A Bolstered Look at the Jasmine's Costumes in Disney's Aladdin (1992)
Jasmine has an uh interesting costume style. Let's talk about it.
First off, there is a lot of Orientalism going on in these designs. Watch this video for more information about that. So, instead, I'm mainly going to stick to discussing how her costumes relate to the plot of this movie and to what other princesses wore.
Tumblr media
Here is the standard outfit she wears. The color is quite striking and integrates a number of touches that are historically considered "Oriental." Opulence is the aesthetic of royalty, and even if the outfit doesn't have the expected embroidery or beadwork, it certainly fits in with her surroundings and princess-status. She's wearing a lot more jewelry than we've seen before and even has gold shoes!
Female Representation: 8/10 Because of the demographics, I'm going to look at this from the viewpoint of costumes for little girls (so I don't mean to imply that any of this is improper for an adult or Jasmine herself to wear). But this one shows a lot of skin and most costumes for sale have fabric covering up at least the midriff. While the other ladies in the movie wear the same amount of clothes (or less!), the design is going to be construed as a bit more sexualized than the other princesses. However, the pants are opaque and she is never animated in an objectifying way in this outfit, so it's not bad.
Practicality: 8/10 Other than the danger of a sun burn, it's a fairly practical outfit. The pants would keep her cool and be easy to move around in, the top obviously wouldn't be in the way, either. No sweeping sleeves here like her predecessors.
Tumblr media
This is what she wears when she goes to the market. Presumably she is wearing her blue outfit under it, since we see parts of it whenever her hood comes down. This is a good disguise because it is quite plain and unadorned. People notice her because she's a pretty lady, but don't seem to pick up on her as a potentially wealthy patroness.
Female Representation: 8/10 She's covered up, but still looks fairly feminine. Her hood acts like her hair would and the rest is more figure-hugging (affectionate) than one might expect. I'm docking points for it being boring, though (clothes don't have to be boring to be good rep, and who would want to wear this costume?)
Practicality: 10/10 Presumably the most practical thing she's worn. Keeps the sun off, obviously practical as a disguise, probably is flowy and breathable enough to not be too hot.
Tumblr media
She wears this briefly for her engagement announcement. The color is more romantic than her teal outfit, which makes sense for the context. It looks somewhat more traditional for a Disney Princess(tm) (many of the merch chooses this instead of her other one) because it is a dress with flowy sleeves. It's clearly a fancier outfit than she was wearing before, since it has another jewel and is more adorned (the overskirt and the neckline).
Female Representation: 9/10 So the bare shoulders are a bit scandalous, but otherwise this is an excellent costume for little girls. It's very pretty and would be fun to twirl around in!
Practicality: 9/10 It's impossible to tell what kind of fabric it is (could be equally as delicate as her teal outfit, who knows), but in terms of coverage, it's fairly practical. Less danger of a sunburn, probably pretty easy to move around in, despite being a skirt instead of pants.
Tumblr media
So I rant about this bit A LOT in my video but anyway this is what she's wearing while under Jafar's control at the end. Specifically, when she's about to kiss him as a distraction. So it is clearly meant to be objectifying in-universe and anyway I would like it (she looks great in red and it's my favorite color) except for the circumstances make me uncomfortable with it.
Female Representation: -1000/10 Your mileage will vary on how you see it, but I think this would be a bad costume to make for little girls. It would at least raise some eyebrows. And, not to kink-shame, but kind of for adults too. Lots of consent issues here and maybe we don't need to cosplay that (at least in public).
Practicality: 7/10 More sunburn likelihood than her usual outfit, otherwise fine I guess.
Tumblr media
We don't get a good look at this outfit, since it's just the final part of the movie as the fireworks go off. First, it's likely supposed to represent their wedding outfits at least when it was released (I know the sequels made the wedding more of a big deal and put it at the end of the third movie, but Aladdin's outfit in particular and the fact that these movies usually end in a wedding make me think that's the case here). Anyway, this is also very similar to her engagement announcement outfit, just with a few differences. I would guess this one is pants instead of a skirt because of the bare midriff, but it's hard to tell.
Female Representation: 8/10 Pretty much the same as her first outfit in terms of costumes, except this one would be more fun to wear because it's prettier/more complex.
Practicality: 9/10 Hard to tell for certain, but it seems at least as practical as her teal outfit but with less danger of sunburn.

Rant incoming
I feel like the problem with a lot of Disney's live action remakes (and arguably Wish) is they're trying to appeal to a crowd that no longer exists, namely the people who used to claim that the Disney Princesses were sexist.
All the interviews tend to include, "Well she's not chasing a MAN anymore" which...almost no one sees the princesses like that, anymore. Virtually NO ONE still believes the princesses are man-chasing sexist caricatures of women.
Cinderella is now hailed as an abuse victim who stayed strong long enough to get help to get out of her situation. Anyone who says she should have saved herself is basically regarded as a victim blamer. And it's very clear in the film she wasn't looking to marry the prince, she just wanted a night off. She was the only one who wasn't in line to meet him. She didn't find out she met the prince until he went looking for her!
Snow White is now hailed for her negotiation skills, ability to calm down after extreme stress (she had a moment of panic and had to cry for a bit, but who wouldn't after finding out The Queen hired someone to kill you?), and ability to take charge of a house of adult men. And again, she was an abuse victim, this time trying to escape ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS. While she dreamed of her prince, it was secondary to her main goal of SURVIVAL. There are also entire video essays about how Snow White gave hope to people during The Great Depression.
Everyone acknowledges that Ariel wanted to be human BEFORE meeting Eric. We all know she was a nerd hyperfixating on humans, and also standing up to her prejudiced father.
We understand Sleeping Beauty wasn't the main character, the Three Good Fairies were, AND PHILLIP WOULD NEVER HAVE BEATEN MALEFICENT WITHOUT THEM! He literally depended on them! WOMEN SAVED THE DAY! But even then, is it really such a sin for a girl to fantasize about romance and fall for someone with corny pickup lines?
We all understand Jasmine just wanted someone to treat her LIKE A PERSON. She rejected every Prince before Aladdin because they treated her like a prize. So why did they need her to want to be Sultan? How did that make her more feminist when she already wanted to be treated like an equal and have a say in her future? Is it only empowering if you want a career in politics?
We admire that Belle, despite living in a judgemental village, was kind to everyone (even though she found the village life dull), and her story teaches girls that the guy everyone else loves isn't always a good guy. What's sexist about teaching girls about red flags? And she didn't start being nice to The Beast until he started treating her with respect and kindness.
Do I really NEED to defend Mulan or Tiana? I think they speak for themselves.
Rapunzel was yet another abuse victim who just needed a little help to get out of her bad situation. In this case, she also needed to learn that she was an abuse victim, and that what Mother Gothel did WASN'T normal, much like many victims of gaslighting.
And don't get me started on the non-princess animals.
Perdita had a healthy relationship with Pongo to the point she was open to express her pregnancy fears to him, and was ready to TEAR APART Cruella's goons for daring to touch her puppies as well as adopting the other puppies. Like, she was so ferocious the goons mistook her for a hyena! She's basically that "I AM THAT GIRL'S MOTHER!" scene from SpyXFamily if Yor were a dog. She and her husband were a TEAM.....but they made a Cruella live action to turn her into a girlboss?! The literal animal abuser!? THAT'S the woman you wanted to put on a pedestal when Perdita was RIGHT THERE!?
Duchess kept her kittens calm after they had been catnapped and was classy as heck. Nice to everyone regardless of social class during a time period where that was uncommon.
Lady stood up to Tramp when she believed he had abandoned her and didn't really care about her. She found out he was a heartbreaker and was like, "Nuh uh. No. You are not doing that to me! You put me through enough."
Miss Bianca from The Rescuers was IN CHARGE the whole movie, and was willing to risk life and limb to save an innocent child. THAT TINY MOUSE TOOK ON ALLIGATORS! And she picked Bernard to accompany her because he was the only one who wasn't ogling her. And then in the sequel SHE DID IT ALL AGAIN! I wish I were as brave as her.
Like, the public haven't accused these ladies of being sexist caricatures since 2014 (Actresses and actors don't count, they're out of touch like the rest of Hollywood) yet Disney is operating under the assumption that the public still thinks that way, hence all the "sHe'S nOt AfTeR a MaN iN ThIs VeRsIOn" talk.
The live action remakes are trying to attract an audience that doesn't really exist much, anymore, and back when it did exist, was comprised mainly of people who didn't actually watch the films. The Disney princesses are no longer seen as sexist, and feminine qualities are no longer seen as weak or undesirable.

"I think the saddest people always try their hardest to make people happy because they know what it's like to feel absolutely worthless, and they don't want anyone else to feel like that."
This quote from Robin Williams has always stuck with me.
There's a reason I mostly make cute, wholesome art, even when things are dark and I'm crumbling inside. Its because I love making you all smile. And I hope you never have to feel as sad as I do.

Disney doesn't need to change "the formula." That's the last thing that Wish proves.
What Wish proves is that "the formula" only works when you know why the ingredients are in it, and you use them the correct way.
The Princess Character is meant to wish for only half of the movie's message, and go through an adventure that teaches her what the other half is; what her dream was missing. Ariel dreamed of understanding but she was missing love. Tiana dreamed of achieving her goals but she was missing faith. Jasmine dreamed of freedom but she was missing trust. Belle dreamed of adventure but she was missing being understood.
The Villain is meant to highlight the opposite of the movie's message. Jafar gets what he wants through trickery and manipulation; that's the opposite of Aladdin's "truth will set you free" message, and he gets imprisoned in a lamp. Scar thinks being a King is having his way all the time and can't learn from his past of living in Mufasa's shadow; that's the opposite of The Lion King's "Let the past remind you of your responsibility to selflessness." Gaston loves only himself and is always obsessed with appearances; that's the opposite of Beauty & the Beast's "true love is found within a heart of self-sacrifice." That's what makes them such good villains. (and that clear direction is what drives good villain songs, since Magnifico's is what everyone is talking about)
The sidekick is supposed to compare/contrast with the main character's qualities. Abu is a greedy thief, which is what everyone in Agrabah thinks Aladdin is; when he scolds Abu and teaches him selflessness, it shows us who Aladdin actually is. Flounder is easily frightened and looks at the glass half-full; when Ariel coaxes him and leads by example, we see her bravery and positivity reflected in Flounder's tiny character arc. Timon & Pumbaa do whatever they want all day just like young Simba always dreamed of; when Simba goes to live with them, he finds that "getting his way all the time" makes him forget who he really is and feel empty.
The setting is supposed to show off the characters and highlight the movie's message. Rapunzel's tower is designed to be pretty on the inside because of her influence; if it were too dark and prison-shaped, we'd wonder why she didn't work up the courage to leave sooner. Just like how Quasimodo has made his corner of the bell-tower beautiful, too; they're taught the world is cruel and they're not strong enough for it, but they make their own worlds beautiful enough to hint that that's wrong right from the start. Ariel's grotto is shaped like a tower with no roof so that she only has one window to the forbidden Surface, and it's the light that comes from that forbidden world into her dark grotto which literally makes her able to see human things differently. Tiana's apartment has no interesting features except her father's picture, a perfectly made bed, a drawer with no extra outfits but stuffed with tip money, and only two dresses; both of which are for work.
None of that is happening in Wish, because they didn't know why the formula ingredients are there. Disney needs to understand and return to the formula the right way; forgetting it was what got them here.
Asha learns nothing to add to her dream, unless you count "the power to grant wishes is in me." Which you shouldn't, because we didn't even know she was confused about that until the animals sang a song that was completely off-topic and she had the chance to jump in and sing "I'm a Star!"
Magnifico does not demonstrate the opposite of Wish's message effectively because his character has nothing to do with a philosophy against making wishes, and everything to do with power. (He is the strongest character in the film. But because the message and core concept of what wishes are are so bad, that's not saying much.)
Valentino, and Asha's friends, do not highlight anything about her character through compare/contrast. Valentino is brave and all over the place. Her friends are seven-dwarfs parodies. Happy, Doc, Sneezy, Dopey, Bashful, Sleepy, Grumpy. None of that contrasts with Asha's vague characterization of "cares too much." None of it compares to that characterization, either.
The setting is empty. There are no interesting details that teach you something about any of the characters. None in Asha's home, none in the neat-and-tidy one-dimensional forest, none in the Rosas square, and none in the bland, empty castle. Magnifico's study is the closest anything gets; there's a loose concept that all of Asha's friends have to work together to open the roof, and take a leap of faith to weigh the pulley system down. Unfortunately, none of these characters is shown struggling to work together, OR to take leaps of faith, at all, before this point.
The ingredients of the formula are in Wish. They're just not being used correctly. This is how not to use the formula; it's not the formulas fault. If it ain't broke. They should never have let people convince them to try and fix it.
