Book recommendations please (if possible)

Hello there!

Here's some that fit the mold, I think. Not all of these are my favorite, but you might love them so I don't want to discount them!

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio - This is a perfect book that'll get you in the "dark academia" mood.

If We Were Villains is a mystery novel set in a New England acting conservatory during the 1990s. After tragedy strikes the fourth year class, we watch their friend group (friends mainly by proximity, mind you) start to unravel.

Calling If We Were Villains a "cozy" mystery wouldn't give the book fair credit. While you can curl up under a blanket, a cup of cocoa and read it while the fall leaves start to fall; it's more of a book that'll leave you on the edge of year seat wanting more.

Breaking Point by Alex Flinn: This is a book that I often describe as a "beginner's guide to dark academia" due to both the subject matter and the age of the main character.

While it's set in a high school, this is still a novel in which the main character is asked the question almost all questions in dark academia books are posed, "How far are you willing to go?"

All that said, at risk of spoilers, this may be one to check the trigger warnings for. It's a pretty dark book, especially for being targeted towards young adults.

Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin - This book is actually one of my favorite books of all times and deserves all the praise that has followed it since the year it was published.

Giovanni’s Room follows the story of David, a young man who’s fallen in love with both a young woman named Hella and another young man named Giovanni against the backdrop of 1950s Paris.

We read about, what some might call, a tumultuous love affair and a constant question of identity. Baldwin’s depiction of the internal struggle is masterful without being overtly extravagant.

While it's a slow-paced, shorter read; it'll leave an impression in the best possible way.

Fans of the Impossible Life by Kate Scelsa - This book is a bit of a modern retelling of Brideshead Revisted by Evelyn Waugh, with a few, maybe even many, liberties taken.

It follows the senior year of three teenagers: Jeremy, Mina and Sebastian. Over the course of the book, you go through the coming of age story of each character. Jeremy coming to terms with his identity, Sebastian and his bouts of self destruction and Mina’s relationship with her mental health. 

What's fun about this book (at least to me), is that it's told in three different point of views. Jeremy's is first, Sebastian's is second, and Mira's is third.

That said, there is a pretty infamous scene that I didn't like, but can be skipped over without losing any of the plot (If you read the book, you'll know what it is immediately.)

A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood - Much like Giovanni's Room, this a slow-paced short read that's heart wrenching.

It follows the life of George, a gay middle-aged professor living in southern California in the 1960s. We follow him as he processes the death of his late partner, actively still grieves and learns to deal with the concept of being alone, but not lonely.

While the book is very mundane, there's something so human about it, you can't wait to see what's to become of him.

Dark Academia book idea:

An average young man wants to learn the art of Something Boring, and moves from his midwestern life to the east coast. While there, he hears about these mysterious parties going on late at night in the basement of the high-class dormitory across from his shitty apartment. The guests are never invited — they simply come dressed in elegant dress-ware (I’m talking bejeweled gowns, white tuxedos, and beautiful masks and jewelry).

No one’s ever been officially invited until our Narrator, of course. He’s also the only person to ever meet the mysterious host, a beautiful man (a Henry Winter-type for all you TSH fans) whom the Narrator describes homoerotically for like two pages. The Host continues to remain a mystery, though he’s obviously obsessed with our Narrator for a (probably gay) reason we don’t know about yet.

Our Narrator sleeps around, but he can’t stop thinking about that Host. He meets with the Host every night at those mysterious parties, only to find out the Host is in love with a Beautiful, Tragic Girl who’s dating a Horrid, Misogynistic Man who treats her terribly (a Bunny Corcoran-type).

Long story short, our Narrator has to help his boyfriend new friend, The Host, win the Tragic Girl, only resulting in a couple ghastly murders, lots of drugs, and a mourning Narrator.

Does this story sound familiar? Yeah? Well, change the university setting to 1920’s New York, and that’s just the plot of The Great Gatsby.

My point? The Great Gatsby IS a Dark Academia read and you guys are hella pretentious for pretending it’s not.

zuko - <> shows zuko how to like,,,enjoy things (and how to let go of some of that pressure to be always right and the adult and in charge bc they were raised with so much responsibility on their shoulders even tho they were just kids)? she is also super protective of him (once she trusts him), one of the only ppl who can match suki fully in hand to hand combat, both do the Disappointed Parent Look when the group falls into chaos, but by themselves, the two of them end up in hijinks

aang- suki enjoys his optimism and they’re just chill bros, they love exploring abandoned placed together

yue gives suki rocks she finds on all their travels and suki lines them up on their mantle around the pictures of them in increasingly weird locations 

suki loves guarding yue’s meetings bc she gets to watch her absolutely rip a new one into misogynistic old men and it never fails to bring her joy

What Do I Write? 

I’m not sure how to best describe my writing but my lovely friend @connieturnpenny​ once said “your gay agenda is showing” while I was talking about it and I think that sums it all up pretty well. I’d like to have it on my tombstone some day. To be a bit more specific, I write Young Adult, character-driven, contemporary fiction that is full of queer characters trying their best.

To date I have two major novel drafts:  Summer Hours, which is about a teenage boy whose sister goes missing at the same time he’s starting to realize he’s in love with his best friend. Call It What You Want, which is about two ex-best friends forced to work together on the same short film. 

Both of these are queer of course.

I also have these two messes that have yet to be more than ideas: my artsy gay summer camp story, which is exactly what it says on the tin, and this equally untitled, unplotted project which is dark academia.

I’ve also written many short stories and created many, many, many characters over the years. Additionally, I just got into writing fanfiction again after roughly a decade away from it! Here is my Ao3.

One Piece *ON-GOING* (pirates, dumb squads, adventure, friendship/nakamaship, plot twists, feels, complicated timeline)

Gintama *FINISHED (manga)* (Action, comedy, fourth-wall breaking, friendship, feels) Set during the Edo Period but it's invaded with aliens that's why there's a touch of modern technology. Samurais are dorks and badass at the same time.

Fairy Tail *FINISHED* (feels, adventure, friendship, implied romance, dumb squad, fantasy) Different people with different dreams... It's like Harry Potter but they're adults and with matured themes.

Attack on Titan *ON-GOING* (feels, action, plot twists, thriller, psychological) titans munching humans to humans killing humans as well.
