2023 Year-End Fic Round Up

New things I tried: I tried writing again after a very long time :) Seems to work.

Fic I spent the most time on: Definitely The loneliest Hour, which didn't quite make it to the finishing line last year. But, alas, only one chapter to go ^^

Fic I spent the least time on: Any of the flash fics. Most of them were written in, like, one or two hours.

Favourite thing I wrote: The loneliest Hour.

Favourite thing I read: Gah. Do I have to pick one? Because it's a tie between Phoenix by @mallaidhsomo and Fugue by @swaps55

Writing goals for next year: I want to try and keep my eyes on ONE project at a time, and not 43897. That would be cool

Hello, love! I'm sorry this took me ages but, eh, life and stuff. But thank you so much for this ask! I've had so much fun answering these.

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year Tricky tricky tbh. I think that my favourite scene I wrote all year was Sirius and Remus in the kitchen in Nightmares. It's one that I keep coming back to. A snippet:

“I’m making some eggs, you hungry?” Sirius looks up and Remus can tell he’s been far gone in the moment of silence. It takes a while for his eyes to refocus on Remus, but then there’s an almost-smile, a hint of something that Remus recognises, that takes him back to crisp winter nights in the Scottish Highlands, to star-studded skies by the Great Lake, to the cool dampness of Hogwarts and the smell of an open fire in Gryffindor Tower. It's gone as soon as it came, only the feeling of it lingering somewhere in Remus’ chest, igniting a small flame in his chest. “Yes please,” Sirius says, as if they hadn’t just travelled through time together, as if Remus wasn’t still reeling from it. “Okay,” he replies, as if he wasn’t floating, soaring. “Okay”, he repeats as he’s landed again, back in a too small kitchen in a run-down cottage somewhere in Yorkshire. “I’ll tell you,” Sirius says after a while, and when Remus turns to look at him his expression is serious but determined, his voice not wavering. “About the nightmares. If you want.”

15. something you learned this year I answered this here, but another thing I learnt is that I truly can write 50k+ in a month and that is a lot of words and I'm very proud.

I did not reread as much as I wanted to (there are some books on my shelves that I cannot remember anything about except for "liked it") but I managed a few (not counting the audiobooks I have on repeat for calming effects):

T. Rammstedt - Der Kaiser von China (strange, enjoyable)

C. Agra Deedy, R. Wright - The Cheshire Cheese cat ( cute children's book)

L. Bargudo - Shadow and Bone (still enjoyable)

T. Pierce - Magic steps (still great)

T. Dragt - Die Türme des Februar (better in my memory)

K. Tordasi - Brombeerfuchs 1 (still great - has also been translated into English)

B. Stoker - Dracula (much better due to Dracula Daily)

6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to?

I really wanted to start Maggie Stiefvater's Dreamer trilogy. Well, I have something to look foward next year.

M. Meta! Have any meta about a story you’re dying to throw out there?

Alright. There's so much I'm always dying to share... so buckle up!

The main references for the authoritarianism in the Tower in Safe was inspired by Brazilian's dictatorship and current fascist ideas that were spreading in the country in the past decade;

The series Desire&Decorum&Zombies, which is a gothic/supernatural AU, was written in first person POV as an exercise and the initial monologue was inspired by the opening lines in Dom Casmurro, a book by Machado de Assis;

In this series the MC is named Catherine after Catherine Morland, the heroine of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey. But unlike her, this Catherine is not naive and won't be fooled by appearance. There's a lot in this story still undefined, including the LI. It's a gothic romance and the initial plan was to go for a different LI, Luke Harper, but as soon as I start writing Prince Hamid this determination faltered 🫣

Speaking of Hamid, I have a few AUs where he's also paired with Elizabeth, and even though many things change, including age, professions and time period, I always try to keep some references to his speech pattern, like his usually someone wordy and his lines can be longer than other characters, and he's a storyteller and the romanticism from canon is always present too.

N. Anything you were planning to write that never got written?

Oh, my god! Soo many! There are a few AUs from Desire and Decorum that are just rough drafts, a collab that haven't progressed in many months, and this one Blades fic that I was supposed to submit to one of @musicallisto's events many summers ago (😳🫣) that just got completely out of control, involving too many complex ideas, very little time and I've never got the chance to go back and try to fix all the plot holes and issues, which was a bummer because this AU got me so hyped when I came up with the idea. Maybe one day...

Not really? I read some books out of my comfort zone, and it won't be the last time, but I don't feel like I really got particularly into anything new.

Actually am still kinda pissed that my fiancé's psychatrist evaluated him for anxiety and said he didn't have it but then was like "in the future I'd like to see you make enough progress with your anxiety that you feel comfortable taking your mask(N95 not neurodivergent mask) off" and didn't seem to care when he explained that his fiancé(me) has several severe chronic illnesses and immune issues so we both do what we can to ensure I don't get sick with any illness, not just covid. Like does he have anxiety or not?? You can't have it both ways buddy!! And like it or not protecting a vulnerable person from getting sick is logical, YOU'RE the one being irrational here.

Like this is why I get pissed about mask(N95) stuff, people have legit fallen into some kind of thought-terminating cliché about covid and all other contagious diseases not being a problem anymore to the point that they think even sick people and their loved ones taking reasonable precautions to protect their health is a sign of anxiety and paranoia. I truly do not get it. Like it's one thing if you personally don't want to wear a mask(N95) but at least leave people who do alone, but legit acting like people like me are insane for doing something that makes perfect sense is turning me into the Joker. It doesn't even work to say "oh I have asthma and allergies and the air quality is bad today" or "I'm having an important surgery soon and need to make sure I don't get sick" like they think wearing a mask(N95) AT ALL in any circumstance for any reason means you've legit lost your mind.

I genuinely feel like the government suddenly started hiding all the national car crash statistics and insisted in tons of press conferences that crashing your car is actually perfectly fine and not a big deal at all and wearing a seatbelt isn't something healthy people need to worry about, so now everyone thinks it's silly to wear one and every time I do I have to deal with people implying or outright stating that I'm legitimately mentally ill and need an intervention.

You know those AU's where the Batfam finds or learns about either hidden or thought to be dead Al Ghul Danny! with a deaged/daughter Dani (Ellie) (I should know, I created a few of those storylines) but what if, now hear me out, what if instead of them finding Danny first its Talia.

Do I want Talia discovering her thought to be dead son to be alive? Yes. Do I want her to find him while investigating Amity Park when the League gets reports of 'Lazarus creatures/water'? Yes.

DO I WANT HER TO KNOCK ON THE FENTON'S DOOR, fully ready to pretend/honey talk her way into the house to uncover what the Fenton's know, ONLY TO MEET A LITTLE ELLIE?!

Ellie whose eyes and hair look like a copy of her Beloved but she can see bits and pieces of herself as well. Talia knows the child in front of her was not fully her's though but everything makes sense when she hears a voice, a voice she hasn't heard in ages but as a mother just knows, speak out.

"Ellie! I thought I said do not answer the door my Sterling."

"But Daddy, yous was busy fighting the hotdoggys!"

Talia's eyes widen when she finally catches sight of familiar black hair and blue eyes.

nbc hannibal is a romcom purely because the central conflict results from hannibal not understanding his feelings for will and being a total loser about it because he’s never had a friend or been in love before which makes him act so silly and do the most insane things that will interprets being framed for murder as hannibal having something against him (as anyone would), and this series of misunderstandings is not resolved until hannibal’s ex girlfriend and former psychiatrist tells will that hannibal is so in love with him it makes him look stupid. after that will does not hesitate to break hannibal out of jail and douse himself in blood which is this show’s equivalent to the protagonist running to the airport to stop their love interest from leaving the country and marrying someone else before they’ve had the chance to confess that they’ve loved them ever since they’ve known them

MDZS AU where Jiang Cheng realizes that Lan Sizhui is the Wen orphan that Wei Wuxian took care off during the Burial Mounds arc, decides that's close enough to qualify him as Nephew, declares that no Nephew of His (much less a surrogate son of Wei Wuxian's) is going to be raised in the Cloud Recedes, and immediately launches into a custody battle with Lan Wangji.

But since neither Jiang Cheng or Lan Wangji can acknowledge that Sizuhi has any connection to Wei Wuxian, both begin steadfastly and stubbornly insisting that he is a Cultivator of peerless potential and skill and he belongs in their sect thank you very much, and would clearly be very unhappy in the other's. This confuses the hell out of the already mystified Cultivation world, who had barely adjusted yet to gossiping about Sizhui being Wangji's illegitimate child by mysterious love affair.

(Eventually the common consensus in the rumor mills is that both JC and LW where in love with Sizhui's mother and both believe themselves to be Sizhui's real father.)

(LW couldn't care less what gossips say, but JC has to bite his tongue till it bleeds to avoid telling anyone the truth in a fit of anger.)

(It was Nie Huaisang who put that rumor out in the first place, partly to troll JC, partly because, in a way, it's a little true.)

V. Which story was the most viscerally pleasing to write? Tell us your narrative kinks. 

Hi, sweetie! Thanks for the ask!

Many stories I wrote were pleasing, however, right now, I'd say my Wake the Dead fics were it this year. I have no words to describe how much I enjoyed writing Safe, because I had the chance to work with a completely different setting and extreme situations of life and death and loss of references, and at the same time my imagination was free to create a lot when it came to worldbuilding and backstories for the characters. These were superpleasing, it was also like an escape valve, a coping mechanism to deal with so much going on in real life in these past years.

So, my narrative kinks? Where to even start? lol

Well, probably flourish and descriptions, I like creating metaphors and associations that work with particular characters and situations. Does it always work? No. But it's usually fun.
