Title: "Echoes of the Midnight Garden"
Chapter Title: "The Offering Beneath the Stars"
Page 2.
As Elara's fingers delicately brushed against the book's jeweled cover, the guardian of the night and stars, a luminous figure cloaked in the ethereal glow of moonlight, reached out with a gentle touch. With eyes that held the wisdom of ages, the guardian's presence enveloped Elara in a comforting embrace. "You have journeyed far, dear one," the guardian spoke, their voice a melodious echo resonating through the night. "Your offering speaks volumes of your inner strength and courage." With a tender smile, they accepted the book, their touch imbuing it with a shimmering aura of celestial energy.

Some people have asked me how Detective Fear and Thief Joy's first meeting would go, so here goes...
----
Detective Fear AU: Fear and the Thief
(about 2,000~ words)
His lungs were burning by the time he made it up the stairs. He huffed and puffed, leaning against the guard rail to steady himself. As he caught his breath, his lips curled into a smug smile. The thief had nowhere to run now. She was cornered.
He burst through the door and onto the roof, training his revolver on the shadowy figure. "All right!" he called out. "Put your h…ha…."
The words died in his throat as the thief pulled back her hood, exposing glowing, golden skin and a crop of short, shimmery blue hair. She wiped the back of her gloved hand across her forehead and checked her belt. Only then did she turn her head in his direction, her blue eyes wide and startled. And what beautiful eyes, like great pools of sapphire, filled with an entire galaxy of stars…
Fear and the thief stared each other down for several long moments. No sound could be heard but the brisk September wind sighing between the skyscrapers, and the far-off sounds of traffic, many floors below. A siren wailed in the distance.
Fear slowly lowered his gun, almost involuntarily. Threatening this blue-eyed beauty with violence suddenly seemed a tad extreme. At a glance, she seemed so sweet and pure, her skin's glow casting an angel's halo around her exposed head and neck. Surely somebody this lovely couldn't possibly be bad?
In his line of work, he had come into contact with all manner of criminals. Even the women, beautiful though they may have been, had an air of hostility or cruelty to them. But Fear couldn't detect even the slightest hint of malice in the thief's face or posture. She warily fixed him with her wide, innocent eyes, clearly on guard for his next move. Perhaps he could talk her down? He cleared his throat and opened his mouth.
"I… I… um."
His tongue refused to cooperate, tripping over itself as he stammered incoherently. The thief furrowed her brows and cocked her head to one side, scrutinizing him thoughtfully. Fear felt his face begin to heat up beneath her appraising stare. Well, it would have been a good idea, if I could actually talk…
A slow smile crossed the thief's pixie-like face, her lids lowering. She ran a hand through her sapphire locks and struck a pose, resting a palm on her cocked hip. Fear suddenly felt exposed as she looked him up and down. "Well, hi there, Inspector Cutie," she purred.
Fear glanced behind him uncertainly while trying to keep one eye trained on the glowing beauty before him.
"Yeah, I'm talkin' to you, handsome." The thief sauntered toward him, flaring her hips with each step. She grasped him by the tie and slowly smoothed it down. Fear sucked in a breath, his spine tingling at her feather-like touch. "Tell me, what's your name?"
"I-it's… I… buh..." Fear could only stammer and sputter, the heat beneath his collar quickly becoming unbearable.
"'Fear', huh?" Even the simple way she said his name sent his head spinning.
He frowned suddenly, his focus snapping to attention. "Wait. H… how did you…?"
The thief held up Fear's police badge with a smug grin. "It's on this."
Fear gaped. He hadn't even noticed her swipe it from his coat pocket. "H-hey, g-give that back!" he squeaked, with as much authority as the crack in his voice allowed. He made a grab for it, but the thief giggled and held it out of reach, taking a few steps backward.
"Well, since I know your name, I'll tell you mine," she offered. "It's Joy. Master Thief Joy. My card." She produced a small piece of cardboard from seemingly nowhere and flashed him a glimpse of flowery text surrounded by sparkle and flower patterns.
"Um…" was about all he could think to say in response. Why does a thief need a business card? he wondered.
She thrust the card at him and he took it, perusing the text. You have been hoodwinked by Master Thief Joy! Have a stupendous day!
"That's my calling card," she explained, as she examined something in her hand. "Hey, is this your girlfriend? Oh, I'm so jealous - she's very pretty…"
"Huh?!" Fear's head snapped upright. Joy was now holding his wallet, going through his personal family photos. His face reddened in frustration. "G-give me that!" he demanded.
He made an impressive lunge toward her and this time, managed to knock the wallet out of her grasp. Coins tinkled as they bounced to the asphalt and papers flew everywhere. Fear desperately scrabbled to collect all his paper money before the chill breeze blew it away. When he stood, puffing and panting, Joy still held onto the photograph she'd been looking at. She held it up casually.
"Your girlfriend?" she prompted, as if nothing had happened and they were having a perfectly normal rooftop conversation.
"N-no, th-that's my mom," Fear grumbled, red in the face as he hastily stuffed his cash and belongings back into the cramped confines of his wallet. "And hand it over!"
To his surprise, Joy obliged. "You two look very close. That's so sweet!" she cooed, clasping her hands together.
Fear drew back from her, squinting. "This is… this is a trick, isn't it? Y-you're just… t-trying to c-confuse me, or… or something."
"Is it working?" she asked, batting her lashes disarmingly.
Fear frowned at her. She'd just openly admitted to… whatever it was she was doing. He should be angry, but the twisting sensations in his stomach and the giddy, lightheaded dizziness that had started the moment he'd seen her face had him thoroughly distracted as he fought to keep a clear head.
His heart skipped a beat as he suddenly realized that his hands were empty. He patted himself down and looked around absent-mindedly. While he'd been fumbling around with his wallet, where had he put…?
With an awful premonition, he slowly turned his head to the thief, who, sure enough, held something black and shiny in her sticky fingers, turning it over and examining it thoughtfully.
His heart stopped. He broke out in a cold sweat as his life flashed before his eyes. He hadn't even noticed her swipe his revolver. He was a goner now for sure! He put his hands up and prepared to plead for his life…
… but instead of shooting him, she grasped it by the muzzle and handed it back to him, grip first. His hands shook with adrenaline as he buried it safely in its holster. Joy inclined her head to the gun.
"Ya know, those things are awful dangerous. Somebody could get hurt," she smiled innocently.
Fear took deep breaths to try and calm himself, almost hyperventilating. "N-n-nobody has to get hurt," he heard himself saying. He tried to reason with the thief: "L-listen, uh, w-would you maybe consider returning that diamond?" He pointed shakily at the pouch on her belt, where something glinted from within.
"Oh, this?" Joy looked down as if noticing the pouch for the first time. "Sorry, no can do."
"Then, uh…" He coughed apologetically. "I'm afraid you're going to have to come with me."
"As entertaining as that sounds, no." She smirked at him incredulously. "Are you saying you'd actually let me go if I gave it back?"
"Uh, well, I don't… actually have the authority to do that… I mean, we have a laundry list of your offenses… but I could talk to people, explain the situation," he offered.
Joy looked at him oddly for a moment, before a wide grin slowly spread across her face. She placed her hands on her hips. "Okay, 'fess up, Inspector. Why are you being so nice to me? Do you like me or something?" she teased.
"H…huh?" Fear found himself beginning to blush once more. "I… b-but I'm just… t-trying to do my job…"
"None of you police-types have ever actually given me a choice in the matter before," Joy mused. "It's always, 'You're coming with me' or 'Come out with your hands up'. But you…" Her eyes lit up, practically sparkling with delight. "Here you are, treating me like an actual person! You must be the sweetest detective I've ever met."
Fear couldn't help it. His face split into a silly grin before he could stop it. He quickly slapped his hand against his face and turned to try and hide how flustered he was, but his palm couldn't stop the spout of goofy giggling that escaped his lungs.
Joy laughed lightly in return. "Oh, you're a cute one, Mr. Detective. I think I'll keep my eye on you."
Fear fidgeted, wringing his tie in his hands and trying to fight down his bashful grin. "S-so… um… any chance of you… uh… cooperating with me? I-I'll m-make sure they treat you well…"
Joy suddenly seemed distracted, glancing skyward. "Oh, finally!" she burst out, her face lighting up in a relieved smile.
For the first time, Fear took notice of the massive shadow suddenly falling across the roof. He whirled, looking up so fast his head spun.
A dirigible hovered over them, engines whirring loudly. The wind whipped fiercely around them, prompting Fear to hold tight to his hat. He could just make out a length of rope dangling from a window of the gondola.
"Well, it's been fun, Inspector, but I gotta go," Joy declared, giving him one last playful smile. With her cloak streaming behind her like a banner, she hopped effortlessly onto the parapet and grabbed the rope, giving it two sharp tugs.
It took him a moment, but slowly his wits returned. "W-wait!" Fear cried out, belatedly giving chase. "Y-you can't leave now! I-I need that diamond!" He came to an abrupt halt as he slammed against the parapet, making a desperate grab for Joy's belt as she dangled freely from the edge of the building. She twisted easily out of his reach.
"Let's do this again sometime," she purred, swinging back around so she could stroke his chin with a single glowing fingertip. "And oh, don't look so glum. I'm sure we'll see each other again very soon!"
As the airship ponderously turned and floated away into the heavens, Joy clung to the rope. He thought he saw her blow him a kiss before she turned away. He watched her longingly, hardly able to breathe.
He watched until the airship was a mere speck on the horizon, then he watched some more. Slowly he let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding. Geez. What… what just happened…? He drew out Joy's calling card from his coat pocket, turning it over in his hand. You have been hoodwinked by Master Thief Joy! it read. "I'll say," he muttered to himself.
The door to the rooftop burst open with a bang. Fear jumped and whirled around, fully expecting to find trouble, but it was only Anger.
Anger's thick chest heaved as he stood in the doorway, glaring at Fear. "Well?" he panted. "Where is she?"
"She…" Fear stuffed the calling card hastily back into his coat pocket. "Sh-she… uh, she left."
"She's gone?" Anger demanded, dumbfounded. "You let her escape? How did she escape?!" He looked around, his scowl darkening dangerously. "There's nowhere to run! You had her right where you wanted her!" he yelled, throwing his arms wide. Fear shrugged helplessly with a nervous giggle.
"Seriously, how did you let her slip away?" Anger growled, stomping over to the edge of the roof.
Fear shrank away from him, intimidated. "Well, see, there was this airship…" he began uncertainly. "A-and it just kind of… swooped down out of nowhere, and then… she was gone."
"An airship?" Anger repeated incredulously. He narrowed his eyes and glanced to the sky. He clenched his teeth, the air above his head beginning to steam. "I don't see any airship."
"W-well, it was-- it was right there…" Fear stammered, pointing. "A-and a rope came down, and Miss Joy-- th-the thief grabbed onto the rope and sailed away."
Anger wiped his palm down his face in exasperation, muttering and grumbling. He took a deep breath, trying his level best to be patient. "Can I get a description of this magical, mythical airship?" Fear thought for a moment, then shook his head. "Did you happen to see who was driving the thing?" Anger prodded. Fear shook his head again, his face burning with humiliation.
"Do you know anything useful at all?!" Anger burst out, taking off his hat and throwing it to the ground, frustrated. He always did this when he got angry, partly because it just plain felt good, but mostly because whenever he lost his temper, the top of his head would burst into flames. Fear had lost count of all the hats Anger had burned to a crisp because he wasn't fast enough to fling them to the ground.
Fear tried desperately to think back to just a few minutes earlier, but he drew a blank. All he could see in his mind's eye was Joy: her face, the stars in her eyes, her teasing smile and long, supple legs…
"Fear? Earth to Fear?!"
Anger's voice snapped him out of his reverie. He became aware that his partner had grabbed him by the arms and was shaking him roughly.
Fear did his best to come up with an explanation, but he could only sigh heavily, his back drooping in defeat. "I… I'm sorry. I… I guess I just wasn't… fast enough."
"Our client isn't gonna like this," Anger rumbled, shooting Fear a dark look. "You'd best have a better explanation ready for when we get back to headquarters empty-handed." Fear winced with dread, knowing that Anger was right.
As he followed Anger down the stairs and out onto the busy street, Fear buried his hands deep in his pockets and scowled at nothing. He felt so foolish. Miss Joy had just been playing with him, stalling for time until her buddies showed up. Why, she was probably laughing at him right now, telling whoever was on the airship with her all about it. Just thinking about it made his neck burn with embarrassment.
And yet…
He gazed dreamily up at the clouds across the moon, the same bright moon that had overlooked him and Joy on the rooftop. There, beneath that same moon, under those very stars and wispy clouds, he had felt something. Something that he couldn't see or explain. Something about Miss Joy had struck a chord deep within him, and he knew that he would never be able to forget her.

Red hood feet dangled off the roof. It had been a good day. Most of the winter supplies were passed out, the new homeless shelters just finished construction and people started moving in today, they were much but enough to keep the cold out and get food to those that needed it.
Hood leaned back on the roof. He had some more hats and coats that should go to the colony in the west, too stubborn to move into a building, but luckily not stupid enough to refuse help.
Now to start on his night tasks, a new drug was making the rounds. It left the user unresponsive, seizure, vomiting, then organs start failing. In all one dose will kill you in 6 about hours. Not fun, and definitely not allowed on his streets.
New dealer had been making his way into hoods territory, sailing to Anyone who gave them cash they needed to know who was ok to sell to and who they lose a hand for. the rumor that-
A small body crawled onto is lap, shaggy black hair and big sapphire blue eyes stared at him. The boy had to be around 3 or 4. And is far too comfortable sitting so close to the edge of a 5 story apartment building.
Jason carefully put his arms around the kid. the last thing Jason needed was a kid falling off a roof.
"My name is Danny Fenton I was born on Christmas Day, I don't know who my datty is and Mummy's gone away. All I want for Christmas is for someone to take me home. Does anyone want a Christmas child of their own."
"I'm not Santa kid."
"I know Santa for the rich kids, and I'm an orphan. It's ok though cuz Ally kids have you, and that's even better!" Danny cuddled closer to Jason. The poor kid must have been out for a while he was freezing to the youth and definitely needed something to warm up.
"Then I'll do the best I can." Jason carefully worked his way back onto the roof before standing and placing the kid on his hip, some what glad his helmet hid his teary eyes. "While I work on your Christmas wish how about some hot chocolate. I'll walk you back to the orphanage."
The kids smile put Dicks to shame. Jason would definitely need to buy some sungl-
No Bad Jason no adopting black hair blue eyed children with tragic backstorys. You are not Bruce.
"I get a wish and hot chocolate! Best day ever! Thanky Mr hood."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was early on Christmas morning when Jason gave in. Its been two weeks since he dropped Danny off in a orphanage that looked more suited for rats then children. the kid had never been far from his mind.
He keep his word and had been looking for a home for Danny, but everyone who could take him Jason always found a problem with.
Yesterday when he went shopping he wondered into the toy Isle and left with more then the gallon of milk he went for. The gust room was now equipped with 5 new plushies a night light and a galaxy themed blanket.
Getting up Jason dialed the phone. It was far to early for anyone with normal hours to be awake., but he needed to do this now before he talked himself out of it.
"Hay Alfie, would you mind calling the guy for me-"
I decided to write this instead of sleeping sooo for give any grammar errors. Also merry Christmas Eve!
Wish Granted: The Startosphere 🌙🌠🌌
Since Star will be coming in chapter 3, I thought it'd be a good time to talk about Star's home, which is The Startosphere!
In this special space, its located in a cosmic space between the the mesosphere and thermosphere. In this space, millions of stars travel across the galaxy as nomads. They go around seeing different nebula formations, constellations and other wonders of the galaxy! All of the star people have cosmic power, but its never been used to the extent of actually changing their own form, let alone turning into animals or a human.
Tumblr media
They don't have solid forms, and since there's no gravity, the star people sort of glide across space. Their outer appearance look like human people, but they're outlined like constellations with a blue, white or yellow tint. (See this Helluva Boss GIF below as an example.) Like when a person draws an animation test for a character's movements.
Tumblr media
It can however, be a lonely life. Especially for our Star(boy). See, Star has a family. A big one in fact, but he hasn't seen them in years. And because stars are nomadic, its hard for him to make friends. He could be pals with one, but the next day he won't find them again. So he just wanders by himself, even though there are plenty stars around.
Many of the star people can see Earth from afar, but none of them have ever visited the planet itself. The stars just admire it from afar and go on about their business. Star however, was fascinated by Earth from the start and dreamed of going down there and meet the humans who all looked fun to him. He could spend hours watching them below, go away somewhere else, but always come back to Earth as if something there pulled him in like some kind of wind.
When stars reach 18 years of age, and they can pick their own names to go by. Sometimes they get them from the humans, and other times they create their own. Our Star hasn't chosen a name for himself yet, so Asha nicknames him "Star" to make things easier. Though after the adventure is over, he just might have an idea of what to call himself...
Tumblr media
Normally, stars can't grant wishes, that's a human belief. However, Star creates his own way to do it: Going right down to Earth and helping Asha however he can. Lastly, there are a few star nomads who heard rumors of a star with more power than any other in the galaxy. One so powerful, they could grant wishes to not only humans, but other stars. But none of them have actually seen this so called "Wishing Star".
Star nomads can hear humans, but only when they pay attention to Earth. Most of the time they're too busy looking for the next exciting thing, so Earth just doesn't hold their attention like it does for our Star. However, there is one human that ends up catching his attention the most, through beautiful singing...
In the Wishverse, Star is excited to meet other Starboys because not only have their been others who've been to Earth, but now he can make Star friends and he knows he can see them again, no matter how long it's been. Not only does he gain Earth friends, now he has star friends too. He couldn't be happier. 😁⭐ (Plus he loves to hang with Suñeo and Cielo the most, surprisingly)
Hope you enjoyed this little worldbuilding here. Like I said, this is my first fantasy story. I mostly write and watch media that are sci-fi, superhero, and action. I do like fantasy, but there usually has to be a twist on it to get me invested, and Wish's concept was one of them! So I took the sci-fi part I know and used it to create this system for the star nomads. More will be revealed as the story goes on, so I hope you continue to read Wish Granted as it unfolds!
Stay awesome! 😉
Masquerade
Combining two requests, both from Anonymous: Morpheus and s/o doing each other's makeup, Morpheus and reader kissing, reader teases him until he's at their mercy
A/N: The inherent eroticism of a masquerade *chef's kiss* partly inspired by All Yours by @roguelov (I love your writing so much!) Enjoy! Tagging @fangirlmary - If you want to be tagged in any of my writing let me know!
~~Requests are open!~~
Tumblr media
“Morpheus?” I called from my bathroom, “Are you almost ready for me?” I knew time passed differently in the Dreaming, I still couldn’t help worrying we were going to be late. The Faerie realm was hosting a huge masquerade ball in honor of Cluracan’s birthday, and as rulers of the Dreaming we had both been invited. I had never been to a faerie masquerade, so I was more than a little nervous- even newly immortal, I was still only human, about to be surrounded by beings with more power in their pinkies than I had in my entire body.
I heard Dream’s footsteps pad from our bedroom into the bathroom before I saw his reflection in the mirror. I applied the last touch to my lipstick before turning to get the full effect, and my heart stopped in my chest.
He was dressed in his usual black, but the material seemed to be deeper, darker, a void where even the brightest of stars diminished. Within that void there swirled sparkling lines of blues, greens, purples, and reds, dotted with large silvery sparkles I’d bet were diamonds sewn into the fabric. The shirt and pants seemed painted onto his form they fit him so well, moving with him, not even creasing when he walked or moved his arms. The shirt’s collar covered his neck, and his hands were wrapped in black silk gloves.
The cloak he wore when being Dream of the Endless, Ruler of the Dreaming and Nightmare Realms was attached to his shoulders with silver brooches, each cradling a sapphire the size of a walnut. A silver chain connected the two pieces, swaying gently when he moved. Flames still flickered at the bottom, but this cloak was made of the same living void as his shirt and pants. His hair was only slightly more tamed than usual, which only added to the affect. Black pointed boots with slight heels and soft soles were on his feet.
I needed to stop gaping, before a dream spider crawled into my mouth.
“Holy shit,” I gasped, taking it all in again and again, the words hardly doing my sentiments any justice. He was ancient and beautiful, distant and awe-inspiring. “You look incredible.” He smiled gently at me, and I could have sworn his chest puffed out just a little bit as he approached me.
“As do you, my star,” he replied in a murmur. His eyes roved up and down my body, taking it all in as one would a piece of art. I could feel the slight tremor in his hand as he brushed a stray piece of hair away from my face. “Although there are no words in any language to do justice to your beauty.”
I felt a blush rise to my cheeks and bashfully glanced at the floor. “Flatterer,” I teased, but did a little twirl anyway before going back to the mirror.
He was right though, I looked just as otherworldly as him in the clothes he fashioned me. If he was attending as a galaxy, then I was the star at the very center. The whole ensemble was silver-blue and shimmering, made of countless layers of a light, floaty material that swirled around me like mist when I moved. The gown had a sweetheart neckline, and sleeves of fine silver mesh covered my arms, making them appear longer and more graceful. Moonstones and diamonds dotted the dress and sleeves, catching the light and reflecting it back. Small diamond earrings went in my ears, and a strand of silver and moonstone was around my neck, with a large opal pendant hanging just below my collarbones.
I had a cape of my own, made of the same shimmering material and dotted with flecks of gold, flowing out behind me from my shoulders. My makeup had the same slight rainbow and silver shimmer, my eyes outlined in pale blue liner. I looked every inch a monarch.
“Just have to do your eyeliner,” I said as I gestured for Morpheus to sit on the stool in front of my vanity. He swept across the bathroom and sat on the stool as if it were a throne while I gathered my liquid and pencil eyeliners, along with a few shades of eyeshadow. “Close your eyes and hold still?”
Morpheus smiled and did as I asked. His lashes were long and dark and utterly gorgeous against his pale cheeks. He was holding still as he could for me, which was the equivalent of a marble statue. Leaning over him, I carefully lined his upper lash lines in black ink before buffing it out with a brush. “Open and look up?”
Tongue between my teeth as I concentrated, I did his lower lash line as well. The black liner made the blue of his eyes even more startling, and I just knew that his eyes would appear even more like bottomless pits if they shifted to their usual black and silver over the course of the night.
“Okay, look ahead?” Rather than look straight ahead, Dream decided to look up at me, stopping the breath in my lungs with his gaze. With slightly clumsy fingers, I put the eyeliner back in my makeup drawer and grabbed the two eye shadows I had picked for him: a slightly sparkling red, and a shimmering silver. Using my fingertip, I gently pressed some of the red into the outer corners of his eyes, and some of the silver into the inner corners.
If I thought he looked incredibly beautiful and powerful before, I was wrong. Just adding the eyeliner and colors around his eyes had made him arrestingly gorgeous, and I couldn’t look away. My eyes widened at the being before me, heat flooding my entire body. That hint of red and silver was the most beautiful mistake I had ever made. It added more than a hint of mischief to the blue of his eyes, gave the power of dreams the attitude of the devil.
Oh, I was going to have a very hard time keeping my hands off him for however long we stayed at this party.
~~
The fae had truly gone all out for Cluracan’s celebration in a dazzling display of magic, wealth, and the otherworldly beauty of nature. The giant ballroom hummed with life, my skin tingled from the strength of the collective vibes. Even as my eyes absorbed the vibrant colors and wondered at them until they burned, I felt distinctly out of place. Just a tiny human at the side of an Endless, almost like a pet. I wanted to shrink into a gilt corner and hope that none of these beings paid me any mind. But, I was a monarch of the Dreaming. If Morpheus couldn’t hide in a corner, neither could I.
I could tell from his slightly tense grip on my hand that he’d rather be anywhere else. Even with our masks covering the top halves of our faces, it was easy to see how much he detested being here. There were too many people, and wearing the face of a monarch for all of them was taxing. I gently rubbed circles into the back of his hand with my thumb as we waited in line to pay our respects to the king and queen, taking in the sights and sounds and smells.
A beautifully haunting waltz came from the musicians on the modest stage at the back of the room. Fae and gods and other creatures of myth mingled and danced, their movements flickering like mirages. A shiver went down my spine.
The fae herald announced us to the waiting monarchs, and Cluracan sitting beside them: “Dream of the Endless and Lady Y/N, monarchs of the Dreaming, rulers of the Nightmare Realms.” I plastered a smile on my face as we approached the thrones. Morpheus gave a slight, respectful bow, and I dipped my knees in a little curtsy.
“Lord Morpheus!” Cluracan yelled with a beaming grin, extending his hand for Dream to shake. “I am so pleased you were able to attend! Both you and your beautiful wife.” Morpheus shook his hand with a strained smile. “Thank you for the invitation, we are honored to be here.”
Cluracan then extended his hand to me. I did what was expected of me, and placed my fingers in his waiting grasp. “Your visage this night is a true blessing,” he murmured against the skin before brushing his lips over my knuckles with a flirtatious smirk. I could feel Morpheus tense beside me.
Dream exchanged the necessary pleasantries with the king and queen, something I was content to let him handle. After the fae monarchs wished us well with the encouragement to enjoy their hospitality for as long as we wished, we were finally free from royal obligations to enjoy the party.
Morpheus was a wallflower at social engagements on the best of days, but I could tell that being in a ballroom surrounded by fae and magical creatures of every kind made him especially uneasy. His hand never left my lower back as we mingled with the other guests, sipping on sweet wine to take the edge off.
After we took our leave of some forest spirits, the orchestra struck up a tune I recognized as old Dreaming folk music. I gave Morpheus’ hand a squeeze and whispered excitedly in his ear, “I’ll bet you anything Cluracan asked them to play this for us. It’d be rude not to dance.” I gave him my best sparkling puppy dog eyes. “Please? May I have this dance?”
Dream sighed, but agreed with a small, loving smile. The image of a perfectly refined and dignified ruler, he led me to the dance floor, holding my one hand aloft while the other rested at my waist. We swept around the dance floor in time with the music, our garments flowing out behind and around us- a supernova and a black hole, swirling around each other in perfect harmony.
“They’re all staring,” I breathed, my eyes darting quickly to the assembled crowd.
“They cannot help but be entranced by you, my darling,” he purred back, “And neither can I.” My eyes flickered up to his, my heart stopping in my chest and lips tugging up into a smirk when I caught the expression on his face. There was no way he hadn’t noticed the hitch in my breath, or the flush in my cheeks, and his tiny smile became unbearably smug. Oh, so that’s how he wanted to entertain himself tonight. Well then, two could play at that game.
“They’re staring at you too, you know,” I breathed against his lips just before he twirled me out and then back in to his waiting arms. “You’re easily the most powerful being here, I bet they’re trying to decide whether they want to be your ally, or stab you in the back. Not that I’d let them.” The hand that was resting on his shoulder slid up, up, so that I was caressing his neck. “And I bet the women are just burning inside, aroused by your demeanor and aggravated their husbands could never hope to measure up.”
It was soft, but I could hear the growl that rumbled low in Dream’s chest. I could feel the way his fingers tensed into the flesh at my waist. His eyes narrowed ever so slightly- he now knew I had caught on to his game, and was not only willing to play, but playing to win.
When the song was over, I pulled away to bow to him, low and slow and graceful with a smile that was anything but submissive. Dream returned the gesture, a perfect gentleman, one who knew exactly what effect he was having on his partner. Rather than take his hand to leave the dance floor, I turned away from him, throwing a flirtatious smirk over my shoulder as I walked towards the buffet. I could feel his eyes burning into my back as he watched, intending to follow, but stopped by a fae lord wishing to speak with him.
I could sense Dream’s growing tension as the night wore on and I refused to stay by his side, rather flitting just out of reach. I made small talk with the other guests, even exchanged a few more words with Cluracan- that really got him going. It was only a matter of time before he came to sweep me away. I intended to beat him to it.
It was hard to evade the stare of an Endless, but I managed well enough. Just enough to catch Dream’s eye before leaving the ballroom and disappearing around a corner into a quieter hall. I could hear his footsteps following me, letting him catch the occasional glimpse of my skirt fluttering around a corner. Almost there…
I turned the next corner and hid in the darkened space between two stone columns encircled with vines. My heart pounded as Dream drew closer. When he was about to pass my hiding place, I reached out and snatched his arm, pulling him into the shadows with me and pressing him against the wall. The air left his lungs on impact in a breathy moan. I stepped in closer, pressing my nose into the hollow just below his ear and taking a deep breath. I was already warm and fuzzy from the wine and fae magic in the air; breathing Morpheus in only made it more so.
With a soft hum, I gently pressed my lips to his, moving them slowly, carefully, testing just how far I could push him. I teasingly ran my tongue over the seam of his sweet lips, and he immediately parted them for me. I flitted in for the slightest taste, the sweetness of the wine still lingering in the corners of his mouth. I pulled away the moment he tried to deepen the kiss, letting him lick beggingly at my closed lips.
One hand cradled his chin while the other slipped under the edge of his mask, mussing his hair slightly as I lifted it over his head and let it fall to the floor. He gasped against my lips and his breath immediately hitched, like he had been caught in the act of showing just how much I was affecting him.
His hands found their way to my hips, fingers digging in to soft fabric as he tugged me closer. My fingers threaded into his silky hair, gently caressing for a few moments before tightening around the strands and giving a gentle yank to expose his neck. Another gasp left him, his eyes fluttering.
I attached my lips to his jawline, kissing and nipping, just hard enough to sting. His fingers bit into my hips, holding me closer. I chuckled low in his ear, more than a little proud of how little it had taken to tease him into a gasping, trembling mess. “I think we’ve stayed long enough,” I cooed, “Unless you’d rather have another dance, or talk with Cluracan some more…”
Dream’s eyes flashed open, no longer ice blue, but deep black, and somehow still burning and sparkling. I had been right before: the eyeliner and colors at the corners of his eyes made me want to sink into those bottomless pits that looked as though they wanted to devour me whole. A breath shuddered out of my lungs and heat flooded my body. Dream smirked, smug and feral.
A hand left my waist to rip off my mask and cast it aside. Dream’s eyes raked over my face, eyes burning with desire. “My little star…” his low growl rumbled through me like thunder. “You are making it incredibly difficult to keep my composure.”
I slowly licked my lips, smooth and sultry. Dream’s eyes tracked every movement of my tongue. I stepped in even closer: “Then let it go.”
When I felt the vortex of sand carry us back to the Dreaming, I knew I had won this round, and also that Dream was more than alright with losing.
Journal Entry #46: An old friend
I found myself sitting at the dining table in my boxers. I didn’t know why I was there. I didn’t even remember getting out of bed. And everything just felt a little...off. Slow. Like I was underwater.
The kettle was on. Someone was pouring tea. Fannie...?
I looked into the kitchen to see who it was—and my heart leapt into my throat.
No. No way. Nononononononononono—
“Would you like milk or honey in your tea?” he asked, like he owned the place. When I didn’t say anything—because I was in shock—he added both, and he looked like he knew exactly where to find everything in the kitchen. Again—as if he freaking lived here.
“I…I need clothes,” I uttered stupidly, but when I tried to stand, I couldn’t. Like...I couldn’t even get my butt off the seat. I could turn my head. Move my arms. I could kick, even. But any neural impulses I tried to issue with the command for my body to stand were blocked. I couldn’t even try. When I tried, it looked no different from me sitting still.
I began to panic, my breath going shallow, high up in my chest. I was trapped. I was stuck. My heart was racing. And then...I felt a hand on my shoulder, as he set the mug of tea in front of me, and the anxiety was sucked out of me immediately—through his fingers, it felt like.
And then...I felt…okay. Good, even.
I mustered up the nerve to look at him, and...he didn't seem quite as tall as I remembered. And I thought to myself…he wasn’t so scary at all. Yeah…I could take him.
He sat down adjacent to me and looked me over.
“You’ve grown up,” he said with approving satisfaction, like Uncle Luke would say. “I can tell you’re no longer the weak little boy.”
I didn’t say anything. But I did drink some tea.
It was unexpectedly good. I don’t usually put stuff in my tea.
“It would seem you’ve taken to physical training, as well,” he remarked with amusement. “The results are evident enough. Well done.” He took my arm by the wrist, and raised it to look at my torso. I let him do it. Whatever.
“Kinda wish I was wearing clothes,” I muttered into the mug. “So anyway…why are you here? Besides to check me out, of course.”
He chuckled. “You’ve become so much more insolent, as well.”
“I’ve always had a tendency for insolence," I returned warily. "Maybe you don’t know me as well as you thought.”
“No…you’re right, Solo. You always were impertinent,” he said mirthfully, as if it was some kind of inside joke between us. “But it was something I once stamped out of you, for a time." He sighed—the kind of sigh you give when you relive fond memories. "Ah, well... I no longer wish to be your master.”
Well...that wasn't what I'd expected to hear.
“...Why? Did you find someone else?” I asked, feeling kind of uneasy, the mug warming my hands.
“Oh, no," he said, in a tone that sounded like it was meant to be reassuring. "You’re the only one in the galaxy with as much potential for greatness as you have, and so it is such a shame you’ve chosen to lead a life of mediocrity. But, I respect your decisions, and I am content to let you go…which is more than could be said of your mother.”
I squinted at him, trying to scan for a sign of dishonesty. “Well...then why are you here?”
“Because I sensed you needed help,” he said, looking sympathetically at me. His eyes were so blue. Like pale sapphires. Like summer morning skies. “You’ve been very ill recently. And…lonely, is that not so?”
“I think I’d prefer solitude to your company, thanks,” I said, burying my nose in the mug of tea.
“Hm. How odd... I could have sworn I felt you call out to me,” he said curiously, fixing me with his blue, blue eyes, and resting his chin in one pale, gnarled hand.
My blood ran cold.
…So what if I had? I hadn’t thought he’d actually come.
“I…I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I lied. “I’m doing just fine.”
“No, no…you’ve been miserable,” he said, seeming to see into my soul. “You’ve felt so alone. Like nobody really loves you. Your own family doesn’t even know you’re sick. You have so few friends. What friends you do have are faceless holonet strangers. And the girl…you wonder if she’s forgotten you, now that she isn’t here.”
I blinked uncomfortably, tugging on the friendship bracelet tied around my wrist. “You…you know about Fannie?”
“Oh, I know," he nodded. "I remember her. The one you slapped across the face. Hopefully, she hasn't held that little incident against you." He gave me a toothy smile. "Yes...how interesting indeed, that your feelings toward her have shifted so strongly. I’ve seen those dreams you’ve been having, boy. I have to say...I didn’t know such passions lived inside of you.”
My face went hot. I knew exactly what he was talking about, but...it wasn't really something I had come to terms with, or felt ready to discuss. And I definitely didn’t want to be talking about it with him.
"I've been through some changes," I muttered. "Maybe a little later than most. Turns out it can kind of mess up your ability to be close with people, having someone invade your head."
"Oh, but weren't we close, you and I?" he asked, looking hurt.
"Too close," I said, glaring at him. "I almost died because of you."
"Now, now," he chided. "It's hardly fair to blame someone else for the fact that you were mentally weak enough to attempt suicide."
Well, kriff. He was really gonna say that to me?
"I'd like to attempt you-icide," I shot back with barely-restrained rage. "Bitch."
He chuckled. "Very clever. Though I don't think your girlfriend would have approved of the latter addition. Still, you do have quite a way with words, don't you? But I suppose that's how you were able to succeed at taking the next step in your career. Congratulations, by the way."
"Gee. Is there anything you don't know about me?"
"I know as much about you as anyone who truly cares about you would," he said. "And I probably know more about you than anyone else in your life does."
"Well, congrats, I guess. You want, like, a medal or something?"
"Oh, no, the chance to catch up with you after all these years is more than prize enough," he said coolly.
"Doesn't sound like you needed catching up," I said warily. "Sounds like you were pretty damn caught up before we even started talking."
He smiled, but didn't explain.
"All the same," he said warmly, "it is such a pleasure to be reunited with you once again, Ben Solo."
"Well, the feeling ain't mutual," I told him. "You do know I'm gonna tell my family you showed up here tonight. Don't you?"
"'Here'?" he repeated, looking surprised. "Where is 'here'?"
"Um, my freaking apartment?"
"Is it?"
"What kind of a question is that?" I snapped, but...then I looked out the window, and...saw...nothing. There was...nothing. It wasn't white. It wasn't black. It wasn't gray. It was nothing. I don't know how to describe it. There was nothing outside my window.
And then I looked at the wall chronometer to check the time. But I couldn't read it. It was like the numbers were blurred out. I couldn't see them no matter how I squinted.
And I still couldn't stand up.
He leaned in closer, placing a long finger underneath my chin. "I would advise you not to tell your family about our little meeting tonight," he said quietly.
"Oh, please. You're gonna have to try something better than that," I growled, jerking my head away. "I'm not scared of you."
"No, Ben, you don't understand," he said, in a way that sounded almost pleading, and the hairs on my back stood up, because I don't think he had ever called me by just my first name before. "I'm scared for you. Your family would react so unreasonably if they found out. You know what your mother is like. She would force you to move back home. She'd be paranoid, never letting you have a moment to yourself for fear of me. Think of all you have now: a brand new job. A budding romance. Your life as an adult, with your own credits and your own schedule and your own hobbies and pursuits. You are certainly no longer a child. Yet...she would treat you as one, if she knew. And no number of years would be able to convince her that you are an adult."
...He was right. I had to admit it. He was right.
"...Have...have you been planning this?" I asked, my voice weak.
"Oh, I'm not much of a planner," he said breezily. "I prefer to simply let things unfold and work around them. But it will be quite a challenge for you to work around your new circumstances...if your mother should become convinced you are in danger, and give you no choice but to move back home."
I shook my head in disbelief. Yes...he was right. Telling Mom was...just..not an option for me.
"And that's not even considering what might happen, if she grows too afraid of you to keep you around the house," he said with growing concern, as if the thought had suddenly crossed his mind. "Perhaps she might prefer to send you to your uncle's school to be brainwashed."
"Funny, you talking about brainwashing," I mumbled.
"Ben, please," he said. "I have only ever encouraged you to break away from the things you were raised to believe, and to think for yourself. Your decision was to reject my teachings. That is perfectly fine. But, if you ever trained under your uncle, and if you ever began to stray from his narrow idea of good and the light...he would turn against you in an instant. And so would your mother. And so would all of them." He paused. "Even the Twi'lek girl."
I had a brief vision of Fannie, looking like she had been torn up in battle, with tears streaming down her face. I'm sorry, Ben, but I have been called to banish darkness wherever it is found. I should never have loved you...and I don't think I believe that you ever really loved me. She ignited her saber and charged at me—and then the image vanished.
It was a haunting apparition. I couldn't speak.
"Speaking of her..." he said, a mischievous note in his voice, his thin lips curling. "Do you think you'll ever tell her about those naughty little dreams you've been having? How you whisper her name in your sleep?"
He was loving this. I knew it. Just trying to get in my head and mess me up.
"No," I said, annoyed that he'd brought up something so stupid just to humiliate me.
"And why not? Surely she deserves to know what sordid fantasies she stars in."
"Because they're just dreams," I snapped. "I don't know why I dream about that. But dreams aren't always something you can control, and they don't always mean anything. Just because you have a dream doesn't mean it has any bearing on the real world at all. Brains do funny things."
"Hm," he said with a small smile, stroking his chin. "I do agree completely."
And as he said that, the kitchen began to melt away, like rain ruining a sidewalk drawing, and I could feel blankets forming around me as I stared at him, confused, and then all at once everything came into focus and I was staring up at the ceiling, tangled in my bedsheets, the afternoon sun peering through my window blinds, my brow beaded up with sweat.
I grabbed the thermometer on my nightstand and took my temp.
My fever had finally broken. And, maybe, so had my mind—
But. Then again. Brains do funny things.
I stood up, feeling a little dizzy, and ventured into the kitchen. I could see the rest of the apartment complex out my window. The time was 4:03pm. The kettle was room-temperature, and the mugs were all in the cupboard, and the last sachet of peppermint tea was still in the box, unopened.
The Echoes of the Midnight Garden.
Chapter 1: The Offering of the midnight stars
Page 1.
In the quiet serenity of the midnight garden, nestled beneath a canopy of twinkling stars, Elara gently extended her hand towards her higher self, the guardian of the night and stars. With a serene grace, she offered a book adorned with rubies and sapphires, a tangible reflection of her quiet strength and unwavering resolve. "In darkness, I find my light," she whispered, her voice a soft melody blending with the rustle of leaves.
What lantern colour would you give to Jason + why?
Okay, let me start off by saying I’m really in no way qualified to form an opinion on this topic. My knowledge of the Lantern Corps is pretty much limited to that godawful movie with Ryan Reynolds, Hal Jordan in batfam fics, some JayKyle art on tumblr that I find really intriguing, and one really fun fic where Jason becomes a star sapphire (With Violet Light by Evilpixie). But, hey, I just spent 15 minutes researching the Corps on Wikipedia and bunch of fandom pages, so let’s do this thing.
Of the options, the three I considered the most seriously are:
Green. Jason’s got iron willpower in spades. Plus, Jason already has a thing for green, and just think about how much it would piss Bruce off.
Blue: I actually think Jason’s capacity for hope is what keeps him going. You don’t die twice and systematically lose or become estranged from everyone in your life you ever loved without being able to hope for a better tomorrow. Plus, blue is my favorite color. I dunno if Jason could handle needing a GL around to make his ring fully function, though. I kind of think he’d give it a month and then say fuck this, I’m going back to the guns.
White: I mean the resurrection tie-in is just so on the nose. Also, I really want to read the buddy-cop fic where Jay and Kyle travel the galaxy as White Lanterns.
Drum roll please …
I think I’m going to have to go with the classic and say Green.
Thanks so much for the ask, anon. This was fun. Now I want to hear from y’all - which Lantern would Jason be and why???
