nothing recently has prompted this but i find it weird how some people in this fandom are SO against the idea of saiki as a disabled character
like i know the "implications" are unintentional but nobodys trying to say they are, its just that its a really interesting way of reading his character, and its not even close to far fetched nor does it clash with any of his lore 😭 ive seen people try to be like "him using a wheelchair without his limiters means nothing since he can walk without them, its just that he would destroy everything if he did" okay so... tell me you know nothing about disabled people without telling me?? not all wheelchair users are entirely physically incapable of standing or walking, there are plenty of people who have something that hinders their ability to walk without taking it away entirely... yknow who fits that description?? saiki 😭
you obviously dont have to see him as disabled... but its a valid reading of his character

it's been said before and it'll be said again but the narrative that disabled people with long term chronic illnesses need to just get over it and get used to being in pain is deeply frustrating while temporary illnesses are often (though of course not always) given more leniency & support just because those illnesses are abnormal and will usually get better. like i had a cold all last week and felt a little bit shit but aside from blowing my nose a lot and being a bit more sleepy – i was perfectly functional, didn't need any help or support, and barely noticed i was sick. but today i'm sick with migraine which i routinely get several of a month and hurt my thumb pretty badly because of my joint problems and there's none of the "just take it easy and rest!" or "is there anything i can do to help?" or anything that's usually offered when i have the sort of viral illnesses that able-bodied people can relate to. when in reality – having a headache so bad that it's difficult to think and gets worse when i do literally anything and my thumb joint being too unstable to use is much more disabling than any cold symptom i've ever experienced.
it's such a sharp divide and it really fucking sucks that just because pain is chronic, suddenly a lot of people assume that it means it's easier to deal with or not as big of a deal when in my experience it's the exact opposite.

accessibility isnt childlike. someone in a wheelchair or some other type of mobility aid is not childlike. if to you, anyone on eyelevel of children is childlike then check your ableism

people with tooth decay aren't bad people. they aren't lazy either. neither are they unclean or irresponsible. tooth decay doesn't make you a bad person. you don't deserve mockery, judgement, or tooth pain for having any. the only thing people with tooth decay deserve is healthcare.

Can we stop using "still lives with their parents" or "unemployed" or "doesn't have a drivers license" or "didn't graduate high school" as an insult or evidence that someone is a bad person? Struggling with independence or meeting milestones is not a moral failing.

Her name is Valentina Petrillo and she is a visually-impaired sprinter.
Time to support her, because even without the racism element I expect she will be getting some flak from Awful, Awful People.
