BBC Merlin - 9-1-1 crossover fic

Merlin is a 9-1-1 dispatcher. He kind of invented the whole thing when he heard of telephones and then kept at it. He figured that when Albion's need was greatest, quite a lot of people would give 9-1-1 a call and therefore bring him closer to his missing King. (Or perhaps when someone found a guy walking out of a lake or smth, Merlin would know where to find him. Needless to say, Merlin had a lot of false calls.)

One day, as Merlin is on a call with a child who's cat is stuck in a tree, a fire suddenly breaks out and a firefighter captain takes over the phone: This is firefighter Pendragon. We have a fire at xxx-xxx, I repeat, we have a fire at xxx-xxx, require additional paramedic units etc. Etc.

For the first time in Merlin's entire career, Merlin is too stunned to react. He quickly catches himself though. "I'm sorry, could you repeat your name, please?"

"This is firefighter Arthur Pendragon, from station 204."

"You mean Arthur Pendragon as in-'

*Long sigh* "yes, as in the famous lawyer Pendragon. Uther Pendragon's son."

Merlin: I meant as in the legendary King Arthur. From medieval history?

Arthur: oh? *Sounding a little less annoyed* maybe? I didn't know he had a last name. I've only seen the Disney movie

Merlin: haha alright. Dispatch x-amount of paramedics now.

Arthur: Don't you want me to ask why I'm not a lawyer? Everyone usually asks me that.

Merlin: No, if you are who I think you are, then this makes much more sense than law school.

Arthur: who do you think I- oh crap, I gotta go. Thanks-

Merlin: Merlin

Arthur: *grins* like the wizard?

Merlin: with the hat and everything.

(originally, I wanted Merlin to then go to the 204 and apply to be their paramedic but this makes a ton of sense to me too.)

You know how we do the whole 'Buck has a secret past as a Navy SEAL, but doesn't like talking about it' in fanfiction? What if we did the same thing for Eddie? I know his past in the army is well known, but at the same time, he doesn't like talking about what happened, so it makes sense for them to not know what fully happened. Him being a medic on a Black Ops Army Ranger tesam, which is basically the army equivalent of a SEAL, is a wonderful idea for an au. Maybe one where an old enemy takes the 118 hostage and Buck and Eddie use their SEAL and Ranger experience to take the guy down, and the 118 is just like 'what... just happened'

Buck: i was a seal so... but idk how eddie did all that

Eddie: Yeah, i was on an army ranger black ops team :] nbd

like okay, so arthur dies, merlin lives forever. then dies because magic mumbo jumbo. magic isnt done with them though so 1500+ years later, eddie diaz walks into the 118 and buck can't stand the man. but like they get to know one another and memories start to resurface, and so do powers.

idk the idea was mostly a joke when i grew in my brain. when i told my partner i couldn't stop laughing. but if like even one person tells me to, ill do it.

In another life, at another crossroad, Carlos holds contact with Athena, and he follows her advice to train for a future career as a detective. Without speaking to TK – as always for fear of confrontation – he drops out of training and joins the Texas Rangers. Against the will of his superiors, he follows a trail across the country, burns all the bridges and leaves TK in worry and distress that even Owen can't counter. TK doesn't know who to turn to, except for the only person he thinks he can hold responsible, apart from Carlos himself: Athena. She doesn't know TK, she doesn't even really know Carlos, but he's in trouble and she's seen what he's capable of. He is an exceptional talent, a sleuth, a natural-born detective. Above all, he's a young man in trouble, and Athena has plenty of experience with that. And at the end of an absolutely unauthorized adventure including a stolen ambulance, TK's first time using a rifle and both of them exceeding all powers to dismantle a gang of criminals, Athena will pull all the stops to have Carlos finish his exam. He passes with the second-best grade ever achieved by a candidate and leaves the Texas Rangers. Wistfulness drives him to his father's grave, where he kisses his hat goodbye, places it on the gravestone and returns to his husband with a promise.

The room was filled with a warm fog that once would have calmed him. But now he could only think of the wet heat of sitting on a balcony waiting for death. He thought of the temperature difference between the cold sea water and the warm air. His hands shook as he tugged at the waistband of his gym shorts. A small voice in his head worried that if he actually took off his boxer briefs that he’d end up panicking and needing Eddie during the shower. He felt safer leaving something on but he knew he needed to get clean. There was no part of him that was ready but he still made himself take off the last bit of fabric. If Buck had to guess he stood outside the shower naked for about ten minutes. The sound of the water never stopped sounded like a death march but eventually he forced himself to step into the far end where the water was barely anything more than a mist.

Evan wouldn’t have entertained the joke except Tyler had lifted his pinky up. Evan had made plenty of promises with friends during high school. He had a few promises made and broken in college. Even some of the guys at the club would make promises of favors when someone would cover a shift. But Evan had only ever had one person in his life give him a pinky promise before. He stared at Tyler’s finger with his lips slightly parted from the shock. “What are you doing?” “It’s a pinky promise, duh,” Tyler moved to force Evan’s pinky to twist with his own. “Pinky promises are very serious and you can never break them.” “I know that,” Evan said with a small whisper. Tyler squeezed around Evan’s pinky and leaned in to kiss his own fist before he repeated the promise, “No birthday kisses ever.”

Evan felt the weight of an arm around his middle before he fully processed being awake. The weight felt like a lot of things: comfort, home, blinding heat, impassioned desire, but mostly it just felt like Eddie. There was a gentle comfort in waking up with his best friend there. Evan wasn’t sure how he’d managed to trick the star of the baseball team into enjoying his company but he wasn’t complaining. He shifted around a little awkwardly in order to face Eddie. There were a lot of things about his new best friend that Evan had gotten used to. Eddie was serious –a frown or a disapproving look were usually on his face. Edie was secretive –Evan had gotten close enough to learn that the small glint in his eye was his tell, if he was lying his eyes sparkled differently. But the thing Evan noticed the most about Eddie was how uncomfortable he was –not that Evan felt any better, but Eddie was going to graduate in just a few months and Evan wasn’t even sure if he liked living in his own skin. It was something he thought he made easier for Eddie, at least while they were alone in their room. When the rest of the school looked at Eddie they saw a very different person than who Evan was used to. And sometimes he wasn’t sure which version of Eddie was the real one.

“Mister Diaz,” Buck’s words finally sounded crystal clear. If he’d found his own son practically sitting in the lap of a grown man while underage in a bar Eddie would have been upset. Finding Buck was still concerning but didn’t strike as many of his chords. The boy was twenty so Eddie knew the ID wasn’t too far off –if the bouncer had bothered to check it at all. Buck tried to jump from the lap of the man he’d been talking to and flung himself slightly into Eddie’s unexpecting arms. “Mister Diaz, what are you doing here? Is Chris here?” Buck looked around like he expected to see his best friend hiding behind Eddie.  “No, Buck. And you shouldn’t be here either.” Eddie didn’t question what about him made Buck think he would be a cool enough parent to sneak his son into a bar underage. In the years that Buck and Chris had been friends, Eddie couldn’t think of one cool thing he had ever done.
