So I was playing this Sega Naomi GD-Rom game called Melty Blood: Act Cadenza Version B (メルティブラッド アクト カデンツァ Ver.B) which is a fighting game developed by TYPE-MOON and Ecole Software and was published by Sega, it was released on Arcades in December 26, 2006 and version B2 was released on March 20, 2007. So I had this idea were Sparks from SuperKitties and Koppa from Shiren the Wanderer meeting Len and Kohaku from Melty Blood, mostly because I think it would be really cute seeing Sparks and Koppa meeting Len and Kohaku.

I have never in all my life had so many emotions about a tumblr poll but oh my GOD I'm so happy Garak won, lmao. That was so tense.
#remember in the early days when he was winning by a huge margin (as is proper)#and then the memesters and inexplicable union people and actual weird purist homophobes caught wind of it#and lost their gd minds#right up until the very end there were people like “BUT IT WOULD BE FUNNY” and ''BUT M*LES HAD THAT ONE UNION EPISODE''#dude garak is not something very many people on here feel comfortable joking about#for like a thousand reasons#I adore the m*les meme but that wasn't an appropriate place for one#and you want to support the strike? whole reason garak had ziyal the teenager thrown at him and was essentially replaced by m*les#(even when it made no narrative sense)#was because of evil producers and executives. you know. the people we're PICKETING AGAINST?#out here in the real world? not the fictional ferengi one?#and wtf was all that stuff about him being a working class hero? earning his money? he lives in a MONEYLESS UTOPIAN SOCIETY WHAT DO YOU MEA#HE COULD HAVE BEEN A CELLO PLAYER BUT HE JOINED STARFLEET CUZ HE WANTED TO FIGHT. HE WORKS FOR FUNSIES. HE'S A MILITARY MAN.#he's in starfleet even though it actively makes his family's lives worse. AND his own. i'm so confused what people meant by that.#m*les just likes to suffer okay it runs in his family#if you cared about the working class and unions you a) Would Support Garak and b) Would Have Voted Rom Into The Finals#do NOT act like this was about unions. one person said it was and the rest of you glommed on even tho it made no sense.#and had little to nothing to do w/ whether or not he's the best star trek character. it was just left field and weird and it hurt my brain#then there was the homophobia. the borderline racism. the weird morality arguments that idek how to respond to.#and that's coming from someone extremely self-righteous and annoying about it. garak's my guy#tldr i like m*les ok. ds9 convinced me of his worth. to be clear i do think he's a good character#but no one was voting for him for any reason but weird random shit?? or hateful shit??#and that was just exhausting. like i'm sorry but that hurt me#i'm just so glad it's over and justice prevailed#my goodness#where's my fainting couch#/rant

Here me out. Ted. Rom-com loving Ted. Not discovering until he's well into his forties that he's aromantic.
Not realizing that what he liked about those movies all these years was the promise of being loved and the possibility of closeness and the idea that one day everything was going to make sense.
Not realizing until long after the divorce ink dries that part of why he tried so hard to hold onto Michelle was that he knew deep down that something about the way he loved was different, but he never knew why or how, so he just kept trying to fix it and make it work.
Ted not realizing anything until he's about to leave Richmond, when he tries to have a parting conversation with Jamie and Jamie is the one who puts the idea into his mind. Because Jamie, who's been working on himself, has finally realized what he wants, and it's like a nuclear bomb has been dropped on Ted's whole world.
Ted panics. Ted goes through all the stages of grief. Ted cancels his flight back home - temporarily - because he is too afraid to look at his ex-wife with this knowledge rattling around in his head. Because despite the fact that it's got nothing to do with how much he loves his son, in some ways it feels like it has everything to do with how much he loves his son because it's about how Ted loves.
(And then while Ted remains in Richmond he ends up officially in three separate qpr with Beard, Rebecca, and Trent. It does not fix all his problems, and he still has to figure out how to be closer to Henry, but it helps and he is loved The End)
BOY WILL I EVER HEAR YOU OUT ON THIS ONE
you say aro character and im already criss cross applesauce on the floor listening intently and boy this is SO GREAT im completely in love with this concept. what a story you’ve painted here, what a trajectory of ‘I didn’t know that was possible and now im re-evaluating everything in my life and that i thought i understood about myself
im literally giggling with delight walking home from the bubble tea shop thinking about this oh my gd. your mind.
(also the Aro Epiphany Contagion is so real ahsjsbsj Jamie And The Accidental Ripple Effect He Has No Idea He Caused-)

Preview - Deluxe Jet Set Radio (aka De La Jet Set Radio) on Game Players DC Vol.2 (Video Game Magazine) (Hong Kong, 2000)
Translation in English:
Publisher/Manufacturer: SEGA
Game Type: ACT
Release Date: January 1st (2001)
Price:  5800 Yen
Capacity: GD-ROM
Memory: Undecided
Excellent grades, promoted to the international stage
For the first time in game history, JET SET RADIO combines 3D background and 2D animation to create a fantasy 3D world that is both real and imaginative. The game is still highly praised since it was launched, and the game production is extremely good. Unfortunately, the large capacity of JET SET RADIO is only exchanged for a few game stages. This time, the enhanced release increases the number of versions and modes, improves the game's durability, and also retains the original stage, making the game fresher and more playable.
Two new foreign stages have been added to the game. The new story takes place in the bustling foreign metropolises "BATAM STREET" and "GRIND CITY".
"BATAM STREET" is a smoky street with overhead trams, grocery stores connected to every household, dilapidated and towering old buildings, and parks where street children gather, etc. The structure of the city street is complex and very three-dimensional.
BATAM STREET Map
GRIND CITY Map
JET SET RADIO with the feeling of a new type of 3D game is back. The New Year’s Day in the Western calendar is dressed up to celebrate the early years with everyone. The shape has been carefully remodeled and re-dressed to surprise everyone again. The game has been greatly enhanced, the new stage has entered foreign countries, and you can meet like-minded "confidantes".
Puppies are crazy too! Let's JET SET RADIO!!
Simultaneously with the original story, while the Japanese police and JET SET RADIO members of the two factions of good and evil are intriguing, the United States is also experiencing horrific terrorist assassinations. JET SET RADIO continues the last episode of Japan's righteous men, and American fanatics also come to maintain justice, while expressing their own music style and smashing the evil organization "Golden Rhinos".
In the new stage, players can use the new character "Bozi (Pots)" to make trouble on the streets and graffiti everywhere. Bozi (Pots) was originally the pet dog of the character GG in the last episode, an ordinary puppy, but unfortunately he was transformed by the character NOISE TANK in the last episode, and became a part of JET SET RADIO by accident. Undisclosed role.
New character "Bozi (Pots)"
New Year's Gift Giveaway
Unfortunately DELUXE JET SET RADIO is another set of D-DIRECT exclusive game, interested readers may have to work hard to buy such an excellent game, but it is definitely worth the money. The game comes with a precious shirt worn by the character "GG", which is unique and only one of its kind. Work hard, everyone! If you want to be the first to see the game, you may want to go to SEGA's official web site to download the game's highlights, the web site is as follows:http://jet.dricas.ne.jp/dx_jet_image/mpg/de_la.mpg

Sega NAOMI update: DIMM board and IDE adapter arrived!
One of the major differences between NAOMI and consumer Dreamcast hardware is that loading your game is a more open-ended affair.
While the Dreamcast worked exclusively off a internal GD-ROM drive, NAOMI initially took ROM cartridges. This was more expensive, but cut down sharply on load times and crucially eliminated a major potential failure point: A very important decision for an arcade-centric design, which would be subject to much longer runtime and much more abuse than a mass market game console.
However, Game developers would occasionally want to make a game that was too big to feasibly fit on a expensive ROM board, and operators would occasionally want something more economical. This mandated an addition to make NAOMI accept the same GD-ROM media.
Enter the DIMM board and NAOMI GD-ROM system.
Tumblr media
As I alluded to earlier, optical media tends to be a major failure point. The more a disc drive gets worked, the more a motor, a sensor, the laser, or one of the other sensitive mechanical components is likely to fail. The less it does, the better in a environment where long runtime and minimal service are to be expected.
When SEGA’s engineers designed the DIMM board, the cartridge that interfaces NAOMI to a GD-ROM drive, they did something pretty clever. As the name implies, the DIMM board integrated standard DIMM RAM modules for use as a cache! Instead of directly accessing the disc whenever it needs data like a Dreamcast would, the NAOMI GD-ROM system copies all the data off the disc onto the RAM disk on startup. This sharply minimizes the amount of use the drive receives, as the system can just retrieve the data it requires off the DIMM board’s RAM disk.
Tumblr media
For reasons of further simplifying things, I’m doing something sneaky: Since the GD-ROM drive connects to the DIMM board over a relatively standard IDE connection, it’s possible to replace the GD-ROM drive with a CompactFlash memory card using a custom adapter board. This requires certain firmware version requirements to be met on both the DIMM board and the base console.
Another popular option is to use the later NetDIMM board, which has a network interface, to boot games off a network server. I wanted something lower maintenance, however.

this question might be out of your retro computer knowledge realm, but do you have a 5.25 DVD/blu-ray drive/external you recommend? I'm wanting to do more preservation/backup work and can't find a good rec for one
No, not really. Other than models that can do something special (like read DDCD or GD-ROMs), optical drives are pretty similar these days, and I don't have any specific models I can recommend.

i have fallen down the rabbit hole of game collecting and i own a good few systems now. i'm curious about getting a dreamcast but i've been putting it off because i kind of expect myself only to get the two Sonic Adventure games on it. (i have a Wii so i could always get their gamecube ports, even though sadx is quite bad)
do you think a dreamcast is worth the investment? i know i'm probably missing some obvious hits on the platform
I still think SA1 (obviously) and SA2 play best on the Dreamcast.
As for other Dreamcast games, hm. There are a handful of games that never really came to other platforms, including:
Cannon Spike, the home console port of Capcom's top down arcade shooter. You can play as Cammy and Mega Man. It's fun but not incredible (like all arcade games, there's about 20 minutes worth of content).
Chu Chu Rocket, which probably needs no introduction. It had a GBA port, which is also pretty good, but you can't beat the Dreamcast original.
If you ask me, Crazy Taxi also plays best on Dreamcast, unless you have access to an arcade machine with a wheel (though the Gamecube version is probably fine). And Crazy Taxi 2 has yet to see release on any other platform (unless you count Crazy Taxi 3 on Xbox, but that's a different beast).
Blue Stinger and Illbleed are sort of legendary games that never left Dreamcast. I think even fans of these two games would agree they're not very fun, but they are deeply interesting and very weird.
I think D2 was practically a launch title for the Dreamcast and one of the first multi-disc games. People talked about it a lot at release but don't anymore. I have no idea what it's like, outside of it being a horror game.
Floigan Bros. is absolutely miserable. Peter Moore said it was going to be Sega's "Super Mario Bros." I think. It's a point and click adventure game and was going to be episodic. Only one episode ever came out. But it's so bad it's worth owning.
Since I've already recommended games of questionable quality, I suppose it's worth pointing out that Sonic Shuffle has also never left the Dreamcast.
It came out on other platforms, but I think the Dreamcast version of Rayman 2 is considered to be the best one. Other versions have weird changes or missing features, whereas the Dreamcast version is apparently the best of all worlds.
I think the Dreamcast is also home to the only console ports of Sega Rally 2 and Zombie Revenge. The latter is basically a House of the Dead Beat'em'up.
Metropolis Street Racer is also a Dreamcast exclusive, and while older racing sims aren't usually sought-after, I had fun when I revisited this last year.
Super Magnetic Neo is also unique and probably worth looking in to.
As is Super Runabout: San Francisco. Had fun with that one last year, too.
Which is to say nothing about Soulcalibur.
The Dreamcast version of Skies of Arcadia seems to have better visuals on Dreamcast, but a worse difficulty curve and less content. Pick your poison.
Games that may also be worth looking in to that I am not super familiar with: Cosmic Smash, Fighting Vipers 2, Headhunter, Maken X, PenPen Tri-Icelon, POD Speed Zone, Psychic Force, Stunt GP, Toy Commander, Sword of the Berserk, Confidential Mission, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 1 & 2, Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future, Fur Fighters
Don't forget unreleased games: Half-Life, Propeller Arena, and a Dreamcast prototype of Toejam & Earl III.
Other Great Dreamcast Ports: Dynamite Cop, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Marvel vs. Capcom 1 & 2, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Capcom vs. SNK 1 & 2, Mark of the Wolves, Last Blade 2, Guilty Gear XX, Mr. Driller, Powerstone 1 & 2, Project Justice, any of Capcom's "For Matching Service" games, Dead or Alive 2, Ikaruga, and Bangai-O.
My only concern with collecting Dreamcast stuff is that the console has a tendency to burn itself out after enough time. The GD-ROM laser doesn't last forever (I know mine is on its last legs) and it is basically impossible to service. Most people seem to go the route of installing an SD card loader or something.

September 10, 2022:
Tonight’s game, I am playing the Japanese version of Power Stone, on my very yellowed 😂Sega Dreamcast (JP). Luckily, I got my hands on the Japanese Power Stone version for a very affordable price. Very unique 3D fighting game, during the time. The Japanese version can be played quite easily, with little or no Japanese language knowledge. I forgot how loud that GD-ROM can get 🤭. Thanks for stopping by 😁.

For the fic writers ask game: 4, 10, 11 and 53 :)
4. what is the plot bunny you’ve been carrying for the longest? optional bonus question: do you ever wonder why you haven’t written it yet and experience deep existential dread?
I know exactly why I haven't written it: there's no way not to write myself into a corner I can't get out of. It's essentially a very '90s high school rom-com where Kate dares Derek to date Stiles and Derek does and at times ~kind of forgets it's not the real deal and ends up taking Stiles' virginity. Then there's a time skip and Derek is still hung up on Stiles, now having realized how toxic his relationship with Kate was and how the kind of connection he had with Stiles isn't something you can just find anywhere, meanwhile Stiles hasn't been able to have a healthy relationship since Derek because he's lost his ability to trust people. Any time I try to get them back together though.... wellllll, I end up losing all respect for Stiles. I really like living in the middle of that plot, but when I try to close it out in a way that satisfies me? Cannot be done.
10. at what point in the process do you come up with titles, and how easy or hard is that for you?
see last ask!
11. what’s something neat you’ve learned while doing research for something you were writing? also, how much do you worry about doing research in general?
So that question in this that's like: do you make playlists to procrastinate on writing that I said no to? It's because that's what research holes are for. I love doing research so I worry a lot--A Lot--about at least having some reference for what the fuck I'm talking about. Sometimes fic leads to research - like in TMaH, I looked up a lot of creature lore from all over the world - and I still remember that Jorōgumo can be translated as 'whore spider' because that is gd amazing. And don't ask how because I genuinely do not remember but somehow I stumbled on General Santa Anna while writing Sevens and Eights and what Stiles says about him is true: he really did have a funeral, with full military honors, for his leg and I had to include that because: what a fucking guy, friends. And in [HDLR] so much Boston research was done, for real. But sometimes it's the other way around, like, finding out that you don't remember things but you remember you remembering and the more you do that, the more distant the original gets and how that fucked me up enough to write my first Sterek in three years with Odyssey of Memory, lol.
53. when writing, do you have an outline? and do you stick to it?
Less and less, no. I used to very loosely outline for long fics (and I would follow them when I had them because they weren't all that strict, just beats to hit) but then I got out of the habit of doing it at all because I used to just... find the endings as I got to them but now I've realized that I just get to the point where it stops coming and go: eh, I'll get back to that later and then I never do because I don't know how it ends. So, uh, the goal is to get back to doing outlines again this year. \o/
