Biodegradable witchcraft ideas
When it comes to witchcraft, one of the things many people will tell you is to be creative in what you use, that almost anything can be used for craft work.
Occasionally I will see posts or read spell ideas that involve burying/deposing of items to nature that don't break down (e.g glass jars, pins, nails, etc). I understand the intent behind the action, but part of me can't help but cringe at the potential environmental impact. Now, I want to preferences this by saying I am not judging or calling out anyone's or group's practices, everyone has their own ways of doing things.
This is just part of my personal opinion and practice not to leave behind items that can't be reclaimed by the earth unless you intend to retrieve them at a later date.
Because of this, I wanted to discuss some of the alternatives I have turned to using (It's not a very long list though...) if I want to leave a spell out in nature or just in my general work, as well as leave the floor open for other ideas.
CW: I do talk about the use of animal parts.
Item: Pins and nails
Alternative: Thorns from spiky plants or even sharpened sticks.
An unusual item that I have access to thanks to my job is prawn (or shrimp) spikes- if you have even been pricked by one of those you know how painful they can be).
Item: Thread for bindings
Alternative: Long grass (weaved or weaved), or vines. Especially for bindings, picture the target being caught up and tangled in long grass, or a vine like a strangler fig.
Another idea for bindings are grass burrs or sticky grass seeds that are near impossible (and sometimes painful) to remove. Though, if you do use those, be careful not to spread the seeds to places where those plants don't actually grow, the last thing you want is to accidentally spread them to your yard.
Something else that I have access to which again is a bit unusual are squid teeth (small rings of sharp teeth that line each of their suckers and aid in gripping their prey)- good for binding a spell to a target or item.
Item: Spell pouches or jars
Alternative: Shells (especially deep ones like snail or oyster shells) and wax (bee's wax if the item is being left in nature). I am pretty sure I have seen this idea used before within witchlr, but I can't exactly remember. Essentially, you place the herbs and other items within the shell then seal it up with wax.
That's all I have at the moment of alternative item ideas, I'll update this if I have any more. I would also love to hear any suggestions others might have.
