Voice hoarse, you explain how today has been one of the worst days in a long, long time and that all you wanted to do was come home to him.
"I'm so sorry, sweetheart. But today is finally over. Let go of it all, and I'll take it from here, yeah?"
A muted nod is his only answer before you get on the floor, ready to forget about everything but him for the next few hours.

Herbalism 101: Mullein Leaf
Fun fact: Mullein is a member of the Snap Dragon Family.

The Mullein plant has been around for years and has more than 200 species. The most popular type is common mullein (Verbascum Thapsus.) the leaves harvested near the bottom of the plant and used either dried or fresh.
Mullein flowers and leaves were used on animals and people for a variety of issues:
Cough
Congestion
Bronchitis
Asthma
Constipation
Pain
Inflammation
Migraine
Sleep
Gout
By the late 1800s, mullein became a popular treatment for people with tuberculosis in Europe, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Keep in mind that many of the benefits of mullein are based on anecdotal experiences. More human clinical studies are needed to understand the benefits of this herb. -Healthline
Mullein leaf is sold in various forms:
Tea
Extract
Oil
Powder
Capsule
Elixir
Some can be made into creams.
Some herbalists recommend mullein for respiratory and inflammatory conditions, but there is not enough scientific evidence of its effectiveness. -Healthline
Dioscorides, a Greek physician pharmacologist and botanist, practicing in the 1st century in Rome, who authored the herbal De Materia Medica, was one of the first to recommend mulleins use in lung conditions around 2,000 years ago. It was used as a hair wash in ancient Roman times; the leaf ash to darken hair, and the yellow flowers for lightening it. The leaves were dried, rolled and used as wicks for candles and the entire dried flowering stalks were dipped in tallow and used for torches, hence the names 'candlewick plant' or 'torches'. According to Maida Silverman in her book A City Herbal, " The great respect and love formerly accorded to mullein can be inferred from the number and variety of the folk names for it." -Mountain Rose herbs.
Mullein leaf, flower, and root, with its litany of folk uses ranging from 'nature's toilet paper' to an effective apotropaic (fancy word meaning that which wards off evil spirits), have been used extensively in folk medicine. Its magical qualities were numerous, going beyond simply warding off evil but also was thought to instill courage and health, provide protection, and to attract love. In fact, it was believed that wearing mullein would ensure fertility and keep potentially dangerous animals at bay while trekking along in the wilderness. Further, allegedly a practice for men in the Ozark mountains to attract love consisted of simply pointing the mullein's flowering stalk towards the direction of his love's house and seeing if the stalk went upright again indicating her reciprocated love. Mullein, like so many herbs of European origin, was introduced by the colonists and then incorporated into the Native American healing tradition. The root was made into a necklace for teething infants by the Abnaki tribe, the Cherokee applied the leaves as a poultice for cuts and swollen glands, and other tribes rubbed the leaves on the body during ritual sweat bathes. Additionally, the flowers were used internally as teas and topically as poultices. The Navajos smoked mullein, referring to it as "big tobacco" and the Amish were known to partake as well. Presently, mullein can be found at health food stores often prepared as soothing leaf tea or an ear oil made of the infused flowers. -mountainroseherbs
According to King's American dispensatory (a book first published in 1854 that covers the uses of herbs used in American medical practice), "upon the upper portion of the respiratory tract its influence is pronounced." Mullein was prescribed by Eclectic Physicians (a branch of American medicine popular in the 1800-early 1900's which made use of botanical remedies) who considered it to be an effective demulcent and diuretic, and a mild nervine "favoring sleep." -Mountain Rose herbs.

And by 'didn't object,' I really mean grumbled as you did it but didn't take them off immediately after.
"I still don't understand why you girls wear these silly things," He mutters to himself, his serpentine voice coming out strangely demulcent as the pads of his fingers trail softly over the wing of one of your butterfly clips as you brush the side of his hair back, holding it softly behind his ear as you take one of the clips from his hand.
"They're not silly," You refute, punctuating your words by firmly clipping a strand of his hair back. He looks at you through his eyelashes, unamused yet rather compliant to your indulgences. "It's fashionable."
He looks at you disbelieving.
"I'm not very known for my fashion sense, doll," He chuckles dryly, looking away and lolling his head back. You quickly hold it back in place as you shuffle to the other side of his head, copying the style on both sides.
It's a rare time late at night after you both had taken a shower and were ready to go to bed; his hair is much wilder than usual, curly and untamed instead of sleek and gelled back when he goes out. He still wouldn't go out like this, most likely. Grumpy Crosshair has a reputation to uphold, after all.
"And..." You mutter, adjusting the clip a little more and gathering more hair under it, finally pulling your hands away and smiling victoriously. "There!"
Before Crosshair can say a thing, you spin him around the chair to face your vanity, and his stern, almost annoyed face shifts immediately into something perhaps soft; more surprised, to be honest.
His eyebrows are raised as he looks at himself; his hair is bunched up into three pigtails, two on each side of his head and one on the top, his short strands spraying out like a fountain of gray. Other pieces are tugged back with regular hair pins, barely containing bursts of curls that want to fly out and frame around his scalp. The bright pink and yellow butterfly clips look so incredibly silly on him, which makes the sight even cuter, especially after his face goes dark again. At least, when he tries to make it.
Before you can stop yourself, you're giggling like a maniac; you have to hold his shoulders to steady yourself as you laugh into his shoulder, eyes never leaving his image in the mirror. He watches you with a look of 'seriously?' etched onto him, but you watch as a grin grows on his face as well. It warms your heart through the incessant laughter.
"You look great, Cross," You tell him, making eye contact through the mirror. You plant a sweet, lovey kiss on his temple and return to his eyes, resting your chin on his shoulder. It seems that the grin that wants to spread over your face can't contain itself anymore. "True fashion icon."
Crosshair finally lets his resolve to break a little, eyes fluttering downward as he chuckles to himself, head shaking slowly before gazing up at you again.
"You're childish," He barks, but doesn't dare bite.
You grin again and ruffle the back hairs playfully.
"But you love me."
"Don't get your hopes up," He responds a little too fast to be believable. You raise a suspicious eyebrow but shrug and chuckle.
"Too late," You respond pepped up. "Would you wear them for the rest of the night?" He's met with your undeniable puppy dog stare in the mirror. "Pleeeease?"
He grumbles as though you don't already know you're his soft spot.
"...Fine."

"Bright" vs "Dark" Plants, The Poison Path, and The Need To Stop Being Edgelords About It All
It is forever obnoxious to me, when dealing with materials pertaining to the Poison Path, that there is always an air of completely unnecessary edginess about the nature of the plants. Particularly in regards to their “dual nature”.
The most recent example I’ve encountered comes (yet again) from 'The Poison Path Herbal: Baneful Herbs, Medicinal Nightshades, and Ritual Entheogens', when Mr. Michael says:
[Baneful Herbs] are the tricksters and shapeshifters of the plant world. They can act as both poison and panacea and teach us about boundaries and limitations that we would otherwise not approach.
The statement is certainly not untrue. In fact, he’s completely correct. However? It contains, overall, a symptom of a much larger mentality I encounter often along the Poison Path, and among those who write about it and practice its supposed virtues. One which has traveled beyond the realm of annoying, and which I wish I could chuck in the gutter and never see again.
It’s an obnoxious statement specifically because those on the Poison Path, whether they realize it’s what they’re doing or not, always act as if it is only Baneful Herbs which have such a dual nature- which is where the unnecessary edginess rears its ugly head ... Yet in actual reality? All plants (or at least nearly all, anyways; there are always exceptions to the rule) are dual natured in this way; the so called “Healing Herbs” of the world are no different than the so called “Baneful” ones in being capable of inflicting harm and trickery.
⇝ Take Iris, for instance. It has been long used as a Diuretic, as a remedy for Bronchitis, and as a Laxative for Constipation. The dried root of Iris Germanica var Florentina is specifically known as Orris Root- which most would recognize as a common ingredient in perfumes, incenses, potpourris, and other aromatic products. And yet Iris is well known to be toxic- causing vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, severe stomach pain, convulsions, and even liver, kidney, and even spleen failure if used incorrectly.
⇝ Comfrey, which I planted in my own garden last year as part of an experiment in natural fertilizer moving forward, has also long since been used as both an internal and external expectorant, astringent, and demulcent. Modern trials especially have shown it acutely beneficial in the topical treatment of joint pain, inflammation, myalgia, degenerative arthritis, and more- but only if the native Pyrrolizidine Alkaloids are removed from any such concoction made with Comfrey, because as it turns out, such a once widely used and beneficial healing herb is actually toxic; capable of causing a form of liver disease that can only be diagnosed through a postmortem liver biopsy, through accumulative consumption of even the smallest amounts- whether that “consumption” is through internal or external usage of any kind of preparation.
⇝ Coltsfoot has been found to contain these same accumulative Alkaloids. As does every member of the Heliotropium genus- another common aromatic- that has been tested so far (out of 325 species in total). Hemp Agrimony (Eupatorium Cannabinum) is also among them. As are many, many others.
And this is but a small smattering of blatant examples of Healing Herbs which are perfectly capable of trickery, and which contain an inherent multiplicity and duality. There are thousands more- more than one could possibly ever even list.
The true difference between "Baneful" and "Healing" plants? Is in the fact that the Baneful is so called because they harm more often than they heal; Baneful Herbs require an incredibly skilled and carefully studied hand in order to use them properly without hurting someone- and so it is much easier to harm people with them even when it’s their healing nature which is being sought out. As a result, many have developed “opposite associations”, and become taboo in cultural mythology and folklore around the world- becoming deeply associated with more “negative” figures and deeds, compared to the often “holier” and more elevated folklore and associations that develop around Healing Herbs.
But this dichotomy does not actually mean that there exists between them any true divide which makes Baneful dual natured and Healing single natured, or somehow removes the ability for Healing herbs to be equally as capable of trickery and deceit as their Baneful counterparts. And frankly, with as much herbal knowledge as many people on the Poison Path promote themselves as possessing? You would honestly think they'd not only know this, but also genuinely understand it.
It seems, however, that they are wrapped up in too much of their own egotism and desire to be edgy, and too focused on the “bad boy” image of Baneful Allies to listen to their brighter counterparts. Which is disappointing, as the age old adage clearly instructs us that “To Heal you must also know to Poison- for both are two sides of the same coin”. And so you would think, truly, that the door of understanding would swing both ways. But apparently the wisdom does not.

My adventures wild harvesting American white water lilies (nymphaea odorata) this summer for medicine and magic. Nymphaea odorata is native to North America and our local counterpart to blue lotus (aka blue water lily). It is used in Native American medicine to treat coughs, colds, and swelling. Prehistoric Native Americans associated them with purification, the underworld, and the moon.
You can dry and smoke the flowers or make medicinal syrups, tinctures, oils, and ointments with the roots and flowers. Water lilies are not a strong psychoactive. They need to be prepared similarly to lactucarium to make a concentrated extract like the blue lotus resins sold in head shops. That’s not what Bane Folk is about though (plus payment processors ban head shops). I focus on the medicinal uses of poisonous plants with special attention to ones that help with pain, sleep, anxiety, and depression. Water lilies fit that description perfectly.
Water lilies are sedative, hypnotic, anti-inflammatory (especially of mucous membranes and internal tissue), mildly pain relieving, anti anxiety, antibacterial, astringent, and demulcent.

Does Slippery Elm Really Do What The Girls Say?
The TikTok girlies might be on to something...

All the women of the land want to claim they have that ill na na, that WAP and as you can see by the timeless colloquialisms this is nothing new. The reality is that not every woman has it and I’m not saying that to shame, I’m actually saying that to normalize and minimize the shame that is seemingly around the subject matter because there are physical and mental reasons why vaginal drynessmight occur. This is not me saying that you should settle for “it is what it is” but quite the opposite. Instead, know that you’re not alone and that in some cases there is work that can be done, physicians and sex therapists who might be able to help you learn ways to increase vaginal “wetness” or lubrication, or the cause of vaginal dystrophy or dryness as it can be several factors, from stress to menopause and SO *claps* MUCH *claps* MORE *claps*. 
One thing that has piqued my cat-like curiosity is the girlies of TikTok saying that slippery elm bark, a plant that works as a demulcent, was the secret ingredient to getting macaroni-in-a-pot gushy. In fact, slippery elm bark has caused an increase in sales according to John Frigo, trainer, registered dietitian, and product specialist with Best Price Nutrition. He also adds that they can typically pinpoint TikTok as the culprit when these sorts of things begin to trend yet this time it happens to hold some truth. Frigo's exact words were, “Slippery elm bark seems to increase the mucilage tissues in our bodies which includes vaginal tissue. While no studies have been done on this anecdotally there seems to be a consensus that after about a week of use women begin to experience a noticeable difference.”
I spoke with two other experts who believe it is likely that slippery elm bark could work to increase wetness based on the product's mechanism. They also agree that it wouldn’t be their first line of defense when it comes to increasing your “sauce” as Rihanna once referred to it as. Making this the perfect segue because we want to know all the things anyways!

Before deferring to slippery elm as your vaginal wetness hack, the two experts have some suggestions to try in order to increase vaginal lubrication.
1. Balance Your Vaginal pH
Among other factors that can create vaginal dryness, your pH balance is one of them. Your pH balance plays an important role in the overall health of your vagina. For your vaginal pH to be considered balanced, it needs to fall between the 3.8 to 4.5 range. Having a pH balance that is too high (over 4.5) is the perfect breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria to flourish and increases your risk for infections like BV. In order to correct an unbalanced pH, you can implement habits like taking probiotics, staying hydrated, and improving your diet. 
Dr. Erica Steele, board-certified naturopathic doctor and certified functional medicine practitioner explains, “The digestive system has a symbiotic relationship with the female reproductive system so cleaning up the digestive system is very important to create a healthy and balanced vaginal canal. Lowering fat in the diet, increasing protein as well as improving the microbiology of the digestive system, specifically, the liver is key to ensuring a healthy vaginal canal.”
2. Vaginal Moisturizers
Vaginal moisturizers can be a very effective way to treat vaginal dryness. The over-the-counter remedy can be found in both gel and suppository form and use hyaluronic acid to hydrate vaginal cells and therefore moisturize the vagina. This differs from lubricantsbecause vaginal moisturizers can alter vaginal tissues whereas lubricants just add a lubricated barrier to reduce tears that may stem from the friction created by intercourse. Furthermore, vaginal moisturizers are most effective when used regularly as most products suggest twice-a-week application. And like most skin care products, the more consistently you use it, the better the results. If you are looking for vaginal moisturizers to try, Healthline provided a great list of the best vaginal moisturizers of 2022 and you can find that here. 
3. Vaginal DHEA
Another non-hormonal option that can be used to treat vaginal atrophy is vaginal dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). This treatment is most often used by postmenopausal women to improve sexual function and increase vaginal wetness that naturally reduces as women get older. Kim Vopni, who is known as the Vagina Coach, says, "Vaginal DHEA is a non-hormonal cream that can help with the conversion of estrogen and testosterone. Estrogen is a big part of a healthy vagina and as we age and produce less estrogen, the walls of the vagina thin and become drier." Vopni recommends Julva Vulva Rejuvenating Cream as a personal favorite. 
4. Do Pelvic Floor Exercises
In addition to the other options listed as ways to address dryness, consider working out! No, not in the gym. Vopni suggests doing pelvic floor exercises. She adds, "Kegelsare a commonly known form of pelvic floor exercise that, when done correctly, can help increase blood flow and circulation to the vagina and can help with lubrication. An at-home device called the vFit by Joylux has also been shown to increase lubrication, among other benefits.”
While it is a relief to know that TikTokers weren’t pulling slippery elm out of their bag of tricks and deception (since it is hit or miss), it’s wonderful to know that there are other approaches than can be taken before purchasing slippery elm. And generally speaking, options!
