friday recs!

So 2023 has been a little bit all over the place, but it is a friday, and I have recs of things I have consumed!

Film: 'Nope', Jordan Peel - it's a horror movie, but also very beautiful. Not like, sentimentally, literally, how it looked and sounded. The relationships were lovely too, and I liked a lot the Big Bad and how it grew (click here for Letterboxd)

Book: read it a while ago but it just been living rent free in my head, 'The Gustav Sonata' by Rose Tremain (click here for Storygraph link). I found it tender, with a robust story and well drawn characters. I liked that Gustav was the focaliser, while it was Anton who dragged the story forward. Very good and smart writing.

Podcast: I've been listening to 'Verity Weaver' (click here, link is to soundcloud), I don't know if it's finished, but I really like it. It's a bit dreamy, someone described it as like Doctor Who which I agree with but doctor who on a quiet day.

Podcast: 'Whichever Path' (click here for their website), a series of horror/supernatural short stories where the audience gets to pick from three options at the end of episodes. Really solid writing and acting, lovely sound design, creepy with strong characters, really good.

Podcast: 'OUTCAST UK' (they have a website, click here), queer news from the UK, I don't keep track I think it's weekly. It's chatty, easy to listen to, the hosts are good I think they're radio DJs.

Theatre: If anyone's in the UK, specifically around London in the autumn, I highly recommend 'The Night Woman' by Julene Robinson, in the Pit at the Barbican (click here for the Barbican page). I saw this I think about a year ago, I'm glad to see it's found another space. Really good music, storytelling, acting. I haven't seen much like it, it's very well written and very well done, and the way the stage and props and such are used is very impressive.

Everyone's Alive College/University 5+1 things fic featuring Charles bringing Edwin coffee and slowburn payneland. Also Family/Wedding Drama involving Everyone Thinks They're Dating so acute is verges on Fake Dating. This author is seriously fantastic, everything they write is gold.

You should also check out Kissing Lessons, which is a high school AU that does what it says on the tin while also giving non-binary Monty and polyamory.

Monty gets a job working at Tragic Mick's. This one's not actually payneland, being gen and Monty-centric. I know, gasp. It's a fantastic and very sweet exploration of Monty discovering his sense of self post canon and works as a great metaphor for recovery from toxic family/relationships. Also, the ex-animal solidarity and bonding with Mick is lovely.

what some circumstance stole by Chrome

The Sandman crossover featuring Edwin and Hob being kidnapped and tortured together. Their friendship is really wholesome with eventual Father Figure and Found Family Feels for the whole agency and background Dreamling.

dandelion wine (life and death in summertime) by world_wanderer

Payneland Right Person Wrong Time AU in which neither of them die but they still meet and become friends. The May/December friendship is sweet but tragic, with a bittersweet ending. Superb.

Charles' afterlife gets taken over my an evil shape-shifting doppelganger, leaving him with plenty of time to regret never talking to Edwin about his feelings. Angsty but with Feelings Realisation and the Power of Love and Friendship vibes.

Case fic with de-aged Charles! Baby Charles is precious but be prepared for discussions of childhood trauma/abuse.

The same author has also written I'm So Aces at Babysitting, which is a really cute two-chaptered AU featuring Charles and Edwin babysitting the kid versions of each other, with bonus Crystal and Niko doing the same. It's very wholesome and the author writes little kids really well.

College/University AU where the boys meet through a dating app. It's cute.

Again, it's the Friends with Benefits but with real feelings and mutual pining for me. Now has a Charles PoV companion fic.

True Love's Kiss by Asidian

In which Charles curses himself with a Sleeping Beauty enchantment in order to confirm his feelings for Edwin and Crystal is the real MVP. I love this one because the boys are both SO stupid but in very different in-character ways.

I also recommend Promised, in which they kind of play the Green card angle to keep Edwin out of Hell? Which honestly needs to be more of a trope. And Tight Quarters, starring the boys trapped in a magic circle, leading to Forced Proximity induced Feelings Realization (in more ways than one! 😉).

Something I Can Turn To by DontOffendTheBees

I love some domestic fluff, in this case as an Everyone's Alive/Childhood Friends AU in which the boys are poor but happy living together. I liked how they both survive their respective traumas, but Reality Ensues.

I also recommend Lived My Whole Life Before the First Light for a lovely but melancholy Soulmate AU that goes for the "seeing colours" trope for extra wistful angst.

Dining at the Ritz by TerresDeBrume

Meeting the Parents fic in which Edwin's parents are awful and Charles is Not Having It. This has Everyone Thinks They're Dating and autistic Edwin stimming representation, plus discussions of racism, classism and ableism. The fic is also part of a great Modern AU series in which the boys attended St Hilarion's at the same time and Charles saved Edwin from a non-supernatural but still almost deadly prank. Highly recommended!

The Case of the Couples Retreat by juliasfanart

Listen, I can't get enough of undercover fake dating/relationships at a couples retreat, OK? Some minor angst but overall very cute and fluffy.

The agency is hired to solve the mystery of Charles' death and bring his killers to justice. I'm genuinely obsessed with this series; I love its OCs and Charles having an exboyfriend gives Edwin a fun crisis. Plus haunting Charles' killers is very satisfying and cathartic. Just imagine they're Netflix execs, y'all.

Book: You Made a Fool of Death by Awaeke Emezi (on The Storygraph, click here). I listened to this audiobook, most of it while wandering around London, and I really liked it. I think the characters are so messy and intense, I liked this version of (slight spoilers) the trope where characters are so in lust they can't help but give in. Instead, in this one they choose, even though it's not necessarily the right choice, I like when characters choose things!

Book: The Colour Purple by Alice Walker (the audiobook version I have was recorded under the disabiltiy act specifically for Listening Books, click here for details, I like the narrator she's pretty good). I've read this book before, I read it with my eyes last time it's different listening. I've tried before to listen, the opening is very difficult to hear outloud. I think it's a really well crafted story, it goes without saying it's brilliant writing being Alice Walker, super worth re-visiting.

Book: not really a rec, but I'm reading Bleak House outloud to my grandma, a couple of chapters each time I visit, and I really recommend reading aloud together! It's so nice and warm and cosy, and a way to share time and space when we've seen each other too often to have much to say, or the world's too shite to talk over anymore. Charles Dicken's really leands himself to this if you can get over the sentence lengths.

An update, I am still working through Babel by R.F Kuang (don't judge me for reccing things I haven't finished you're all just cowards), I'm still enjoying it but it's dragging a bit and the characters seem to not be becoming, while the plot is too static, maybe it'll get on with itself soon.

YouTube: I've been watching things on Accented Cinema youtube (click here to go subscribe), super interesting! I know none of these things. Currently watching about Train to Busan sequel movies, I haven't watched any of these but I like the video essays.

Friday Fic Recs

The other week I started thinking about Merlin again, a show I watched as a teenager but didn't read any fanfiction for. Cue a nostalgia-driven decision to check some out. Today, I've got some Merlin/Arthur one shots with quiet moments arranged in ascending wordcount order.

To Face the Day by LadyAJ_13

Merlin is a terrible servant. He's never been taught how to be one... so of course he gets some things wrong. Arthur doesn't really mind. I really enjoy the quiet, oblivious care from Merlin. The switch to Arthur's POV only makes it even more effective and meaningful. I love seeing their respective thoughts about each other, especially at this point in their relationship. It's just very soft and good.

To say Camelot has been a culture shock is an understatement. I really like the atmosphere of Merlin and Arthur's relationship in this fic. The way they track each other. I also enjoy the description, it's evocative and effective. The conclusion is lovely and warm.

tell me what it’s like to conquer, tell me what it’s like to burn by stqrkolmes

A gentle story about what could have happened if Merlin and Arthur had left Camelot together. I love a lot of things about this fic. The tone is very effective, the journey and development is lovely. I love the care in their actions and words. A minor point perhaps, but I really appreciate the commitment to the premise and that the two of them leaving is not the end of everything. A wonderful look into a different story.

Dead Boy Detectives: Fic Recs

My latest hyperfixation is Dead Boy Detectives, so oc I've been reading and commenting on a ton of fic. And it's been really nice because the response of the authors has been so warm. I don't think I've ever gotten so many replies so quickly! Also, the fandom has inspired me to actually start writing again for the first time in two years and I've got a great idea for a fanvid. (Any tips on how to make one would be appreciated! 😅)

Edwin has a sexual awakening and it blows Charles' mind. And other things. Very funny and well written. Also features minor Edwin/Cat King and Edwardian flirting.

I also highly recommend the saviour of the broken, the beaten, and the damned by the same author, which is a kind of multiverse!Edwin fic? Featuring Edwin dying? And Niko time travelling? Trying to save time? Anyway, interesting to see Edwin alive, ageing and in different periods of time/his life.

For the First Time Twice by MmmCookies

Amnesia fic! Charles loses his memories and thinks he and Edwin are married. Very cute (tandem bike date!) and well written, though Edwin's point of view still manages to be angsty. Also, the yearning is off the charts and the most recent chapter turned up the heat.

AU in which Edwin and Charles actually got married pre-show. Funny, cute with a sweet marriage proposal prequel. Instant comfort fic.

Dance the Night by Gruoch

The gang are hunting an energy-sucking vampire that targets beautiful people, so naturally Edwin MUST disguise himself as the hottest girl in London. This one starts out fun and campy then takes a hard left turn into Serious Business. Prepare yourself for emotional moments, worldbuilding and some really excellent horror.

Long Past Time by sanctuary_for_all

Charles proposes to Edwin post canon. It's a short and sweet established relationship fic with some cool worldbuilding about ghosts and their ability to shape their clothing/appearances.

I had to include a PWP and this is a great one. Extremely well written, in character and romantic. And explicit, obviously.

Data Points by Asidian

Edwin learns to cuddle. It's a production and completely adorable. I love a fic that explores the difference between the boys' physicality and this one's really on point. The writing and characterisation are great and it's nice to see Edwin taking care of Charles.

I also recommend Lanterns In the Dark, which sets the scene for Charles and Edwin's first meeting with some gut-wrenching details about Charles' homelife and Edwin's escape from Hell.

When I Was a Young Boy by flowerbritts

A Good Omens crossover and AU in which Aziraphale is Edwin's adopted father. Family reunions and revelations abound. Also, Edwin gets to be a teenager and slam doors while shouting, as he deserves.

The author has also written Wait, I'm Coming Too, which is a very sweet post canon 'Charles Worries About Edwin and Realises His Feelings' fic inspired by that 'Edwin reading Heartstopper' fanart. Both fics deserve more love!

A Slight Miscalculation by kantigone

Idiots in Love and Didn't Know They Were Dating. Crystal and Niko are the real MVPs, for real. A treat.

Interesting demon!Edwin AU. Charles is a precious cupcake in this fic and Edwin is mostly the same with some Darker moments. I loved the concept and the author adds in some great, creepy details.

Edwin explores his sexuality and re-negotiates his relationship with Charles. Meanwhile, the gang take on the case of a ghost who wants them to matchmake his still-living lover. Crosses over with The Sandman. And Edwin gets to be confident and flirty as a treat.

Hurt/Comfort fic in which Edwin has a traumatic flashback to the doll-head demon spider and Charles looks after him. Charles reading Good Omens to Edwin is a nice, meta touch.

The agency are hunting an incubus that decides to take on Edwin's appearance. A repression explosion ensues. Fun fic.

Shape Me by dearheartdont

This one's actually a character study of Charles and his mixed race Indian heritage (so no Edwin) and it's so well done. It's also part of a series in progress about Charles growing up in the 80s with all the racism and homophobia that that entails. I look forward to seeing where it goes.

The Most Tender Place In My Heart by coloursflyaway

Edwin shares memories of how he fell in love with Charles, who figures out his own feelings in the process. It's super sweet and involves fun pre-show flashbacks and defintely deserves more attention!

I also loved Won't Fear Love by the same author, in which Charles takes Edwin out on dates and breaks the cuteness scales. And shout out to Good Enough which is the first fic I bookmarked for this fandom! 🥳
