics as a creator is hard, because we don't have a robust system of language. When we had to speak, many of us tend to reach for the language developed for film by film practitioners. If there is language specific to comics, it's either scattered in multiple blogs or hidden away in academic journals. The Comics Devices library is meant to aggregate everything and everybody into a single hub! After exploring some multiple resources, alongside some original, independent research, here is the first edition! * The Comics Devices project is still a work-in-progress! It's not final, nor will it ever be. This is why I am seeking contributors to help build this library. Translations, comics examples, etc. There is a lot of work to do! If you are interested, reply to this post or submit an expression of interest on this page.  Have fun everyone!! (Now time for me to melt x_x)
